What are the key responsibilities of lacrosse midfielders. How can midfielders improve their performance through targeted workouts. What are the different types of lacrosse midfielders and their roles on the field.
Understanding the Role of Lacrosse Midfielders
Lacrosse midfielders are often considered the most versatile players on the field. They play a crucial role in both offensive and defensive strategies, requiring a unique set of skills and physical attributes. Midfielders must possess exceptional stamina, speed, and agility to effectively transition between offense and defense throughout the game.
Key Responsibilities of Lacrosse Midfielders
- Transitioning between offense and defense
- Supporting both attacking and defensive plays
- Controlling the midfield area
- Participating in face-offs
- Creating scoring opportunities
- Intercepting passes and disrupting opponent’s plays
Are midfielders required to play the entire field? While midfielders are expected to contribute to both offense and defense, they are not always required to play the full length of the field. Some specialized midfielders focus primarily on specific aspects of the game, such as face-offs or defensive play.
Types of Lacrosse Midfielders
The composition and roles of midfielders can vary between men’s and women’s lacrosse. Understanding these differences is crucial for players, coaches, and fans alike.
Men’s Lacrosse Midfielders
In men’s lacrosse, there are typically three midfielders on the field at any given time. However, several specialized roles exist within the midfielder position:
- Two-Way Midfielder: These players excel in both offensive and defensive play, often crossing the restraining line to contribute in both halves of the field.
- FOGO (Face-Off Get Off): Specialists who focus primarily on winning face-offs and gaining possession for their team.
- Defensive Midfielder: These players prioritize defensive responsibilities, often marking opposing attackers and supporting the defense.
- Offensive Midfielder: Focused on creating scoring opportunities and supporting the attack.
- Winger: Positioned near the sidelines during face-offs to gain possession of loose balls.
Women’s Lacrosse Midfielders
Women’s lacrosse features a different midfield structure, with five midfielders on the field:
- 2 Defensive Midfielders
- 2 Attacking Midfielders
- 1 Center Midfielder
This configuration allows for more specialized roles within the midfield, with players focusing on either offensive or defensive responsibilities. The center midfielder often serves as a link between the two, contributing to both aspects of play.
Essential Lacrosse Workouts for Midfielders
To excel in the demanding role of a lacrosse midfielder, players must engage in targeted workouts that enhance their overall performance. These workouts should focus on improving endurance, speed, agility, and strength.
Field Practice Drills
How can midfielders simulate game-like conditions during practice? One of the most effective ways to prepare for real game scenarios is to conduct full-gear practice sessions on the field. This approach offers several benefits:
- Realistic simulation of game conditions
- Opportunity to practice transitions between offense and defense
- Improvement of ball handling skills while in motion
- Enhancement of shooting accuracy under pressure
- Development of field awareness and positioning
During these sessions, midfielders should focus on running realistic plays, practicing dodges, and working on both offensive and defensive techniques. This comprehensive approach helps players identify their strengths and weaknesses, allowing for more targeted improvement.
Crawling Exercises
Why is crawling beneficial for lacrosse players? Crawling exercises, particularly bear crawls, offer unique benefits that directly translate to improved performance on the field:
- Enhanced coordination and body control
- Improved strength in shoulders and hips
- Increased motor control and flexibility
- Development of core strength and stability
To incorporate bear crawls into your workout routine, start with short distances (10-15 yards) and gradually increase as your strength and endurance improve. Focus on maintaining proper form throughout the exercise, keeping your back flat and core engaged.
Sprint Training for Lacrosse Midfielders
Sprint training is crucial for midfielders who need to quickly transition between offense and defense. Incorporating various sprint drills can significantly improve a player’s speed, agility, and endurance.
Cone Drills for Agility and Direction Changes
Cone drills are excellent for improving a midfielder’s ability to change direction quickly and maintain speed while doing so. Here are some effective cone drills:
- T-Shape Cone Drill: Set up four cones in a T-shape, with 10 yards between each cone. Sprint from the base to the middle cone, then to the right cone, left cone, and back to the base.
- S-Shape Cone Drill: Arrange five cones in an S-shape, approximately 10 yards apart. Run through the pattern, touching each cone.
- L-Shape Cone Drill: Place three cones in an L-shape, 10 yards apart. Start with hands on the ground outside one cone, then sprint to touch each cone in the L-shape.
How often should midfielders incorporate these drills into their training? Aim to include cone drills in your workout routine at least 2-3 times per week, focusing on maintaining proper form and gradually increasing speed as you become more comfortable with the patterns.
Interval Sprints for Endurance and Recovery
Interval sprints are crucial for developing the ability to recover quickly after intense bursts of speed. A common interval sprint drill for lacrosse players involves:
- Running a 100-yard sprint every minute
- Starting at one end of the field and sprinting to the other
- Using a stopwatch to track pace and improvement
- Completing at least 10 repetitions per session
This drill helps midfielders build the stamina needed to maintain high-intensity play throughout the game, even after multiple sprints up and down the field.
Circuit Training for Lacrosse Midfielders
Circuit training is an excellent way for midfielders to develop overall strength, speed, and balance. These workouts target multiple muscle groups and improve both intramuscular and intermuscular coordination.
Core Circuit Exercises
A strong core is essential for lacrosse players, providing stability and power for all on-field movements. Include these exercises in your circuit training:
- Pushups
- Squats
- Side shuffles
- Planks
- Lateral hops
How many repetitions should be performed for each exercise? Aim for 12-15 repetitions of each exercise, or perform each for 30 seconds before moving to the next. Complete the circuit 3-4 times with minimal rest between exercises to maximize cardiovascular benefits.
Explosive Power Exercises
To develop the explosive power needed for quick accelerations and changes of direction, incorporate these exercises into your routine:
- Medicine ball throws
- Olympic lifts (e.g., power cleans, snatches)
- Plyometric exercises (e.g., box jumps, depth jumps)
These exercises engage multiple joints and muscle groups, promoting the development of quick, powerful movements essential for lacrosse midfielders.
