Gauging Interest: The First Step in Starting a Lacrosse Club
Before diving into the logistics of starting a lacrosse club, it’s crucial to assess the level of interest in your community. This initial step can make or break your efforts, so it’s important to approach it strategically.
Effective Methods to Measure Lacrosse Interest
- Organize informal meetings after school
- Collaborate with existing local sports programs
- Create a compelling brand and logo
Organizing informal meetings after school provides a direct way to communicate your vision and gather contact information from potential players and volunteers. These meetings offer an opportunity to share information about lacrosse and conduct quick surveys to gauge interest levels.
Reaching out to coaches and volunteers from other local sports programs, especially those with non-conflicting seasons, can help spread the word about your initiative. This approach can give you a head start on recruitment when the time comes.
Creating a strong brand identity and logo can generate excitement and lend credibility to your nascent program. A well-designed brand can attract players who want to be part of something new and exciting, while also aiding in fundraising and sponsorship efforts.
Financial Planning: Budgeting and Securing Funds for Your Lacrosse Club
Establishing a solid financial foundation is critical for the success and sustainability of your lacrosse club. Understanding the costs involved and developing a realistic budget are key steps in this process.
Estimating Costs for a Lacrosse Program
According to US Lacrosse, the average cost per player ranges from $350-$780 for males and $115-$310 for females. These costs typically cover:
- Field time
- Transportation
- Coaches’ salaries
- Officials’ fees
- Practice equipment and tools
- Uniforms
- Website development and maintenance
- Marketing and promotional materials
When setting your registration fee, it’s important to take all these factors into account. Additionally, consider investing in soft stick equipment for introductory sessions, which can help gauge serious interest among potential players.
Strategies for Securing Finances
Beyond registration fees, there are several strategies to secure additional funding for your club:
- Seek local business sponsorships
- Organize fundraising campaigns
- Apply for grants from lacrosse organizations
Many local businesses are often eager to support youth sports programs. Offer incentives such as logo placement on uniforms or website recognition to attract sponsors. Fundraising campaigns can also tap into community support for your program.
Creating a Sustainable Budget
When developing your budget, consider the total number of expected athletes and the registration fee you plan to charge. It’s crucial to plan for at least two seasons to ensure long-term sustainability. Careful budgeting helps prevent overcharging athletes while maintaining financial stability.
Official Registration: Joining the US Lacrosse Community
Once you’ve established your financial plan, the next step is to officially register your lacrosse team with US Lacrosse. This registration process offers several benefits:
- Validates your program
- Provides a Certificate of Liability for insurance purposes
- Grants access to resources and support from the national organization
Many facilities require proof of insurance, which you can obtain through your US Lacrosse membership. This official recognition can also lend credibility to your program when seeking sponsors or recruiting players.
Building Your Team: Recruiting Players and Coaches
With your foundation in place, it’s time to focus on building your team. Recruiting both players and coaches is crucial for the success of your lacrosse club.
Strategies for Player Recruitment
- Host open tryouts or skills clinics
- Leverage social media and local community platforms
- Partner with schools and youth organizations
- Offer “Bring a Friend” incentives to current players
Hosting open tryouts or skills clinics provides an opportunity for potential players to experience the sport firsthand. These events can help identify talent and generate excitement about your program.
Utilizing social media platforms and local community boards can help spread the word about your new lacrosse club. Share updates, photos, and information about upcoming events to attract interested players and their families.
Finding and Developing Coaches
Quality coaching is essential for the growth and success of your lacrosse program. Consider these approaches to finding and developing coaches:
- Reach out to former lacrosse players in your community
- Partner with local colleges or universities with lacrosse programs
- Offer coaching clinics or workshops to develop new coaches
- Implement a mentorship program for aspiring coaches
Developing a strong coaching staff not only improves the quality of your program but also helps ensure its long-term sustainability.
Equipment and Facilities: Gearing Up for Success
Securing appropriate equipment and facilities is a critical component of starting a lacrosse club. Understanding the essential needs and exploring cost-effective options can help you manage this aspect of your program effectively.
Essential Equipment for a New Lacrosse Team
- Lacrosse sticks (both for offense and defense)
- Protective gear (helmets, gloves, pads)
- Balls
- Goals
- Practice cones and other training aids
While players are typically responsible for their personal equipment, having some club-owned equipment can be beneficial, especially for newcomers to the sport. Consider investing in a set of soft sticks for introductory clinics or try-out sessions.
Securing Suitable Facilities
Finding appropriate playing and practice facilities can be challenging for new lacrosse clubs. Explore these options:
- Partner with local schools or parks departments
- Investigate multi-use sports complexes
- Consider unconventional spaces like converted industrial areas
When negotiating facility use, be prepared to provide proof of insurance and adhere to any specific regulations or requirements set by the facility managers.
Creating a Strong Brand Identity for Your Lacrosse Club
A compelling brand identity can set your lacrosse club apart and create a sense of belonging among players, parents, and supporters. Here are key elements to consider when developing your club’s brand:
Visual Brand Elements
- Logo design
- Color scheme
- Uniform design
- Merchandise (t-shirts, hats, etc.)
Your logo and color scheme should be distinctive and memorable, reflecting the spirit and values of your club. Consider incorporating elements that represent your local community or the history of lacrosse.
