What are the benefits of custom fiberglass hoods and scoops. How do they improve vehicle performance and aesthetics. Where can you find high-quality, American-made fiberglass parts for classic and modern cars.
The Advantages of Custom Fiberglass Hoods and Scoops
Custom fiberglass hoods and scoops offer numerous benefits for car enthusiasts looking to enhance both the performance and appearance of their vehicles. These aftermarket parts are lightweight, durable, and highly customizable, making them popular choices for a wide range of applications.
Weight Reduction and Performance Gains
One of the primary advantages of fiberglass hoods and scoops is their lightweight nature. Compared to stock metal hoods, fiberglass alternatives can significantly reduce the overall weight of a vehicle. This weight reduction can lead to improved acceleration, handling, and fuel efficiency. But how much weight can you actually save? Depending on the specific design and size, a fiberglass hood can be up to 50% lighter than its steel counterpart, potentially shaving off 20-30 pounds or more from your vehicle’s front end.
Enhanced Engine Cooling and Airflow
Many custom fiberglass hoods and scoops are designed with functional air intakes or vents. These features can dramatically improve engine cooling by allowing hot air to escape from the engine bay more efficiently. Additionally, well-designed hood scoops can direct cool, high-pressure air into the engine’s intake system, potentially boosting horsepower and overall performance.
Aesthetic Customization
Beyond performance benefits, custom fiberglass hoods and scoops offer car owners the opportunity to personalize their vehicle’s appearance. From subtle, OEM-style designs to aggressive, race-inspired looks, there’s a fiberglass option to suit virtually any taste. The moldable nature of fiberglass also allows for intricate designs and contours that might be difficult or impossible to achieve with metal.
Types of Fiberglass Hoods and Scoops
The world of custom fiberglass hoods and scoops offers a diverse range of options to suit different vehicle models, performance goals, and aesthetic preferences.
Cowl Induction Hoods
Cowl induction hoods feature a raised section near the base of the windshield. This design allows for better airflow into the engine bay and can accommodate larger engine components. Cowl induction hoods are particularly popular among muscle car enthusiasts and drag racers.
Ram Air Hoods
Ram air hoods incorporate forward-facing scoops designed to funnel air directly into the engine’s intake system. As vehicle speed increases, these scoops can create a pressurized effect, potentially boosting horsepower at higher speeds.
Shaker Hoods
Shaker hoods feature a scoop that’s directly attached to the engine’s air cleaner, protruding through a hole in the hood. This design not only provides a direct path for cool air to enter the engine but also creates a distinctive visual effect as the scoop “shakes” with engine vibrations.
Low Profile Scoops
For those seeking a more subtle aesthetic enhancement, low profile scoops offer a sleek, streamlined look while still providing some of the functional benefits of larger scoops.
The Manufacturing Process of High-Quality Fiberglass Parts
Understanding the manufacturing process behind custom fiberglass hoods and scoops can help consumers appreciate the quality and craftsmanship that goes into these parts.
Hand Layup Technique
High-quality fiberglass parts, like those produced by Stinger Fiberglass Designs, are often created using a hand layup technique. This process involves carefully applying layers of fiberglass cloth or mat to a mold, then saturating each layer with resin. The hand layup method allows for precise control over the thickness and strength of the final product.
Gel Coat Finishing
Most fiberglass hoods and scoops are finished with a gel coat, which provides a smooth, glossy surface that’s ready for painting. The gel coat also serves as a protective layer, enhancing the part’s durability and resistance to UV damage.
Quality Control and Fitment
Reputable manufacturers invest significant time and effort in quality control measures. This includes carefully reproducing molds from original body parts to ensure proper fitment, as well as reinforcing key areas for structural integrity.
Choosing the Right Fiberglass Hood or Scoop for Your Vehicle
Selecting the ideal fiberglass hood or scoop for your car requires careful consideration of several factors.
Vehicle Compatibility
First and foremost, ensure that the part you’re considering is designed to fit your specific make and model. Many manufacturers offer vehicle-specific options that are engineered for proper fitment without extensive modification.
Performance Goals
Consider your performance objectives when choosing a hood or scoop. Are you primarily focused on weight reduction? Do you need additional engine cooling? Or are you looking to increase airflow to your intake system? Different designs cater to different performance needs.
