Mesh infection after hernia repair is a serious complication that is usually treated by removal of the implant. The aim of the study was to determine the risk factors associated with mesh infection and to evaluate the effectiveness of conservative wound therapy in maintaining the infected mesh.
Methods
We conducted a retrospective analysis of 476 consecutively operated patients with incisional hernias who received mesh implants from February 1, 2000 to February 28, 2005 at our institute.
Results
Thirty-one out of 476 (6.5%) patients developed deep wound infection involving the implanted mesh. Multivariate analysis showed that only the operation time is a significant risk factor associated with mesh infection (p = 0.0038). In 17 (55%) cases out of 31, the infected mesh was preserved thanks to conservative measures. A significant relationship was observed between the type of mesh used and the ability to preserve it under conditions of infection. Conservative therapy allowed to preserve 100% of infected polyglactin / polypropylene meshes, only 20% polypropylene and 23% PTFE / polypropylene meshes (p <0.0001). None of the patients with preserved mesh had a recurrent hernia at the site of surgery.
Conclusion

Deep wound surgical infection (SSI) after mesh implantation in incisional hernia is a serious challenge for both the patient and the surgeon. Many authors recommend removing the infected mesh if the infection cannot be completely eliminated by conservative measures and / or antibiotic therapy [1-3].However, removal of the mesh usually leads to recurrence of the hernia, which will require autoplasty or re-insertion of the mesh, if courage is enough [1, 4, 5]. Therefore, saving the infected mesh without removing it is highly desirable. The number of observations when the infected mesh was preserved is small [6-8]. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors associated with mesh infection and to evaluate the effectiveness of conservative wound therapy in implant preservation.
Methods
We conducted a retrospective study of all p / o abdominal hernias operated on from February 1, 2000 to February 28, 2005 at the Department of Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria.In patients who received a mesh prosthesis, anamnesis, age, body mass index, type and size of hernia, the presence of diabetes, steroid use, and smoking were studied. Details of the operation itself included the year of its performance, duration, surgeon’s qualifications, surgical technique, additional intraoperative procedures, mesh type and size, suture type, intra- and postoperative antimicrobial therapy, intraoperative washing with 250-500 ml of solution before wound closure, and drainage. In addition, the serum levels of creatinine and albumin were studied.All these data were compared in patients with infected and non-infected mesh in terms of identifying potential risk factors for wound suppuration.
Operation
It was performed under general anesthesia. The size of the hernia was measured by the operating surgeon during the intervention. Intraoperative status was determined by categories, according to the criteria of the National Academy of Sciences [9], 465 operations were recognized as clean (98%) and 11 (2%) – purely contaminated. The first dressing was performed as expected on the 2nd day.The sutures were removed at 10-14.
Treating and documenting mesh infection
In all patients, the SSI diagnosis was based on clinical symptoms such as redness, edema, local hyperthermia, and pus separation. Suppuration was classified according to the CDC guidelines: SSI 1 (superficial), SSI 2 (deep wound), SSI 3 (interorgan and cavity) [10]. In case of infection, the sutures were removed, the pus was sent for inoculation, and antimicrobial therapy was prescribed.Patients were treated according to the recommendations of the European Association for the Treatment of Wounds, using periodically changing dressings, washing wounds with disinfectants, absorbents, leaving bandages containing silver [11]. With a wound diameter of more than 2 cm, vacuum therapy was used. Secondary wound closure was not used, adhering to the concept of open wound healing and fear of reactivation of the infection. Antibiotics were administered routinely based on culture results.
Results
Patient characteristics
In total, 1188 patients with abdominal hernias were operated on during this period.478 (40.2%) received a prosthesis, the rest underwent autoplasty. The indications for alloplasty were hernias larger than 4 cm or recurrent hernias. The method of mesh placement was chosen by the surgeon himself. Of the 478, 369 (77.2%) had a median hernia. In 107 (22.4%), the hernia was localized in another part of the abdomen. In 161 (33.7%) patients, we placed a mesh for recurrent hernia. Two patients (0.4%) were excluded from the study due to lack of data. Only 96% of patients were followed up for an average of 44 months (ranging from 1 to 116 months).
Mesh Infection
Seroma was observed in 10 (2.1%) of 476 patients, while 31 (6.5%) developed deep wound suppuration (SSI 2) with mesh involvement.There were no patients with intra-abdominal and interorgan suppuration (SSI 3). In patients with infected mesh, wound sizes were ≤2 cm in 47.1%, 2–10 cm in 23.5%, 10–20 cm in 17.6%, and> 20 cm in 11.8% of patients. The mean time to clinical attack of infection after surgery was 12 days (2-42 days). From the moment of wound suppuration, broad-spectrum antibiotics were prescribed for 7-14 days, which were regulated according to the antibiogram (Table 1).

Risk factors for mesh infection
The duration of the operation is the only factor affecting the risk of infection.It grows statistically significant every 15 minutes. Factors such as the size of the hernia, surgery for recurrence, additional interventions during hernia repair, suture type, drainage, wound washing, antibiotic prophylaxis, surgeon’s qualifications did not differ statistically significantly in patients with mesh infection and without it. The mesh was retained in 17 of 31 patients (55%), and in the remaining 14 (45%) patients had to be removed.The average duration of conservative therapy was 81 days (range = 24-213).

