The first artificial playing fields were nearly as hard as cement.
AstroTurf was invented in 1965 and first used in the Houston Astrodome in 1966, much to the annoyance of Philadelphia Phillies slugger Dick Allen. “If a cow can’t eat it,’’ he said, “I don’t want to play on it.”
As the playing surfaces have been refined, the number of cities and towns in the region with artificial turf fields on the ground or in the works has grown, even as some communities kick the tires on such projects and find them too rich for their blood.
A survey of the 57 Massachusetts cities and towns in the Globe North area found that 22 already have at least one publicly owned artificial turf playing field. Five other communities are in various stages of building them, often as part of an overall renovation of athletic facilities.
Two other communities — Swampscott and Tewksbury — have rejected plans to install artificial fields, while others are exploring their options.
Most turf fields cost between $750,000 and $1 million, depending on the amount of site preparation required, the type of turf, and extras such as an adjoining tracks or upgraded drainage systems.
Depending on the amount of use, the fields usually last about 10 years. Maintenance costs are low, and the fields can be used almost year-round. High school athletic directors love them because they allow games to be played regardless of the weather conditions.
The Synthetic Turf Council, which represents manufacturers, says that in recent years 75 independent, credible research studies from groups such as the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency have validated the safety of the fields.
When it comes to some sports, teams that play regularly on a home field with artificial turf appear to have a competitive edge.
“I didn’t realize the disadvantage we were at before not having it,” said Jim Coffey, the athletic director at Beverly High, where a new turf field was ready in March, just in time for lacrosse season. The field will be used for several sports, but football will remain on the grass at Hurd Stadium.
Beverly received a $500,000 grant from the state’s Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities Grant Program toward the $833,000 cost of the turf project.
The rest was raised privately.
That’s the route Peabody High would like to go in replacing the natural turf at Coley Lee Field, which turns into a mud bowl after heavy rains. The city has taken some stop-gap measures, but Peabody High AD Phil Sheridan said the high school programs need an artificial turf field.
The city was hoping to land a grant like Beverly, but Sheridan said the lack of an up-to-date open space plan has to be resolved before the state will consider an application.
Communities looking to build artificial turf fields as part of school projects won’t get any help from the Massachusetts School Building Authority, which allocates state aid for renovations and new facilities.
Dan Collins, spokesman for the building authority, said the agency will not reimburse cities and towns for synthetic fields when they are part of a building project because they are not considered a necessity. “In some cases, we will reimburse for natural turf fields when they are part of a building project,” he added.
That is not stopping several communities from going forward with new projects.
At Town Meeting on May 14, Wakefield voters overwhelmingly passed a $5 million, 15-year bond funding a project that will provide a new turf field, bleachers with a press box, a concession stand, bathrooms, and team rooms at Landrigan Field, which is used for football and lacrosse. A new turf field, a resurfaced track, and lights also will be added to Beasley Field, which is currently used for lacrosse and track. The project also includes replacing the Wakefield High field house floor and replacing or resurfacing tennis courts in town.
In Newburyport, the city is renovating World War Memorial Stadium — home to several outdoor sports, including football — in stages.
Phase 2 is expected to include an artificial turf field, boosted by a $500,000 donation from the Institution for Savings. City officials hope the field for the stadium, which was built in the 1930s, will be ready for play in 2014.
Wilmington is planning to build an artificial turf field as part of its new $82 million high school, but an appeal by residents who object to this use of wetlands to the state Department of Environmental Protection has delayed the start of construction. The town had hoped the field would be completed in time for this fall’s sports seasons.
“Right now, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen,” said Wilmington High AD Ed Harrison.
Gloucester is raising funds for a proposed $3.5 million renovation of aged Newell Stadium, which would include an artificial turf field among several improvements. The city has committed to issuing a $1.5 million bond, and the private funding is headed by a $500,000 contribution from New Balance for naming rights to the field. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2013.
A group called Team Triton is spearheading the effort to raise the $2 million needed for a $2.5 million renovation of the stadium at Triton Regional High in the Byfield section of Newbury, including a new artificial turf field.
The Institution for Savings got the ball rolling with a $525,000 donation for the project, which supporters hope to complete by September 2014.
Ground broke in April for renovations to Macdonald Stadium in Malden, a project that will see a new regulation-size track and an artificial turf football field installed. The project, slated to be finished by November, is one of several capital improvements funded by a local meals tax passed last January. Malden already has a turf soccer field at Pine Banks Park.
Melrose joined the party last November when it celebrated the new artificial turf surface at Fred Green Field, home of Red Raiders football.
Still others are in the field of dreams phase. Saugus High AD Mike Nelson said he has had some informal talks with a town official and two informational seminars with an engineering firm.
Danvers High AD John Sullivan said the town hopes to come up with a plan for a field sometime in the next three years.within three years.
Peabody’s Sheridan said the key to his city building its turf field will be getting the first large block of money in place, be in from a state grant, a private donor, or public funds.
That, he believes, will open the door to fund-raising.
“Once people see it’s a real possibility with a finish line, they’re more willing to give,” he said. “The youth sports, the adult soccer leagues, they all start to invest in it.”

