What was Salute Your Shorts. How did it impact 90s television. Why did the show resonate with young audiences. When did it originally air. Where was the series filmed.
The Origins and Premise of Salute Your Shorts
Salute Your Shorts was an American comedy television series that captivated young audiences in the early 1990s. Based on Steve Slavkin’s 1986 book “Salute Your Shorts: Life at Summer Camp,” the show aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1992, with reruns continuing until early 1999. The series took viewers on a hilarious journey through the escapades of teenage campers at the fictional Camp Anawanna.
The show’s quirky title originates from a common summer camp prank where campers would steal a boy’s boxer shorts and hoist them up a flagpole, prompting others to salute the underwear as if it were a flag. This playful spirit set the tone for the entire series, which blended humor, friendship, and the quintessential summer camp experience.
Setting the Scene: Camp Anawanna
Camp Anawanna served as the backdrop for all the mischief and mayhem. While fictional, the show was actually filmed at Franklin Canyon Park and the Griffith Park Boys Camp within Griffith Park in Los Angeles. This real-world setting lent an authentic feel to the campers’ adventures, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the summer camp atmosphere.
Characters and Cast: The Heart of Camp Anawanna
The success of Salute Your Shorts can be largely attributed to its colorful cast of characters, each bringing their unique personality to the camp dynamics. Let’s take a closer look at the main players:
- Michael Ray Bower as Eddie “Donkeylips” Gelfen
- Heidi Lucas as Dina Alexander
- Venus DeMilo Thomas as Telly Radford
- Danny Cooksey as Bobby Budnick
- Kirk Baily as Kevin “Ug” Lee, the camp counselor
- Trevor Eyster as Sponge Harris
- Megan Berwick as Z.Z. Ziff
The show’s ensemble cast brought a diverse range of personalities to the screen, from the mischievous troublemaker Bobby Budnick to the intellectual Sponge Harris. This variety allowed viewers to find characters they could relate to and root for throughout the series.
Behind the Scenes: Production and Creative Team
Salute Your Shorts was a collaborative effort between Propaganda Films and Nickelodeon Productions. The creative mind behind the show was Steve Slavkin, who not only wrote the original book but also served as the series creator. Slavkin’s vision for the show was to capture the essence of summer camp life, with all its ups and downs, friendships, and rivalries.
The production team made the clever decision to have Dr. Kahn, the camp director, as a heard-but-never-seen character. This added an air of mystery to the camp’s leadership and allowed the focus to remain on the campers and their interactions with the hapless counselor, Ug Lee.
The Impact of Salute Your Shorts on 90s Television

Breaking New Ground in Children’s Programming
How did Salute Your Shorts differentiate itself from other children’s shows of its time? The series took a more realistic approach to depicting youth experiences, avoiding the overly sanitized portrayals often found in children’s television. It wasn’t afraid to show conflicts between characters or address more complex emotions, all while maintaining its comedic core.
This approach resonated with young viewers who appreciated seeing a more authentic representation of peer relationships and summer camp life on screen. The show’s success paved the way for future Nickelodeon series that would continue to push the boundaries of children’s programming.

A Great Show!
I remember watching this show when I was little on Nickelodeon. I haven’t seen it in a long time and I really miss it. I remember watching this show with other Nickelodeon classics, like the older Rugrats episodes, Rocko’s Modern Life, Doug, Aaahh! Real Monsters, Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, and many other great Nick shows. I really miss the days when Nick aired good shows like this.
Salute Your Shorts told the story of a bunch of kids at camp Anawanna. There was the camp counselor Kevin Ug Lee who the kids always abused, which was hysterical.
