Dionne Announced as Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach

CASTLETON, Vt. – Josh Dionne has been named the next head women’s lacrosse coach at Castleton University Associate Dean for Athletics and Recreation Deanna Tyson announced Friday.
Dionne, a graduate of Duke University, comes to Castleton after one season at Proctor Academy where he coached boy’s lacrosse. He was tasked with overseeing practice and game preparation, travel, budgets and scheduling.
“We are thrilled to welcome Josh to our staff,” said Tyson. “The wealth of knowledge that he brings from both playing and coaching experience will be a great asset to Castleton. We are confident that he will help upkeep the tremendous track record of the program.”
“I am honored and excited to join Castleton as the women’s lacrosse head coach,” said Dionne. “I want to thank Deanna Tyson for this incredible opportunity and for believing in my leadership abilities. The sport of lacrosse has given me everything and I am eager to share my passion with the amazing student-athletes here at Castleton.”
Prior to Proctor Academy, Dionne spent two seasons as an assistant for the University of North Carolina women’s lacrosse team where he was in charge of offensive game-planning, recruiting and scouting reports. While at UNC, Dionne helped guide the Tarheels to a national semi-final appearance as well as a pair of ACC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.
Dionne also spent two years assisting the United States Naval Academy women’s lacrosse program, where he developed and executed successful team culture on and off the field, ran summer camps, assisted in recruiting and organized film breakdown.
A standout lacrosse player for the Blue Devils, Dionne was drafted following his senior year with the 18th overall pick in the Major League Lacrosse draft. He graduated as Duke’s eighth all-time leading goal scorer while ranking 20th in total points. He was a two-time USILA All-America Honorable Mention, and helped guide Duke to a pair of National Titles. His team reached the national semifinals in all four seasons in his time as a player.

Josh Dionne played collegiate lacrosse for Duke.
Castleton University’s new women’s lacrosse coach Josh Dionne was just a small town kid from Merrimack, New Hampshire, a place not known for lacrosse.
Dionne had to find a way to teach and develop himself on the lacrosse field without camps and clinics and being self-taught where he claims his love for coaching originated.
After a successful high school career at Avon a private institution in Connecticut doors were opened for through a scholarship to Duke University, a Division-1 nationally ranked program for lacrosse.
“Once I get there, it was an eye-opener. I didn’t know conditioning or weight lifting. I showed up as this ignorant kid to a D1 school and it was a kick in the butt the first fall I arrived. I was never pushed in Merrimack,” Dionne said.
Dionne would go on to win back-to-back national championships at Duke in 2013-2014 and he says those title moments stand out the most.
“In 2010, our whole platform for getting recruited was to win a national championship. The first title we started 1-4 and the fact that we came back and won it was pure joy, everything came to fruition. I remember just flashing back to sixth grade in the woods in New Hampshire just trying to get better,” said Dionne with a smile.
Dionne finished his career a three year starter at Duke with 140 goals and 22 assists totaling 162 points. Dionne was named a two-time USILA All-American honorable mention.
It proved, he said, that if you want something you have to work for it.
After Duke, Dionne had two short assistant coaching stints at the Naval Academy and University of North Carolina but he said it felt like something was missing.
“I thought coaching at the highest level at the age of 26 was going to be a storybook ending, but I quickly realized that I wasn’t coaching, it was more guiding. I realized that Castleton had this spot and they’ve been good but they haven’t had top-end coaching. I felt I could make waves,” he said.
Dionne hopes to bring positive reinforcement to the CU women’s lacrosse program and constantly remind them that they’re working toward a goal. He said he hopes to change their lives.
The impact is already starting to settle in just three short months, said senior captain Erin Shuttle.
“He’s an amazing coach who obviously wants to pass down his knowledge and is great at breaking down the basics and teaching. He just brings a different energy and enthusiasm to everything we do,” Shuttle said.
Since arriving at Castleton, Dionne said he has made it a point to not overcoach and said he really believes he has an opportunity that goes way past the game of lacrosse.
“I like to use the game and relate it to life. The reality is sports end for these girls so if I can make them realize what hard work can be capable of, hopefully they will take that far in life and someday get a great job and become great mothers, etcetera,” Dionne said.
Shuttle seems to be recognizing exactly what Dionne is hoping to build.
“It’s easy to tell that he truly cares about us and he want us to have fun and love what we’re doing every day. He wants to lead us to success and he knows how to do that,” she said.
The women’s lacrosse team has been dealing with constant change with three different coaches in just four seasons, which doesn’t generally translate to success.
Dionne wants to simply give these players a familiar face and something consistent.
“They haven’t fully been able to buy in and say ‘this is how you win a championship’ and now I can come and change the culture. They’re realizing that I am not here to police them, they understand that hard work on and off the field is going to lead to good things,” he said.
