I chose Gundersen because of the great environment and experience a CNA gets here. Not only have I learned valuable skills, I have met amazing coworkers. The Calgary Roughnecks are a professional team in the Western Conference of the National Lacrosse League. 3-time NLL champion 2004, 2009, 2019. They play their matches at the Scotiabank Saddledome arena. The team name “drillers” comes from the nickname of workers (namely assistant drillers) employed on drilling rigs in the Alberta oil and gas industry. Fans affectionately call the team “Vyshkari” (rigger – rigger). Vyshkar Derrick was the team’s mascot until 2012, after which he was replaced by the less brutal honey badger Howie.
The Roughnecks were founded in 2001. The NLL announced that it has awarded the extended franchise to a group of four owners led by Brad Banister. The idea for the team came up a year earlier during the famous Canada Day lacrosse tournament in Calgary, where it was suggested that professional lacrosse could work in Calgary. Within eight weeks of Banister contacting the league, Calgary were announced as the tenth franchise in the NLL, valued at $500,000.
The drillers finished their first season with 4 wins and 12 losses. In their second season, they improved their results 9-7. But in the third season of 2003-2004 they won their first NLL Cup. In the final, Calgary defeated Buffalo in front of 19,289 spectators. The Calgary Roughnecks went on to win the NLL Cup twice more, in 2009 against the New York Titans and again in 2019 against the Buffalo Bandits.
In a landmark event in 2011, Banister announced on June 14, 2011 that the Calgary Flames had acquired the team, becoming the third NHL franchise to operate an NLL team after the Colorado Mammoth (“Colorado Avalanche”) and the Buffalo Bandits ( “Buffalo Sabres”).
