This pocket demonstrates how to string 6 diamond mesh. 6 diamond is a great alternative to standard mesh, and is the most commonly used “monster mesh” in lacrosse. However, I would recommend this more towards a defenseman or a box lacrosse player, which is what I use 6 diamond for. What this does is bunches the mesh up but it won’t make the pocket too baggy. This step is crucial, some people do regular singles or double ups, not covered in this tutorial, but I believe they make the pocket far too baggy and undefined.

What Else You Need to String a Lacrosse Stick
As much as we’d love for mesh to just stick inside of a head by itself with the perfect pocket, we do not live in Neverland. Building upon your new mesh, the following is what you will need to make it operational within your stick head:
- Top and bottom strings
- Sidewall strings
- Shooting strings
Even though we list these elements separately, you may be able to use the same type of string across the board. Nylon sidewall string has become a catchall for stringers—it can be used on the top and bottom as well as the sides, and also be used as a nylon shooting string.
Ninjalax puts out a sidewall stringing spool that is worth the investment if you’re planning on upgrading your mesh.
I would also suggest purchasing a spool even if you initially string from a kit. The reasoning behind this is sidewall strings tend to be the first point of breakage for a pocket so having extra nylon on hand is a great fail-safe. Not to mention, you can also use the extra string to close up holes in goal nets.
When it comes to shooting strings, Ninjalax also has value packs of laces as well. Like the sidewall string, having extra laces on hand is a very smart investment as aside from breakage they can deteriorate with use. It’s best to keep those laces fresh especially if you play in inclement weather often.

Types of Lacrosse Mesh
Mesh was long-held as a pretty standard, unchangeable element of the game. Companies like ECD and StringKing, however, have begun to challenge that notion to advance mesh in areas like durability, weight, and, more recently, feel beyond just the contributions of hardness.
Ultimately, mesh and your pocket can be the Golden Gun you wield on the field or the Achilles’ heel to your performance. It all comes down to personal preference and this is generated through trial and error—do not fear experimenting with your pocket.
Even so, there are positions on the field that value certain types of mesh specifically. Notably, FOGOs should be looking at soft mesh options for their sticks as they are better suited for the rigors of face-offs.
Let’s get into breaking down your options when it comes to mesh.
Hardness
This is the first element that is usually listed and the top thing to consider. Mesh is mainly split into either hard or soft categories as the default. But companies like ECD and StringKing helped usher in wider use of semi-soft and semi-hard mesh that share the values at each end of the spectrum without leaning too hard into their deficiencies.
We’re gonna give you a brief break down of each level of hardness:
- Hard. The main positive is the consistency of shape and hold—the ball should always be relatively centered in your pocket and your pocket shape should remain consistent regardless of external elements. But, the rub is hard mesh tends to be more difficult to string and provides less feel for the ball not to mention the break-in time needed is much greater than other options.
- Soft. Out of the gate, soft mesh should be game ready after an easy string job in relation to a harder option as it does not have the same rigid coating as hard mesh. Although soft mesh provides a better feel for the ball, it does have a tendency to lose its shape faster and requires constant maintenance to keep your pocket up to snuff.
- Semi-hard. This shares much of the elements of the harder end of the spectrum but is a bit easier to break-in and provides a slightly better feel for the ball. This is a great mesh to consider for long poles, especially those at LSM, and more defensive-minded middies.
- Semi-soft.Also more closely resembles a soft option but is bit more resistant to changes in shape and boasts advanced durability in inclement weather. Semi-soft is a great option for more attack-minded midfielders.
Diamond Count
To put it simply, this is the number of diamonds stretched horizontally across your pocket. The rule of thumb here is the fewer diamonds, the better hold, BUT the more diamonds, the cleaner the shot/pass.
- 10-diamond is the standard for mesh currently. Most pre-strung heads default to this and it’s the most widely available mesh on the market. The big reason behind this seems to be the accuracy of passing and shooting provided. Success on the field tends to be predicated upon quick ball movement and the 10-diamond is built for that.
- 8-diamond mesh most closely resembles the Vortex (although the Vortex is a base 10-diamond with a 9-diamond “SweetSpot”). It is a hybrid of traditional 10-diamond and larger 6-diamond construction. This should give you a pocket with better hold but a relatively clean escape when it comes to shooting/passing.
- 7-diamond or “mid-monster” mesh is the first primarily hold-oriented mesh that was relatively familiar to Brine products previously. It is a decent mesh for those transition middies that find themselves dodging from box to box.
- 6-diamond comes next of course and is the most popular of the big diamond meshes. It is harder to break-in but provides a really nice hold once you manage to do so. You get a lot more whip with the 6-diamond and these pockets tend to be much less customizable, especially for shooters.
- 5-diamond…yup, 5-diamond emphasizes hold over release making this an interesting possibility for an experimental LSM – one that finds themselves having to carry the ball from end to end more often than not.
- 4-diamond mesh cause why not…this is much less widely used and mostly appears as a core pocket element for those crazies out there that want to channel the original laxers with the use of leather strings.
Coating/Finish
Mesh has always had some sort of coating or finishing, often wax in nature, to help reduce friction in the pocket, promote shape, and prevent moisture damage to the weave.
Designer brands like ECD and StringKing employ advanced coating substances to their mesh that promotes feel and grip while still prioritizing those elements listed above.
