About Queens University | Queens University of Charlotte
Define Your YES. Build Your AND.
Amazing things happen at the intersection of challenge and support, of big and small,
of personal and worldly. We believe that you shouldn’t have to decide between one
thing or another. It’s no accident that we’ve created a place where you can have both.
A place where you can have it all.
Founded in 1857, Queens University of Charlotte is a small, private, co-ed, masters-level
university focused on tailoring dynamic experiences for students in and outside of
the classroom. In all of our programs, Queens emphasizes active and collaborative learning, meaningful
student-teacher relationships, a creative synthesis of the liberal arts with the world
of work and the value and necessity of lifelong learning.
Vibrant City. Close-Knit Community.
Our campus is nestled in the historic neighborhood of Myers Park, just minutes from
uptown Charlotte. Charlotte is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, and it’s also an extended
classroom for our students, full of research, service and internship opportunities.
Here, you don’t have to choose between an intimate campus or a big city. At Queens,
you get a quintessential college experience with the perks of the Queen City, which was ranked No. 6 among U.S. News & World Report‘s “Best Places to Live” in the country.
Innovative Education. Rooted in Tradition.
Firmly grounded in liberal arts, Queens delivers an innovative education that fosters dialogue and critical thinking. With 42 majors, 63 minors and numerous graduate and certificate programs, students of all ages have unlimited possibilities to grow academically and socially. Backed by our inimitable Yes/And Initiative, students engage in a unique combination of transformative experiences in and out
of the classroom. That includes studying abroad – an unforgettable opportunity that nearly all Queens traditional graduates have.
It’s through close relationships with peers and faculty that every student here feels like valued, supported and challenged. No matter your academic interest, our six Schools and Colleges are sure to propel your career forward.
On the Field. In the Classroom.
Queens Athletics thrives on its mission to intentionally promote an experience that fosters excellence
in education and competition. Our student-athletes are known for excelling in sports
and being leaders in the classroom. The university’s dedication to a balance of academics
and athletics is on display with their average GPA of 3.43. Competing in NCAA Division
II athletics as part of the Southern Athletic Conference, the Royals have 24 teams,
which collectively have won 18 national championships. In the 2019-20 seasons, the
Royals won eight conference championships and placed in the top five in the final
Learfield Directors Cup standings. We have 653 student-athletes on our campus, including
The Importance of Inclusion.
At Queens, we recognize that human identities and qualities — and the diversity of
them within our campus and community — provide us all with an opportunity to learn
We are committed to fostering a culture that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and access for students, faculty, staff and the community around us. And we believe that this
commitment is vital in our quest to provide transformative educational experiences
that nurture intellectual curiosity, promote global understanding, transform students’
lives and foster personal and professional success.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Move Forward By Giving Back.
Our campus is guided by the motto “Not to be served, but to serve.” This guides our mission and values, and all that we do to create a culture in which we strive to become philanthropic
and effective community members. Yearly mission trips to Guatemala, New Orleans and
volunteering for non-profits during Martin Luther King Day of Service are just a few
examples of how we serve our community, both local and global.
Leading By Example.
The 21st president of Queens, Daniel G. Lugo, is a distinguished higher education professional and inspirational leader known
for innovative resource development. Lugo began his service as president of Queens University of Charlotte on July 1, 2019. He was
named president after serving in key leadership positions at three of the nation’s
leading liberal arts institutions. These roles included vice president of college
advancement at Colby College, vice president and dean of admission and financial aid
at Franklin and Marshall College, and associate dean of admissions at Carleton College.
“In today’s world, personal and professional achievement rarely has a straight trajectory,”
Lugo writes. “What is far more valuable is a mindset — a mindset that emphasizes flexibility,
integrity, critical thinking skills, a strong work ethic, leadership, a global perspective,
and an ability to respond quickly to both challenges and opportunities.
“At Queens, we nurture this mindset.”

