La Crosse and Eau Claire movie theaters starting to reopen
LA CROSSE/EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Popcorn is popping and previews are showing again inside several movie theatres across the state. After being among the first forced to close, First News at Nine’s Hayley Spitler reports how two local theaters are reopening their doors with extra precautions.
“It’s a little way to escape from reality and right now we need that escape,” said Assistant Manager of Marcus La Crosse Theatre, Erin Fiser.
In March, Governor Evers ordered the closure of movie theatres. Employees like Erin Fiser waited months for her job to be made available again.
“When we first closed it was kind of like ‘we will be back shortly’ and then it just kept going and going and going. It was finally like “oh, we’re here yay” I know I myself am very excited that we’re re-open,” said Fiser.
Marcus Theatre in La Crosse started showing a mixture of new and retro movies Friday with an abundance of new procedures and guidelines in place.
James Bryan, General Manager of Marcus La Crosse Theatre said, “We came up with a great acronym where everyone is a S.T.A.R. We practice social distancing, we have thorough cleaning throughout the facility that you’ll notice almost like a sanitation squad that goes around and is a blend between our ushers and different cleaners that touch those high touch point areas.”
Pre-ordering tickets and concessions items are advised on the mobile app. Even refills can be ordered from inside each theater.
At Marcus Theatres, a piece of tape is placed on each seat to indicate it has been cleaned before use. Additionally, social distancing is being implemented in the theatre.
“We block off two seats between everybody. We do have opportunities for larger families to take four seats together, but we distance people out about six feet or even larger in some cases,” said Bryan.
The theatres are currently operating at about a 50 percent capacity. In-depth cleaning takes place after each showing and counters are wiped down at least every 30 minutes. Masks are required at all times except when eating or drinking and is enforced by management.
For General Manager James Bryan, business will dictate the need for associates. Whether a new hire or coming back, everyone is being re-trained.
“We definitely trained our associates because the job has changed and the environment has changed,” said Bryan. “We do the thorough cleaning that we have to hit those high touch point areas. We’ve been going through the hiring process as well.”
Micon Cinemas in the Eau Claire area is also reopening with extra cleaning, social distancing, and staggered showtimes with reduced capacity and a mask requirement. New releases are expected in the coming week as well as bringing back old favorites to the big screen.

1. The Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation
The Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation, is a sports documentary that follows both the spiritual and physical matters in the sport of lacrosse. This documentary is especially important because it tells the story of the game of lacrosse from the perspective of the Iroquois and the role the sport plays in the culture of the people who originated the game. This film details the pride that the Iriquois take in who they are and the importance of lacrosse as part of their culture, rather than just a sport.
The Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation takes the top ranking due to the emphasis it gives on sharing the story of the sport of lacrosse through the lens of those who originated it.

2. Crooked Arrows
In Crooked Arrows, a new lacrosse coach leads a team of young indigenous lacrosse players to a championship against its wealthier, non-indigenous, prep-school rival. The coach, a son of the chief of a fictional tribe and former lacrosse star, Joe, runs the casino on the tribe’s land and secures approval from the tribal council to expand, though his father disapproves. The condition for the expansion is that Joe must go on a spiritual journey, deciding to restore the high school lacrosse team on the reservation, to bring pride back to the tribe and its game. Though initially a losing team, they begin to win once Joe includes his lacrosse guru and wise man, Crooked Arrow, immersing the team in the cultural and spiritual meaning of lacrosse. The team eventually arrives at the championship game against the prep school where Joe was a star player on the lacrosse team.
Though following a generic sports movie formula, Crooked Arrows earns the second spot due to its portrayal of Native American history and culture. The film is backed by the Onondaga Nation.

3. Keepers of the Game
Another raw documentary about the sport of lacrosse, Keepers of the Game documents the journey of a high school girls lacrosse team in the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory. The documentary directly addresses the gender issues, stereotypes, and sexism within the native culture, as well as the racism afflicting the team beyond the reservation. It also highlights the ongoing battle to preserve native traditions, rituals, and history both within the reservation and beyond. The Salmon River Shamrocks end up shattering the expectations of those who doubted them, reaching the championship against their regional rival.
Keepers of the Games earns a spot on the list not only for it’s raw portrayal of the sport of lacrosse itself, but because it gives light to a real life example of the societal issues plaguing Native American Indians and the fight that many girls lacrosse programs have to prove that they are legitimate.
4. The Grizzlies
In The Grizzlies, inspired by a true story, a teacher, Russ, inspires his ‘underdog’ students to play lacrosse and overcome the issues plaguing their arctic community. The remote, canadian arctic village is bleak and has the highest suicide rate in all of North America. Many of the students in the film are caught between the education system and cultural practices, stuck in toxic relationships and headed for failure. The lacrosse team is formed when Russ thinks it would benefit his students to take out their emotions through sport, giving them goals to aspire to. The Grizzlies creatively exhibits the culture of indigenous arctic peoples and their dynamics, while providing a heartwarming sports narrative, showcasing how sports can heal communities.
The Grizzlies is a more recent lacrosse film and shows a different perspective on lacrosse with being set in a native Canadian village. Based on a true story, The Grizzlies gives a prominent example as to how sports, at any level, can impact people’s lives.

