OSAKA Field Hockey
OSAKA are a relatively new brand on the field hockey stick scene, but have made a big splash into the game. Based in Europe they have work very hard not only on their stick technology but a lot on their styling, with the aim to create a brand that is fashionable as well as functional for hockey enthusiasts. This being the case they have one the largest clothing and accessory ranges among the field hockey brands.
As far as stick range goes they have a 1,2,3 and 4 series which are the basic range, 1 being 100% fiberglass with no carbon, 2 series having 50% carbon, 3 series with 70% carbon and the 4 series with 90 %, with options for bow type available in some and most being very light sticks between 540g to 570g.
The OSAKA “Series” range heavily focuses on the look and styling of the stick as well as the construction. The elite range from OSAKA is the “PRO TOUR” a 100 % Japanese carbon stick with high power, coming in super light or just a light option which is almost 600 grams, these sticks are quite pricey but high quality.
Ritual Field Hockey
This relatively new elite level band has sprung up out of the mind of Australian Nathaniel Nelson and is now is popular among many skilled international players. Ritual prides itself on simple quality designed sticks using Toray Japanese carbon and high denier rated carry gear. Ritual only have three main models for adult sticks and one for junior, the range is as follows:

Origin 95: Top of the line, 95% Carbon sticks, 5% Kevlar. Within this model there are 5 different variants to choose from, differing in thickness, weight, head angle, bow, balance etc, to help you choose the stick that best suits you.
Origin 75: The advanced but more affordable stick option here, 75% Carbon, 20% Fiberglass and 5% Kevlar. There are four sticks available in this range with pretty much the same technologies as the Origin 95 sticks, just not the same material composition.

Some interesting features of the Ritual stick design are, the square edge, this is quite different to traditional field hockey stick edges which are normally a semi circle going onto a flat face giving a single edge each side of the stick. The thinking behind this new design is to give players more control and power when using the side edge for hitting.

This brand has been around for a while in field hockey and is well respected, with strong roots in Australia and New Zealand. This manufacturing giant has its sticks made in Taiwan and packaged in China it claims the largest stick producer in the world. Whats the range like? Well as you would expect the range is massive, so many options you could spend a whole day just reading though the list it seems. Atlas really do try to provide a stick option for everyone from, tiny tots to international pros. They have a massive price range too which is helpful when you need to keep the budget in mind. The main ranges however are the International, ZX, Junior, Indoor and Goalie.
Atlas pride themselves on options of curve design in their sticks allowing players to choose between 5 different shapes, see here for more info. One thing to note with atlas sticks however, although they have excellence performance, they are not rated as a particularly hard wearing stick and may not be the most durable in the competition.

Princess Field Hockey
Going by the company name of Princess Sports Gear they are Dutch based company who have recently got into the field hockey stick game as of 2011. Despite this they have quickly become a popular and trusted international field hockey stick brand for quality high performance sticks. Princess are the major sponsor for the Holland national team, but also sponsor other international players.
Their range consists of mainly 6 different “Star” sticks, the 2 start to 7 star. Starting from the 7 star each stick represents an amount of carbon composition. 7 star has 100% carbon making it a very stiff and powerful stick for elite players while the 2 star only has 10% carbon for beginning players and kids field hockey.
Apart from the star system you should also be aware that Princess mostly uses 5 different moulds, each have a slightly different shape, bow and weight which lets you get the stick that best suits.
In general molds one and three tend to be lighter weight while mould 2, 5 and 9 are heavier.
The newest stick style from Princess field hockey is the Boostiq, which is quite unique. It has a specialized rubber insert in the face of the head and shaft, designed to reduce vibrations when trapping and hitting as well as giving the player more control.

In recent years STX has stretched their expertise to field hockey and only produce composite sticks. TK was founded by Thomas Kille (TK), a young German field hockey player, who started off by modifying blank sticks with reinforced materials in his basement then selling them to local players. The first official TK stick was sold in 1985. TK is now a large international field hockey brand constantly at the forefront of stick technology.
TK’s stick current outdoor stick range consists of, Platinum, Synergy, Trilium and Mulberry.
Platinum sticks are TK’s most elite and feature cutting edge technology. OBO is a very unique brand, the New Zealand based company only produces field hockey equipment for goal keepers, making them a high quality specialist. They are the most expensive brand for sticks and goal keeper protective equipment but the design has had so many years behind it that you can rest assure it works, they also use very durable materials which means the gear tends to last. OBO do also offer a several different ranges for their sticks and their protective equipment.
BRABO FIELD HOCKEY

I will be honest and say when I first tried Mazon sticks back in juniors (late 90s) I wasn’t the biggest fan of the quality, however these days I think they have stepped it up a few notches and I would love a Mazon.

- Black Magic range, these are a high carbon composite stick that is both light and powerful for elite players. They have the technical features of Mazon’s latest innovations such as the THZ or Tomahawk Zone,TCZ (traction control zone), Reduction Vibration System (RVS) great for reduction shock in the handle, Kevlar Duo Zone, and high Torsion Stability. There are a variety of different options such as bow size and head shape within the range so check it out.
- Fusion Range: These sticks I would say are still high level sticks but not so expensive. The top stick, the Fusion 7000 in this range has almost all the same features as some of the Black Magic’s sticks so worth looking into as they are great value for money.
- Goal keeping: ProForce which is their high end elite sticks and the Z-Force range of sticks for goal keepers which is not quite as pricey.