Single-Leg Strength Exercises
Why are single-leg exercises important for lacrosse players? Single-leg strength exercises help improve balance, stability, and unilateral power, which are crucial for the asymmetrical movements often required in lacrosse. Include these exercises in your workout:
- Single-leg Romanian deadlifts
- Step-ups with knee drive
- Bulgarian split squats
- Single-leg box jumps
Aim to perform 8-12 repetitions on each leg, focusing on maintaining proper form and balance throughout the movement.
Water-Based Recovery Drills for Lacrosse Midfielders
Water-based drills can serve as an excellent form of active recovery for lacrosse midfielders, helping to alleviate muscle fatigue and promote healing after intense training sessions or games.
Benefits of Aquatic Training
- Reduced impact on joints and muscles
- Increased resistance for strength building
- Improved circulation and recovery
- Enhanced flexibility and range of motion
What types of water-based exercises are most beneficial for lacrosse players? Consider incorporating these aquatic drills into your recovery routine:
- Water jogging: Simulate running motions in deep water, using a flotation belt if necessary.
- Aqua sprints: Perform short, high-intensity bursts of movement in the water.
- Lateral movements: Practice side-to-side motions to improve hip mobility and strengthen stabilizing muscles.
- Treading water: Engage your core and improve overall endurance by treading water for extended periods.
Aim to spend 20-30 minutes performing these exercises, focusing on maintaining proper form and engaging the same muscle groups used in lacrosse-specific movements.
Nutrition and Recovery for Lacrosse Midfielders
Proper nutrition and recovery practices are essential for lacrosse midfielders to maintain peak performance throughout the season. A well-balanced diet and effective recovery strategies can significantly impact a player’s endurance, strength, and overall health.
Nutritional Considerations for Lacrosse Players
What should lacrosse midfielders eat to fuel their performance? Focus on consuming a balanced diet that includes:
- Complex carbohydrates for sustained energy (e.g., whole grains, fruits, vegetables)
- Lean proteins for muscle repair and growth (e.g., chicken, fish, lean beef, legumes)
- Healthy fats for hormone production and joint health (e.g., avocados, nuts, olive oil)
- Adequate hydration before, during, and after training and games
Timing of meals is also crucial. Consume a balanced meal containing carbohydrates and protein 2-3 hours before exercise, and refuel with a similar combination within 30 minutes after intense activity to promote recovery.
Recovery Strategies for Optimal Performance
Implementing effective recovery strategies can help midfielders maintain consistency in their performance and reduce the risk of injury. Consider incorporating these recovery techniques into your routine:
- Proper cool-down and stretching after training and games
- Use of foam rollers or massage tools for myofascial release
- Ice baths or contrast therapy to reduce inflammation
- Adequate sleep (7-9 hours per night) for physical and mental recovery
- Active recovery sessions, such as light jogging or swimming, on rest days
How often should lacrosse players engage in dedicated recovery sessions? Aim to incorporate some form of recovery activity daily, with more intensive recovery practices (such as massage or ice baths) performed 2-3 times per week or after particularly demanding training sessions or games.
Mental Preparation for Lacrosse Midfielders
The mental aspect of lacrosse is often overlooked but can be a significant factor in a midfielder’s performance. Developing mental toughness and employing psychological strategies can give players an edge on the field.
Visualization Techniques
Visualization is a powerful tool that can help midfielders improve their performance and decision-making skills. To practice visualization:
- Find a quiet, comfortable space
- Close your eyes and imagine yourself on the lacrosse field
- Visualize successful plays, transitions, and interactions with teammates
- Engage all your senses in the visualization (sight, sound, touch, smell)
- Practice visualizing for 5-10 minutes daily
Why is visualization effective for lacrosse players? Visualization helps create neural pathways in the brain, similar to physical practice. This mental rehearsal can lead to improved performance and confidence on the field.
Mindfulness and Focus Training
Developing mindfulness and improving focus can help midfielders stay present and make better decisions during high-pressure situations. Consider these techniques:
- Meditation: Practice mindfulness meditation for 5-10 minutes daily to improve overall focus and awareness.
- Breath control: Learn and practice breathing exercises to manage stress and maintain composure during games.
- Attention training: Engage in exercises that challenge your ability to maintain focus, such as the “counting breaths” technique.
- Pre-game routines: Develop a consistent pre-game routine that helps you enter a focused, competitive mindset.
Incorporating these mental preparation techniques into your training regimen can significantly enhance your performance as a lacrosse midfielder, complementing your physical skills and tactical knowledge.
The 5 Tips on Lacrosse workouts for a Midfielder
When it comes to lacrosse, midfielders are the most diverse players. They have to play defense as well as offense.
Types of lacrosse midfielders
The types of lacrosse midfielders differ in men and women lacrosse. In men’s lacrosse, there are three midfielders. On the other hand, the women’s game has 5 in total: 2 defensive, 2 attacking, and 1 central. If we broaden their type, there are FOGO (face-off get off), two-way midfielder, and winger as well.
- Attacking Midfielder: A midfielder who plays the offensive game. He makes goal-scoring odds for the forwards.
- Defensive Midfielder: When the other team is attacking, a defensive midfielder aids the center backs in defending.
- Central: Their work is divided between defense and attack and to play in the center of the pitch.
- FOGO: A midfielder who takes the face-off.
- Winger: This midfielder plays around alleys or wings.
- Two-Way Midfielder: A midfielder who bypasses the restraining line to play in both halves.
5 Tips on lacrosse workouts for a midfielder
Midfielders have lots of responsibilities on their shoulders. Proper training is very important to improve the game. Here are some workout tips that can change your game drastically.
Practice in the Field
Wear all your gears and go to the field. Take your midfield position and run like it’s a real game. Take the ball and run towards the goal with it. Shoot, defense, and attack like you are playing against an opponent team.
When you really run and practice your moves in the field, you will have an idea of your strengths and weaknesses. You will know which of your moves will be more fruitful on the game day. Just remember, running on the field is always more productive than any lying or sitting exercises.
Crawling is important
As lacrosse is known for diverse muscle use, one way to improve body movement is by crawling. A bear crawl would do the job as it will provide the body with coordinated movement without any damage. It impacts shoulders and hips too and enhances motor control, flexibility, and power.
