This is critical for your point of sale software to run smoothly, but also for your customers to be able to browse your online channels while exploring your physical store. Under a lease, the renter is considered a tenant and given exclusive possession for the time agreed to by both parties, otherwise known as the “term” of the lease. The term will outline what you’re allowed to do in the space, such as modifications, hours of operation, and several other key aspects.
When evaluating a retail space, request a comprehensive estimate of your monthly payment. Depending on your space, additional expenses could equal base rent, doubling your monthly payment amount. This could devastate your budget if you weren’t prepared to pay for it.
Licenses
Depending on your geography and the length of your pop-up shop, you may need a license rather than a lease. A license gives you, the licensee, the legal authority to use the landlord’s asset. In some cases, without a license, using the property is unlawful.
Generally, licenses are given out for short-term occupants and come with a limited arrangement that sometimes doesn’t guarantee exclusive use of the property.
Permits
Each region has its own legal regulations and business permit requirements. Many cities, for example, require a permit to sell food and alcohol. So, if you plan to serve champagne at your opening, you’ll need to secure the appropriate permit.

- Is there internet or WiFi? You’ll need an internet connection to process transactions and accept credit card payments, whether you’re using Shopify POS or a mobile card reader. So determine if it’s included or if you need to set it up yourself.
- Will you need insurance? Getting property insurance is often a prerequisite when signing a lease agreement. This kind of coverage protects you from a number of things that could go wrong, including, but not limited to, theft, venue or glass repairs, and merchandise damage.
- How much of a deposit is required to secure the venue? Often, if your pop-up shop will span multiple months, the rental deposit is equivalent to a month’s rent. For shorter timelines, you might be expected to put down a third of the total rent payment. Be sure to find out how and when you’ll get your deposit back after the pop-up is over.
- What type of foot traffic can you expect? It’s a good idea to do your own research on foot traffic, but sometimes the property owner will have numbers they can share with you. This becomes even more pertinent if you’re getting a booth at a trade show.
Evolving your pop-up shop for a post-pandemic world
The pandemic will have a lasting impact on shopper behavior, so there are some key services you’ll want to consider offering to ensure a safe, convenient, and profitable pop-up experience.
We’re already seeing a demand for “dark stores”, where retail sales aren’t fueled by pedestrian traffic, but by curbside pick-up and same-day delivery. With proximity becoming the selling feature for your pop-up shop, alternative pickup and delivery options should be top-of-mind.
Consider offering the following:
- Curbside pickup. Also known as click and collect or buy online pickup in store (BOPIS), curbside pickup is a safe and convenient way to shop, allowing shoppers to order from you online and then swing by your pop-up shop to pick it up curbside or at a designated pickup point.
- Contactless payments. As health concerns grew in 2020, more consumers began seeking out safer options for transactions. According to our data, 62% of buyers are now more comfortable making in-store purchases with digital or contactless payments, according to Shopify’s Future of Retail Report 2021.
- QR codes. The use of QR codes makes the retail checkout disappear completely.With QR codes, mobile shopping is even easier. Shoppers can use their smartphone to scan a code and complete their purchase online via their mobile devices. If you’re a Shopify merchant, Shopcodes (Shopify’s QR code app) lets you generate QR codes within your store.
- Appointment shopping. Another option for safer shopping is to reduce the number of people who are in the store at a given time. One way to do this is with appointment shopping, where you only book one or a handful of shoppers for a particular time slot. According to Shopify data, 50% of shoppers indicated that this would be relevant to them—especially among shoppers in Italy, Spain, France, and the UK.

