Women’s Championship
#1 Brooklyn College – 0, #2 Staten Island 2 – Box Score
The 2016 CUNYAC/Brine Women’s Soccer Championship took place on Saturday, November 5th at Brooklyn College. The Dolphins would hold the vast majority of possession and momentum on their way to a 2-0 victory against the Bulldogs.
The following is courtesy of the CSI Sports Information Department
POST GAME INTERVIEW – GAME VIDEO – The College of Staten Island women’s soccer team won the City University of New York Championship for the second year in a row with a 2-0 win over Brooklyn College this afternoon in Brooklyn, NY. The win bumps the Dolphins up to 12-4-2 on the year and puts them in the NCAA DIII Tournament, also for the second straight year.
Kaitlin Russo was awarded the CUNYAC Finals MVP for her game winning goal in today’s game. Russo played 37 minutes and tallied two shots in the win. “I just saw the gap between the two defenders and I screamed to Lauren [Smith] to send it through and she did, and I just took the shot,” stated Russo, “it felt incredible.”
The Dolphins and Bulldogs opened the CUNYAC Finals on a beautiful Spring-like afternoon at Brooklyn College. Staten Island was anxious to get the first goal of the game and for that were called for an offsides just 30 seconds into the game. The Dolphins’ potent offense was on display this afternoon as the Bulldogs rarely saw the Dolphins’ side of the field. The constant pressure led to a free kick in the center of the pitch from 25-yards out which gave the Dolphins their first real opportunity of the afternoon. Krystina Rodriguez would step over the ball and lace one wide left for the games first opportunity on net. “I can’t do it without any of the other girls, we just gel together so well,” said Rodriguez about her team’s 2016 campaign.
CSI would keep the pressure on the Bulldogs’ back line and not allow them to have time and space to move and pass the ball with ease. Stephanie LaPointe had a phenomenal game at the center defensive mid position and nearly put the Dolphins up 1-0 15 minutes into the game, however her shot went just over the bar and out for a goal kick. Brooklyn continued to try and find a way to get onto the Dolphins’ side of the field but their attack got thwarted every time by the stout wall of the Dolphins led by Catherine Mulligan.
Russo would check into the game in the 22nd minute along with Krista Anson and their fresh legs really created issues for Brooklyn. Anson was able to keep star defender Jasmine Fermin occupied which opened up passing lanes for her teammates. Those distractions led to the first goal of the game when Lauren Smith was able to dribble from the right side of the 18-yard box to the left and slot a beautiful through ball to Russo who one timed a low shot near post.
As the first half began to come to a close the Brooklyn offense had a spark of life and was able to fire off two shots, one of which needed Nicole Mignone to make the save. That chance was the best opportunity for the Bulldogs all game.
At the half the Dolphins led 8-2 on shots, and were evenly split 1-1 on corner kicks.
The second half was much of the same with the Dolphins dominating the possession which started to frustrate the Bulldogs as they started to commit more fouls. Adrianna Parello is normally reserved to the back line of the Dolphins found herself with the ball from 25-yards out and launched a shot that bounced off the cross bar. The physical play by Brooklyn led to Leslie Gomez receiving a yellow card. That foul almost gave the Dolphins their second goal of the game as Rodriguez uncorked an absolute rocket towards goal from 40 yards out and hit the crossbar back into play.
Rodriguez would have another chance at glory when she received a through ball and found herself one on one with the keeper however she was unable to slot it past her for a goal. The Bulldogs would clear the ball but only as far as LaPointe who passed the ball to Natalia Sandor. Sandor would pick up her head and saw that Samantha Rodriguez was off of her line and send in a high shot that would go over her head and into the goal for the second goal of the game.
Staten Island kept the pressure up despite holding a 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Coach Giuseppe Pennetti was able to continue attacking because of how well his defense was playing. The continued attacking pressure nearly allowed Jennifer Cosenza to put in the third goal of the game however Rodriguez was there to make sure another goal didn’t go in the back of the net.
