As the 2019 Gear Reviews roll on, we’ve got another set of products to check out from Maverik Lacrosse. This time we’re talking about their shafts, with a specific focus on the 2019 metal offerings that Maverik has on tap, and how the consistency of a great metal shaft is a truly wonderful thing.

For Maverik’s shafts in 2019, one thing was clear before I even picked one up — the look is super toned down and streamlined, and each and every Maverik shaft for 2019 is a sleek approach to lettering, logos, and branding. Giant graphics, bright colors, and over the top looks are nowhere to be found, and what we’re left with is a professional looking simplicity that I find really attractive. I got to check out the Union, Apollo, and Caliber shafts, and each of them is has a really clean and classy look.

Union Shaft from Maverik Lacrosse

The Union shaft is part of the traditional line of shaft shapes that Maverik offers, meaning the octagonal walls of the shaft are relatively flat and without any concave areas. It’s the most common and standard shaft wall design on the market, but the Union does stand out in a couple places and one of those that jumps out immediately is the bead blasted finish, which gives the shaft a great grippy feel, without the need for much tape, if any. Picking the shaft up, you feel an instant connection with the stick, and you know your hands will never slip.

The other impressive attributes of this shaft don’t jump out at you visually, but there is plenty of other good stuff going on. The material used (Scandium/Titanium alloy) is tough and strong, but the dynamic wall taper aspect of the stick is really cool and explains how the shaft is so light, and yet so strong. What is happening here is that when the shaft is extruded, certain portions of the shaft get more material and are thicker, while other parts get less and are thinner. This allows the areas of the shaft that take the biggest beating to also be the strongest areas, and when it comes to durability and strength for a light shaft, this is a big advantage.

This is a great shaft for midfielders or attackmen who play and ride physically. It will stand up to the rigors of playing defense and throwing hard checks, but when you switch to offense you can still rip rope, dangle, and show out on the other side of the ball. The Union brings it all together in one place, and it’s a great option for the do-it-all grinders and it comes in classic silver, black, and gunmetal options.

Apollo Shaft from Maverik Lacrosse

The Apollo is Maverik’s lightest shaft, and it’s REALLY light. My first concern was that the shaft wouldn’t last very long, simply because it is so light, but to my surprise it held up well. For an offensive player looking to get the lightest shaft they can, the Apollo is a great option.

The Apollo shaft is part of Maverik’s “Speed Shape” line, meaning the two wider walls of the shaft on either side bow inwards. This allows for less metal to be used, and creates a unique shape that scorers like Joey Sankey have come to love. The shaft comes in a smooth finish or a bead blasted finish, and that extra level of choice is nice. The Apollo, like the Union shaft, also incorporates the dynamic wall taper of the shaft through the metal extrusion process, and this keeps the Apollo super light, but reinforced just enough in the right places.

Scorers, shooters, magicians – this Scandium Titanium alloy wand is for you and it comes in classic gold, silver, black, and gunmetal colors. I like options!

Caliber Shaft from Maverik Lacrosse

The Caliber shaft is Maverik’s strongest shaft. They sent me this d-pole to check out and while I feel like I could definitely do some damage with it, I was also impressed at just how the light the full length pole turned out to be. My first test of a pole is to bend it, I just can’t help myself, and when I did this with the Caliber, it really did not flex very much at all. As a former college defenseman, this made me happy. When I throw a check, I want it to stick, and I need it to matter. A stiff shaft helps my cause! There was nothing worse than a wet noodle for a pole.

The signature shape of the shaft is also interesting, as each of the four corners bow inwards at a 90 degree angle. This produces strength in the shaft design, but I also really like the feel of the indented corners, particularly for a longstick. The finish is bead blasted but feels relatively smooth, and once again, the graphics are toned down and classic.

The Caliber comes in silver or black so whether you’re looking to keep it light and classic or all black, you’re good to go. This shaft can help you hand out a good defensive beating, but it won’t hold you back one bit when you’re clearing the ball or pushing transition.

Final Thoughts

While all three of the shafts I reviewed are very different, they each maintain a couple of very important aspects when it comes to quality. Each is designed for a different purpose, and different player, but all three are stiff, strong, and very light. Each shaft design is clean and simple, and each one takes a military grade metal and applies it seamlessly to lacrosse. Add on the ABE (adjustable butt end) that comes with each shaft and we are talking about a really high-level, complete product.

Whether you’re a scorer looking for the lightest shaft out there, a grinder who does it all who wants a shaft that can do the same, or a defender looking to make a big impression, Maverik has a metal shaft that will match up with your needs.

True Lacrosse Comp SF Lacrosse Shaft Review

After years of quietly working away in the background, manufacturing shafts for some of the biggest brands in lacrosse, True Temper have finally launched their own line.

The Comp SF headlines the release and when you look at the features it’s going to turn heads.

