In this case, if the penalized team doesn’t take a timeout to transfer goalie gear, the goalie may stay in the game (unless ejected). However, the player serving the penalty for the goalie will have a non-releasable penalty for double the length of the original penalty.
Goalie Warm-Up Rules
A team is entitled to a 1-minute goalie warm-up only if the goalie in the game must leave due to an injury or a penalty. This warm-up should be granted even if they need time to switch goalie gear. In any other situation, a timeout must be called to warm up a goalie.

Rule 7—Penalty Enforcement
Play-on for lower levels
The play-on can be used at any level of play. We do not teach it to Level 1 officials, because in U15 and under games the offended team is typically less likely to be disadvantaged by a quick whistle than at the high-school level.
If you know all of the rules and mechanics regarding play-on, you are free to use this at any level.
Keep in mind that, despite confusion among some players and coaches, a play-on is not the same thing as a flag down (which is used at all levels of boys lacrosse in Minnesota).
Restart locations
Any time-serving penalty in the defensive end should result in a free-clear (unless there were simultaneous fouls). For any other restart, the ball cannot start inside the attack area unless play was stopped for an end line out of bounds (shot, pass, player stepped out, loose ball rolls out).
Exception: On and end line shot out of bounds followed by a timeout, a dead-ball foul does not move the location of the restart to the alley.
The clearing team can restart with the ball inside the attack area, including restarting with possession in the crease, after a change of possession technical foul
A dead-ball timeout never changes the location of the restart. A live-ball time-out moves the ball to the alley if it was in the attack area but doesn’t otherwise change the location.
Basic penalty enforcement
A team may not play down more than 3 players at once due to penalty. Additional penalties “stack”: the fourth and subsequent players wait next to the table until there is space in the penalty area for them to serve. The 7 players on the field must obey the offside rule: no one can cross midfield in this situation.
One goal by Team A releases all releasable penalties being served by Team B (unlike hockey).
It does not, however, release the stacked penalties, the next one to three of which will begin serving when play restarts.
Technical foul wiped out by a goal
If there is a flag down for a technical foul and a goal is scored, the penalty is wiped out by the goal. However, if the flag is for a personal foul, the penalty is served even if a goal is scored. Personal fouls always result in penalty time being served unless the game ends before the foul can be enforced (although ejections and resulting suspensions are possible even after the final horn).
Two NR USC fouls
Situation: A1 uses profanity and gets a 1:00 NR USC. Later, A1 uses profanity again and gets a second USC, which given what he said would have been a 1:00 NR USC if he hadn’t already had one. Ruling: Since it’s his second NR USC, he doesn’t serve the 1:00 NR, he serves a 3:00 NR expulsion foul instead.
Thus the total time served for the second foul is 3:00 NR, not 1:00 + 3:00 = 4:00 NR.
Goalie penalties
Goalies serve their own penalties in lacrosse.
In running-time JV and Freshman (9/10) games, the officials may choose to allow the in-home to serve a penalty if there is no backup goalie, but only if the opposing coach agrees. It should be made clear to everyone that an exception is being made due to the running clock.
In 14U and lower games, the goalie will serve the penalty and the backup goalie will take his place. If there is no backup goalie immediately ready to step in (within 20 seconds of the penalty being reported) and if the penalized team chooses not to take a timeout in order to transfer goalie gear to another player, the goalie may stay in the game (as long as he has not been ejected) but the player who serves the penalty for the goalie will have serve a non-releasable penalty for double the length of the original penalty.
The original penalty time is still assessed to the goalie in the scorebook.
At the varsity level, a goalie getting a penalty must serve even if there is no backup. Since a legally-equipped goalie is mandatory, if there is no backup that means that the goalie must transfer his chest protector, throat protector, and crosse to another player. The officials should be reasonably lenient in allowing time for this transfer (but if the offending team wants to get their starting goalie back in the game they must call a timeout or wait until the end of the period to switch the gear back).
A team is entitled to a 1-minute goalie warm-up only if the goalie in the game must leave due to an injury or a penalty (in any other situation, a timeout must be called in order to warm up a goalie). This warm-up should be granted even if they need time to switch goalie gear.