5. A Warrior’s Heart
In A Warrior’s Heart, Conor Sullivan, a lacrosse player who recently moved from California to Virginia, is arrogant, has a temper, and lacks teamwork skills. This all comes undone when his father is killed in action in Iraq. His teammate and friend decides that he has to intervene, taking Connor to a wilderness camp where he teaches him the tribal origins of lacrosse and the Iroquois belief in a creation divinity. Throughout the movie, Connor also falls in love with the coach’s daughter, Brooklyn.
Though the move is predictable by nature, it is a heartwarming look at how the sport of lacrosse, and sport in general, can help someone overcome a difficult period in their life and emerge better on the other side.

FREE Family Movie Series Dates Announced!

La Crosse, Wis. – The La Crosse Loggers announced today that they will be hosting a trio of FREE Family Movie Nights on the State Bank Financial video board this summer at Copeland Park thanks to the support of Altra Federal Credit Union, Gundersen Health System and Auto Value Parts Stores.
The first of three will take place on Friday, July 29 when Altra Federal Credit Union presents “Field of Dreams”. Gates will open at Copeland Park at 6:00 p.m. with the Copeland Park concessions open as well as the HG Orthodontics Family Fun Zone. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to grab a spot in the Copeland Park outfield to view the movie, but grandstand seating will also be available. The movie will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Field of Dreams is about Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella who hears a voice in his corn field telling him, “If you build it, he will come.” Kinsella interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, upon which appears the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. When the voices continue, Ray seeks out a reclusive author to help him understand the meaning of the messages and the purpose for his field.
The second showing will take place on Friday, August 5 when Gundersen Health System presents “The Rookie”. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m., with the movie commencing at 7:00 p.m. The Rookie is a 2002 sports drama film directed by John Lee Hancock and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is based on the true story of Jim Morris, who had a brief, but famous Major League Baseball career in 1999-2000. The film stars Dennis Quaid, Rachel Griffiths, Jay Hernandez, and Brian Cox.
On Saturday, August 27 Auto Value Parts Stores is happy to present the free showing of “Toy Story” at Copeland Park. As with the previous movies, gates will open at 6:00 p.m. and the movie will begin at 7. Toy Story is a 1995 American computer-animated adventure buddy comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by John Lasseter at his directorial debut, Toy Story was the first feature-length, computer-animated film and the first theatrical film produced by Pixar. Toy Story follows a group of anthropomorphic toys who pretend to be lifeless whenever humans are present, and focuses on the relationship between Woody, a pull-string cowboy doll (voiced by Tom Hanks), and Buzz Lightyear, an astronaut action figure (voiced by Tim Allen).

Much has been written about Anton Chigure (Javier Bardem), the bloodthirsty antagonist of the Coen brothers’ Oscar-winning Oscar …Bardem also received an Oscar for his role – everyone noted that his character is like the Terminator, who just can’t be stopped.
Chigurah’s mission throughout the film is to return a suitcase with money from an unsuccessful drug deal between two gangs who shot each other. The film ends with Moss’s death and it is implied that Chigur escaped with the money, while the sheriff is left with nothing. Before leaving the city, Bardem’s character is involved in a horrific car accident in which he suffers an open fracture of his forearm, but it is clear that he will hide from the police anyway.
Such an ending left many in bewilderment, but, most likely, the Coens wanted to show that harmony does not always reign in the world, sometimes it is still chaos, where evil can prevail.It is worth noting that the meaning of the ending of this story is still being analyzed.
Chinatown (1974)

Lacrosse is a very old sport.Its history dates back to the existence of tribes in North America, but it gained true popularity literally in the last 20 years.
Lacrosse came to Ukraine in 2011, and 6 years later, adherents of this sport created the Ukrainian Lacrosse Federation.
“Back in 2011, I saw on the Internet a video of some strange game, and it was love at first sight. My heart just exploded, I could not even sleep for several nights.
