Virginia, 5V4 Munro Lacrosse Drill
It is awesome!
Lars Tiffany always – always delivers a great podcast with a ton of new lacrosse drills. His drills are definitely among the most popular on my site. In this case a new lacrosse drill that features incredible support for transition lacrosse teams, a few new twists, quick reps and Riding and Clearing fundamentals all in one…
At this point after 150 plus hours of podcasts with great NCAA lacrosse coaches I was close to thinking I had seen it all on transition drills. Until this podcast.
The drill is a full field drill with 5V4 at each end, with Goalies. Nothing new so far eh? However there are some awesome wrinkles in this version of the drill which Coach Tiffany credits Jamie Munro with sharing. However, Coach Tiffany got what he expected and was surprised that he got even more.
So we are 5V4 at one end and then 5V4 at the other end… we roll the ball out to one end of the field, and we go back and forth from one end to the other end, like a full field transition toggle drill.
Wrinkles
1. In this drill there is a strict ten second count down for the team with the five offensive players to get off a shot.
2. In this drill there is a strict ten-second count to get the ball cleared from one end to the other.
3. But, you are gonna love this, — the team clearing after the shot cannot cross the midfield line.
4. As we go back and forth in fast transition and pressure rides and clears, the groups are on the field for two minutes before substitutions and we play the next two minutes.
Please read through the article then you will want to listen to Coach Tiffany share this in his own words by clicking the Preview Box free for all members, or just click here…
So, once there is a shot, goal or a save, the clearing team only has ten seconds to clear the ball, but even with the goalie we are clearing 5V5, and heavy pressure. Thus somebody needs to cut or somebody needs to carry effectively. (Still not carrying across the midfield line) The ten-second clock is critical, if the time is close to running out we need a long pass to the other end, the drill does not stop.
What Coach Tiffany did not expect was how this lacrosse drill “morphs” into a full field pressure riding and clearing drill. And even if, as a coach you do not ride with pressure, at the end of the game if you need the ball, you may need to. This is a fun and fast way to get repetitions here.
And even if, as a coach, you do not run a ten-man ride, you might need to run a variation at the end of the game if you need the ball. At Virginia they experiment with the riding goalie coming out of the crease into coverage as you might in a tight pressure full field ride as well as leaving the four defenders to ride with pressure with the goalie in the cage.
If as a coach, you have no interest in a ten-man ride, chances are you will see it at some point in the season, thus having players move to get open in the clearing game, especially since we cannot carry the ball over the midfield line, again it is great exposure. But remember, nine and ten man pressure rides can create or dictate tempo for transition teams.
Variations,
If you have a U15 team, or smaller roster numbers you might try this drill with the cages moved just ten yards closer, or as a 3V2 on one or both ends.
I am looking forward to trying this one! Please leave your comments below! Or email me at [email protected]
A Lacrosse Weekend 4.18.20
Uncategorized Apr 18, 2020
Welcome to “A Lacrosse Weekend” my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, stories, myths, truths, about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you enjoy it!
Virtual Lacrosse Summit
What a week of learning! One of my favorite things to do is to continue to “Sharpen the Saw” and Q2 VLS once again did the trick.
Monday 4/13
Tom Mariano, Head Coach Pace University and MLL Bayhawks: I love Tommy’s Keep Away Drill Called the Rondo Drill, where there are two 10×10 boxes, one with a 4v2 and the other with a 5v2, where the offense tries to move the ball with in and between boxes. The 5v2 box opens up a great “Wall Pass” option. I love this drill!
Kelly Amonte-Hiller, Head Coach Northwestern: The Wildcats have made a phenomenal improvement in their shooting percentage over the past few years with a commitment to shot selection and working on shooting ON GOALIES! NU has three goalies on the roster and employs two men’s goalies from the club team as managers, which give the ‘Cats a chance to shoot on live goalies. Total game changer!
Jana Drummond, Associate Head Coach UMass: Jana’s presentation on 2v2 Defense was centered around defending 2man game. My big take away from this webinar was her emphasis on pressure! Specifically ball pressure and double teams. This attacking and dictating style of defense is fun and effective!