Brand Messaging and Values
Develop a clear mission statement and set of core values for your club. These should guide your decision-making and be communicated consistently across all platforms and interactions.
Online Presence
Create a professional website and maintain active social media accounts to engage with your community and showcase your brand. Regularly update these platforms with news, player highlights, and upcoming events.
Long-Term Planning: Ensuring Sustainability for Your Lacrosse Club
To ensure the longevity and success of your lacrosse club, it’s crucial to develop a comprehensive long-term plan. This plan should address various aspects of club management and growth.
Key Components of a Long-Term Lacrosse Club Plan
- Financial projections and budgeting
- Player development pathways
- Coaching education and advancement
- Facility and equipment needs
- Community engagement strategies
- Expansion plans (additional teams or age groups)
Regularly review and update your long-term plan to ensure it remains aligned with your club’s goals and the changing landscape of youth sports.
Building Partnerships for Sustainable Growth
Developing strong partnerships can contribute significantly to the long-term success of your lacrosse club. Consider fostering relationships with:
- Local schools and youth organizations
- Other sports clubs in your area
- Lacrosse equipment suppliers
- Local businesses for sponsorships
- Community leaders and influencers
These partnerships can provide valuable resources, support, and opportunities for growth as your club evolves.
Navigating Challenges: Overcoming Obstacles in Starting a Lacrosse Club
Starting a lacrosse club inevitably comes with challenges. Being prepared to address these obstacles can help ensure the success of your program.
Common Challenges in Establishing a Lacrosse Club
- Limited awareness or understanding of lacrosse in your community
- Competition from established sports programs
- Financial constraints
- Lack of experienced coaches or officials
- Difficulty securing suitable playing facilities
Strategies for Overcoming Obstacles
To address these challenges, consider implementing the following strategies:
- Conduct educational clinics or demonstrations to introduce lacrosse to your community
- Highlight the unique benefits of lacrosse compared to other sports
- Develop creative fundraising initiatives and seek diverse funding sources
- Implement a coach and official training program
- Build relationships with local facility managers and explore unconventional venue options
By anticipating and proactively addressing these challenges, you can increase the likelihood of success for your new lacrosse club.
Measuring Success: Evaluating and Improving Your Lacrosse Club
As your lacrosse club grows and evolves, it’s important to regularly assess its performance and identify areas for improvement. Implementing a system for measuring success can help guide your decision-making and ensure continued growth.
Key Performance Indicators for Lacrosse Clubs
- Player retention rates
- Team performance in competitions
- Financial sustainability
- Community engagement levels
- Player skill development
- Coach satisfaction and retention
Regularly track these indicators and use the data to inform your club’s strategies and decision-making processes.
Gathering Feedback for Continuous Improvement
Implement systems to gather feedback from various stakeholders, including:
- Players
- Parents
- Coaches
- Volunteers
- Community members
Use surveys, focus groups, or regular check-ins to collect this valuable input. Analyzing this feedback can help you identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement in your lacrosse club.
Adapting to Change and Embracing Innovation
The sports landscape is constantly evolving, and successful lacrosse clubs must be prepared to adapt. Stay informed about new training techniques, equipment innovations, and changes in league structures or rules. Be open to implementing new ideas that can enhance your club’s performance and appeal.
By focusing on continuous improvement and adapting to change, you can ensure that your lacrosse club remains vibrant and successful for years to come.
How to Start a Lacrosse Club
Lacrosse is a growing sport, offering nearly all ages and skill levels an opportunity to play. Although, with so much demand there has to be enough supply to match it. You can help continue the growth of the sport by learning how to start a lacrosse club in your community.
Starting lacrosse program may seem like a daunting task on first thought, but by following our 4 Steps to Success you’ll be well on your way to fostering a new generation of future lacrosse players.
Step #1: Gauge Lacrosse Interest Levels in Your Area
Being able to commit to a whole lacrosse season is no small task. There are many things on the checklist that need to be done before you able to create your team. Most importantly you need to gauge the interest level of players, coaches and volunteers in your area. Without them, the club won’t be able to function properly.
There are a few easy routes that you can take to help you gauge the interest levels:
- Hold informal meetings after school – By holding an informal meeting after school, you’ll be able to speak directly to the attendees about your mission in bringing a lacrosse team to your local area. We recommend you share some information about the sport, and also to take a quick survey. This will help to collect some contact information from those who are interested in either playing or volunteering/coaching.
- Ask other local sporting programs for help – By asking coaches and volunteers from other sports in your local area, preferably ones whose seasons does not conflict with the lacrosse season, you’ll be able to quickly get the word out about your mission to your area and help secure you a head start on recruiting when the time comes.
- Create a logo and brand – Creating a brand and logo not only can help with credibility, but it can also breathe excitement and realism into the program. Often times players want to be a part of something new and exciting and a strong brand will only help to convey that message. A strong brand and logo can also help you when attempting to raise funds or get sponsorships,

Step #2: Assess Costs, Secure Lacrosse Team Finance and Budget
Creating and financing a lacrosse program can be a very challenging task. With lots of upfront and hidden costs, not having a manageable budget can be deadly to the success of your program. Below you’ll find a few tips on how you can realistically manage these costs.