Weave/Thickness
Now we’re really into the most basic level of mesh tech but we cannot understate the importance of the weave. Both ECD and StringKing promote their specific form of mesh weave as it was an area that was seen as advancing the weight (lightening) and feel/responsiveness of the pocket.
Hand-in-hand with the weave, the thickness of the mesh is also something to keep an eye on. Thinner mesh weaves can promote elasticity and control of the ball placement within their pocket.
Lacrosse Goalie Mesh: The Ultimate Guide to 12D Mesh
One of the most requested posts I get these days is for an in-depth review of different lacrosse goalie mesh.
Problem is, in all honesty, I’m no expert on goalie mesh. I could probably write the “The Incomplete and Often Erroneous Guide to Lacrosse Goalie Mesh” but I couldn’t write the “The Ultimate Guide to the Lacrosse Goalie Mesh”. I always stuck with what works for me and have never really explored everything available to us goalies in terms of mesh options.
But luckily for those interested in a full breakdown of the different lacrosse goalie meshes, we have an amazing guest post from a former D3 and MCLA lax goalie and a current lax coach, ref, and goalie trainer.
Enter Mesh Expert: Connor
Hey guys, its Connor for LaxGoalieRat, and today I’ll be reviewing four of the most popular 12 diamond goalie meshes on the market today.
For this review, we’ll compare the 12 diamond sized meshes since it is seemingly the most popular size used today, and we can compare apples to apples this way.
Two of the lacrosse goalie meshes are wax-treated by East Coast Dyes, one is Throne of String’s wax mesh, and the fourth is the cult-classic Jimalax hard mesh. I’ll start with the latter, since it has been the most popular for the longest time.
Whether you’re new to lacrosse stringing or have been the team’s stick doctor for years, it’s important to know that all hard mesh is NOT created equal.
Go pick up a factory strung goalie stick off the wall at your local sporting goods store, restring it with the same mesh, and you’ll notice that it may still throw inconsistently and maintain a poor pocket like an originally factory strung head does.
The most experienced stringers could even tell you what brand a piece of hard mesh is by the way it stretches, breaks in, and maintains its shape (no lie, it’s a great party trick). The meshes myself and other experienced stringers stay away from are ones you find in a major-brand string kit you can pick up at every sports store.
With that being said, the earliest company to really set the bar with how hard mesh SHOULD be made, is Jimalax.
They’ve been doing it since 2000, and were one of the first websites where one could buy a spool of hand-dyed hockey lace and the best mesh (at the time) in the business.
Their original hard mesh hasn’t changed much since then because, well, it hasn’t needed to.
Jimalax’s hard mesh breaks in easier, is more durable, more consistent, and lower maintenance than most of its hard mesh competitors, and for a fraction of the price.
It’s beloved by lacrosse players old and new, and remained of the top-selling meshes despite all of different types that are now on the market, such as wax mesh.
The Rise of Wax Mesh
In the last five or so years, wax mesh rose from something nobody talked about, to one of the most popular meshes to cradle a lacrosse ball in college or the MLL.
Using hard or soft mesh as a base, lacrosse gurus started to treat a new piece of mesh with a waxy, water resistant coating in order to get mesh that could perform better in the rain.
Right around this time came the beginning of East Coast Dyes, whose wax mesh is some of the best in the business, along with Throne of String.
So, enough of a history lesson. You came here to learn which mesh is the best one, right?
The answer to that is really easy: it depends on your individual preferences as each mesh type has its own advantages and downfalls. Let’s explore.
Jimalax Hard Mesh
Why do people choose Jimalax hard mesh over arguably more popular and newer meshes? For many lacrosse players, it’s because they’ve always used hard mesh, they’ve learned to pass and catch with it, and it’s what they’re used to. Why change meshes and fix something that isn’t broken?
Hard mesh is durable, easy to string, and maintains the shape of its pocket and channel better than soft or wax mesh, the latter being incredibly important for goalies.
When strung properly, you’ll never end up with a “bowl” at the bottom of your mesh, which is when the ball rolls around all over place when you try and cradle. And that wonderful channel you can get with hard mesh helps with every pass, toe drag, or fake.
Wax Mesh
Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? But for some goalies, this isn’t enough, and they venture out and string up their stick with that wax mesh all the attackmen on their team are always talking about.
These goalies quickly realize that their new wax-treated mesh definitely has some advantage over the OG Jimalax hard, the most important perhaps being the water-resistance the wax treatment provides.
Pour some water on a piece of hard or soft mesh, and you’ll notice the mesh expand slightly, and probably throw with a whole lot more whip than it did the day before. With wax mesh, however, you can see the water bead up, and roll right off the mesh (especially while new).
Most importantly, it throws nearly the same as it did when it was dry.
This is an absolute game changer, especially for goalies who play in the rain or snow. No more throwing right into the mud once the skies open up in the middle of a game.
Differences Between the Wax Meshes
To make choosing a mesh even more challenging, both East Coast Dyes (ECD) and Throne hold their own specific advantage over one another.
First off, ECD offers a semi-hard and a semi-soft version of their 12D diamond mesh, while Throne’s wax mesh falls somewhere in-between a semi-hard and semi-soft.
After testing out all three wax meshes, I was very impressed with each one.
ECD and Throne both provided great water-resistance for the first couple months, and then gradually started losing its coating after it saw a lot of abuse (Note: I mean HEAVY abuse, yours could last at least twice as long).