Senior captain Morgan Derosia has high hopes for her team in her final season as a Spartan.
“Win or lose, I know we are going to put in the work day in and day out. I think we are capable of some great things with this team and this coaching staff,” Derosia said.
Dionne is no stranger to big games and goals and he is motivated to put Castleton women’s lacrosse on the map in a short period of time.
“From my experience, you can’t make it about wins and losses. That creates people feeling like a failure when they don’t win. I want them to enjoy the process. I don’t think these girls smiled a day in the last few years on that field. My biggest goal is for them to smile every day and those will translate into wins. By year three I want to be in the second round of the NCAA tournament. I think once we reach that the sky is the limit with this program,” he said
Proctor Athletics Team Spotlight: Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse
Proctor Boys Lacrosse has multiple athletes who will soon be off to play at a collegiate level, but for now, their focus is to come together as a team and leave their mark on the competitive Lakes Region League. Last year, Proctor Boys Lacrosse said goodbye to not only eleven seniors, but their head coach as well. This year, with a brand new coach and some new additions to the team, they are committed to working tirelessly to pursue their full potential as a team.
Following the late-summer departure of former head lacrosse coach Travis Glennon, Proctor was very fortunate to land a coach with the experience and credibility of Josh Dionne. Most recently an assistant varsity women’s lacrosse coach at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Dionne is a former standout attack for Duke University’s National Champion lacrosse team. Dionne spent two years of high school at Brooks School where he became familiar with New England Prep School Lacrosse. A New Hampshire native, Dionne’s energy, enthusiasm, experience, and credibility with the players help Proctor be poised to further grow the school’s strong lacrosse tradition dating back to the 1960s.
Players on the lacrosse team expressed that it has been hard to have three different coaches in the last three years, as each coach has brought his own style of play and expectations to the program. Despite the uncertainty that accompanies a leadership change at the varsity level, this year’s lacrosse team is very much looking forward to working with their new coach who has endless knowledge to offer and will be working hard to help these boys elevate their level of play in order to be successful as a team. The team believes they are quickly forming a bond, not only with one another as teammates but with their new head coach as well, due in large part to the group’s spring training trip to San Diego over March break. We caught up with a few members of the team to ask about their very young season and their goals for the weeks ahead.
What will be your biggest challenge this season?
Scott Witkos ‘21 (FOGO/Midfield): Our biggest challenge this season is going to be making sure that our guys stay healthy. Lacrosse is a very physical sport, and we are constantly putting in hard work day in and day out. That being said there is not much room for injury. We are not too deep in all of our positions so keeping all of our players healthy will be essential as we face a challenging schedule, especially during the final few weeks of the season. It is our responsibility to stay fit, to encourage each other, and to look out for each other on the field if we are going to keep our players in top playing condition all the way throughout the end of our season.”
What do is necessary for you guys to have a successful season?
Patrick Murphy ‘20 (Attack): “Quite simply, we are going to have to believe in one another as a group. If each and every individual puts in their best hard work and listens to the other voices that are around, then we will do well together as a team. I can’t preach enough how important it is for us to work as a team and play as a team rather than playing for ourselves. This is easier said than done on a high school team. We need to put all social problems or status’s aside when it comes to listening to each other and respecting each other when we are together on the field. If we can do that, I think we are going to have a successful season.”
Now that you are a few games in, how are you feeling about the season? What adjustments are necessary?
Murphy: “So far we are off to a good start to the season, we had one rough game (loss to Tabor Academy), but we have played well in the other two. We are learning from the mistakes that we have already made, improving on them, and moving forward. We are still new together as a team and we are learning to play well with each other and work off each other’s strengths so that we can continue to compete against the high competition.”
We also caught up with new head coach Josh Dionne about his transition to this team and his coaching philosophy.
How do you feel the spring break trip to San Diego helped the team bond and helped you jump into this role?
The spring break trip to San Diego was my first chance seeing these guys play. I wanted to show them how much fun they can have while still becoming better lacrosse players. When we first arrived we went to a gorgeous beach and played some lacrosse. Some of the kids hadn’t traveled much so it was cool to show them that they are able to both have fun while still working hard and improving as players and as a team. We hope to see more faces on our spring break trip next year, it is a great opportunity to get the rust off at the start of the season while having a great time as well.
What is your approach to jumping into coaching a new lacrosse team?
I want our team to play fast and to highlight their athleticism. I played lacrosse for Duke in college and I feel like I did not learn the right skills until I got there, I want to teach these guys early. What’s cool for me is that my coaching style puts a lot of responsibility in the players themselves. I give them a lot of freedom to learn on their own because, in the end, it’s not about the coach it’s about the players making decisions in the heat of the moment during the game. The more independence we can instill in them as coaches, the better able they will be to execute come game time.

We set the standard for finding emails
Trusted by over 9. 0 million users and 95% of the S&P 500.
