The Science Behind Poron®XRD™ Technology
At the heart of the CS-R’s revolutionary design lies the Poron®XRD™ Foam liner. This advanced material represents a significant leap forward in impact protection technology. But what exactly makes Poron®XRD™ so effective?
Poron®XRD™ is a specialized urethane foam that exhibits unique properties under impact. In its resting state, the material remains soft and pliable, ensuring optimal comfort for the wearer. However, when subjected to sudden force or impact, the molecular structure of Poron®XRD™ instantly transforms, momentarily becoming rigid to absorb and dissipate energy.
This remarkable ability to adapt to impact forces makes Poron®XRD™ an ideal material for sports protection equipment. In the context of the CS-R helmet, it provides a crucial layer of defense against the types of collisions commonly experienced in youth lacrosse.
Benefits of Poron®XRD™ in the CS-R Helmet
- Superior impact absorption compared to traditional foam materials
- Maintains its protective properties over repeated impacts
- Lightweight and breathable, enhancing overall comfort
- Excellent durability for long-lasting protection
- Combines seamlessly with other protective elements in the helmet design
Engineering Protection: The CS-R’s Advanced Liner System
The CS-R helmet doesn’t rely solely on Poron®XRD™ for protection. Cascade’s engineers have developed a sophisticated dual-layer liner system that combines the benefits of Poron®XRD™ with Gen3 EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) foam.
This innovative approach addresses a critical aspect of youth lacrosse safety: the nature of impacts experienced by younger players. U12 athletes typically encounter different types and intensities of collisions compared to their older counterparts. The CS-R’s liner system is specifically engineered to manage these youth-specific impact scenarios effectively.
How does the dual-layer liner system enhance protection?
The combination of Poron®XRD™ and Gen3 EPP creates a synergistic effect, offering superior protection across a range of impact types:
- Low-intensity impacts are primarily absorbed by the softer Poron®XRD™ layer, providing comfort and protection during routine play.
- Medium-intensity impacts engage both layers, with Poron®XRD™ and EPP working in tandem to dissipate energy.
- High-intensity impacts activate the full potential of both materials, with the EPP layer providing structural integrity while Poron®XRD™ maximizes energy absorption.
This multi-layered approach ensures that U12 players receive optimal protection across the full spectrum of potential impacts they may encounter on the field.
Tailored Fit: Adapting to the Anatomy of Young Athletes
Recognizing that proper fit is crucial for both comfort and protection, Cascade has incorporated several features in the CS-R helmet designed specifically for the anatomy of U12 players.
Full-Pivot System: A Custom Cradle for Young Heads
The CS-R’s upgraded Full-Pivot System represents a significant advancement in youth helmet fit technology. This innovative system allows the rear third of the helmet liner to pivot independently, creating a customized cradle that adapts to the unique shape of each player’s head.
Why is this feature so important for youth players? The anatomy of a child’s head differs significantly from that of an adult or even an older teenager. The Full-Pivot System accounts for these differences, ensuring that the helmet provides consistent, secure coverage across all areas of the head.
Memory Foam Side Fit: Comfort Meets Protection
Complementing the Full-Pivot System is the CS-R’s new memory foam side fit feature. This addition addresses two critical aspects of helmet performance:
- Comfort: The memory foam conforms to the player’s head shape, reducing pressure points and enhancing overall comfort during extended wear.
- Lateral Protection: By providing a snug, customized fit along the sides of the head, the memory foam enhances the helmet’s ability to protect against side impacts.
Together, these fit-focused features ensure that the CS-R helmet stays securely in place during play, maximizing protection while minimizing discomfort and distraction.
Design Philosophy: Form Meets Function in the CS-R
While protection and fit are paramount, Cascade hasn’t overlooked the importance of aesthetics and performance in the CS-R’s design. The helmet’s visual language draws inspiration from Cascade’s renowned R family of helmets, creating a sense of continuity and aspiration for young players.
FutureStar Mono™ R SHELL: Strength and Style
The CS-R features a one-piece shell and visor design dubbed the FutureStar Mono™ R SHELL. This unified structure serves multiple purposes:
- Enhanced Rigidity: The integrated design creates a more robust structure, improving the helmet’s ability to manage frontal impacts.
- Streamlined Aesthetics: The smooth, uninterrupted lines of the shell give the CS-R a sleek, professional appearance.
- Youth-Specific Sizing: While inspired by adult designs, the shell is carefully proportioned to fit younger players comfortably.
3-bar Jr. R Mask: Optimized Vision and Protection
Recognizing the unique requirements of younger players, Cascade developed the 3-bar Jr. R Mask specifically for the CS-R. This innovative face mask design offers several advantages:
- Improved Field of Vision: The optimized bar configuration maximizes the player’s visual field, enhancing situational awareness on the field.
- Weight Reduction: By tailoring the mask to smaller face sizes, Cascade has reduced overall helmet weight without compromising protection.
- Balanced Protection: The 3-bar design strikes an ideal balance between coverage and openness, protecting vital areas while maintaining comfort and breathability.
Customization: Empowering Young Players with Personal Style
Understanding the importance of team identity and individual expression in youth sports, Cascade has made customization a key feature of the CS-R helmet.
What customization options does the CS-R offer?
The CS-R provides an impressive array of personalization choices:
- Shell Colors: A wide range of color options allows teams to match their uniforms or create unique color schemes.
- Mask Finishes: Players can choose from various mask finishes, including the standard Silver Steel option.
- Embellishments: Options for adding player names to the mask or logos to the chinstrap provide an extra layer of personalization.
- Decals: Customizable decals for the visor, mohawk, vents, and back panel allow for creative expression and team branding.
This level of customization not only enhances team cohesion and individual pride but also helps young players develop a sense of ownership and responsibility for their equipment.
Manufacturing Excellence: The CS-R Production Process
Cascade’s commitment to quality and innovation extends beyond design to encompass the manufacturing process of the CS-R helmet. The company has implemented state-of-the-art production techniques to ensure that each helmet meets the highest standards of safety and performance.

