The majority of classes at the university are taught in Spanish, although a select few are taught in English.

The IENA Mexico Summer Camp Recruiting fair will give you the opportunity to recruit, interview and hire key staff member for your camp program. All of our participants attending the fair have already been screened and interviewed by our amazing staff members – all of whom have previous experiences at camps.

We believe that having the opportunity to meet our participants face to face will allow you to select from a wide variety of our fantastic camp staff.

Who attends our fair?

• Several hundred University students. While the majority are from the Puebla area, we have staff coming from many regions of Mexico
• University students looking to work in general kitchen roles, food preparation, maintenance, housekeeping, laundry as well as culinary students.
• Lifeguards, general counselors, trip leaders, ropes staff as well as many other camp counselor positions are often hired as well.
• Camps who are looking to hire anywhere from 6 to 60 camp staff from all over the United States.
• Representatives from the US Embassy in Mexico (which is a great step towards advocating the message and importance of camp to our government).

Important Information

Flights arrive on Thursday January 23rd to Puebla, Mexico and depart Sunday January 26th.
IENA will arrange for ground transportation from Puebla airport to hotel, fairs, etc. as well as some meals.
Hotel Accomodations: Holiday Inn Express, Puebla.
Camp Directors will have a table and 2 chairs at the fair. Camps may send up to 2 representatives (IENA will only credit 1 person for flight/hotel).
It is advisable for camps to bring a small display for their camp fair table to promote their camps.

Cosecha Summer Camp 2021
At The E.S.B. Mexican American Cultural Center

-In-Person Youth Camp for Ages 5-12
-Sessions are one week. Each week is a separate registration, by lottery system. Lottery results will be announced on May 25.
-Camp schedule:  Monday – Friday 8:00am-5:30pm, with optional pick up/ drop off from 7:30am and until 6pm.

The MACC will open in limited capacity to host an in-person cultural arts camp for youth. The camp will be conducted in small groups of 8 students with one group of teachers, and adhere to social distancing protocols. We provide our learners with opportunities to use Latinx history and the arts to think critically about the world around them. The camp explores themes of environmental and social justice, utilizing various arts techniques including (but not limited to): Animation; Digital Storytelling; ; MixedMedia; Puppetry; Illustration; Music; and Theatre for Young Audiences.

More Details on Summer Camp Registration:

Austin Parks and Recreation (PARD) will launch 2021 Summer Camp registration on April 19. This year there are two main options.
1. A free virtual program called Stay Creative
2. A fee-based, in-person Summer Camp at participating Recreation Centers, Nature-Based Sites and Cultural Centers.
 

COVID-19 Precautions

In accordance with federal, state and local health authorities, PARD has adopted modified guidelines for COVID-19 health and safety. All participants and staff must wear a mask and complete a daily wellness screening prior to entry. There will be one group or “pod” of no more than 10 people per room: eight youth plus one or two staff.

With limited summer camp capacity due to COVID-19, PARD encourages consideration of multiple summer camp options to provide increased access to the City’s reduced camp offerings for those who are disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
 

Lottery Registration

Parents can register April 19 through May 16 to be included in a random lottery drawing for a limited number of in-person summer camps.

During the lottery registration period, fees will display online as $0 because it’s free to register for the lottery. See the activity description for the fees required to participate in camp. Notification for Specialty Camps will be sent no later than May 25. Notification for General Recreation Camps will be sent no later than June 1. A $20 deposit per child, per camp will be required to secure the camp.

In addition, the Summer Playgrounds Program will offer free, in-person outdoor drop-in camps with limited capacity July 6 – August 13. This program is first come, first served on a daily basis.

Join ESB-MACC educators Lori Navarrete, Michelle de Santiago, and Gricelda Silva in a video tutorial on calaveras de azucar, or sugar skulls. The video will tell viewers about the origin of sugar skull making as a way to honor the deceased, as well as a complete recipe for making them and tips on decorating. The final part of the video includes a prerecorded Q & A by students in classrooms all over the U.S. The video was filmed with Nepris, a virtual classroom that broadcasts directly to schools, and was created as a step by step tutorial to coincide with the ESB-MACC’s Day of the Dead Festival.

Uprooted Dreams (Alebrijes)

On permanent display at the ESB-MACC is Uprooted Dreams (2012), a site-specific sculptural installation that features over 19 individual, brightly colored woodcarvings. For the artist Margarita Cabrera, the process and product of Uprooted Dreams provides an ongoing platform on which to build respect, equality, solidarity, and dignified ways of making art and creating community.

Tejano Music History

Tejano Music History: Students will learn the history of Tejano music such as its connection to German folk music (eg. the use of an accordion), and the differences within the genre of Tejano music amongst artists such as Flaco Jiménez and Selena Quintanilla.

Biliteracy Club Communities of Austin (BoCCa) is one of the ESB-MACC’s Latino Artist Access Programs (LAAP). BoCCa provides transformative learning spaces that support biliteracy and multiculturalism in creative and innovative ways. BoCCa focuses on a storytelling approach based on Latin American cultural heritage that embraces their linguistically diverse voices and highlights them through the performing arts and the use of digital media. The Bronze Community Band Project, a collaborator with Austin’s Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, continues their work in 2020. Last year, the Bronze Community Band Project offered a program to research, promote and preserve the bi-musical heritage of the Mexican American community. The program, free and open to the public, involves the research, preservation and presentation of the performance art of this music. This event is open to the pubic and there is no fee to participate. Volunteer participants receive hands on experience and will share in the harvest.