With just seconds remaining the Dolphins were given a corner kick and it was at that time they knew they had won their second straight CUNYAC title. With the final blow of the whistle the Dolphins stormed the field and tackled their field players in celebration.
The Dolphins now will wait to see who they play in the NCAA DIII Tournament during the selection show on Monday morning.

Sizing up the challenges in extracting lithium from geothermal brine — ScienceDaily
If you had a jar of marbles of many different colors but wanted only the green ones, how could you efficiently pick them out? What if it wasn’t marbles but a jar of glitter, and there was sand, glue, and mud mixed in? That begins to describe the complexity of the brine pumped out from beneath California’s Salton Sea as part of geothermal energy production.
For geothermal fields around the world, produced geothermal brine has been simply injected back underground, but now it’s become clear that the brines produced at the Salton Sea geothermal field contain an immense amount of lithium, a critical resource need for low-carbon transportation and energy storage. Demand for lithium is skyrocketing, as it is an essential ingredient in lithium-ion batteries. Currently there is very little lithium production in the U.S. and most lithium is imported; however, that may change in the near future.
Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have recently published a comprehensive review of past and current technologies for extracting minerals from geothermal brine. The review, published in the journal Energies, discusses and evaluates a broad array of technologies used for extraction of lithium from brines. The review finds that geothermal brines in the Salton Sea region of California are expected to be a major domestic source of lithium in the future but that significant technical challenges need to be overcome.
“One of the major drivers for developing domestic lithium resources now is that we will need a lot of lithium in the future.” said Will Stringfellow, lead author of the paper. “We are dependent on lithium that’s extracted from the earth in other countries — and it’s also processed overseas — so we don’t have any significant domestic battery production. But there are potentially a lot of lithium resources in the United States that could be exploited. So, we’re looking at whether those resources can be extracted and used in a really environmentally friendly manner, so that they’re truly ‘green’ lithium sources.”
Extraction of lithium from geothermal brines is expected to be particularly challenging. The brine is extremely hot when it comes out of the subsurface, and it contains a rich stew of many dissolved minerals in addition to lithium. “It comes out at over 100 degrees Celsius,” Stringfellow said. “So, you have to deal with the heat. And it’s very, very saline — about 25% by weight. There’s a lot of salt, meaning a lot of sodium, a lot of chloride. There’s also a lot of calcium and magnesium, and other things like iron and silicon. These are all materials that could potentially interfere with the extraction.”
The Department of Energy (DOE) is interested in both geothermal energy and the lithium supply chain, said Stringfellow, who is an expert on industrial waste treatment and management. “We were commissioned by DOE’s Geothermal Technologies Office to conduct an independent analysis of mineral extraction technology in the context of geothermal energy production,” he said. “There have been previous reviews of individual fundamental processes, but this is, to our knowledge, the first comprehensive review that looked at the more applied-science side of the process.”
Stringfellow and co-author Patrick Dobson, lead of Berkeley Lab’s geothermal systems program, looked at the published literature and industrial and government reports, and conducted a thorough review of lithium extraction technology patents. The most technologically advanced method of lithium extraction is adsorption of lithium using inorganic sorbents, but other promising technologies are also being developed. Inorganic molecular sieve ion-exchange sorbents are being applied for extraction of lithium from brines, and the past and current application of this technology are discussed in the paper.
Dobson and Stringfellow are members of the Lithium Resource Research and Innovation Center (LiRRIC), established at Berkeley Lab to develop science and technology for sustainable domestic lithium extraction, refining, and materials synthesis for applications such as batteries.
Recent projects have focused on how to determine the chemical composition of hot brine in real-time, without needing to cool it down, enabling better process control to maximize the efficiency of lithium extraction. They also are working on technoeconomic analysis with two companies operating at the Salton Sea — Berkshire Hathaway Energy and Controlled Thermal Resources — to see if lithium extraction technologies can be done in a way that makes it cost-competitive with other forms of lithium production. These efforts are supported by the California Energy Commission and DOE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office.