How to market your pop-up shop
When determining your promotional strategy, remember what consumers go to pop-ups for: an immersive, unique, in-person brand experience. According to Retail Touchpoints, most consumers want unique services and products, localized assortments, and optimal pricing. If your pop-up offers any of those things, spread the word!
There are plenty of ways to go about getting PR for your event, including targeting traditional media, leveraging influencer marketing, and pitching your pop-up to local bloggers.
Targeting media and influencers
Keep your target customer in mind when creating a list of media outlets to contact, thinking about where they most likely find information on local events and what publications and websites they might regularly read.
Audience size isn’t always the most important factor when it comes to promoting your pop-up.
Micro-influencers may have smaller followings, but dismissing them completely could mean missing out on a potential partner who doesn’t have a large geographical reach but is influential in your pop-up’s area. Here are a few other tips to consider:
- Create a list of the key influencers, bloggers, and digital creators that best represent your vertical and reach out to them, highlighting different incentives for them to get involved. Set aside some budget to offer free products in advance of your pop-up launch if they’re not already familiar with your brand, and/or offer them an exclusive discount code to share with their audience.
- Understand who you’re pitching and what their needs are. There’s nothing wrong with using a template, but you’ll still have to customize it to elicit a good response rate.
- Give the media enough advance warning about your event to leave them time to do a story. Aim for two to three months before launch for local print, and two weeks for online media.
- Keep your media pitch short and simple. Be considerate, and make sure all of the important information about your event is prominent and easy to find.
- Open your pop-up shop on a high note. Pretty soon, gatherings and parties will be safe again. When that time comes, consider throwing a launch party and inviting an exclusive list of who’s who in your local region. For example, when apparel brand Kith opened a pop-up in Paris, it had a fantastic turnout and received great coverage from influential local blogs read by its target demographic.
Build buzz for your pop-up shop with social media
Be ready to maximize your exposure through social media before, during, and after your event—not only with your current and future customers, but with the editors and influencers whose interest you’ve piqued.
Pre-pop-up
- Keep any buzz you established with your initial outreach going. Include a branded hashtag in your press materials and other collateral to help you find and curate content posted about your event online.
- Identify co-marketing opportunities. Ask hotels and restaurants near your pop-up to mention you on their social media feeds, offering them some free promotion in return. Tourists love to return home with a unique product and story they discovered on vacation.
- Post behind-the-scenes content on your own social channels, showing your pop-up being built and set up. Give users a sneak preview of the products they can expect to see. Host an online contest and announce the winner at your pop-up.
- Send influencers, bloggers, and creators your products and ask them to post about them. The more products they can touch and feel, the more likely they are to connect with one of the products and post about them. Note: make sure to schedule this beforehand and get in contact with them 3-4 weeks before your launch.
At the pop-up
- Music for the mood. What kind of mood are you trying to create in your store? Make sure your playlist matches that. If you’re a streetwear fashion brand, orchestra music may not be the right fit.
- Encourage user-generated content. You have to create moments around your store that make customers want to take a picture or a video. In other words, you have to make your store Instagrammable. This could mean a selfie wall, a personalization of the product, or funny signage that people want to share and remember. You want customers taking as many pictures around the store and posting them online—you benefit from the free advertising and positive word of mouth. You can even gamify it to incentivize sharing with contests.
- Encourage influencers to create content. Taking it a step further, encourage Instagram influencers and TikTok creators to create and share content while at your pop-up. This will help you build a community around your brand—and bring their entire fanbase to your pop-up and/or website as well.
When Bev and Highline Wellness teamed up with Neyborly to launch a Valentine’s Day-themed pop-up called “The Dating Shop”, they invited TikTok creator David Suh—a photographer who creates content promoting self-love—to be a part of their experience. The pop-up provided David with a unique opportunity to do a meet-and-greet with his fans, while also creating fresh content featuring customers engaging with the products in real time.
At the same pop-up, florist brand Petal Mistry did a flower wall installation for couples to take photos in front of—a concept quite literally borne out of people’s commitment to getting the perfect Instagram shot. (And people are willing to trek for a perfect backdrop—especially when they’ve been stuck on their couch for a year.)

Post-pop-up
- Don’t let the conversation stop once your pop-up is over. Keep up the buzz you worked so hard to build and continue engaging with people talking about your brand and the pop-up experience.
- Leverage user-generated content on your website, social feeds, product pages, and other online channels. Bazaarvoice found that more than two-thirds of shoppers prefer real customer photos of brands, not just on display or professional shots. Interesting product page photos can increase conversions by as much as 24%.
- Use your point-of-sale to collect email addresses and run targeted social media ads to drive shoppers to your online store. The lessons you learn from your pop-up can inform future digital campaigns.
Evaluate your pop-up shop’s success
Among the first things you should do when planning a pop-up is identify your shop’s goals and set specific key performance indicators (KPIs). This will help you understand what you’re trying to accomplish and eventually help you determine whether your venture was successful.
Conducting a postmortem will show you what you can do differently next time and whether selling in person is an effective channel for you.
Be sure to closely analyze your pop-up’s metrics, such as sales, foot traffic, brand awareness, and new email leads.
Examine sales metrics
There’s more to retail than just sales, but strong sales is the ultimate end goal. When you dig into your data, consider the following sales metrics:
- Sales by date. Sales by date can help you determine the best timing for your next pop-up. Knowing which days or hours were particularly busy is also useful information for planning special promotions and giveaways and for knowing when you need to add more staff.
- Sales by customer. Sales by customer can be broken down to both the average total items and total dollars spent. You can use this data to create refined customer profiles, which you can then analyze to segment your customers. You’ll also gain insights into price sensitivity, purchasing habits, and product preferences that can inform online promotions and campaigns.
- Sales by product. Zooming in on things like sales by stock-keeping unit (SKU), variants (e.g. color, size, etc.), and vendor can help you evaluate your products themselves. This information can tell you which product lines to invest in and which to consider scraping. Your bestsellers will also inform your visual merchandising and window displays.
- Sales by employees. Knowing which of your employees generate the most revenue can provide insights you can incorporate into the hiring and training of future employees, even if you’re not running a traditional commission-based compensation structure.
Track foot traffic
In the past, measuring foot traffic was hard to do and often yielded less-than-accurate data. Now, there are foot traffic counters that make it easy to learn not only how many people are walking into your store, but who they are and what preferences they have.
If you have room in your budget, consider using a traffic counter like Dor, Aislelabs, or ShopperTrak. These tools provide accurate, by-the-minute foot traffic analysis.
Once you have a grasp on how many people entered your pop-up, you can drill down into other metrics, like conversion rate (the number of sales divided by the total foot traffic).
Measure social media mentions and engagement
What happens offline is only half the story. Just as important is how an offline experience impacts your brand online. One way to look at this is by analyzing your social media mentions and engagement before, during, and after your pop-up.
Look at how many conversations your promotional hashtag inspired and how customers engaged with it via user-generated content. If you used a branded hashtag, track and measure impressions or conversations. And if you ran a contest or specific giveaway, look at how many entrants you had and how many emails you gained.

