Mid – The popular pocket choice on any level. Middle pockets provide good ball retention and a descent release. This is a great pocket for shooters who are looking to light up the cage.

Low – Popular pocket for attackmen and players looking to carry the ball a lot. Low pockets provide great ball retention but the release will be slower than that of the Mid or High pocket. Great for players looking to be a dodger and ball carrier.

Mesh v. Traditional?

The benefits of mesh over traditional pockets are simple. The vast majority of stick technicians can fix or restring a mesh pocket easier and faster than traditional. We have watched the trend to mesh over the years and it is remarkable. The reason, in addition to the one mentioned already, is the advent of hard mesh gives many of the benefits of traditional (i.e. pocket conformity) without the problem associated with maintaining a traditional pocket. Hard mesh pockets break in quicker and are not as susceptible to weather. When leather gets wet, the pocket stretches and sags and when they dry, they get stiff and tight. Soft mesh is easier for beginners but will “bag out” with hard passes at higher levels of the game.

Moranz makes late save to preserve Syracuse’s tie with Connecticut

Phil Wheddon counts on his goalies to make one big save per game. With less than three minutes remaining in double overtime Monday, Mackenzie Moranz made that save.

Connecticut’s Danielle Gottwik stood with the ball at her feet and a chance to end the game on her next move.

Moranz dived to her left. Moranz extended her left arm, barely getting a piece of the ball to deflect it away and sending the Syracuse fans into a frenzy.

“I knew I had to make that save at that time, so I just did it,”Moranz said.

Syracuse (1-1-2) tied Connecticut (2-1-1) 1-1 in front of 815 fans after playing two overtime periods and 110 minutes on a sun-soaked Monday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium. SU’s chunks of possession were ended by ill-advised passes in the offensive third that led to Connecticut’s offensive attacks, which were snuffed out by the Orange’s defense to keep the game knotted.

“I’m disappointed in a tie,”Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon said. “I thought that we could have, and probably should have, won the game.”

Throughout the game, the Orange’s energy level fluctuated in the mid-80 degree heat. At times, SU peppered the Connecticut defense with consecutive passes that helped create threatening chances. At others, Syracuse struggled to clear the ball out in its own defensive end.

In the first 10 minutes of the game, the ball remained mostly on Connecticut’s side of the field. Alex Lamontagne, Eva Gordon and Jackie Firenze strung passes together, but couldn’t finish the plays with goals.

After holding off the Orange, Gottwik dribbled through the middle of the field and took a hard touch to her left, pushing the ball past Maddie Damm. With space atop of the 18-yard box, Gottwik’s shot found the back of the net. After 10 minutes of controlling the game, Syracuse found itself trailing 1-0.

But the defensive lapse in transition, caused by an offensive turnover, did not overshadow an otherwise solid performance by the Orange.

“We worked hard for 110 minutes,”Wheddon said. “Trying to make a more elaborate pass instead of just playing a simple pass, but all in all, I’m happy with our performance.”

SU’s only goal came off a header by Alexis Koval, a substitute who entered the game in the 36th minute and scored about a minute later. Orange forwards Maya Pitts and Sheridan Street also came off the bench and helped jumpstart the offense.

Junior forward Erin Simon said that Wheddon links the team’s energy with its communication. In overtime, when the circumstances were more urgent, the Orange picked up its interactions. After Moranz made the save of the game, Syracuse’s players yelled out while SU attempted to capitalize on a counter attack.

Occasionally SU held onto the ball for too long, the head coach added. If players take fewer touches while in possession of the ball, the speed of play will likely increase, leading to fewer turnovers. Dribbling less and making smarter passes is something that Syracuse will be working on in the coming week, Wheddon said.

“We caused problems for ourselves at times by loss of possession,”Wheddon said.

Though the turnovers occurred too often, it meant that the Orange was at least creating opportunities on offense.

Prior to Monday’s meeting, Syracuse was 1-18 all-time against UConn. The tie represents progress for SU, which has now only lost to the Huskies once in the past three seasons.

“It just means we’re improving,”Simon said. “This is the best team we’ve had since I’ve been here …We just have to finish opportunities.”

Just three days ago, the Reds won a ticket to the final of another English tournament – the League Cup, knocking out another Manchester club – City.

On the eve of the match, fears were caused by strained relations between fans of the two most popular clubs in England, which escalated after the scandal involving Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Manchester United captain Patrice Evra.

During the previous meeting of these clubs in the framework of the championship of England, the Uruguayan striker allegedly insulted a black footballer of the French national team, for which the English football association suspended him for eight matches.

This decision caused a storm of indignation in the camp of the “red”, and before the match, both coaches tried to reassure the fans, urging them to focus on the game, and not on football scandals.

However, despite the warnings of the coaches, the home stand from the first minutes dragged on the song “There is only one Suarez”, to which the guests responded with a “chant” “Come back when you win 19 [England titles]”.

Scholes’s second youth

The match began under the dictation of the home team, who had knocked out another Manchester club, City, from the English League Cup the day before.

Liverpool midfielders Maxi Rodriguez and Steven Gerrard tried their luck with long-range and close-range shots, respectively, but Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea got in the way of the ball.

The heated atmosphere in the stands of the Anfield stadium, apparently, carried over to the players: by the middle of the half, the rivals did not spare each other in tackles and single combats. Liverpool players were especially good at this.

The advantage, however, remained in the hands of Manchester United players, and shortly before the whistle for the break, they converted it.

Taking advantage of a rare defensive error, United right-back Rafael shot the ball from the right flank and the pass was skillfully rounded out by Korean midfielder Park Ji Sunn: 1-1.

After leveling the score, Alex Ferguson’s charges continued to press on Reina’s goal in the second half. Giggs ‘flank canopy caused a turmoil in the Reds’ defense, but Valencia was unable to take advantage of it, breaking through the target.

Liverpool responded with a sharp lunge, which ended with a shot by Andy Carroll: judging by the repetitions, the ball touched the hand of the Manchester United player, but the referee regretted the guests and did not appoint a penalty.

Pressure point

On the other side of the pitch, United striker Danny Welbeck had a great chance: the young striker gracefully threw the ball over the left goal Reina, but defender Skrtel intervened in the episode and defused the situation.