Review: PORON XRD Impact Protection Foam
The PORON XRD Extreme Impact Protection foam on the left and the fabric kneepad made by Cliff Keen Athletic on the right.
I spent my time at this year’s Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in search of the best new products the outdoor industry had to offer. Generally, the setup of booths is relatively simple, with advertising dollars put toward building the most eye-catching display. But few things work better than a demonstration. That is what I saw when I visited the PORON XRD booth.
The shrill sound of breaking glass gained the attention of most people walking by, eventually growing into a small group gathered around to see what all the fuss was about. Dave Sherman from Rogers Corporation, which manufactures PORON XRD Extreme Impact Protection foam, was giving a demonstration of how the foam protects against injuries by being engineered for repeated impact and shock absorption.
“Impact has started to become a much more important story. You can’t read the newspaper or the sports page without there being some talk of concussions or injuries, so PORON is now used in things like top-rated concussion reduction helmets,” Sherman explained.
While the booth may have not been as tempting to visit as one with brand-new, bright apparel or energy food available for tasting, the purpose of the product is one that’s becoming increasingly more imperative in the outdoor world, especially with the rise of extreme sports. As someone who’s consistently writing about tragedies that result from action sports, I’ve come to understand how essential certain gear is.
I’m still confused by my friends who choose to snowboard without a helmet, especially after professional snowboarder Kevin Pearce’s story took over headlines and was eventually turned into a documentary. It showed how regardless of talent and experience, accidents still happen.
After the demonstration, I wanted to get more information about the foam. While Rogers Corporation dates back many years, the creation of the specific PORON XRD impact foam for uses other than footwear is relatively new. According to the website, “Soft and flexible to the touch, yet tough on impact—XRD Technology is a lightweight, thin and breathable. Designers of protective equipment and apparel, electronic cases, safety, footwear and other gear can now incorporate wearable impact protection that adds a visible technology advantage.”
I received a pair of kneepads that included the foam inside them, which I reviewed during a snowboard lesson this winter in New Hampshire. Simply put, I’m a horrible snowboarder. This was my first lesson and also the first time I’ve been on a board since I was 14. I’m now 23. Since many years had gone by, I assumed the majority of my lesson would be spent falling. I was correct in that assumption.
I spent the first half of the day using the kneepads, and the second half without, hoping to see a difference. Falling was still painful, especially since it was a repeated action, but I didn’t realize how much my knees were protected until I decided to go without the pads. I saw a huge difference. The pain from falling absolutely increased once I took them off. I don’t bruise easily, but my knees were becoming blue and swollen. Near the end of my day-long lesson (thanks to friends who are instructors), I put the kneepads back on. Again, I was basically re-injuring the same spot over and over again, but I could tell that my falls were cushioned once the pads were back on.
In the end, it was obvious I wouldn’t have been able to snowboard (read: fall) for the entire day if not for the kneepads. The fabric of the pads was made by Cliff Keen Athletic, and the foam, manufactured by Rogers Corporation, is PORON XRD Extreme Impact Protection. It can be easily slipped into the fabric for full knee protection. Rogers Corporation is starting to partner with other companies that produce apparel and helmets in order to begin installing the foam for increased protection. The XRD technology is now being used in helmets, gloves, as well as full bodysuits that would be ideal for cycling.