Colleen Magarity, Head Coach Penn Charter, Director HHH Lacrosse: Colleen is as good of a coach as you will find at any level. Her combination of expertise and her mindset is incredible. She inspires toughness while being fun, discipline and high expectations with empathy. The drills, skills and concepts in this webinar are a part-whole build up to running pressure man to man defense in women’s lacrosse.
Gerry Byrne, Head Coach Harvard: I am a self proclaimed disciple of Gerry Byrne and I use every opportunity to learn from him. Like a proud father, Gerry broke down defensive clips from the PLL Whipsnakes vs Redwoods championship game in which there were six of his former players: Matt Landis, Eddy Glazener, Garrett Epple, Jon Sexton, Sergio Perkovic and Jack Near.
Tuesday 4/14
Selena Lasota, Northwestern 2019 1st Team AA and Tewaaraton Finalist: I find Selena’s journey fascinating: growing up the daughter of a fisherman in a remote part of Vancouver Island, BC, Lasota learned lacrosse primarily in the backyard and playing boys box lacrosse. Her game shows it! The way she plays “Free” and with her backyard/box lacrosse instincts are quite apparent!
Kayla Treanor, Assistant Coach Boston College, Team USA: This webinar gives viewers an inside look at KT’s game! With a highlight video of some of Kayla’s all time great plays, she breaks down her though process, her techniques, and how she learned the game! I love KT’s combo of her KT split, her post ups, her fakes and the way she shoots around screens and behind the back.
Check out this video of the KT Split!
Dave Kotowski, Founder Team Elevate Lacrosse: Dave K was my college roommate and has become a leader in the world of girls lacrosse. It’s fascinating to hear his take on the effects of COVID-19 on college lacrosse recruiting.
Eddie Comeau, Head Coach Georgia Swarm: The ABC’s of Indoor Offense is the title of Eddies talk which is backed by an amazing reel of clips from Swarm games with the likes of Lyle Thompson, Miles Thompson, Randy Staats, Shane Jackson and Zack Miller. The simplicity of of box concepts is on display with these world class players. You will love the “Spin Seal!” Here’s an example!
Jamie Munro, JM3 Sports: The Penn State Offense is one of my favorite all time webinars! I love the way Jeff Tambroni has installed this offense and the way it has evolved.
Wednesday 4/15
JP Brazel, Defensive Coordinator and Goalie Coach, Stony Brook University: JP’s breakdown of “What went wrong” is a look at the goals allowed in a 11-10 overtime win versus Brown. The analysis of each play, what happened and what SBU could have done differently, as well as a goalie analysis is a fascinating way to learn lacrosse!
Tim McCormack, Head Coach Arizona State: Playing Free is the title of this presentation which was extremely powerful. A model for giving your team power to make decisions and the drills that build it up! You will love the Keep Away and “Three Square” games!
Andrew Baxter, Head Coach Fairfield University: AB’s presentation on Transition Offense and Defense was marvelous! Simple and smart with GREAT drills! “Finishing your cut” is a concept Coach Baxter emphasized which resonated with me big time! This is worth watching!
Jim Stagnitta, Head Coach PLL Whipsnakes: this presentation is a fascinating look at how to Coach “Capacity over Capability. ” Jim’s new leadership development company called Prodromos has created an amazing combination of theory and practicality. You will be able to implement specifics into your teams culture development plan and practices!
Kylie Ohlmiller, NCAA All-Time scoring leader, Team USA: This fascinating webinar is based on the eight athletes that most impacted Kylie’s mentality, her game, and provided her with inspiration: Kobe Bryant, Rob Pannell, Jen Adams, Steph Curry, Katrina Dowd, Mikey Powell, Abby Wambach and Michele Tumulo.
Kevin Corrigan, Head Coach Notre Dame: Kevin’s talk on Riding and Clearing is a masterpiece. I’m telling you this: nobody is better at the full field game of men’s lacrosse than KC. The way he teaches communication, basic principles, and the drills he uses are phenomenal. Here’s my breakdown of one of the drills KC discusses.