- Assessing Costs – US Lacrosse estimates the average cost for a player ranges somewhere in the area of $350-780 for males and $115-310 for females. Most of these costs boil down to field time, transportation, coaches, officials, practice lacrosse equipment and tools, uniforms, a website and marketing/promotions. We recommend taking all of these factors into account when you set your registration fee.
Although the club isn’t necessarily required to provide equipment, we recommend that you invest in some soft stick equipment. The soft stick program can be very helpful in the early stages to help you weed out the athletes who are serious interested in playing during the season and the athletes who aren’t quite sure.
- Securing Finances – Besides simply setting the registration fee, there are a few things you can do to help secure more financing for your club. Many local businesses around your area would likely love to sponsor youth sports programs and help them succeed. We recommend getting in contact with a few businesses in your area and seeing if they would be interested in sponsoring your club. You can give them many incentives to do so such as offering a logo spot on your uniforms, a spot on your website and much more. Another good strategy is to run a fundraising campaign. Just like the local businesses in your area, there are a ton of people who would love to help your club get off the ground and donate to your program.
- Budgeting – After taking into account all of the potential costs and fees of running your program successfully, we recommend creating a budget based around the total number of athletes you expect to register and the amount you expect to charge them. Also, it’s a good idea to remember that long-term planning is critical for your program’s success and sustainability, so we recommend attempting to budget for at least two-seasons worth of play.
All in all, there are many ways to help finance the club, just ensure you stay inside of your budget and don’t over charge the athletes.
Step #3 – Officially Register Your Lacrosse Team
Once you build your financial plan, you should be ready to officially register your lacrosse team with a US Lacrosse Membership. Doing so not only validates your program, but it allows you print off a Certificate of Liability to show proof of insurance, which many facilities require to see before you can access their fields. After registering your teams, you will then have to manage a personal group through US Lacrosse and require that all players and coaches purchase an annual membership in US Lacrosse as well.
- Create a website – a website will give parents and potential players all the information they need about your mission, schedules, necessary forms and most importantly, the registration process. Your website will be the one-stop shop for all things lacrosse for your team.
Setting up a website can be a great way to build credibility for your program, manage administrative tasks like scheduling and payment collection, and promote your teams in future seasons.
Never built a website before? Try a simple website builder made for sports like Jersey Watch
- Create a Background Check Policy – We also recommend that you run a quick background check on any potential coaches or volunteers to verify they are qualified to interact with young athletes. A quick background check can help you confirm their identity and verify a clean criminal record which is very important for the athlete’s safety. You can learn more about creating a background check policy.
Step #4 – Create a Lacrosse League or Find One to Join
After gauging interest, budgeting for your season, and registering with US Lacrosse you’ll need to find a league and tournaments to participate in. Below are some tips that would be helpful to consider as you schedule your season.
- Join a local lacrosse league – Getting in touch with lacrosse leagues in your surrounding area would be the best way to secure competition for your program. Often times an established league will already have field locations, referees, potential coaches and volunteers at their disposal, saving you a ton of time from having to construct that infrastructure all by yourself. You can use the US Lacrosse Chapter site to help put you in contact with other programs around your area.
- Contact your local youth centers – In the case that there are no lacrosse leagues in your area, you can get in contact with your local park and recreations program, boy & girls club or YMCA. By creating a partnership, you could get the word out about your new lacrosse program much quicker and likely already have a solid infrastructure in place to build off of.
- Create your own league – Although creating your own league is always an option if there are no other foreseeable options in your surrounding area, doing so would require a ton of work and communication with like-minded individuals. We recommend attempting to avoid this scenario if you’re looking for the smoothest/quickest upstart.
Help Expand the Growth and Love of Lacrosse with Your Community
Setting up a new lacrosse program doesn’t need to be a painful process. Running your own team takes a lot of hard work and planning but spreading your love for lacrosse to young athletes in your area can be a very fun and rewarding venture.
Who knows? One day you may end up being the reason why one of your athletes received a scholarship to college.

6 Ways to Grow Your Lacrosse Team • Hudl Blog
Use this expert advice to start or expand a lacrosse team — even if you’re in a region where the sport is still up-and-coming.
Lacrosse may be the fastest-growing team sport in the U.S., but it can be challenging to start or grow a team in a region where the game hasn’t reached peak popularity.
“Lacrosse is a budding sport in the Midwest,” said Kyle McGuire, lacrosse coach at Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago. “2018 was the first year that it was an official, state-sanctioned sport in Illinois.”
Adding lacrosse is a great opportunity to expand sport offerings at your school. Instead of waiting for people to catch on, use this advice from lacrosse pros to generate interest in your team.
1. Increase visibility with video.
“Video is so important,” said Jordan MacIntosh, player for the Georgia Swarm and Dallas Rattlers. “A lot of times, people have no idea what lacrosse is. They see kids walking around with those weird-looking sticks and wonder, ‘What sport is that?’”
When people see lacrosse in action, they’re drawn in by its physicality and fast-paced play. In addition to sparking interest, video helps players new to the sport learn how to play.
“If you’re starting a program, get film and show it to kids,” Mike Murphy, Penn lacrosse coach, said. “Then film them playing and show that to them. Embrace the interest and use it as a teaching tool.”
2. Attract players with social media.
The biggest clubs already use social media content to grow their brand. They’re active where their audience is.
