90,000 At a slow pace, in a timid zigzag . .. On the new Russia-USA summit – Valdai Club
The deplorable state of bilateral relations increases the value of any meeting between the leaders of Russia and the United States – be it on the sidelines, on the sidelines, at breakfast, during a coffee break, or even on the run.Today is not the time when you can afford to make a spectacular pause in the expectation that the interlocutor will lose his nerves earlier. And it is not at all necessary that every interim meeting should lead to immediate concrete results. In the current situation, even a frank exchange of views on sensitive issues would already be a great achievement. However, the second full-scale Putin-Trump summit should not be a repetition of the first.
The second full-fledged Russian-American summit has been postponed to 2019.At the same time, it is far from obvious that it will take place in January or February – everything will depend on the poorly predictable dynamics of the internal political situation in the United States. But, as the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov recently optimistically noted, even before the end of the year, Trump and Putin could meet “on the sidelines” of various multilateral international events. Such as the celebration of the end of the First World War in France (November 11), the East Asia Summit in Singapore (November 14-15) and the G20 leaders’ meeting in Argentina (November 30-December 1).
The White House has already managed to announce that Trump will definitely not come to Singapore, and he seems to be going to Paris and Buenos Aires. Both events will take place after the midterm elections to the US Congress (November 6), which should fix the new alignment of political forces in Washington. Before the elections, it would have made no sense to meet in any case: Trump will not be able to squeeze out any dividends for himself and for his party from a meeting with his Russian counterpart, but to run into another noisy scandal at home is like nothing to do.
The results of the November elections will untie or, on the contrary, will tie the hands of the American president even more in many areas, including with regard to interaction with Moscow. It is already clear today that the Democrats will not succeed in winning by “knockout”, having received a majority in both chambers (as was the case, for example, in 2006 under George W. Bush); in the Senate, the positions of Republicans and Trump personally are likely to strengthen even more. But the Democrats are quite capable of seizing control of the House of Representatives; such a victory “on points” is capable of further shifting the balance of power in US foreign policy from the White House to the Capitol, with all the ensuing negative consequences for Russian-American relations. In addition, it does not take much discernment to predict that all dissatisfied with the outcome of the elections will easily find a universal scapegoat in the face of an evil and omnipresent Russia.
Thus, the political background for the interim meetings of the Russian-American “on the margins” does not look very encouraging. And the impressions of the recent summit in Helsinki from the Washington political establishment were, to put it mildly, not very positive. Let’s not forget that in the next two or three months, additional reasons for mutual discontent are quite possible – a new round of sanctions, US military actions in Syria, increased American pressure on Iran, aggravation of the situation in eastern Ukraine, and so on.All this does not give grounds for particular optimism.
Andrey Kortunov
The last meeting of the Russian and American presidents in Helsinki became a hit of the summer political season, eclipsing even the recent US-North Korean summit. The first full-fledged round of bilateral talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump evoked a wide variety of emotions – from bright hopes for the restoration of strategic arms control mechanisms to panic fears about the future of transatlantic relations.
However, it is the deplorable state of bilateral relations that enhances the value of any meeting between the leaders of Russia and the United States – whether it be on the sidelines, on the sidelines, at breakfast, during a coffee break, or even on the run. Today is not the time when you can afford to make a spectacular pause in the expectation that the interlocutor will lose his nerves earlier. And it is not at all necessary that every interim meeting should lead to immediate concrete results, all the more so – to be accompanied by a press conference or other public summing up.In the current situation, even a frank exchange of views on sensitive issues would already be a great achievement.
Apparently, after the November US elections, the topic of “Russian intervention” will somewhat lose its urgency in Washington, which will make it possible to focus on less toxic issues, including strategic arms control, nuclear nonproliferation, the fight against international terrorism, and interaction in resolving regional crises ( Syria, North Korea and even Afghanistan). An approximate agenda of possible meetings “on the margins” began to emerge during the Geneva consultations of John Bolton and Nikolai Patrushev on August 23, but only in the most general form.
It is very important that any meetings “on the sidelines” become stepping stones to the next full-fledged Russian-American summit. The second summit should not be a repetition of the first – from the summit, in contrast to by and large non-binding discussions “on the margins”, both sides are waiting for concrete results.
Much will depend on how intense the Russian-American dialogue turns out to be in the coming months and even weeks at the level of the two presidents’ trusted representatives, as well as at lower levels, despite the heightened nervousness that inevitably accompanies any election campaign in the United States. Even casual improvisations and impromptu “on the sidelines” of multilateral events in Paris or Buenos Aires will require careful preliminary study. In general, quoting the now almost forgotten Russian revolutionary L.Martov, “with a slow step, a timid zigzag, without being carried away, adapting, if possible, then carefully, quieter forward …” But still forward, not backward.