Preparing student athletes for life, Beverly HS coach returns from cancer treatment – Boston 25 News
BEVERLY, Mass. — For more than two months, Beverly High School teacher and assistant lacrosse coach Ben Goodhue has been fighting stage 4 brain cancer, but now he’s back on the field and inspiring his students.
After being diagnosed in early January, Goodhue had to take a leave of absence from school, but students said they knew he’d be back.
“If he was the one person who could do it, it’d be him so it’s good to see it,” senior lacrosse player Kevin Flaherty said.

The chemo and radiation treatments are done for now, and things are looking up for the beloved coach.
“They were very optimistic about my full recovery based on my blood work, it’s been off the charts,” he said.
The positive prognosis means Goodhue can go back to work part-time.
“To go back and be able to teach has been awesome,” he said. “The coaching is just the cherry, you know, the cherry on the top.”
Goodhue wasn’t at practice Tuesday afternoon, but it gave his colleagues and the student athletes a chance to testify to his legacy.
“What a role model, a guy that’s able to go through something like that and able to lead by example of not giving up and just having that strength,” head lacrosse coach Jim LaSelva said.
Goodhue’s role now has changed after all he’s been through.
Now instead of preparing the teens for game day, he’s helping them prepare for life.
“It’s not all that bad sometimes, someone didn’t like your tweet or favor something, meanwhile, we have bigger things to worry about, real life things, so it’s great having Ben,” LaSelva said.
The main lesson has been that of determination.
“We were running sprints and Coach Goodhue was standing over there and we were tired, but there was no way we could dog it in front of him because it’s like, if he’s out here battling cancer and we’re just healthy 18-year-old kids, there’s no way we shouldn’t be going all out,” senior lacrosse player Kyle Chouinard said.
Goodhue said he’s hoping his students and players will learn from him, and for that, he says his diagnosis was worth it.
“It’s something I can take forever in my teaching career, my coaching career, and say look despite any adversity you’ll ever face, I’m living proof that no matter how big the challenge might be, you can overcome it,” he said.

BEVERLY, Mass. —The parent of a Beverly High School lacrosse player has reported that his son and another player have been suspended from Saturday’s championship game against Marblehead after a picture of them smoking cigars appeared in the Citizen this week.
WickedLocal reported Friday that John Donovan told The Salem News Friday that his son, midfielder Nick Donovan, and defenseman Dylan Jutras were suspended under Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) rules governing the use of tobacco.
A picture of Donovan, Jutras and two other Beverly High School graduates smoking cigars at the school’s June 1 graduation ceremony appeared in the June 5 edition of the Citizen.
Students who play for MIAA member schools are forbidden to consume alcohol, tobacco or non-prescribed drugs and can be suspended from 25 percent of remaining regular season games or removed completely from tournament games scheduled at the time of the infraction, according to MIAA spokesperson Paul Wetzel.
Wetzel could not confirm the suspensions, but said that it is the responsibility of local athletic directors and principals to enforce MIAA rules.
Neither Beverly Athletic Director James Coffey or BHS principal Sean Gallagher could be reached for comment.
The Panthers face Marblehead in the Division 2 North final Saturday at 4 p.m. at Bertram Field in Salem.
Beverly lacrosse coach John Pynchon also did not confirm the suspensions.
“We are preparing as a team to play Marblehead tomorrow,” he said, offering no further comment.