We had no where to begin. Scouring the web at all hours of the night wasn’t gonna cut it. RocketReach has given us a great place to start. Our workflow has solid direction now – we have a process in place the begins with RocketReach and ends with huge contact lists for our sales team..it probably saves Feedtrail about 3 months of work in terms of lead gathering. We can divert our attention to actually going after the customer now!
Great for building a list of leads. I loved the ability to determine personal emails from virtually anyone on the web with RocketReach. I was assigned a project recently that regarded public relations, partnership, and outreach responsibilities and RocketReach not only connected me to prospective individuals but allowed me to streamline my search approach on the basis of location, skill set, and keyword.

Prior to RocketReach, we would reach out to people through professional networking sites like Linkedln. But it was frustrating for us to have to wait for people to accept our connection requests (if they accepted them at all) and sending is too expensive..this was a major speed bump in our workflow and source of never ending frustration.. With the shear number of contacts we’ve been able to find using RocketReach, the platform has probably saved us nearly five years’ worth of waiting.
It’s the best, most effective email search engine I’ve used yet, and I’ve tried a few. Both in the scope of the searches, and in the number of accurate emails found, I find it surpasses others. I also like the layout, which is easy on the eye, more attractive and efficient. The bottom line is that it has been a effective tool in my work, as a non-profit reaching out to leadership.
Before RocketReach, the process of sourcing email addresses consisted of scouring the internet, asking mutual friends, or stalking on LinkedIn. The most frustrating part was how time consuming this all was.The first time I used RocketReach was when I realized I made the right decision. Finding emails for contacts turned into a one-and-done instead of a week long process.
Looking up emails for a targeted outreach was manual and enormously time consuming. When I tried RocketReach and to find business information about key people in seconds in an easy and seamless process, I was hooked! The tool reduced the time to connect with new prospects by close to 90%.

Duke eases past Stony Brook; Dionne scores 100th goal
DURHAM, N.C. — Duke’s defense held visiting Stony Brook scoreless in the first half while senior Josh Dionne joined the 100-goal club as the No. 1 Blue Devils posted a 14-6 win on Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils improve to 4-0 while the Seawolves fall to 1-2. The win pushes Duke’s win streak to nine dating back to May 5, 2013.
“Offensively, I thought we moved the ball and were unselfish,” head coach John Danowski said. “I think we would have liked to have gotten one or two more, but certainly going into the locker room with a seven goal lead we were happy.”
Duke’s Jordan Wolf, who matched his career high with seven total points on the day, scored two goals in the opening half as the Blue Devils raced to a 7-0 lead. Goalkeeper Luke Aaron, who surrendered just two goals before giving way to Justin Turri after three periods, carded eight of his career-high 11 saves in the opening 30 minutes.
Stony Brook got on the board after 31:03 and added five more as the Blue Devils only outscored the Seawolves 7-6 in the final 30 minutes.
With a pair of tallies, Dionne became the 16th player in Duke history to reach the 100-goal plateau. The group includes Wolf (130) and current Duke assistant coach Matt Danowski (170). Deemer Class, Kyle Keenan and Case Matheis added two goals each as Duke won its third game in three tries against Stony Brook.
The two goals for Keenan give him six for the year, which is just two shy of matching his combined total form his first two seasons. Keenan owns two goals in three of Duke’s four games this season and has at least one point in all four.
The Blue Devil defensive unit was spearheaded by Casey Carroll, who logged five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Brendan Fowler (9 of 15) and Jack Rowe (6 of 8) combined for a 15 of 23 effort at the faceoff X.
“It’s been really easy [settling in],” Aaron said. “It’s been seamless. The guys in front of me make it easy. The defense is playing really stout and has made my job really easy.”
For Stony Brook, Brody Eastwood logged three goals while Matt Schultz had one goal and two assists. In the net, Dan Shaughnessy was credited for 11 saves.
No. 6 Denver 14, Canisius 3
DENVER — Sixth-ranked Denver won the finale of the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic, defeating Canisius 14-3 on Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Denver now sits at 3-1 on the season after posting a perfect 2-0 mark this weekend.
Sophomore transfer Jack Bobzien led the Pioneers with five points off four goals and an assist, while junior Erik Adamson finished with three goals and an assist for four points. Bobzien finished with his third hat trick of the season, fourth of his career, while Adamson picked up his fourth career hat trick.
Junior Wesley Berg continued his scoring ways with a goal, while also dishing out two assists to finish with three points. Junior Sean Cannizzaro finished with two points off a goal and an assists.
Junior goalie Ryan LaPlante made four saves and secured the win, seeing 30 minutes of action.
Tim Edwards, Sam Connors and Jeff Edwards all scored for the Golden Griffins.