Journal of International Affairs – Zigzags of American Politics in Syria
Kurds bid farewell to American infantry.
Photo vedeng.co
Two presidents – the United States and Turkey – having talked on the phone the day before, each made their own, but generally general, decision that the Americans leave the northeastern regions of Syria, leaving the local Kurds face to face with the advancing Turkish army.
And from the south, the government troops of the Syrian Arab Army are also pulling up here.
Erdogan would need to solve two problems – to designate his success for the sake of internal use, and also to rein in the Kurds so that from here, from the north-east of Syria, they would not pose a military threat to Turkey. Therefore, Erdogan calls his military operation “The Source of Peace”.
Trump said on the same day that it was time to leave Syria. “It’s time for us to get out of these ridiculous endless wars and bring our soldiers home,” the US president wrote on Twitter. In his opinion, let now Turkey, Europe, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and the Kurds “have to cope with this situation” – “Trump says Turkey, Europe, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and the kurds will now have to figure the situation out “.
And a number of observers have already felt in this phrase a provocative hint that the Americans are simply pushing here those countries that have put a lot of effort in recent months to reach a political settlement in Syria after several years of intervention. And Trump explicitly states that the US armed forces will not support and in any way participate in the Turkish military operation in northern Syria, and will not be near the site of it.
Take a look – the Yankees quickly left their base in these parts, abandoning the Kurds, who at one time had been promised both help and support from Washington:
An American army base in Syria, abandoned a few hours ago.
Photo baladi-news.com
Thus, Trump nevertheless kept his word, uttered back in December 2018, when he announced the withdrawal of his troops from Syria.
Kurds, for their part, announced the withdrawal of US forces from the Syrian-Turkish border. They emphasize that “the United States approved of Turkey’s invasion of northeastern Syria.” And, according to a representative of the Kurdish “Forces of Democratic Syria”, the withdrawal of American troops from the border cities was a “stab in the back” for the Kurds. The United States withdrew its military from the Syrian-Turkish border in northeastern Syria, “thereby failing to fulfill its obligations” to the Kurds.
The last remark is another admission that “allied relations with the United States” are not even worth the paper on which the Yankees sign them, betraying another partner at the moment when it is dictated by their interests: “Nothing personal, it’s business” …
The representative of the Kurds, Mustafa Bali, said that the withdrawal of the American military from their positions would put the Kurds in a situation of “direct clash” with the Turkish army, and the Kurds intend to defend themselves “by any means.” This was followed by Erdogan’s response that the Turkish army could use aircraft.
The situation is expected to change within the next few days. But, as Trump noted, there are interests in this region not only of Turkey, but also of Russia, Iran and Iraq, allied with it today. This means that military action against the Kurds is not a fact yet. There is time for negotiations – for example, through intermediaries from the named countries.
And while the situation is unfolding there, right on the eve of the Yankees’ departure, the press recalled an interview with the former director of the French intelligence service DGSE (Direction générale de la Sécurité extérieure) Alain Chouet, in which he, in particular, revealed the role of Westerners in the Syrian tragedy …Is it a coincidence that now someone reminded about this interview?
Alain Chouet ( in photo ) noted: “France has severed all DGSE ties with the Syrian services. That the political power wanted to break with the Syrian regime is a decision that it can take. But the role of intelligence agencies is to – if necessary – maintain a separate channel of communication. When the Syrian services tried to restore the covert channel, they were categorically refused. Our job is to keep in touch with people who are out of reach. We are neither judges, nor policemen, nor diplomats, so let’s talk to Syrian agents … With Libya and Iraq, we also lost some good agents in recent years. Today we are blind, we have nothing left of these three countries. ”
This interview is interesting because there are still a lot of details of what happened, that a confession was made: even the NATO intelligence services, one of which is the French DGSE, received an order to “not keep in touch” with Assad’s Syrian government intelligence services, and in addition, with informants from Libya and Iraq. Can we assume that all this time decisions in Western capitals, in particular in Paris, were made on Syria on the basis of anything but information from our own intelligence? Did the scouts read the newspapers there carefully? Or did you work on the blogosphere? ..
Does it mean that the “zigzags” of the US policy in Syria – either “we are friends with the Kurds” and occupy the north-east of Syria, or “we are leaving there” – are based, in particular, on the fact that they did not listen to intelligence? Rather, she was absent where she was supposed to work.
It can be seen that the result of the American campaign on Syrian soil was ineffective. Perhaps that is why Trump gave the command “Let’s go!”, So as not to get into an even more difficult situation, from which his G.I. could return to his native land with a “load of 200”.
Remember “17 Moments of Spring”, when a German general, traveling with Stirlitz in a train car, described the American warfare as follows: “… they think that the war can be won by bombing alone. They will build up their technical power and drown in it.She will decompose them like rust. They will decide that they can do anything ”.