Examples of pop-up shops to inspire new and emerging brands
Many of the qualities of a successful pop-up have stayed the same, but the pandemic has brought about some key changes in consumer behavior that are being reflected in the pop-up experiences we’ve seen recently. The desire for human connection, the interplay between online and offline, and deep support for local vendors are chief among these trends.
Below are some examples of emerging brands who have launched successful pop-ups—without huge budgets—that reflect the new shopping landscape. Keep reading for inspiration.
The Dating Shop
In this collaborative pop-up leading up to Valentine’s Day, human connection led the strategy. The pop-up was meant to raise awareness for sparkling wine brand Bev and CBD brand Highline Wellness. And while the products were clearly placed throughout the store, they weren’t the focal point.
In fact, to market this pop-up, singles in the Bay Area were asked to answer a personality quiz and applied in advance to be matched for blind dates while at the shop (socially distanced and with masks, of course). And they were incentivized to bring their friends. For couples, private bookings were taken for photoshoots in front of photogenic flower installations.

Although brands with existing customer bases will continue to benefit from the transactional element of pop-up shops (e.g. stores serving as locations for same-day pickup), most new and emerging brands will need to create immersive experiences to stand out from the crowd.
Petal Mistry
What was once an at-home business, Petal Mistry validated her business idea with a pop-up concept before launching her business online. This may seem like an unusual route, but it’s one that we expect to see more of in coming months as brands realize that some in-person acquisition tactics may actually be more affordable than digital advertising.
Setting up shop in a strip mall in Palo Alto, surrounded by cafés and complementary brands, founder and florist Priya filled the small space with her unique and tropical floral arrangements. She made more than a month’s worth of sales in just two days.

Paka Apparel
Not all pop-ups need a physical space—or even inventory. Take Paka Apparel for example. The brand’s clothing is made from one of the most functional and sustainable materials on earth: alpaca wool. Three months into the pandemic, Paka Apparel founder, Kris Cody, decided to go on tour with his two alpacas—Chaska and Luna—to meet customers in-person.
“While everyone was going online, I really wanted to go offline and connect with people. I saw how much fear technology and the media was causing. I wanted to give people a break from it. Alpacas are magnetic creatures, so I made them the focal point of my tour instead of pushing the products in an unnatural way,” says Kris.
Knowing that the bulk of his customer base was in the U.S. West Coast, he organized the “Paka Tour” down the coast with his alpacas and trailer in tow. All he had was his mobile point-of-sale and unique wood-carved $20 gift cards that could be used to purchase anything on Paka Apparel’s website. He brought his alpacas to farmers markets, parks, and surfing competitions, offering free alpaca hugs to whoever wanted them.
“Without any product we created this incredible funnel from offline to online just by collecting emails in exchange for gift cards. We got thousands of customers into our system over the course of two months,” says Kris.

No Free Coffee
No Free Coffee, an LA-based coffee shop also known for their colorful merch, launched their Tiny Café pop-up concept in March of 2021—a hole in the wall (literally) decorated as a tiny door where baristas serve customers coffee from the other side.
The concept was inspired by the wine windows that became popular in 17th century Italy during the bubonic plague. To help prevent transmission and keep society well-lubricated, wine producers sold their wine through small windows. Similarly, No Free Coffee knew their products were essential during the pandemic and went to great and creative lengths to safely serve their customers.
The brand shared promotional pre-launch videos and behind-the-scenes footage explaining the history of the Tiny Café and letting their followers know when they’ll be launching their tiny pop-up. The video content alone earned them over 100,000 views and grew their social media following significantly leading up to the launch.

Neighborhood Goods
Neighborhood Goods is a new kind of department store with an online presence and three retail locations. They work with more than 100 hand-selected brands, from major international names to direct-to-consumer startups to bootstrapped local concepts. The company strives to bring together brands, restaurateurs, musicians, and artists to engage with customers and support local communities. And they’ve seen a lot of success recently in hosting local vendors’ pop-ups in their own stores and restaurants.
For two weeks in March, Neighborhood Goods hosted a pop-up for Austin-based noodle cup company Chop Chop at their store in South Congress. Chop Chop’s founders offered mouthwatering specials for Neighborhood Goods customers while also selling their famous noodle cups.
And this summer, Neighborhood Goods is launching a pop-up space, Common Goods, that will provide a free platform for brands, restaurateurs, musicians, and artists whose businesses have been affected by COVID-19 to engage with their customers for the first time since the pandemic hit.

Title and Text
: Customize the color, style, and content of the display text and confirmation message.
Form Fields
: Customise the placeholder text and style of the form fields and toggle the Name and Birthday fields on or off.
Action Buttons
: Customize the behavior and style of the primary button and close icon. The action button can be set to an email address or phone number. Alternatively, you can set it to open a page on your website or an external website.
Background
: Set a background color for your pop-up and upload an image for layouts that include one.

Use the Settings tab at the top left of the editor to configure the pop-up behaviour. Settings available will vary depending on which style of pop-up you’re creating. The following options can be adjusted here:
An internal name for your pop-up (eg, lead generation form).
Configure which actions will trigger the pop-up for visitors.
Decide how often to display the pop-up for returning visitors.
Choose when to permanently stop displaying the pop-up based on the visitor’s actions.
Select a timeframe for the pop-up. This is handy if you want to offer a limited-time discount to new signups, for example.
Check the box here to enter your email address and specify how often you want to be notified of new submissions. You can choose from immediately, once daily, once weekly, or once a month.