“Kids want to be in that video on Instagram or that picture on Twitter,” MacIntosh said. “You’re trying to attract kids where they spend their time.”
Share the positive things happening in your program—or if you’re still getting started, share lacrosse content from college and professional teams that will inspire potential players in your area.
3. Use pro teams to spark interest.
Murphy thinks televised games have contributed to lacrosse’s increased popularity—the more people who see the sport played, the more interest there is.
He advises bringing college teams to play in the area or traveling to see professional teams’ games. In summer 2019, the Premier Lacrosse League will be touring in the hopes of bringing more attention to the sport.
Local media could also help your team or club gain momentum. Since lacrosse is trending nationally, reporters in your area may be attracted to a story about the local interest. Reach out to TV stations and papers and it could result in a feature for your team. (Check out these tips to get started.)
4. Fight misconceptions.
A huge misconception about lacrosse is that it’s expensive to start and play—but the cost of entry is less than people think.
MacIntosh recommends educating parents with the help of the US Lacrosse site, which provides a comprehensive guide to finding clubs and teams, what costs to expect, and what players need to get started.
McGuire’s crafted an entire presentation geared toward new players and their families.
“You’ll run into parents who are like, ‘This is awesome, but I have no idea what I’m really watching here,’” McGuire said. “On our freshman team, we have a Lacrosse 101 PowerPoint that we give out the first day—these are the rules, here’s what you can yell and what you can’t. Things you can expect on the game field. We’re always educating the lacrosse community out here.”
5. Get your players noticed.
As lacrosse gains popularity, the pool of recruitable players only gets bigger. And if you’re coaching in a region where lacrosse is still a growing sport like McGuire, video is key for showcasing players to colleges.
“I think it’s a necessity for these kids to have a highlight tape,” McGuire said. “For a Midwest kid, video is a nice way to be able to share those highlights. And that lets that coach do a little bit better job of recruiting that player or feeling comfortable in the player they’re recruiting. I think that was a huge hurdle for kids from non-traditional areas in lacrosse.”
And as a college coach, video is essential to recruiting. “When I hear about a kid, one of the first places I look for film is Hudl,” Murphy said.
6. Focus on player improvement.
The key to taking players to the next level? Practice. While it’s tempting to focus on playing games, Murphy said it’s more important to spend time working on the game.
At Penn, he’s made daily improvement the goal for the lacrosse team, and he recommends high school and club coaches do the same.
“For any coaches out there, the more they can do to focus on the improvement of players, the better,” Murphy said. “A product like Hudl can be instrumental—you’re showing kids what they’re doing on film can help them understand their technique.”
McGuire wants his team to focus on improving throughout the season. “We know that we’re going to have some young kids coming to this school that might not have the lacrosse IQ or some of the background that is needed to be really successful on a varsity level,” he said. “But as long as those kids’ IQ and the speed of lacrosse that we’re playing is trending in that upward direction coming into May, then that’s how we view our success.
“It’s not really about wins and losses. It’s really about the quality of the wins are you getting, and how quality you’re playing when you get those losses.”

Three Rivers Lacrosse Club
Our Coyote History begins back in the Spring of 2004….
After being turned down by their school district to start a lacrosse club, two high school juniors, determined to play lacrosse in the Tri-Cities, sent a grant request application to the US Lacrosse Association with hopes of starting their own lacrosse team.
Months later in January 2005, after little thought about even having a chance of winning the grant, one of the boys’ mother received a phone call. It was from a trucking company requesting confirmation for the address of where $8,000 worth of lacrosse equipment would be delivered! The Lance Holden Memorial Grant, the single largest grant that the US Lacrosse Association awarded, had been won! This grant provided enough equipment and gear to fully equip a lacrosse team of 20 players. With the help of their neighbor, a former Duke lacrosse club player who agreed to coach, and through word of mouth, 19 boys and 1 girl began practice in March of 2005.
After the first season, recognizing the growth potential of lacrosse in the Tri-Cities and Eastern Washington, parents of team members began the process of organizing a non-profit club from which many teams, both boys and girls, youth through high school, could evolve. After months of paperwork and meetings with a lawyer, who graciously offered his services pro-bono, 3Rivers Lacrosse Club was realized in March 2006.
Now, 17+ years after those two determined juniors started the lacrosse ball rolling, 3Rivers Lacrosse is home to over 150+ players, 4 boys teams in grades 1-8 and 4 girls teams in grades 1-12. Lacrosse in the Tri-Cities has grown from 1 lacrosse club to 7, with 3 youth lacrosse clubs and 4 high school lacrosse clubs.
Thanks to all the parents, coaches and players who, over the past 17 years, continue to dedicate their time, skills and services to build up the great sport of lacrosse in our community. 3Rivers Lacrosse continues to support, encourage and promote the growth of lacrosse in the Tri-Cities, Washington area, while upholding our Code of Conduct and honoring this great sport we love.

90,000 Toronto is a money making machine. And the Stanley Cups don’t need
A business empire began with a hockey club.
Hockey “Toronto” for many years did not go to the playoffs, the last time won the Stanley Cup 50 years ago, was at the very bottom of the NHL standings, but still at home games always collects sold out. And this is with perhaps the most expensive tickets in the league – an average of $ 120.