Improving Sprint
Lacrosse players need to run a lot with a great speed to outrun their opponents. That running is not always in a straight line. So you need some drills to practice running sideways and in different directions.
- T-Shape Cone Drills: Take four cones in total and place them 10 yards apart making a T-shape. Then start running from the base to the middle one at the T top. Touch the cone, run to the right cone once and then to the left one. Touch the cones every time and then run back to the base.
- S-Shape Cone Drills: Take five cones in total and make an S-shape keeping 10 yards approximate distance between each cone. Run and touch in S-shape from one S end to the other. This drill will help you to learn to dodge and run in different directions.
- L-Shape Cone Drills: Take three cones and place them in an L shape 10 yards apart approximately. Put your hands on the ground on the outside of any on the one cone. Start running and touch each cone making L-shape. Keep sprinting till you feel tired.
- Interval Sprints: Practicing these sprints helps you to recover quickly in a real game after a full sprint. You can do it by doing a 100-yard sprint every minute. Start at one end of the field and run to the other side. Try to do this with the stopwatch so can you can know your pace. Do it ten times at least to gain something from this drill.
Circuit Drills
Circuit training is needed for the midfielders to develop speed and strength. It also helps in maintaining balance which is important in the game. It is for enhancing intramuscular and intermuscular coordination with the central nervous system. Running with a lacrosse stick requires lots of stamina and power and with these drills, a player gets them all. These are the common exercises that you can do on daily basis:
- Pushups
- Squats
- Side shuffles
- Planks
- Lateral hops
Other exercises that can benefit lacrosse players are medicine balls, Olympic lifts, and plyometrics. They create powerful responses in very little time. When you need explosive power, all the drills that involve multiple joints give better outcomes.
As one foot has to do more work in the field than the other, efficiency is required in this aspect as well. Single-leg strength exercises must also be added to the daily schedule. The exercises should help in balancing as well. You can go for one-leg good mornings, step-ups having knee drive, and Romanian deadlifts.
Torso should not be neglected at all. A powerful torso also lowers the chance of injury during the game. You need to have a strong core for that. To get better results, go for medicine ball circuits.
Water-Based Drills
Lots of training lead to the fatigue of the muscles. Some drills can be performed in the pool which will function as the recovery exercises for the body. Water gives a low impact environment to enhance your strength and stamina.
This is just like a game of retrieving an item from the base of the pool. It can be done alone or in pairs or with the whole team. This drill helps in improving agility. Also, diving with your head down enhances strength. Limiting time also improves the final impact of this game. Going down the pool produces its impact on breathability as well and augments lung capacity.
This drill is for the whole team. Divide your team into two. Ask a member to swim a double-length and then the whole team must assist the first swimmer out of the pool, then other dives and does the same. Repeat in a way that every member gets the chance to swim. The team which completes the whole task first will win.
Algonquin Regional, girls’ lacrosse, playoffs
By Carl Setterlund
| Correspondent
The Algonquin Regional girls’ lacrosse team went to the Central-West Division 1 semifinals in coach Emma Decker’s first year at the helm her alma mater before getting defeated by Western Mass. powerhouse Minnechaug Regional.
Algonquin graduated several midfield standouts – Sophie Scearbo, who now suits up for Merrimack College, in 2019, and then Chloe and Olivia Chiota, who play together at Hamilton College, in 2020, which left the program in flux coming into this season.
Despite welcoming in 13 new varsity players this season, one of the area’s perennial contenders showed they still have plenty of juice, beating Minnechaug for the first time in seven years, 7-6, out in Wilbraham back on May 22.
“It was a long time coming, but we did it,” Decker said. “I think we were a little nervous going into it just because of two years ago in the semifinals, but once we started playing and realized we’re good enough to beat this time, we kind of just took off.”
Replacing Algonquin’s midfield production has been no easy task, but junior captain Lucy Rogers has been leading the way, averaging nearly five goals per game while splitting faceoff duty with classmate Caroline Kelly.
Rounding out Algonquin’s star trio in midfield has been three-sport star Kerryn O’Connell, a senior who is also a talented hockey and field hockey player.
“Our new midfield line just works great together,” Decker said.
Decker, who played goalie herself at Regis College, also touted the contributions of first-year starter in net Nola Garand, a senior who was set to take over the starting gig last year but has made the most of her final season with several big performances.
Garand was key for Algonquin against Minnechaug, racking up 11 saves and then posted a whopping 19 saves the following game in a win over rival Shrewsbury.
“She’s just taken on the role,” Decker said. “Her lacrosse IQ is one of the highest I’ve ever seen out of a goalie. She just reads the whole field, and not only does she know the next step that the attack’s going to do, she knows the step after that.”
Meanwhile, sophomore Ava Wilde has been an X-factor for Algonquin, swinging between attack and midfield as she has been a prolific scorer in her first varsity season.
“We have a young team and not even young age-wise but playing-wise,” Decker said. “Many of them haven’t seen a varsity field before, or if they have it was their freshman or sophomore year, so I think we’ve accomplished a lot and we’re excited for playoffs. ”
Algonquin has only lost this season to Bromfield and won’t have to see the undefeated Trojans in the postseason, as they play in Division 2.
Beyond the talent, what could help Algonquin go far in the playoffs is a sense of togetherness that has been a trademark of the program over the years.
“They don’t get down on each other when we’re down by two or three,” Decker said. “They know how to pump each other up and I think that’s huge, because I don’t have to be the one to keep them in the game. They keep each other in the game, and they keep each other accountable.”

Lacrosse Positions – Everything You Need To Know
Lacrosse is an extremely fast-moving sport, with a lot of emphasis on positional play.
In this article, we’ll cover a few common questions about which positions are more dominant, how the different players are rated, and what their responsibilities are.
It’s a little more complex than explaining the basic lacrosse rules or answering simple questions like “how long is a lacrosse game” – hopefully, you’ll find this useful if you have an interest in the sport.
What are the different positions in lacrosse?
Positions in men’s lacrosse can be divided into four areas of play:
Attacking players
The attacking players have one main purpose, scoring goals. Speed and precision are key to this position, and attackers will often use feints, tricks, and stick skills to outwit and bypass the opposition’s defense to get into a scoring position.