Managing Pop-ups
To view and manage any pop-ups you’ve created:
Go to the Square Online Overview page.
Choose Communications > Pop-ups.
Click the . . . icon > Edit to make changes to the settings. This will load the pop-up preview.
Click the Publish button to update the pop-up on your live website.
Note: The pop-up will be temporarily disabled during editing, and you’ll need to publish your site again after making changes.
How to set up a pop-up shop
How to set up a pop-up shop is one of the most frequent questions we get asked. Setting up a bricks and mortar pop-up store is a lot of work and while Storefront are the experts in finding venues for pop-up shops, there are many other factors that are equally important.
We’ve prepared the below checklist to help anyone who is contemplating running a pop-up shop. It takes the form of a list of questions and statements we recommend you consider before you go any further. Make sure you have considered every aspects and have an idea how to answer most of them.
It won’t all be relevant to you as so much of it depends on the specifics of your business, your product and what you’re trying to achieve with a pop-up shop. Nevertheless, we hope you find it useful and if you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
We have broken the entire pop-up store journey into six phases; Planning, Getting Started, Ready for Opening, Operation, Closing and Evaluation.
Prepare for your pop-up store
Stage 1. Planning
- Have a clear objective – what are you trying to achieve with your pop-up shop?
This first item to tackle is probably the most important. Much of the success of your pop-up shop will depend on how stringent and thorough you are at the planning stage.
To do this properly you need to have a clear understanding of what you are trying to achieve and what it means for your business. In short, what’s your objective?
Are you looking to build your brand? Get new business? Simply test out your products? Raise awareness? Launch a new product? See what it’s like to have a retail presence?
These are all valid objectives and ones many brands have employed before. Just make sure you know what you’re trying to achieve.
A clear understanding of your objective will help you to accurately complete the rest of your planning. Every person involved in the project should know what the objective is.
Keep your objective in mind when considering the following:
- Budget – How much are you able or willing to spend on a pop-up shop in order achieve those goals? Budget will play a huge factor in teh rest of your plans. You need to be clear as to how much your are going to spend and what you are going to get back from it.
Location – Which country, city and neighbourhood provides the best option for your business to achieve your goal? Consider footfall and foot traffic as well as branding and behaviour. Where is your ideal audience most likely to be? What kind of person are they?
- Venue – what does the space need to have in order for you to achieve your goals?
What utilities do you need? (wi-fi, video equipment, or kitchen space, for example) and how will you use them? Most spaces include this in the price, but always double-check.
Will you need storage? Will you need storage in the store or will you need storage elsewhere?
Design – how do you want your pop-up store to look? What will most appeal to customers and foot traffic alike?
- Digital and offline synchronisation – understand how you’re going to couple your offline sales with your digital sales and ecommerce set up. Is it the same customer currently standing at the till who ordered something online last week?
How are you going to promote it? Making people aware of your pop-up store is very important as you may not be able to rely solely on footfall (depending on where you’re located).
Success? You should have an understanding of what success will look like and what factors will affect it. Is it a revenue target? A customer engagement target? Number of social media likes or sales? Online sales?
Set up your pop-up store
Stage 2. Getting started
Make sure you’re aware of what’s going on around your venue for the duration of your stay. If there are building or road works planned you need to know about it and decide whether it’ll impact your ability to achieve your goal. What will the traffic outside be like? What do the shops around you look like? Are they having work done?
Pick your location and book your venue. You can do this through the Storefront platform or work with our concierge team who can liaise with the landlord for you. They’re all retail experts so feel free to lean on their expertise.
Don’t forget to make sure your plans work with the landlord’s requirements – check there isn’t a limit on retail operating hours or similar that could scupper your plans
Insurance – better safe than sorry.
Get any permits, licenses, in order. This will vary on the nature of your pop-up store, the nature of your retail and the country/city you are in. Do your research ahead of time.
Visit your pop-up space and figure out its configuration so you always have a clear picture in your mind.
What will your window displays look like? How will you get your message across?
You may need to purchase or hire equipment such as fixtures, furniture, lights and decorations.
Hire your staff. Staff are incredibly important. Successful pop-up shops are staffed by enagaing, exuberant and on brand staff. They are the face of your brand so it is critical that you get people you trust to engage with your consumers. Don’t scrimp on this one, get people with retail experience or people you can trust.
Start marketing. It is never too early to start drumming up buzz for your pop-up shop. Awareness is important.
How will you take payments? If you want people in and shopping you’ll need a foolproof and secure way of taking payments. There are a number of payment systems out there that sync directly with the WiFi and can be securely run from a mobile phone. If you’re planning a ticketed event, select a solution to sell and scan tickets.
Stage 3. Ready for opening
Determine your pop-up store’s policies such as whether animals are allowed and if only customers can use your restrooms. What happens if a shopper becomes unwell?
Do something to draw visitors in – when you’re planning your marketing make sure you include how you’re going to get people walking past to come in.
Give away swag. People love free stuff so consider giving away branded merchandise and make sure you plan it and order it well in advance. It doesn’t have to be your actual products. Think t-shirts, pens, stickers, mugs, chargers, umbrellas, batteries… Be as creative as you can – just bear in mind your objective.
Events. Are you going to hold events during your pop up? They can be a great way to mobilise your customers and deliver impactful experiences. Try and tie them into your products and your brand.
Stay in touch with your landlord. They are a person who probably has a fair amount of experience using their space. Keep them up to date with your plans and how it’s going. They want you to be successful and may be able to help.
Test everything, from the lights and music to payment and other online systems.
Are you going to have a grand opening? Think about whether you’re going to start with a bang. Retail relies heavily on the experience you can deliver. An opening event is a great excuse to put on a show. Wrap it up with your marketing efforts.
Stage 4. Operation
Opening and shopper hours. When are you going to be open? Make these decisions early and communicate them as consistently as possible.
Determine employee policies and think about how you can engage and motivate your staff. A happy employee will give a much greater level of service to your consumers.
Cleaning – keeping the store neat and tidy is important and you need to decide whether it’s something staff can cover or if you need to look into a separate cleaning service.
Maintenance and technical support. Make sure you have an understanding of how your kit works and put a process in place in case something goes wrong. Do you need contingencies for taking payments in case you go offline? Do you have a person you can call in case of technical issues?
How are you going to say goodbye? A big party? An email? Make sure it is in line with your overall objective. Your last few days or hours are a great opportunity to give it one final push to engage with consumers.
Stage 5. Closing
Clean up the space. You will need to make sure you leave enough time and energy to probably clean up the space. If you’ve created quite a mess consider a private cleaning firm to come in and clean up after you. You’ll want to leave it in as good a state as you found it.
Dispose of rubbish responsibly. Commercial waste needs to be disposed of in line with local regulations. Again, there are services you can look into that provide all in one solutions.
Take down and disassemble all displays, furniture, banners, signs, and any furniture you customized for your pop up. Can you recycle them for future projects?
Return keys to the landlord. Make sure that any equipment provided with your rental ends back in the right hands.
Stage 6. Evaluation and analysis
- Measure your performance against the objectives and any benchmarks you created.
Determine what your overall success metrics were. If it was social media engagement what was the impact of the pop-up? How many shares did you get? New followers? If it was sales then what was your net revenue? New customers? How many sign ups did you receive?
Promote the success of your project internally in your company and externally. Share your good work with other brands and customers.
Reach out to your customers and anyone who helped the project to say thank you – including the landlord.
Ask yourself: Would you do it again? was the location right? What would you do differently next time?
Learn from any mistakes, and take note of the elements that worked so you can go bigger and better next time around.