Last season, Toronto made a profit of $ 94 million (the third result of the season), and over the past five, the club has brought its owners $ 379 million (the second highest in the NHL).Even with the wildest failures, the team is still profitable. It so happened that the owners of the NHL club also own basketball and football Toronto. Even if the viewer does not like hockey, but goes to basketball, he still actually sponsors Maple Leaves. Hockey Toronto is owned by MLSE. When all the major sports leagues are counted, the organization received $ 160 million in revenue last year and $ 469 million over the past four years, according to Forbes. This is without taking into account the Canadian football club, information about which is closed.
60 YEARS OLD TORONTO OWNERS WANTED TO LEAVE HOCKEY
The Toronto Hockey Club was founded as Toronto St. Patrick’s, but nine years later, in 1927, it was bought for $ 200,000 by Conn Smythe , who had previously built the New York Rangers franchise. During the Great Depression, the Smythe family, almost without suffering from the crisis, decided at their own expense to build a new arena in Toronto. The idea was that residents of the city would see an outlet in Toronto and go to hockey to temporarily forget about their problems.
At the same time, MLGL was created, where Smythe transferred all his assets. Smythe’s plan succeeded – 80 years ago, Toronto’s average attendance exceeded 10,000. In 1961, Smythe sold 90% of his shares to three businessmen, one of whom was his son. Since then, the sporting expansion of MLGL has begun – now representatives of all major leagues in North America play in Toronto, with the exception of the NFL, which never thought about creating a club in Canada.

The new management increased its assets by creating clubs in the lower leagues. Of these, only one remained in the possession of the company – the Toronto Marlies from the AHL. In the 1970s, MLGL executives moved beyond the hockey market to become active in baseball and lacrosse. At the same time, the company began to consider the purchase of a basketball club – there were agreements with the Buffalo Braves club to hold several matches in Toronto to “probe” the interest of citizens in the NBA.
But MLGL was unable to acquire Buffalo due to financial disagreements. As a result, the club was moved to San Diego, and from there to Los Angeles. Nearly 50 years later, the Buffalo Braves continue to play in the NBA as the Los Angeles Clippers. The company also tried to acquire the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks, both times without success.
In 1996 MLGL was renamed MLSE – Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment. At that time, the Smythe family had almost no influence on the board of directors of the company, which for a long time wanted to sell it more profitably. In 2012, the “Canadian deal of the century” took place – two of the country’s largest communication giants – Rogers Communication and Bell Company – bought 75% of MLSE shares for $ 1.32 billion.
BASKETBALL CLUB IS MORE EXPENSIVE TO HOCKEY
A new era in the history of MLSE began in 1997, when the management of the hockey club was still able to expand their business at the expense of basketball. The NHL club was going to move to a new arena, a record $ 265 million for Canada was spent on its construction.MLSE understood that concerts and hockey alone would pay off the palace for a long time. Therefore, one more “neighbor” was needed, bringing in money.
As a result, in 1994, the NBA decided to open up new markets for itself and two Canadian clubs, the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies, entered the league. In the first three years of existence, both teams were deeply unprofitable, the NBA was criticized for this adventure. The management of the hockey club was interested in acquiring the Raptors, and in 1997 the basketball players joined the MLSE.

The long-term assumption that basketball will sooner or later bring in a lot of money has proven correct. With each season, the NBA TV ratings in both the US and Canada have grown, and attendance has increased. Now the basketball club brings in more than 70 million in profits annually. MLSE is now also making money off of the city’s black and Hispanic populations who don’t really follow hockey.
But this was not always the case: a few years ago, basketball players could not bring even 10 million in profit. Everything changed after the signing of a new contract between the NBA and the leading US TV companies. Forbes now estimates the value of a basketball club is even higher than that of a hockey club – 1.68 billion versus 1.45 billion.
It so happened that “Toronto” came out on big earnings as at the time when rapper Drake became their ambassador. In collaboration with the musician, the club changed its corporate identity, as well as the surroundings at basketball games. If hockey Toronto is conservatism, basketball is a youth-oriented mainstream. The average price for a Raptors ticket is $ 75.
MLSE DECIDED TO CREATE FOOTBALL CLUB
In 2005 MLSE announced the creation of a football club. The future of the main league soccer depended on the success of Toronto – since then two new MLS clubs have appeared in Canada – in Montreal and Vancouver. MLSE paid MLS $ 10 million for the appearance of the club. The league’s buy-in now exceeds $ 100 million.
The management of the hockey club in 2006 agreed with the city administration to build a new stadium for 30 thousand spectators. Under the contract, the construction of BMO Field was funded by taxpayers, with MLSE covering all operating costs over the next several decades. The stadium was built on the site of an old baseball arena. Prior to that, the main football facility in the city was another baseball stadium – Rogers Center.
MLSE has set itself the goal of taking Toronto to the top of the league. It was possible only ten years later, when the club was replenished with several eminent European and South American footballers. For example, in 2015 the Italian Sebastian Giovinco moved to Toronto, he was the highest paid player in the league for a long time.
MLSE could pay the Italian $ 7 million, despite the club’s loss. We can say that football “Toronto” lives off the income of the basketball and hockey clubs. Over the past four years, the club’s total loss was $ 35 million. But this does not matter for MLSE, since the company, as a stadium leaseholder, also earns from hosting concerts and matches of the Canadian national team.