How they Compare to Hard Mesh
I loved not having to adjust my throwing patterns whatsoever on clears in the rain and snow. Goalies have enough to worry about when it comes to making saves in the mud, and wax mesh made clearing in adverse weather an absolute breeze (get it?).
Also good to note, is the wax coating is pretty resistant to dirt, which is awesome news for the goalies who want fresh white mesh that blends right in with the net behind ‘em.
Additionally, all three of the wax meshes broke in almost instantly. ECD semi hard and Throne took roughly a practice or two until they were done breaking in, while the ECD semi-soft was broken in before I was finished stringing it up my nemesis.
Another huge advantage of changing to wax mesh is the increased rebound control from the softer mesh.
I concluded that it is the softness of the mesh that causes the rebound control since I felt ECD semi-soft controlled rebounds the most, then Throne, then ECD semi-hard.
However all three were definitely an improvement over hard mesh’s almost “trampoline” like properties.
This is such an important quality, because nothing is more frustrating than making a point-blank off hip save on the crease, only to give up a rebound that is scooped and scored. We’ve all been there, and can take any goalie out of their mental game.
Rebound control is where the three wax meshes most differ from each other.
As is life, wax mesh is not perfect, and hard mesh can outshine it in a few areas, especially in ease of stringing. String up hard mesh the way you like it, and you will barely have to adjust it at all over its entire life.
Hard mesh is incredibly consistent, resilient, and low-maintenance. While it usually take about a week or so of practice and hours of wall-ball to break it in, Jimalax mesh is not going to change much over time.
As a keeper, consistency is absolutely key; whether talking about saves or outlet passes.
With this mesh, a 40 yard pass will feel just the same as the 40 yard pass you made 3 months ago. In other words, the pocket keeps its shape really well, and allows consistent “feel” about where the ball will release when thrown, or where in the pocket it will be while cradling.
With the wax meshes, I basically had to adjust the backwall, sidewalls, or shooters every week to keep it throwing with the amount of whip I like. I did it weekly because I’m a bit obsessive, it probably was only necessary every 2 or 3 weeks.
This is an annoyance for sure, but it’s not necessarily a deal breaker for most.
However, if you don’t know how to string your own stick and you pay someone to do it, this could most definitely be a deal breaker.
I could not recommend these wax meshes if you don’t know how to fix your stick once the mesh starts changing. I found that the softer the mesh, the quicker the stick would require maintenance.
So the ECD soft was definitely the most high-maintenance of the three, despite how superior the rebound control was.
A question I always hear is “which mesh has the best hold?” After my extended experience with all of them, I found the ECDs to slightly edge the Throne mesh, which was a little grippier than the Jimalax hard.
However, keep in mind the hold advantage is minimal compared to the advantage of a correctly strung stick. Making sure your stick is strung by someone who is experienced is definitely paramount to what mesh you’re using.
A few smaller things; currently Jimalax sells their mesh for just around $16, while Throne and ECD charge about two times that price for their wax mesh.
Also, I found ECD mesh to leave a waxy residue on your finger after stringing, while Throne did not. I thought this would mean the ECD mesh coating came off while stringing, but they all stayed water and dirt resistant about the same length of time. Maybe throne cleans off the extra wax during their treatment process.
Additionally note that Throne mesh comes with a full season, 4 month warranty for their meshes. With that said, I’ve had nothing but exceptional customer service from all 3 companies over the years. So I believe if you received defective mesh, all three companies would back their product up and replace it for you.
For what it’s worth, I’ve tried almost every goalie mesh out there on market, and I continue to go back to Jimalax hard mesh every time as the all-around best. I personally use it and string indifferent goalies’ heads with it.
To combat the “trampoline effect” and giving up lots of rebounds, I will usually treat it with 1, 2, or 3 coats of conditioner to soften it up to the goalie’s preference.
I also recommend to the same goalie that they string their backup with hard mesh and less whip and use it as a “wet stick” for when it rains. I’ll string it while the mesh is wet, and wet it before each time I practice with it. Then make sure that, while soaked, the wet stick throws just like the dry primary stick. This way, when it rains, you have a backup stick you know you can rely on to throw just like your regular stick.

Final Verdict on Lacrosse Goalie Mesh
Noting all of the differences between these meshes, what do I recommend? For the most part, you can’t go wrong with any of these.
I think if you’re just starting out or don’t know how to adjust a stick properly, stay away from the softer wax meshes. You may be able to get away with the ECD semi-hard without much adjustment, but I think Jimalax is a better fit for this type of goalie. For more experienced keepers, I say give one of the wax meshes a shot.
You may love it, you may hate it, but at least give them a chance.

The Russians defeated the Germans – 6: 1.
After a splendid comeback with the United States and an offensive defeat with Finland, the Russian national team at the group stage of the YUCHM ended up with real rivals. The German junior, who first rose to the elite division at the U-18 level, had to be respected, but hockey in Germany has not yet stepped forward so much that the Bundestim could consistently have such a monster as Tim Stützle and boys like Lucas Reichel or Jon-Jason Peterka.Therefore, from today’s Germans, in the two starting matches at the tournament in Dallas, not hopelessly losing to the Americans and the Czechs, no one expected any special problems.
Although in the first period of the defeat of Steffen’s team, Zische did not bode well. The Russians did not play head and shoulders stronger than the debutants of the elite division and in the starting twenty minutes, thanks to the efforts of the restless bundle of Svechkov – Yurov, they were able to hit the gate of Nikita Kvappa only once.

