THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18, <strong>2021</strong> VOLUME CXXVIII | ISSUE V <strong>Rumor</strong>s spread quickly on campus and tend to linger. In this edition, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Crimson</strong> <strong>White</strong> confirms or debunks some of the most notorious rumors that surround our campus. CW / Laney Davis How does the Machine survive at UA? ISABEL HOPE ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR He had heard rumors of the Machine, a 100-year-old underground political organization of sorority and fraternity members that controls campus elections. When he walked up to a Student Government Association table to ask about it, he was told the Machine didn’t exist. McGehee, who graduated from the University in 2020, was an independent Senator who served on the SGA Financial Affairs Committee. He also worked on multiple campaign teams for independent candidates who were not Machine affiliated. “I guess my assessment of the Machine’s influence on SGA elections is that they don’t have an influence,” McGehee said. “<strong>The</strong>y run the elections.” Machine actions over the years have included burning crosses, burglary, vandalism and boycotts of local businesses. <strong>The</strong> Machine was investigated by the FBI in 1983 after non-Machine SGA President John Bolus discovered that his phone was being tapped. <strong>The</strong> SGA was temporarily shut down after a non-Machine presidential candidate reported being assaulted in 1993. In 2013, a school board member filed a lawsuit claiming the Machine illegally influenced a city election by incentivizing students with alcohol and concert tickets. In the ’90s, the Machine allegedly stole over 4,000 copies of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Crimson</strong> <strong>White</strong> after learning that an expose on the organization was going to be printed the day before an SGA election. <strong>The</strong> Members Alex Smith, who graduated from the University in 2018, was an SGA Senator and member of the Machine. Smith said she was directed to the Machine after rushing Phi Mu, a Machine-affiliated sorority and expressing interest in student government. “I knew it was kind of my key or my ticket to obtaining an SGA position if I wanted one,” she said. “I was assured that it was nothing bad. I was told that it was a group of people comprised of members of the Greek system that essentially looked out for other members of the Greek system, kind of like a voting bloc.” Smith said the Machine became a larger part of her life once she won a seat in the Senate. She was told by Machine representatives within her sorority that she was part of a “select, secret group of senators” and not to tell anyone about the meeting. “Once I got the OK from my Machine reps in my house to run and I obtained a Senate position, I became much more familiar with the Machine, considering that I became one of their senators,” she said. “Over the span of a couple of months I became more familiar with the inner workings and what exactly being a part of the Machine entailed. To me, it was much more than just a voting blocc. It was a way that members of the Greek system coerced those in power to vote a specific way.” McGehee echoed this sentiment. “I did overhear a Machine-affiliated graduate senator, when we were going into a Senate meeting, say, ‘I’ve been instructed on what to vote on tonight,’” he said. “It was a joke, but that’s literally what they do. <strong>The</strong>y’ll send the text message and be like ‘Hey, this is how we’re voting tonight.’” A freshman sorority member, who chose to remain anonymous, said she became immediately aware of the Machine while rushing this year. “<strong>The</strong>y sat us [sorority members] down the week before we got initiated, and they were like, ‘This is how we are involved in the Machine,’ or ‘the group,’ as they called it,” she said. “<strong>The</strong> girl who is directly involved with the Machine told us who she was and to the capacity she’s involved in it. This was right when homecoming elections were coming up.” She said the Machine representative encouraged them to vote for presumably Machine-backed candidate McLean Moore. She decided not to participate in the “24/7” homecoming campaign for Moore. “I just chose not to be a part of that,” she said. “Not to put myself in that position publicly. I didn’t post any of her graphics for things. I didn’t associate myself with the Machine-backed candidate.” McGehee said every sorority involved with the Machine has a representative who reaches out to members to tell them who the Machine-backed candidate is in every election. He drafted an amendment while he was in office to make election results public on the website in perpetuity. He had approval from the then-SGA president and other Machine-affiliated people. <strong>The</strong> amendment passed the Senate, but once Machine members realized it would make results public that “included reference to the Machine,” it lost their support. “<strong>The</strong>y had reps going through houses saying that reporting the voting results publicly was supporting cyberbullying,” he said. McGehee said there is a “weird air” in the SGA offices when it comes to the Machine. “You’re not allowed to talk about it,” he said. “Today the parliament has united in solving the most important issue – it has allocated 800 million hryvnia for the purchase of oxygen concentrators to help Ukrainians survive the pandemic. This is undoubtedly one of the few positive steps that the current parliament has taken, ”Yuriy Boyko stressed.
The co-chairman of the faction noted that this law amends the state budget of Ukraine for 2021 and creates a new budget program “Centralized procurement of oxygen stations for supporting healthcare institutions”.
According to him, the provision of basic hospitals with oxygen stations will reduce the demand of hospitals for oxygen in cylinders and reduce the load on the logistics network. He stressed that OP-ZZh will insist that such decisions continue to be made quickly and in a consolidated manner.
“Our common duty is to provide the necessary funding for medicine and find funds in order to support Ukrainians in an epidemic, help them fight the disease, give them the opportunity to breathe,” the MP said.
The politician recalled that the authorities completely failed preparations for a new wave of the epidemic, although experts warned about the appearance of a more infectious strain of coronavirus six months ago. And now he is urgently trying to correct a critical situation in medicine.
“We will always defend the interests of people, propose and vote for decisions that are important for citizens. I am convinced that the parliament is obliged to vote for such initiatives unanimously so that people do not suffer, ”Yuriy Boyko summed up.