Aesthetic Preferences
While performance is important, the visual impact of a custom hood or scoop shouldn’t be overlooked. Choose a design that complements your vehicle’s overall style and your personal taste.
Budget Considerations
Quality fiberglass parts often come at a premium price point. While it may be tempting to opt for cheaper alternatives, investing in a well-made, domestically produced part can save you money and headaches in the long run.
Installation and Maintenance of Fiberglass Hoods and Scoops
Proper installation and maintenance are crucial for getting the most out of your custom fiberglass hood or scoop.
Professional Installation vs. DIY
While many enthusiasts choose to install fiberglass parts themselves, professional installation can ensure proper fitment and functionality. If you’re not confident in your skills, consider enlisting the help of a experienced body shop or mechanic.
Surface Preparation and Painting
Most fiberglass hoods and scoops require some level of surface preparation before painting. This typically involves sanding the gel coat to create a smooth surface for paint adhesion. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for paint preparation and application.
Ongoing Maintenance
Fiberglass parts are generally low-maintenance, but regular cleaning and waxing can help protect the finish and maintain their appearance. Inspect your hood or scoop periodically for any signs of damage or wear, addressing issues promptly to prevent further deterioration.
The Impact of Fiberglass Hoods and Scoops on Vehicle Value
When considering a custom fiberglass hood or scoop, it’s natural to wonder about the potential impact on your vehicle’s value.
Collector and Performance Vehicles
For certain collector cars and performance vehicles, high-quality fiberglass modifications can actually increase value. This is particularly true for period-correct modifications or those that enhance the vehicle’s performance capabilities.
Everyday Drivers
For daily drivers or more common vehicle models, the impact on value can vary. While some buyers may appreciate the customization, others might prefer a stock appearance. If resale value is a concern, consider choosing a design that can be easily reversed to stock configuration.
Quality and Brand Reputation
The quality of the fiberglass part and the reputation of its manufacturer can influence how it affects your vehicle’s value. Well-made, branded parts from respected companies are more likely to be viewed positively by potential buyers.
Legal Considerations for Custom Hoods and Scoops
Before installing a custom fiberglass hood or scoop, it’s important to be aware of any legal restrictions or requirements in your area.
Street Legal Considerations
In many jurisdictions, there are regulations governing vehicle modifications, including hood alterations. Ensure that your chosen hood or scoop design complies with local laws regarding visibility, safety, and emissions equipment.
Racing and Track Use
For vehicles used in racing or track events, different rules may apply. Many sanctioning bodies have specific guidelines for hood modifications, so be sure to check the regulations for any competitions you plan to enter.
Insurance Implications
Modifying your vehicle with aftermarket parts can sometimes affect your insurance coverage. It’s advisable to inform your insurance provider about any significant modifications to ensure you’re properly covered in case of an accident.
- Always check local regulations before installing custom hoods or scoops
- Be aware of potential impacts on insurance coverage
- Consider reversibility if you’re concerned about future resale value
Custom fiberglass hoods and scoops offer car enthusiasts a unique opportunity to enhance both the performance and aesthetics of their vehicles. By understanding the benefits, types, manufacturing processes, and considerations involved in choosing and installing these parts, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your automotive goals. Whether you’re building a high-performance machine, restoring a classic, or simply looking to stand out from the crowd, a well-chosen fiberglass hood or scoop can be a valuable addition to your vehicle.

20 of the Best Hood Scoops Ever Made
Shelby GT 500 Super Snake
As one of the most powerful modern Mustangs, the GT 500 Super Snake comes with a 5.4-liter V8 with an enormous supercharger on top of the engine. The result is a whopping 725 HP going to the rear wheels. That amount of power needs a lot of air and that’s why it has a big and aggressive hood scoop in the front of the car.
Porsche 911 GT2
If you look at the front of the new 911 GT2, you’ll notice those massive scoops. And you might think the engine is in the front and the scoops are for cooling and providing air. However, this is the 911, so the engine is always in the back.
In fact, the front scoops are for cooling the front brakes and providing aerodynamics to the whole car. And they are one of the biggest ever to be fitted on a production 911 model.
