The quartz movement, while battery-powered, is generally more energy-efficient than mechanical movements. Additionally, the use of stainless steel for the case allows for potential recycling at the end of the watch’s life cycle.
How can watch owners contribute to sustainability. Consider these eco-friendly practices:
- Properly maintain the watch to extend its lifespan
- Choose timeless designs like the Epoch to avoid frequent replacements due to changing trends
- Recycle watch batteries responsibly
- Consider having the watch repaired rather than replaced when possible
By choosing a well-made, versatile watch like the Epoch, consumers can make a small but meaningful contribution to reducing fashion’s environmental impact.
The Future of Timekeeping: Where the Epoch Watch Fits In
As we look to the future of personal timekeeping, the role of traditional watches like the Epoch remains significant. While smartwatches have gained popularity for their technological features, many consumers still appreciate the elegance and simplicity of a classic analog watch.
The Epoch women’s watch represents a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and modern style. Its quartz movement provides the accuracy expected in the digital age, while its analog display offers a visual appeal and ease of use that many find preferable to digital interfaces.
Will traditional watches like the Epoch remain relevant in the coming years. The outlook is positive for several reasons:
- Growing appreciation for classic, well-made accessories
- Desire for “unplugged” accessories that don’t require charging or updates
- Continued value placed on watches as fashion statements and status symbols
- Preference for simpler, focused devices in an increasingly connected world
The Epoch watch, with its blend of timeless design and reliable functionality, is well-positioned to remain a beloved accessory for years to come, even as technology continues to advance.

Watches designed by women for women
In 1976, Jacqueline Dimier designed the women’s version of the Royal Oak, which became as sensational and revolutionary as the original model.
For Audemars Piguet, the launch of the Women’s Royal Oak was the first major step towards creating a broad and diverse line for women, including some great creative collaborations.
Creating a completely new item is not a random process. It is influenced by the cultural, political, economic and social changes of the current era. Model 8638, the women’s version of the Royal Oak, was released in 19’76, four years after the original male model. In the 1970s, the situation in the world was quite unstable. These years marked the end of a period of sustained growth that began after World War II, known as the Glorious Thirty Years (Trente Glorieuses), and was marked by two global oil crises. At this time, the watch industry was experiencing its own crisis associated with the advent of quartz technology. Only a few of the most dedicated manufacturers continued to believe in the potential of mechanical watches, including Audemars Piguet. These years also saw the rise of liberation movements.
The first women’s watch, Royal Oak, created by female designer Jacqueline Dimier, appeared precisely in this time full of contrasts – a period of crises and the desire for freedom. At that time, Jacqueline Dimier was the head of product design at Audemars Piguet, one of the first designers to take this traditionally male position (which she held from 1975 to 1999).
Jacqueline Dimier was one of the first female Heads of Product Design at Audemars Piguet, having held the position since 1975 to 1999.
Before joining Audemars Piguet, the Genevan-based designer worked with many well-known companies. Her first task was to create a new interpretation for the Royal Oak men’s watch, which has already reached an unprecedented level of popularity. Jacqueline Dimier had to transform them into women’s watches. “It wasn’t easy,” the designer recalls. — The watch appeared only four years ago and was a real embodiment of masculinity. It was a challenge for me to accept the task of adapting one of Gerald Genta’s legendary creations. My approach was to keep the individuality of this watch and focus on proportions. I wanted to keep it large, which went against the trend for women’s watches. ” The designer managed to bring out the feminine side of Gerald Genta’s original model, which featured a hand-finished steel case and bracelet, reminiscent of the facets of a diamond.
Jacqueline Dimier reduced the case diameter to 29 mm, but retained the eight prominent screws on the octagonal steel bezel, which were originally conceived as an allusion to the diving helmet and have undoubtedly become two of the most distinctive attributes of the Royal Oak watch.
It was a daunting task for me to accept the task of adapting one of Gerald Genta’s legendary creations. My approach was to keep the individuality of this watch and focus on proportions. I wanted to keep it large, which went against the current trends for women’s watches.
In the 1970s, women’s watches were made of noble materials such as gold or platinum, so making the first Royal Oak women’s watch in steel was a bold violation of design canons. Another unusual feature of the model was the 875 gold rotor. Jacqueline Dimier has left her own mark on the dial design by placing the ‘AP’ monogram in white gold at the 12 o’clock position. Contrary to established tradition, the watch was presented not at the Basel fair, but at the Fred jewelry boutique in Paris. The success of the Royal Oak women’s model exceeded all expectations – so much so that the workshops could hardly meet the demand. At 19In 77, the brand released a model in yellow gold and a model in a combination of two metals.
However, the history of the relationship between Audemars Piguet and women dates back to 1875, when the Manufacture was just founded. From the earliest years of the company’s existence, its watches for women were decorated with precious stones, pearls or enamel and were intended to be worn as pendants, rings or brooches. All women’s watches designed by Audemars Piguet were exceptionally small. Each model of the Manufacture set new records in the field of creativity and miniaturization. One of the first women’s watches created by Audemars Piguet was a brooch featuring a minute repeater movement in an elegant 22. 6 mm case. This watch was sold in 1897 year.
Turning to the 20th century, it should be noted that the 1920s were the heyday of the decorative arts, so in the geometric forms of several female models, Art Deco features are well traced. Trying to escape the painful memories of the First World War, people sought an outlet in growth and the adoption of modern trends, which was very accurately reflected in the sophisticated and creative design of Audemars Piguet women’s watches. In the history of wristwatches, this period was truly a turning point, and women’s models had a key influence on their distribution and improvement.
Since then, the brand has never stopped paying attention to women, creating models for them that reflect the spirit of each decade.