In 2016, Toronto Argonauts from the Canadian Football League moved to play at BMO Field. It is a professional league for Canadian football, the second most popular sport in the country. In 2015, MLSE acquired the team, making it a unique sports company in North America – the conglomerate is comprised of representatives from four of the continent’s six top leagues. The best combination is probably only Stan Kroenke’s . The only club in the city not yet managed by MLSE is the Toronto Blue Jays baseball.
ON MLSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE 2026 WORLD CUP IN TORONTO
The football team has taken on a new meaning for MLSE, with at least three matches of the 2026 World Cup at BMO Field in 2026. Let’s remind that in seven years the main football tournament of the planet will be held in three countries at once – in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The Canadian cluster, in addition to Toronto, is represented by Montreal and Edmonton.
The main condition for submitting an application for each city was the presence of a stadium with 45 thousand seats. Because of this, Calgary and Ottawa refused to participate in the selection. Vancouver planned to list BC Place as its bid. This is the main stadium of the 2010 Olympic Games, it can accommodate 60 thousand spectators. But the World Cup 2026 required the reconstruction of the arena, and because of this, the municipality abandoned its ideas.
Thus, only three cities remain from Canada. There was no selection – the 2026 World Cup would have taken place in Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto anyway. But if in the first two cities there were no problems with infrastructure, but in Toronto there were – BMO Field can accommodate only 30 thousand spectators, and at the baseball Rogers Center in early summer the season of Major League Baseball will be in full swing.
So BMO Field will need to be remodeled anyway. The city and MLSE are expected to invest $ 150 million in the renovation. Thus, hockey “Toronto” is directly related to the World Cup 2026, because the renovation of the arena will take place at the expense of the income from the NHL club.
***
At the beginning of 2019, the company, which at one time only owned a hockey club, had in its hands: a profitable basketball franchise, the MLS champion and the strongest football team in Canada, several clubs from minor leagues, the main concert and sports venue of the city and a stadium for 45 thousand spectators who will host the 2026 World Cup. It is unlikely that Smythe 80 years ago could have imagined what his brainchild would turn into.
But, paradoxically, according to queries in search engines and in terms of the amount of news, Toronto is inferior to the Blue Jays baseball club – it is the only sports team in the city that has nothing to do with a hockey club.

Coach of MHC “Sochi” Leonid Beresnev told how the guys who make up the nearest reserve of “leopards” learned that they were going to Sochi and were going to the tournament:
– We learned that we would go to the tournament, yesterday, in the training process.Let me tell you a little secret: the team worked with vests yesterday. We were informed about the trip, we took off our vests and went to the airport. There was an opportunity to take part in this tournament, and we used it. I think that it is always a pleasure to come to Sochi! The guys perfectly understand the level of the Parimatch Sochi Hockey Open.

This problem has no concrete solution
Goalkeeper of a number of KHL teams and the Russian national team Konstantin Barulin speculated about lacrosse goals.
– Exactly ten years ago, at the World Championships in Slovakia in the semifinals against Finland, you missed a lacrosse goal from Mikael Granlund. This abandoned puck was later recognized as the most beautiful in the history of world hockey championships. But the most interesting thing about this story is that this goal did not appear on you with a stigma. Moreover, in the minds of all hockey fans, you became, as it were, an accomplice in the creation of a masterpiece. I agree?
– We, the goalkeepers, have such a share that no matter how you play, the puck will still find its way into the goal. This is the meaning of the hockey game. And only in Russia they will point fingers at you and say at every corner: “I missed, I missed, I missed.” In the West, fans have a completely different perception of scoring. The emphasis is solely on the athlete who has played well. There they will say – it was not the goalkeeper who conceded, but the striker scored. True, after that tournament, people in Europe constantly come up to me and offer me photographs for an autograph, which show exactly the episode with Granlund’s goal at my goal. But I never sign these cards.
– Why?
– This is my principled position.
– I know that a postage stamp was issued in Finland dedicated to this goal.
– And as soon as it happened, Mikael Granlund called me right away.
– To apologize?
– No. He offered to sue the manufacturers for using our images without our consent.
– Amazing Finnish practicality. So how did that story end?
– We began with the help of lawyers to find out what we can do, but it turned out that the manufacturer received permission to issue a stamp with our image from the International Ice Hockey Federation.
– It turns out that the money again went to the organization headed by Mr. Fasel?
– I have no idea, but, as they explained to us, before every tournament organized by IIHF, all hockey players subscribe to consent to the use of video and photo images of their participation.
– Do I understand correctly that you and Granlund did not communicate anymore?
– No.
– What can you say about his younger brother Markus, who plays for Salavat Yulaev this season and whom you did not allow to hit your goal on November 25 last year in the KHL regular championship game?
– It is clear that by KHL standards both Granlund Jr. and Temu Hartikainen are superstars. It’s not just that both of them are in the top five most productive hockey players in the championship. After Linus Umark left for Switzerland, many were skeptical about the continuation of the extravaganza performed by the first Ufa link. However, with the arrival of Markus, the performance of the leading three “Salavat Yulaev” did not decrease. He managed to replace the skilled Swede, and it was oh, how difficult it was to do it.
– You finally figured out how the goalkeeper should act in order not to miss this ill-fated lacrosse goal?