In this post, we discuss the problem of keeping an infected mesh. In a retrospective analysis of 476 hernia repairs, we managed to retain the implant in 55% (17/31) of infections. All 100% of the infected polyglactin-polypropylene meshes were preserved by conservative treatment. Most of the polytetrafluoroethylene / polypropylene meshes and pure polypropylene meshes had to be removed due to the ineffectiveness of conservative therapy.This difference can be explained by the relatively large pore size of absorbable nets (2-5 mm), in comparison with polypropylene (1-2 mm). Large pores promote better penetration into the partially absorbable network of surrounding tissues [12], better migration of leukocytes into the network and cleansing in case of infection. When using PTFE, the prosthesis is encapsulated by fibrous tissue, which makes it less accessible to the cells that provide immunity, while preserving the infection [13]. An improvement in leukocyte migration can also be facilitated by 50% dissolution of the galactin component of the network, which occurs in 60-70 days.It is for these meshes that vacuum therapy (VAC) is effective even for large wounds. It is a routine component for the treatment of large or deep wounds. VAC is extremely valuable for removing purulent wound contents from wound crevices and for compressing a wound during its healing and stimulating regeneration [14-19]. Today it is the leading method for treating purulent wounds, especially in the presence of a mesh. In addition, VAC is an extremely valuable method for outpatients with complicated wounds that require long-term treatment.
Although VAC therapy costs approximately € 60–70 / day, studies comparing the best wound therapy methods find this the most cost effective treatment [20]. To prevent unnecessary conservative treatment in cases of infection, we recommend early mesh removal in patients with non-absorbable implants and open wound management. Moreover, we do not recommend delaying conservative treatment for mesh infection in patients operated on for recurrent hernias, because, in our experience, it is quite difficult to maintain the mesh in this situation.We believe that these patients have a worse chance of wound healing without removing the mesh, due to the large amount of fibrous tissue in the surgical site. Also, infected residues from the first operation, such as ligatures not removed.
Our data show that the success of conservative therapy depends on experience – the meshes were removed, as a rule, in the first year of the study, when there was no experience with conservative therapy. This is proved by the fact that the number of retained grids was 0% in the first 2 years and 38, 75, and 92%, respectively, in the following.In addition, the use of polyglactin / polypropylene meshes increased from 1% in the first year to 4, 12, 51, 61 and 75% in the following years. This also, along with the increase in experience, had an impact on the likelihood of retaining the meshes during the study period.
Clearly, the best way to combat mesh infection is to prevent it. Traditional risk factors for wound infection in general surgery include duration of surgery, hypoalbuminemia, body mass index, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, steroids, diabetes, etc.[21-26]. Our analysis showed that the duration of the operation is of paramount importance, any effort in this direction is justified. Therefore, we suggest the operation as early as possible, while the hernia is small.
Interestingly, patients with drainage, flushing of the wound before suturing, or antimicrobial prophylaxis are more prone to mesh infection. Although this trend is not statistically significant. We do not recommend the routine use of antibiotics for alloplasty – it is pointless.
In conclusion, conservative treatment of the infected mesh is possible, albeit lengthy. Success is likely when using a partially absorbable mesh.

The widespread introduction of synthetic materials for abdominal hernia repair has significantly reduced the rate of recurrence of the disease, but has led to the emergence of new, previously unknown complications, one of which is associated with mesh infection and the formation of fistulas caused by the presence of a foreign body in the wound. Prevention of infection of the implant, tactics for deep suppuration of a wound carrying a mesh is an important task of modern herniology, discussed in an article by Austrian surgeons.And although the concept of the possibility of preserving the mesh, strictly depending on the type of implanted material, seems to me very controversial, the work is based on a large number of observations and contains a number of nuances, important details in the work of a surgeon, which, in fact, make up our profession.

Competition of students’ works in preparation for the scientific-practical conference “Organizational Psychology: People and Risks”
At the moment, representatives of each profession are implementing the tasks of their work in new conditions.In connection with the pandemic and the introduction of a high alert regime, all activities can be divided into those that:
- are implemented remotely;
- are implemented as usual with the risk of being infected;
- are being implemented in a mode of increased workload – doctors, nurses.
Now more than ever, it is important to minimize the negative consequences of work in order to maintain its efficiency.
The purpose of the competition: to create a program of industrial gymnastics for representatives of the professions of the specified groups.
The order of submission of works: until April 23, 2020 until 23.55, the video story and presentation of the work are uploaded to the discussions of the Science ON FSN event. Works are uploaded from one representative of a group of participants (3-5 people), in accordance with the direction of training.

Abstract
Context: How athletes from different sports perform balance tests is not entirely clear. When assigning balance exercises to athletes involved in different sports, it may be important to consider differences in performance.
Goal: Compare the static and dynamic balance between student athletes competing or training in soccer, basketball and gymnastics.
Design: Quasi-experimental intergroup design. Independent variables included limb (dominant and non-dominant) and sport.
Location: University Sports Complex.
Patients or other participants: Thirty-four female volunteers who competed in football (n = 11), basketball (n = 11), or gymnastics (n = 12) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division I.
Intervention (s): To assess static balance, participants performed 3 stance options (double leg, one leg and tandem leg) on 2 surfaces (rigid and supple). To assess dynamic balance, participants performed multidirectional maximum pulls with one leg with one-sided support.

Results: Evaluation of the balance error The system error score for the gymnastics group was 55% lower than for the basketball group ( P = .01), and the Star Excursion Balance Test results in the football group were 7% higher than in basketball ( P = 0.04).

