The New York Rangers are another very old National Hockey League team and the first American club to win the Stanley Cup. The team was founded in 1926 and won its first Stanley Cup in the second season. It is worth noting that the New York Rangers can be considered a club that was disastrously unlucky in the finals, since out of 11 attempts to win an honorary trophy, they were able to become owners of only four cups.
The club won its last Stanley Cup in season 19.93-1994 Now, like most legends of the twentieth century, the New York Rangers should not expect incredible results, as the peak of success has passed. Of course, the team regularly participates in the championships and shows its skills, but in modern hockey there are quite a few other young clubs whose strength and skill are much higher than those of the “oldies”. However, we want to delve deeper into the history of one of the most popular hockey clubs in this article.
Creation of a club
The history of the New York Rangers club began in 1924, when there were only 6 teams in the National Hockey League. Before the start of the 1924/25 season, the leadership of the league was faced with the question of the need for expansion. From a financial standpoint, New York City was the best place to start a new team. But after some time, the New York Americans team appeared in the league, which Tex Rickard (owner of Madison Square Garden) decided to found.
Subsequently, Rickard invited his colleague Conn Smythe to form the backbone of the new Rangers team, using the already existing Americans as the basis. The press dubbed the new team the Tex Rangers. It was because of this that another nickname went, which was reborn into the official name of the team – the New York Rangers.
The team’s players – brothers Bill and Ban Cook, along with Frank Boucher – were one of the first great trios in the NHL. Bush alone managed in eight seasons, from 1927 to 1934, 7 times to receive the Lady Byng Trophy, which is awarded to the top gentleman of the league. Boucher was an excellent passer, and Cook was considered one of the most dangerous shooters in the league. The New York link twice led the club to the championship title – in 1928 and in 1933. It is worth noting that Frank Bush managed to lead the team to the third title at 1940th, though already as a coach. In their first 6 seasons, the Rangers have made five playoff finals. Frank Boucher became the top passer season after season, and in 1933 Bill Cooke won his second title of the league’s top scorer.

In the 1947-48 season, Buddy O’Conner became the very first Ranger to win the Hart Trophy (a trophy awarded to the most valuable player in the NHL). During the 1950s, the Rangers brought in many brilliant players who later became Hall of Famers such as Gump Worsley, Andy Bathgate, Harry Howell, Bill Gatsby and Dean Prentice. The subsequent successes of the team were associated with them, and a little later, the Rangers began to get into the playoffs more and more often.
From 1966-75, the Rangers consistently made the playoffs, which was a good momentum against the background of the team’s past failures. An interesting fact is that since the same 1979 and for nine years, all the teams that knocked the Rangers out of the playoffs then played in the final. In 1989, Neil Smith took over as general manager of the New York Rangers (the 1994 championship is associated with his arrival). Before the start of the 1991-92 season, Neil Smith acquired legendary center forward Mark Messier from Edmonton, who won the Hart Trophy in that championship and immediately became the charismatic leader of the Rangers.

Over a career spanning a quarter of a century, Mark was able to become the second player in the history of professional hockey in the number of games played (1756), the third in career points scored (1887) and the second in points scored in playoff matches (295). Messier also won the Stanley Cup six times with his team. It is worth noting that the hockey player had exactly “his own” team, since Mark is the only athlete in the history of the National Hockey League who could lead two different teams to victory in the championship. Messier acted as the captain of each of the clubs, demonstrating not only the perfect game, but also outstanding leadership qualities. Many athletes of those times noted that Mark was an exceptional professional, in whose life hockey took first place. That is why the hockey player managed to achieve such amazing results. In terms of goals in the NHL championships, he ranks third, while being the most productive player among Europeans in the entire history of the NHL in terms of goals, points, assists in both the regular season and the NHL playoffs. In 2017, he was included in the list of the 100 greatest hockey players in the history of the NHL. Interestingly, it is Jaromir who holds the Rangers record for most points in a season (2005-06) with 123 and for the most goals scored in a season (2005-06) with 54.

The fight of the Boston club against the Rangers and the spectators in 1979 was the only case in the history of hockey when the fight of the players went to the spectator stands, and the Boston hockey players became the instigators of the disgrace. One of the fans of the “Rangers” was not a mistake and began to resist the offender. But then Bob Miller, Al Secord, Craig McTavish, Brad McCrimmon and Tom Songin joined the Boston forward. One of the most incredible stories in the NHL is associated with the New York Rangers. In 1928, in the second game of the final series against the Montreal Maroons, the club’s general manager and coach, 44-year-old Lester Patrick, replaced the injured goaltender Lorne Chebot and stood in goal himself. The story ended in a very Hollywood way – the Rangers became champions, and Patrick became a national hero.