But being an athlete couldn’t screen every kid from school, family, and social problems. “Our board decided we wanted to take that leap,” he said. “We had never broadened our mission.’’
Thank God we have Bill Gaine to fix our drug and alcohol problem “on the streets.
” Thank God he’s bringing awareness of the demons and temptations of smoking cigars at graduations. Thank God he fixed all of our family and social problems by taking cigars off the streets of Beverly. Thank God he arbitrarily “broadened the mission” of the MIAA. Games aside, Gaine’s goal has always been to make better citizens out of the student-athletes. “One thing you have to understand, kids are unpredictable,’’ he said. “But they will respond to expectations. I’ve seen the results.”
They will respond to the expectations? But they broke the rules!!! Doesn’t this just prove that Bill Gaine’s entire life is a giant failure? And since when was it Bill Gaine’s job to make kids better citizens? Isn’t that what schools do? Nah fuck that. Bill Gaine has to do something to justify his $138,000 salary, so arbitrarily ruining a kid’s high school experience is the best way to do that. He’s seen the results.
Like, do they think these kids will look back at this in 20 years and say, “Man, I really learned my lesson there”? Nope.
Twenty years from now they’ll be adults with kids of their own and say, “What kind of asshole does that to kids? If someone did that to one of my kids I’d pop them in the nose.”
Bill’s really left a legacy though. Even ask him:

So the only people who can do anything about this are the people who schedule the games. They need to tell the MIAA that their services are no longer needed. AD’s can schedule tournaments. AD’s can enforce rules. AD’s can use discretion. And AD’s can keep the gate revenue that they collect at their games instead of handing it over to an organization that does nothing but fuck their schools over.

Michael Leahy’s non-fiction book Difficult Lessons of 1988 documents the lives of six Beverly high school students throughout the school year.There was 100% graduation in Beverly in 1984, but three students committed suicide. These suicides piqued Leahy’s interest in Beverly, and in 1985 he began writing Hard Lessons.
Leahy has heard many stories of Beverly experiencing intense academic pressure, drug abuse, and “hedonistic dens”. However, after talking with Beverly students, he concluded that sex and drug addiction were neither higher nor lower than other local high schools. Enrollment disputes
The Beverly Hills Unified School District has experienced student enrollment controversy, mainly over diversity, and more recently over hereditary enrollment (alumni preference).
Over the years, Beverly has selected high-class students from twelve Los Angeles high schools on diversity permits in an effort to increase enrollment numbers for minorities. The selection was based on test results, grades and written samples. However, according to enrollment figures for the 2006-2007 school year, seven out of ten students enrolled in this way were of Asian ethnicity. In April 2007, following pressure from parents and activist Earl Ofari Hutchinson, who criticized the school for not recruiting more African American and Latino students, Superintendent Kari McVeigh agreed to extend the application deadline to April 27, as reported in “ Los Angeles Times and The Beverly Hills Courier, in the hope that more students from these minority groups will seek enrollment.According to The Beverly Hills Courier (May 25, 2007), “civil rights leaders hailed the final selection of students” as “an honest effort to achieve ethnic diversity.”

The Highlights School Newspaper has also received numerous awards for its reporting and writing. Highlights employees recently received awards at the JEA National Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. In April 2009, Highlights employees were ranked 3rd nationwide in Phoenix, Arizona. Of the ninety football teams in Beverly Hills High School history, BHHS has won 12 South Section championships.
Performing arts
Beverly Hills High School has a performing arts department that involves casting directors, writers, and producers in performances and attending classes to talk to students. Every year in late March – early April, the school holds its annual musical performances, which are attended by students studying the performing arts.Many of these musicals are based on Broadway award-winning musicals. BHHS is also known for its Theater Acting Workshop, which only auditions for juniors and high school students enter. Nicolas Cage enrolled in this class once.
The BHHS Marching Band has been selected to perform at Disneyland several times in its history. The Marching Band has also been invited twice in its history to the New Year’s Parade in London, most recently in 2016.
BHHS has a very successful winter drum line which, as of June 2012, was in its second competitive season.
They compete in the SCPA and WGI circuits. The BHHS Drum Line has performed shows such as The Technology Tour: The Inner Workings of a Computer and Sensor State: State, Concessions, Resistance.
Beverly Hills High School also has two award-winning groups: the Madrigal Singers (chamber choir) and the Minnesingers (currently a female choir). Both bands have received numerous awards for their performances, usually at Heritage Festivals. They traveled throughout the United States to famous places such as San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York, Chicago, Orlando, Washington, and even internationally to Mexico, France and New Zealand.In addition, in December, both groups go to Christmas carols to raise money for their festival trips. The groups were founded by Robert Holmes, who also helped found the Idyllwild School of Music and the See Idyllwild Arts Summer Program.
Dance Company BHHS is renowned for its success in the dance arts. In January, they hold annual shows, which they practice as soon as the school year begins.
A few years ago, the dance troupe went to a sister school in Cannes, France, where they were invited to perform.BHHS also has hip-hop group AP Posse, which performs between dance troupe numbers.

