Students in the photography summer camps work with a network of professional photographers, industry professionals, and their fellow classmates to obtain new ways of looking at the same image while learning a wide variety of technical and artistic approaches.

Shoot in Exciting Locales this Summer

From the first day of the camp, students will be behind the camera, learning the craft of photography through a combination of in-class instruction, faculty-supervised workshops, and individual course assignments. Over the course of the camp, students will become familiar with and learn how to shoot in the many genres of photography, including Fine Art Photography, Photojournalism, Commercial Photography, and much more.

The main goal of the camp is to train students to shoot and film images at a professional level. This means that students learn how to execute an assignment quickly and effectively, developing their own style of seeing and shooting the world that makes each image they take instantly recognizable as their own. To help them develop their own original voice, students study under our faculty of professional photographers who remain active in the field, shooting in the many different genres of photography.

4-Week Photography Camp for Teens

2021 Locations: New York City, Los Angeles

The 4-Week Photography Camp for Teens is an intensive exploration of photography in the digital age. Photography students are immersed in the art and craft of still photography, and are introduced to the tools necessary to capture great images and refine them through digital imaging.

Teen photography students at New York Film Academy’s summer camps develop the skills necessary to research, compose, and capture digital photographic projects in a hands-on educational environment. Students are encouraged to be creative, but are also taught to think of each project as a concise statement of artistic, documentary, journalistic, or commercial intent. They expand their repertoire of techniques with light and shadow as they work with professional lighting and grip hardware and also experiment with inexpensive and unconventional practical sources of light and shadow.

The camp is designed for students of all experience levels, beginning with the fundamentals and filling the inevitable gaps in the understanding of those who have some experience.

4-Week Teen Photography Camp: Classes

Students in the 4-Week Photography Camp for teens can expect to take the following classes.

• Shooting Lab: This lab is a hands-on opportunity for students to learn professional techniques on locations around New York City. It covers a wide range of genres and aesthetic, logistical, and technical challenges. The students work directly with the instructor to apply concepts to assignments of increasing complexity. Field trips to photograph the infinite variety of locations and subjects will play a major part of this course.

• Digital Imaging: Digital photography allows manipulation of images in ways that were never possible with film. The software Lightroom will be used to explore digital imaging and to create the best images possible. Class time will be spent shooting. Lab activities will include various technical demonstrations by the instructor followed by working on images using the techniques demonstrated. Assignments may include: color correction by the numbers, adding depth to images, creating panoramic images, converting RAW files and batch processing, night photography, light painting, and preparing a web portfolio.

• Vision and Style: This course is an introduction to major conceptual trends and ideas in photography. Students learn how to apply their technical skills to formulating their own unique style. This course teaches students critical thinking skills, the visual language of photography, and pushes them to explore their personal interests in photography as they conceptualize, execute, refine, and critique.

Students will define and develop a personal, iconic visual style, and specific area of interest, studying master bodies of work across both genres as examples. The primary focus will be on the still photography, but the use of the moving image will also be explored through class assignments. Students will gain a level of self-awareness necessary to understand the most salient origins for their ideas, and start to conceive how their work might fit into the context of current practices and attitudes.

• Photo I: This course is a combination of lectures, demonstrations, shooting assignments on location and in the studio, and critique.

Students obtain a working knowledge of cameras, lenses, modern DSLR cameras, and light. Students will become acquainted with principles of composition, color, and perception, all the while learning to utilize the camera as an image creation tool. We will discuss the distinctions between art and commerce. Students will conceptualize, shoot, edit, process, present, and discuss their work in class, which will derive from weekly assignments. The course culminates with a final body of finished photographs.

• Gallery Tour: Students go on weekly guided tours of current gallery and museum exhibitions of photo-based work and studio visits. Students will also learn the process of exhibiting photography and the working process of current artists.

All 4-Week Photography students are required to bring a digital camera with manual exposure control.

Tisch Summer High School Photography and Imaging Program

The Tisch Summer High School Program is on offer, in-person for summer 2022; however, we must remain flexible in our response to changing developments due to COVID-19. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our first priority. If we are unable to conduct the program on campus as planned, we will shift to remote instruction. Any changes to program format will be communicated promptly if and when they are confirmed.