Free clears
Free clears are awarded only in the following situations:
- When there is a time-serving penalty in the defensive end of the field.
- On goalie interference or a crease violation with possession in the crease.
Free clears are not awarded for other change-of-possession fouls, and they are no longer awarded for offside by the team in possession.
Bench USC fouls
A bench USC foul is charged to the individual responsible but is served by the in-home; the violator may not enter the game until the penalty expires even though he is not the one serving the penalty.
If two different coaches from the same team get USC fouls in the same game, no one is ejected from the game; this is different from the football rule.
Penalty time in running-time games
There is no more time-and-a-half for penalties in running-time games.
Post-game ejections
Players and coaches may be ejected after the final horn, with appropriate suspensions to be served, as long as the officials have not left the immediate playing facility (e.
g., the confines of a stadium). If they have left the immediate playing facility and there is an incident, it is not an ejection, but a report must be filed and disciplinary action will likely follow.
Penalties & Fouls
PENALTIES and FOULS
There are two different kinds of fouls in lacrosse: Personal and technical. Fouls and infractions are enforced by removal of the offending player from the field of play, and/or awarding possession to the opposing team.
A personal foul generally involves an infraction that has a malicious intent, such as slashing or unnecessary roughness. Personal fouls are punishable by penalties of one to three minutes in length. These fouls give the fouled team a “man-up” situation, where it has an extra player on the field, as well as possession of the ball at the beginning of the penalty.
Most penalties allow the offending player to be released from the penalty box if the opposing team scores a goal before the penalty time has expired.
However, some personal fouls carry an “non-releasable” penalty, where the offending player must serve the entirety of his penalty in the box, regardless of how many goals are scored.
Technical fouls by definition are fouls of a less serious nature and usually involve a moving or time violation, like an illegal screen, off-sides, or interference. They result in a 30-second penalty if the fouling team does not have possession of the ball at the time of the foul. If there was no possession or the fouling team had the ball when the foul was committed, then the ball is awarded to the team that was fouled.
Personal Fouls
Slashing: Occurs when a player’s stick viciously contacts an opponent in any area other than the stick or gloved hand on the stick.
Tripping: Occurs when a player obstructs his opponent at or below the waist with the crosse, hands, arms, feet or legs.
Cross Checking: Occurs when a player uses the handle of his crosse between his hands to make contact with an opponent.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Occurs when any player or coach commits an act which is considered unsportsmanlike by an official, including taunting, arguing, or obscene language or gestures.
Unnecessary Roughness: Occurs when a player strikes an opponent with his stick or body using excessive or violent force.
Illegal Crosse: Occurs when a player uses a crosse that does not conform to required specifications. A crosse may be found illegal if the pocket is too deep or if any other part of the crosse was altered to gain an advantage.
Illegal Body Checking: Occurs when any of the following actions takes place: (a) body checking an opponent who is not in possession of the ball or within five yards (or three yard at the youth level) of a loose ball; (b) avoidable body check of an opponent after he has passed or shot the ball; (c) body checking an opponent from the rear or at or below the waist; and (d) body checking an opponent above the shoulders.
A body check must be below the shoulders and above the waist, and both hands of the player applying the body check must remain in contact with his crosse.
Illegal Gloves: Occurs when a player uses gloves that do not conform to required specifications. A glove will be found illegal if the fingers and palms are cut out of the gloves, or if the glove has been altered in a way that compromises its protective features.
Technical Fouls
Holding: Occurs when a player impedes the movement of an opponent or an opponent’s crosse.
Interference: Occurs when a player interferes in any manner with the free movement of an opponent, except when that opponent has possession of the ball, the ball is in flight and within five yards of the player, or both players are within five yards of a loose ball.
Off-sides: Occurs when a team does not have at least four players on its defensive side of the midfield line or at least three players on its offensive side of the midfield line.
Pushing: Occurs when a player thrusts or shoves a player from behind.