70% of all retail sales happen offline, and research from IHL Group found that for every company closing stores, there are two opening physical shops.
Clearly, there is a ton of value in having a branded physical space — and online companies are increasingly taking note. Online-first companies such as Warby Parker, Away, and Bonobos have decided to set up shop offline and are continuing to expand.

How much should you budget for your pop-up? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this, as your costs will depend on several factors, from the duration and size of your initiative to your shop’s location and the shopping experience you want to provide.
For instance, a simple pop-up booth in a mall or at an event could cost a couple thousand dollars. Andrew Pearson, the owner of Asia Yogies, says that their pop-up store at a high-end mall in Hong Kong cost them 20,000 HKD ($2,500 US) for four days.
But the case will be entirely different for large standalone stores in prime locations, which could cost tens of thousands of dollars, if not more.
Here are some of the things to think about when budgeting for your pop-up shop:
Pop-up locations.
Real estate will be one of your biggest and most important expenses, so it’s something you should think about early on. The main factors that will affect your leasing costs are the size of the space and location that it’s in.

Design and architecture.
Think about how you want your store to be designed and built. How will you utilize the pop-up space? What activities are you planning to run? How do you want guests to feel?

Figure out the kind of experience you want to create by listing the activities that you’ll hold in the store. What will guests be doing? What do you want them to see, hear, smell, and feel? Use the answers to these questions to guide your pop-up strategy.
Event
Many brands incorporate events into their pop-up, and for good reason. Events like press previews, customer parties, classes, and speaking engagements are a great way to bring people together and showcase your brand story.
To that end, you should lease a space that has the room and equipment to support whatever event you’re planning to organize. If you’re inviting speakers, for instance, then you’ll need a space with the right audio-visual equipment. Serving food and drinks? You may want to look for something with a kitchen or a bar.
When the fashion e-tailer Showpo had its LA pop-up, the company held a launch party the night before. Showpo invited several influencers for a night of food, drinks… and lots of Instagrammable moments.
Exterior pop-up shop factors.
Whether or not we want to admit it, people like to judge things by their appearance. In the same way that readers judge a book by its cover, customers judge retail stores by their exteriors.
For this reason, you need to evaluate the external components and features of the properties you’re considering. Here are some of the things you should look at.
Signage: Does the space have enough room for your store signage? If you’re open at night, are you able to illuminate your sign so people can see it?
Overall look and feel: You want the space to jive well with your company theme and style. If you’re a modern brand, for example, then your pop-up should be in a contemporary-looking building. Going for a classic or rustic look? Then a traditional exterior might be a better option.
You should also look at the property’s state in terms of wear and tear. Shabby-looking buildings are a huge turn off, so make sure everything is in top shape (or at least have the option to upgrade the space’s exteriors if necessary).
Accessibility: People should be able to easily get to your store. If you know that most of your customers are driving, then choose a property with lots of parking. If you’re catering to cyclists or commuters, go for a space that’s conveniently accessible via public transport.
Interior pop-up shop factors.
Now let’s move on to the inside of your store. Here are some of the interior pop-up shop factors to consider when looking at your space:
Square footage: You want a property that’s large enough for you to do your thing, but not too big that you end up paying for space you don’t use. The amount of space you require will depend on what you’re planning to do. If you’re selling lots of merchandise, see to it that you have adequate stock space. Holding an event? Get an estimate of how many guests will attend, and make sure the space can accommodate them.
Lighting: The shop’s lighting should showcase your items in the best possible… well, light. If the current ones aren’t a great fit, ask the property manager if you can install your own lighting.
Internet connectivity: It’s nearly impossible to function without internet connectivity these days, so you’ll need a space that’ll allow you to go online easily. If you’re planning to give your guests internet access, set up a separate network for them. For security reasons, it’s best to keep your store’s internal internet network (i.e., what you’re using to process sales) accessible only to staff to keep data secure.