The Tejano Genealogy Society of Austin (TGSA), established in 1977, fosters excellence in genealogy through educational programs and projects that preserve, produce and disseminate knowledge of genealogical or historical value. TGSA preserves Tejano and Mexican-American heritage by assisting with genealogical research, promoting authors who write about Latinx history, raising awareness of Latinx history in schools and communities, and hosting and attending genealogy conferences, historical events, arranging for guest speakers.

Free Capoeira class and open Roda with Instructor Erick Salazar. This is a free class dedicated to the beauty of Capoeira, the Brazilian-African hybrid of dance, music and martial arts which aids children in working on their flexibility, rhythm and developmental coordination. In this class you will learn basic capoeira moves, music, and chants. At the end you will participate in “Open Roda” (Capoeira circle) were you will put in to practice what you have learned. This is an opportunity to experience Capoeira with no pressure, making this experience fun , entertaining and open to families and youth of all ages. No experience required. Wear comfortable clothing!

Mexico Trip | Miracle Mountain Ranch

Experience Mexico and recharge your walk with God!  Join us in ministering to the people of Rio Chico and the Pima Indian Village of Babicora. We will be doing day camps, construction work, providing medical care, distributing food and clothes, and sharing the Gospel. There will be sightseeing along the way, and stopping at places such as the Carlsbad Caverns. Tarahumara Ministries, a mission who has been leading trips for over 20 years, will be leading our team. We will celebrate Easter Sunday with the people in Mexico. You can expect hard work, challenges, stretching your comfort zone, opportunities to meet new people, hiking, lots of good Mexican food, bumpy roads with lots of twists and turns, learning more Spanish, a lot of children, challenging Bible teaching, and God to work in your heart. Where will we go?
First to a mission outpost called Rio Chico, and then on to the Pima Indian Village of Babicora. See the flyer for the full itinerary.

What will we do?

We are going to evangelize the whole village through “Message from the Mounts”, preaching while training horses to illustrate the principles of scripture.

We are also going to put on day camps for the Pima kids, do some construction work on a church, provide medical care, and distribute food and clothes.

When is the trip? March 28th – April 11th, 2021

What mission are we with? Tarahumara Ministries have been taking these trips for over 20 years, ministering to the native Indians high in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico.

How much money do I need? You will need $895 plus $40 in cash to buy a visa once in Mexico. This is the only expense not included in the $895. Spending money for snacks and souvenirs is also extra.

Passports or travel cards are required!

Goals for the afternoon camps:

1. Evangelize
2. Teach the kids Bible stories, and truths.
3. Play camp type games.
4. Teach the kids some English.
5. Learn some Spanish from them.
6. Do some crafts with the kids.

We will be doing various construction projects.

• Previous teams have constructed a greenhouse at Rio Chico
  and a water storage tank to help with watering the crops.
• In the village of Babicora, we added a concrete floor to a church building.
  All the mixing was done by hand and on the ground, and was wheel-barrowed into place and hand finished.

What is Babicora like?

• No electricity, toilets, showers, running water, or television.
• There are about 400 people in the village – many of them are small children.
• There are only a few Christians in the village, but the people are very friendly, especially the kids.
• We may stay in tents, on the open ground, or on the concrete church floor.

What do I need to bring?

• Passport, Bible, sleeping bag, for starters.

What should I expect?
Great fellowship, a time of focusing on spiritual things, spiritual encouragement, opportunities to serve others, hard work and various construction projects, building relationships with Mexican kids, to see some awesome sights at our National Parks and in the mountains of Mexico, some hiking and physical activity, lots of Bible discussion and focus, unexpected things to happen.

Programs — SOAC

The School’s Arts Education Program (AEP) enhances the education of underserved, low-income children and youth in East San José through culturally specific arts engagement activities and instruction.

Annually, the School serves 875 students (ages 6-18) through our AEP who would not otherwise have access to high-quality arts education, helping them to not only learn about a craft or instrument, but to also connect them to their peers, their families, their neighborhood, and their heritage.

Our AEP implements two channels of delivery: Summer Programs (including a Mariachi Conservatory), and the School-Year Program. In alignment with best practices outlined by the California Department of Education, the School has evolved its Arts Education Program to include a “developmental pathway” to learning approach. The School now concentrates school-year programming on Mariachi music and Mexican folkloric dance, while Summer Camps provide offerings across the arts disciplines:

1. The Summer Program includes two, 2-week Summer Day Camps, and one, 2-week Mariachi Conservatory. The Summer Day Camp provides 9 daily hours of arts engagement opportunities for youth ages 6 to 12 over a two-week period. Students explore offerings across the arts spectrum. For a more intensive arts experience, the Mariachi Conservatory allows students to focus on skill-building with a chosen instrument, as well as a concentrated study of the elements and principles of music through the unique genre of Mariachi music.

2. The School-Year Program aligns with the academic year, divided into Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Classes meet weekly over the course of ten consecutive weeks and engage students in a longer-term progressive skill-building experience, culminating in a demonstration at the close of each quarter. Courses include instruction in violin, trumpet, guitar, percussion, and traditional mariachi instruments such as vihuela and guitarron. Classes in Mexican folkloric dance includes a long-term partnership with Cashion Cultural Legacy (CCL).

To address the barriers that may prevent some of our families from taking advantage of our AEP, the School offers needs-based financial aid, and an affordable instrument loan program. In addition, our School-Year Program classes meet in the evening to address limited transportation challenges during the workday.