Screening: Occurs when an offensive player moves into and makes contact with a defensive player with the purpose of blocking him from the man he is defending.
Stalling: Occurs when a team intentionally holds the ball, without conducting normal offensive play, with the intent of running time off the clock.
Warding Off: Occurs when a player in possession of the ball uses his free hand or arm to hold, push or control the direction of an opponent’s stick check.
Box Lacrosse Rules
Clearing and Off-Sides
You have 10 seconds to clear midline. Once the offensive team clears the midline there is NO returning back behind the midline with the ball. This rule is just like basketball. If the offensive team loses the ball in the defensive zone it is live until that team touches the ball.
Defensive players can play that ball.
Face-Offs
All players who are NOT facing off stand behind the restraining line. The ball is live after the whistle.
Shot Clock
We play a 30-second Shot Clock. In BB Sportsplex there are no shot clocks so referees use a 30-second timer with an audible buzzer. It works very well.
Fighting and Boarding
ZERO TOLERANCE!
Any instigation of fighting will result in a season suspension from the game, league, and tournament. Leaving the bench to enter altercation will also result in an in-season suspension.
Boarding
Boarding is any attempt to body check or propel a player with or without the ball into the boards. Boarding is considered any check of this manner within 5 feet of the boards.
Boarding Penalty Guidelines individual player per game.
1st infraction will result in a 2-minute releasable penalty.
Depending on the severity of the boarding it could result
in a game ejection.
2nd Infraction of the same player will result in ejection and or season-ending suspension if sever enough.
3rd Infraction will result in a season-ending suspension.
**Loose Ball Exception Around Boards** Players CAN play the ball within 5 feet of the boards during a loose ball. The Player may not use excessive force to bump, hit, press, or pin the player during this loose ball situation.
Picks / Screens
Picks and screens are allowed in Box lacrosse as they are in outdoor lacrosse. The only difference in
Box is that you can shuffle your feet to block players getting by AFTER you set your feet initially. Picks/Screens cannot be set to the back or blindside ever.
Substitutions
All subbing is on the fly and through the sub box. Once you touch the wall or net with a stick your teammate can jump out the other door.
You can sub after fouls and goals as well. You must sub through designated doors.
Sportsmanship
Exemplary sportsmanship is required by all players and parents participating in the CBLL. Please remember we are all playing this game to have fun, get better, compete, and get ready for a successful spring season. Please support the directors, referees, and coaches in promoting only good hard, and fair play.

Checking:
1. Cross-checking (checking with your stick between the hands) is legal UNLESS it is done a) with excessive force, or b) against a player NOT carrying the ball. It must be between the hips and shoulders ONLY.
2. Slashing is striking the opposing player in the usual illegal areas (head, neck, leg, back, crotch).
3. High Sticking is raising your stick above the shoulder of the opponent.Over-the-headchecking and pencil checking are illegal in box lax.
4. All checking fouls will be called as major or minor ouls, depending on severity.
A minor or major penalty shall be assessed to a player/goalkeeper who while in the process of shooting or passing, follows through with the stick and slashes an opponent. Should a goal be scored on the shot, the goal shall be awarded and the penalty assessed. Unintentionally striking an opponent who is moving into the range of the follow-through of a shot or pass should not be penalized.
Warding:
1. Warding, the act of pushing the defenseman’s stick out of your way, is legal in box lacrosse. However, if the offensive player grasps the defender’s stick or body, this is a (technical) foul called a player control foul.
2. Grasping an opponent’s stick while the ball is loose is a player control foul. Player control rules apply during face-offs.
Charging:
1. While a pick setter is allowed to move his feet after setting a pick, interfering with a defensive player without first setting the feet is a penalty.
Interference (technical foul) or charging (minor foul) are called, depending on the severity of the infraction.
2. Offensive charging is called against an offensive player using his head to butt or attack his defender.
CHECK FROM BEHIND

A major penalty or match penalty shall be assessed to a player/goalkeeper who at the discretion of the referee, based on the degree of violence of the impact, shall be assessed to any player who intentionally pushes, body-checks, illegally cross-checks, or hits an opposing player from behind anywhere on the floor.