Building a successful attack requires perfect co-ordination with the midfield players, who attacking players rely on to feed the ball forward, and quick thinking to identify opportunities for a shot on the goal before the opposition gets a chance to block them.
Midfield players
Midfield players, or middies, are responsible for controlling the field between the two ends and they switch roles to support their own defensive or attacking players as necessary.
A solid midfield will maintain excellent communication with the players ahead of and behind them while anticipating the movements of the opposition. They are vital in moving the ball upfield to build attacks, as well as providing an initial defense against counterattacks.
The midfield positions involve covering a great deal of distance per game, so stamina and strength are key attributes for a middie.
Defensive players
The key role of defensive players in lacrosse is to prevent the opposing team’s attackers from getting a shot on goal. Successful defense in lacrosse requires excellent coordination between all members of the defensive team, as well as the goalie, to co-ordinate their movements and avoid being outflanked or overrun.
Defensive players will usually use a longer stick to improve their ability to block shots and passes between the opposition players.
Goalkeeper
The goalie is the final defensive player, responsible for guarding the goal against any attacks which make it past the defense. They need extremely fast reactions, as well as a strong physical presence.
The goalie will usually have the best overview of oncoming attacking players and may take the lead in ordering defensive players into the best positions to repel or block opposition attacks.
Positions in the women’s game are slightly different, as we’ll discuss later in this article.
Differences between men’s and women’s lacrosse field positions
There are a few significant differences between the men’s and women’s games when it comes to positions.
The most obvious is that in women’s lacrosse, an extra two attacking players are fielded. This means that in women’s lacrosse offensive plays are carried out by 5, rather than 3 players, which can make for more versatile plays.
Another clear difference is that men’s lacrosse is a contact sport, allowing checking, but this is not permitted in the women’s version. Because of this women’s lacrosse does put players into a face-off position. Instead of a face-off after scoring they have a draw so that there is less physical contact between the players.
What is the hardest position in lacrosse?
You can take a poll of players on lacrosse team formations, and you’ll find a pretty even split between votes for offense and defense positions.
Recent polls found that attack positions came in as a most difficult position, with 34.7% of participants seeing it as the hardest role. Middies gained 11.3% of the vote, while 5.4% of those asked considered defense to be the easiest position on a team. There was one position, however, which overwhelmingly took the honor of the toughest position: 34.7% of all those asked thought that being a goalie presented the largest challenge.
Why is this? We often assume that the guys doing all the goal-scoring are working the hardest, but it seems that those saving the day deserve this glory.
This is actually logical because being a goalkeeper requires an individual level of skill and concentration which differs from the other positions on the field. Out of all of the men’s lacrosse positions (and equally, positions in women’s lacrosse), it is the only position where you’re totally on your own.
What is the most important position in lacrosse?
In our opinion, the most important role on the lacrosse field is probably that of the short stick defenders; these guys are the unsung heroes of teams, and their role forms a crucial element of what lacrosse players do.
Although they rarely score goals and get very little of the individual praise heaped on successful attacking players, they form a vital part of the team’s defensive strategy, playing off the ball, spotting attacks before they are fully formed, and shutting down scoring opportunities.
How many players are on a lacrosse team?
As pointed out above, this depends on whether we’re talking about men’s or women’s lacrosse.
Lacrosse positions (men’s)
Men’s teams include 3 attacking players (known as attackmen), 3 midfielders (lacrosse middies) and 3 defensive players (defensemen) as well as 1 goalie, for a total of 10 players on the field at any one time.
In men’s lacrosse, midfielders can play both attacking and defensive roles.
Lacrosse positions (women’s)
There are 12 girls lacrosse positions, with teams made up of 5 attacking players, 6 defensive players, and 1 goalie.
The attacking players are separated into different positions, first home, second home, and third home, plus two general attackers.
The women’s lacrosse defense is similarly divided up into a center, two wings, one cover point, and one “third man”.
What is an LSM?
In lacrosse, middie refers to a midfielder, and within that category, LSM (long-stick midfielder) refers to a middie who can play in multiple positions. They may be substituted on as an offensive or defensive player, or come on simply to complete a face-off or draw and then be subbed back out.
These players are flexible; they have the necessary mix of offense and defense skills to handle multiple roles and may be deployed by the coach to increase the team’s attacking power or defensive strength depending on the flow of the game.
Lacrosse positions takeaway
If you are new to the sport, hopefully this position introduction will help you understand the game a little better.
Though you will see a few differences between men and women’s lacrosse, they follow the same basical rules and, in general, have the same types of positions.

2013 College Lacrosse Preview: Duke’s Midfield Situation is Best Described as “Huh?”
Duke’s midfield situation is pretty solid compared to a lot of teams in the country: The Blue Devils may struggle a little to replace midfield contributions from graduated players, but Duke’s issues with that personnel unit are more akin to Aesop’s fable “The Fox and the Cat.” The fable is built upon the premise that a host of options in a crisis or dangerous situation is less effective than a single option; fate, as a consequence, is often determined by the appearance of self-imposed confusion. That’s kind of what the Devils are staring down this season — with a myriad of players that could fulfill various roles in Duke’s offensive midfield, John Danowski is staring at a situation where he and his staff may need to weigh the “best” option in a sea of confusion.
Replacing the production of Justin Turri and Rob Rotanz isn’t without consequence — both were strong presences in the Devils’ overall offensive approach (especially Rotanz, who sported the team’s highest usage from the midfield a season ago and basically turned his crosse into a weapon of mass destruction) — and losing those two contributors from the team’s first midfield line — a unit, in totem, that often paced Duke’s offensive success — necessarily carries with it production concerns. For the Devils, though, there are options that can step forward and contribute with aplomb; the question is whether — and how — Duke pursues that situation. There is a ton of midfield and midfield-like talent that John Danowski has at his disposal, yet the pressure of finding a rotation and consistent value from the unit has added pressure and concern this season for the Devils for two reasons: (1) With the expectation of increased transition play this year under the new rules (and how Duke likes to push pace), midfield play carries additional importance in 2013; and (2) The blended talents that Duke has at some attack positions, combined with some heralded freshman that may have contribution capacity this spring, creates an additional layer of decision-making for the Devils’ staff.
