Midtown Description
High 5 Tickets To the Arts is located in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan.
Midtown West
From the hustle of the Port Authority Bus Terminal to the bustle of Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street, much of New York’s dazzling vibrancy and energy emanates from this area stretching from Times Square to Central Park South. Packed with theaters, tourist attractions and tall office buildings, the buzz and glow of the city are most obvious amid the huge neon signs, giant wraparound news tickers (ABC News has a studio location here) and Broadway marquees. After braving the crowds of pop-obsessed teeny boppers gathered around MTV Studios visit the Hershey’s Time Square Store to satisfy your sweet tooth. Or grab a bite to eat at typical tourist meccas like TGI Friday’s or the Dave & Buster’s.
A stroll up Broadway, whether in the early morning or late at night, passes by some of America’s most cherished institutions, and the number of glowing lights are rivaled only by the Las Vegas Strip. Little wonder that Mondrian’s inspiration for “Broadway Boogie-Woogie” came from this amazing array of places and colors; some of the facades literally scream out at the visitor as though ready to burst out from the grid of Midtown’s streets and fly into orbit!
If you need a respite from the sensory overstimulation of Times Square, visit the New York Public Library. The majestic Beaux-Arts building, flanked by the two famous marble lions, Patience and Fortitude, has been the heart and soul of the New York library system for nearly a century. It’s great for a little peace and quiet, and of course a great read. The library is to adjacent Bryant Park, which is a lovely patch of green in the middle of skyscraper territory. Among the amenities available to visitors are a French-style carousel, a boule board, chess tables, free summer movie screening, over 25,000 varieties of flowers, the Bryant Park Grill, and free wireless access, as well as 2,000 moveable chairs.
Midtown West is also home to Radio City Music Hall (home to world-famous dancers, the Rockettes), Museum of Television and Radio, Museum of Modern Art, Carnegie Hall and the newly renovated Museum of Arts & Design. These extraordinary cultural institutions play host year-round to natives and tourists alike, so catch an eye-catching exhibit or enjoy a symphony and bask in some of New York’s greatest artistic offerings.
There’s also no shortage of restaurants in the area. For some excellent French fare try La Bergamote, which is known for its vast menu, with nearly 30 types of luxurious French pastries, six sorts of croissants, over a dozen types of breads as well as diverse handmade chocolates. For dinner try Aquavit, the country’s preeminent Scandinavian restaurant. There really are too many dining options to list, but click here to check out entire listings of restaurant in the Midtown area.
If you’re looking to spend your stay in New York right in the heart of Midtown, there are plenty of hotel options. The DoubleTree by Hilton is located right in Times Square, as is the sophisticated Park Central New York. And for the more budget conscious traveler there’s the Comfort Inn Midtown and the Portland Square Hotel.
Midtown East
Midtown East stretches from 42nd Street north to 59th, and East of Fifth Avenue to the East River. The area is populated with some of New York’s most iconic landmarks. While walking along 42nd Street and Park Avenue a visit to Grand Central Station is certainly in order, for Grand Central is one of the most stunning railroad stations in America. Walk in to admire its stunning brass clock, the exquisite staircases, and the unique celestial ceiling, its light bluish-green background filled with well-known constellations dotted with tiny lights. Restored in recent years, the cavernous main hall is bathed in natural light during the day, and pulsates with activity at night, thanks not least to its three busy restaurants: Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse, Metrazur, and the famous Oyster Bar. Another superb restaurant in the area includes the Benjamin Steakhouse, housed inside the ornate 1903 Beaux-Arts Dylan Hotel. There’s also Sparks Steak House which is known for not only its massive steaks, but its massive wine list as well.
The gorgeous Chrysler Building (which turned 75 in 2005) is also nearby. In the bright sunlight, the upper floors gleam, reflect, and even seem to pulsate light, directing the eye upwards towards the spire. Its gorgeous Art Deco lobby, with murals celebrating transportation themes, is definitely one of New York’s finest. Examine the ornamental details, the typical Deco motifs, the lush marble, and the charming light fixtures, all restored in recent years. You’ll also definitely want to visit Rockefeller Center. The plaza, adorned with Paul Manship’s massive golden 1934 statue of Prometheus contains the world-famous ice skating rink and of course is home to the giant Christmas tree every December, making it a must-see holiday destination. While you’re in the neighborhood take a tour of the United Nations and get a behind-the scenes look at the diplomacy in action at the global meeting place of the General Assembly and Security Council.