The next step is to map out how you’re going to market your store. Here are a few ideas:
Do media and influencer outreach.
Identify the influencers that your customers follow as well as the reporters covering your industry, then offer them an exclusive preview of the store before opening day. This is an excellent way to generate buzz on the days leading up to your launch, which can ultimately lead to a higher turnout.
One brand that did a great job with influencer and media outreach is Daily Harvest. When the company set up shop in Los Angeles, it reached out to reporters and bloggers and invited them for a special “VIP Preview” of the space.
Note: unless you’re planning to cover travel expenses, only reach out to influencers and reporters who live locally. In addition to making your pitch more relevant, targeting local individuals increases the chances of them actually showing up.

Evaluate Your Pop-Up Success with the Right Metrics
The best way to determine if your pop-up was a success is to look at the data. The following metrics are a good place to start when evaluating the performance of your shop.
Sales.
Sales are critical to success for just about any retail business. Be sure to track how much products you’ve sold in — and as a result of — your pop-up. To get a clearer picture of the sales you’ve generated, pull up reports according to the following parameters.
Sales per product / category: This helps you see which products or types of products resonated most with your audience, so you’ll know what to stock in the future.
Sales by date and time: Knowing when sales are occurring lets you figure out your store’s peak hours and downtimes, so you can optimize your staffing and operations.
Sales by customer: This will help you get to know your customers better and give you insights into their spending habits, product preferences, and price sensitivity. Your “sales by customer” report can also aid you in building shopper profiles, so you can personalize the customer experience.
Online sales in relevant zip codes: As mentioned earlier, physical retail stores can influence your online sales. It’s a good idea to measure the impact of your pop-up by looking at the online sales that you’ve generated from customers who live in the places where you have a physical presence.
For instance, if you launched a pop-up shop in New York, you can measure the impact of your store on ecommerce by looking at web traffic and sales from users in NYC and neighboring areas.
Foot traffic.
For obvious reasons, it’s important to track the amount of traffic you’ve attracted to your store. The number of visitors who’ve walked through your doors is a great indicator of how effective your marketing efforts are.
It’s fairly easy to measure foot traffic. There are plenty of people counters and sensors in the market that can automatically do this for you.
And if you want to go even deeper, take your foot traffic data and compare it with your pop-up store sales to figure out your conversion rate.
Social engagement and press mentions.
You should also look at your social media conversations and media mentions. These metrics can indicate how well your pop-up resonated with guests and whether or not the community deemed it as interesting and newsworthy.
Brand search volume.
If your brand name gets a decent amount of online searches, you can measure a lift in brand awareness by looking at search volume. Use tools like Google Search Console and Google Trends to see if more people were searching for your brand in the duration of your pop-up.
8 Creative Examples of Branded Pop-up Shops
If you’ve made it this far, you should have a pretty good idea of what type of pop-up you’re going to launch. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to check out what other companies have done in the past.
We’ve mentioned some of these pop-ups earlier in this article, but this section provides a more detailed view of what these stores had to offer.

1. Clarks.
A while back, the shoe company Clarks opened its first North American pop-up store in Toronto. The 1,000 sq. ft. shop did an incredible job in showing off the brand’s best products, as the space was stocked with an edited range from Clarks’ autumn/winter line.
The pop-up experience also featured various elements that told Clarks’ story through the years. There were replicas of Clarks ads dating back to the 1900s and portraits of the company’s founders and early English factories were displayed.
“Not many people are aware that we’re one of the oldest shoe companies with a 190-year history of innovation,” said Christomer Scinto, the brand’s senior vice president and CMO at Clarks Americas in an interview with Marketing Magazine.
“With a limited retail footprint in Canada, it was an opportunity to really bring everything to life.”
2. Showpo.
The online fashion retailer Showpo set up shop in Los Angeles in 2019. According to Showpo’s founder Jane Lu and the company’s brand manager, Rosalie Molloy, they decided to set up shop offline to engage their US customer base. And since LA is one of their top markets, they decided to start there.
“We wanted to build trust with our customers and establish a better connection with them, and we felt like a good way to do that through a pop-up,” commented Molloy.
“The store allows shoppers to come in to touch and feel the products, try on different sizes, and see the breadth of what we can offer as well as the diversity in our range. Beyond that, the shop also lets people come in and be part of the Showpo world for a day, an hour, or even just 15 minutes if they like.”
Beyond selling merchandise, Showpo also had a social media nook in-store, which gave guests plenty of photo opportunities.
“We know that this is how our girl likes to interact with brands,” said Molloy. “She wants to shop, have a picture in-store, try on an outfit and take a mirror selfie. So we’ve kind of incorporated those elements into the shop.”
3. Stacks House.
Pop-ups can also be used to educate and empower. That was the goal of Stacks House, a pop-up museum that featured attractive and Instagrammable installations that aimed to educate guests (women, in particular) on financial literacy.
The rooms in the pop-up contained facts and stats as well as installations designed to help people learn more about their finances.
While Stacks House is an experience-first pop-up, it also had a retail component. Towards the end, guests could purchase books, tote bags, jewelry, and more.
4. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.
Jenis Splendid Ice Creams is no stranger to pop-ups. The company has launched several pop-up shops in cities like New York, Austin, and San Diego. These shops allow the brand to get in front of new audiences and they make Jeni’s products a lot more accessible.
The company does a lot of cool stuff to generate excitement around its stores. For instance, when it set up shop in NYC, Jeni’s gave away free ice cream to anyone who visited on opening day. Plus, it created a special flavor — milk chocolate Bombay — specifically for NYC.
5. Daily Harvest.
Daily Harvest, the direct-to-consumer online brand that sells smoothies, soups, and more, launched a “Refueling Station” Pop-Up in Los Angeles in early 2019. The shop had several interesting offerings, including complimentary smoothies and bowls, an on-site nutritionist, a coin car ride, and Daily Harvest products for purchase.
6. Natori.
Fashion designer Josie Natori celebrated her 40th anniversary by unveiling her debut ready-to-wear line at branded pop-ups in various Bloomingdale’s locations.
The stores, which were open for a little over a month, featured “a special capsule collection that epitomizes the Natori lifestyle hand-crafted in the Philippines.” It was a great initiative that allowed Natori to bring her products closer to her customers, while still maintaining an air of brand exclusivity, thanks to the fact that shoppers can only access the products at Bloomingdale’s stores.
7. Shein.
In 2019, the online fashion retailer Shein ran a 3-day pop-up shop in San Francisco. The store featured the company’s summer collection and was stocked with a range of products that shoppers could try on.
8. Pop-Up Grocer.
Pop-Up Grocer, “a traveling pop-up grocery store,” made a stop in Venice, CA, in early 2020. The hip and colorful store showcased hundreds of products from some of the most innovative and natural brands.
Unlike a traditional grocery store, which typically carries a wide range of common brands that can be found in many households, Pop-Up Grocer carries a carefully curated mix of items from companies you may not have heard of (yet).
“We’re not here for the purpose of your weekly haul of milk, eggs and toilet paper,” founder Emily Schildt told the Los Angeles Daily News. “We want to introduce people to the newest and most interesting products.”
Beautifully designed, the store has several Instagrammable colorful displays to encourage people to share their experience.