Dodge Dart Hemi
To dominate the NHRA tracks in the late â60s, Dodge produced a limited run of Darts with 426 Hemi engines and unknown power outputs. The cars were not street legal since they produced them only for racing with the body in primer and big racing slicks in the back. Of course, the massive Hemi needed air so the Dodge engineers provided it with the biggest hood scoop the muscle car world had ever seen.
McLaren P1
The hybrid supercar has a mid-engine layout, yet it still has two big hood scoops on the front. Are you wondering why? They are for the aerodynamics. When the air at high speed passes through them, it creates the downforce that keeps the P1 firmly on the ground. So, those scoops not only look cool, they are highly effective.
Ferrari F40
Ferrari presented the F40 in 1987. They conceived the car as a commemorative model, marking the company’s 40th anniversary. However, it was much more than that. It was and still is one of the greatest sports cars they ever built. Most car fans consider it to be one of the best Ferraris they ever produced.
Since they equipped it with a 2.9-liter twin turbo V8, it needed a lot of air for the performance and for cooling. So, Ferrari gave it exactly 10 NACA-duct scoops. There are two in the front and the rest are on the sides and the back.
Dodge Challenger “Shaker”
The Shaker is a hood scoop they mounted on top of the car’s intake system that sticks through the hood. Since it is an integral part of the engine, it also moves and shakes as the engine works; hence the name. Most popular shakers were Dodges and Plymouths, but almost all other muscle car brands have at least one model with this feature.
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6
Even though the heyday of hood scoops was over by the early 2000s, Pontiac still offered one of the most aggressive designs they ever produced. They added twin scoops on the nose of the powerful and fast Firebird Trans Am WS6. With the venerable 5.7-liter V8 engine producing 325 HP, a six-speed manual transmission and numerous suspension upgrades, the 2002 WS6 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. And that kind of speed was what required this hood scoop design.
Dodge RAM SRT 10
Trucks don’t need hood scoops in most cases, but if you own Dodge RAM SRT 10, you will know a scoop is a necessity. The 8.2-liter V10 engine pumps out over 500 HP. It has a 0 to 60 acceleration time of fewer than five seconds. Also, the fuel economy in the single digits needs a lot of extra air to feed the engine.
Dodge Coronet R/T 1970
The Coronet was one of the intermediates in the Mopar stable consumer could order with a 440 or Hemi engine. This meant the Coronet, especially in R/T trim was a serious muscle car contender and a properly fast street racer. Although hood scoops were part of the package, Dodge gave the Coronet R/T two big ones that fed the carburetors through a complex system of tubes.
These are the 20 best hood scoops they ever made. While some were just for show, others had serious work to do. A timeless design feature, hood scoops will always be popular on most sports and muscle cars but are a staple on all race cars.

The device is connected to the power supply using the standard
cable (included in the package). After connecting the power cable, turn on the device
by turning the “POWER / VOL” switch away from you until it clicks
. In confirmation of switching on the device, an audible signal
will sound and the automatic test cycle
will automatically start (checking the display and functions of the radar detector). The sequence of the
automatic test is as follows:
1. After switching on, a single beep will sound. The display will display a welcome message and a message about the start of the automatic
testing.
2. The radar detector will sequentially display all ranges, with an indication of
graphical indicators of the received signal strength, high-priority signal
(LASER) and VG-2.
3.After the end of the automatic testing, the device will switch
to the basic operating mode (ROUTE or CITY).
The automatic testing process can be interrupted by pressing any button of the device on
.
Volume control
In the STINGER S radar detector, a smooth change in the volume of sound signals is used. The volume level is changed by the rotary knob
with the “POWER / VOL” knob. Rotating the wheel “away from you” increases the volume
, “towards yourself” – decreases it.

cheny”. Return to normal playback of sound signals is confirmed by voice
: “Sound signals are on”.The LCD display
will confirm the changes with the appropriate messages: []
and [] respectively.
When an urgent need to turn off the sound appears, the user
can block alarms with one touch. This
option is convenient for owners using a loud-speaking
communication system in their car or if it is necessary to induce silence for
for other reasons.
Changing the brightness of the display.