Athletic coaches often prescribe exercise in an attempt to improve the athlete’s posture control or balance and possibly reduce the risk of injury. One-legged balance tasks on increasingly challenging surfaces (for example, from a hard floor to an ankle disc) are examples of exercises that have improved athlete balance after ankle sprains. 1–3 Differences in ankle and knee proprioception between trained athletes and matched controls suggest that exercise by acting on sensorimotor systems may improve balance. 4 , 5 What seems to be lacking in this line of research is assessments of how athletes from different sports perform on balance tests. Knowing this, athletic trainers can more effectively target balance exercises to athletes in a variety of sports.
Posture control or balance can be defined statically as the ability to maintain a base with minimal movement and dynamically as the ability to perform a task while maintaining a stable position. 6 Factors affecting balance include sensory information from the somatosensory, visual and vestibular systems, and motor responses that affect coordination, joint range of motion (ROM), and strength. 7–10 Some evidence in the literature suggests that the superior balance among experienced athletes is largely the result of repetitive exercise that affects motor responses, rather than a greater sensitivity of the vestibular system. 11 Others argue that excellent balance is the result of training that affects a person’s ability to pay attention to appropriate proprioceptive and visual signals. 12 Although experts may disagree with the mechanism, research shows that changes in both sensory and motor systems affect balance.
Each sport is likely to require different levels of sensorimotor processes to perform skills and protect the neuromuscular system from injury.Gymnasts often perform jumps and acrobatic maneuvers, as well as static barefoot poses on surfaces of varying rigidity, many of their skills requiring great strength and sometimes excessive compatibility. 13 In contrast, basketball players often perform passes, throws and dribbles with their upper limbs wearing their shoes on flat, hard surfaces. Their skills require a lot of joint acceleration during jump landings and cut maneuvers. 14 Footballers often perform lower limb passes, throws and dribbles with or without spikes on variable turf. 15 The skill and environmental requirements of these aforementioned sports are likely to create various problems for the sensorimotor systems, which together can affect the balancing ability of trained athletes. To our knowledge, there are no studies comparing the balance performance of athletes competing in different sports. Therefore, our goal was to compare the static and dynamic balance between student athletes who are currently competing or training in soccer, basketball and gymnastics.We assumed that athletes involved in these sports would have different posture control. Understanding that athletes in a variety of sports control posture can help to understand whether athletic requirements affect balance and can help athletic trainers better prescribe balance exercises.
METHODS
Subjects
All female female athletes from 3 sports (soccer, basketball and gymnastics) at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I University were asked to volunteer to participate in this study.Thirty-four student athletes (football, n = 11; basketball, n = 11; gymnastics, n = 12) met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate. We selected female college students to better represent a population that exhibits higher rates of ligament injuries compared to male college athletes in soccer and basketball. 16 To be included in the study, participants had to currently compete in only one sport in the previous 3 years and not participate in a balance training program outside of their typical athletic training.Participants were excluded if they had a lower limb injury, vestibular problems (such as dizziness), vision problems (such as blindness in one eye), or concussion within the 12 weeks prior to the study. These exceptions were assessed by interviewing participants rather than physical tests. Participants signed an informed consent document approved by the university ethics committee (which also approved the study) and were asked to refrain from any exercise for 2 hours before testing.The average age of the participants and the length of the legs (mean of both limbs) were, respectively, 20.4 ± 1.1 years and 84.3 ± 2.9 cm for football, 21.6 ± 1.9 years and 94.8 ± 6.1 cm for basketball and 21.2 ± 1.7 years and 82.04 ± 4.0 cm for gymnastics.
Protocol
Participants visited the university sports complex for 1 test session, which included an assessment of static balance, dynamic balance and leg length. To estimate leg length, we used a tape measure to determine the distance (to the nearest millimeter) between the anterior superior iliac spine and the medial malleolus of the same leg. 17 Both legs were measured and the dominance of the limbs was determined by asking the participant which leg she preferred to hit the ball. Static balance and dynamic balance were then randomly assessed using the equipment and procedures described below.
Equipment
The static balance was estimated using the Balance Error Estimation System (BESS) described by Riemann et al. 18 The unstable surface was a 50x41x6 cm closed cell Airex Balance Pad foam (Alcan Airex AG, Sins, Switzerland).The stable surface was a low pile carpet. Dynamic balance was assessed using the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) described by Gribble and Hertel. 17 The test grid consisted of 8 lines, each 120 cm long, extending from a common point in 45 ° increments (), and was created with standard white sports tape applied to a hard textured tile surface. The middle of the net was marked with a small dot over which the athletes were asked to center the supporting leg during testing.The grid was laid out in 1 cm increments from the center outward to facilitate scoring during testing. Researchers reported high reliability of intertests (intraclass correlation coefficients = 0.78 to 0.96) and confidence coefficients ( r = 0.42 up to 0.79) for BESS 18 and high intraclass reliability for SEBT (intraclass correlation). coefficients = 0.78 to 0.96). 19 Although no validity ratios are available for SEBT, authors 20 provided evidence that SEBT is sensitive for screening a variety of musculoskeletal injuries.