Thursday 4/16
Marie McCool, Team USA, 1st Team All-America North Carolina: this player breakdown is some of Marie’s best highlights combined with her personality and articulation of what she’s doing, why she’s doing it, and how she learned it! You will love the drills she provided from her dad filming her too! Here’s a sweet highlight video!
Justin Tuma, Defensive Coordinator High Point University: Justin’s topic was Adding Personality to your Defense in which he details how HPU uses pressure, double teams and zone to mix into their defense, which resulted in a few of the biggest wins in DI lacrosse!
John Galloway, Head Coach Jacksonville University: Coach Galloway took a deep dive into practice planning that was phenomenal! Learn how to create consistency, themes, and an identity for your team as well as how this type of disciplined planning will help you win games!
Steve Brundage, Offensive Coordinator Hobart College: Brundy’s talk on early offense was off the charts! It is so simple, yet so awesome! If you watched their Syracuse game, you will remember how fast and how smart they played! This is a must watch webinar! I love the way they Center the ball, hold their wings, exchange a midfielder with an attackman, and continue to attack from transition, through subbing and right into 6v6! Watch the highlights from the Hobart / Cuse game and you will see what he’s talking about!
Have a great weekend!

90,000 Subtle balance. Finding Balance Author: Julia SERKOVA
A bit of classic
Many novice riders only ride once or twice a week. This amount of practice is not enough to gain stability in the saddle. The theory that can be read in special literature (and not only in Russian) is certainly important, but it will not replace full-time training. But if, nevertheless, the lack of free time does not allow you to sit in the saddle often, you will have to look for ways out in independent training and developing balance without a horse. For riders who do not have the opportunity to practice regularly, practice at home is the best option. For this purpose, you can purchase a large gymnastic ball or fitball, which will help not only stay in shape, but also develop that very balance. You can sit on such a ball like on a horse, with your legs dangling to the sides with your knees forward. If the ball is too small, it can be placed on a pillow to increase its height.
Sitting astride the ball, spread your arms to the sides and raise your legs in turn, trying to keep your body as vertical as possible.Rotating the pelvis is also very helpful. Sit on the ball with your feet flat on the floor and your back straight. Turn the pelvis to the right, hold this position for five seconds, repeat the exercise, turning the pelvis to the left. Do the exercise ten times. To make it harder, put more weight on your legs. If this is too easy for you, try simple yoga asanas for balance (they can be easily downloaded from the Internet) or a set of balance exercises borrowed from ballet. Such activities are useful not only for adults, but also for children.A child who has practiced with a ball at home will easily transfer the acquired skills to the saddle.
Sat down, got up
Wall squats will help strengthen your quads and lower body muscles, and improve balance while riding. Stand in front of a wall with your knees bent, arms along your torso. With your back against the wall and slide down, continue bending your knees until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Hold this position at
ten seconds and repeat again.
Catch me if you can
One of the most popular balance exercises on horseback is the “catch the stirrups” challenge. Start at a walk – throw the right stirrup and after 3-4 steps catch it without looking down or leaning on the horse’s neck. Repeat with the left stirrup. Then try throwing and catching the stirrups at a trot and canter. Ensure that you can easily throw and catch the stirrups in any gait without changing the position of your arms and body.
Another way to improve your horse’s balance is to ride heavily shortened stirrups. Shorten the stirrups five holes and warm up normally. Shorter stirrups move the center of gravity higher and help improve balance and muscle control.
Don’t be lazy – stretch yourself!
Various riding stretches are also very helpful. It is best to practice this with a trainer on a calm horse. Sit in the saddle with your back straight and your knees slightly bent.Lean back slightly, straighten both legs and bring your left leg to the right side. Return to the starting position and repeat the same with the right leg. Similarly, you can
but make a full turn around its axis: move your left leg to the right side, then turn around to face the horse’s tail –
di, move your left foot to your right again and finally re-occupy
starting position by making a full 360-degree turn.