But the contender for the first draft pick in 2023 did not even think to stop on the double. In the second period, our guys drove the Germans in moments, and at the equator of the match they got a five-minute majority, donated by Ryan Bettahar, and scored the fourth goal. And the 16-year-old golden boy from Perm simply could not draw his hat-trick in a simple way. After a small fire under the gates of the Germans, the puck bounced to Michkov and he hit the target, sticking the stick between his legs.Well, after all, beauty is!
Do you know what is the funniest thing? Already in the first five minutes of the third period, the Russians scored the fifth goal and initially the judges recorded it on Matvey, but a little later it was given to Ilya Kvochko from Magnitogorsk. The striker of “Magnitka”, who played the first match in the tournament today, drew a good counterattack with his partners and gave Michkov to the far post with an uncomfortable one, but it looks like the puck crawled behind the ribbon with a ricochet from the defender of the German national team.
However, our junior did not manage to play to zero – the Germans did not let Sergei Ivanov go dry.But shortly before the final siren, they let the 17th number go to rest with poker, missing the sixth. There hasn’t been such a freaky junior in Russia since the time of Alexander Ovechkin.
“Battle for Alberta” is good old hockey
The National Hockey League is not just great teams and star hockey players, but also fierce rivals. This word cannot be translated as “derby”, because the clubs are not always from the same city. But often they are based on the same territory. With rare exceptions: for example, “Detroit” and “Colorado” were cut in the 90s in a real ryvalry.Although where is Denver, and where is Michigan, you yourself know. Just look at the map.
“Battle of Ontario” is “Ottawa” and “Toronto”, from the same Canadian province. Alex Garfield and esports in North America.Cybersport
Five fighters with weapons at the ready make their way through an abandoned railway station. They are alert, in line of battle, and their faces are covered with black ski masks, making their already formidable arsenal (and appearance) all the more formidable. A sudden explosion of a smoke grenade obscures vision. Dry barking of shots – and one of the militants collapses to the ground; his head turned into a bloody mess.
The rest rush for cover. One of them, with a large-caliber sniper rifle, lags behind the group, aiming the enemy in an optical sight.An obscure figure flickers through the scope. One shot – one corpse ( one-shot in gaming jargon. – Approx. Per. ). His comrades-in-arms rush forward, seizing part of the territory from a raid. Four of their enemies in green camouflage perish one after the other, until the last one remains, either hiding in some hole, or creeping along the distant ridges.
The militants rush forward again – and finally get to the coveted secret warehouse with ammunition somewhere in the depths of the station.They plant a makeshift bomb, the detonator timer counts down the last seconds until the explosion … three, two, one …
“The terrorists have won.”
Digital fighters are not very similar to the five young people who “called” themselves a victory. They are wearing T-shirts with computer logos and jeans. They scream with delight and “high-five” each other. There is one round – there are still fifteen left.
This is not Afghanistan or Iraq. This is a map called de_train and the game is Counter-Strike (CS).
Counter-Strike is a first-person shooter or FPS, a computer game in which the player sees what is happening through the eyes of a soldier (an indispensable detail of the landscape, consisting mainly of buildings and ruins, is the player’s weapon barrel protruding into space). To win, as a rule, you need to kill your opponents. Shooters are a lifelike nerve-racking, thrill-filled game where digital death is accompanied by blood splatters that stain the screen. The genre took its first steps back in the 1970s, but the real breakthrough came in the 1990s when Doom came out, causing fierce controversy in society due to its flirtation with satanic themes and association with the perpetrators of the Columbine high school massacre.
Counter-Strike was originally the work of fans – two college students Meena “Gooseman” Le and Jess Cliff – who made a modification ( mod in gaming jargon) to the popular Half-Life game developed by Valve Corp. based in Bellevue, Washington. While studying programming at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, Le became interested in game design. Based on Tom Clancy’s war novels, the Rainbow Six series has inspired the realistic Counter-Strike theme.Instead of fighting mutant monsters or demons, Counter-Strike confronts player-controlled terrorists and anti-terrorist units.
Unlike early shooters, where players single-handedly confronted computer monsters led by artificial intelligence, sports Counter-Strike is played in teams – five on five. Le wanted interaction, coordination and communication rather than reflexes in the game so that even less skilled players could contribute to the overall victory.Kills (kills of enemy playable characters. – Approx. Per. ) and victories in rounds bring the team play money that can be spent on improving weapons and equipment, as well as shared with teammates as part of a common strategy. But Counter-Strike was not meant to be a full-fledged competitive discipline.
“We weren’t talking about any esports,” Le recalls, “I did it so that I could play with any stranger and enjoy everything that happened.”
Le took over all the programming and artwork, simulating digital copies of weapons after visits to the range and looking at online photographs of real weapons. Today, he admits that he simply dragged the sounds of shooting from other games and slightly edited them to make them more explicit, since it was too difficult to record the sounds of real shots. Cliff worked with the gaming community – players offered their versions of the cards that the creators built into the game.The game gained popularity due to word of mouth alone, without any advertising – the players simply shared their impressions with each other. Eventually Valve hired Le and Cliff and released Counter-Strike as a commercial product in 1999.
“We weren’t sure that we simply wouldn’t be pushed aside,” Min Le said. By then, he had barely finished college. Valve added a few more programmers, a dozen artists, but the company’s horizontal organizational structure allowed Le to retain overall creative control of the project.“I grew up great while doing this,” he said.