Field hockey sticks are comprised of several different parts, so to determine which hockey stick is the best for you, it is important to familiarize yourself with each of its parts.
Grip. This is where you grip the hockey stick. The size and grip of the hockey stick is almost always dependent on what your needs are.
Handle. The top hand will be on the grip, but your control hand will be further down the stick. The length is what determines the distance between the grip and the handle.
Head. This is the part of the hockey stick that touches the ground. One side of the head is flat while the other is round which makes it easier for passing and shooting.
Heel. This is the curved part of the stick where it bends to connect to the stick’s toe. It doesn’t touch the ground.

Hockey is traditionally considered one of the most expensive sports in terms of equipment costs. If footballers only need leggings, boots, underwear and a uniform with a ball, then hockey players have a much larger set of protective equipment, both in terms of the number of elements and their complexity.Do not forget about the service life – modern professional-grade composite clubs break like matches.
Ice hockey is inferior to football in terms of audience and geographic coverage, but key markets in Canada, the USA, Scandinavia and Russia are still highly desirable. In addition, the specifics of the production of many elements of hockey equipment are similar to technologies in other sports – baseball (bats and traps), lacrosse (clubs and helmets), roller skates (skates), so many manufacturers are not limited to hockey exclusively.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, the market remained extremely competitive. The goalkeeping equipment of the Finnish Koho was in great demand, many field players chose the helmets of the Swedish company Jofa. Canadian CCM has gone through two bankruptcies in the 80s and 90s and more than one change of ownership. The Bauer Hockey brand quickly turned into Nike Bauer, and many were sure that the moment would soon come when the entire line of equipment would be transferred under the parent brand.
In 1998 CCM acquires the legendary ice hockey brands Jofa, Koho, Canadien, Heaton and Titan. Wayne Gretzky played with Titan sticks throughout most of his career. In 2004, the combined company is acquired by Reebok, which had not previously been represented in hockey (game jumpers at the Lillehamer Olympics were a one-time story).Almost immediately, the company’s management decides to stop production under all brands except CCM, and use the existing developments and models for a new line under the RBK Hockey label. This decision was largely dictated by the policy of the NHL, IIHF and IOC, according to which manufacturers of hockey equipment had to pay fees to tournament organizers for the opportunity to show their brands on television broadcasts. The logos of the companies that did not join the pool of suppliers were simply pasted over (note the helmet).
Naturally, the same was true of advertising budgets – why spend money on promoting 5 brands if you can concentrate your efforts on one or two?
As a result, by the mid-2000s, an interesting situation had developed on the hockey equipment market. The leaders were Nike Bauer and Reebok-CCM, which by that time had already been absorbed by German adidas, which was fighting Nike for leadership in the entire sports goods market. The Warrior brand entered the market, which in turn was owned by New Balance.Easton Hockey also held a strong position. The market seemed to come to equilibrium with 4 key players and 7-8 second-tier brands.
On February 21, 2008, Nike unexpectedly announced the sale of its Nike Bauer division to a group of private investors for $ 200 million. In 1994, Bauer was worth $ 395 million. Two years ago, the owners of the Bauer brand, who by that time had already bought several manufacturers of equipment for sports related to hockey (primarily lacrosse and baseball), announced the acquisition of control over Easton Bell Sports. Under the terms of the deal, baseball and softball divisions came under the control of Bauer’s parent company, Performance Sports Group (PSG), and hockey equipment continued to be branded Easton, albeit under license. A year and a half later, the hockey division was also under the control of PSG.In a press release on the merger, it was quite outspoken: “The Performance Sports Group has acquired all of Easton Hockey’s patents and we will be looking closely at all patents in other categories to identify elements that can be used to promote the Bauer Hockey product line.” … Reading between the lines, the days of the Easton brand are probably numbered.
As a result, there are now essentially 2 key players on the market – adidas and PSG, as well as 3-4 second-tier brands, the most famous of which remains Warrior.The Germans have been looking for buyers for the troubled hockey business for several years now (the motivation is about the same as that of Nike), and it is possible that CCM may end up in the hands of the same Performance Sport Group.
The reasons for this state of affairs are generally understood. Hockey is a very specific sport, equipment is sold with a small mark-up and you can only earn good money by selling a lot, and in a narrow market this means the absorption of competitors. Mission-Itech Hockey – SPbHL Media Portal
Mission-Itech Hockey was founded in 2004 as a result of the merger of two well-known hockey brands – Itech and Mission.Its leaders were the owners of the Minnesota Wild club – the Nagele family, the co-owner of the San Jose Sharks club – Kevin Compton and the founder of Itech – Robin Burns.
First, let’s talk a little about these two brands that existed separately.
Itech Hockey Brand
Montreal-based Canadian company Itech was founded in 1984 by former NHL player Robin Burns, who was the cousin of the famous coach Pat Burns. Until 2001, the company distributed its products mainly in the minor leagues, but subsequently, an innovative line of goalkeeper helmets allowed Itech to reach the NHL as well.
The company also produced protective gear for field players, but it was not as popular as its competitors.