But the truth is, there’s a lot of planning that goes into a Pop-Up Store. How can you make sure that your Pop-Up Shop goes off without a hitch?

- Return keys to the space owner. Make sure that any equipment provided with your space rental ends up in the right hands.

Configuring pop-ups — ArcGIS Pro | Documentation
When creating pop-up windows for vector layers, you can customize them so that the information you need is displayed in the most convenient way. Pop-ups can contain custom text, a list of fields, charts, images, attachments, and a series of charts and images displayed in a carousel. You can split, arrange, and rotate selections of items, and apply border styles.
To customize the popup for a layer, right-click the layer in the Contents pane, then click Customize Popups to open the Customize Popups pane.
Pop-up elements
By default, the pop-up contains one column with a list of fields. If the layer has attachments, an image is added. These elements do not display an outline. The choice is made by the buttons located at the top of the panel. Click an item type to add it to the end of the pop-up definition list. If necessary, click the element type and drag it to a specific vertical position. To switch an item to a different type, drag it over the corresponding item in the list to, for example, change an image item to text.This way, you don’t have to delete an existing element and thus change the position of all your elements in the wrong way.
Popup elements support linked data, hyperlinks, ArcGIS Arcade expressions, and HTML code.
The following popup elements are available in the following table:

Field List | Select the fields to be displayed in the pop-up window. By default, this list reflects the visibility of the table fields. If necessary, clear the Use only visible Arcade fields and expressions option to further customize the list. If a set of related records is defined for a layer, then statistics of related numeric fields can also be turned on. Click and drag the selected field to change the order.Sort all fields by right-clicking the Field Alias {Field Name} heading. If necessary, enable HTML mode to convert this element to a pre-filled Text element to further enhance the text. |
Chart | Allows you to create vertical and horizontal bar, line and pie charts. You can only use numeric fields for a chart and for the field used to normalize that chart. Only the first ten fields will be included in the chart, and the x-axis labels will be resized to fit all of the included fields. Diagrams may include title and caption. If necessary, enable HTML mode to further enhance the text. |
Image | Enter the URL of the image or attachment and provide a custom title or caption. For attachments, you have access to the file name from the Field drop-down menu, so you can distinguish between the headers or captions of multiple attachments.Attached images do not appear when publishing a web map or feature layer. If necessary, enable HTML mode to further enhance the title and caption text. |
Attachments | For layers with included attachments, you can display a list of attachments in a pop-up window. In the Configure Pop-ups pane, check the Show attachment list box at the bottom. Once enabled, a pop-up window will show a list of hyperlinks that launch each of the attachments in the default file handler.If you are displaying a popup for an item that does not have an associated attachment and the Show attachment list option has been checked, the popup will show a message that no attachments were found. |
Carousel | A container that can contain multiple charts and images. The order of displaying items is from top to bottom. Use the arrows to move through the list in the pop-up window. Items are displayed in the same order in which they were specified during customization. |
With an item selected, double-click it to edit its properties, or click the Edit Popup Item button. You can also press F2 or Enter to edit its properties.
After editing the item’s properties, click Back to return to the main page of the Customize Pop-ups pane to apply the changes. Changing the selected layer in the Contents pane will also confirm your changes.The changes will be reflected the next time you use the pop-ups.
Tip:
At the bottom of the Customize Pop-ups pane, you can disable pop-ups, customize them using ArcGIS Arcade expressions, change the format of numeric and date fields, and reset them to a previous state.
HTML Mode
You can directly enter HTML to further customize most elements. Turn on the HTML Mode radio button to enter this mode.
In HTML mode, keep the following points in mind:
- Chart and image elements support HTML in titles and captions only.
- Field elements are converted to text elements, which are prepopulated with a table containing the current list of visible fields.

