“Such barely recognizable human images were the outcome of a dialogue with materials. Layers of thick paste were applied to an absorbent sheet of rag paper laid on a canvas, with a layer of colored paste and varnish finally added to the confection.” (Caption, p.17); “After the war France was obsessed with épuration (purging or cleansing). This desire to expunge memories of the Nazi Occupation in the country manifested itself in the ruthless hounding out of Nazi collaborators. This climate also bred existential philosophies emphasizing moral probity and the dilemma of personal freedom, as developed by the likes of Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Its artistic spin-off was a trend established in a series of exhibitions at René Drouin’s gallery from 1943 onwards. […] The painter Jean Fautrier’s Otages (Hostages) exhibition at Drouin’s in October 1945 was one of the first signs of this new artistic direction. Fautrier had been held briefly by the Gestapo in 1943, on suspicion of Resistance activities, and, while in hiding at a sanatorium at Châtenay-Malabry on the outskirts of Paris, had produced a series of heads and torsos morbidly inspired by sounds from the surrounding woods where the Occupying forces regularly tortured and executed prisoners. Playing with thin dolls may affect young girl
Playing with ultra-thin dolls could make young girls want a thinner body, according to new research published today (11 March 2021).
The small-scale study, led by Durham University in the UK, shows that ultra-thin dolls may negatively affect body image in girls as young as five years old.
The researchers warn that the dolls, combined with exposure to ‘thin ideals’ in films, on TV and social media, could lead to body dissatisfaction in young girls, which has been shown to be a factor in the development of eating disorders.
In the research, thirty girls aged between 5-9 years old played with an ultra-thin doll, a realistic childlike doll or a car. Before and after each play session, the girls were asked about their perceived own body size and ideal body size via an interactive computer test using pictures.
Playing with the ultra-thin dolls reduced girls’ ideal body size in the immediate aftermath of play. There was no improvement even when they subsequently played with the childlike dolls or cars afterwards, showing that the effects cannot be immediately counteracted with other toys. The realistic children’s dolls were relatively neutral for girls’ body ideals.
The study, published in the academic journal Body Image, was conducted by researchers from Durham University, Newcastle University and Northumbria University.
Lead author Professor Lynda Boothroyd, from Durham University’s Department of Psychology, said: “Body dissatisfaction is a huge problem, particularly amongst young girls. It can have serious consequences for girls’ wellbeing and lead to eating disorders and depression.
“The results from our study indicate that playing with ultra-thin dolls, which are sold in the millions each year, could have a real negative impact on girls’ body image. This is on top of all the images of unrealistic body sizes they see on TV, in films and on social media. This is something that needs to be addressed in order to reduce the pressure on girls and women to aspire to a ‘thin ideal body’.”
In previous research, the psychologists found that the more TV we watch the more we prefer thinner female bodies.
80 per cent of the girls who took part in the study had access to ultra-thin dolls at home or with their friends and almost all of them also watched Disney and related films, which also tend to portray very thin female bodies.
Dr Elizabeth Evans, from Newcastle University’s School of Psychology, said: “This study isn’t intended to make parents feel guilty about what’s in their child’s toy box, and it certainly isn’t trying to suggest that ultra-thin dolls are ‘bad’.
“What our study provides is useful information that parents can take into account when making decisions about toys. Ultra-thin dolls are part of a bigger picture of body pressures that young children experience, and awareness of these pressures is really important to help support and encourage positive body image in our children.”
In the study, the girls played with the dolls in pairs and before and after their play session, they were asked about their perceived actual body size, ideal body size and ideal adult body size. The children were asked to change the body size in a picture of a girl to what they thought they looked like themselves, what they would like to look like and what they thought a beautiful woman looks like.
Although the samples were not large, this research unusually tested the children before and after doll play which means it can show actual change within individual children. As such, it contributes to a growing number of studies which demonstrate that doll play may affect the beauty ideals that young girls internalise.
Professor Martin Tovee, from Northumbria University’s Department of Psychology, said: “Our study shows how perception of ideal body size and shape is moulded from our earliest years to expect unrealistic ideals. This creates an inevitable body image dissatisfaction which is already known to lead towards disordered eating.”
Current widely available dolls tend to have ultra-thin bodies with a projected body mass index between 10 and 16 which is classed as underweight. Realistic childlike dolls used in the study resembled healthy 7 and 9-year old children.
The research was conducted independently from doll manufacturers.