Poron XRD
PORON XRD is the choice for extreme impact protection.
Comfortable, flexible, and lightweight, PORON XRD allows for soft, non-constricting padding and cushioning while still absorbing more than 90% of energy when impacted at high strain rates.
Cutting edge technology
PORON XRD protection has been specially designed to utilise the natural behaviour of polymers to its advantage. It exploits the phenomenon that polymers can act as either a soft or hard (firm) material dependent on either temperature or the rate of impact.
In the case of PORON XRD protection, at room temperature or ‘at rest’, it is soft and contouring to the touch. But when impacted, the material behaves like a much firmer material, allowing it to readily absorb the energy of an impact.
Thus PORON XRD material acts as a layer of wearable protection. It is soft to the touch, lightweight, contouring, and testing confirms that it absorbs more than 90 percent of energy upon repeated impact.
Because it is lightweight and flexible, like a ‘second skin,’ PORON XRD protection will not constrict freedom of movement or range of motion, allowing end users to achieve their peak.
General features of XRD:
-

Hockey Helmet Sizing
Bauer Hockey Helmet Fit
These helmets tend to fit narrower in width and very standard in length. Bauer helmets tend to be a very middle of the road approach in shape and fit a large majority of heads. For players that have a narrower head these helmets will be very comfortable.
Sizing before Purchase
To fit for your proper sized helmet you will need a soft tape measure. Take this tape measure and have another person snugly wrap it around your head at the largest point, usually just above the eyebrows (see left). Record this measurement of circumference and compare it to the available sizing charts in the brand of helmet you are looking at.
Sizing after Purchase
To ensure a good fit after you have received your proper sized helmet, flip open and unlock the helmet clip(s) and slide the helmet to its last and largest setting. Position it on the head so the rim is one finger width above the eyebrow. Gradually begin to downsize the helmet, pressing on the front and back until a comfortable, snug fit is achieved. Lock the helmet into this size by pressing down and closing the locking adjustment(s). Look in a mirror while wearing the helmet to make sure the ear guards are covering at least half of your ear and to make sure the helmet does not appear to be shifting back and forth on your head.
It is recommended to use a mouth guard although not required. It is recommended that players wear HECC and CE Certified helmets and in Hockey Canada sanctioned leagues it is required for helmets to be CSA approved. CSA, HECC and CE Certified stickers are fixed to the helmets indicating their certification.

BAUER RE-AKT 75 COMBO Helmet
The BAUER RE-AKT 75 professional helmet combines excellent protective properties and a comfortable fit. The impact-resistant body is in two pieces, providing a comfortable and quick fit for any hockey player. The Suspended Liner System uses different density foam for better fit and extra protection.
In this case, the system of liners is a multi-layer structure, where the foam layer in contact with the player’s head is soft and is responsible for a comfortable fit, and the layers closer to the body provide effective protection, limiting the force of impact. The hinged design of the bushings better protects against rotational influences. The molded back of the head in the helmet stabilizes and effectively protects the back of the head. The use of Seven + technology in the back of the head helps to absorb the high-intensity impact of a fall on the ice and a strong head impact. Multiple layers of VN foam provide professional-grade comfort and protection. Made from lightweight, breathable Poron XRD foam, the liners effectively dissipate tangential impact forces. The foam overlays in the temple area take on the shape of the hockey player’s head over time, creating a custom fit.
The helmet has an ergonomic, translucent ear protection, protecting them from any impact. The fit of the helmet is adjusted without the use of tools using the special Tool-less Adjustment System. The vents in the helmet enhance airflow and quickly dissipate heat away from the player’s head. All helmet liners are processed with Microban technology, which provides effective, bactericidal protection of the helmet interior and prevents the formation of mold and unpleasant odors.Extra padding on the forehead keeps sweat out of the eyes. This helmet is HECC, CSA and CE certified and is compatible with most face masks and visors.
The bars in the mask are at right angles and provide excellent visibility while maintaining effective protection. The floating chin cup is made of lightweight, foam material for good shock absorption.

BAUER RE-AKT 100 YTH ice hockey helmet children’s model is made using the latest technological developments of the company and is distinguished by high protective properties, as well as easy to use.The two-piece helmet shell is made of lightweight, impact-resistant, polycarbonate material. The two shells are displaced relative to each other, as a result of which the tightness of the helmet can be adjusted. The adjustable Spring-loaded Occipital Lock creates a comfortable fit. Air vents located in the helmet shell allow heat and moisture to quickly escape from the head and provide fresh air to create an optimal microclimate inside the helmet. The inside of the helmet is lined with triple density foam, which effectively absorbs impact energy. The applied protection system Suspend-Tech reduces the rotational force of the tangential impact. This system uses floating pads made from Poron XRD foam and located at three strategic points. The Poron XRD foam used in this protection system is a lightweight, pliable material that dissipates up to 90% of impact energy, providing effective head protection for the player. The floating pads remain stationary on impact, and the helmet shell with shock-absorbing filling is displaced relative to the head by a small angle, as a result the impact force is absorbed and the necessary protection is created.Ear protection is provided by transparent rubberized elements. The internal filling of the helmet as a result of treatment with bactericidal impregnation Microban does not emit unpleasant odors. Moisture-wicking forehead pad prevents sweat from getting into your little hockey player’s eyes. The quick release chin strap is designed for easy donning by younger players. The adjustable, four-position J-clips and Adjustable Top clips allow the RE-Akt mask to be securely attached to the helmet. The mask is made of high-strength steel, withstands hits from the puck, club and provides a good view. The chin cup is made of triple density foam and Poron XRD foam and is HECC, CSA certified and CE compliant.