Midtown East is also home to some of the world’s most well known department stores, including Lord & Taylor, Bergdorf Goodman and of course the original Saks Fifth Avenue. All those retailers have an extraordinary selection of upscale goods and are considered classic, can’t-go-wrong stops for any shopaholic. So take your time strolling through this quintessential region of Manhattan – explore those famous landmarks, have a stop for lunch, and then proceed to do a little upscale shopping.
Midtown East is an ideal neighborhood to spend your stay in New York, as the area is full of attractions and iconic landmarks. The beautiful, Art Deco styled Roosevelt Hotel is just four blocks from the Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall and within walking distance of Times Square and Museum of Modern Art. There’s also the Grand Hyatt, which is located right near the United Nations and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The spacious and elegant Dylan Hotel, as well as the W New York – The Tuscany are other exceptional options. Click here for a complete list of hotels in close proximity to Midtown East.

Join us for the debut of High Five – 5 hours of $5 drinks and $5 small plates featuring live band performance by our newest resident musicians SweetPlot. The small bites are also the debut of our SOMA Garden Kitchen, opening for full service in 2022.
Live performance by:
SweetPlot (@sweetplotmusic)
Formed by musicians from multiple bands in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2014, Sweet Plot quickly arrived on stages across California and beyond. With their unique blend of funk, rock, soul and world music, Sweet Plot cooks up a phonic stew which never fails to energize a dance floor. Blazing guitar, jumping polyrhythms, screaming horns and powerful vocals all punctuate a vintage sound reminiscent of the rock and funk of the 1970s, but with a not so subtle modern polish. Since 2016 the group has released four studio albums of original material with a fifth on its way in 2022. Keep an eye out for new music as the group gears up to hit the road again and release a string of new singles, starting with “Molly Molly” on 11/10 and a brand new Xmas song to follow just in time for the holidays.
Chakra art exhibit by:
David Choong Lee (@davidchoonglee)
David Choong Lee combines elements of graffiti, collage, graphic design, portraiture, and classical realism. He was born in Seoul, Korea in 1966 and moved to the US in 1993 to pursue traditional fine art at the Academy of Art. His first major body of work depicted San Francisco’s homeless in the Tenderloin, then evolved to depict the diversity of San Francisco’s population. Many of the city’s recognizable characters have shown up in breathtaking pieces on his signature wine and cigar boxes. In recent years, Lee has begun to shift focus from the figure to the abstract and geometric. These two styles come together in impressive assemblages that have shown in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Tucson, Canada, and Korea. Though he has been in countless group exhibitions with Mirus Gallery over the years, this will be the debut of his first solo exhibition many years in the making!
Interactive art video installation by:
Alex Huxley (@alechuxley)
Alec Huxley is a painter based in San Francisco. His work, primarily representational, is filled with contrast. Simultaneously stark and colorful, it focuses on landscapes of the American West Coast. Cinematic scenes serve as imperfect records of place, time and architecture for space travelers and wild animals. A self taught artist, his background includes studies in business, graphic design, photography, as well as a career in printing before committing to fine art full-time.

90,000 Dynamo, high five! – Hockey club “Dynamo” Moscow
Dynamo returned to Moscow in an excellent mood, having snatched a victory in Nizhny Novgorod and for the first time this season scored four victories in a row.
The victorious mood of the Muscovites was also noticed in the KHL, having included two Dynamo players at once in the list of the best players of the past week. Alexander Eremenko with two “crackers” was recognized as the best goalkeeper, in Vadim Shipachev, gaining points in four matches in a row – 7 (2 + 5).
SHIPACHEV BROKEN A DOUBLE
The Dynamo leader confirmed his status already in the first period and the match with Amur. Although in the opening, the guests unexpectedly turned out to be more frisky and even created several dangerous moments at the owners’ gates.
However, if in desire the Far East were superior to the blue and white, then the superiority in skill was on the side of the latter. And in the ninth minute, after the hosts’ striking link was properly warmed up, the score was opened.
Shipachev in this episode calmly settled down near the post of Murygin’s goal. And, waiting for a pass from Dmitry Kagarlitsky, he ferried her to an empty corner. Surprisingly, at the same time, there was not a single player of “Cupid” around about five meters! Apparently, in Khabarovsk they are not aware that Vadim is one of the most productive players in the KHL.
Even before the break, Shipachev could and even should have increased the score. Again, after Kagarlitskiy’s excellent pass, Dynamo’s top scorer sent the puck between Murygin’s legs to the touch. But the puck, already behind the goalkeeper’s back, did not enter the goal.