In the most popular – and competitive – plot of the Counter-Strike game, Mine / Defuse, a team of terrorists tries to plant a bomb in a certain place on the map, and a team of fighters from an anti-terrorist unit (gamers say – KaTe, “counter-terrorists” or “contra” and, accordingly, “tera.” – Approx. per. ) tries to prevent this from happening. The idea arose after a series of real-life car bombing incidents in the Middle East that coincided with the development of the game, Le recalled.
If the bomb goes off, the terrorists win. Counter-terrorists must either defuse the bomb or prevent it from detonating for a round that lasts one minute and forty-five seconds. Another way to win is to completely kill the opposing team. The first team to win sixteen rounds out of thirty wins the game.
Counter-Strike has clear objectives and a scoring system that makes it a dynamic, highly competitive competition. And, unlike other shooters, where game characters are reborn and can return to the game after “death”, in Counter-Strike “killed” are eliminated from the game until the end of the round, leaving the team in the minority.The “learning curve” of the game is quite steep, which means that the skill required to play the game is gained quickly, but the skill level of veterans is significantly different from what beginners can demonstrate. The game provides a simulation of weapon recoil, which adds realism to the process: the recoil force differs depending on the type of weapon, which can potentially knock down the player’s sight. Players need to be able to hit targets using the W, A, S, and D keys of the keyboard to move. Aiming and shooting is carried out with the help of the mouse.
Among other players who appreciated the new shooter was Alex Garfield, who grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. He signed up for Nintendo Power and got his own personal computer around 2000. Two years later, he discovered Counter-Strike.
Garfield initially played Counter-Strike with a friend, dragging his computer over to him to connect to a local LAN (local area network.- Approx. per. ) – all players were sitting in the same room, and their computers were physically connected to each other to play together. Local network games (LAN tournaments) are considered the “cleanest” type of eSports competition, since all players are gathered in one place, and there are practically no lags – interruptions and delays in connections (possible with a remote connection). So everyone is on an equal footing. For casual gamers who play from time to time (casual gamers in industry jargon.- Approx. per. ), these LAN contests create an atmosphere of social intimacy and trust that is sometimes lacking in online games.
In his first game, Garfield did not kill a single enemy, but he did thirteen times. “It all pissed me off madly – the bullets just refused to fly where I was aiming, and they just smeared me,” he recalls. “I started playing from home and got hooked on this business with all the guts.”
The Games provided Alex, who lacked the physique required for feats on the lacrosse or basketball court (although he was an avid supporter of Philadelphia sports teams), the right competitive space.“It really was what I needed,” he says. Having mastered the basics, he began to study tactics, coordination and communication.
Games allowed Garfield to get out of the suburbs and meet rival players across the country. California was famous for its gaming leagues, and Texas was another major center for video games. Garfield became friends with gamers from other cities and began writing notes on the Counter-Strike site GotFrag, which analyzed all aspects of the game with the meticulousness of a daily newspaper.
His parents treated the new hobby of their child calmly – exactly as long as he remained a diligent student and fulfilled other family responsibilities.
The Garfield family did not have any outstanding ancestors, but achieved a certain wealth thanks to education and science. Alex’s father, Eugene Garfield, was born in 1925 in the Bronx into a family of Lithuanian Jews and immigrants from Italy. From early childhood, Eugene had a taste for work.
“I grew up working. At nine, I worked as a bellboy in a grocery store, and then toiled for hours in the laundry for an extra quarter.Later I worked for my uncles delivering orders from Uncle Lou’s liquor store. During vacations and after school, I worked in the tailor quarter, ”Eugene told Chemical Intelligencer in October 1999.
Having received his education, Eugene took up science seriously. He developed and implemented the impact factor – an average numerical indicator of the citation rate of an academic journal over a given period of time (over two years) – which is today used as the main ranking of the importance of scientific research and the impact of academic publications.The impact factor has become something like the main arbiter in the scientific world, a measure of scientific consistency. Along the way, he enriched Eugene Garfield. After a while, he sold the company he founded, the Institute for Scientific Information, to the Thomson Reuters corporation. But money was never Eugene’s main goal.
“People are too often afraid of failure. They are afraid they will be financially insolvent. Money never drove me – it came to me. But if I started thinking about money, worrying about it, then I could never achieve financial success, ”he reflected.
Alex’s mother, Catherine, was one of eleven children. She grew up on a farm in Philadelphia, in a family with intertwined Polish and German roots. Catherine joined Eugene’s company, where she met him.
When Alex was applying for college, his mother advised him to mention his computer game hobby on his resume. He panicked and resisted. “She thought I needed to write about it in my college essay, and I’m not like that! You are completely crazy, mother! Nobody will take it seriously! ” – recalled Alex.
Alex was on the waiting list of several Ivy League colleges (the most prestigious educational institutions in the US – Approx. ) and chose Pomona College near Los Angeles, preferring it over the East Coast liberal arts colleges. “The atmosphere is more relaxed there,” he says. In 2013, an essay on Alex Garfield’s gaming career was published in Pomona Alumni Magazine.
Barely arriving at college, Garfield recalls, he clashed in a Counter-Strike match with eight of his classmates and killed them all.Then he left games to focus on his studies and on an affair with a new girlfriend. Garfil intended to become an aerospace designer because he had a penchant for mathematics. “I never liked writing essays, I liked solving test problems more,” he recalls. But part of him still wanted something different.