90,000 Five orders for hockey Santa Claus
The difficult schedule of hockey players, especially those playing overseas, leaves them almost no time for these usual New Year’s joys. Why not help them and order for them from Santa Claus the fulfillment of their most cherished desires? Naturally, every player dreams of scoring the decisive goal in the seventh overtime of the Stanley Cup Final Series, and we certainly want that for everyone. However, it is probably worth talking about more realistic plans.

For example, for Vladimir Tarasenko from St. Louis and Ilya Mikheev from Toronto, health is now the most important thing. I really want them to return to the level at which they played before their injuries.
Ilya Kovalchuk should wish to find a new team, Evgeny Malkin – not to slow down at Pittsburgh, Anton Khudobin – to convince general managers that he is capable of being the number one NHL team, so that in the summer after the end of the current contract with Dallas, he would line up behind him real queue. For many young players – from Valentin Zykov to Mikhail Vorobyov – success in 2020 will simply be to gain a foothold in their current teams, but Nikita Kucherov will not be satisfied with any other outcome of the year, except for Tampa’s victory in the Stanley Cup – even if he breaks up with all individual titles.
It would be too long to list all Russian NHL employees, so let’s just say that we always worry about them and wish more points, awards and numbers in contracts. But we will still highlight five plans-wishes.
Alexander Ovechkin, Washington
Why him?
Ovi is the face of Russian hockey in the NHL, and there is hardly anything to add here.
Plan-2020
We will not talk about team trophies – in the case of the leading NHL “Washington” this is implied by itself. We will even leave aside the “Maurice Richard Trophy”, which could be the ninth in Ovechkin’s career. The plan for 2020 should be 50 goals, 19 of which Alexander will score in the majority. In this case, he will rise from the current 12th to the fifth place in history in terms of the number of goals scored, of which he has 682 so far in his career. Another fifty dollars – and he will bypass Marcel Dionne (731), approaching very close to Brett Hull (741). And 19 goals in the majority will allow him to overtake Dave Andreychuk, who scored 274 such goals, and will make him the most goals-scoring player in the history of the league in the draw of the numerical advantage. For any European, such a record is an unheard-of achievement.
Video: The main Russian moments of 2019
Sergey Bobrovsky, Florida
Why him?
Owner of two “Vezins” and, as a result, the most titled NHL goalkeeper of the last decade, on which Russian goalkeepers will be equal for a long time.
Plan-2020
Bobrovsky barely mastered in Florida after moving from Columbus, reflecting an extremely uncharacteristic 88.4% of the shots in October-November. In December, things seemed to be on the mend – six games in a row Sergei worked wonders, reflecting at least 92.7%, but the end of the month, when he conceded four, six and five goals against Dallas, Tampa and Montreal, left questions again.
Florida are now in the playoffs, but Tampa, who played one match less, are literally one point behind.Do not go to a fortune-teller – if the Panthers do not get into the Stanley Cup, a significant part of the blame for this will be placed on the Russian goalkeeper. Therefore, we really want to wish him to find his own game in order to avoid harsh criticism and the title of the most unsuccessful summer signing-2019 in terms of price-result ratio.
Artemy Panarin, Rangers
Why him?
The only Russian representative at the 2020 All-Star Game, and we simply could not pass by.
Plan-2020
Well, what more could you wish for Artemy Panarin? He has everything – from a beautiful girlfriend to a long-term and pleasant contract in all respects.
Panarin, with his 14 millionth salary, cost the Rangers even more than Bobrovsky Florida, but in this case no skeptic will tell you that it was a bad investment. His 51 (21 + 30) points after 38 matches is 16 (!) More than his closest teammate Ryan Strom, whom Panarin himself turned into a scorer. But, like any hockey player, Panarin is interested not only and not so much in individual achievements as in the team result. If he manages to pull the Rangers, who are in the process of restructuring, into the playoffs, this will be a grand total for 2020. It is extremely difficult to eliminate the six-point gap from the cup zone with a semi-youth squad, but with the help of Panarin (and a little – Santa Claus) why not happen?
Video: NYR-CAR: Panarin increases the lead
Andrey Svechnikov, Karolina
Why him?
A rising Russian star who will shine in the NHL skyline for the next decade.
Plan 2020
Svechnikov’s first lacrosse goal in NHL history is one of the most vivid memories for a Russian fan in 2019. It would be nice if in 2020 Andrey pleased us with other tricks from his arsenal, but he wants to wish him something else.
To become the top scorer of your team in less than 20 years, surpassing the “point per game” schedule is a very solid achievement, especially when the coaches give only 16 and a half minutes of playing time per match. At the equator of the season, Svechnikov is close to implementing this plan, having 38 (17 + 21) points in 39 fights, the same as Teivo Teravainen (7 + 31).
Video: VIN-CAR: Svechnikov scored the puck for the second time
Nikita Gusev, New Jersey
Why him?
