In the postgame celebration with his team, the folksy Pittman made a reference to turning up the volume on the juke box, a musical vending machine that probably few of his players have ever actually seen. That phrase went viral in Hogland.

“I didn’t know it would become a T-shirt,” Pittman said as his team prepared to host Mississippi State on Saturday. “It was my second game. Just seeing the kids’ faces and the relief in the locker room. Honestly I didn’t know how long the streak was. I didn’t know how far it went. But just seeing the kids and how excited they were about winning is what I remember.”

Iowa State (5-3, 3-2 Big 12) almost certainly needs to win out and get lots of help from other teams to fulfill preseason predictions of a return to the conference title game. Texas (4-4, 2-3) is on a three-game losing streak under first-year coach Steve Sarkisian and trying to avoid its longest since Mack Brown’s 2010 team dropped four in a row.

“When you think about big picture, there’s never been a great triumph without a struggle,” Sarkisian said. “At some point, to triumph and do something special, you have to struggle. And clearly we’re in the midst of the struggle. The only way to get over that hump and to get through it is to have grit and determination and perseverance and then ultimately break through, and I believe that we will.”

The Longhorns’ last three losses have been maddening. They’ve squandered double-digit, second-half leads against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor.

Defensive lineman Moro Ojomo preached patience but also said he and his teammates must not become numb to losing.

“First of all, when you think about dynasties, dynasties are built over time,” Ojomo said, according to the Austin American-Statesman. “If we’re being completely honest, this atmosphere is, in a way, a bit of an impatient atmosphere. I mean, I can understand why. It’s 100,000 people, we’ve got the sixth-most millionaires in the U.S. We’ve got a lot of people, a lot of power behind it. But nothing happens overnight. Get to know your Bobcats opponent: Eastern Washington

BOZEMAN — In just a few short days the top two teams in the Big Sky Conference will be squaring off as No. 4 Montana State heads to Cheney, Washington to face off against No. 5 Eastern Washington. The Eagles are coming off an upset loss to Weber State and it only gets tougher from there, according to KREM sports director Brenna Greene.

“They’re in the middle of a very difficult slate right now,” Greene said of EWU. “Started with Weber State, now you’re onto Montana State. After that they play UC Davis. This is a huge span of their season for them and they really can’t afford to lose any other games. ”

Quarterback Eric Barriere is the identity of the Eagles and rightfully so. He leads the FCS in passing yards (3,297), passing touchdowns (30) and passing efficiency (181.12).

“He’s the best FCS player in the country,” said Greene. “A few weeks ago against Idaho, there was legitimate talk online about, ‘Should we be talking about this guy for the Heisman?’”

Barriere has skilled receivers to throw to. He has two receivers in the top 30 for receiving yards in redshirt junior Andrew Boston (629) and redshirt senior Talolo Limu-Jones (608). Freshman Efton Chism III leads the team with six receiving touchdowns. Overall, EWU has five receivers with at least 300 receiving yards.

“He’s got a really deep receiving corps,” Greene said. “Eastern has really leaned into the fact that you have guys like Cooper Kupp and Kendrick Bourne in the NFL right now. They’ve done a really good job of leaning into that and being like, ‘come here and play receiver and we can get you to the NFL. ’ I think that has really helped their receiving corps.”

Redshirt senior Dennis Merritt is getting it done on the ground for the Eagles. The stocky running back has 663 rushing yards on 5.2 yards per carry and a whopping 13 rushing touchdowns, which is second in the FCS.

“He can definitely kind of run through the line, but he’s broken off some pretty big runs this year,” the KREM sports director said. “I wouldn’t say he’s not quick by any stretch of the imagination.”

The Eastern Washington defense is ranked 66th in scoring defense, but here’s a few players who stand out.

“They have a linebacker duo of (redshirt senior) Ty Graham and Jack Sendelbach that has just been incredible — Calin Criner, one of their defensive backs, it’s basically those three in terms of tackling and then there’s just a huge drop off,” said Greene.

As for her prediction, Greene is picking the Eagles.

“I’m going 28-17,” she said.