Procedures
The BESS test procedures included 3 stance positions each on a stable and unstable surface for dominant and non-dominant limbs. Three stance positions: a two-legged stand with the feet together, a one-legged stand on the test limb with the opposite knee with an angle of flexion of approximately 90 °, and a tandem stand with the test limb’s foot in line and in front of the contralateral knee.limb (i.e., the heel of the test foot touches the toes of the back of the foot) Each position was held with eyes closed and hands on the thighs for 20 seconds, and the score was determined by recording errors. Included errors (1) eye opening; (2) raising the arms from the hip; (3) landing an unstable foot; (4) a step, bouncing, or other movement of the foot or feet in a stance; (5) lifting the forefoot or heel; (6) displacement of the hip by more than 30 ° of flexion or abduction; and (7) stay out of position for more than 5 seconds. 18 Different stances, surfaces and limb conditions resulted in 10 separate BESS tasks that were randomly assigned. The bipedal condition was not repeated for dominant and non-dominant limbs.
The SEBT protocol described by Gribble and Hertel 17 requires participants to maintain a stable stance on one leg with the test leg and reach the maximum distance with the other leg in each of the 8 directions (). Participants were asked to land without using an outstretched leg for support.If it was determined that the reach leg was used for support or the stable support was broken, the test was repeated. The test leg (dominant, non-dominant) and the order of reach were randomly selected before testing, and a 5-second rest with a position on two legs was required between reach attempts. Three trials were performed for each limb, with a rest period of 120 seconds between trials. Prior to testing, participants were given 180 seconds to familiarize themselves with the SEBT grid and were asked to practice reaching each direction.During this last period, 6 tests were carried out in most areas. Subjects were instructed to reach for the supporting leg when performing the test in posterior directions () Visual cues such as objects on the floor and people not participating in the study were removed from the test area to help reduce visual and auditory influences. Throughout testing, participants were not given any reward or further instruction. The reach was marked with chalk on the floor next to the athletic tape corresponding to the landing site.The distance from the center of the grid to the touch point was measured with a tape measure, the value was recorded with millimeter precision, and the chalk mark was removed after each achievement to reduce visual cues.
Data Analysis
All evaluations were carried out by the same tester. Error scores from the BESS test were summarized for each limb, and distance estimates (cm) for each direction of the SEBT grid were averaged across 3 trials and normalized to leg length (reach / leg length x 100 = percentage of leg length.length). 17 The normalized distances in each direction were then summed for both the dominant and non-dominant leg. We have summarized the values to reduce the number of statistical tests and minimize the bloat of the type I error.
Statistical design
The independent variables in this study were the sport (soccer, basketball, or gymnastics) and the limbs used during testing (dominant or non-dominant).Each dependent variable (errors and normalized distances) was examined for main effects and interactions by analysis of variance 3 (sports) × 2 (limbs) with repeated measures of limb factor. Subsequent multiple comparisons were made for the game factor. ANOVA was run twice, once for each dependent variable. The probability associated with type I error was set at 0.05 for all observations, and Scheffe’s conservative model was used for multiple comparisons to help control alpha bloat.We used SPSS (version 13.0; SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL) to analyze our data.
RESULTS
Central trend and spread measurements for BESS and SEBT data are provided in the file. No sports interactions between limbs were noted for either BESS (F 2.31 = 1.46, P = 0.25, partial η 2 = .09, 1 – β = 0.29) or SEBT (F 2.31 = 1.12, P = 0.34, partial η 2 = 0.07, 1 – β = 0.23).Likewise, no major effects were seen for the limb factor nor for BESS (F 1.32 = 0.028, P = 0.87, partial η 2 = 0.001, 1 – β = 0.05) or SEBT (F 1.32 = 2.86, P = 0.10, partial η 2 = 0.08, 1 – β = 0.37).

Main effects were observed for the sports factor for BESS (F 2.31 = 5.25, P = 0.01, partial η 2 = 0.25, 1 – β = 0.80) and SEBT (F 2.31 = 3.54, P = 0.04, partial η 2 = 0.20, 1 – β = 0.62). Multiple comparisons showed that BESS scores differed between basketball and gymnastics ( P = 0.01, effect size = 0.86). In addition, a difference between football and basketball was observed for the SEBT scores ( P = 0.04, effect size = 1.0). The BESS error rates for the gymnastics group were 55% lower than for the basketball group (), and the SEBT scores were 7% higher for the football group than for the basketball group ().