Where a player is high sticked, cross-checked, body-checked, pushed in any manner from behind into the boards or goal net, in such a way that the player is unable to protect or defend him/herself, a Match penalty shall be assessed.
NOTE: A check from Behind is defined: intentionally pushes, body-checks, illegally cross-checks, or hits an opposing player from behind anywhere on the floor; the intensity of impact affects only the type of penalty assessed.
The Crease:
1. Offensive players may not be in the crease at the same time that the ball is in the crease. Offensive players may pass through the crease or maybe in the crease following the scoring of a goal or dive. 2. Offensive players may not interfere with the goalie at any time including when the goalie is out of the crease. Diving (launching into the crease and shooting while airborne) is legal UNLESS contact is made with the goalie.
3. The goalie may be stick-checked when carrying the ball out of the crease, but may not be a body- checked at any time.
4. The goalie may not check offensive players at any time.
Boarding:
1. No contact is allowed within 5 feet of the boards. Pushing (minor foul) or Boarding (major foul) will be called, depending on the severity.
2. Hitting a player from behind and propelling them into the boards is EXTREMELY dangerous, a major misconduct foul, resulting in a 10:00 penalty and ejection.
No exceptions.
INTERFERENCE ON LOOSE BALLS
This is a safety issue and must be enforced, players are very vulnerable when they are attempting to pick up a loose ball and they must be protected.
1. When the ball is loose, all players must play only the ball. Never can there be any bodily interference with a player attempting to pick up the ball. The severity of the interference will determine the penalization. Less severe would be a possession call. A ‘take out’ hit would be a minor or a major penalty, and finally a Match penalty can be assessed for hits that are determined to be an Attempt to Injure.
OFF-BALL CONTACT

When an opposing player is in the offensive zone the defender may apply equal pressure through a cross-check pushing the player anywhere in the offensive zone.

The offensive team must have possession of the ball in order to engage in off-ball contact.

The offensive player must be in the offensive zone or an interference call shall be assessed.

Offensive players cannot cross-check back in retaliation or an interference call shall be assessed.
Unnecessary Roughness:
1. Unnecessary roughness can be called for any unsafe play or conduct, resulting in minor, major, or major misconduct penalties.

Lacrosse 101 | CDM Lacrosse
A high school game is forty-eight minutes, consisting of four twelve-minute quarters.
In the event of a tie, the teams play sudden death overtime.
10 players play at a time; 1 goalie, 3 defensemen, 3 midfielders, and 3 attackmen.
Each team must retain 3 players in its offensive half of the field and 4 players in the defensive half of the field at all times. Failure to do so results in a technical foul off-sides penalty.
Play begins with a “face-off” at midfield. After a goal, play resumes with a face-off.
A player who touches or goes beyond the sideline or endline or causes the ball to do the same (last player to touch the ball) is considered out of bounds. Possession is awarded to the other team.
On a missed shot, possession is awarded to the player closest to the ball at the time it goes out of bounds.
Personal Foul penalties (slashing, tripping, blows to the head, late hit, unnecessary roughness, illegal stick, etc.) are always time-serving (1:00-3:00). Much like hockey, time serving penalties are served by the offending player in the penalty area of the substitution box, thus giving the offended team an extra man advantage called “EMO” or a “man-up” opportunity. Unless the penalty is a “non-releasable” penalty (unsportsmanlike conduct, illegal stick, or illegal contact to the head), the penalty is released if the offended team scores a goal.
Techincal Foul penalties (off-sides, crease violation, illegal procedure, pushing, etc.
) are change of possession fouls unless the team that is fouled has possession, in which case they are time serving (:30) and the rules governing their release are the same as with personal fouls.
The Areas of The Lacrosse Field
“X” – refers to the area directly behind the goal crease. Most offenses, both settled and unsettled, are initiated through “X”.
