BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.— The High Point University Men’s basketball team picked up a key Big South victory on Friday night (Jan. 29) over Gardner Webb 59-55. Lydell Elmore led HPU in scoring on the night with a game-high 17 points. Freshman Alex Holt saw his first career start on Friday night and nearly brought in a double-double as he scored 12 points and brought down eight rebounds. John-Michael Wright scored 11 points in the win for HPU.
“I thought our kids showed a lot of courage and a lot of heart especially down the stretch,” Coach Tubby Smith said. “I thought John Michael came through with a big shot at the end and we got some big stops. Bryant making those two free throws was huge and the play from Lydell. We did a better job on the boards tonight and when we rebound the ball we give ourselves a chance.”
The Panthers opened up the game by pressuring the Runnin’ Bulldogs and jumping out to a 7-3 lead out of the gate. Denny Slay II hit the first three of the contest to put HPU up four. Gardner Webb came storming back and made it 11-10 with 11:22 to go. With 8:53 to go in the first half, Wright scored four quick points to the Panthers in front 18-13. It looked like the Panthers were going to take a little bit of a lead into the break with a 1:49 to play and the score at 26-22. Gardner-Webb hit a three to make it a one-point game. The Panthers answered as Holt slammed one down with two hands to go up 28-25. Wright hit a three-pointer at the end of the half to put the Panthers up six at halftime.
In the first half alone, Holt scored eight points and five rebounds the freshman took full advantage of his first collegiate starting opportunity.
“Alex gives us a lot of poise, he does not try to do much, Coach Smith said. “He does what we ask him to do. He’s got great hands, he got baptized tonight by a very good team on the road and he pulled through for us. He got huge rebounds and had a big stop for us at the end.”
The Panther lead did not grow to be bigger than six in the second half and Gardner-Webb stayed engaged in the game and continued to fight their way back into the game. With 10:41 to go in the second half, the game was tied at 45. Slay hit a jumper that bumped the High Point lead back up two. The Runnin’ Bulldogs answered and the game continued to follow this pattern to the end. With 6:10 left Gardner-Webb took the lead by one, 50-49. With 3:14 to go in the game, a Wright jumper gave the panthers a 53-50 lead. A three-pointer from Gardner-Webb tied the game at 53-53. Two Holt free throws put HPU up 55-53. With 14 seconds left to play Bryant Randleman hit both free throws to put HPU up three. He would secure the win for the Purple and White 59-55.
The Panthers brought the intensity on defense in game one turning Gardner-Webb over 12 times.
UP NEXT: The Panthers stay in Boiling Springs for game two against the Runnin’ Bulldogs on Saturday at 5:00 PM. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

#4 Shuts Out Gardner-Webb to Open Season

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The #4 NC State Wrestling team opens its season in style, as the Wolfpack traveled to Gardner-Webb and shutout the Runnin’ Bulldogs 42-0.
NC State won all 10 bouts on the day, and seven of those wins were for bonus points.
Fr. Ed Scott (149 pounds) and #2 R-Sr. Hayden Hidlay (157) both scored pins. Scott ended his bout early in the second period at the 3:25 mark, and Hidlay needed just 53 seconds to score the fall.
#10 R-Sr. Tariq Wilson (141) also ended his bout in the second period with a 17-2 tech fall.
#7 R-So. Jakob Camacho (125), #16 R-So. Jarrett Trombley (133), #11 R-Sr. Daniel Bullard (13-3) and R-Sr. Nick Reenan all recorded major decisions.

