- Objectives: Refine tactical approach, solidify team chemistry, and identify the strongest possible squad for the World Cup
U-17 Men’s National Team

- 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup (Peru, October 2019)
- Objectives: Qualify for the U-17 World Cup, continue player development, and build a competitive squad for international competition
U-19 Men’s National Team
While the U-19s do not have a specific FIFA tournament to prepare for, their role in the U.S. Soccer development pathway remains crucial. The team serves as a bridge between the U-17 and U-20 age groups, providing additional opportunities for player identification and development.
- Key Objectives:
- Identify and develop talent for future U-20 cycles
- Provide international exposure and experience for emerging players

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
As the U.S. youth national teams embark on their 2019 campaigns, they face a mix of challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of American soccer. The joint training camp in Florida represents just the beginning of a crucial developmental period for these young players.
Competitive Landscape
The global nature of youth soccer presents both obstacles and chances for growth. U.S. teams will face stiff competition from traditional powerhouses and emerging soccer nations alike, requiring adaptability, tactical acumen, and mental toughness to succeed.
Player Development Continuity
Maintaining consistent development pathways for players as they progress through age groups is essential. The coordination between the U-17, U-19, and U-20 programs plays a vital role in ensuring that talented individuals receive the support and opportunities needed to reach their full potential.
Balancing Club and Country
With players spread across domestic and international clubs, managing the relationship between national team commitments and club responsibilities becomes increasingly important. Open communication and cooperation between U.S. Soccer and various club teams will be crucial for player availability and continued development.
Tactical Evolution
As the global game continues to evolve, U.S. youth national teams must stay at the forefront of tactical innovations. The training camp and subsequent competitions provide opportunities to refine playing styles and strategies that can be carried forward to the senior national team level.
What long-term impact can success at the youth level have on the overall U.S. Soccer program? Strong performances in youth tournaments can boost confidence, provide valuable experience, and help identify future stars for the senior national team, contributing to the overall growth and competitiveness of American soccer on the world stage.
As the U.S. U-20, U-19, and U-17 Men’s National Teams gather in Florida to kick off their 2019 campaigns, the soccer community eagerly anticipates the emergence of new talents and the continued development of established prospects. The joint training camp serves as a microcosm of the broader U.S. Soccer youth development system, bringing together players from various backgrounds and pathways to compete, learn, and grow together. With important tournaments on the horizon and the ever-present goal of strengthening the senior national team player pool, the coming year promises to be both challenging and exciting for these young American soccer players.