The display backlighting is changed by short pressing the button

ATTENTION! Do not suppose simultaneous switching off of sound alarm and display indication. This configuration of the instrument can add
to radar skips.
CITY mode
In the face of the transition of an increasing number of organizations and structures
to wireless communication systems, our cities and especially industrial centers
are filled with a multitude of signals in various frequency
radio bands with high spectral density. The overwhelming
most of these signals do not have any effect on the operation of the
radar detector, but there are a small number of sources that
cause false alarms. The main sources of
interference include satellite equipment, local communication facilities
(gas stations), automatic barriers (parking), automatic doors
(markets), etc. As a rule, the intensity of such signals is lower than the signal
of the police radar …This significant difference, the manufacturer
STINGER, used to reduce the effect of interference on the radar
detector.
The STINGER S Laser / Radar Detector applies the principle of reducing the
signal sensitivity of the detector. Radar signals against the background of low-
strong interference have a qualitative advantage, and the radar detector
will detect such a signal, at the same time filtering out the interference.
Long press on the “MUTE * CITY” button (not less than 3
seconds) switches the device to the CITY mode.On the matrix display
the text message [] will appear, the buzzer
will confirm the activation of the mode by notification: “City mode”. In the mode
me CITY, the sensitivity of the device to the reception of radio signals is reduced. To receive an alarm signal, in the CITY mode, the intensity of the signal must exceed the set by the manufacturer according to

threshold value . ..Otherwise, the radar detector will not react
to the detected signal.
When leaving an urban area or industrial area,
do not forget to set the ROUTE mode. To return to the mode of maximum sensitivity
press and hold the “MUTE * CITY” button for 3 seconds
. The display will show the message [],
and the voice notification will notify you with the definition: “Track mode”.
The TRASS mode is characterized by the maximum sensitivity of the radio-
dar-detector, which allows timely detection of the radar-
ra signal when driving on highways.Traffic on open sections of
motorways, highways and roads is characterized by increased speed and significantly fewer sources of false signals. In these
conditions, TRAFFIC mode will provide early detection of the
active police radar.
Disable VG-2 mode
Systems like VG-2 are used in countries where the use of radar detectors is prohibited. These systems detect a working
radar detector by low-power radiation from its local oscillator. In La
zer / STINGER radar detector, a mode is enabled that allows detecting the direction finder of the VG-2 system and warn its owner.
It should be noted that the use of radar detectors is not prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation and the CIS countries
. Therefore, systems like
similar to VG-2 are not used by law enforcement agencies. In connection with this
, our engineers have provided for the possibility of turning off the specified mode
, which allows to reduce the load on the computing device
of the device, as well as to get rid of additional noise and
false alarms.
The VG-2 direction finder detection function is controlled by the
user setup menu. To change the status of the VG-
2 mode, you must:
1. By long pressing the “DIM * MENU” button (at least 3 seconds)
go to the user menu of the system.
2. By short pressing the “DIM * MENU” button, scroll through the menu to
item “VG-2: ON”.
3. By shortly pressing the “MUTE * CITY” button, change the status of the mode
to “VG-2: OFF”.The change will be confirmed by a double beep-beep tone
. To turn on the VG-2 mode, press the button
“MUTE * CITY” again. The activation of the mode will be confirmed by a single
beep.
4. Within 3 seconds, the user menu will close and the settings entered by
will be saved automatically. The device will return to the original
operating mode.
Russia may supply helicopters to Afghanistan that are not afraid of portable missiles – Rossiyskaya Gazeta
Our defense engineers have found a way to combat infrared homing missiles. The unique system was put into service, and their serial production began. But at what cost – very few people know.
Portable anti-aircraft missile systems (MANPADS) first appeared in the United States. However, the Soviet Union reached parity very quickly. And during the Vietnam War, Soviet Strela-type MANPADS shot down more than 200 American helicopters and aircraft. On the other hand, during the Afghan war, the overseas Stingers became a nightmare for the Soviet military aviation. For a long time it was believed that it was impossible to defend against the missiles of this complex.
In August 2002, militants shot down a heavy Mi-26 helicopter over the Khankala airfield in Grozny. 127 people died – more than on the Kursk nuclear-powered ship. They shot the turntable with their own “Needle”, it is not clear how it ended up in the possession of the separatists. They say the Georgians supplied them from their old Soviet stocks.
