Pavel Yablochkov is one of the founders of electrical engineering, the creator of the arc lamp and the world’s first electric transformer of alternating current.
Thanks to the inventions of the scientist in the 19th century, Russia was called the birthplace of electricity.
The Glavarchiv contains materials related to the activities of Pavel Yablochkov. Among them are documents on the lease by the inventor of the land between the Kitaygorodskaya wall and Chelyshev’s house for the construction of a power station.In return, the scientist was supposed to illuminate Theater Square and the future premises of the City Duma on Voskresenskaya Square for free.
Pavel Yablochkov was born on September 14 (September 2 according to the old style) 1847 in the family estate in the Saratov province. He received a good education at home, showed particular success in exact disciplines. In 1858 he entered the Saratov gymnasium. In 1862, the gifted teenager moved to St. Petersburg, where he studied for several months at the boarding house of the honored professor of fortification and composer Caesar Cui.
In 1863-1866 Pavel Yablochkov studied at the Nikolaev Engineering School, after which he received the title of Engineer-Second Lieutenant.
After serving a year in the engineer battalion of the engineering team in Kiev, he was sent to study at the Technical Electroplating Institution for officers in Kronstadt. But the future scientist was attracted not by military service, but by invention, so at the end of 1871 he resigned from the army and got a job in Moscow as an assistant to the head of the telegraph service. And in 1873 he was appointed head of the telegraph of the Moscow-Kursk railway.The young scientist devoted all his free time to experimental studies in the electrotechnical circle of the Polytechnic Museum.
In 1874, Pavel Yablochkov, for the first time in the history of electrical engineering, used electric lighting on the railway: he installed a searchlight with a Foucault incandescent arc lamp on a steam locomotive of the imperial family, which was heading to the Crimea. For 20 hours, the scientist manually adjusted the equipment and transferred it from one tractor to another. It took too much time and effort, so the young inventor thought about improving arc lamps.
In 1874-1875, Pavel Yablochkov opened an experimental electrical workshop with a shop in Moscow, where the most advanced research for that time was carried out. In the fall of 1875, the scientist went abroad and got a job in Paris at the firm of Louis Breguet, a physicist, inventor, watchmaker and entrepreneur. On March 23, 1876, Yablochkov’s invention under the name “Electric arc lamp” was officially registered in France. For the first time, the author showed the public his creation in London on April 15, 1876 at an exhibition of physical devices.
The success of the Yablochkov candle was tremendous: within a few months, lanterns with “Russian light” appeared in many cities around the world. The products were produced by the Breguet firm, but the author himself received very modest dividends. With the funds received from the patent, the scientist established the company “Partnership for Electric Lighting of P.N. Yablochkov – Inventor and Company ”and an electromechanical plant in St.
Petersburg.
In the 1880s Yablochkov lived and worked in Paris. There he researched alternators and transformers, studied the distribution of electric current in circuits, as well as its chemical sources.In 1881, the inventor participated in the first International Electrotechnical Exhibition and in the first International Congress of Electricians.
In 1893 Pavel Yablochkov returned to Russia. Until the last months of his life, he worked on a project for electric lighting in Saratov. In the same city, he died on March 31 (March 19, old style), 1894. On the monument erected on the grave of Yablochkov, his words are engraved: “Electricity will be supplied to houses like gas or water.”

Direct infection occurs during close contact with a sick animal, when they play with it, wash it, warm it under a shirt, let it go to bed, as well as through objects that have been infected with scales and wool. At home, infection is possible through bed linen, towels, clothing, hats, cleaning equipment, animal bedding.In the entrances of houses and courtyards – through the near-door rugs, dust of staircases, attics and basements, sand of children’s sandboxes, water from shallow reservoirs. Children with dry skin or minor injuries and abrasions are at risk. After all, the main function of the epidermis is protection. If it is violated, the likelihood of fungal scales entering the body increases.
Treatment of patients with microsporia seems to be an important, socially significant problem. This disease usually affects not only children, but also their parents.Due to the high contagiousness of mycosis, children are prohibited from attending kindergartens and schools. They skip school hours, find themselves separated from the children’s collective for a long time. Parents are forced to interrupt work and take sick leaves for care.