Program Overview

Through the Summer High School Program in Photography and Imaging, you will focus on using photo-based image-making for storytelling, communication, creative expression, personal exploration, and digital output. The course will address contemporary photographic culture and emphasize the development of individual voices and vision through assignment prompts and self-directed projects and research.

Note: The Tisch Summer High School Program is not a leisure camp. While the average program runs daily, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm, including academic classes, professional training, and/or studio and production time, students will often be just as busy in the evenings and weekends which also include curricular events and opportunities to work individually or collaborate with peers on assigned projects.

What is Photo Camp’s Summer Camp Program?

Photo Camp’s Summer Camp Programs are five-day courses that inspire teens to learn the basic elements of photography in an experience-based environment with close 1:1 instruction from a professional photographer.  During the course, students will learn how to use their camera’s manual settings and how to create impactful images and tell stories through their camera lens.  These courses allow students to photograph in real-life situations and practice their learned skills in natural and studio environments in order to become better photographers.  

How is the Summer Program conducted?

 Photo Camp takes a unique approach to photography instruction by moving the classroom out into the real world and learning through practice.  Students simultaneously practice using the tools their camera provides to create beautiful and interesting photographs while practicing various theories and concepts of photography to tell their story.  Students also receive inspiration through new experiences outdoors, in the studio, and by observing the world around them.  

Throughout the course, students will receive close instruction, constructive feedback as well as have the chance to collaborate with fellow students and professional photographers. The goal in all of these aspects of Photo Camp is to improve their skills and artistic vision while having a great time!  Students are encouraged to get creative, learn and practice new photographic styles to refine their artistic voice. Photo Camp uniquely fosters all of these elements through fun and exciting activities developed by experienced teachers for this program. 

SAFETY INFORMATION DURING COVID-19 (Please read carefully)

During this uncertain time, it is very important to us to keep everyone safe and healthy. We have implemented strict guidelines in order to keep all of our attendees safe while getting a chance to be outside and explore while learning about photography,

All of our programs will be conducted fully outside with social distancing being part of the structure of the camp. We will also be requiring students to attend camp wearing a face mask at all times. Photo Camp is considered a low-risk program as our group sizes are less than 12 individuals and each week will be strictly limited to less than 12 students.

Families can rest assured that their children will be taken care of and remain safe during camp. It is important to all of our community to be in this together and to keep everyone safe and healthy!

HOURS & LOCATION:

Monday to Friday – 9 AM to 3 PM

Location: Each day we will venture to a new location for a different lesson in photography. Some of the features of this program are Land’s End, Palace of Fine Arts, Chinatown and many other photographic gems.

Drop off & Pick up – There will be a meeting place designated each day based on the location we are visiting for the day!

 What is included with the course?

– Five days of instruction and informative photography experiences throughout the Bay Area.

– Daily feedback and 1:1 help for individual students via Zoom in the evenings.

ABOUT THE ONE WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM

The one week residency Photography Workshop will be an intensive exploration of the many facets that make up photography in the 21^st century. We will cover all main areas of the medium with one-two day intensive lessons. We will begin in the studio covering the workflow of lighting both still life and portraits. Then we will move into our state of the art digital labs where we will learn how to harness the full power of Photoshop and make large prints from the prior two days in the studio. Finally, we will spend two days in the darkroom exploring the alchemy that make traditional photography such a magical process.  We will also be going on a field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to visit their Prints and Photographs collections where you will see first-hand, prints made by the masters of the medium.  Finally, the workshop will culminate with an exhibition of the work produced by the students that parents and the public will be invited to attend to view.

We will travel to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to visit their Prints and Photographs collections where you will see first-hand, prints made by the masters of the medium. We will also visit a photographer’s studio who shoots for Philadelphia Magazine and is an alumnus of the program.

About the Photography Program
The Drexel University Photography program teaches students how to develop a unique photographic vision using a combination of aesthetics and technology. Using both applied and theoretical teaching methods and blending traditional processes with current digital technologies, the photography curriculum provides aspiring photographers with the breadth of experience and knowledge required to succeed in today’s marketplace. The photography foundation courses are the same for each student until their third year, at which point they design a custom path of study that culminates in their senior thesis portfolio. Our alumni’s achievements reflect the diversity built into our program. They own successful photography studios, teach in high school and college programs, serve as curators, work as magazine photo editors and operate their own digital illustration firms.