Presbyterian Church (USA)
Queens University of Charlotte is a private, comprehensive, coeducational university with a commitment to both the liberal arts and professional studies, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Queens University was formally established in 1857 as the Charlotte Female Institution, located at the intersection of College Street and 9th Street near center of the city. In 1896 the school was chartered by Concord and Mecklenburg Presbyteries and merged with the Presbyterian Female College; in 1912 the name Queens College was adopted and two years later the college relocated to its current campus in Myers Park. By 1930 the college became related to the Presbyterian Synod of South Carolina as the result of a merger with the Chicora College in Columbia, SC. It was not until 1987 that the college became fully coeducational, though male students were admitted into classes following World War II. In 2002 the school achieved university status.
Queens University of Charlotte is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1932. More than 40 majors, over 60 minors and nearly a dozen graduate programs are offered through Queens University’s several colleges and schools. Queens University also boasts a record of nearly 100% of all undergraduate students participating in internships.

The discovery of these places is associated with the name of the favorite of the virgin queen (honestly, it was the official title!) Of Elizabeth I, Walter Reilly.Fate threw him up and down. But at the time of his power, in 1584, he sent a group of colonist scouts to America to explore new territories. It was they who discovered a whole chain of delightful islets along the coast with outlandish animals and plants. And after a while, an entire expedition of 121 people, led by an active captain John White, came here.
Here, on the new shore, he had a granddaughter named Virginia and became the first English child born in the New World. The exact date of the memorable event is even known – August 18, 1587.
Grandfather soon sailed to England for new colonists and weapons, and when he returned a year later, he did not find a single person. As if everyone had evaporated. Only on the bark of one of the trees was the word in English found: “Croatian”. This riddle tormented the Americans for a long time, and only at the beginning of the 20th century did they come to the hypothetical conclusion that the settlers were sheltered by the Croatin Indians, who then migrated from these places. Indeed, among them today you can see tall, fair-skinned people with blue eyes.
In 1910, a whole group of such Indians began to claim to be the descendants of the settlers, and 585 people were officially recognized as Croatian Indians. There was even a place called the Lost Colony, a tiny museum was created in honor of the first girl Virginia Dear, an open-air theater shows performances about the first settlers and their friendly saviors – the Indians. In general, there is something to lure tourists!
Both the islets and the continental part were vigorously settled by the British. The same Walter Reilly, who, by the way, had never set foot on the American continent, especially helped the colonists with money and equipment. But the grateful descendants named their capital after Sir Reilly-Raleigh. And now about 200 thousand people live there, and in the entire state there are about 8 million inhabitants.
The state itself got its name in honor of the English king Charles II, who in 1663 donated this territory (including the current state of South Carolina) to eight lords, whom he wanted to celebrate for faithful service to the crown.
Ah, lords, lords, who could have foreseen that they would turn out to be such idealistic crucian carp. Neither less nor less are they going to arrange on these lands an ideal community of honest workers.
In 1669, having assembled a special Assembly, they proposed the creation of a new federal state with their own Constitution, which the famous English philosopher John Locke wrote on their order. It is clear that nothing good has come of this venture, the time has not come yet. Yes, and the people themselves had a hard time: either their possessions were attacked by the Tuscarora Indians, or the colonists themselves from time to time overthrew their rulers… In short, soon the lords flatly renounced their rights to this land. But you cannot erase a word from the song: the first Constitution on this land appeared here, in North Carolina, which its inhabitants are justly proud of.
The love of freedom of the Caroline was manifested throughout the history of the country. They gave strict instructions to their delegates to vote for the country’s independence at the Second Continental Convention. In 1861, they were at first opposed to secession from the North, but when hostilities began, they went over to the Southerners’ camp.True, the main territory of the state was little affected by the war, although of course there is a Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, dedicated mainly to the War of Independence.