As of right now, Duke has a situation where there is a large basket of players — David Lawson (Sr.), Jake Tripucka (Sr.), Josh Offit (Sr.), Will Haus (So.), and Deemer Class (Fr.) — that are in a position to contribute in some form or fashion to the first two midfield lines with a handful of other players — Tanner Scott (So.), Kyle Keenan (So.), and John Shaffer (Fr.) — noted in other publications and places as potential options for the Devils on the offensive side of the midfield. Given that, there are some questions that arise relative to what Duke is going to do with this situation:
- Tripucka and/or Lawson could anchor the first midfield line, but do the Devils allow Tripucka and Lawson to work in tandem on the first line or do they break them up? Each has different kind of value and impact the game in different ways. Combining the two on the same line creates a dynamic look to operate with Duke’s exceptional attack, but is there more value in splitting the two to provide balanced value on different lines? That’s not a question that I’m in a position to answer; if I was, this would be a much shorter piece of Internet writing.
- Depending on what happens with Tripucka and Lawson, Offit’s position could ultimately be determined. Offit is a nice righty counterpoint to Lawson’s left-handed shot, but he could play well off of Tripucka’s all-around play. Of course, if Duke goes with a Lawson-Tripucka-Offit line there is all kinds of destruction inherent in that, but if Lawson and Tripucka are split, Offit’s role as to where — and with whom — he runs is undefined (right now).
- Will Haus, Deemer Class, and the rest of the players in the mix are going to have roles in the midfield, but where they run is up for grabs. Both Haus and Class look like near locks to contribute to the second midfield, but how that second midfield is constituted could ultimately determine what kind of seasons they have — Haus, a converted short-stick defensive midfield, is going to need some shepherding and Class, while immensely talented, is a freshman and a seasoned linemate like Lawson or Tripucka could show him the way.
- With a talented attack that has more bodies than positions at this point (if you look past how players blend their roles a bit, especially in Duke’s approach), Duke could move an attack or two back to the midfield, providing further support to a unit that could use it (and, consequently, also making any projections about Duke’s midfield situation even more opaque). Jordan Wolf is rife with the qualities of a strong midfielder, and if Duke goes into inverted postures he could attack from “X” while allowing the Devils to still run some combination of Christian Walsh, Josh Dionne, Case Matheis, Kyle Keenan, Eddie Loftus, and Josh Offit in the attack. If Case Matheis is able to step in and contribute as a freshman as many anticipate, the option of bumping Wolf back becomes more attractive (if not in totality, at least in selected opportunities). If Wolf doesn’t get midfield runs, Matheis could see some time in spots running with the midfield unit, although he does look most comfortable dodging and playing from an attack posture; as a freshman, it may be putting too much on his plate to assume a midfield role at this point in his career. But the overall concept remains: With a deep attack with players holding hybrid-type skills, Duke’ midfield situation is clouded by options that come from without rather than just within.
None of this is etched in stone, and a lot is going to be determined as the Blue Devils start to push through their 2013 campaign. There are worse problems to have, I suppose, but this is still an issue that will need to be addressed.

90,000 Arsenal have the best midfield since Vieira. Here’s why
These Football Times
Arsenal’s midfield line was once considered one of the best in the Premier League.Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva formed a reinforced concrete duo that became an integral part of the 2005/06 season, when the Gunners were called “invincible”.
Now, under the leadership of Unai Emery, the glory of those days may well return. Arsenal once again have a powerful team in the center of the field. In fact, the Spanish revolution is taking place in north London – especially in the midfield. But what exactly did Emery change?
Balance and Defense
Throughout the past season, Arsene Wenger has been immersed in experiments in terms of the middle lane. The Frenchman is not that he could not fully decide what is closer to him – to use two midfielders or three. He constantly shuffled people even within these two schemes. In one round, El Nenni, Jaka and Wilshire could go out together. In the next, Jaka is paired with Ramsey.
The Short Fuse
During his adaptation period, Emery also leaned towards experimentation. Jaka, Torreira and Genduzi were equally eligible for a place at the base. But this was not a feverish hesitation, but had its purpose. It was very important for all three to try themselves in combat conditions in conjunction with a partner. In case of injury or other problems, any of the three will be ready to come on as a substitute and will not waste time on adaptation in the middle of the season.
The main function of such a bundle, which is also called “pivot” (or hinge):
A) to tie together all the lines of the team, thereby forming its core;
B) control the pace of the game, as well as ferry the ball to the final third of the field to the opponent’s goal, where creative performers such as Mesut Ozil can show their best qualities;
Ouest-France
With Jacqui and Torreira, Arsenal have received a hardworking and dynamic pair of midfielders.Jaka is primarily responsible for further propelling the ball and delivering it to Ozil. Torreira in this pair is the main cleaner and the person in charge of the selection of the ball.
Jaka and Torreira have returned the ball to their team more often than other Arsenal players – 73 and 68 times, respectively. According to this indicator, they are among the top 15 players in the Premier League, and of the top 6 teams, this indicator is better only for Pogba and Jorginho.
No one more often than Jaki blocked shots (5 times), and did not intercept more than Torreira’s passes (18 times). This suggests that a pair of defensive midfielders serves not only to help the defense, but also significantly frees the attacking players from the rough work. Performers such as Ozil and Mkhitaryan, thanks to the productive work of Jaki and Torreira, have the opportunity to focus on the attack.
Evening Standard
A possession mentality
Perhaps no other club has experienced the arrival of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola in the league the way it did with Arsenal. Last season, the Gunners conceded 13 goals against the two teams.
Emery in the shortest possible time managed to turn the team into a tough nut from a helpless recruitment of performers. In two matches against Manchester City and Liverpool, Londoners conceded only 3 goals.
The last match against the Reds showed how much Arsenal has changed during this time. The Gunners had possession 61.8% of the time, touched the ball more often (758 touches versus 563), and gave more passes (586 versus 356).