General Information 

Eligibility:  We welcome high school students who are at least 16 years of age who have completed their sophomore or junior year by July, prior to the start of the program. We encourage anyone who is excited about design to apply and we limit each program to 12 students.

Faculty:  Students will be taught by Drexel faculty from the Department of Photography in the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. The faculty will be assisted by teaching assistants all of whom will spend one-on-one time with every student.

Housing & Meals: Students will live together in a Drexel Residence Hall. We are located in University City, adjacent to Center City Philadelphia and many cultural sites. We have around-the-clock supervision resident assistants who reside with the students in the residence hall, and faculty supervision during the day.  Meals will be provided through Drexel Dining Services and other meal providers during fields trips.

What will you bring home with you: Students who successfully complete the one-week program will receive a program certificate from Drexel University’s Photography Department. You will also take away the foundation of a diverse student portfolio with original prints and digital files along with a lot of career insights and happy memories, too.

Teen Academy | International Center of Photography

Since 2001, ICP’s Teen Academy program has supported thousands of New York City high school students in using cameras as tools to tell their own stories, build community, and contribute to social change. And now, through a range of online classes, we welcome students from across the country and around the world! The program is designed to cultivate visual literacy, personal vision, and leadership skills through both seasonal and yearlong classes focused on the past, present, and future techniques involved in imagemaking and visual culture.

Teen Academy offers quarterly classes for every level. Photo I in Digital is geared for beginner-level students seeking an introduction to the principles of digital photography including camera use, composition, and editing. After learning the basics, students can further their visual storytelling skills in a Photo II in Digital course, which range in theme from portraiture to journalism and provide an opportunity for students to refine their technical and conceptual skills. 

All curricula is youth-centered and includes: photographic and writing assignments, digital darkroom time, visual presentations, discussions, critiques, a field trip, a guest artist visit, and a culminating presentation for family and friends celebrating the students’ achievements.

Teen Academy Imagemakers enables motivated high school juniors and seniors to advance their digital photography, writing, and public speaking skills while developing an awareness of the creative and professional possibilities in the field. This weekly after-school program provides teen photographers with guidance from renowned teaching artists, virtual visits to museums, galleries, and studios, college-prep workshops, pre-professional assignments, mentorship opportunities, and a unique community of their peers. This program is designed for students who are passionate about photography and visual culture as mediums of empowerment and social change. By the end of the year, students will create an extensive portfolio, including an artist’s statement and CV. A selection of their best work is featured in a culminating showcase on ICP’s website. 

Teen Academy is committed to making photography education accessible to all young people, regardless of their economic resources. Need-based scholarships are available to teens before the start of each term.

If you would like to be considered for a scholarship in an upcoming class, please complete an application. Scholarship applications are reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis. Upon submission, please allow two to three weeks to hear back regarding your application status.

In effort to ensure the safety of all students, families and Youth in Focus staff, and in accordance with Safe Start Washington protocols the following measures have been implemented for Youth in Focus Summer Camps. 

Safety Highlights

• Camp size is limited to ensure social distancing for all camp activities (including drop-off and pick-up)

• All participants and staff will have their temperature checked prior to gaining access to Youth in Focus facilities

• All participants and staff will be required to wear face masks or coverings at all times

• All workstations, equipment and common areas will be sanitized multiple times a day

• Youth in Focus will provide appropriate cleaning and sanitation supplies along with PPE to all participants and staff Payment

Full payment is due at the time of registration.

Cancellations

Requests for withdrawal/cancellation from camp must be made at least two weeks prior to the camp start date for a full refund, less a $50 processing fee. Call (206) 723 1479 to cancel a camp session. Campers enrolled in a camp cancelled by Youth in Focus will receive a full refund.

COVID-19 Cancellations

To ensure the safety of all campers and staff, we have modified our cancellation policy as relates to COVID-19. If any camper is experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms, please do not come to camp. If any camper has been in contact with anyone in the 14 days prior to camp who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, please do not come to camp. To cancel your registration and receive a refund, please email Benji Anderson at [email protected] or call 206-723-1479.

Age Requirements

Classes are designed for the ages listed and are based on the age the camper will be at the beginning of the Fall 2020 school year.

Food and Lunches

Youth in Focus will provide each camper with a light snack and water each morning and afternoon.