The KHL envoy, by which the strength of the Russian league will be judged in North America.
Plan-2020
Gusev moved overseas in the status of the KHL top scorer (17 + 65 = 82 in 65 matches for SKA), but the adaptation to New Jersey, where he got in transit through Vegas, did not turned out to be easy.Journalists criticized the striker for a passive game without a puck, which is very strict in the NHL, and the coaches even sent him to watch hockey on the podium. Gusev perceived this without whims, but reeling on a mustache and drawing conclusions. In recent matches, he not only scores points (2 + 6 = 8 in six games from 18 to 29 December), but also receives compliments for his reliable performance on the defensive.
In New Jersey, after the departure of Taylor Hall, the role of the team leader was left free, and the 27-year-old Gusev is ready for it, perhaps better than the first numbers of the 2017 and 2019 drafts Nico Hishir and Jack Hughes. It is this – the unofficial title of the leader of the Devils – that I would like to wish Gusev in the upcoming 2020. In Russia they know that this guy is capable of a lot. I would like to see this in North America as well.
90,000 Top-10 goals of Russians at the moment of the season
1. Alexander Ovechkin. February 22. New Jersey – Washington (3: 2)
On that day, the Capitals lost, conceding the decisive puck in the minority with 1:59 to the end of the third period. But everyone forgot about the result, and the 700th goal of Ovechkin was remembered forever. The captain of “Washington” scored the anniversary puck in the fifth minute of the third period, leveling the score in the match. Evgeny Kuznetsov made a comfortable pass from behind the goal, and Ovechkin, not from the most familiar position (right, not left, throw-in circle) powerfully threw into touch. The Russian joined the elite “Club 700”, which also includes Wayne Gretzky (894 goals), Gordy Howe (801), Jaromir Jagr (766), Brett Hull (741), Marcel Dionne (731), Phil Esposito (717) and Mike Gartner (708).
2.Andrey Svechnikov.29th of October. Carolina – Calgary (2: 1)
The Carolina forward, who turned 20 on March 26, has scored several beautiful goals this season, as you can see by watching the video below. But one of them became a truly historic event. On October 29, by the middle of the third period, the Hurricanes were inferior to the Flames with a score of 0: 1, but then Svechnikov got down to business, who issued a double and snatched a victory for his team.
His first goal was especially spectacular.Svechnikov, standing outside the goal, lifted the puck onto his stick and brought it to the top corner, scoring a lacrosse-style goal. The Russian became the first player in history who managed to perform a similar trick in an NHL match. Surprisingly, on December 17, he managed to do it again. In a duel against “Winnipeg” (6: 3) Svechnikov distinguished himself in a similar way in the second period with the score 2: 2. After that, before the second break, the Hurricanes hit the gates of the discouraged Jets two more times and secured a comfortable advantage.
“For the last two years he has been practicing this throw every day,” said the coach of “Carolina” Rod Brindamore about the spectacular trick performed by Svechnikov. when he succeeds. ”

3. Alexander Ovechkin. March 1. “Minnesota” – “Washington” (3: 4)
Ovechkin scored twice in this match, but his second goal was especially significant. After all, he was assisted by Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilya Kovalchuk, who scored the first point for the Capitals in a duel with the Wild. It was Kovalchuk who launched a counterattack, which led to a “three in two” exit. The veteran left the puck to Kuznetsov, who sent it to Ovechkin’s shot. The captain of “Washington” in such situations rarely misses. The Russian troika in that meeting played together for more than four minutes and reminded Russian fans of the glorious days of Detroit.

4. Valery Nichushkin. November 23rd. “Colorado” – “Toronto” (3: 5)
Nichushkin started the season well for Avalanche and played generally actively, but it was not possible to score the first goal for the new club for almost two months. It finally happened on 23 November. Valeriy distinguished himself in the third period, having successfully played on finishing moves. After that, the backlog of “Colorado” was reduced to a minimum (3: 4), but the team failed to pick up the impulse. This is how Nichushkin interrupted his long-drawn-out streak without scored goals from 91 matches.Prior to this goal, he last scored in the NHL on March 4, 2016.
“Those who watch me play know perfectly well how many chances I had. The puck just didn’t fly in and didn’t fly into the goal,” said Nichushkin, who then literally burst out. “I could not help but be nervous. Any athlete who does not give a result for a certain amount of time will engage in self-digging. Look in yourself, what is not working. When I finally excelled, psychologically it became much easier to play. It gave energy. “

5. Ilya Kovalchuk. January 11. “Ottawa” – “Montreal” (1: 2 OT)
Kovalchuk for a small segment in “Montreal” reminded himself of the best times. He scored his first goal for the new club on January 11. The Russian scored 52 seconds before the end of overtime against the Senators and helped the Canadiens end a streak of eight defeats. Kovalchuk grabbed the puck in the red line, drove to the left throw-in circle and powerfully threw it into the far corner from the brushes, and then, in a fit of joy, threw up his hands to heaven.