“Berkeley Lab pioneered lithium battery technologies and is continuing to push the forefront of lithium battery innovation by using natural resources and interacting equitably with the communities in which these resources reside,” said Mike Whittaker, director of LiRRIC.
The work was supported by the Department of Energy’s Geothermal Technologies Office.
Manitoba ceremony marks 32nd anniversary of Montreal Massacre, day of action against gender-based violence
Manitoba politicians and advocates gathered at the legislative building Monday morning to mark the 32nd anniversary of the École Polytechnique de Montréal massacre, when an armed gunmen killed 14 women.
On Dec. 6, 1989, a man fatally shot 13 students and an administrator and wounded others at the Montreal school, in one case declaring he was “fighting against feminism.” The anniversary later became the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson and several ministers were joined by community workers on Monday to honour victims and survivors of gender-based violence.
Stefanson said as the first woman to become premier of Manitoba she was humbled to receive the title a few weeks ago.
“But I am also reminded of the significant work that remains to ensure we have an inclusive society,” she said.
Elder Billie Schibler said the day serves as an important reminder of how much violence “continues to be perpetuated against our women, our two spirit and our trans sisters.”
Schibler shared her own experience as a survivor and witness to domestic abuse. Her aunts and mother suffered family violence. Schribler did too, beginning in her teenage years and continuing after she married at 19.
“I had a strong spirit and I knew I needed to make a better life,” said Schribler. “Perhaps it’s the story of one of you.”

Status of Women Minister Cathy Cox, MLA Janice Morley-Lecomte, Health Minister Audrey Gordon and Manitoba Families Minister Rochelle Squires took turns reciting the timeline of events of the Montreal shooting.
It started around 5 p.m. that day and ended about 20 minutes later when the man turned a gun on himself. Squires concluded by reading out the names of those killed:
- Geneviève Bergeron.
- Hélène Colgan.
- Nathalie Croteau.
- Barbara Daigneault.
- Anne-Marie Edward.
- Maryse Leclair.
- Maud Haviernick.
- Anne-Marie Lemay.
- Sonia Pelletier.
- Michèle Richard.
- Annie St-Arneault.
- Annie Turcotte.
- Maryse Laganière.
- Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.
Cox said the province acknowledges more needs to be done to end “all forms of gender-based violence.”
“We will work together to advocate for change, create dialogue and challenge notions and comments that perpetuate violence against women and our homes, workplaces and communities,” she said.
Information Radio – MB6:31Today is The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women
As vigils happen across the country to mark The National Day Of Remembrance And Action On Violence Against Women And Girls Gaëlle Fedida, Co- chair of Women’s Shelters Canada joins us to talk about a new program to protect women. 6:31
‘Violence against women became its own pandemic’
Two speakers focused on how gender-based violence impacts certain communities differently, including newcomers, Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ people.
The community organization Healthy Muslim Families saw an uptick in calls for support, said group founder Humaira Jaleel.
Jaleel acknowledged how widespread pandemic closures created barriers to supports and COVID-19 concerns constrained the kind of services that were on offer at shelters and elsewhere.
“As the pandemic hit, violence against women became its own pandemic,” said Jaleel.
Jaleel said there needs to be more culturally-relevant supports including shelters to help newcomers, immigrants and refugees, who many times are cut off from their home community and may not yet understand the legal, parental and other rights they have when contemplating reaching out for help.
She also called on community and religious leaders to do their part to educate and raise awareness.
Diane Redsky is executive director Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre. (CBC)
“We require that they do more to teach our communities that there is no place in any religion for domestic violence [and] hold violent men accountable for their actions,” said Jaleel.
“Ending violence against women will require even more leadership, more action and more investment and funding, and this leadership must come from our own communities in collaboration with government.”
