Bound by Flame: a song of ice and fire
The French studio Spiders has been trying to make the role-playing game of their dreams for the third year in a row, experimenting with the setting, like in Mars: War Logs, then with characters, like in Of Orcs and Men . Comes out with mixed success. With the plot, characters and dialogues in the RPG from Spiders, everything is in order, but with the gameplay, to put it mildly, not very much. In Bound by Flame, the developers went for broke, trying to borrow the best elements from other RPGs, but staying true to their own style and storytelling manner.

This world is doomed. The war, which lasted 15 years, is coming to an end. The remnants of the armies of humans and elves are hiding in the last refuges, which will soon fall under the onslaught of hordes of the living dead, led by the Ice Lords from the North. Bound by Flame is not the first game in which the developers decided to put two personalities in one body. The demon is perhaps the most interesting of your interlocutors, although after a while you will probably have no one to talk to. You will either become a demon yourself, losing your human essence, and at the same time the ability to wear a helmet, or suppress your second essence, trying to remain human. The demonic form gives good bonuses if you choose the mage career. Each of your choices will affect the story of the game and the appearance of the hero, almost like in Mass Effect.
In addition to the demon inside, you also have traditional partners, and you can only take one of them into battle.
All of them are quite expected – an innocent magical girl, a stern knight who speaks of himself in the third person, an unshaven renegade elf, a suspicious witch in a too revealing dress (hello, Morrigan). Bound by Flame has a custom crafting experience. Accessories and additional elements that give bonuses can be added to any armor and any weapon. For armor – shoulder pads, thigh pads and decoration on the belt, for gloves – elbow pads, for boots – knee pads.
For weapons, you can make a new guard and pommel. The number of options depends on the specific subject, but it is quite large. In general, it turned out to be more realistic than embedding pebbles in special slots.
Bound by Flame is perhaps the best RPG from Spiders to date. Perhaps the game has too many borrowings from other projects and against the backdrop of the recent Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, Dark Souls II and The Elder Scrolls Online, it is a little lost, but in general, Bound by Flame deserves the attention of fans of story-driven action/RPGs.