Video: OTT-MON: Kovalchuk brings victory to Montreal
On February 8, Kovalchuk managed something similar. It was he who finished a fantastic match for “Montreal” against the principal rival “Toronto” (2: 1 OT). The Canadiens tied the score with 2:33 to the end of the third period, and in the second minute of overtime snatched an extra point after successfully finishing off the Russian striker. Kovalchuk’s insane joy is hard to forget. The Russian literally went crazy and from the ice his hand showed in the direction of the stands where his family was sitting, perfectly understandable gestures of joy.”Look, dad can still!”
Video: MON-TOR: Kovalchuk brings victory to Montreal
6. Alexander Radulov. January 1st. “Dallas” – “Nashville” (4: 2)
It is not possible to score the decisive puck in the “Winter Classic” every day, which is why Radulov got into our hit parade. The Russian striker at the beginning of the third period made a 3: 2 score in favor of “Dallas” with a powerful and accurate throw-in-touch from the right throw-in circle, scoring a goal that was ultimately victorious. At that moment of the season, Radulov showed his best hockey. In a fight against Nashville, he extended the streak to nine games, in which he scored 12 (4 + 8) points.
Video: DAL-NESH: Radulov in the majority takes “Stars” forward
7. Denis Guryanov. October 24. “Dallas” – “Anaheim” (2: 1)
Now Guryanov with 20 goals is the best sniper of the team and five goals ahead of his more experienced compatriot. Well, our list includes Denis’s first goal of the season, which he scored on October 24.Guryanov, in principle, became the hero of that meeting, having thrown both goals of “Dallas”. But the first goal is worth mentioning separately. The Russian forward picked up the puck on the red line, drove to the right throw-in circle and threw it under the crossbar into the near corner from an uncomfortable hand. This goal was the second for the 22-year-old striker in the NHL, but, in fact, the first real one. Because the debut puck (last April in the match against Nashville) flew into the goal from his knee, and then not everyone even understood what had happened, so they congratulated his partner.
Video: DAL-ANA: Gibson did not cope with Guryanov’s throw
8. Ivan Provorov. November 30th. “Montreal” – “Philadelphia” (3: 4 OT)
How not to include a goal in the hit parade, about which after the match they talked more than about the game itself? Provorov put on a real benefit in overtime against the Canadiens, scoring the decisive goal after passing through the entire area and a feint with the puck between his legs. Incredibly elegant, light and beautiful!
“I stopped with the puck behind my goal, and then I saw that the opponent gave space,” Provorov commented on his gorgeous goal.- So I rolled forward and saw the forward rolling with his back to the goal. I thought that I have time and speed, I decided to try … And everything worked out. “
Video: MON-PHIL: Provorov draws a masterpiece in overtime
9. Evgeni Malkin. February 23. Washington – Pittsburgh “(5: 3)
” Pittsburgh “lost, but Malkin unconditionally became the author of the most beautiful goal of the match. In the ninth minute of the third period, he entered the alien zone, threw the puck between the legs of the main contender for the” Norris Trophy “John Carlson, and then sent her to Matt Murray’s gate.In general, this season Malkin has already scored many times due to individual skill. Given the Penguins’ endless injuries, this is not surprising. The forward takes over the game, and it turns out very well.
Video: YOUR-PIT: Malkin beat the defender and scored
10. Klim Kostin. November 23rd. “St. Louis” – “Nashville” (2: 4)
This season, several Russians have scored their debut goals in the NHL. These are Nikita Gusev, Ilya Mikheev, Vladislav Gavrikov, Yakov Trenin, Maxim Letunov, Egor Korshkov, Vitaly Abramov … We have not named two more people, both of whom are worthy to be in this hit parade.Forward “Los Angeles” Nikolai Prokhorkin December 2 in a duel with “Anaheim” scored a very nice goal, breaking between the two defenders and beautifully outplaying Ryan Miller. But he still did not make it into our top ten.
Video: ANA-LAK: Prokhorkin tears apart the Dax defense
Klim Kostin’s puck, perhaps, turned out to be less effective for someone. But she made his debut in the NHL, so her value increases dramatically. In the 14th minute of the first period of the fight with the “Predators”, the Russian forward picked up the puck in his zone, calmly walked to the alien zone and with a cool wrist throw from under the opponent struck Yuse Saros. We have no doubt that this is just the beginning!

“Great feeling,” Kostin said after the match. …

NHL Hall of Fame – myplanethockey – LiveJournal
How do you define the greatness of a hockey player? How to measure it? By titles? But many of the most worthy players did not win major tournaments for various reasons.Soviet hockey players did not take the Stanley Cups – the Iron Curtain interfered. Until recently, Canadian professionals have not touched the gold of the Olympics. And some of the undoubtedly greats were generally left without these two main team trophies, finding themselves in the wrong place and at the wrong time.
