These consistent specifications ensure compatibility with a wide range of clubheads and grip options, making the Kiyoshi PURPLE a versatile choice for custom club builds.
Launch and Spin Characteristics
The Kiyoshi PURPLE shaft is designed to produce specific launch and spin characteristics to suit different player needs. The launch and spin profiles vary slightly across the weight classes:
- 45 and 55 gram models: HIGH launch, MID spin
- 65 gram model: MID launch, LOW spin
- 75 and 85 gram models: MID-HIGH launch, LOW-MID spin
This variety allows golfers to select a shaft that complements their swing characteristics and desired ball flight.
How do launch and spin affect ball flight?
Launch angle and spin rate play crucial roles in determining the trajectory and behavior of a golf ball in flight. A higher launch angle combined with moderate spin, as seen in the lighter weight Kiyoshi PURPLE shafts, can help golfers achieve a higher initial ball flight and maximize carry distance. Conversely, the mid-launch and lower spin characteristics of the heavier models may benefit players who prefer a more penetrating ball flight and increased roll upon landing.
Torque Properties of the Kiyoshi PURPLE
Torque, which refers to the shaft’s resistance to twisting during the swing, is another important factor in shaft performance. The Kiyoshi PURPLE lineup offers varying torque values across its weight classes:
- 45 gram model: 5.0 degrees
- 55 gram model: 4.0 degrees
- 65 gram model: 3.5 degrees
- 75 gram model: 3.1 degrees
- 85 gram model: 3.5 degrees
Generally, lighter shafts feature higher torque values, which can provide a livelier feel and potentially help square the clubface at impact. Heavier shafts with lower torque offer increased stability, which may benefit players with faster swing speeds or those seeking more control.
How does torque affect shaft performance?
Torque plays a significant role in how a shaft feels and performs during the golf swing. A shaft with higher torque may feel more responsive and can help players who struggle with squaring the clubface at impact. Conversely, lower torque shafts offer increased stability, which can be beneficial for players with faster swing speeds or those who tend to overrotate the clubhead. The varying torque values across the Kiyoshi PURPLE lineup allow golfers to select a shaft that best matches their swing characteristics and preferences.

UST Mamiya LIN-Q Purple Shaft Review
Written by Bill Bush on
UST Mamiya LIN-Q Purple Shaft
UST Mamiya’s new LIN-Q shaft family introduces their new Q-Fiber technology for strong energy transfer and stability. The UST Mamiya LIN-Q Purple is the medium launch, medium spin option of the two LIN-Q shafts. In my opinion, it’s arguably UST Mamiya’s best shaft in their current lineup.
The Looks
There are two different UST Mamiya LIN-Q shafts, but the purple is by far the flashiest. While the shiny purple base grabs all of the attention, the yellow LIN-Q and UST Mamiya branding really pops. There are also subtle black graphics mixed in when you look up close. I’m not a big LA Lakers fan, but it’s hard for me to look at this and not think of Magic Johnson and the LA Lakers losing to the Chicago Bulls in the 1991 NBA Finals. Say what you will, the LIN-Q Purple is a cool looking golf shaft.
How Does it Feel?
UST Mamiya designed the LIN-Q Purple to have a more stable tip and mid section. “Stability” shouldn’t be confused for “stout” or “boardy.” The goal of the Q-Fiber that UST Mamiya utilizes in this shaft is to transfer more energy back into the ball. Maybe it’s just me, but I can feel when a “bad shaft” is wobbly (for lack of a better term). It just doesn’t hold up throughout the swing and you can feel the energy loss. This makes me feel inconsistent and out of control. Fortunately, with the LIN-Q Purple, you can really feel the shaft holding up in the swing and then fully releasing at impact. As a result, I was more confident in my shot control and got pretty good performance numbers.
On-Course Performance
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Launch Angle | Spin | Carry (Yds) | Total (Yds) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
117 | 173.2 | 12º | 2515 | 286 | 309 |
I know it’s early in the year, and we haven’t been playing much real golf in the northern half of the United States, but MAN, I am not mad at how I’ve been swinging the driver! One thing I’ll say about my experiences with UST Mamiya shafts is that they often perform exactly as they say on the tin. The LIN-Q Purple was no exception and proved to be a decent match for my driver swing. Averaging 12º of launch and ~2500 rpms on my spin is about as mid/mid as it gets in my game. My flight was piercing and dispersion was tight. Additionally, adjusting trajectory as necessary is very doable, and in my case, I maintained the medium spin whether launching lower or higher.
Final Thoughts – UST Mamiya LIN-Q Purple Shaft
I don’t know how factual this is, but I feel like UST Mamiya has the most diverse wood shaft lineup they may have ever had. They’ve put together a well-rounded group of profiles and feels for a wide range of players. Out of the whole UST bunch, the LIN-Q Purple may be my favorite. The consistency in the feel and performance make the LIN-Q Purple easy to control and to just trust off the tee. Of course, like any shaft, it’s highly recommended that you get fit and do proper testing to see how your specific swing responds to the equipment.