Diane Redsky honoured the 14 Montreal women and acknowledged the recent 50-year anniversary of the murder of Helen Betty Osborne while calling for more community-led solutions to issues facing Indigenous women and girls.
“The solutions have always been wherever Indigenous people are, particularly wherever Indigenous women are,” said Redsky, executive director of Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre.
Humaira Jaleel is founder of Healthy Muslim Families. (Lyza Sale/CBC)
Redsky suggested colonization is responsible for higher levels of domestic violence facing missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQ people.
“The erasure of 2SLGBTQQIA and the destruction of their traditional roles has resulted in increased violence and loss of recognition and acknowledgement of their gifts as visionaries, ceremonial leaders, healers, caregivers, medicine people, peacemakers, warriors, leaders and social supports,” said Redsky.
“The space they held was vital to the good of our community and its loss over centuries of sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia has weakened our collective.”
Efforts to eliminate domestic violence should include dedicated government resources for 2SLGBTQ groups working on the issue, she said.
“Cultural supports must ensure the acknowledgement of 2SLGBTQQIA historical roles,” she said. “Working at restoring 2SLGBTQQIA to power in place will be medicine for all of us.”
Rally for Remembrance

On Monday evening, the Institute for International Women’s Rights Manitoba and organizers of Women’s March Winnipeg also held a rally to remember those who lost their lives to gender-based violence and to remember those killed in the Montréal massacre.
Micaela Crighton, co-chair of advocacy for the institute said more action is needed from politicians to eliminate violence against women. She wants to see leaders involve youth and those who are marginalized in decision-making.
“They’re the most knowledgeable in their own lives of how this violence is experienced and they are the ones who need to be the leaders,” Crighton said.
“Yet we see time and time again that … our leaders in different areas, industries and governments can talk a lot about making that change but don’t actually like open up the table,” she said.
Vivienne Ho, one of the founders of Women’s March Winnipeg, said the justice system needs to change to better serve women experiencing violence and survivors of sexual assault. Ho points to the high number of sexual assault cases that don’t make it to trial.
“It takes a whole community to talk to all the the people who are in charge, but this is not right. We have to do something about,” she said.

90,000 why it is dangerous – Rambler / female
Cucumber pickle has long been considered the best remedy for a severe hangover. Many people prefer to think that it helps with scurvy and is even able to cure periodontal disease. Brine, indeed, reduces the headache in the morning after heavy drinking of alcoholic beverages, but it should not be used to treat other diseases. This drink, so beloved by Russian people, is capable of causing serious harm to the body.
Too much salt
The first dangerous ingredient in cucumber brine is table salt.It is used as a natural preservative, thanks to which vegetables not only acquire a specific and so beloved by many salty taste, but also do not spoil for a long time. The percentage of salt in the cucumber marinade is extremely high. Drinking a glass of cucumber brine is tantamount to stunning the body with a shock dose of salted water.
Table salt provokes moisture retention in tissues and increases blood volume. As a result, the heart begins to work in an enhanced mode and “drive” an additional volume of fluid through the veins. For people with cardiovascular disease, this can be very disastrous and even provoke a crisis. If a person has already had heart attacks, it is better to add salt to the food to a minimum, and it is generally recommended to forget about brine.
Also, very poorly salted liquid affects the kidneys and the digestive system. Cucumber pickle is categorically contraindicated for patients with pancreatitis, kidney stones, cholecystitis, hepatitis. It only aggravates all these diseases. You should not get carried away with pickle and those who suffer from varicose veins.Due to water retention in the body, the legs will swell more, and the veins will increase in volume more.
Too much vinegar
When it comes to marinade for crispy cucumbers, vinegar should not be forgotten either. This nutritional supplement is very small in size and benefits a healthy body. But in large quantities, vinegar is extremely harmful. It too aggressively affects the mucous membrane of the esophagus, stomach and increases acidity. With prolonged abuse of cucumber pickle, a person can develop gastritis, peptic ulcer and even cirrhosis of the liver.