MOSER SANCED OUT ON THE HEAD
Dynamo started the second period more powerful and already in the 22nd minute forced the opponents to foul. But it didn’t come to the game “5 on 4”. With the delayed sending-off, when the hosts replaced the goalkeeper with the sixth field player, Andrei Mironov charged powerfully from the blue line.Murygin hit the puck in front of him. And at the same time, Muscovites forward Yevgeny Moser found himself on the spot again in splendid isolation, who took the puck, turned around and sent it into the net already past the goalkeeper.
The idea is that at this moment the Muscovites had to squeeze the “Cupid”, which looked clearly weaker. But the blue and white instead allowed the opponent to level the game and paid for it in the 37th minute – the guests reduced the lead after a rather spectacular combination, which was completed by Tomasz Zogorna.
This goal gave the guests hope. And “Cupid” grabbed this chance. Having received the majority after the removal of Dmitry Vishnevsky, the Khabarovsk team again played a good combination, in which the first throw was stopped by the bar, but after finishing off the puck into the Dynamo goal, it still flew!
HIETANEN’S WINNING PUCK
Considering that after the second period the guests had a total advantage in shots on target – 30-19, the picture came out for Muscovites completely unhappy. The guests were clearly in the mood for the match better. And by the end of the meeting, their attitude began to bear fruit! The situation had to be urgently corrected.
This could have been done by Dynamo’s striking link. Kagarlitskiy, having received the puck in his zone, worked great with his feet, ran away from two rivals and brought Alekseev one on one with the goalkeeper. But Andrey again lost the duel to the Amur goalkeeper.
Seven minutes before the siren, Alekseev again threw from the patch. And again Murygin was on top!
As a result, the match went into overtime. And in him everything was again decided by a higher skill.Shipachev and Kagarlitsky, having spent their shift, stayed on the ice. We waited in a foreign zone for the fresh Yuusi Hietanen. And they laid out the puck for him to shoot!
3: 2. Albeit in overtime, but for Dynamo this is the fifth victory in a row. And already the sixth place in the table of the West.

Vladimir Krikunov, head coach of Dynamo (Moscow)
– Today we were “out of our voice”. There were too many deletions in the first period. Obviously, psychologically, they were not ready for a serious fight. We probably thought that, like in Nizhny Novgorod, everything would turn out easily. And then the first goal was scored. When I saw him, I thought so: probably it will be very difficult for us today! The concentration needed to play well was not there. It’s good that we still took two points and we are slowly moving forward. Let’s hope that we will continue to win in the future.
– An unsuccessful power play against Cupid is also a lack of concentration or …
– This is exactly what. In the third period, it seems, already gathered. But, if from the very beginning you do not play normally, then it is very difficult to achieve the result.
– Will Andrey Alekseev be able to become a stable sniper? In Nizhny, he made a winning double. And now I had even more moments. And nothing.
– Will. If he plays as in Nizhny, and not as today.
– Is Zakrisson going to return to service?
– He may be going. But we need to get together. It’s too early for him to return.
Nikolay Borshchevsky, head coach of Amur (Khabarovsk)
– We knew that a very serious opponent was waiting for us in Moscow and we prepared accordingly. The game was not easy. They conceded 0: 2, but did not lay down their hands, they continued to impose their game. And the score was leveled. We played well in the majority, scored one goal. But more could have been. I write down the point I earned in the match against Dynamo as an asset to my guys. For the fact that they showed character in the fight against a strong enemy.
– Today your new goalkeeper Marek Langhamer has finally appeared in the application for the match, with whom you announced the signing of a contract two weeks ago. Why have you waited so long? And why do you need it at all? After all, Alexey Murygin plays very confidently.
– Langhamer, while still in the Czech Republic, missed several matches. So they let him get ready. And now we are introducing it into the composition. We also have Evgeny Alikin. Three good goalkeepers. Before each meeting, we will think about which of them to play.
– Will veterans Maxim Kondratyev and Vitaly Atyushov be back in action soon?
– I would like to! Kondratyev has a serious injury. We did not take him on the trip. He studies in Khabarovsk on an individual program. And Atyushov with the team.

High five: Angi SHVEDIANI | Polytech media
Modern samurai – this is how you can describe the new hero of the special project “High five”. The owner of the first dan in chanbar (this is a sport that appeared in Japan on the basis of a samurai duel), he is used to improving not only his body, but also his mind. The young teacher’s treasury includes grants from the President and the Government of Russia, grants from the Russian Science Foundation and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, European Neighborhood Instrument Cross Border Cooperation (ENI CBC), many scholarships and successfully implemented commercial projects. Meet Angi SKHVEDIANI – assistant of the Higher Engineering and Economic School of the Polytechnic University, young scientist of the year SPbPU (2020).