Alex Garfield did not want to follow in the academic footsteps of his family, and he was not attracted by the standard road to success. His dad might very well have given him a job, but Alex didn’t want a handout.“I wanted to do something of my own, only my own – and in my own way,” he said.
In Alex’s first semester, in January 2004, four students stole an eleven-foot iron cross erected for an arts class at neighboring Claremont College and set it on fire. The event sparked a heated debate over whether it was a racially motivated crime or an example of freedom of expression. Students were temporarily suspended from classes (or they could be expelled).
“The passion did not subside throughout the semester,” Garfield recalled.This event influenced his choice of subjects: Alex decided to specialize in sociology, taking antiquity and African American studies as auxiliary disciplines. He will deal with his career later. Studying was more important now.
At the end of 2004, after going home for the Christmas holidays, Alex realized that he missed games. “I was attracted not so much by the spectacle as by the rivalry. I think it was the competitiveness that kept me interested in games more than anything else, ”he said.Alex tried his hand at a small and little-known team playing Counter-Strike, but lost his nerve and lost control of the game. After giving up for a while from active gaming, he began writing notes for the site Evil Geniuses (EG, “Evil Geniuses”) KS-team from Western Canada, founded in Western Canada in 1999.
Any ambitious gaming team strives to become the same as any professional team in traditional sports, but at the dawn of esports, the competition system was very loose, matches were held irregularly; there was nothing like seasons that culminate in a championship, the way they do in the NFL or the NBA.Some competitions were held sporadically, haphazardly, in different parts of the country. Gamers were more like tennis players or golfers, playing in disparate one-off tournaments, each offering its own prize pool.
The first notable American video game competition was the Professional Esports League (CPL), created in 1997 by Angel Munez. A native of Puerto Rico, Muñez was a stockbroker and investment banker. In Dallas, the capital of Texas, he set up an investment technology company called New World Investments, Inc.Five years later, he sold it to a UK investor. Having decided to distract a little from the pressing problems of the financial market, he began to play video games – and was seriously carried away by them.
By a happy coincidence, Dallas was not only the capital of Texas, but also the capital of shooters and a haven for fans of this genre – it was the headquarters of Id Software, the game development company that created such classics as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. Id Software organized a convention called Quakecon – there was an opportunity to compete in skill with other gamers, but in general it was more like gatherings-parties for fans of its games.
Munez, however, saw the financial potential and launched the CPL; he attracted funding from computer industry giants such as Logitech, Intel, and Nvidia. The league grew to become the premier esports competition in North America; CPL hosted tournaments in various shooter disciplines, the main among which was Counter-Strike. The prize pool has grown to several million dollars over the decade.
The early years were pretty meager, but applicants flocked to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas from all over North America and Europe, dragging giant system blocks with them to compete for prize money of several thousand dollars.Many of them found themselves at a loss – the winnings did not cover the costs of travel and accommodation, but sports excitement collected them again and again, several times a year. Sitting on creaky chairs at rickety tables, gamers fought selflessly, and fans and the defeated, who had been eliminated from the game, hung over them, trying from over their shoulders to see how they shoot and “strafe” (in gaming jargon, they move sideways, not letting go from sight of the target. – Approx. per. ).
Some upstarts have tried to replicate the CPL model, but more often than not they lacked the knowledge and experience to organize successful competitions.In January 2004, Cyber X Games were held – the name “borrowed” from the X Games community, which was engaged in extreme sports like skateboard or motocross, despite the absence of any formal connections between gamers and extreme sportsmen. The tournament was collected in Las Vegas, and the prize pool was $ 600,000 at the time. Players had barely played a few matches when tournament organizer Joe Hill canceled it. Since then, the title sponsor of the competition, AMD, has not invested in esports events for two years.
There was absolutely not enough money. Event organizers scraped together modest amounts from broadcast and ticket sales. The players took the prize money home. The teams were more like agents – they dealt with logistics, transported players from tournament to tournament and connected them with the main source of money – sponsors. The managers sought to leverage the successful tournaments and growing fan base to raise funds from sponsoring companies. Potential sponsors were usually asked to place their logos on team jerseys and to have team members participate in promo videos.Sometimes sponsors provided the team with equipment for free – and gamers either used it after the competition or sold it.
The manager of the Evil Geniuses team was named Mohammad Ocean, or “a dilda named Mo” as Alex says. The team managed to sign two sponsors – computer companies Abit and ATI Technologies; their total annual contribution was $ 36,000 – a large sum for a young team. The sponsorship money provided regular travel to CPL tournaments and other major events such as the World Cyber Games, or WCG.The championship was sponsored and hosted by the South Korean company Samsung Electvonics and was considered something of a video game Olympiad. Teams were organized and announced on a national basis, the first, second and third places received, respectively, gold, silver and bronze medals.
In the fall of 2004, EG represented Canada at the WCG Finals in San Francisco. Garfield was struck by the first signs of the breakup of the team. He had to take care of the plane ticket himself, and it became increasingly difficult to contact Ocean.He had some personal problems. In addition, as the team members said, some kind of disagreement with the sponsors began.
“Evil Geniuses” were knocked out of the tournament at an early stage, after which Mohammad dropped them and disappeared somewhere. The team was on the verge of collapse, the players were looking for other partners and were ready to try their luck with them. But Alex Garfield wanted to keep Evil Geniuses – and not only as a business project.