Jaka and Torreira are the two piles on which this dominance in midfield rests. While Klopp’s philosophy is often based on explosive, penetrating attacks, the last match between these teams was more balanced in this regard and with an emphasis on possession.
Thanks to the duet of Jacqui and Torreira, Arsenal has become more calm and harmonious. There is no longer any risk that the team will falter in front of a serious opponent. This is achieved thanks to the ability of the two defenders to hold the ball.
Among midfielders this season, only Jorginho has touched more (1,237) than Jaca (1,060).Also, only the Brazilian midfielder Chelsea passed more often (1136 passes) than the Swiss (857 passes).
Ronaldo.com
But more importantly, Jaka and the rest of Arsenal have improved their passing game in the final third of the pitch at the opposition goal (226 passes). According to this indicator, the Gunners are in the top 10 Premier League this season with a 75% success rate.
Torreira cannot boast of the same ability to support attacks as that of Jacqui, but this is not his main task. Torreira gave 663 accurate passes – more than his peers Matic and Dyer.
Consistency
One of the most impressive moments of Emery’s start was his quick adaptation to new conditions. Even Guardiola admitted that it took him a while to get used to it.
In many ways, Jaka became an assistant for Emery’s quick adaptation, who tried to be responsible for the coordination of team actions last season. So far, only three players have played all 49 matches since the start of last season. Jaka is one of them.
The Swiss has been the target of frequent criticism last season, but it is possible that he lacked an assistant in building team coherence. Now there is Torreira next to him, in the game of Jaki there is less panic and more self-control.
Arsenal’s midfield will finally not be skewed in one direction or another – it has two complementary parts. Torreira, with his irrepressible energy and focus on gnawing the ball, gives more opportunities for Jacqui to help attack and hack the opponent’s defense. And Jaka, with his ability to both support offense and defend, becomes an excellent partner for Torreira. The Uruguayan does not need to puzzle over creation – all his attention is focused on destruction and control of the ball.
All of this is made possible by Emery’s meticulous attention to detail. The Spaniard is literally obsessed with tactics and is used to disassembling the game to the smallest detail.
We Ain’t Got No History
“In every match we know what to do,” says Jaka. “We know the opponent perfectly, his strengths and weaknesses.”
Each team player is privy to the intricacies of his job on the pitch. This is the guarantee that Arsenal have not lost 14 matches already, and their midfield is increasingly beginning to resemble the legendary bunch of Vieira and Gilberto Silva.

Guardiola signed a contract with Man City long before leaving Bayern midfield and attack from the RPL.What a team of football stars looks like at the Tokyo Olympics The Olympic football tournament promises to be hot. The Olympic football tournament promises to be hot. The America’s Cup died down, finished off all post-match penalties at Euro, and somewhere on the horizon a new club season appeared. However, the Olympic football tournament in Tokyo awaits us before it. Olympic tournaments are a strange thing, but even to them, real tops sometimes come. This year, teams are allowed to apply for players no older than 24 years old (usually no older than 23, but they gave concessions due to the postponement of the Olympics for a year). Also, each team can enter no more than three players of any age. We have assembled a symbolic team of the main stars who would not get lost in a competition of a higher rank. Photo: © Icon Sportswire / Contributor / Icon Sportswire / Gettyimages.ru Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is the author of one hit, but what a hit! At the 2014 World Cup, he was twice named hero of the match, although Mexico won none of them. At the group stage, the Mexicans, thanks to Ochoa’s heroism, kept a goalless draw with the Brazilians, and in the first playoff match the North American team beat the Dutch for a long time, but eventually lost due to a penalty missed in the 91st minute. Then everyone was amazed – how can such a goalkeeper play for the modest French “Ajaccio”? After the World Cup, Ochoa signed Malaga, but the Mexican did not gain a foothold in the squad and, in fact, spent two years on the bench. Now the 36-year-old goalkeeper is playing out at home in the America club. His performances for the national team were very often bright (he was also the hero of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009), so we are waiting for the fireworks this time too. Ishaq Belfodil and Eric Bailly / Photo: © Anadolu Agency / Contributor / Anadolu Agency / Gettyimages.ru At the youth tournament in Burkina Faso, Espanyol scouts spotted 17-year-old defender Eric Bailly and brought him to Spain. For a couple of years, the Ivorian has grown to the senior team and was quickly overbought by Villarreal. In the 2015/16 season, when Bayi became a base player for the Spanish club, Villarreal reached the Europa League semi-finals, where they lost to Liverpool in two matches. So Eric got on the pencil to the leadership of several English clubs at once. The fight for Bayi was won by Manchester United, who paid £ 30 million for the newcomer. In Mourinho’s team, the African made a great debut and was recognized as the best player in the team in August, but after the first year, injuries began.Bayi is now a rotation player and rarely appears on the field, although this spring the club extended his contract with him until 2024. By today’s standards, Diego Carlos revealed himself very late – at the age of 23 he played for the underdog of the Portuguese championship “Estoril” and did not dream of being called up to the national team. In June 2016, he was acquired by Nantes for two million euros, and it was there that the central defender began to draw attention to himself. Carlos’ steady progress led to a transfer to Sevilla in 2019.In Spain, the defender quickly became a major player in the ambitious club and won the Europa League with him. Last November, he was even invited to the Brazilian national team for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Uruguay. Photo: © Koji Watanabe / Contributor / Getty Images Sport / Gettyimages.ru I mean, who is this? This, by the way, is a player who spent eight years at Southampton (saw the rise of Mauricio Pochettino’s coaching career there) and played over a hundred caps for the Japanese national team. In 2020, Yoshida moved from Southampton to Sampdoria, and the English media called it “the end of an era”. The disciplined Japanese always amazed with patience – whenever he was in reserve behind the back of more talented colleagues (among whom was, for example, Virgil van Dijk), he did not hysterical, but continued to work in training and wait for the next chance. And every time he was waiting for him. Pedri / Photo: © Fran Santiago – UEFA / Contributor / UEFA / Gettyimages.ru One of the most promising footballers right now. Pedri is only 18 years old, but he is already