But even at the end of the twentieth century, it was possible to put active optical-electronic protection against the latest MANPADS on all our fighting helicopters. Why was the Mi-26 defenseless? Yes, for the same reason that our entire defense industry was defenseless in the 1990s.
The main part of the protection – an optoelectronic suppression system for MANPADS – was developed at the Zenit Research Institute in Zelenograd, near Moscow. After the tragedy in Khankala, the Ministry of Defense assured the institute’s designers that the necessary funds would be allocated to complete the most important work. Just create a complex! And it was ready in blueprints for the fall of 2003. And then the research institute was in a fever in earnest.
Some new owners have appeared at the corporatized institute. Typical raider attacks began. Moreover, they were conducted as if they were capturing not a unique defense enterprise, but a pasta factory. There was a defeat of the research institute, there was a beating of a small guard with the notorious baseball bats. A new boss even sat in the director’s chair for a while. For the United States, such a situation is impossible, but in Russia it is a dispute between economic entities, where the special services are categorically forbidden to enter.
But Zenit turned out to be an exception. The Department of Internal Affairs and the FSB of Zelenograd defended the research institute. The newly-minted “general director” was arrested, thoroughly investigated and put behind bars. The invaders were driven out, the research institutes were defended. What to do next? Zenith was defeated. In addition, huge debts have accumulated in wages, payments for energy resources and various obligatory contributions to the state budget. Research Institute “Zenith” was completely bankrupt.
And then a private investor appears. We will not name him. Suffice it to say that this man took the risk of investing heavily in the Russian defense industry, which is an exceptional case in itself. The inevitable lawsuits passed, which recognized the legality of all actions related to the bankruptcy of the old enterprise and the formation of a new one.As a result, all the problems of creditors, including the state, were resolved in full compliance with the law. The obligations of the bankrupt enterprise to create the latest weapon systems were assumed by the special design bureau “Zenith”, which employed the best personnel of the research institute. The SKB was headed by the former general director and general designer of the research institute, professor Alexander Ivanovich Kobzar.
And already in 2006, work was intensified on the creation of active protection systems in the interests of the Ministry of Defense.Over the past three years, more new technical solutions have been created and patented than in the previous ten years. In 2008, it was finally possible to create and prepare for testing a system of active protection of helicopters, which was named “President-S”. The tests were successful, which is confirmed by the relevant acts. The new complex was adopted. In parallel with this, at the expense of the investor, which has been documented, the system for protecting T 90S tanks from ATGMs was modernized. The public customer of this modernization gave the highest assessment. She is recommended for adoption.
At the international arms show Eurosatory-2010, for the first time, a complex of active protection of helicopters from MANPADS of the “Stinger” type was shown. He made a splash.
A decision was made: to equip all helicopters supplied to “hot spots”, including those under agreements with NATO, with President-S complexes. And immediately began new attacks on “Zenith”.
This time the raiders-invaders do not destroy the enterprise. The usual statement is written to the police that many years ago there was some kind of violation of the law.And the police, not even interested in the previous decisions of the courts that everything at the enterprise is legal, starts an “investigation”.
A search is conducted in the apartment of the head of the Zenit SKB, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Alexander Kobzar, an elderly man who has undergone complex heart surgery. What are they looking for? As it turns out, nothing, the task is simple – to fray your nerves.
The case with SKB “Zenith” is not the only one of its kind. As soon as a breakthrough is planned in the domestic defense industry and a product of the highest technological level is created, the heads of the enterprise begin to have problems with the law.Someone is even arrested, someone leaves the high post of general. Our newspaper has told about such cases more than once. Of course, then very competent authorities understand the background of the “legal pressure” that arises, no matter how out of nowhere. Rarely, but it happens that the initiators of such an action are even punished. But, as a rule, work in serious areas related to ensuring the defense sufficiency of the state is seriously hampered. Who benefits from this? The question is open.
The customers of the next attack on Zenit probably expect that the engineers and designers will not be able to stand their nerves and they will go to look for work where it is quieter. They hope in vain. Alexander Ivanovich Kobzar managed to gather such a team of like-minded people and true defense enthusiasts who are really capable of coping with impossible tasks. By the way, the team of SKB “Zenith” is one of the youngest in age in the domestic defense industry. And he will ensure that Russian helicopters and tanks are reliably protected.