Another harmful property of cucumber pickle is associated with beauty. The fact is that high concentrations of salt and vinegar are dangerous for enamel. If you get too carried away with any pickle – cucumber, cabbage, etc. – problems with your teeth will inevitably begin. Darkening and remineralization of the enamel are guaranteed. So those who want to maintain a dazzling smile, a healthy stomach, heart and other organs should think about whether it is worth drinking brine at all.

Preparing canning for the winter, you thereby kill two birds with one stone – prepare an excellent appetizer for hot dishes and the basis for delicious culinary creations.
Pickle from tomatoes and cucumbers is always useful.
Previously, I somehow did not pay attention to it: we eat tomatoes, cucumbers, and the brine was usually poured out.But with age, and maybe with experience, since in our family the motto and life principle “Everything will fit in the farm, everything will be useful” has found application for brine. Well, it’s a pity to pour out such a yummy! Gradually I came up with where you can use it? It turns out that the use of brine can be used even for cosmetic purposes. But today I want to propose culinary dishes to the discussion.
Brine has long been famous in Russia for the most popular folk remedy for a hangover. Medicine partially recognizes this, because the saline solution is simply necessary to restore the water-salt balance. In addition, the brine is enriched with magnesium and potassium. The brine will also contain trace elements that were used for conservation. For cosmetic purposes, brine is used as a skin lotion, both in liquid form and in frozen cubes. It is used for bruises and abrasions.
It is an impermissible luxury to pour out such a product, if, of course, it has not become moldy. You can freeze cucumber pickle in the fridge freezer in the same way as we freeze water in the form of ice cubes, and then use it, defrosting the right amount if necessary, for example, massage your face with frozen cucumber pickle cubes. The brine helps to relieve intoxication in infectious diseases, stimulates the appetite.
On cucumber brine, you can cook pickle, prepare a variety of sauces, knead dough for pies, pancakes, dumplings. Okroshka is tasty and healthy if you add cucumber pickle to it.

Unused cucumber pickle can be stored frozen in an ice cube tray and used later.
A large number of cultivated plants do not grow well on acidic soil. For a good harvest, liming is carried out in such places. But some plants and vegetables can grow in mildly acidic soil and even produce good yields.
Cucumber pickle as a fertilizer for the garden is well suited for alkaline soils and with a moderate acid reaction. The use of brine is diverse, but not everyone uses it for irrigation, thinking that this will lead to salinity and death of plants.
The benefits of cucumber pickle for the garden
Cucumber pickle is used for the following purposes:
- Accelerates plant growth.
- Eliminates small pests (midges, wireworms).
- Fruiting is faster.
Remember:
In case of an overdose with saline solution, plants will slow down and may die!
Apples, raspberries, strawberries grow on soil with a moderate concentration of salt. On a land with a low salt content, gooseberries, honeysuckle and other berries grow well. To feed vegetables and other crops, you need to find out what is the structure of the soil so as not to harm the plants.
Saline solution helps to absorb nutrients from the soil. The effect will be noticeable on poor sandy soil.
Earlier in the 19th century in Berlin, gardeners used the method to improve the growth and quality of fruits and berries. They took the salt and scattered it around the tree trunks. The result was amazing!
Many people advise to carry out such a procedure in early spring, when the snow has not melted yet. Summer residents and gardeners tried this method on beets. The result was impressive: the beets became rich and sweet. To get a good harvest, take ready-made pickle from under the cucumber or cook it yourself. Add 40-50 grams of salt to a bucket of water.
This fertilizer is good for watering carrots, onions, potatoes, horseradish, pumpkin, zucchini.
Remember :
Fertilize with a salt solution in grooves 10 cm from the plants. You cannot pour under the root itself!