One of these teams will go to 8-1 and the other to 7-2 as Montana State takes on EWU at 2 p. m. Saturday.

The Nation Network: Big Time, Baby!

I got a heads-up call on Tuesday and the news came out today about The Nation Network and Daily Faceoff being bought by Playmaker, a digital sports media company. I’ve seen some really big numbers attached to the transaction, but there’s one that stands out for me.

It’s one billion. That’s not my cut of the dough in this deal with Playmaker, it’s the total page views, give or take, generated by TNN and Daily Faceoff since 2007. First, I’m really happy for Wanye Gretz and Jay Downtown, two-thirds of the team with Adam Rozenhart who turned a labor of love into the reality that is Oilersnation in November of 2007. Second, today’s announcement really is yet another reminder of how time flies.

Oilersnation was friends and family only in terms of page views back in those early days when the same three guys approached me over lunch about the possibility of writing for the website. They’d write articles and later return to the site using bogus names and comment on what they’d just written to make it look like it was getting more traffic than it was. Sure.

That sketchiness aside, writing is what I do. Having been cut loose by the publisher at the Edmonton Sun for no other reason than the fact he could, I needed a gig after 18 years scribbling at the dailies. This was it. I made it sound like I was doing these guys a favor at that lunch when it was the other way around. I wrote an item about that for the website’s 10^th anniversary. It’s here.

TIME FLIES

The first item I wrote at Oilersnation hit the internet on March 7, 2008. The main photo was my son Sam, a toddler at the time. He’s 15 now and his second day of practice with the senior basketball team at his school is today. I loved the vibe, and a comment from that first item about travelling with Jim Matheson and Rod Phillips on the beat still makes me laugh. From somebody calling himself Randy Excelby: “You were wingman for Matty and Roddy? Just what kind of poon did those guys score?” That’s the time flies part.

Six months later, Sept. 15 of 2008, Jason Gregor’s first article at the nation was published and the momentum we’d already built grew even more. There’s been no looking back since as TNN added websites and entities over the years. Gregor was a pretty good writer for a radio guy even back then. Put it this way, Gregor was a better writer than I was a radio guy, yet he let me co-host his show for almost nine years.

In the years since, the TNN brand grew. The reach grew. The page views grew. Sell a little beer. Sell a little merch – and jump in with both feet when it comes to helping local charities. Here we are all these years later and, having survived the challenges of COVID, there is more growth to come under the Playmaker banner.

I don’t know much about the business end of Oilersnation. I’m a writer, not a business guy. Still, there’s a few things that I do know. First and foremost, I’ve had an opportunity to do what I do here for almost 14 years because of the three guys who took a goofy idea and busted their asses to coax it along and make it happen.

Horrid Starts are Making Life Difficult for the New Jersey Devils

It’s been a bit of a weird start for the Devils so far this season. As it stands, the team is 3-2-0, a .600 points percentage that projects to a total of about 98 points for a season. In terms of underlying stats, the team sits in the league’s top ten in share of 5-on-5 shot attempts (52.9% – 8th) and expected goals (55.3% – 4th). They’ve had good stretches of play and bad, but in the aggregate, the team has performed well enough, especially in light of some of their early injury issues. It’s a team in transition that has banked a few points and seems to be feeling things out in the early going. All in all, it should be a perfectly acceptable start for a team in the Devils’ position.

And yet… the vibes are all off in New Jersey. Angst is running high as people seem ready to jump ship on the season just five games in with the team sitting on a winning record. Why people are so jumpy about this team likely varies from person to person, but the injuries to various players, including their budding star center and both halves of their goalie tandem have something to do with it. The ghosts of catastrophically disappointing Devils teams of years past likely also play into it. The special teams, a major concern coming into the year, still stink out loud. Add in the fact that the rest of their stupid division doesn’t seem to want to lose any games, putting the team with the 3-2-0 record (again, a 98-point pace) in dead last, and it’s a bit more understandable that people are getting restless.