“The Box” – refers to two places on the lacrosse field – the first is the area delineated by the restraining line (side to side) and the two lines running from the restraining line to the endline. Offensive and defensive players must remain in the box during a face-off until one of the midfielders participating in the face-off gains possession or the ball enters the box area. In the last two minutes of a game, the winning team, or both teams if the game is tied, must keep the ball inside of their offensive box once it enters that area, or the result is a turnover.
The second “box” is the substitution area at midfield.
Similar to ice hockey, teams may substitute players through the box while the ball is in play – one player comes off, one player goes on. These substitutions must occur on the proper side of midfield to avoid going offsides.
“The Crease” – technically, it is the 9’ radius around the goal, but it also refers to the area directly in front of the goal. Offenses typically have at least one player “on the crease” at all times – similar to having a player in the lane in basketball.
“The Hole” – a defensive term for the area in front of the goal (crease area). Coaches will often yell to their players to “get in the hole” in unsettled defensive situations.
“Down the Side” – refers to a fundamental strategy in the transition game and unsettled situations in which the team going from defense to offense pushes the ball “down the side” to an attackman on the wing, who then distributes it to a second attackman at “X”.
Some Common Lacrosse Terms
Attack or Attackmen – the 3 offensive specialist that operate around the goal at the offensive end of the field.
Middie or Midfielders – the 3 players who operate primarily in the center portion of the field, playing both offense and defense.
Defense, Close Defense or Defensemen – the 3 players who work in coordination with the goalie to prevent the opposition from scoring.
Long Pole – refers to a midfielder who is a defensive specialist and plays with a longer stick. The rules allow only 4 long sticks to be on the field at one time.
Face-Off Man – usually midfielder who specializes in the face-off
Chasing the Shot – after a shot, the closest player (team) to the ball, when it goes out, is awarded possession. Thus, players will “chase a shot” to the point where it goes out of bounds.
Check-Up – a defensive term which means for all of the players on defense to find a player to defend (man to man).
Clearing – the running or passing of the ball from the defensive half of the field to the offensive.
Cradling – The rhythmical coordinated motion of the arms and wrists that enables a player to keep the ball secure in his stick and ready to be passed or shot..jpg)
Extra-Man or Man Up – A one-man offensive advantage (at least) that occurs following a time-serving penalty – usually 6 on 5.
Fast Break – a transition scoring opportunity in which the offense enjoys at least a one-man advantage – usually a 4 on 3.
Feeding – passing the ball to a teammate who is in a position to shoot.
Goal Line Extended or “GLE” – the imaginary line from the goal line to the sideline
Ground Ball – A loose ball anywhere on the playing field
Man-Down – the defensive situation that arises from a time-serving penalty against a team in which their defense is in at least a one-man disadvantage – usually 6 on 5.
Riding – The act of attempting to prevent a team from clearing the ball.
Slide – A move by a defender to give support to a teammate who has been beaten by his man.
Slow Break – refers to an unsettled offensive situation in which the offense has at least a one-man advantage, but the advantage is not as obvious as a “fast break.
” In a slow break situation, the offense tries to get the ball to a player at “X” and find the open man.
The Dimensions Of A Lacrosse Field
A lacrosse field is 110 yards long and 6o yards wide. The goal is 6′ x 6′ and sits inside of a protective goalie area or “crease” which measures 9′ in diameter. The goal is 15 yards from the endline. The offensive area is designated by a “restraining line” which is 20 yards from the mouth of the goal and 35 yards above the endline. There are two side restraining lines ten yards from each sideline.

Game Conditions
1. A minimum of two nights rest between contests.
2. The maximum number of contests shall be 10.
3. Time Interval: Unless extenuating circumstances arise, it is
recommended that no more than two contests should be scheduled per week.
There shall not be more than three contests played per calendar week. Contests may be played with only one night rest three times per season
for rescheduling purposes only.
Equipment
1. All players, including the goalkeeper shall
wear all protective equipment, including arm pads.
2. Properly fitted equipment of good quality is
mandatory for safe participation in lacrosse.