Time is allotted for lunch on full-day camps. Campers are responsible for their own lunches. We highly recommend campers bring a lunch as there are limited food vendors in the area. All lunches will be consumed outside with proper social distancing between campers.

The photo session takes place outdoors in the most picturesque places in the camp, weather permitting, and in the interiors of the Euroclub.Shooting takes about 1 hour. A few days after the end of the session, we will send you by e-mail a portfolio of at least 20 successful photos in high resolution, the best photos in professional processing.

Girls will especially love the process of getting ready for the shoot: a child’s stylist can apply a light make-up to the models, which will most successfully highlight the child’s face during the shooting, and give the girls adorable hairstyles. Young models will feel like real stars!

90,000 MAMM and SR – Education – Summer School of Photography for Teenagers (online)

Summer daily photography workshop for adolescents from the Rodchenko School is a combination of an educational program with simple independent practice to consolidate the knowledge gained.Short effective lectures, creative assignments, project work and discussion of filming with teachers.

For 10 lessons, students will study various genres of modern photography, receive basic knowledge of composition, camera device and technical features of filming, as well as master the initial level of image processing in the graphics editor Adobe Photoshop.

Based on the results of training, each of the students will be able to shoot and present a personal creative project.

What will be in the workshop program?

Classes include an engaging introductory lecture, concrete practical advice performed in real time by students, homework to reinforce the material, and discussion of the survey results with teachers.For inspiration, the guys will regularly receive a list with examples of works by contemporary photographers in various genres and a list of useful links on the material covered.

During the course of the workshop program, students will study the laws of photocomposition, features of photography in different genres (portrait, still life, subject photography, interior photography, architecture, landscape), understand the camera device and basic shooting modes, master the initial level of image processing and create their first personal creative photo projects.

Who is this workshop for?

The program is designed for adolescents 12-16 years old who are interested in photography and would like to expand their knowledge in practice.

Conditions of participation

The course is aimed at children from 12 to 16 years old. Any camera or smartphone, laptop or computer with Adobe Photoshop installed.

Course Features

Classes are held through the ZOOM online conference platform, every day on weekdays for two weeks.After each new lecture, students receive homework to consolidate their knowledge.

Acquaintance. Basic concepts of exposure: shutter speed, aperture, ISO.

Camera structure and basic shooting modes.

2nd lesson

Composition in photography. Lecture.

We implement small formal projects on the topics: perspective and perspective, versatility.

Assignment: formal product photography on a white background. Choose one small object and shoot it at different angles and scales on a sheet of white paper with light from a window

Assignment to choose from: collect a series of photographs from material on Google maps and panoramas. Collect a series from personal or found archival photographs

Basics of image processing in Adobe Photoshop: interface, hotkeys, color correction and retouching tools.Practice of working in a graphics editor on the example of material from past filming.

Assignment: formulate questions for further study of the program

8 class

Contemporary still life.

Viewing works of famous photographers in the genre of modern still life.

Work with additional light sources (table lamp, flashlights).

ROSPHOTO Thematic summer camp for children “The Art of Photography”

This summer, on the basis of ROSPHOTO, together with the center for modern technologies in art “Art-ParkING”, a cultural and educational program for children from 10 to 15 years old “The Art of Photography” will be organized – a thematic camp with a 5-day intensive course on the theory and practice of photography.

In the classroom, children will be able to immerse themselves in a creative environment: they will receive basic knowledge of the history of art and photography, learn about the intricacies of photography and try their hand “in the field”, learn to pose.

Children will enjoy excursions, master classes (including painting and animation), game quests, historical walks and three meals a day.

The training program for the basics of photography includes: color and black-and-white photography; shooting with and without flash; abstract images; landscape and portrait series.

Along the way, children will study cameras, lenses and their device, try out methods of processing photographs.

Armed with a camera, the guys will go on a photo hunt in historical St. Petersburg, because the location of the ROSPHOTO center allows you to instantly be at the main cultural treasures – St. Isaac’s Cathedral or the Hermitage.

Every Friday at 17:30 at the final creative evening, parents and everyone are invited to look at the resulting pictures.

The project is part of the “Art Empire” program of the Center for Contemporary Technologies in Art “Art-ParkING”, which takes place on the basis of theaters, museums, palaces and concert halls during the summer school holidays.