With features like their exclusive “SmartPly” composite shaft design, revolutionary grip coating, extremely lightweight design and various “SmartFlex” options, it rubs shoulders with the leading shafts in the market.

Material & weight

The shaft weighs 6.2 oz, which put’s in in the light range. It’s actually 0.1oz lighter than its sister, the 7075 alloy shaft.

The shaft is a carbon fibre shaft and is manufactured using their exclusive SmartPly process. This involves fibres being placed at specific optimised angles and constructed into a unidirectional carbon fibre layer. Up to 25 of these layers goes into each shaft.

This gives you a highly optimised shaft design which scientifically places the carbon fibres to give you a super strong shaft.

One big question I had about carbon fibre shafts was whether they were any stronger than a metal shaft. But what I’ve learned is that it’s very difficult to compare because of one main difference.

Their approach to handling flex.

A metal based shaft uses its strength to work against the forces applied to keep it straight. It’s a battle between the stress applied and its strength.

Carbon fibre shafts don’t fight the stress, but actually go with it. It allows the shaft to flex which acts like a buffer to reduce the initial impact of the force. It stores the energy in the shaft and releases it at the end, giving you the whip.

The True Temper Comp SF shafts are fitted with SmartFlex, which gives you the choice of two levels of flex. The Flex 6 or the Flex 9.

The Flex 6, the model we tested, has more flex and is geared towards junior and high school players.

The Flex 9 is more firm and has less flex. It’s designed with professional and senior players in mind.

Shape

The shafts had a standard octagonal shape with a slight concave curve of the sides. This is a good thing, despite that fact that I prefer a more concave shaft.

Some shafts have a more concave shape to give them more grip. The sharper edges make it easier to hold. They do this primarily because the shaft itself has virtually no grip.

Any amount of concave curve on the Comp SF 4.0 shaft wouldn’t work. A more concave shape would make it more difficult for the grip coating to come into play. We touch on that in the next section.

One thing I noticed is that the diameter of the shaft felt a little smaller. It’s a standard 1 inch thickness, but the lack of the pointy edges you get from concave shafts make it feel so.

It’s nothing to worry about but it’s good to know ahead of time that it’ll feel different.

Grip

The grip. Oh how I love the grip!

It’s not tacky, it’s not sticky and it’s not rough. It’s ooooh so good! The weird thing is that the grip feels kind of smooth which is completely counter intuitive.

The grip is a result of tiny little glass beads or microspheres being incorporated into the shafts coating. The spheres reduce the surface area in contact with the gloves, thereby reducing the friction and allowing a faster transition of your hands on the shaft.

The surface is also matched to the palm of your gloves. So when you apply pressure to the shaft, the grip will engage and lock the two surfaces together, increasing your hold and control.

This style of grip is great for your gloves because it’s consistent throughout the length of the shaft. It doesn’t grab or catch your gloves like how grip tape or a rougher surface would.

Wear and tear

Being that we tested the Flex 6 I expected the flex to be noticeable, but it wasn’t. The shaft was very firm and none of our players remarked on it. This is good because it makes for an easier transition from other metals.

During our testing, the shaft held up very well. After a couple of weeks of there were a couple of tiny chips out of it, but they were barely visible. But the most impressive aspect was no dents. Nada.

This shaft is pretty tough.

True Temper Lacrosse – In Lacrosse We Trust

True Temper Sports has been one of those companies that you never heard of, but probably used their products. According to their website, they have been designing and manufacturing shafts as a supplier for other lacrosse brands since 2004. With lacrosse growing the way that it is, they have decided to enter the market with their own brand of lacrosse shafts, True.

What this means is that there is a new brand of shafts out there, but they are by no means new to the game. They were nice enough to send us a pair of their new shafts to try out, and I am here to tell you what I found. What they sent were one of their alloy shafts and a composite. Overall, I really like the styling of both of these. It’s a simple “True” in large font in the middle of each shaft. A nice touch is also at the bottom just above the butt end where the shaft model is printed. It isn’t anything amazing, but it adds some nice style to them. Also, near the top is listed the model, grip type and flex value. Now let’s take a closer look at the alloy model.

ALLOY

The TRUE Alloy 2.0 shaft is what can best be described as an entry-level aluminum shaft. It is made out of the 7075 alloy, which is found in a handful of other shafts in the marketplace such as the STX Surgeon and Brine Swizzbeat. It has what they call a sandblast finish, which means that it isn’t smooth, but it isn’t what I would call a rough finish either. If you are looking for a lot of grip, I don’t think that it will replace tape or a rubberized type of finish.

As far as shape goes it is not a deep concave grip and the corners are a little sharper, rather than completely rounded off. That gives you a good feel for the stick, which is better for beginner players. If you aren’t looking to spend a ton of money on a shaft, this is definitely a good option for you. It is lightweight, relatively strong for most levels of play and priced at a point that won’t break the bank if you need to replace it (it retails around $60). It comes in the black model (shown) and silver.