3. All balls must be NOCSAE approved and stamped. The essential protective equipment must
include a lacrosse helmet with a face mask (NOCSAE approved), lacrosse arm guards, lacrosse
shoulder pads, lacrosse gloves, and a mouthpiece. The goalkeeper must wear
a chest protector and throat protector.
4. Only sneakers or shoes with molded soles and
molded cleats are permitted in the modified program. Shoes with metal posts or
spikes are not permitted in any modified sport.
5. Face masks for lacrosse competition must have
a center bar.
6. With the exception of the goalkeeper’s stick,
there shall be no rule restriction on the length of the stick in modified
lacrosse providing the stick falls between 40-72 inches.
7. Modified lacrosse players are exempt from the
uniform outer clothing and helmet color regulations.
8. No tape on throats of face off sticks.
9. Eye shade – 1 solid stroke, no words,
numbers, logos, etc.
Game Rules
1. The length of quarters shall be nine minutes.
2. A team shall be permitted 3 time out periods per half. The time
outs cannot be accrued in the course of the game.
3. A one-arm swing with a stick, whether contact is made or not, shall be
considered a personal foul–slashing. This includes the over-the-head check.
4. There is no such call as a “Brush” in the modified program.
Contact between stick and helmet is a personal foul.
5. There is no ten (10) second count used
to get into attack-goal area.
The official’s judgment is to be used.
5. Contact with the ball is not allowed by any offensive players when the ball
is loose in the crease.
6. Body checking is allowed only against a player who is in possession of
the ball.
7. The 10 second rule is eliminated. There will be no time counts
for advancing the ball.
8. Substitutes are permitted whenever the ball goes out of bounds.
A horn will be used to substitute players when the ball goes out of bounds.
9. If a goalkeeper is given a penalty; he may remain in the game and the
in-home shall serve the penalty.
10. Modified lacrosse players will be exempt from color requirements for
sweatpants (NFHS 2003) and helmets (NFHS 2004)
11. Two overtime periods of two minutes are to be played in the event the
game is a tie; and no sudden victory period is to be allowed.
12. Offside revisions – counting forward
concerned with the half field situation.
13. Body checks to a player in a
defenseless position – minimum of 2 minute, non-releasable penalty.
14. Hits to head/neck area – minimum of 2
minute, non-releasable penalty.
15. During last 2 minutes of game, 2nd
penalty on defense team with offense in the box results in a whistle, stop play,
enforce penalties and restart as required.
16. No free clear on offside, lay the
ball down where it is when whistle blown. Pick it up and clear it from
there.
Section XI Rules
B Level Program – Five Period Format
The five period format is mandated for all B level teams in boys lacrosse except
for those teams which have opted to be scheduled in regulation contest devices. The
extra quarter format for extra participation is not an option for the B level
program in Section XI.
Following are the conditions of this program:
1. Only B level teams may participate.
2. Teams shall be divided into two squads of equal numbers and UNEQUAL ability.
3. Coaches must exchange rosters prior to every contest.
4. One squad will play the first and third periods and the other squad
will play the second and fourth periods. All players are eligible for the
fifth period.
5. All points scored count.
6. Teams having the minimum number of 26 players are obligated to play
five periods (unless on austerity) provided their opponents also meet the
minimum number requirements.
7. If teams have fewer than 26 players but still can field two full teams,
those teams may opt to play five periods. (If substitutes are used, note #8.)
8. No player may play in more than three periods of a five period contest.
9. There is no half-time when five periods are played.
10. Mercy rule: The clock will go to running time in the beginning
of the fourth period if one of the teams is ahead by 10 goals or more.
The
clock will stop on all whistles when the differential goes below 10 goals.
11. Extra compensation forms presented by the officials must be signed by the
home coach.
12. Each coach is requested to make a notation on the rating card verifying the
extra compensation for the officials.
13. All lacrosse teams must utilize the
A/B format. If there are not sufficient numbers to play 5 periods, teams
will still use the A/B format but may play 4 periods.