Cucumber pickle for pest control
Batun onion is a well-known plant to all gardeners. It grows well even without top dressing. After cutting, the leaves grow rapidly. Often this bow will damage the wireworm. To combat this pest, cucumber pickle is well suited.
Interesting :
Worms have nerve endings on their bodies, and they are very susceptible to various stimuli.
To get rid of the wireworm, take 300 grams of salt in a large bucket of water and work the soil at the rate of one bucket per 2 square meters. After two weeks, repeat the procedure, increasing the amount of salt. After you have watered the soil with the solution, pour a few buckets of water onto the garden bed.
Cucumber pickle
Cucumber pickle is widely believed to have a number of health benefits. But this product contains such an amount of salt that one would like to doubt its positive properties. Let’s find out once and for all, is brine healthy, and is it worth drinking this salty drink to maintain health, or is it needed only the morning after a party with alcohol?
“So Simple!” learned about an entertaining experiment, with the help of which it was possible to find out everything about the benefits of using cucumber pickle.
Cucumber pickle
Most runners and cyclists know this unpleasant feeling when they suddenly twist their muscles. It sounds incredible, but many professional athletes choose not fabulously expensive food additives as a means of to fight cramps , but the most ordinary brine.
When our heroine saw a jar of cucumber pickle in her husband’s sports bag, she was amazed. As the husband explained, a sip of the magic potion cuts the duration of muscle spasms by almost half! Not believing such arguments, the girl decided to conduct a simple experiment. And this is what came of it …
The brave young lady decided to consume only 1 glass of salty drink per day for a week. The action of the brine was lightning fast and really overwhelming. The girl who suffered from constant muscle spasms in the gym got rid of the problem in no time.
It’s simple: the cause of seizures is often dehydration , and 50-60 ml of cucumber pickle an hour before training are able to retain moisture in the body, thereby relieving seizures in the future. And most importantly, the required amount of “medicine” can be easily taken with you to training, jogging or on a long bike ride by filling a small plastic bottle with brine.
The benefits of brine for avid athletes are truly invaluable. But that’s not all! Brine is a valuable drink for the prevention of many ailments.
The benefits of brine
- Hangovers
This seems to be the most common use of cucumber pickle. This drink really effectively fights hangover. The fact is that one of the main reasons for a hangover is dehydration. Dehydration results in increased breathing, swelling and brutal thirst.Unfortunately, it will not be possible to make up for the lack of water in the body right away. Due to the low osmotic pressure, the kidneys will begin to get rid of the supposedly excess water, and you will simply want to use the toilet. Therefore, before drinking water, it is necessary to replenish the loss of electrolyte salts. This is where the pickle comes in.
Important! Before drinking the brine, you need to make sure that you are drinking the brine and not the marinade. And no more than 1 glass, because an excess of this drink will only increase the edema and the subsequent load on the cardiovascular system.
- For Athletes
It is believed that high sodium content in brine will help increase hydration and improve performance during exercise. Plus, drinking pickle brine after exercise can help replenish the loss of minerals and electrolytes from excessive sweating. - Against muscle cramps
Recent studies have shown that 1 ml of brine per kg of body weight can relieve muscle spasms within a minute. How this clever trick works is not yet fully understood. Some scientists suggest that taste buds send a signal to nerve endings, which, in turn, stop muscle spasms. Others think that it’s all about keeping the missing moisture in the body. Well, you can try! - Fighting hiccups
There is no scientific explanation for this, but brine is great for getting rid of hiccups, and in the shortest possible time.It is worth drinking a small glass of salty liquid, and you will get rid of annoying misfortune in no time. - Prevention of women’s pain
Cucumber pickle helps to get rid of menstrual pain and saturate the female body with useful minerals during PMS.
This non-standard use of cucumber pickle came as a real surprise to our editorial staff. So do not rush to get rid of the salty liquid after eating all the crunchy cucumbers. She will definitely come in handy!