You can recall half a dozen names offhand. Peter Štastny , the best Slovak player of all time, broke records in the NHL almost on par with Gretzky and Lemieux , but never won the Stanley Cup. Marcel Dionne , the fifth scorer in league history, gave a career to the hopeless at the time, “Detroit” and “Los Angeles”. Bure with the long-suffering “Vancouver” … Eric Lindros , Adam Oates , Pat Lafontein …
Why are they, Gretzky himself, deeply buried in individual awards, for a long time could not boast of any team trophies, for which he was mercilessly criticized by the press and fans. “In the 1981/82 season, he became the most outstanding sniper in the entire history of the NHL ,” writes him
James Thomas Sutherland
Father Walter.- He broke all records: in the number of goals scored, assists and scored the most points. And then the Oilers lost to Los Angeles in the first round of the Stanley Cup, and people began to say and write: “Of course, he is a great hockey player, but you can call him great only if the Oilers win the Stanley Cup. The champion’s ring is the only proof of a hockey player’s greatness. ” Stupid arguments. If you accept them, then Gilbert Perrault cannot be considered a great player, because in the 14 years that he played for the Buffalo Sabers, they did not manage to get the Stanley Cup.The name of Brad Park, I am sure, will someday decorate the Hockey Hall of Fame, but in its best years, neither the New York Rangers nor the Boston Bruins then ever owned the coveted trophy. But really because of this we can not consider Park a great hockey player? ”
By the way, there are quite a few reverse cases, when a player has one, two, or even more Stanley Cups or Olympic titles, and one cannot call him great. How many middle peasants received the coveted ring only due to their superhuman luck or weak competition ?! Many American journalists are generally skeptical about the era of the Big Six.The New York Times once wrote that winning the Stanley Cup back then is like winning the Major League lacrosse now. Who did not understand, this is a hint of a small number of applicants.
But if greatness is not determined by cups, then by what? Personal statistics, which for a long time were practically ignored in our country and for which they simply pray overseas?
This is partly an objective criterion, but after all, this or that team was made great not only by virtuosos, but also by the porters of the piano. Their statistics are often very modest, but without them grandiose victories would be impossible.
Clarence Campbell
If it comes to goalkeepers, then all the statistics and does go to hell. Vladislav Tretyak , as you know, on average missed more than three goals per game (for our days – a very weak indicator), which did not prevent him from being the greatest goalkeeper of all times and peoples. But the NHL gates of the 20s were all record holders with a coefficient slightly above one. This is because, according to the then rules, transfers in the attack zone were prohibited.
Where are we heading? And besides, greatness in sports is an extensible and subjective concept. And so that the eyes of an ordinary fan do not scatter too much at the sight of a scattering of talented athletes, the Halls of Fame are needed, the abode of the best of the best, a meeting of the elite. Honored hockey figures – coaches, referees, journalists, stars of the past should determine people there.
IIHF, we honestly admit, turned its Hall of Fame into an unthinkable jumble of dozens of really great personalities and a number of very dubious
Bank of Montreal in Toronto in 1890 had no idea what would become the Hockey Hall of Fame
characters. Moreover, when the latter are turned on, the motives driving the officials, from political to egoistic, are easily guessed. The NHL, which received the Hall of Fame a good half century earlier, took the matter much more seriously, trying not to lose quality for the sake of quantity or base interests.
This, of course, did not always work out. The Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame was criticized for the introduction of controversial candidates (especially in the early 2000s), and for the emphasis on NHL players, coupled with disdain for European stars and BAH players, and for the overrepresentation of the Big Six members. But, unlike the IIHF, representatives of the Toronto Hall of Fame listened to criticism and accepted into their ranks, for example, Tretiak , Kharlamov and Tarasov . On the whole, their mistakes are not so critical and fit into the statistical error.
Each name in this Hall of Fame symbolizes an entire era in the history of world hockey. It would be a crime not to tell about all these people. But first, a little about the history of the Hall itself. With him, you know, a whole detective also came out …
IT ALL STARTED WITH A MAN
Let’s make a reservation right away: calling the Toronto Hall of Fame “NHL Hall of Fame” is not entirely correct, although it is convenient (you can immediately distinguish it from the IIHF Hall of Fame and all others). After all, the Hockey Hall of Fame, although fixated on the world’s major league, is not limited to it. And it was definitely not conceived as a free supplement to the NHL, but as a completely independent entity.