From a use perspective, it comes with several holes predrilled to fit a few different brands of heads, which is great to see. Since they are only a shaft manufacturer, this makes a ton of sense. I threw a head on there, there was no rattle or anything, and it had a nice feel to it. I wouldn’t hesitate at all to recommend this to someone.

COMPOSITE

The second shaft they sent along was the COMP SF 2.0, which is a composite, rather than metal alloy. Not only does this make it a very lightweight shaft, but it give it some outstanding flex. I’ll be honest, my upper body strength is incredibly lacking to a point I’m a little ashamed to admit. With that said, I could take this shaft and visibly bend it with just my hands on each end. Noticing that right out of the box, I was a little nervous to see how it would react with passing and shooting. Regarding the grip, it is definitely a rougher grip than the alloy and the corners are a bit more rounded. I haven’t felt the need to add tape for grip on this at all and haven’t had any issues playing in the rain.

Once I put a head on there, I was really anxious to see how it performed with passing and shooting given the flex it allows. With passing, there was absolutely no difference between this and the alloy shaft. Even when throwing quicker passes, I still had no problem. Shooting was a different story. The first time I really was able to wind up, it came off the stick way earlier than I was expecting. After a few more tries, I noticed that you really can feel the bend of the stick when taking a hard shot.

The more I have used this stick, the more I love it. Shooting feels much more natural and I have a better feel for the ball when using this stick, which I was not expecting at all. I didn’t have a radar gun to see if it increases shot velocity, but I do anecdotally feel that it helped my accuracy at least a little bit. My only remaining concern is with regards to durability. I have played in a few games and several practices with it and there isn’t so much as a scratch or dent in it at all. My true (no pun intended) test for a shaft is always going to be box lacrosse, but that doesn’t start for me for a while yet, so I will post an update if there is anything major to report there. Overall, I do feel pretty confident with it at the moment.

The COMP shaft is priced really well to in comparison to competition. At around $110 retail, it is at the low end of the elite shaft lineup available and priced under other composite shafts. I don’t think you need to have a 90 MPH shot to take advantage of this technology, but you won’t be able to fully utilize it if you are not someone who takes hard, outside shots. My personal recommendation is that this shaft is definitely worth a look and it quickly has become my new gamer. The COMP shaft is shown in white, but is also available in black, blue, and red.

Both of these are good, quality shafts that come in at a competitive price point at full retail based on the pricing I’ve seen so far. If you are in the market for a new setup, I would add True to your list to check out.

Description and meaning of error P0017

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code, so it means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles, including but not limited to Ford, Dodge, Toyota, VW, Honda, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Acura, etc.The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor work in harmony to monitor spark / fuel delivery and timing. They both consist of an areluctor, or tone, a ring that passes over a magnetic sensor, which produces avoltage, indicating position. The crankshaft sensor is part of the basic ignitionsystem and functions as a trigger. It detects the location of crankshaftrelays that information is on to the PCM or ignition module (depending on thevehicle) in order to control the spark timing.The camshaft position sensor detects the position of the camshafts and transmits information to the PCM. PCM uses cmp signal to determine the start of the injector sequence. What ties these two shafts andtheir transducers together a timing belt or chain. The cam and crank must be precisely matched together. If the PCM detects that the arm and cam signals are out of time by a specific number of degrees, this DTC will set. Bank 1 is the side of the engine containing cylinder # 1, sensor B is most likely the side of the exhaust camshaft.Note. on some models, it is not uncommon to see this DTC in conjunction with P0008, P0009, P0016, P0018, and P0019. If you own a GM vehicle and have multiple DTCs, check the service bulletins that may apply to your engine.

Symptoms of a P0017 code

P0017 symptoms will or may include: malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination the engine may run but with reduced performanceThe engine may crank but not startthe engine may show a ratchet near the harmonic balancer indicating damagedThe toner may start and run, but poorly

Possible causes of the P0017 code

How do I resolve the P0017 code?

If your vehicle is new enough to still be covered by the powertrain warranty, please have your dealer repair it.First, visually inspect the cam and crank sensors and their harnesses for damage. If you notice broken / frayed wires, repair and recheck. If you have access to the area, check out the cam and crank models. If the pattern ismissing, suspect a bad gauge or sliding ring tone. Remove the crankshaft cam gear and harmonic balancer and check the tone rings for proper alignment and make sure they are not lost or damaged or that they have not cut off the key that creates them.If they are correctly installed, replace the sensor. If the signal appears normal, check the timing chain / belt for properalignment. If it is misaligned, check for a damaged tensioner that could allow the chain / belt to slide a tooth or multiple teeth. Also make sure the belt / chain is not tensioned. Repair and rechecking. If this DTC appears on a Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon pickup and you have a P0014 DTC at the same time, go here for a possible solution: Densolor Cam / Crank Position DTCs Please consult your factory repair manual if you need specific vehicle information .