a player in the base of Barcelona and the Spanish national team, who entered the symbolic team of the tournament at the end of Euro 2020. The midfielder who moved to Barça from Las Palmas is, in a sense, the heir of Xavi and Iniesta – he is equally focused on accurate passes, including a large percentage of sharpening ones. The staff confusion at the Camp Nou helped such a young footballer to gain a foothold in the big club.Ronald Koeman confided in the 18-year-old, and now a global megastar is growing up in Catalonia. Photo: © Sebastian Widmann – UEFA / Contributor / UEFA / Gettyimages.ru Ceballos is another footballer who performs better on the national team than in the clubs. In 2017, he was named the best player in the European Youth Championship (for players under 19 years old) – then the Spaniards lost in the final to the Germans. After that Ceballos from Betis was bought by Real Madrid. Two seasons have passed in which the young midfielder has appeared on the field less often than he would like. In the summer of 2019, he went to another European Youth Championship (already for players under 21) and was very good again – the Spaniards won the tournament. After that, Real Madrid gave Ceballos on loan to Arsenal, where he played for the last two years. In terms of club prospects, Dani would have been more profitable to spend the preseason with Real Madrid, but he chose the Olympic team. Dani Alves with America’s Cup / Photo: © REUTERS / Ueslei Marcelino The most titled footballer in the world is remembered by everyone as a right-back, but in our scheme he plays higher.First, Alves in previous years hung out at someone else’s penalty area more often than at his own. Secondly, in the Brazilian club São Paulo, where Dani spent two seasons, he sometimes played almost under the attackers in the center. For the main team, Alves is already a bit old – 38 years old, after all, but for the Olympic tournament it’s still nothing. After a triumphant European career, the Brazilian expects to take a big trophy with Sao Paulo or the national team. Photo: © ANP Sport / Contributor / Getty Images Sport / Gettyimages.ru Marco became a Real Madrid player back in 2014, but he still can’t help calling him the team’s main footballer. At first he was chased on leases, then he was given a minimum of playing time, then he played more often, but in a terrible season for Real Madrid – 2018/19, and after Zidane’s return, the midfielder tore his cruciate ligaments of the knee and was out for almost the entire season. Perhaps the appointment of Ancelotti will finally allow Asensio to become the real leader of Real Madrid. After all, the ever-promising guy is already 25 years old. Photo: © REUTERS / Sergio Moraes Fluminense’s winger moved to the English Premier League in 2017. It took him just one season at Watford to jump onto the next step – Everton (his acquaintance with coach Marco Silva also helped). The first two seasons were very successful for Richarlison – both times he shared the laurels of the team’s top scorer with one of his teammates. Do not forget about the footballer in the main Brazilian national team – in 2019 he won the continental tournament, scoring in the final, and this year he reached the final with the team.Apparently, the winger has not played enough yet and is in no hurry to return to rainy Liverpool. Photo: © Rodrigo Valle / Contributor / Getty Images Sport / Gettyimages.ru The pupil of Newells Old Boys in 2015 liked Roma, but after several years of playing on loans he did not convince the leadership of the Roman club of his necessity. Ponce has spent the last two years at Spartak, scoring a total of 21 goals. There have never been such productive Argentines in the Muscovites, although Larsson and Sobolev still remain the main figures in the team’s attack. Ponce is, of course, far from the main Argentina national team, but in the Olympic team he is in good standing: he was actively involved during the qualifying matches and eventually got into the final application. At least in this team, the competition will be easier for him. Photo: © Srdjan Stevanovic / Contributor / Getty Images Sport / Gettyimages.ru Malcolm was one of President Bartomeu’s mindless purchases at Barcelona after a vibrant career at Bordeaux. The knocked out pilot was picked up by Zenit, but so far Malcolm has not justified high expectations – in two years he scored only seven goals. The performance in the debut season was seriously influenced by injuries, and it seems that there is a feeling that the Brazilian is progressing, but still, for 40 million euros, I wanted a faster return. With Malcolm getting to the Olympic Games, a whole story turned out: Zenit did not want to let the player go, and the national team even resigned themselves to this. Douglas Augusto was then injured, and the Brazilian Football Federation re-requested Malcolm to participate in the tournament. In “Zenith” have mercy, although the Russian championship by this time has already begun. 90,000 “Zenith’s midfield will become more versatile”: the main thing about Wendel
The official site of the blue-white-blue presents the Brazilian newcomer of the Semak team.
Photo: TASS
Wendel was born on August 28, 1997 in the small town of Duque di Caxias, part of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The future Zenit midfielder got into football quite late – he signed his first contract only at the age of 17 with the local Tigres, and before that he played only at the amateur level.
Such a start to his career did not prevent Wendel from taking off quickly – in 2014, he left for Setubal for several months to pass a screening in Portuguese teams. One of them was Benfica – there Wendel went through a two-week screening, but it never came to signing a contract.
Wendel returned to Brazil, and a year later he moved to one of the most status teams in the country, Fluminense. Until 2017, the midfielder played in the youth teams of “Flu”, and then coach Abel Braga raised Wendel to the base. The footballer admitted that at that moment his salary increased from 4 to 17 thousand euros, and this influenced the progress.
It got to the point that before one of the games Abel Braga told reporters that Wendel would not play due to discipline problems: “The problem is only in his behavior. He’s late every day. I raised him from the youth team, gave him a chance at the base. But now something needs to be changed, it cannot go on like this. ”
After such a performance by Bragi, Wendel stopped being late – this was also influenced by his mother, with whom the player is very close.
“Of course, when I lose, it’s not cool to come home and hear: ‘Why did you do this? Why didn’t you do it? “At such moments I feel unwell, but then I calm down and try to analyze everything that my mother tells me,” Wendel said.
By the end of 2017, Wendel was noticed in Europe – the media wrote about the interest of PSG and CSKA, but the midfielder ended up in Sporting, which was then coached by Jorge Jesus.
In the first six months, Wendel almost did not play – only four matches in the championship.
“This is a young player who is gradually adapting to Portugal. We believe in his work and his talent, I am sure that in the future he will play more, ”said Jesus.