Wolfenbarger Earns Spot on USA U19 World Cup Roster
Mario Bravante
July 19, 2021
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jersey Wolfenbarger is one of 12 players headed to Debrecen, Hungary for the FIBA U19 World Cup, USA Basketball announced today. Wolfenbarger, along with Amari DeBerry and Lauren Ware, were the final three athletes to earn their spots on the team, which will open training camp on Wednesday, July 21, at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. The team will be coached by Cori Close, Aaron Johnston and Joni Taylor. The selection committee, led by Jennifer Rizzotti, Tonya Cardoza, Kara Lawson and Wes Moore, put together the 12-member team.
“Let’s put this into perspective,” Arkansas Coach Mike Neighbors said. “Over half of NCAA freshmen were eligible for selection. 90 percent of incoming freshman from all 50 states were eligible for selection. And after a comprehensive tryout process, Jersey earned one of only 12 spots on the team that will represent the United States in the U19 World Cup. Let that sink in. We are all so proud of Jersey. It’s going to be fun following her and the team as they go for gold.”
The accolades continue to roll in for Wolfenbarger, who will debut for the Hogs this fall. Wolfenbarger was also named Arkansas’ first McDonald’s All-American signee since 2016, while garnering Arkansas player of the year honors from the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Max Preps and the Arkansas Basketball Coaches Association. Wolfenbarger, the number seven overall player and top ranked wing in ESPN’s HoopGurlz 2021 recruiting rankings, is one of six players set to start their freshman seasons this fall.
The awards are not hollow, though, as Wolfenbarger impacted winning during her illustrious high school career. She is coming off her second state title with Northside High School, as she led the Grizzlies to a 26-2 record and a Class 6A State Championship in 2020-21. She averaged 19.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.7 blocks per game during her final high school campaign.
Featuring U19 teams from 16 nations, the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup is scheduled to be held Aug. 7-19 in Debrecen, Hungary. In addition to the USA and host Hungary, teams that will take part in this summer’s U19 World Cup include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Italy, Japan, Mali, Russia, South Korea and Spain. FIBA held the draw to determine preliminary round groups for the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup on April 28, and the USA was drawn into Group A, alongside Australia, Egypt and Italy for the Aug. 7-10 preliminary round. The USA will open play against Italy on Aug. 7, followed by Australia on Aug. 8 and cap preliminary play against Egypt on Aug. 10. Times will be announced by FIBA at a later date.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — – The 2021 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team training camp will feature three court coaches to assist the USA U19 coaching staff and North Texas men’s basketball head coach Grant McCasland has been selected.
All three coaches — McCasland, Mike Boynton Jr. (Oklahoma State) and Pat Skerry (Towson) — will be participating with USA Basketball for the first time. Training camp to select the 12-member USA U19 World Cup Team will be held June 20-27 at TCU. The three court coaches will assist the USA U19 coaching staff, led by head coach Jamie Dixon (TCU) and assistant coaches Jerod Haase (Stanford University) and James Jones (Yale University), with on-court drills and scrimmages.
Twenty-six athletes have accepted invitations to attend the 2021 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team training camp. The athletes, age 19 years old or younger, will compete June 20-27 at TCU in hopes of being named to the 12-member team that will represent the USA at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup for Men.
McCasland concluded in 2020-21 his fourth season as head coach for the University of North Texas. In his four years at UNT, he has compiled an overall record of 79-51 (.608 winning percentage) and has led the Mean Green to its first NCAA tournament win in 2021, two Conference USA titles and the team’s highest national ranking ever.
Earning the program’s fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament and its first since 2010, North Texas in 2020-21 earned its highest-ever seeding in a NCAA Tournament (13) and its overtime victory over nationally ranked Purdue was its first AP Top 25 win since 1972. UNT earned the bid into the NCAA Tournament after grabbing the 2021 Conference USA Tournament championship. Finishing the 2019-20 season with a 20-11 record, McCasland became the first UNT coach since 1978 to begin his Mean Green coaching career with three straight 20-win seasons. Leading North Texas to the 2020 C-USA regular season title and the No. 1 seed for the 2020 C-USA Tournament, the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, he was named the 2020 Conference USA Coach of the Year.

Story Links
FORT WORTH, Texas – Kenneth Lofton, Jr. is trading in his Louisiana Tech red and blue for a different kind of red and blue this summer.

The team features six players who completed their first collegiate season and six players from the high school class of 2021.
“This week has been very fulfilling so far, and the process of selecting this 12-player group was really difficult given the amount of talent we have had at training camp,” said Jamie Dixon, Team USA head coach. “Everyone has been working hard, we are growing closer as a group, which is really important.
“I am excited about the team that the committee put together as we now prepare to head overseas to Latvia and compete for a gold medal.”
The Port Arthur, Texas native made the first round of cuts on June 21 as one of 17 finalists. The official team was selected following 10 training sessions held on the campus of Texas Christian University.
Lofton, Jr. becomes the first LA Tech men’s basketball player to earn ever a spot on the U19 World Cup Team and just the seventh from a current Conference USA school.
USA men’s teams have won seven gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal while compiling a 99-14 overall record in U19 World Cup play since the even launched in 1979. The USA has won four of the last six U19 golds since 2009.
The current team is scheduled to continue training on the TCU campus through June 28, then travel to Riga, Latvia for the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup that will be played July 3-11.