B Level Program – Four Quarters/Regulation Contest
When austerity or insufficient numbers of players dictate that five periods
cannot be played at the B level, the following conditions are applicable:
1. The five period format does not have to be utilized.
2. There is a halftime.
3. Extra quarters may not be played.
4. Mercy rule: See #10 above.

Rules of Lacrosse (Cambridge Minor Lacrosse)
*The number 1 rule is to have FUN !
*Although Lacrosse is very complementary to hockey its tactics are more similar to basketball. The main similarities and differences are as follows:
*Like basketball and unlike hockey to some degree the game of Lacrosse involves a full team offence. There are no defencemen in Lacrosse!
*Like basketball, there is no off-side nor icing! This keeps the pace of the game moving very quickly!
*There is a goalie and five players. The players are referred to as left crease, left corner, right crease, right corner and point.
*The goalie in Lacrosse can function just like any other player (remember, there is no blue line for offside purposes and a goalie can go anywhere on the floor).
*A big difference between hockey and Lacrosse involves the goalie’s crease. If a player on the offensive team has the ball and steps into the defensive team’s crease to shoot or cut through it, there is a change-in-possession.
*No player from outside the crease may reach into the crease and gain possession of the ball or, for that matter, interfere with the goalie gaining possession of the ball in the crease.
*A defensive player may step in the crease to gain possession of the ball in the crease and then run with the ball out of the crease but cannot then step back into the crease.
*If an offensive player goes through the other team’s crease to make a check or touches the goalie while they are in their crease it results in a penalty. If an offensive player is pushed into the crease there is no penalty and the play continues. However the player must make every effort to get out of the crease immediately.
*If a player shoots or bounces the ball into the stands, the other team is given possession. A whistle restarts the play.
*If 2 players are going after a “loose” ball they must play the ball and not check the opposing player until they have possession. If a check occurs before possession, then the checked player is awarded possession.
*There is always a face-off after a goal, penalty or when the ball strikes the goalie in the helmet area, (a goal is counted if the ball goes directly into the net off the goalie’s helmet or facemask).
*Face-offs are taken with the open face of the stick facing your own net. The ball must come out of the 2′ centre face-off circle before the other players can enter the larger circle. An offence against this does not cause another face-off as in hockey, it results in immediate possession to the other team.
*Checking is an important part of the game but checking from behind and violent checks into the boards will be strictly enforced. Checking from behind will be dealt with severely as it is one of the leading potential injury factors. It is a “judgement” call by the referee and is enforced differently at Rep levels. Ejection can be called in extreme cases.
*High sticking can be an area of confusion. “Incidental” contact with the helmet by an opposing player’s stick is not automatically a penalty. It is a referee’s judgement call.
*Cross-checking in Lacrosse is both legal and a very important and proper method of checking! Cross- Checking from behind is not tolerated. However, if a player ducks into a players crosscheck, no matter how severe that check is, it is not a penalty unless it is from behind! Again, the only way to enforce cross-checking from behind is the referees’ judgement.
*A player with the ball cannot push off with his free hand or arm! If they do, possession is immediately awarded to the other team. Many times spectators will not notice the free hand or arm pushing (as long as the player with the ball keeps both hands on their stick they may push or shoulder to resist the checker) and will often miss the checking by offensive players especially when the action is away from the ball.
*Remember as well, you can check an offensive player, whether he has the ball or not but this can only be done in the “D”, which is the normally dotted line in the defensive zone! However, if you are on the offensive team you must take the checking without responding! Any response or checking by any member of the team who has possession will result in loss of possession.
*Players or goalies out of their crease, will be penalized if they catch the ball in the hand. If they just contact it with the hand it is possession to the other team.
*The ball may be kicked, but not for a goal. Also if the ball is stuck in a stick the referee will help free it and the play shall continue.
*When a team is short-handed, they have 10 seconds to get the ball over the center and once it is over it cannot go back, or change of possession occurs. When a player is awarded possession by the referee they must be given at least 9 feet of room by the defending players until the whistle signifies the start of play.
*When defending your own net you can only pass the ball back to your own crease area once each possession. Your goalie or player has 5 seconds to get the ball out of the crease after stopping and gaining control of it; they must have both feet out to be considered out and once out, they or any other player cannot go back in or through! You can pass to the goalie as much as you want if they are out of the crease.