DISCUSSION
We hypothesized that the results of static and dynamic balance would be different for student athletes competing in different sports. Basketball players showed poorer static balance compared to gymnasts and poorer dynamic balance compared to soccer players. No differences were noted between gymnasts and football players.While the idea that participation in sports improves balance is not new, our research extends this knowledge to specific sports and suggests that specific sensorimotor problems, rather than general athletic performance, are important for the development of optimal balance.
Our soccer player static balance scores (12.5 ± 1.1) closely match the static balance scores reported by Riemann et al. 18 (12.2 ± 8.7), which included NCAA football, soccer, lacrosse, and fight.SEBT scores were more difficult to compare with data in the literature due to the different methods used to analyze the data (eg, normalized and non-normalized).
In our study, the statistical differences observed between sports may in part be related to the unique sensorimotor problems that occur in each sport; for example, gymnasts often practice fixed balance beam skills similar to those required in BESS. Consequently, gymnasts can develop increased attention to signals that alter balance performance, such as small changes in joint position and acceleration. 12 In contrast, basketball players rarely balance motionless on one leg and often pay attention to signals about the position of the ball and the player. Their static balance may have been less developed than that of the female gymnasts, as evidenced by the results of this study. In terms of dynamic balance, football players often perform movements on one leg outside of their support during passing, receiving and throwing, which may partly explain why their dynamic the balance was better than that of basketball players, although there is no direct evidence of this claim…. Since the static and dynamic balance scores between footballers and gymnasts did not differ, some sensorimotor problems may be common in the two sports, or it may be that BESS and SEBT were not sensitive enough to capture the differences.
Specific changes in sensorimotor systems as a result of sports are multifaceted. Some indirect evidence suggests that the likelihood of detecting a change in joint position (proprioception) increases after skill training 21 , and that learning to pay attention to biomechanical signals (eg, joint acceleration) may be the mechanism of this change. 12 Workouts that improve neuromuscular coordination, joint strength, and ROM are also likely mechanisms that lead to improved balance. 5 , 11 , 22 Although strength and ROM data were not available for our groups, ground reaction force data from previous researchers suggest that football players and gymnasts experience greater strength than basketball players, for some skill maneuvers…. 23–25 It is therefore entirely possible that balance scores differed between groups in our study simply due to differences in joint strength. It may be useful for future researchers to study certain components of balance (e.g., proprioception, vision, ROM for joints, and strength) in athletes involved in various sports to determine which sensorimotor systems are more influenced.
Clearly, balance training reduces the risk of certain types of musculoskeletal injuries, such as ankle sprains, especially if one or more balanced components (eg proprioception and articular ROM) are not optimal at the start.The literature seems to support this claim in that athletes in a variety of sports displayed fewer ankle sprains and other musculoskeletal injuries compared to controls after static and dynamic balance training. 26–28 Athletic trainers will find a variety of balance training programs that can be effective in improving balance, including one-legged balance exercises on increasingly challenging surfaces. 1-3
In addition to the knowledge that balancing training programs are effective, athletic coaches would benefit from the knowledge that athletes require more balance training to reduce musculoskeletal injuries. Since we have seen the worst balance scores in basketball players, and the worst balance scores may be a strong predictor of future ankle sprain, athletic coaches 29 may find it beneficial to assign more balance training to basketball players than to soccer players and gymnasts.This does not mean that footballers and gymnasts will not benefit from balance training, but that balance exercises may be more needed by basketball players.
The BESS and SEBT estimates can be considered the limitations of this study. Postural wobble variables from a strength platform have often been considered the “gold standard” for static balance, 18 , and while no gold standard has been defined for dynamic balance, more sophisticated methods such as the Dynamic Posture Control Index 30 and stabilization time. 31 Accordingly, there are many balance tests, so we have selected 2 tests that are reliable and which some believe are valid. 18 , 19 In practice, BESS and SEBT require minimal equipment and are clinically “friendly”, especially when conducted with fewer trials or with directions. 32 Given that we observed differences in the balance between athletes in the 2 sports, an additional application of this study could be that athletic trainers would use these tests on athletes in sports that were not tested to expedite the prescription of balance exercises. …
Within these constraints, it can be concluded that footballers and gymnasts did not differ in static and dynamic equilibrium on BESS or SEBT. In contrast, basketball players showed poorer static equilibrium compared to gymnasts and poorer dynamic equilibrium compared to soccer players.

One of the most important things you can do as a gymnast is to have a clear vision of your goals and dreams.This is important because it serves as a reminder of WHY you work so hard and helps motivate you when you start to lose steam or wonder why you put in so much effort when things seem hard. The gymnast has a long competitive season. Usually, motivation starts to wane in the middle of the season, if not earlier. Even if you are a highly motivated gymnast, the visualization board can remind you why you started and serve as an “uplifting chatter” when you really need it.It can also keep you motivated during the summer months as you learn new tricks and skills. It’s also true that a visualization board can help you focus on your goals for the year by serving as a daily reminder of what you want to improve.
You don’t need to be a high-level gymnast to create a visualization board! The visualization board is also important for amateur gymnasts. Even if you are not competing yet, you still have skills that you want to master or goals that you hope to achieve in gymnastics.Maybe you want to learn that cartwheel that your friends are making, or maybe you want to be able to walk on your hands without falling? What is a Vision Board?
A visualization board is a visual representation of images and words that describe your goals.It can be as small or large as you want. You can create it on cardboard, foam, heavy cardboard, or in your notebook. Some gymnasts even prefer to create them on their computer and print or set as desktop wallpaper, while others like to use a corkboard or magnetic board to attach their photos. Whatever the method, the goal is the same – to create one place that will remind you of all your goals and dreams for the year every day.
Why Create a Gymnastics Vision Board
Research has shown that people who regularly write down their goals and dreams achieve their goals at a significantly higher level than those who do not. In fact, according to research by Dr. Gail Matthews, professor of psychology at Dominican University in California:

“I always advise keeping a visualization board with images of your current goals,” says Lukin, who created her own board with photographs of medals awarded at the Beijing Olympics when she competed.She ended up winning five medals. “I’ve always done this because having this image helped me focus on what I wanted to achieve.”
In addition, in an interview with students of the University of Pennsylvania, Nastya told them how important it is to have a visualization board for achieving her Olympic medals. In the article, the author writes:
Before the Beijing Olympics, 18-year-old gymnast Nastya Lyukina placed three images on her visualization board: the Eiffel Tower, symbolizing the trip to France she wanted, BMW and the 2008 gold medal.

