When it comes down to the performance of a goalie stick, a well strung pocket makes a lot of difference. But for stringers it’s also a completely different approach. There are a few types of goalie mesh and just as with field mesh each has its benefits and its drawbacks. Ranging from small 20 diamond goalie mesh through the vastly popular 17 diamond goalie mesh and 12 diamond goalie mesh to 10 diamond goalie monster mesh. We also carry a 15 diamond composite mesh variant.

17 diamond goalie mesh

Let’s start off with the classic choice – 17D. This usually comes in hard and soft versions. It may have been one of the first to appear on the market as it’s basically 10D mesh with more diamonds added for width. I have to say this, it’s probably my least favorite type of mesh, but that’s a thing of preference.
17 diamond soft goalie mesh is what you usually get in beginners sticks. It’s main advantage is softness which helps absorb a lot of force from the ball and offers a lot of hold. But with softness comes more whip and lower durability.
17 diamond hard goalie mesh takes care of a lot if the durability and whip issues. But with less whip comes less hold. My least favorite thing about 17D mesh is that it’s practically necessary to string open sidewalls, bit I’ll get to that later.

20 diamond goalie mesh

In order to get rod of the open sidewall dillema, 20 diamond goalie mesh was created. I bet that 20D mesh popularity has now surpassed 17D. These are basically the same diamond size with the added benefit of being able to easily string a closed sidewall pattern and still get a nice channel. Also a wider mesh allows to get a much deeper pocket and more stretch for easier catching. We already have this type of mesh from East Coast Mesh and 20D Semi-Soft is on its way as I’m writing this along with it’s box lacrosse extra long version. I would definitely recommend it.

12 diamond goalie mesh

12D is likely the most balanced goalie mesh. Large diamonds offer good hold, even if a bit of rebound is added. It’s also constructed for easy closed sidewall stringing with a good channel. We have the largest array of variations on this mesh – Standard Hard, Extra Hard, Semi Hard, and East Coast Mesh available.

10D goalie mesh will give you the best hold on the ball, but also the largest amount of rebound as it doesn’t stretch that easily.

15 diamond composite mesh

While the aforementioned meshes are usually made of nylon, composite mesh is a secret blend of materials made by The Stringer’s Shack. The diamonds in this mesh are quite large, and the coating is hard to reduce whip. It’s also our all time best selling goalie mesh.

Types of goalie head stringing styles

Since we’re already on goalie stringing lingo, let’s cover the bases.

Goalie closed sidewall stringing technique

This is the straight up stringing technique. Take everything you know from field heads stringing and add the extra large factor. Interlocking is usually a good idea up top, then a double up or a few and then bring it down close to the throat for a nice channel and some depth.

Goalie open sidewall stringing technique

The open sidewall technique could be called a blend of mesh and tratitional, something like the corner pocket of goalie heads. Most commonly used with 17D mesh which tends to be too narrow for a good channel and good depth on closed sidewalls. Open sidewalls usually mean taking a piece of sidewall or shooting lace and running it from the top of the sidewall directly to the bottom of the sidewall while weaving through the outermost mesh diamond and pulling it tight. Then you use string to weave a sort of traditionall crosslace weave to bring the mesh in closer to the head. This allows a better channel to form and gives the pocket more depth.

The Space Commander is probably the most most recognized traditional goalie pocket. But as with field heads, everything is possible. Traditional goalie pockets are heavy, usually whippy and rebound a lot. But for the sake of looking awesome that’s sometimes negligible.