Karcher S 750 sweeping machine 1.766-912
An easy-to-use machine, it is also very easy to operate. The handle is adjustable, it has 4 different positions, so you can choose it depending on your height. The side brush has the ability to adjust the pressure, so any surface can be cleaned with it. The handle also folds down for easy storage and transport
For me, there are no drawbacks in it, because it fully justifies the price by the fact that it serves for a very long time and does not have to be repaired at all
I had a summer cottage for a long time, which I almost did not follow, because I did not have enough time to clean it.The house was kept clean, but the territory was neglected. When I left work, there was a lot of time and decided that it was time to start working on the rest of the site. But when I saw him, I realized that you can sweep here with your hands for at least a month, all the same, there will be no effect, because the broom will only carry garbage around the site and that’s it. I started looking for information on the Internet about devices for cleaning the site, and came across sweepers. I got acquainted with the principles of their work and, in addition, read the reviews, so as not to miscalculate with the choice of the company and model.Among all the models, the favorite was the S750 from Karcher, and I decided to buy it myself. I did not dare to order on the Internet, because once I already fell for a fake of a good vacuum cleaner and I didn’t want to deal with fakes anymore. I went to the official store. In it, I also talked with a consultant about these machines, and he just advised me to buy this model. I don’t know how he realized that I had come here for her. In the store, I carefully examined my copy and I was greatly surprised by the quality of workmanship and assembly, as well as the high strength of the container for collecting garbage. This detail is generally very important, since if it breaks down, the car becomes useless, it will be expensive to buy it separately. After the purchase, it had to be assembled, I decided to do this right at the dacha, because there is more free space so that it would be more convenient to place it on the site. Before starting, I read the manual, because before that I had not had to use such machines, I wanted to know all the subtleties of their work and use. I collected it in 5 minutes, which I liked. I immediately adjusted the handle for myself, this function is extremely useful, because people with large or short stature would not be comfortable using a standard handle.I also noticed that it can be folded, which, as a result, began to be used when transporting it to the parents’ dacha or for storage in the garage. You can also put it upright to save more space. I started cleaning from the main area between the house and the garage, because there is more space and dirt too. I want to say right away that I thought that the side brush would not be useful, but it turned out that it can sweep everything out of the corners and even between the tiles from the seams, only now you have to adjust its pressure, depending on the type of surface. I only have concrete and tiles here, nothing else. This brush also cleans well along curbs. Her villi are often located, and they are quite long, so they get into any place. The second cleaning took place after the rain, here I want to note that the wheels did not spin, because they are rubber coated. The container had to be cleaned only after 5 or 6 cleaning, it has a capacity of 32 liters because. I’m happy with the car, if I hadn’t bought it, then the site would have stood dirty
90,000 35 years ago, the Soviet military operation began in Afghanistan
On December 25, 1979, the first units of the Soviet army entered Afghanistan. This is how the almost ten-year history of the USSR’s military presence in this country began. It was not possible to achieve military success: the war was unpopular, and there was no unity among the leadership. The Soviet Union, instead of the security of its southern borders, received an analogue of American Vietnam.
Afghanistan has become a very important country for the Russian Empire since the middle of the 19th century. The country found itself “between a rock and a hard place” – annexed Central Asia by Russia and Great Britain, fearing for the security of India, the “pearl in the crown” of their colonial possessions.
True, Afghanistan eventually defended its independence, having achieved its recognition from St. Petersburg and London.
After the 1917 revolution, Afghanistan became one of the most important countries for the foreign policy of the new state. In 1919, Moscow and Kabul agreed on mutual recognition. The relationship between them was based on the emphasized equality of the parties. The Soviet Union actively assisted the government of Muhammad Zahir Shah, even though Afghanistan remained a kingdom.