“Creating a visualization board is very important to me and my family.My mom taught us that looking at the visualization board will give us inspiration to continue to pursue the dreams that we had in our hearts, even if we couldn’t yet see the result with our own eyes. She told us that if we have faith, our dreams are will one day become our reality! »
It is clear that visualization boards are powerful tools for achieving goals. Both Nastya and Gabby have proven how important vision boards are to their success as gymnasts. How to Create a Gymnastics Vision Board
Now that you’ve learned how powerful a visualization board can be, let’s get started.Below we have outlined 7 steps to creating a vision board for gymnastics. Follow the instructions and complete each step in order. If you are a young gymnast, ask your parents to help you. If you are older, consider getting your gym friends together and throwing a “party” on the visualization board. If you’re a coach, consider hosting a visualization board night in the gym one weekend for all of your gymnasts. In fact, you can even create a group vision board with your teammates, like the 2013 University of Utah women’s gymnastics team.The possibilities are endless! The point is to make this activity fun and you look forward to completing it every year.
7 Steps to Creating a Gymnastics Visualization Board
Step 1. Decide on your vision and goals for the year.
It is always a good idea to have a render board at the beginning of a calendar year because for many it seems like a new start. But you can also do it at the beginning of the gymnastics season or ANY place throughout the year.Timing is not as important as the fact that you actually create your render board.
First, think about what you want to achieve this year. Maybe there is a new skill you want to master (like double full on the floor), something you want to improve (like your flexibility), or some big competition that you would like to qualify for (like , your state competition). There is nothing forbidden on your board of vision because it is YOURS and no one can tell you how big or small to dream.
Besides the list of goals, you should also think about how you want to FEEL this year. Maybe you want to feel more confident, or maybe you want gymnastics to be fun again. Maybe happiness is a feeling you want to experience, just like in gymnastics. It’s important to remember that the reason you want to achieve your goals and dreams in the first place is because you want to experience positive feelings such as happiness, joy, fun, and confidence.So why not focus on these good feelings every day, even BEFORE you reach those goals? This may seem like a reverse path to achieving your goals, but you will notice that when you start thinking about these positive feelings every day, you will begin to achieve your goals !!! It’s amazing how it works; vision boards are powerful tools!
Step 2. Decide what kind of paper you are going to use.
This helps you think about where you want to place your finished render board.If you want to hang it on the wall, find a piece of paper or a poster board that suits your space. If you want to place it on a table, choose a heavier foam board that is strong and can stand against a wall. If you have a gymnastics diary or tracker, you can create your visualization board on the front pages of this magazine so that you can review it daily as you write in your diary or track your skills. Where you place the visualization board is a personal decision. however, the goal is for you to see her EVERY DAY! So decide where you will place your render board and then find the paper that works for you.
Step 3. Collect gymnastics magazines and photographs.
Now that you have decided on the type of paper you will use, your next step is to collect gymnastics magazines and any other magazines from which you can cut words and images. If you do not have magazines or do not want to cut out of them, you you can find the images on your computer and print them. You can even ask your parents for their old magazines or newspaper, from which pictures and words can be cut.You can also print photos of you doing gymnastics or photos of you and your friends having fun. The idea is that when you look at these pictures and words, you feel GOOD. This visualization board should be fun and make you smile! If the photo doesn’t work for you, don’t add it. Again, it’s YOURS and will be unique to you, so make sure you don’t compare your render board to your friend’s board and add the same things as her.YOU do YOU! You can come up with ANYTHING you want. Spend some time looking through magazines and clipping out those pictures and words. If you can’t find the words you want, cut out individual letters and compose the words yourself.
Step 4. Determine the best placement of your images on the visualization board.
It’s time to put together the render board. Before gluing pictures and words together, be sure to lay the images on top of the paper first to find the best layout for your render board.Take some time to rearrange and play around with different arrangements. Place your most important goals in the middle of the board, where they will catch your eye. Some gymnasts like to cover all the white space on the poster, while others like to leave space between the pictures, again, the choice is yours!
Step 5: Glue everything.
Once you’ve decided on the best layout for your photos and words, you can glue everything together.You can use Elmer’s glue stick or Elmer’s glue (when using Elmer’s glue, be sure to apply a small amount so that the glue does not seep around the edges of the images!). Merge each photo one at a time. Do not remove all pictures before stitching, otherwise you will lose the layout!
Step 6: Decorate the vision board.
This is where the fun begins! Now you can spice up your render board with glitter glue and pens, pretty decorative tape, stickers, markers, or anything else you want to decorate your render board with.Have fun with it and get creative. If you love glitter, add more glitter! If you love stickers, drip them up! The sky is the limit!
Step 7: Hang the visualization board where you will see it every day!
Now that you’ve finished your render board, it’s time to enjoy it! Find the best place to hang or rest where you can see it every single day – you can put it on a table, hang it over your bed, or put it outside your bedroom door.Play around with different locations to see which one you like best. You can even take a photo of the finished render board and use it as wallpaper on your phone or tablet.
Again, the point is that you see your render board on a daily basis. As you look at the visualization board, take a few minutes to visualize yourself, achieving the goals and feelings that you put on the board. If you place your photo on a podium for 1st place, then imagine how you feel standing on that podium.If you put words like “happy” or “successful,” on your idea board, think about what those words really mean to you. If you chose the photo of the gymnast in the center of the split because you want to be more flexible this year, imagine that you are sitting in the split and how great it would be to feel at ease in your body while holding the split. Visualization and feeling MUST go together!
Don’t stop …
Now that you’ve created your gymnastics visualization board, who said you need to stop there ?! Why not create a visualization board for other non-gymnastics purposes in life?
Even after leaving competitive gymnastics, Nastya still uses boards to achieve her life goals.According to the article “The habit of artistic health improvement, the Olympic athlete Nastya Lyukin does every year”, Nastya says:
“What I have always done during training and continue to do now is that every New Year’s Eve I sit down and create a new visualization board for the year,” said Luukin Birdie. “I write down my goals, the things I want to achieve, the places I want to visit, etc. I also make it a fun project by adding motivational quotes, stickers – you’re never too old for that, right ?! – you call It.»
To make sure she sees her visualization board every morning, Luukin holds the artwork in front of her cosmetic mirror: “I think seeing your goals in front of you, rather than just remembering them in your mind, is a great way to stay motivated, especially at those days when you want to give up, ”she said.