“We were friends,” Alex says. “They were special just because they were, not because they were first, second, or third.”
He volunteered to find sponsors. The players laughed, but agreed to give him a chance. To begin with, he tried to rebuild his badly damaged relationship with ATI and Abit, the team’s previous sponsors. But they were pretty angry at EG, and even Ocean stopped answering their calls. One of the employees of the former sponsors demanded that Garfield return the money that Ocean allegedly owed the company. It was a dead end, and Alex started calling other firms with potential connections to the gaming industry.He believes that his main asset was persistence on the verge of obsession. “The first few contracts I got solely due to the fact that I was hanging on the phone and did not give people a damn, peace,” he recalls. “For them, I was still someone completely unknown and got them until they threw me at least some piece to get rid of me.”
So he managed to get a few hundred dollars for the team, and the friends decided to stick together for now. One of the first on the “Evil Geniuses” was supplied by the Danish company SteelSeries, a manufacturer of gaming mice and keyboards.The company started investing in esports in 2001 and has remained a sponsor of EG ever since. “There is rarely where the latest technology is so beautifully combined with creativity, art and imagination,” said Etisham Rabbani, CEO of SteelSeries. “I think this combination is what makes gaming and gaming so great.”
Garfield was able to persuade Newegg, an online computer store that does not sell in Evil Genius’s native Canada, to act as a temporary sponsor for the team. He highlighted the Evil Geniuses’ charisma and the growth of their American fan base.The team, in a disciplined manner, did not forget to thank the sponsors at every performance and in every interview. The geniuses received roughly $ 500 from Zboard, a gaming keyboard company later acquired by SteelSeries; the nationality of the team made it possible to get the Canadian division of Intel as sponsors.
“I focused on what I thought was our unique trait,” Alex recalls. – I think my marketing moves worked because I truly believed in what I was offering [to the sponsors.- Approx. per. ] “.
His youth may have been a hindrance at first, but Garfield proved to be a very effective marketer and salesperson. He spoke softly but persuasively, was gracious but persistent, and his Beatles hairstyle and slender physique made him attractive. He didn’t draw attention to himself by his appearance, but he exuded enthusiasm, and his PowerPoint presentations were truly impressive. “I was completely sincere. I was an exemplary representative of my culture, – said Alex.”I think some part of me has always wanted this responsibility, and I have always fulfilled my obligations.”
But even the promised money sometimes came with a fight. Garfield had a row with the cashiers at Wells Fargo Bank, one of the branches of which was located near his college, when he could not cash the checks received due to the fact that the confirmation of the transfer of money did not keep up with the needs of the team. Sometimes he had to use his student debit card to book plane tickets for the whole team to fly to the next tournament many days before it started.He could hardly refrain from crying. He even had to borrow three thousand dollars from his mother to pay for the plane tickets; the father also gave him money. In the end, he paid off with his parents.
Most of the “Evil Geniuses” were students and divided their free hours from school between part-time jobs and playing CS. Getting together was not easy, and this limited the time of joint training, so most often the team worked out the coordination remotely, online, which reduced the effectiveness of training.
Robert “blackpanter” Tyndale joined Evil Geniuses in 2003. He recalls that the lack of practice provoked seemingly small mistakes in the game. But, accumulating, these flaws did not allow the team to win big tournaments. Team spirit also played a very important role. Having lagged far behind the opponents in points during the game or having lost the gained advantage, the players began to blame each other and stopped paying attention to the advice of their teammates. The team needed a game leader, an authoritative captain, able to maintain morale and establish strategic management of the team during the game, effectively distribute the roles most suitable for them among the players.“You need to clearly understand who is capable of what in the team, what is the skill level of each player, who is predisposed to what,” says Tyndale, who has served as such a captain for part of his playing career.
The first breakthrough for the “Evil Geniuses” was the 2005 summer tournament in the CPL series. The Canadians managed to beat the undisputed favorite – one of the strongest European teams, the Swedish division of SK Gaming – in the semifinals in overtime and reached the final. Like many other eSports tournaments, this one was carried out according to the formula “elimination after two defeats ( double elimination parts of it.- Approx. per. ) “. So SK Gaming, having rolled out the challenger from the bottom of the table, triumphantly reached the final, wanting, of course, to get revenge.
In the final duel, the very “flaws” of Evil Geniuses that Tyndale spoke about surfaced. “They literally devoured us,” he recalls. SK Gaming, the most experienced cyber fighters, the most successful team in CPL history, winning seven championships, coping with pressure much better than geniuses, and losing in the semifinals did not make them lose confidence.SK Gaming won confidently, and the Canadians remained second, surpassing all expectations, but never becoming champions. On the one hand, it was still a very important achievement for Alex Garfield – when he was a teenager, he got hold of a mouse pad decorated with a stylized SK Gaming logo, on the other – it was still a cruel disappointment, since his team could not win.
The
Evil Geniuses established themselves as ambitious contenders for the highest spots, but they were still not among the top teams in North America.A 2004 documentary dedicated to him was called About Average. The team did not manage to win a victory, which would have become the main, decisive breakthrough for it. “It was all terribly annoying and sad. But the team was still a bunch of great people, ”says Alex. He has supported teams from Philadelphia all his life, so he is used to supporting dark horses (Philadelphia has not been able to boast of major victories in any of the most popular sports in North America for a long time.- Approx. per. ).