Optical Illusion of a Young Girl Sinking Into Sidewalk Is Baffling Internet Users
Oftentimes, a picture is taken that is so visually baffling that the internet is left scratching its collective head to make sense of what it actually depicts.
This is known as an optical illusion— something that tricks the eyes into seeing something different to what has actually been captured.
And a recent photograph of a young girl who appears to have been engulfed by a paved walkway is just that.
In the snap, posted to Reddit by user MK24ever, the child, who is wearing a fluorescent pink top is holding a toy aloft, and appears to be waist-deep in the path.
Next to her is a grassy area and there is a hedgerow and tall trees behind.
The snap was captioned: “My daughter, where’s the rest of her?! Ohh I see, do you?”
The image which was posted on May 6 has been liked over 69,000 times and there are over 1,200 comments, which highlight people’s bemusement.
One Reddit user, NotMyMa1nAccount, wrote: “At the very first look I thought the shadows are a dress and she’s lying on the floor.”
Another person, Pork_Chap commented: “Even after you pointing it out, my brain still flip-flops between understanding and confusion.”
XXXTENTACHION added: “I thought she was just in a hole in the ground. The shadow would still be in the same place so that wouldn’t really help if I didn’t know any better.”

After this she puts her hands in her pockets and walks away—as she now simultaneously resembles a giant while her back yard appears to be the size of a dollhouse.

No, this photo does not show a young girl being sold to Muslims as a child bride
A picture is worth a thousand words, and one photo of a young girl crying with a man’s arm around her shoulder and an ISIS flag in the background is provoking a lot of words — and assumptions — on social media.
But the image, now turned into a meme, is spreading an inaccurate message about what’s really going on.
On social media, text above and below the photo says, “To all you misguided, uninformed liberal ‘women’ demonstrating in favor of embracing Islam. This young lady is being sold into sexual slavery as a child bride. She is a Christian. She watched her father beheaded and her mother raped. Where is her safe place?”
The photo was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)
The picture is actually a screengrab from a video of a 2013 Quran recitation competition organized by the Islamic State in Aleppo. A reverse-image search led us to a 2014 report on the contest by Morocco World News, which explains that the girl began to cry during the event after she made mistakes during her recitation:
“The video shows the ISIS member, who was misleadingly presented as the young girl’s groom, having a small chat with her before she recites verses of the Quran.
Feeling embarrassed for making several mistakes during her recitation, Ghada, the young girl, starts crying before the man returns. He then clearly tries to comfort her and boost her spirits.”
AFP Canada (along with other fact-checking websites) also evaluated the miscaptioned photo, and an Arabic-speaking AFP journalist confirmed from the video that the girl is reciting chapter 112 of the Quran.
“She made some errors so the man helps her, and he says, ‘Ma sha Allah (Bravo), can you give me two other chapters?’” the AFP journalist is quoted saying in the story. “She recites the chapter 113 and the man asks the crowd, ‘Who is the winner?’ Apparently the girl wasn’t happy after the crowd’s answer, so she started to cry.”
We could find no other account in which the girl was reported to be a child bride or a Christian who just witnessed her father being “beheaded and her mother raped.”
We know that child marriage is a serious global issue affecting the lives of one in every five girls who is married or in a union before age 19, according to the United Nations Population Fund.
“In the least developed countries,” UNFPA reports, “that number doubles – 40 percent of girls are married before age 18, and 12 percent of girls are married before age 15.”
But instead of raising awareness about the practice, some social media posts are spreading misinformation.