– There is no specific solution to this problem and here’s why.If we reconsider the goal performed by Granlund, we will notice that he was not in a static position outside the goal, but was moving at a decent speed. The fact is that he did not need to lift the puck, because, by chance, she herself successfully lay on the hook of his club. As a result, he performed everything brilliantly, and the action itself in his performance took no more than two seconds. In this situation, I really had no chance of salvation. At the same time, if we consider similar washers performed by the same Andrei Svechnikov, then he is just at first located outside the goal, lifts the puck and only then brings it into the goal. With such actions of the striker, the goalkeeper, in theory, has a chance of salvation. At the same time, each goalkeeper uses his own developments to solve this problem, – said the hockey player.

When the Olympic Club decided to add a golf course for its members, in 1918 it acquired the existing Lakeside Golf Club.Additional land was purchased in 1922 and the existing 18-hole course was replaced by two golf courses. The Lakeside Club was also designed at the time by Arthur Brown, Jr., architect of the San Francisco City Hall and the San Francisco Opera House.
Two new golf courses were opened in 1924 by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting. But during the year, winter storms caused such damage to the tracks that they had to be repaired. Whiting, who runs the club, built two new courses, which opened in 1927.The 1927 lake course is the same as it is today, although it has since undergone extensive renovations and several hole changes.
The 1927 Ocean Field was redesigned in 2000 by the architect Tom Weisskopf. Weisskopf also developed the Par-3 Cliffs Course, which opened in 1994.

90,000 Russian hockey players became heroes of the NHL game day – RT in Russian
Alexander Ovechkin climbed to 12th place in the list of the best snipers in NHL history, gaining four points in the match against Toronto. Andrei Svechnikov brought Carolina a victory over Calgary, becoming the first league player to score a lacrosse puck. Alexander Radulov scored a hat-trick in the match for Dallas, scoring two goals in the fall. RT talks about the latest successes of Russian hockey players in the NHL.
Ovechkin’s Crazy Day
Last night, what was one of the most anticipated events at the start of the NHL season happened.Alexander Ovechkin has broken through to 12th place on the list of the best snipers in the history of the league, beating Canadian Luc Robitaille. The Russian has already scored 669 goals in his career – two of them he recorded in his asset in the last match with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
For the Washington Capitals, their next match in Canada had a tough start. Evgeny Kuznetsov hit the board hard and went into the locker room for a long time, and already at the 40th second, the guests were in the role of catching up after the goal of Andreas Junsson.
However, by the middle of the game, the situation changed.Defender John Carlson scored two goals, continuing to amaze with his striking skills. Both times he was assisted by Ovechkin. Carlson broke the club’s record for defensive performance in one month. In October, he earned 23 points – one more than Sergei Gonchar had in January 2000.
The teams left for the second break with an equal score, and immediately after the start of the third period, Toronto took the lead thanks to the second goal of Auston Matthews. After that, Ovechkin got down to business. He first leveled the score, ending TJ Oshi’s brilliant solo breakthrough, which distracted all opponents on the court.
In overtime, when Maple Leafs players were sent off twice in a row, the Russian forward could not help punishing them for this. Taking a position in the left face-off circle, Ovechkin waited for a pass from Dmitry Orlov and brought Washington another victory and leadership in the Eastern Conference, and himself – 12th place among the best snipers in the history of the league, with which he was immediately congratulated by Robitail.
“Hey Alex! Congratulations on surpassing my result. This is absolutely deserved. You still have many years and many goals ahead of you. You are an amazing player. Congratulations on behalf of all the hockey players in the league! ” Said the legendary Los Angeles Kings player.
Ovechkin himself said after the match that this was the result of mutual understanding within the team.
“My job is to shoot at goal, create chances and shoot goals for the team. The guys know if I’m open, I’m ready to take a pass. When I am closely watched over, others are open. The well-coordinated game and the effectiveness of our team are built on this, ”the striker noted.
The next goal for Ovechkin is 684 goals for Teemu Selanne. He also continues to chase David Pastrnyak in a dispute for the title of the best sniper of this season. The Boston Bruins striker is still one goal ahead of the Russian. Finally, in the near future, Ovechkin will be able to become one of the top 40 scorers in the history of the league – there are three points left before the result of Phil Houseley at the bottom of the list.
Supergol Svechnikov
Andrey Svechnikov could argue with Ovechkin for the title of the hero of the day. He single-handedly brought the Carolina Hurricanes victory over the Calgary Flames, driving the hockey community crazy with a lacrosse super goal.
Most of the match, “Carolina” was inferior with a score of 0: 1, until a historic moment occurred in the 50th minute. Svechnikov climbed with the puck behind someone else’s gates, but did not go from the other side, where Oliver Chillington was watching him.Instead, he swiftly backtracked with the puck on the hook and threw it over the shoulder of goalkeeper David Rittich.
This goal, which is called “Michigan” in hockey, or lacrosse for the similarity to a throw from this sport, was repeatedly performed in junior and student competitions, but in the NHL all attempts were unsuccessful, although such “magicians” tried to become pioneers. like Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tyler Ennis.
According to Svechnikov, he was the first in the league to shoot from the hook thanks to constant training with head coach Rod Brindamore.
“Actually, I practiced this throw this morning, so it was a good test for me. I practice a lot with head coach Rod. He passes to me when I go outside the goal, and I try to practice this maneuver at every training session, ”the Russian admitted.