HTML tips
- HTML tags not listed in the table above are not supported and are filtered out.
- The allowed protocols for href and src are https, http, tel and mailto.
- Tags are closed automatically if they are not closed.
- <> & s are extracted from allowed tags, unless they are extracted using & lt; & gt; & amp; & quot;
- UNC references are not supported.
- When using the a tag, the target url href always opens in a new browser tab.
- Disabling HTML mode will result in the loss of all HTML settings.
Item Splitting
Each item added to the popup configuration can be split in half vertically or horizontally to create a unique mesh in the popup. Select one or more elements and click the Split into two horizontally docked elements button to create two identical elements side by side in the original space.
The item cannot be split into pieces that are less than 25 percent or one quarter of a line wide.The Split Horizontally command is also unavailable if there is not enough space to complete the split of any of the selected items.
Alternatively, you can click Split into two vertically docked items to duplicate the selected items as two vertically docked lines; all elements in the original line that are not selected, in this case, occupy those two lines vertically.
Rotate the stencil
The selected stencil can be rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise.As a result, one string of multiple elements will be converted to multiple strings of individual elements, and multiple strings of elements will be converted to a single string.
When converting multiple strings to one, a maximum of four elements are allowed.
To rotate elements, select two or more elements of the same width, or a set of elements that form an area of the same width, and click Rotate Left 90 ° to rotate the selection.
Updating the ordering of pop-up items
The horizontal distribution of multiple items on the same line can be redefined at any time using the ordering drop-down menu.Click the drop-down menu next to the Split buttons to view distribution options when one or more items on the same row are selected. Expand the menu to see a list of the settings available for that row. Place your cursor over the appropriate option to see the percentage of the width. Choose a different location to rearrange the items on that row.
The vertical position of the element can be adjusted manually. To manually move an element edge, hover your mouse over the top or bottom edge where the blue line appears.Click and drag this line to a new location. As the rib moves, the line thickens in all accessible places. When you release the mouse button, the shape of this element and its surroundings will change.
One element cannot bypass another. If vertical movement is not possible, then when you hover the mouse cursor over the edge of the element, the blue line does not appear. If there are multiple locations available and the destination is capturing an adjacent item, no thick blue line appears to indicate that the move is not valid.
Element boundaries
An additional colored outline can be set for all elements. The contour thickness can be in the range from 1 point to 5 points. There is also a No Border option. A standard palette of colors is available.
Deleting popup elements
Deleting an element changes the ordering. Click the Remove Popup Item button to remove one item. Or select one or more items and click the Remove Popup Item button next to the Arrange button to remove all selected items.When you delete an element, the remaining elements will be positioned so that the resulting space is filled. Adjacent elements of the same height in the same row will fill this space. Deleting an element that spans multiple lines will expand all affected lines. If there are no adjacent elements of the same height, the element above or below the same width will be enlarged.

1.notifications with actions

2.time and urgency
Unlike how we often think of notifications, real-time isn’t always better! We strongly encourage developers to think about the user and if the notification they send is urgent information or not. Users can easily get overwhelmed with an overwhelming amount of information and be frustrated if they are interrupted while trying to concentrate.Windows provides several ways to account for the interference of notifications sent:
Raw Notifications: Using raw notifications can be useful for many reasons, especially when it comes down to minimizing interruptions for the user. Sending unhandled notifications will cause the app to log out in the background so you can evaluate whether an immediate delivery notification makes sense in the context of the app. If you want the user to appear immediately, you can open the Local Toast Notification.If the user doesn’t need to see it now, you can create a scheduled toast notification that will trigger later.
Pop-up notification. , you can also trigger an alert to be missed in the lower right corner of the screen and then send the notification directly to the notification center. This is accomplished by setting the SupressPopup property to true. While some skepticism does not push notifications outside of the action center, we can see that in the action center we will see a 2-3x higher engagement rate.Users are faster when they are ready to receive notifications and can control when notifications are interrupted, which is why the content in the Action Center can be so effective at notifying users in a non-invasive manner.
3. Remove unnecessary
Notifications can be stored in the action center for a long time (three days by default). It is imperative to ensure that the content that is here is up to date and set accordingly whenever the user opens an Action Center.You are wasting on user screen space and can use slots that can be used to fetch newer data. Let’s say a user installs an email management application and receives ten email messages and ten notifications along with those messages. Depending on the experience you want, you might want to remove these notifications if the user reads the relevant email or opens the app as a way to remove old clutter from the notification center.
We have a series of ToastNotificationHistory APIs that allow you to see what content is in the support center and also manage those notifications. Respect the user’s screen space and ensure that only relevant and current content is displayed to users.
4.ordering
As mentioned earlier, content stays in Support Center for three days. To help users quickly select the information they are looking for, organize notifications in the Action Center using headers or collections.An example of a header can be seen below.
Group these notifications so that the relevant content comes together (ie, think about a sports app splitting different sports events or sorting messages into groups). Collections are a more obvious way of grouping notifications, while headers are thinner, but both allow for quicker viewing and selection of notifications.
These four items above are the recommendations that we configured using our own telemetry analysis, and in the first and third experiments.However, remember that these recommendations are only for recommendations. We are confident that these rules will help improve the efficiency and performance of your notifications, but nothing replaces user-centered thinking and exploring your own data.