Sometimes the team’s play was spoiled by absolutely ridiculous incidents. In 2005, during the heyday of Evil Geniuses, at a tournament in South Korea, Tyndale accidentally threw a flash grenade into a box on the map de_nuke, initiating a known game error (bug), as a result of which the entire enemy team was blinded. The rules of the tournament required a replay, if the course of the game was violated due to an unintentional mistake, everything had to be started anew, and as a result, the “geniuses” were eliminated from the tournament.
Friendship kept the team and allowed them to overcome troubles together, but the same friendship did not allow individual players to achieve more by moving to other, stronger teams. Evil Geniuses’ best player was Matt “bl00dsh0t (Bloodshot)” Stevenson, nicknamed the “sword” for his amazing tricks he sometimes did. He went out alone, armed only with a knife, against four with firearms and managed to kill them all. At one of the tournaments, Tyndale recalls, he shot through the wall offhand, blindly – and laid the opponent on the spot.Many other teams tried to lure him away from the “geniuses”, but Matt remained loyal to the team due to friendship. On the other team, “he would never have had this much fun,” Tyndale says.
Tyndale’s best memories of his time with Evil Geniuses are not from tournament battles. Team 3D creator Craig “Torbull” Levin is considered the “godfather” of American esports. While still a student at New York University’s Stern School of Business, Levin began working at an internet cafe called Web2zone in Manhattan’s bohemian East Village.In 2002, a cafe owner, a top business development manager at Samsung, told him that the South Korean conglomerate could sponsor Levin if he created a team capable of breaking through to World Cyber Games.
Levin contacted some of the best players he had previously played with and who were in free agent status (not assigned to other teams. – Approx. Jason Lake’s CompLexity team was not inferior to Team 3D in daring and pressure. Lake himself had never played Counter-Strike before meeting his dorm roommate at Emory University Law School in Atlanta, Georgia. Angel Muñez realized that he was more attracted to a career as an entrepreneur than as a logistics manager for an expanding CPL. The quality of the tournaments began to decline. In 2006, a rival championship, the World Series of Video Games, kicked off and lured away CPL’s largest sponsor, Intel, and took over the CPL’s rights to host some of the tournaments.
Lake, however, was still trying to attract investment from outside and pumped in thousands of his own dollars to keep his team afloat. One of Team 3D’s top players, Kyle “Ksharp” Miller, left esports for a steady income at a tech company just months after he was featured in the Washington Post . Meanwhile, Alex Garfield’s Evil Geniuses have yet to win a single serious tournament.
The most obvious channel for attracting public attention – and a lot of money – to esports has appeared to be television.It could very well have done for the gaming industry what it did for skateboarding and grunge music: make esports cool and awesome. MTV aired an esports documentary in 2005 and covered CPL tournaments on several occasions, but the channel refused to broadcast regularly to the league. The gaming industry needed someone who believed in its potential, who could see that it could become a real entertainment industry, offering promising careers to its stars.
Fortunately, such a perspicacious media person was found.David Hill, president of entertainment broadcasting at direct broadcasting company DirecTV, owned by News Corp., is addicted to a shooter called Medal of Honor. This Australian native played for hours in his home office, hiding from his wife there. He told her that he was extremely busy with work. He had seen his grandchildren play and knew that the recent ESPN poker championships had been a huge success. He believed that with the help of television, you can make a spectacle out of esports just as well.
Hill forced DirecTV to create their own esports league. The richly decorated stage was flooded with streams of light and the enthusiastic roar of the crowd of spectators – the fans were divided into two teams, ordered to support each in accordance with the script; there were very few real fans among them. Fatal1ty grew up in Kansas City. Levin left Team 3D thinking he could do more as a tournament organizer. He became the league’s general counsel. The CGS League’s first season draft for six of its American teams (ten more league teams played in other regions of the world) took place at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. As in other sports leagues, the teams represented different cities in the United States, even if the players had nothing to do with the city that became the homeland for their team in the interests of marketing.Thus, New York became the city of Team 3D, and Los Angeles represented CompLexity. Even Evil Geniuses had to abandon their Canadian roots and become the “Chicago Chimera”. But this turned out to be not the only loss of the team.
Former Evil Genius captain Tyndale had already retired from games by then, but his former teammates had promised him a spot in the CGS league. Tyndale has no regrets. The line “professional gamer” on his resume always stimulates interesting dialogues during recruiting interviews, and he also has a heavy bronze medal from the Singaporean WCG tournament, where Evil Geniuses finished third.
Alex Garfield, then in his fourth year of college, applied to be the general manager of EG in the CGS league.But he could not boast of a single resounding victory in tournaments, and his character was slightly detached and restrained – in short, he was not at all suitable for television.
He was refused. “They left me that way. With a nose – with a giant fucking nose. I was going to drop everything, ”Garfield recalled. “It was a damn grim summer.”

He recalls one of the commercials – a player disguised as a ninja running on rooftops. “I was losing my enthusiasm more and more,” he admits. “Instead of focusing on the competition itself and on the real personalities of the esports players, they tried to turn it all into something laughable.”But he continued to believe in the future of esports, and in May 2008 he sold his law firm in Georgia and moved with his wife and children to Los Angeles, closer to where CGS held their tournaments.
According to Esports Heaven , the first season of CGS had fifty million viewers, 90% of them in Asia.