The International Monetary Fund plans to create additional reserve assets totaling $ 650 billion. This should ease the recovery of the world economy from the worst recession since the Great Depression, said in a statement by Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the Fund.

- It is planned by June to submit a formal proposal to the IMF Executive Committee for the allocation of $ 650 billion based on an assessment of the needs of the IMF member countries.

Why does the brand need SMM? Why does SMM need design?
SMM is often perceived as a convention. This is no longer about meaningless giveaways for repost and about cat photos (which still bring a lot of likes, but are not associated with the brand and do not give results).
SMM is a digital communications tool. And like any advertising tool, SMM has goals: to broadcast the values of the company, to increase brand awareness and, of course, loyalty to it.It is important that promotion in social networks is a meaningful activity (it was built on something, somehow went beyond advertising and “fun” and poured into something concrete). A digital strategy will help with this 🙂
The success of brand promotion in social networks depends not only on high-quality content and a competent strategy. Design is one of the important tools. If in a few seconds the visual message manages to evoke the necessary emotions and interest, the ranks of subscribers, or even customers, will replenish.If not, business will prefer cat memes. Good design in SMM is exactly what will grab attention and interest the viewer. And, of course, we must remember that in the feed of people we are not fighting with competitors. We fight clothing brands, people’s friends, bloggers, famous people and people who don’t want to see ads. Therefore, the content must either be of high quality and stand out, or we drain the budget.
For really high-quality visual communication, it is recommended to create a design strategy that will take into account all the nuances.At the stage of identity, this is a brand book. Do you think it’s worth always following design trends?
I am quite skeptical about trends and their blind use. Trends are just trends (and most often they are used by many). Therefore, if you blindly follow trends, it means to be like everyone else.In addition, this approach will often require updates, since trends transform and change from year to year.
I am for a meaningful design that will solve business problems and help build brand communication with the consumer, using its unique “voice” that will speak a visual language close to the target audience of the brand. That is, if it is a brand of cheap noodles, visual communication should also look inexpensive and visually “say” that the brand is accessible. And vice versa, if it is a brand of a high price segment, visual communication should correspond to this.
Based on your experience, what are the benefits of the CMM design that the design team is working on, and how does it differ from pre-built templates in editors like Canva?
Editors like Canva have tons of cool templates you can actually use. This will be especially easy for novice designers or SMM specialists. But editors are not a substitute for full-fledged high-quality design, informed decisions and a consistent visual style.Working in such editors is a set of beautifully designed templates. But, firstly, they can be spoiled if a person does not know the basic design rules, and secondly, templates for mass use are collected in such editors. Hence, it will be quite difficult to stand out with a design with a ready-made template available to many other users.
Such editors are useful when a designer has developed a unique visual style for social networks, created templates that are open only to brand employees, which they can use in the future without a designer.
What is effective and ineffective design?
Most people outside the design industry have a number of associations with the word design. These are, as a rule, “creative”, “minimalism”, “something beautiful”. Plus, most people think design is subjective. This is not true. Design is often confused with art, so one is transferred to the other.
In design, there are a number of rules that must be followed to create a quality product.
How to understand that design is effective? It is created to solve a specific problem, be it a logo for a new company, a website, or to attract attention on social networks.It doesn’t matter how good a design looks if it doesn’t solve a specific problem. Good design allows a company to manage its brand, change public opinion to match the ideal image of the company.
A company’s target audience can range from immensely broad masses to a very small niche. In general, the wider the audience, the clearer and simpler the design should be. Therefore, you can see how many companies, as they grow, lose their “soulfulness”. This happens because some of the design techniques that work for small niches are not suitable for a large audience, they are sacrificed to attract more people.On the other hand, when the audience is smaller and more specific, unusual features attract more people.
If we talk about ineffective design, it is design (no matter how beautiful it is) that does not solve the company’s problem.

I really like the Instagram of Khadyzhensky beer. Photos in your account are a symbiosis of the Roman Empire and Khadyzha. Or a fantasy about what would have happened if the most popular drink of the ancient Romans was not wine, but beer.Models in robes, tunics, with laurel leaves and wreaths of thorns, an obligatory attribute – several bottles of “Khadyzhensky” and dried fish. As descriptions – sublime odes to the healing drink. It became popular thanks to nostalgia for the past, packed in a new format. Plus unusual plots and really high-quality production. If you remember all the social networks and communication of beer, this is mainly male friendship and everything in this spirit. Therefore, thanks to such an unconventional approach in communication, Khadyzhensky beer gained popularity and in 16 days 1300 people subscribed to its instagram, where users confessed their love to beer and posted notes on their pages.For some unknown reason, the creators stopped posting, but I think if they continued, the number of subscribers would continue to grow.
A striking example of a company that is not afraid to be funny.
Dennys Dinner is a company that includes humor in its SMM strategy. They have a very original and funny Instagram page. The brand has a really fun account to follow. I want to note that in this account the emphasis is not on impeccable design work, but on funny, slightly sloppy pictures, which plays into the hands of the brand within the framework of this communication.
And, probably, one of the most beloved accounts, this is Old Spice. Old Spice is known for its unceremonious social media wit, which is reflected in the photos the company posts. Sometimes a brand posts overly promotional posts, but removes them after a while to make sure the page looks good.