The state, as it were, consists of two unequal parts: the islands, through which the openwork bridges are thrown, and the continental part. The latter is a plateau about 200 feet above sea level. Fertile land, irrigated by rivers, grows everything – from cotton to peaches. In the west, there are the Appalachian Mountains, more than four dozen peaks that reliably cover the plain, creating an ideal microclimate in it.Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain on the East Coast, is also here (6684 feet above sea level). The largest city, Charlotte, has over 500 thousand inhabitants.
The state attracts tourists with its national parks and nature reserves. In Moore’s Greek National Military Park in 1776, the colonists won their first victory over the British in the state.
In Smoky Mountains you can admire picturesque places and a variety of flora and fauna. You can get acquainted with the life of the Cherokee Indians in Cherokee Indian Reservation
Well, if we talk about fellow countrymen whose names are known to the whole world, then the Carolins are most proud of the brothers Wright, Wilbor and Orville, who in 1903 made the first flight on the planet in an aircraft heavier than air on his Flyer.By the way, this plane (or a copy of it, who knows?) Hangs above the ceiling right at the entrance to the world’s largest Museum of Cosmonautics in Washington. The brothers lived in the tiny village of Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers National Memorial was set up nearby in honor of the first flight.
There is one town in the state – Mecca for smokers – Durham. It is the center of the tobacco industry, many factories, and local shops sell tobacco, cigars and cigarettes at surprisingly low prices.
North Carolina has many nicknames. At first they called him the Heel (these are the outlines of the state). Then came the Tar State, the Old Northern State, and finally the Turpentine State. Honestly, I still didn’t know what it was. It turns out that turpentine is a resin suitable for making rosin. And, as you know, the strings are rubbed with it. And not only …
The motto of the state is “To be better than to seem”.

90,050 90,000 Several million people left without electricity in the United States
Several million people were left without electricity in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware due to the raging Hurricane Irene.
In New York, the electricity supply was cut to 32 thousand consumers. Energy company Consolidated Edison has announced potential power outages in Manhattan, including the US financial center, Wall Street, which could affect the timely opening of trading on Monday, Reuters reports. New York authorities are preparing for floods. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered the mandatory evacuation of more than 370 thousand people – residents of low-lying areas of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.A total of 8,700 people registered in the shelters, the majority refused to participate in the evacuation, AP notes. As the correspondent of AR reports, the city makes a strange impression – life in some parts of the city has come to a standstill, while in other areas taxis are driving around and crowds of onlookers with cameras are walking.
In neighboring New Jersey, more than 330 thousand consumers are left without electricity.
Hurricane Irene left a trail of destroyed power lines, piles of debris and fallen trees along the North Carolina coastline.Flooding has been reported in Outer Banks and other coastal communities in the state. Northern California Governor Bev Perdue said the hurricane could have “significant impact” on agriculture, Reuters reported.
Heavy rains fell in Washington, DC, but a hurricane wind passed the city.
In the eastern United States, in panic, Americans emptied supermarket shelves, buying up water, power generators, batteries and flashlights.
Irene is the first hurricane to hit the US mainland since 2008, when Ike struck Texas.Hurricane Irene reminded Americans of the devastating Hurricane Katrina, which killed nearly 1,800 people in 2005 and caused more than $ 80 billion in damage.
Since the early 1970s, the Saffir-Simpson scale has been used to estimate the potential damage from hurricanes, based on wind speed and the height of storm waves caused by a cyclone.
The following hurricane classification is adopted:
90 270 0 – Tropical storm – wind speed less than 117 kilometers per hour, possible damage to trees and bushes
1 – Minimal hurricane – damage to trees, minor damage to piers, small boats may be anchored.
2 – Moderate – some trees felled, significant damage to piers and marinas.
3 – Significant – Large trees were felled, damage to small buildings. Flooding along the coastline.
4 – Huge – trees were felled, windows, doors and roofs of buildings were badly damaged. Flooded areas up to 3 m above sea level; floods spread 10 km inland.
5 – Catastrophic – trees have been felled, buildings are seriously damaged or destroyed. The damage was caused to the lower floors of buildings at an altitude of about four meters above sea level at a distance of up to 45 km from the coastline.