Our hands are not for boredom
Exercise with the hands also helps to find balance.Sit in the saddle with your back straight and extend your arms out to the sides parallel to the ground. Pivot to the right so that your left hand is in front and your right hand is behind. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat the same on the other side. Charging in the saddle takes a few minutes and doesn’t take up much of your valuable workout time. Exercises done at home will also not knock you out of your schedule. After all, all this is done for your early learning and achieving the greatest harmony in work with your four-legged partner. If you have trouble finding balance, do not be lazy, do the above exercises – and very soon you will feel that you have become much more confident in the saddle. ZM
90,000 Equestrian sport is … What is Equestrian sport?
One of the first filming of a galloping horse
Equestrian sport is a collective concept, which means sports games with the use of horses. When riding a horse, the rider actively interacts with the movement of the horse. The horse is controlled by moving the rider’s weight, squeezing the hips and loosening or pulling the reins. The rider’s voice can also influence the movement of the horse, but not all equestrian sports are allowed.
Equestrian sports
The Fédération Equestre Internationale FEI is officially recognized by the International Equestrian Federation (FR ):
Kinds of Show Events not included in the official FEI classification:
Contrary to popular belief, running and racing is not an equestrian sport, but a test of horses.
History
Equestrian sport was first included in the Summer Olympic Games in 1912. Athletes from 10 countries were represented at the V Olympiad in Stockholm: Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Russia, USA, France, Chile and Sweden. The Swedish equestrians won all three medals: gold, silver and bronze in dressage, the Nations Cup in obstacle course, first command place and gold in eventing. [1]
Criticism of equestrian sports
There is a point of view, the founder of which in Russia is Alexander Nevzorov, according to which equestrian sport is considered as a parasitism of a person on a horse [2] [ unauthorized source? ] , the rider’s use of her physical capabilities, not just her own. This point of view is shared by some radical environmental organizations [3] [ unauthorized source? ] .
These opinions have caused numerous controversies both on Internet forums and in print [4] and on television [5] [6] [7] [8] .
Ammunition
- The main element of ammunition for riding horses is the saddle.
- Bridle (headband) – a piece of ammunition that is worn on a horse’s head and allows you to control it.
- Boots are devices for protecting the limbs of a horse while working. Boots can protect both from mechanical damage (blows) and serve to support and protect the tendon-ligamentous apparatus. There are also stall legs designed for all sorts of medical procedures.
- Saddlecloth – a piece of ammunition made of quilted fabric. The pad is placed under the saddle to absorb sweat and protect the horse’s back from injury.
- The blanket is a blanket for a horse, which protects it from colds, flies (net blankets). They are divided into winter (made of wool, fleece, padding polyester, etc.) and summer (made of cotton, mesh and other lightweight materials). Large blankets have a hood for additional neck coverage.
- Girth – a wide, strong belt designed to hold the saddle (saddle for draft horses). Covers the horse’s body from below and attaches to the saddle from both sides. They are made of leather, braid and other materials. Some saddle types have 2-3 girths.
- A halter is a bridle without a bit, the purpose of which is to keep a horse on a leash.Refers to items of stable use and is made of leather, braid.
- Chumbur is a rope with which a horse is tied when it is in a halter. There are braid, chain or rope lashings.
- Hakamora is a type of iron (bit). The classic hakamora consists of two leather straps that go around the horse’s face. One, a portable strap, is most often trimmed with faux or natural fur, and the other, a chin strap, is most often made with a chain. On the sides of the muzzle, the straps are connected by a metal plate, to which the cheek straps of the bridle are attached. Levers go down from the plates, to which the reins are attached.
- Splint – an additional device for working with a horse. This is a long cord, which is rarely leather and is mainly made in the form of a nylon, canvas or other synthetic belt. The strap ends on both sides with special fasteners that allow you to form loops adjustable in length through which the saddle girth is passed. The lynch itself is passed in various ways from the girth, through the headband to the rider’s hands, forming a sliding lever (sliding rein), which enhances the effect on the horse, forcibly lowering its head. Riding with cords in competition is prohibited, but is very beneficial for some horses during training.