It seems that this is especially evident in Syria.

90,000 traitorous convicts who killed hundreds of people in the years of famine
For besieged Leningrad, the winter of 1941 – 1942 turned out to be the most terrible: Soviet citizens massively died of hunger, perished during hostilities. In the same period, a gang appeared in the city, robbing their own compatriots. Its participants were not familiar with the concepts of “mercy” and “philanthropy”: they mercilessly doomed hundreds of people to death. The gang was called “Zig-Zag”, and its members were convicts – traitors to the Motherland.
The famous Leningrad Zig-Zag gang killed people and engaged in fraud. Thanks to counterfeit food ration cards, its members obtained over 10 tons of food. Convicts worked for the Germans, forged documents, stole. They deprived hundreds of residents of besieged Leningrad of bread, while 1 person per day could eat no more than 125 g of this valuable and vital baking.
How the investigators approached the Zig-Zag gang
On February 21, 1942, a call rang in a division of the NKVD of Leningrad: the head of a grocery store was in a hurry to provide important information. She said one customer brought 550 sugar stamps and 176 bread stamps, stating that all of these were for the little ones.At the same time, the woman offered the manager 8 kg of bread and 1.5 kg of sugar if she would help her. Of course, it was impossible to resist such a temptation during the famine. The manager accepted the offer from the woman, but nevertheless turned to the NKVD.
Sergeant Alexander Mikhailov was sent to the grocery store. He waited for the woman with the coupons to come and went with her to her house. In the apartment he found a suitcase full of bread and coupons for another 90 kg of bread. The woman with the coupons turned out to be Nina Petrovicheva, an employee of shop # 2 of the Smolninsky District Food Office. She claimed that a stranger asked her to shop, promising a loaf for help. However, the woman’s neighbors said that she was visited by one man in civilian clothes and one in military uniform. Alexander Mikhailov decided to wait for them at Nina Petrovicheva’s apartment. Soon the men appeared on the doorstep, and the sergeant invited them to go to the department. However, the men attacked him with a knife, wounded him and fled.Alexander Mikhailov rushed after them, and with the help of a locksmith of the tram depot named. Blokhin was able to detain a man in civilian clothes.
The detainee had a receipt in his pocket from a certain Anna Chekur that she had received money for the sale of clothes. The woman was found and interrogated, then her apartment was searched. Investigators found a large sum of money with demands to food bases to issue food, as well as various fake forms. Investigators realized that they were on the trail of a large gang, but did not know that they were working for the Germans.
The history of the creation of the Zig-Zag gang
The famous Leningrad gang “Zig-Zag” was formed in 1941 in the camp No. 32 in the Leningrad region, worked under the leadership of Vitaly Kosharny, who served a sentence for forging documents twice. Vitaly Kosharny and his comrades – Baskin and Kirillov – fled when the next German air raid took place. Then they already had fake certificates of parole: they were made by Vitaly Kosharny himself. The group arrived in Leningrad in a stolen car: the driver was killed. In the city, the men stayed with a friend who worked in a canteen. Literally in 1 month, the gang was replenished: it already included 12 people, among whom were employees of trade enterprises.
Vitaly Kosharny decided to cooperate with the Germans. His comrade Kirillov went to the front, was wounded and captured by the Nazis. He immediately told them that he was ready to cooperate, and ended up in a sabotage school in Gatchina, the graduates of which are punishers, policemen, traitors to the Motherland. Kirillov was sent to Leningrad, provided with a walkie-talkie and typographic fonts. The Zig-Zag gang began to work on the instructions of the Abwehr.
Vitaly Kosharny began to forge food coupons. Grocery store managers helped to sell fakes. When the inhabitants of besieged Leningrad died of hunger right on the streets, the criminals stocked up on bread, cereals, butter, sugar, even chocolate and alcohol. Their profit amounted to about 17 tons of food.
How the Zig-Zag gang was “covered”
Curators of the Abwehr radioed out instructions to the members of the Zig-Zag gang.Once they received a task – to contact a German intelligence agent who arrived in Leningrad. Vitaly Kosharny and Kirillov decided to meet him at the safe house. However, neighbors reported the appearance of strangers in the house to the police. A district police officer arrived at the address, whom Vitaly Kosharny and Kirillov mistook for an agent. The district police officer asked the bandits to show their documents, but they attacked him, killed him and fled without waiting for the agent. However, they did not know that he had already given evidence to the NKVD.
Soon the whole Zig-Zag gang was “covered”. While the case was being considered, one bandit died. Vitaly Kosharny and 5 others were accused of organizing a gang and aiding the Germans, another 10 people were accused of encroaching on socialist property.
On June 30, 1942, all members of the Zig-Zag gang were shot.