No marks carry over from qualifying events to individual all-around and apparatus finals.
Men compete in six subjects: floor, horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar, while women compete in four subjects: vault, uneven bars, logs and floor.
Team competition
A team consists of a minimum of three gymnasts and a maximum of five – in each apparatus, no more than four gymnasts will compete with a team result calculated by adding the three best marks, known as the 5-4-3 format.
There are separate team competitions for men and women.
Individual all-around, finals
The top 18 gymnasts in the team competition who have competed in all subjects qualify for each of the men’s and women’s individual all-around finals, a maximum of two per country.
Finalists compete again with each apparatus, scoring only in the final round. The cumulative scores of all subjects in a subject determine the final rating.
Finals with items
The top eight athletes in each qualifying / team competition subject will qualify for the individual finals with a maximum of two subjects from each country.
Men’s items
Floor
Floor exercises are performed on a 12 x 12 m spring-loaded floor surrounded by a 1-meter protective strip. The surface is covered with a special wooden backing that provides both spring and shock absorption during takeoff and landing of athletes.Athletes have 70 seconds to complete an exercise that consists primarily of acrobatic elements in combination with other gymnastic elements such as strength and balance elements, flexibilities, handstands and choreographic combinations performed using the entire exercise area on the floor. After 60 seconds, a noise is heard, indicating to the gymnast that she has only 10 seconds left to complete the exercise.
Horse with pommel
A horse with a pommel of 1.6 m in length, 1.15 m in height and has two pommels (handles).The distance between the bows is adjustable from 40 cm to 45 cm.The athletes perform elements including work on one leg, movements, turns, swings to the handstand, and dismounts together in a routine with a continuous flow and alternating movements and positions of the grip across the width of the horse and on the handles.
Rings
The apparatus consists of two circular rings made of wood or synthetic material, attached to cables and suspended from a frame 2.8 m above the floor. Athletes perform a series of swings, strength and holding parts in approximately equal parts in their exercise, ending with an impressive dismount.
Vault
After gaining speed from the approach run of 25 m (maximum), the gymnasts take off from the springboard, pushing from the vault table with their arms then performing somersaults with turns trying to finish with a controlled and steady landing. To qualify and compete in the apparatus finals, gymnasts must perform two separate jumps from different groups: for example, in a different direction, in a different position or with a difference of at least ½ a revolution.
Parallel Bars
Parallel Bars are two 3.5 m long wooden planks that stand on a metal base 2 m above the ground. Athletes perform exercises that combine a change of handstand, swing movements and somersaults both above and below the bar, ending with a dismount, consisting of several somersaults with or without several turns.
Horizontal boom
This tall device is a steel rod (2.8 cm diameter, 2.4 m long) supported by two metal bases 2.8 m above the ground. The exercise should be a dynamic presentation with a fluid mix of swing, pivot and flight alternating between near and far from the bar using various hand grips to demonstrate the full potential of the apparatus. This exercise culminates in an explosive dismount with the aim of making a perfect landing.
women Apparatus
Vault
After gaining speed from the takeoff run on the approach of the launch being 25m, the gymnasts take off from the springboard, pushes out of the vault table with their hands, then perform somersaults with turns trying to finish with a controlled and stable landing.To qualify for the apparatus finals, gymnasts must complete two separate jumps from different groups.
Uneven rods
Uneven members consist of two members. The high bar is 2.5 meters from the floor and the low bar is 1.7 meters. Gymnasts swing in both directions and from bar to bar, performing relaxing and pivoting movements through the handstand and into the handstand above and below the bar. They aim to complete the exercise with a spectacular, controlled dismount.
Beam
The balance beam is 5 m long and 1.25 m above the ground and only 10 cm wide. Gymnasts have up to 90 seconds to perform a combination of acrobatic skills, jumps, turns and dance moves. The judges look at the artistic performance, composition and choreography, as well as the rhythm and tempo of the gymnast’s exercise. After 1 minute 20 seconds, a noise is heard, indicating to the gymnasts that they have only 10 seconds left to complete the exercise.
Floor
Floor exercises are performed on a spring-loaded floor of 12 x 12 m.The surface is covered with a special wooden backing that provides both spring and shock absorption during takeoff and landing. The gymnasts present their exercises to music, combining dance with acrobatic skills, using the entire floor area. Judges look for a good interpretation of the music and artistry with a personal flair.
Regulation
Competition Area
At international competitions in artistic gymnastics, a podium with a height of 80 cm to 110 cm is used.The devices are placed on this podium and stabilized on suitable nests at certain distances between them and with a safety margin from the edge of the podium in accordance with the Technical Regulations in FIG.
Judging / Scoring
A panel of eight judges plus a supervisor will preside over each exercise during the qualifying phase and the all-around final, while a panel of nine judges and a supervisor will evaluate the exercises in the final on apparatus.
Qualifying and Team Finals: 4 x Execution, 2 x Difficulty, 2 x Control Judges
All-Around Finals: 4 x Technique, 2 x Difficulty, 2 x Control Judges
Subject finals: 5 x Execution, 2 x Difficulty, 2 x Control Judges
The Difficulty Panel, consisting of two judges, will calculate a “D” score based on the content of the exercise.
An Execution Panel of four or five judges is responsible for the “E” score, which is determined by the gymnast’s execution of the exercise.The “E” score is calculated by discarding the highest and lowest scores from the E judges and averaging the two or three remaining scores.
The other two members of the judging panel are reference judges – part of the
Reference Judges System
, which was introduced to create an automatic correction system in case of any problems with the “E” score.