Now Wendel admits that that period also changed him: “When I wasn’t playing, I thought: why did I come? In Fluminense I always went out on the pitch, but who needs me here? These are hard thoughts, but fleeting. I remember saying that I want to leave, I want to quit everything. But I stayed and became stronger both as a footballer and as a man. That Wendel closed and did not share problems with people. Now I am much more open. ”
After Jesuses with Sporting, Jose Peseiro worked for several months – with him Wendel also did not get into the start. The jump happened with the Dutchman Marcel Keizer – under him Wendel became not only a base player, but also one of the players who regulate the pace and direction of Sporting’s attacks. With Keizer, Wendel won the first serious trophy of his career – the Portuguese Cup 2018/19.
“I really like Arthur, I follow his game.He is technical, works great with the ball, dribbles. I take on a lot even in training, because the risk is less there than in the game. Passing is my strong point, but I think I can develop in this direction too, ”said the midfielder.
Wendel made his youth debut last year for the Brazilian national team: “It’s a very special feeling to represent your country. I remember calling my mom to tell her about the challenge, about my feelings. I still have to work hard to be called up to the first national team. “
Wendel says that one of his greatest strengths is passing, but the midfielder can pull the ball himself. For example, last season he finished seventh in the Portuguese championship in meters by which the players propel the ball during the races.
Now Zenit’s midfield will become even more versatile.

90,000 Provincial lawyers play in midfield / Politics / Nezavisimaya gazeta
Retired law enforcement officers treat the actions of former colleagues with understanding
The services of lawyers in medium and small towns of the country are not available to most of their residents.Photo PhotoXPress.ru
Lawyers practicing in medium and small towns and rural areas are older people who have become advocates after serving in law enforcement or the courts. This is a defining feature of their professional portrait, drawn up by sociologists. They see their status more as additional earnings, are loyal to the work of their former colleagues and are less likely to complain about violation of their rights than the capital’s lawyers. And since provincials themselves say that their services are available to no more than 40% of the local population, such lawyers are more willing to work as appointees.
The age of lawyers from small towns is shifted to retirement, there are critically few young people: only 22% of the interviewed lawyers were under 40 years old, with one in five of them over 60, according to a study prepared by sociologist Yekaterina Khodzhaeva from the Institute for Law Enforcement Problems together with the project “ The voice of a lawyer. “
For many, the current profession is only secondary employment, an addition to the seniority pension in law enforcement agencies or in the judiciary. According to this survey, half of lawyers in middle and small Russia are former law enforcement officers, about 17% have previously worked in courts. And only 14% of respondents came to the legal profession after a law school.
This is probably why many of these defenders are loyal to their former colleagues and do not allow harsh criticism towards them. Thus, half of the interviewed lawyers conducting criminal cases assessed the quality of the work of the Investigative Committee and the bodies of inquiry of the Ministry of Internal Affairs as “average”. “The work of the investigators of the Investigative Committee is generally assessed positively rather than negatively – 27% versus 18%,” the study says. Few respondents gave a sharply negative assessment of the justice system, moreover, pointing mainly to the police. “Most often, the rights of lawyers were violated by employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in second place are the courts and the Investigative Committee,” the study said. That is, the investigators of the Ministry of Internal Affairs violated the rights of almost every fifth respondent, and the prosecutor’s office, bailiffs, the Federal Penitentiary Service – only every tenth. Some even say that, they say, they have never faced a violation of their rights, and there are many who consider these violations rather formal and insignificant.
It turned out that most often defenders from the provinces are faced with a refusal to provide information in response to a lawyer’s request. This was reported by 40%. Moreover, the courts periodically do not notify them of the date and time of the hearings, they give little time to familiarize themselves with the case materials. Also, judges pay little attention to the rights of lawyers as parties to the process, which, according to the Constitution and laws, must be adversarial. Also, lawyers from the periphery point to a serious problem of arrears in payment for their work as appointed attorneys. At the same time, every eighth of the respondents met defenders-“understudies”.
According to the survey, 17% faced various obstacles when accessing their clients, the same number of respondents indicated that there were no conditions for confidential communication with a client. We are talking about the audio or video recording of such meetings by the jailers, as well as the presence of the SIZO staff during conversations with the principals; there are many complaints about hidden wiretapping. However, every second person said that he does not face any problems in the pre-trial detention center. The remaining half are dissatisfied mainly with the inability of local isolation wards to work. The most common problem was the lack of offices and the length of time waiting for visits. And, of course, the survey showed that in the pre-trial detention center they still require the permission of the investigator from the lawyers to meet with the client and conduct close searches of the defenders at the entrance to the institution.
As noted in the document, provincial lawyers did not often come across legal methods of influencing them: only 8% indicated that over the past two years they were summoned for interrogation as a witness in the case, and another 6% noted that “pressure was exerted by taking a subscription on nondisclosure “.Violence as a method of pressure was recalled by 3% of the respondents. On the other hand, more than 80% of the interviewed lawyers were faced with refusals to initiate criminal cases, every tenth had to appeal against such actions, and this happened often – from a quarter to a half of cases.
The author of the survey emphasizes that, unlike lawyers from the capital, “rural lawyers” “statistically significantly more often stated that they had not faced a violation of their rights over the past two years”. But more than 60% of respondents are afraid of competition from lawyers without status, especially since due to the pandemic, the employment of most lawyers has decreased by almost half.True, even before that they had not experienced an excessive load, a third of the respondents admitted that the load on themselves was insufficient. However, due to the covid, the solvency of citizens has decreased, according to the estimates of the lawyers themselves, now their services are available only to 40% of the local population. And therefore, being engaged in criminal cases, including by appointment, that is, with payment from the budget, in small towns is perceived not as a burden, but rather as a bonus.
The study found that advocates in deep Russia are almost equally divided among those who participate in the state-subsidized free legal aid program (46%).Only a few do not have such experience. And almost all of the respondents are involved in criminal cases by appointment. The overwhelming majority – 87% – enter such cases by schedule or by appointment in the electronic system. Nevertheless, every tenth respondent admitted that he entered into cases as a “state defender”, bypassing the rules of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation at the invitation of the court. “Such defenders, no matter how active and zealous they may be, practically cannot avoid participating in cases with a special order (Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure): only 8% of lawyers said that they did not have such cases in practice.