In the early to mid-twentieth century, there lived such a wonderful man in Canada – James Thomas Sutherland . A brave military man, and part-time – an amateur hockey player, who possessed imagination and enthusiasm, capable of moving the Earth out of orbit. For hockey, the sport of his entire life, Sutherland did as much as, it seems, even Einstein did not do for the theory of relativity. Here and the introduction to the rules of the positions of left and right defenders (imagine, until the 1910s, the position of players in hockey was completely different), and the creation of the Memorial Cup, and, as you already understood, the opening of the first hockey Hall of Fame.
NHL Hall of Fame “Iconostasis”
Loyal to his hometown Kingston, where he was called “the father of hockey,” James Thomas dreamed that this particular city would become a haven for hockey memorabilia and ice sports greats. He believed that it was Kingston, where the game between the teams of Queen’s University and the Royal War College took place in 1886, that belongs to the right to be considered the small homeland of hockey. And his opinion turned out to be authoritative enough for the NHL and KALH (Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, CAHA) to jointly decide to establish the first Hall there.
The sculptural group at the entrance to the Hockey Hall of Fame
By that time, baseball and golf already had their Halls of Fame, and therefore hockey officials could take them as a model. In April 1941, newspapers first wrote about the possible opening of the Hall, in November the ex-owner of Montreal Leo Danduran discussed this idea with representatives of the NHL, and in September 1943 amateurs and professionals finally reached an agreement.
True, the Hall of Fame appeared only on paper, in the form of a non-profit charitable organization. It did not have its own separate premises, and the first honorary members appeared in it only two years later. The next additions to this virtual but prestigious club took place in 1947, 1950 and 1952.
STOLEN HALL
Throughout the 40s and 50s, the NHL and KALH raised funds for the building for the Hall of Fame. The fact is that construction at that time was very expensive, and they were not used to squandering budget funds in billions, as is customary in Russia, abroad. We had to earn money ourselves.
Back in 1945, the NHL and KALH allocated 17.5 thousand dollars for the museum (a decent amount at that time), and two years later the teams of Boston, Chicago, New York and Toronto held a number of exhibition meetings, the collection from which went to the same goals. Moreover, in 1952 Kingston hosted a match between the local team and the Montreal Canadiens, also organized for the needs of the Hall of Fame.
To touch the shrines
Slowly but surely, everything went to the fact that soon a large construction project would begin in Kingston.James Sutherland, who dreamed of seeing the Hall in his small homeland, of course, no one dared to contradict because of his colossal authority. But the unexpected happened – on September 30, 1955, Sutherland died at the age of 84. And then the NHL leadership, who did not want to give such a significant museum to the city, where there is not even an NHL team, made a knight’s move.
Three years after Sutherland’s death, when the museum had not yet managed to raise enough funds to build a building in Kingston, NHL President Clarence Campbell not fit for his league. The NHL has already agreed with the National Exhibition of Canada to build a new Hall of Fame building in Toronto, the president said.
The original Stanley Cup is always in the NHL Hall of Fame
These words sounded like a bolt from the blue. The Kingstonians, from ordinary citizens to the mayor, were angry and resentful at the National League, but no one asked their opinion. In August 1958, just a couple of months after Campbell’s announcement, a temporary Hockey Hall of Fame opened in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.In just six months, its exposition was visited by more than 350 thousand people, and the NHL was finally convinced that the Hall there should become permanent.
The exhibition grounds were built with NHL money in record time – less than a year. The first permanent exhibition in 1961 was opened by the Prime Minister of Canada John Diefenbaker , and in the year of opening the Hall of Fame was visited by 750 thousand people, since until 1980 admission there was free. And all would be nothing, but only the dream of James Sutherland, the father of this project, remained unfulfilled.
However, Kingston nevertheless built his Hall of Fame in 1965 and even received the right to call it “international” (representatives of Toronto tried to sue this name, but failed), but members to this club have not been elected since 1966. This proved pointless after the Toronto Hall of Fame included all members of the Kingston era.
By the way, appreciate the irony of fate. In the late 70s, after a major renovation, the renovated International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston was opened by none other than Clarence Campbell, who left the post of NHL President. The same person who refused to support the Kingston Museum 20 years ago.
And one more illustrative episode. Since 1991, Kingston has been the location of the exhibits of the IIHF Museum (the forerunner of the IIHF Hall of Fame), but even here the NHF did not tolerate competition from the small town.
The agreement between Kingston and the International Federation expired in 1997 and was not renewed. This is because at first the IIHF decided to create its own Hall of Fame in Zurich, but soon abandoned this idea, signing an agreement with the NHL.The IIHF Hall of Fame was transferred to Toronto (there are no other cities in Canada), where it now occupies a place in the “World Hockey” section of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Kingston was again left with nothing …
This is the backstory of the Hall. Starting from the next part, let’s move on to the personalities … And so that no one gets confused, let’s do this: on weekdays the project “To the Glory of the IIHF” will continue, on weekends – the “NHL Hall of Fame”. So happy reading!