You will learn from the interview about the non-standard approach in education and your student years, the way to the Polytechnic Institute and the need to be a “why”, chanbara and climbing mountains. And at the end you will find a selection of the best films about the economy!
The funniest story from my work as a teacher
More recently, an international program in English was opened at the Higher School of Engineering and Economics, where I am teaching. This was the first enrollment for Quantitative Finance. To create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere for couples, we started by listening to AC-DC’s song “Highway to hell” and ended with Survivor “Eye Of The Tiger”. The main message was that you can master any discipline if you find the right approach to teaching. By the way, pairs on “Analysis and Forecasting of Financial Markets Volatility” were held in the same format from 14:00 to 19:30 without a break! This helped a lot to defuse the situation.
What do the students don’t know about you?
I have been doing chanbara for 16 years. Two years ago I took 3rd place at the European Championship in the tanto (knife) nomination. In this sport, you can choose any type of pneumatic weapon: short or long sword, knife, spear or pole. The main thing is a guarantee of safety, because this is an imitation of weapons and it is impossible to injure them. My first dan in chanbar: in Russia it is an analogue of a master of sports.
I also like board games. When the opportunity arises, my friends and I pass the time playing Ticket to Ride. Each participant needs to build a route, for example from Barcelona to St. Petersburg, and each player, without showing a card, must reach this goal. The game comes in at any party, although it takes two hours, but it is very reckless. I advise!
Another hobby of mine is mountain climbing. This summer I climbed for the first time to the summit of Kabardino-Balkaria – Mount Cheget and the Pastukhov Rocks (4800 m) of Mount Elbrus. The journey lasted seven days. Each time we climbed higher and higher, to the point of exhaustion, so that, having reached the goal, we would feel at the top of the world.During the trip, we also climbed to the upper reaches of the Baksan gorge, located on the left tributary of the Garabashi river – Chyranbashi-su, where at an altitude of about 2800 meters above sea level there is a waterfall Devichi spit. It was there that the film “Vertical” was filmed with Vladimir Vysotsky. Exhausted, we made a halt at the waterfall, and then climbed to the final point – the observatory. Just a divine view opened up before us: a picturesque sunset and mountains of unprecedented beauty. The plans are to conquer the peaks of the Altai Territory!
What kind of student were you?
Versatile, diligent and responsible.I studied at the Pavlov Medical Lyceum No. 623, but at the same time I studied physics in order to enter the Polytech later. Parents also studied at the Polytechnic, by the way, they met in a hostel. Dad designed parts for walking excavators, and then took up household chemicals. He even was a member of the trade union committee of the university and was responsible for the order and organization of work in the hostel. Initially, I wanted to become a programmer, but sitting at the computer all day did not appeal to me. So naive (Laughs) . Nevertheless, fate turned out so that I graduated from the bachelor’s degree at the Higher School of Economics, and my master’s and postgraduate studies are already here, at the Polytechnic. From the very beginning, I liked the research work on assessing the effectiveness of the public sector, and even then an interest arose in research activities under the supervision of my scientific advisor Tatyana Yurievna Kudryavtseva. This year I successfully defended my Ph.D. thesis in the specialty 08.00.13 “Mathematical and instrumental methods of economics”.
What is the most pleasant and most difficult thing in teaching?
Communication with students. There are so many of them and they are all different.Surprise me every time! I am pleased that graduate students are already consciously approaching the study of disciplines. It’s nice to see their dynamics from the 1st year to the last. Watching how they develop, how they learn to solve non-trivial problems using knowledge from different disciplines – this gives me strength.
I also enjoy community design work. Now I am a member of the Council of Young Scientists of SPbPU, which was created last year. Also at the Higher School of Engineering and Economics last year, we successfully implemented a project within 5-100-2020.We had 12 scientific groups that wrote and published more than 40 articles in leading international publications in a year, such as “International Journal of Technology”, “Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity”, “Sustainability”, “Risks “,” Ecology and Industry of Russia “.
I am sure that science is a constant search for an answer to the question “why?” And if you want to develop in your professional activity, you have to be a kind of “why” and look for answers to questions – this is the key to success both personally and in work.If we talk about unpleasant moments, then communication requires a lot of energy, and it upsets me when I spend it and do not get the return from students. If this happens, then I feel devastated: it’s hard to pull myself together and go to the next pair.
A question from students: why go to teaching?
For me, teaching is not only self-development, but also a way to change something in this world. After all, this can be done by different methods, including through training. I hope that my students will not only gain knowledge, but also be able to develop professionally and make real changes in the world in which we live.I am sure it will be so!
