How Christian Estrada, Notre Dame Class of 2014 and founder of Custom Elevation, is elevating artisans in Nicaragua out of poverty.

“To be completely honest, I really had no idea what I was doing when I was getting started,” said Christian Estrada, a 2014 Notre Dame graduate and founder of Custom Elevation, in a recent interview. That’s exactly why building a business is so complicated and wonderful; you can’t know everything you will need to know until you dive in. With the right combination of passion, a great idea, and the drive to see it through, anything is possible.

Passion

Christian Estrada was born and raised in Nicaragua, where he was exposed to a level of poverty that starkly contrasted the environment he encountered as a Notre Dame student. Artisans in Nicaragua are known for their intricately handwoven hammocks, a skill passed down through generations.

“Everyone in Nicaragua has hammocks. My parents had several in the house and three set up in the trees outside,” Christian told us. Due to the competitive, crowded nature of this market, the highly skilled artisans often struggle to make a living.

Christian, along with co-founders Roberto Pellas and David Kenney, decided to find a way to elevate these artisans out of poverty. The three Notre Dame undergraduate students worked with artisans to create a diverse product offering, including wine caddies, hammocks and handbags, and developed a plan to sell the products in the U.S. where they could demand a fair price. To differentiate the products from other fair trade items, they decided to pursue a license with Notre Dame.

A Great Idea

In order to be approved for a license with Notre Dame, all vendors must provide detailed manufacturing information, marketing plan, and distribution strategy, affiliate with the Fair Labor Association, and adopt the Notre Dame Labor Code of Conduct. Custom Elevation also needed to establish a relationship with Follett Higher Education Group, the managing company for Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, where they hoped to sell their products.

“Christian had great spirit and drive to help the artisans and bring quality Nicaraguan-made products to market,” David Werda, Director of Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, told us. “Also, he and his partners had a sharp business acumen and had the resources necessary to bring the goods to market.”

Christian, Roberto and David began working closely with Notre Dame faculty in the summer of 2012 to develop a business plan that would satisfy all of the requirements for a Notre Dame license. “The professors at Notre Dame are open to helping in any way they can. I was able to incorporate the project into my degree in at least 4 classes. I was also allowed to use Custom Elevation as my capstone project,” said Christian.

One of the faculty members who worked closely with the Christian during this process was Michael Vogel. Michael is an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Notre Dame Gigot Center for Entrepreneurship, and helps students, alumni and faculty navigate their business ideas. He talks through new concepts and provides guidance on funding, viability, patents, trademarks, etc.

“Christian got out there, got samples, talked to the artisans, talked to Follett, talked to Notre Dame Licensing,” Michael told us. “He has a high energy level, and is always thinking of new and better ways of doing things. And he is also willing to accept when something isn’t a good idea.”

It took over six months to complete the process, but on November 7, 2012, Christian received his Notre Dame License from the Collegiate Licensing Company.

The Drive to See it Through

While pursuing the Notre Dame license, Christian had the opportunity to meet Joe Bozich, founder of Alta Gracia Apparel. He was inspired by Joe’s commitment to paying workers a living wage, and wanted to make a similar impact on the artisans of Custom Elevation. Christian told us that Custom Elevation is currently able to pay their artisans 240% above the Nicaraguan minimum wage, and this is having a profound impact. These workers are able to afford better education, food and housing. One artisan used his earnings to remodel his home, and another was able to purchase a computer so that his daughter could pursue her academic goals.

Christian, Roberto and David have since graduated from Notre Dame, but the journey for Custom Elevation is just beginning. When we asked Christian “what’s next” for the company, his answer was directly in line with their mission. Custom Elevation is poised for expansion, but the owners have chosen to first invest in facility and machinery improvements. Their first priority is always the health, safety and happiness of the company’s most valuable asset: the artisans.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Purdue Boilermakers Football Game

Most of the civilized world does not like Notre Dame. This is a well established fact. While your natural reaction of disgust and revulsion at hearing the words “Notre Dame” is perfectly normally, you’ve probably never really thought about why. It’s the equivalent of asking why is the grass green? But just like the non-Nebraska B1G fans among us can answer that question (grass produces a pigment called chlorophyll and chlorophyll reflects green light waves), we can also answer why all of civilized society should root for Purdue to beat Notre Dame this Saturday. In the following article I will attempt to do just that.

The “University” of Notre Dame du Lac was founded when a French born bishop gave land originally bought by a French born priest on behalf of the Catholic Church to a yet another French born priest on the condition that he build a college there. Despite this heavy involvement of French priests in their early history, ND goes by the nickname of the “Fighting Irish” despite the fact that the Irish have always been terrible fighters. The early recorded history of the Irish people is full of Viking raids and Viking pillaging followed by lots of conquests of the English. The only reason we see multiple conquests by England of the island is due to the fact that the English often got involved with infighting amongst themselves, left to go fight more important battles, and then had to come back and “conquer” the island again by declaring themselves in charge. Meanwhile France slowly captured Alsace & Lorraine over the course of 100s of years, constantly invaded Italy and Germany, and it took the entirety of Europe to put an end to France’s militaristic conquests under Napoleon. Not to mention France once went to war with England in a war lasting over 100 years (which France also won by the way). If you wanted to have your nickname be “Fighting ________” at least pick someone a) good at fighting and b) who you have a connection with.