I think a lot of the concern may just arise from the way the past few Devils games have played out, though. Put simply, the Devils have nearly been run off the ice in the first period of all three of their games since Jack Hughes went down with an injury. Going back and looking at each of those three games, the numbers are stark out of the gate. Whereas the Devils jumped out to quick leads in their opening two games, the Devils have instead fallen behind in each of the past three, getting pummeled to the tune of 7-0 combined in the opening frame of their games versus Washington, Buffalo, and Calgary. The team played nominally better in the second and third periods of each of these games (and were arguably dominant in the final 40 versus Buffalo) but they’ve been chasing the score for the entirety of the past week of games. The breakdown of trailing/tied/leading is as follows for the past three matchups (via Natural Stat Trick):

• Leading: 0:00

They did, of course, win the Buffalo game in overtime (one of Buffalo’s two losses in seven games this season) but watching 183 minutes of hockey without having your team in the lead is inevitably going to raise an eyebrow. It would be one thing if these slow starts could be chalked up to some bad bounces or goalie letdowns but the Devils really have been getting clobbered in the opening 20 minutes of these games. Let’s take a look at the Devils’ results in the first from the opening five games and see just how limited the Devils have been out of the gate since the Washington game.

As you can see, there’s a pretty stark difference between how the Devils were starting games the first two nights (very well) and how they have been starting games since (horribly). This is not a huge sample of hockey, but putting up about 25% of the first-period 5v5 expected goals on three consecutive nights (to go along with 0% of the actual goals) is concerning and is definitely not going to result in a lot of fun times. Obviously, this shift coincides with the Devils’ most dynamic forward dropping out of the lineup, but if the Devils want this season to stay on the rails, they are going to have to figure out how not to get stuffed in a locker in the opening frame when Hughes is not playing.

It’s understandable that a team would take a step back when arguably their best player is not in the lineup, but plenty of teams deal with major injuries or absences and manage to not get their doors blown off out of the gate each night. Especially considering the early goaltending injury issues, they can’t expect a goaltender to keep them in the game every night while they hit the snooze button for the game’s entire first frame.

The issues have run up and down the entire lineup in these games and Lindy Ruff and his staff need to figure out how to get their players better prepared for energized opponents in the first periods of games. Dougie Hamilton and especially Ryan Graves have faltered at times since a great opening pair of games. Michael McLeod has been visibly overmatched forced into a top-six role. Other support players like Jesper Bratt and Yegor Sharangovich have struggled with some breakdowns early in games and have only been effective in fits and starts (while receiving some demotions and benchings for their troubles). The Mercer line has gotten beaten up at times. Nico Hischier has been solid enough (especially relative to his teammates) but not necessarily the gamebreaker they need him to be in the absence of Hughes.

These problems have all been particularly visible at the beginnings of games. Their top line maybe treading water while everyone else gets pantsed is not going to get it done and the Devils have been chasing each of these games from the start because of it. With a few days off and a trip on the road to help them perhaps clear their heads, hopefully we will see a Devils team that is much more prepared at the start of their upcoming games. They have admittedly run into some hot teams in this past week-plus with the Caps yet to lose a game in regulation, the Sabres being shockingly effective in the early going, and the Flames clobbering a couple of the Devils’ other Metropolitan Division rivals immediately before and after Tuesday’s game. That’s no excuse for yielding three times as many expected goals as you can muster in the opening frames of these games, though, especially with the benefit of rest between each one.

These rough starts have been noticeable enough that it has yielded a lot of audible grumbling around the fanbase and fair questions about whether this team can even remain relevant while Jack Hughes recovers from his shoulder injury. At a high level, a 3-2-0 start with generally decent underlying numbers is a good thing for this young team, but the Devils need to figure out how to start games in a hurry or that acceptable start will quickly devolve into a team staring down a lost season by the time the holidays arrive. The depth of the Metropolitan Division adds additional urgency to that situation. We know it will likely be a while before Hughes returns, so that means Lindy Ruff and this Devils squad will need to get themselves right and determine how they plan on leading games for more than 0% of the time over that period. I think they have the pieces to compete even without their star center, they just need to get better performances out of the gate from top to bottom from this roster and coaching staff.

On the evening of May 2009, the Russian and the Canadian scored a hat-trick, forever inscribing that day in the history of world hockey.