Frank Sinatra has been at the top of the lists of the best (songs, artists, voices, and so on) for so long and indestructible that it looks more like some kind of artistic deity than a living person.His name is really the first that comes to mind when it comes to those symbolic people who, in the mass consciousness, completely embody American musical culture. For all the abundance of records published by Sinatra, for his almost dimensionless catalog, which continues to swell from year to year, the very essence of his talent will not be missed for long. Meanwhile, Sinatra is not just a darling of fate and a well-promoted showman, but, first of all, a fantastic interpreter, receptive to the trends of the times and able to preserve the best examples of American pop music for several generations of music lovers of all races and nationalities.
Francis Albert Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on December 12, 1915. He was the only child of Dolly & Anthony Martin Sinatra. His father worked as a firefighter, and the family of the future American superstar had nothing to do with music. Frank started working as a teenager. He dreamed of becoming a journalist, and at first he got a job as a loader in the editorial office of the Jersey Observer newspaper, then retrained as a copier.But even the duties of a reporter were still not trusted. Then Frank entered the secretary school, studied typescript and shorthand. Finally, his coverage of minor sporting events began to appear in print. One day, 19-year-old Frank, who occasionally sang for his own pleasure, entered a popular local radio talent competition. Together with three other contestants, the promoters sent him on a test tour, naming the newly-minted vocal quartet Hoboken Four.
After the tour, Sinatra signed his first professional contract.They paid him $ 25 a week. In 1941 he starred in the film Las Vegas Nights, a year later appeared in the film Ship Ahoy.
In January 1942, a new chapter in Sinatra’s biography opens: he conducts his first solo session in the studio and records four solo numbers, one of which – “Night and Day” by Cole Porter – hits the charts.Frank left Dorsey, but for a while he had no right to record in the studio. But he got his own show on the radio “Songs By Sinatra” and many offers to perform. On New Year’s Eve, he played the first part at a Benny Goodman concert at New York’s Paramount Theater. This was the last straw that overflowed the cup: Frank Sinatra, who so charmingly fused jazz, blues and swing, in the eyes of young people embodied the ideal image of a real pop idol, which has yet to cause incredible excitement for many decades.The companies that owned the rights to his early recordings were releasing Sinatra records in packs. In 1943, the artist became a permanent member of the popular radio cycle “Your Hit Parade”, for four months he sang in productions on Broadway, and hosted his own program “Songs by Sinatra” on the radio. At the same time, his full-fledged film career starts. In the film “Reveille With Beverly” he sings the song “Night and Day”, and in the film “Higher and Higher” he gets a small role – he plays himself. He was able to show his acting skills in full in the 1944 film “Step Lively”.
The taboo on audio recordings that were in effect during the Second World War somewhat slowed down Sinatra’s singing career, but in November 1944 the ban was lifted, and, already lured by the MGM label, the singer is happy to plunge into work. To the no less delight of the listeners, his songs continue to delight the ear and enjoy constant popularity. During 1945 alone, eight new singles crossed the border of the American Top 10. These were compositions by various authors, including themes from musicals: “If I Loved You”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, “Dream”, “Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night of the Week) ”and so on.
The artist is especially fond of the author’s tandem of Jules Styne and Sammy Cahn, who, at Sinatra’s insistence, are invited to work on his first musical “Anchors Aweigh”. Having broken with Columbia 12 years after the start of his solo career and having managed to rise to unimaginable heights of popularity during this time, Frank Sinatra is left with nothing: without a contract with a label or film company, without agreements with radio or TV channels. The concerts stopped, the agent left him.Moreover, in 1949, after his affair with the actress Ava Gardner (Ava Gardner) received scandalous publicity, he divorced Nancy. Sinatra, of course, had its own permanent audience, and quite a large one.And his talent was still hypnotic. 1965-66 – the time of another rise in popularity, the third peak in his half-century career. During these two years, the singer received the Grammy five times, which crowned two triumphant albums “September of My Years” and “A Man and His Music” (an overview of his creative career), as well as two singles: “It Was a Very Good Year” and “Strangers in the Night,” an immortal song classic, for Best Pop Vocal. Album “September of My Years”, a symbiosis of vocal jazz, traditional and contemporary pop music, famously topped the sales charts and reached platinum status.
No less stormy than creativity, his personal life proceeds. The 50-year-old artist is experiencing another heartfelt infatuation and in 66 he will marry actress Mia Farrow. A 30-year age difference is not the best soil for a happy marriage. They divorced a year later.

Stan Levy, one of the most prominent drummers of his generation, was born in 1926 in Philadelphia, where his father sold cars and organized fights. One of the rare drummers – not only because he was left-handed – he belongs to the small number of whites who stood at the origins of bebop, and in terms of his contribution to music, he is not inferior to Kenny Clarke and Max Roach. As soon as the failure appeared on the horizon, Stan defeated her with a left hook and continued to move forward.Art always needs talented and motivated people like Stan Levy.
As a teenager, Stan dropped out of school and started working cleaning his father’s cars, and also boxing semi-professionally, playing drums along the way. In the late 40s, he had a chance to try his hand at a boxing career. After strengthening his bebop position, Levy changed direction and in 1952 joined the Wall of Kenton Orchestra (City of Glass; Portraits of Standards), where he played more sophisticated jazz, “jazz for intellectuals.”Experiences from the big bands of Charlie Ventura, Georgie Auld, Freddie Slack and Woody Herman helped him perform with this orchestra from 1952-1954. After moving to California in 1954 with several bandmates at Stan Kenton, Levy pioneered the West Coast cool school, but his style, crisp and melodic, was more of bop than cool jazz. Few musicians have made the transition from New York bebop to West Coast cool jazz as easily as Stan Levy.Based on bop, his playing style has brought life to many of the bands he has played with. For example, the Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All Stars from Hermosa Beach.
One of Levy’s bandmates in the Howard Ramsay Orchestra recalled the collaboration: “I worked with him for three years at Lighthouse. Stan was a great person and musician. He came from the brutal world of boxing and street fights and came across as a huge teddy bear that shouldn’t have been pissed off or he’d have killed you. But, nevertheless, he was an excellent musician and empathetic person.I can confidently say that he is one of my favorite drummers. We both played at Wall of Kenton, but only at different times. All the musicians with whom he had to work with Kenton unanimously claim that Stan was the best drummer in the big band. ”
In the 1950s, Levy also recorded under his own name, from Stanley the Steamer (1954, Affinity) to the excellent Stan Levey Quintet (1957, VSOP).
Since joining the studio in 1958, Levy has become one of America’s most sought-after musicians.In addition to a large number of recordings on albums of famous artists and soundtracks for hundreds of films and television series, he was also a member of the orchestra under the direction of Skitch Henderson, who worked on the Tonight Show. In the early 60s, he continued to work as a studio musician, also performing with many top stars, including Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald. Levy’s play was clean and tidy, and he was particularly good at fast bop numbers.
In 1973, Stan Levy decides to end his musical career.His most recent work was as a composer and performer in five films for Disney, directed and produced by Philip Abbot. These were educational films no more than an hour long. Stopping playing, Stan was satisfied with what he had done during his career. Although Levy retired from the music business, critics often recalled his musical taste, dynamic playing and drumming ability.
Later, he will make another transition, changing his career as a gifted drummer to that of an inventive photographer, recognized by his peers and whose photographs can be found everywhere.Photography – an old hobby – became a job for him, where he again proved himself to be a master of his craft. When his successful photography career began, Levy was living in southern California. Every day I had to go to work by train, and Sten sometimes joked: “I’m still on the road (meaning musical tours).”

Sten passed away quietly on Tuesday April 19, 2005 at Valley Presbyterian Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was 79.