The Central Asian country has its own pro-Soviet organization – the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA). In the 1960s, it was a small organization that mainly united the left intelligentsia and, due to its marginality, had nothing to do with the coup d’état that took place in the summer of 1973. Then Mohammed Daoud, a relative of Zahir Shah, accused the latter of usurpation and proclaimed a republic. In it, the position of local communists strengthened – despite the fact that they were divided into the radical faction “Khalk” (“People”) and the moderate “Parcham” (“Banner”).In addition, after a few years, the Afghan economy began to collapse. Emigration to neighboring Iran and Pakistan became widespread.
In April 1978, the assassination of a journalist and editor of the PDPA newspaper led to an armed coup d’etat called the April Revolution.
Supporters of the Parchamists came to power, led by Nurmuhammed Taraki, who proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
However, the revolution, instead of establishing a harsh pro-Soviet regime, led to chaos.Taraki began a program of not fully thought out reforms: first of all, they concerned the nationalization of land and the cancellation of debts. In addition to the large latifundists, the middle peasants also fell under the confiscation of land, which could not cause positive emotions in the village.
Forced modernization, in particular the imposition of literacy, the introduction of laws regulating marriage, also displeased the conservative majority.
Measures to limit the role of Islam in society naturally led to the growth of extremist sentiments. The base for the activities of Islamist groups was North-West Frontier Province Pakistan, where the Pashtuns also lived, and the border between it and Afghanistan was formal. By the spring of 1979, the situation in the country had deteriorated.
The head of the National Salvation Front of Afghanistan, Sebgatullah Mojadeddi, announced a “jihad” fatwa against the Democratic Republic. The rebels controlled several provinces of the country.
In September, the fate of Taraki was decided: his prime minister, Hafizullah Amin, first accused the president of all mortal sins, and then gave the order to kill him.On October 9, Taraki was strangled with pillows. Amin’s position was precarious: on the one hand, there was already a civil war in the country, on the other, he could not fully rely even on the People’s Democratic Party. Amin resorted to maneuvering, but this did not end with anything – there was a threat of de-Sovietization of Afghanistan.
This was unacceptable for the Soviet Union for two reasons.
Geopolitically, the emergence of Islamist Afghanistan inevitably meant constant tension on the border with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Moreover, the population of the north of Afghanistan was made up of Uzbeks and Tajiks.
In addition, Moscow then, if not declared, then shared the “Brezhnev doctrine” formulated back in August 1968: states that entered the Soviet sphere of influence have only limited sovereignty.
According to some testimonies, they started talking about the possible introduction of troops back in the spring of 1979, when an anti-communist uprising took place in Herat, but then the leadership of the USSR decided to refrain from extreme measures. In the summer of the same year, against the background of mutual intrigues of Taraki and Amin, the discussion became sharper, but this way of solving the problem did not cause unity even at the level of a part of the party elite, not to mention the academic community. The decisive meeting was the Politburo meeting on December 12. On it, the head of the KGB, Yuri Andropov, said that Amin had contacts with the CIA back in the 1960s, and Defense Minister Dmitry Ustinov feared growing tensions along the southern borders.
One cannot but take into account the personal reaction of Soviet leaders to Amin’s “perfidy”.Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko wrote in his memoirs: “This bloody act (the murder of Taraki. – Gazeta.Ru) made an amazing impression on the Soviet leadership. Leonid Brezhnev took his death especially hard ”.
As a result, the resolution of the Politburo of the Central Committee “To the position in“ A ” was adopted. It was naturally top secret. It said: “To approve the considerations and measures set forth by comrades Andropov, Ustinov and Gromyko.”This meant that a decision was made at the highest political level to send troops into the country.
In addition, it was decided to remove Amin and replace him with Babrak Karmal, loyal to Moscow.
December 25 A limited contingent (OK) of the Soviet Army (it was the 40th Army) crossed the borders of the Soviet Union with the DRA.Two days later, the presidential palace in Kabul was attacked by detachments of the USSR special services: about 20 Soviet soldiers were killed during the battle, but the palace was taken, Amin was killed.
Inside the Union, the events in the neighboring state were not reported: the central newspapers Izvestia and Pravda paid much more influence to the upcoming elections to the Supreme Councils of the Union republics, as well as the ratification of the friendship treaty with South Yemen (People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen) and a visit to the country by a delegation from the Japanese Communist Party.