This elliptical ladies’ watch with garnet dial and woven gold bracelet, equipped with caliber 2430, was released in 1970 year.
This 2017 Millenary model, with mid-case and gold lugs set with diamonds and polished bracelet, was created especially for women.

For example, the women’s watches produced in the Millenary collection from 2015 to 2020 were enclosed in an elliptical case with a multifaceted dial that reveals part of the escapement. It was a neat way to acknowledge a fact that is often overlooked : many women love beautiful mechanics too. To offer an alternative, as well as a tribute to its female customers and the art of setting, Audemars Piguet launched the Haute Joaillerie collection in 2013. For the 40th anniversary of the women’s Royal Oak in 2016, the Manufacture, in collaboration with jewelry designer Carolina Bucci, decided to reinterpret this watch. This is how the Royal Oak Frosted Gold model was born, the case and bracelet of which are made of forged gold, sparkling with iridescence and creating the effect of diamond dust.
However, the culmination of this love story between Audemars Piguet and women is perhaps the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet collection. Serving both masculine and feminine needs, this gender-neutral timepiece is housed in a case that combines round and octagonal shapes, reflecting the Manufacture’s creative path since its inception.
For the 40th anniversary of the women’s Royal Oak in 2016, Audemars Piguet, in collaboration with Florence-based jewelery designer Caroline Bucci, has reinterpreted this watch.

Women’s watches are highly valued at the auction.
Part 2
Women’s watches are highly valued at the auction. Part 2
While most of the collections for sale on May 24 were more decorative – but the auction still focused on women’s models – Thomas says the auction house has seen more complex movements in these pieces over the past five years. “More and more timepieces with impeccable designs and movements designed for women are actually a sign that women have a great sense of taste, just like men,” she says. This new direction opens the door for different brands, more precisely for their development and the diversity of products provided. This may make them stand out, but not on par with established favorites such as Patek, Piaget, Cartier and Audemars. Also on sale on May 24 were watches from Richard Mille, four pieces from Chopard, de Grisogono, Roger Dubuis and a pair of Zenith watches. Thomas also mentions a set of Graff tourbillons with “mega diamonds” that went up for sale at a recent auction in Geneva. “We are moving away from the familiar quartz that was used as the basis for women’s watches,” says Thomas. She also emphasized the importance of vintage models for men and women. Since the majority of men’s watches made in 19The 60s and 70s are 32mm and 35mm, they are already quite “small” for men by today’s standards, but women just love to wear such models. Thomas wondered how a person would behave if he saw a Daytona in the window, or, well, another unique model of the 1960s. For him to say? It is possible that the Daytona can by no means be a women’s watch model! He would say the Daytona is only a men’s watch. But, even such a well-known brand as Cartier Santos has provided several variations of women’s watches.
Women’s watches from the same era are also in high demand. “Women’s watches are becoming increasingly popular at auction for two main reasons: value and style,” says John Reardon, international head of watchmaking at Christie’s. “Vintage women’s watches represent one of the best offerings in today’s watch industry.