Uniform
Men wear sleeveless gymnastics leotards and shorts for the floor and arch, and long gymnastics stirrups with leotards for the remaining four apparatus.Women should always wear a swimsuit or jumpsuit.
Hand protection
On certain apparatus, horizontal bars, uneven bars or rings, gymnasts wear special leather hand guards to enhance grip and protect the skin.
Chalk
Athletes use powdered magnesium carbonate (chalk) to keep hands and feet dry and maintain a good grip.
Sports Jargon
- Olympic Order: International Competition Order as determined by the FIG.Olympic order for women – vault, parallel bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Men compete in the following order: floor exercise, horseback shooting, ring exercises, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.
- Dismount: The act of leaving the object and the skill used for this.
- Saltos: Somersaults or somersaults where the feet are raised above the head and the body rotates around the axis of the hips.
- Twisting: Not to be confused with somersaults, twisting occurs when the gymnast rotates around the longitudinal axis of the body, defined by the spine.
Rhythmic gymnastics
In the UK, only women can compete in rhythmic gymnastics and competitions include team events; Individual all-around and finals with individual objects in a hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon.
All exercises are performed to music, the time limit for individual exercises is 1.15-1.30 minutes. Team competition
All gymnasts compete in a team competition, the score of which is calculated by adding the top 10 results of the three competing athletes. Each athlete may perform a maximum of four exercises and no more than one with each apparatus (i.e., a maximum of 12 exercises per team).
Individual All-Around Final
The 16 highest-ranked athletes in the team qualify for the Individual All-Around Final, a maximum of two from each country.Two gymnasts will be selected as backups in the event of refusal by any of the qualifying competitors.
Apparatus Finals
The eight highest rated athletes in each apparatus in the Team Competition will qualify for the Individual Finals with a maximum of two apparatus per country.
Rhythmic gymnastics Apparatus
Basic groups of body movements (jumps, leaps, rotations and balance) are now the same for all objects of the subject.
Hoop
The hoop can be made of plastic or wood and have a diameter of 80–90 cm; its minimum weight is 300 g. Technical groups for the hoop are rolling on the body or on the floor, rotating around the arm or other parts of the body, throwing and catching and passing through the hoop. Object handling includes swings, circles and eights.
Ball
The ball is made of rubber or soft plastic. Its diameter is 18-20 cm, and its weight is at least 400 g.Technical groups for the ball include throwing and catching, bouncing and rolling on the body or on the floor. Controls include jolts, swings, circles, figure eight or rolling over, the movements should be fluid and sensual.
Clubs
Clubs are brightly colored and made of wood or synthetic material, bottle-shaped and 40-50 cm long and weighing at least 150 g. Gymnasts perform rotations, circles, throws and asymmetric movements that require coordination and precision of the clockwork …
Ribbon
Ribbon made of satin is at least 6 m long and 4-6 cm wide.The stick is usually made of wood, bamboo, plastic or fiberglass, has a diameter of 1 cm and a length of 50 to 60 cm.Technical groups ribbons – “snakes”, spirals, throws and catches, small tossing. 7 Tips for a Safe and Successful Strength Training Program
Strength or resistance training challenges your muscles with stronger than normal opposing forces, such as pushing off a wall, lifting a dumbbell, or pulling on a resistance band.By gradually increasing weight or increasing resistance, the muscles become stronger. This exercise increases muscle mass, tones muscles, and strengthens bones. It also helps you maintain the strength you need for your daily activities – picking up groceries, climbing stairs, getting out of a chair, or rushing to the bus.
The current national physical activity code recommends strengthening exercises for all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, chest, abdomen, shoulders and arms) at least twice a week.One set – usually 8 to 12 repetitions of the same movement – per workout is effective, although some evidence suggests that two to three sets may be better. It takes your muscles at least 48 hours to recover between strength training sessions.
These seven tips will help you keep your strength training safe. and are effective.
- Heat and cool for 5-10 minutes. Walking is a great way to warm up; stretching is a great way to cool off.
- Focus on form, not weight. Correctly align your body and smoothly perform each exercise. Poor shape can cause injury and stunt growth. When looking at a strength training regimen, many experts suggest starting with no weight or very light weight. Concentrate on slow, smooth ascents and equally controlled descents while isolating the muscle group.
- Working at the right pace helps you stay in control rather than jeopardizing your momentum gains.For example, while lowering the kettlebell, count to three, hold, then count to three while lifting it to the starting position.
- Pay attention to your breathing while exercising. Exhale as you work with resistance, lifting, pushing, or pulling; inhale as you release.
- Continue to train your muscles while slowly increasing weight or resistance. The weight that is right for you depends on the exercise. Choose a weight that fatigues the target muscle or muscles with the last two reps while maintaining good shape.If you can’t do the last two reps, choose a lighter weight. When the exercise seems too easy to do, add weight (about 1 to 2 pounds for the arms, 2 to 5 pounds for the legs) or add another set of reps to the workout (up to three sets). that you should be able to do all the reps in good shape, and the target muscles should feel fatigued by the last two.
- Stick to your routine – Exercise all major muscles in your body two or three times a week.You can do one full-body strength training two or three times a week, or you can split the strength training into an upper and lower body. In this case, be sure to do each component two or three times a week.
- Give your muscles a break. Strength training causes tiny tears in muscle tissue. These tears are not harmful, but they are important: the muscles grow stronger as the tears grow together. Before your next strength training session, always allow your muscles to recover at least 48 hours.