It’s funny that on December 27, Pravda published a short article about a “significant date” – the 15th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, in connection with which it was reported that “voluntary labor watches are being held at Afghan enterprises.”
Only on December 28, Izvestia published the message “Towards Events in Afghanistan.” The overthrow of the “bloody clique” of Hafizullah Amin and “his henchmen, agents of American imperialism” was announced. There was also published “Appeal to the people of Afghanistan” and the appeal of the government of this country, which said that it “turned to the USSR with an urgent request for urgent political, moral and economic assistance, including military assistance.”
“The government of the USSR granted the request of the Afghan side,” the Izvestia report said succinctly. Pravda limited itself to republishing Karmal’s address to the peoples of Afghanistan, in which Amin was accused of all mortal sins and, in particular, of mass repressions.
A special commission on Afghanistan was quickly established under the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee. The leadership of the military operation was entrusted to the First Deputy Minister of Defense of the USSR Sergei Sokolov and First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Nikolai Akhromeev.
According to the chief military adviser in Afghanistan in 1980-1981, Alexander Mayorov, “Sokolov and Akhromeev were sent to Kabul at the beginning of the Afghan campaign in the expectation that it would last weeks and months, the state would acquire a pro-Soviet regime and the situation in Afghanistan would stabilize. But reality showed that the Afghans … gradually began to organize their forces to resist the Babrak regime. The battles dragged on for months … “.
There was also no unity among the leaders of the operation.Mayorov emphasizes the constant misunderstanding that arose on the ground between the army, the KGB – Colonel Viktor Osadchiy is mentioned in his memoirs, who was under the new leader of Afghanistan all the time – and the Foreign Ministry represented by the USSR Ambassador to the DRA Fikret Tabeyev.
Historian Viktor Korgun described the situation in the DRA in the first years after the introduction of troops: “The country was flooded with thousands of Soviet advisers… the leadership of the republic clearly took the form of a puppet regime … “
The international reaction to the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan turned out to be unexpectedly nervous for Moscow, despite the fact that Western countries did not react to the April Revolution and the subsequent coup of Amin. In January 1980, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly condemned the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In February 1980, at a regular session of the International Olympic Committee, “the issue of postponing or canceling the Summer Games in Moscow was put on the agenda. “At the opening of the session in Lake Placid, US Secretary of State Cyrus Vance spoke, which, according to sports historian Mikhail Prozumenshchikov, was perceived as a certain pressure on the organization, but in the end it was decided to hold the Olympics in Moscow.
For the American establishment, the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was an additional blow: as the French historian Nicolas Werth writes, “the invasion … took place less than a year after the disastrous defeat of the United States, which they suffered after the overthrow of the Shah of such an important ally as Iran.”
Indeed, in the winter and spring of 1979, the pro-Western head of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, was ousted during the Islamic Revolution . He was replaced by the fanatical Ayatollah Khomeini, who began to build a theocracy in the country and immediately began to pursue an anti-American policy.
A chain of US defeats in the Middle East led to the presidential victory of the right-wing candidate Ronald Reagan, who preferred the policy of “detente” to a policy of confrontation with the Union.
The USSR failed to achieve military success in Afghanistan. The regime in Kabul controlled only large cities, and the mujahideen troops received help and support from the United States, Iran, Pakistan and the Arab kingdoms and emirates of the Persian Gulf. The hopelessness of the war became obvious to the new leadership of the country: on May 15, 1988, within the framework of the Geneva agreements, the withdrawal of the OK from Afghanistan began.
Its number at its peak reached 120 thousand people (12 divisions). By February 15, 1989, the last soldiers crossed the bridge over the Amu Darya into the territory of Soviet Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. This is how the history of the Soviet military stay in Afghanistan ended. In April 1992, the regime of Karmal Najibullah who replaced him fell – it was overthrown by the detachments of Ahmadshah Massoud and Rashid Dostum. Afghanistan became an Islamic state (the organization is banned in Russia), but the Mujahideen could not share power – the civil war became permanent.
For the USSR, the cost of the Afghan war was great: more than 15 thousand soldiers and officers were killed, thousands were wounded.
Veterans have experienced psychological stress called “Afghan Syndrome”.
Thus, at the end of its existence, the Soviet Union had its own Vietnam.