Did you know that Notre Dame has never played Idaho or Boise State in football? Or that they’ve never played in the world famous Idaho Potato Bowl? This is because they are scared of potatoes and are trying to wipe them off of this planet. Right now you might be asking yourself: “why would anyone be scared of potatoes?” The answer goes back to Notre Dame’s decision to co-opt the history of Ireland as their own (which as someone with ~1/8ish Irish ancestry I find offensive by the way). If you don’t know your history, the Irish Potato Famine lasted from 1845 to 1852 and resulted in mass starvation and disease following a widespread potato blight. It also resulted in mass numbers of actual Irish people (including my ~1/8ish ancestors) emigrating from Ireland as they sought the ability to not starve to death. Now why a French school would fear a potato, I don’t really know as France suffered much less from the potato blight than Ireland, Benelux, or Germany. Cultural misappropriation is wrong and turning the suffering of millions into a fake war on potatoes is wrong and Notre Dame football should be ashamed of themselves for doing so.

They did so in order to play more games against schools like North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Louisville, and Virginia. Nothing against those schools but ending a long time rivalry in order to play those schools more often is a cowardly act. Since 1946, Purdue and Notre Dame had played annually for 69 nice years in a row. Then Notre Dame ended the series. Restarting the series this year, they have only agreed to play 2 games in a row before taking another break. 2 years is not nice.

Notre Dame has a continuous series with Navy and their fans would prefer to play this game over B1G schools.

In yet another culture misappropriation of the Irish people, Notre Dame has bonded with Navy and their fans consider their annual game to be a sacred tradition. Despite the fact that South Bend is not near a large body of water and is a full 634 miles away from Annapolis, Notre Dame’s fans believe this game is more important than playing in-state B1G teams Purdue and Indiana, or close neighbors Michigan State, Michigan, and Northwestern. What exactly is Notre Dame’s connection to Navy? Well once again Notre Dame goes back to stealing Irish history. Just like the Irish consistently getting beat by the English, the early years of the American Navy were full of humiliating defeats to the English Navy. Luckily for the US Navy they had the US Army around to beat the English in the 18th and 19th centuries whereas the Irish people couldn’t even convince the historic rivals of the English (the Scots) to fight on their side.

College football is full of great traditions. From Michigan losing to Ohio State every year, Iowa fans not caring about hospitalized children, and Wisconsin fans attempting to collapse their stadium every Saturday by jumping their very large weights at the same time the B1G has a number of great traditions. One of Purdue’s is that their marching band has a big drum. Some might even call it the World’s state of Indiana’s largest drum. The drum (along with Purdue’s train mascot) routinely goes to every Purdue football game and hasn’t missed a performance since 1979. Despite that tradition, word leaked this week that Notre Dame wouldn’t allow the drum into the stadium on Saturday. Illinois lets Purdue bring a cannon into their stadium when they play and Notre Dame won’t even let in a drum. Questions to Notre Dame’s athletic director have gone unanswered on why he hates fun and tradition.

Notre Dame is pro death penalty for misdemeanor crimes

Full disclosure: I believe the death penalty is wrong and that it is state sanctioned murder. But even if you are pro death penalty (which it’s a free country we can disagree), most reasonable people would agree that is should not be applied for the relatively minor crime of playing for Notre Dame’s football team. In sharp contrast to this viewpoint we have Notre Dame’s most renown spokesperson Brian Kelly issuing a statement to the media almost two weeks ago stating that he was pro executing his own team. Since that date there has been no retraction from the university on this statement so it’s pretty safe to say that all of Notre Dame is in agreement on this. While I agree that it should be illegal to play for Notre Dame’s football team, the nature of this crime means the punishment should really be more of a small fine not execution.

In Conclusion

Dear “readers”, I feel I have provided more than sufficient evidence for why you should root for the Purdue Boilermakers to beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this Saturday. Which you really didn’t need because you already didn’t like Notre Dame. While Purdue is unlikely to win, your support can make the difference. So consider this a call to action. If all of the “readers” of OTE bet heavily on Notre Dame to win, karmic justice will occur and Purdue will be able to pull the upset while you all lose money gambling. If you don’t bet on Notre Dame, then you too probably hate puppies.

Roller Derby Naptown ( NRD ) is a women’s flat track roller derby league based in Indianapolis, Indiana.Founded in 2006, the league began its 10th season in March 2016. ^[2] Naptown Roller Derby is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). ^[3] The home bouts of the Naptown Roller Derby take place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

League History

Naptown Roller Girls was formed in 2006 and conducted one-off training in public places, and in 2007 held a competitive fight for the first time. ^[4] Naptown was declared a member of WFTDA in December 2007. ^[5] By early 2008, NRG was repeatedly selling out events at Indiana State Fairgrounds on February 9 of that year, about 4,500 people had gathered. ^[6] Naptown’s highest attendance record was 4,978 at the Pepsi Colosseum, with an average attendance of 3,500 as of 2011. ^[7]

In 2009, Naptown was the host league for the WFTDA North Central Regional Monumental Mayhem, held at the Indiana Convention Center. ^{[7] [8]}

In January 2017, the league announced a name change to Naptown Roller Derby as part of an effort to create an “inclusive and supportive environment for skaters and staff.” ^{[9] [10]}

The league consists of three teams with different levels of competitive play: Sirens Tornado. (Command) , Belles Warning (B-Command) and Third Alarm ( C-Command) . ^[11]

Team Naptown WFTDA A, Tornado Sirens, has consistently qualified for the WFTDA playoffs at various levels since 2010, including performances for the WFTDA Championship in 2011 ^[12] and 2012. ^[13] Naptown qualified for the WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs and Championship in 2017 as the twelfth seed for Pittsburgh, and finished third with a 215-144 win over the Dublin Roller Derby. ^[14] In 2018, the league declined an invitation to the WFTDA playoffs, citing travel costs. ^[15]