But one goal did not give the team the main thing – victory. And to get it, the Russian took advantage of the next removal from his rivals. Svechnikov threw with brushes from the left circle and now hit another corner of the goal.“Carolina” won with a score of 2: 1 and remains the leader of the East in terms of lost points along with “Washington”.
Radulov’s hat-trick
Alexander Radulov scored the most of the Russians on the last game day. He effectively interrupted his lingering black streak, because of which he was not criticized only by the lazy. His hat-trick helped the Dallas Stars beat Minnesota Wild.
The Texans failed to start the match, losing 0: 3 by the 35th minute. After two conceded goals, the main goalkeeper of Dallas Ben Bishop sat on the bench, allowing Anton Khudobin to prove himself. The Russian goalkeeper made 11 saves in the end and conceded only in the minority.
It was a big mistake on the part of Minnesota to believe that the deed was done. “Dallas” made an incredible comeback, and Radulov led the team, returning to the second line. He scored the first puck, assisted Roope Hintsu, then brought the team forward, and finally hit from the middle of the site on an empty goal, setting the final score 6: 3. Moreover, two of his three goals Radulov designed in beautiful falls.
Karma punished Slay. Former Ufa striker could not bring victory to Dynamo
Vadim Evseev’s team took away the most important draw from Moscow, and Slay made an inexplicable act outside the field.
BAN IN INSTAGRAM
Slay made his debut for Dynamo in the match against Ufa. In RPL, players on loan often do not go out to play against the team that made the transfer.Either the leasing club pays, or the player himself. But Dynamo and Ufa resolved the issue calmly. The Nigerian was allowed to play against his Bashkir team. For Sly, this match was very important, firstly, the debut, and secondly, the game against the former club.
The striker has become a Ufa legend. He is the best scorer in the history of the team, a man who brought local football to a new level, one of the main creators of the Ufa team’s entry into the Europa League. He is the main favorite of the Bashkir public, in general, for a club with a small temporal history, at this stage, he is almost a legend.
But on the day of the game, Sly blocked Ufa on Instagram. Why the Nigerian did this act is not clear. But this behavior towards the former team is wrong. Moreover, the striker may return to Bashkortostan in the summer if Dynamo does not buy him out for 3.5 million euros. The Moscow club recently reported that there is no mandatory buyout clause in the lease agreement. Sly surprised the local fans and the club itself, the opinion about him changed slightly.
The general director of Ufa said he did not know why the forward blocked his club’s instagram. Shamil Gazizov thinks that this could have happened by accident. The functionary justifies the football player, because he did the act for a reason.
– Is the path to the club closed for him after that? No, anything can happen. Today he is a Dynamo player, but belongs to Ufa. Never say never, ”Gazizov said.

SLY DIDN’T REALIZE STOP POINTS
Backstage games only fueled interest in the match.Sly was at the forefront of Dynamo’s attack and from the first minutes played actively in his usual style. The productive forward tried to beat the defenders of Ufa due to his speed. And often he managed to deliver threats to the gates of the former club. In the second half, Sly could open the score twice in the match. But Alexander Belenov stood up as a wall in front of the attacker. First, he played flawlessly at the exit, and then made a super save in a jump to the left corner. In the first episode, Sly was greedy, he could give the pass to his partner, but it is clear that he wanted to score himself.
Many people joke after the match that karma killed the striker. If he hadn’t blocked Ufa’s instagram, he could have realized one one hundred percent moment out of two. But in the end there are zeros on the scoreboard, and Dynamo cannot score three matches in a row. Muscovites have big problems in the attack. Six goals in three rounds is a disastrous result for Dmitry Khokhlov’s team . Sly’s play can be assessed in different ways. On the one hand, he was active, won the fight, ran and created chances. On the other hand, I did not solve the main problem – goals scored. And if you take only the result, then the Nigerian has not brought any benefit, while all efforts are in vain. But this was only the first match.

“UFA” IN THE TEN
Football club “Ufa” is going through difficult times. The team has sold out its leaders, is playing in a renewed line-up. But even without the leaders , Vadim Evseev put together a fighting team, which is in the top ten RPL teams after nine rounds.Yes, someone will say that “Ufa” puts on the “bus”, attacks little and only fights back. And it is true. The Bashkir team in the match against Dynamo had only 30 percent possession of the ball and earned zero corners. The Ufa team had one dangerous counterattack per match, Lovro Bizyak ran away one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but failed to realize the moment.
So far Ufa cannot play other football. The team needs time to develop, the more the result puts pressure on it. The club must be in the top ten. Now Vadim Evseev has several players who are able to give results after a while. Daniil Fomin is already the leader of Ufa, the newcomer of the team is only 22 years old. Slowly, Nikolay Giorgobiani is coming to the main line-up. The future of the club belongs to these two players. They are progressing, growing and, believe me, they will give results in a couple of years.
Scold “Ufa” for defensive football is not worth it. Evseev works for the result, he is. Therefore, there are no complaints about him as a coach. The Bashkir team has never won an away win in the new season, but there have been striking victories at home, for example, over Zenit. The main thing is that “Ufa” has acquired a character, the same fighting as that of Vadim Evseev. The difference compared to last year is palpable.