MorTorq won the Chairman’s Award (the most prestigious award a business team can receive) in 2010, 2013 and 2019 at the Los Angeles Regional Competition, and in 2014 at the Las Vegas Regional Competition. The team won two Regional events: Regional in Oregon in 2010 and Regional in Los Angeles in 2015.MorTork took part in the First Championship in 2004, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. In 2019, the team was selected for the first time as a member of the alliance in the championship playoffs.
Oil wells
A bush of nineteen oil wells on one “drilling island” on the Beverly campus is easily visible to drivers heading west along Olympic Boulevard towards Century City.
Oil wells pump most of the oil from underneath the Beverly campus, and many of them have been drilled obliquely for decades in the productive areas of the western Beverly Hills oilfield under many Beverly Hills homes and apartment blocks..: 15 active oil wells leased in the US and High School, as well as four water wells, are located in the cluster on Olympic Boulevard and Heath Avenue.
As of May 2006, Beverly Hills High School wells were pumped out a day, earning the school approximately $ 300,000 a year in royalties.
In the late 1990s, an art studio led by two Beverly high school graduates volunteered to cover the well railing, which was a solid gray at the time, with individual tiles painted by children with cancer.The studio did the design and drew lines on the tiles, but the kids painted the tiles between the lines. The studio has made the design quite abstract: the design consists of random shapes on colorful backgrounds. The design opening ceremony took place in 2001.
Beverly rose to prominence when Erin Brockovich and Ed Masri announced three lawsuits in 2003 and 2004 on behalf of 25, 400, and 300 (respectively) former students who attended Beverly from the 1970s to the 1990s. In April 2003, Texas-based law firm Baron Budd partnered with Masri Vititu Law Firm to share its experience in litigation related to health risks from volatile chemicals.Ninety-four real cancer claims have been filed in Santa Monica.
Lawsuits alleged that former students developed cancer due to toxic fumes from oil wells. The oil wells are very close to all of Beverly’s sports facilities, including the soccer field, soccer field and racetrack. Beverly students – not only athletes, but also students who took compulsory physical education from the 1970s to the 1990s – had to run next to oil wells.
The city, the school district, and the oil companies named by the respondents disputed this claim, stating that they conducted air quality tests that showed normal high school air quality.
In 2003, the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California published a Public Assessment of Cancer Relative to Beverly Hills, California, which failed to support Masri’s claims.
Following complaints about the Beverly Oil Rig, the District Air Quality Agency investigated Venoco and issued three Notices of Violation in 2003 regarding the operation of the drilling island. The settlement of the penalty issue included a requirement for Venoco to continuously monitor air quality in secondary schools and to keep field gas (primarily methane) out of the atmosphere.
On December 12, 2006, the first 12 plaintiffs (out of more than 1000) were barred from participating in summary proceedings, as there was no indication that the pollutant (benzene) caused these diseases, and the concentrations were hundreds of thousands of times lower than the levels associated with any risk. In the fall of 2007, the plaintiffs agreed to pay the school district and city up to $ 450,000 in legal costs.
This payment of costs is without prejudice to any of the plaintiffs in the case on appeal.
In June 2004, Beverly Hills Courier magazine editor Norma Zager was named Journalist of the Year in the Los Angeles Press Club’s Journalism of Southern California competition for her coverage of the Erin Brockovich-Ed Mazri lawsuit. BHHS has a number of well-known alumni, many of whom are entertainers, children of performers, or other distinguished individuals. In addition, many famous people taught at the soap opera school of actor John Ingle on the drama and acting program from 1964 to 1985.