After GAIS “Torpedo” went to the Spanish “Sevilla”, for which the 33-year-old ex-goalkeeper of the USSR national team Rinat Dasaev played.True, the veteran’s business at that time was not going well in the Pyrenees – he lost the status of the first number and did not even get into the applications for games as a substitute. But Sevilla brought him to Moscow for the first match at their own expense, realizing how important it is to the goalkeeper psychologically. Dasaev was put in the press box in the East – at the junction of the fourth and fifth sectors of the Western Stand. The fight itself turned into one of the brightest victories won by the “auto plants” in the entire history of performances in European club tournaments.Moreover, the black and white achieved it in a dramatic struggle, playing in the minority.
But even without Dasaev, two years earlier recognized as the best goalkeeper in the world, there were enough masters in the Spanish club. For the Sevillians, in particular, were the best scorer in the history of the Austrian national team, Tony Polster, the striker of the Uruguayan national team Pablo Bengoechea, and several players of the Spanish national team. The guests flew to Moscow after two major victories in the Spanish championship, where they were second at that time, two points behind Barcelona and the same number of points ahead of Real Madrid.

But it was not there! To the incessant screams from the stands “Torpedo”, we are with you! ” ten men black and white pushed the opponent to his goal, and six minutes before the end of the match, substitute Alexander Kuzmichyov, watching for the mistake of an opponent throwing the ball from an out-of-bounds, dribbled literally on the line of Sevilla’s goalkeeper square, where he was knocked down in panic by the defenders.Second penalty!
It was striking that none of the torpedo men dared to execute the blow. The main penalty-taker Sergei Agashkov had already failed, the second-ranked 11-meter kicker Gennady Grishin was replaced by Alexander Kuzmichyov. The prolonged pause was interrupted by Sergei Zhukov, who was playing for the defensive midfielder. He ran into the penalty area of ”Sevilla” from the central circle, took the ball in his hands, set it on the “spot”, ran away and, without any frills, shot hard into the bottom corner.2: 1!
“Actually, I have always had a firm, decisive character, but I really didn’t hit a penalty,” Sergei Nikolaevich recalled eight years later in an interview with the Football weekly. – Then, in the fall of 1990, in the match with the Spaniards in the first half, Sergei Agashkov did not convert the penalty. And when the second penalty was assigned to the Sevilla goal, everyone stood in indecision. This result, achieved in such a difficult game, was already worthy of respect. However, the torpedo continued to attack. A minute before the final whistle, the referee appointed a free kick to Sevilla’s goal. The distance was impressive. Meters under 30. But a mighty blow by Oleg Shirinbekov followed, the ball flew along some absolutely incredible trajectory, “jerking” now to the left, then to the right, the goalkeeper of the guests Unsue got nervous and made a mistake: the ball ricocheted from his arms outstretched in front of him into the upper corner ! 3: 1.
However, there was still a return game in Spain. The environment at the Ramon Sánchez Pizjuan stadium was like a disturbed beehive. This was first felt by the 80 Torpedo fans who made it to Seville. Of course, this trip was organized by the ZiL club and plant.

Black-and-white, despite the desire of opponents to attack with large forces, at the first opportunity calculatedly and boldly went forward. Doubts about the successful outcome of the two-round meeting arose only in the middle of the second half, when Sevilla scored the second goal through the efforts of Ramon Vasquez Garcia, and two minutes later also gained an advantage of one player.According to the referee from Italy Pierluigi Magni, Oleg Shirinbekov played rough twice.
– I have not met such a biased refereeing even in the first league, when I played in Pamir, – the Torpedo midfielder lamented later. – And if in the first half my tackle could still be regarded as a game violation, but without a warning, in the second the Spaniard fought for the ball just like me, going forward. But the judge did not punish him, but removed me.
After this annoying episode, there seemed to be no chance of survival. After all, before that Shirinbekov tightly turned off the captain of “Sevilla” Jose Antonio Salguero from the game, and now his hands were free.