90,000 Ukrainian “Stars and Stripes” – football. ua
On the eve of the friendly match between the national teams of Ukraine and the United States, Football.ua recalls ethnic Ukrainians, natives and pupils of Ukrainian football, who in different years were called up under the banner of the national team of the United States of America.
Champions of the USA of Ukrainian origin
Before starting the review of Ukrainians in the US national team, let’s say a few words of background. As you know, several waves of Ukrainian emigration to the American shores washed thousands of immigrants from Ukraine.Among them were ethnic Ukrainians, Poles, Jews, as well as representatives of many other peoples. Many of them have preserved their traditions, among which there was a love of football. To European football, which is called soccer in the USA.
The history of soccer in the United States is quite long and florid. It begins in the 19th century, has decades of the amateur era and several ambitious projects of large professional leagues, one of which – the former NASL – became legendary, the other – MLS – successfully uses the experience of its predecessors today. There was also a huge Ukrainian era in the history of football in the United States. Suffice it to say that the Philadelphia Nationals became the winner of the ASL in 1958, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1968, 1970, and the US Open Cup (the national challenge cup is the oldest football competition in this country) conquered the Philadelphia Nationals (1960, 1961, 1963 , 1966) and New York Yukreiniens (1965). In addition to great victories in all-American tournaments, Ukrainian teams have also won tournaments in the states of New York and Illinois. And in 1967, the Philadelphia Ukrainians even represented the United States in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, losing only to the future trophy holder, the Alliance from El Salvador.
It is clear that the Ukrainian teams, which dominated American football from the late 50s to the early 70s, supplied players to the US national team as well. Moreover, these were not only ethnic Ukrainians, but also legionnaires from Argentina, Bermuda and many other countries who played for the teams of the Ukrainian diaspora. By the way, diaspora teams of other peoples – Germans, Poles, Hungarians, Italians – developed in a similar way. In numerous leagues in the United States, teams with eloquent names have played – White Eagles, Hansa, Maccabi and Hakoah, Roma, etc.e. The prosperity of diaspora football in the United States ended in the late 60s and early 70s, when the first commercial leagues appeared, and foreign legionnaires poured into this country one after another, among whom were unnamed players and stars of the scale of Pele, Beckenbauer , Cruyff, Best and many, many others.
Further, we will recall several names associated with Ukraine – natives of this land, ethnic Ukrainians, representatives of other peoples, who also played in the Diaspora Ukrainian teams in the United States.
Walter Bar – 19 matches (1 goal)
Born on April 1, 1927; Attacking Midfield
19 matches (1 goal) in 1948-57
Although Walter is of German-Jewish origin (according to some information, his ancestors emigrated to the United States from the territory of present-day Podillya), he is his own for the Ukrainian diaspora. Not so long ago, he even received the Walt Chizhovich Prize, which the foundation of his memory awards every year. And it is no coincidence that Bar is one of the most respected figures in American soccer.Yes, what’s there! He was even immortalized in the movies!
The fact is that Walter Bar – a player from the Philadelphia Nationals – was called up to the US national team, played 19 official matches and about the same number of unofficial matches in its composition. And in 1950 he was its leader at the World Cup, where the US team – “a team of dishwashers and salesmen” – beat the British, which became one of the main events of world football! Until now, the founders looked down on all these world championships, and at the very first start they lost to amateurs from the United States. And the decisive goal from Bar’s pass was scored by the same dishwasher Joe Gatiens.
Walter Bar played and coached Ukrainian diaspora teams, his sons Chris, Casey and Matt also played football. And in 2005 he was played in the movie The Game of Their Lives by Wes Bentley.
Adam Volyanin – 1 match
1919-1987; forward
1 match in 1950
More: Lviv at the World Championship
A native of Lviv, Pole Adam Volyanin, already at a young age, began to be actively involved in one of the most titled teams in Poland – Lviv Pogon. However, the career of the young striker was interrupted by the war. After the annexation of the western part of Ukraine to the Ukrainian SSR and the USSR, Volyanin ended up in Moscow Spartak, in which he managed to make his debut in 1941. But fate again ordered it in its own way, and Adam, in transit through England, where he tried his hand at Blackpool, moved overseas. In the United States, Volyanin played in many teams, but spent his best years at clubs in Chicago – Polish White Eagles and Felcons. It was from the White Eagles that he was drafted to the US national team, which went to the 1950 World Cup. On June 25, he made his debut in the national team in a match against the Spaniards (1: 3), but did not appear in official matches again. As part of his American teams, Volyanin played until he was 43 years old, was called up to the national teams (first and Olympic) for friendly matches. After completing his football career, he worked in public catering, died at the age of 67 in Park Ridge, Illinois.
Zenon Snilik – 4 matches
1933-2002; Attacking Midfield
4 matches 1957-61
A native of Rogatyn, he came to the United States in 1949, and a year later began playing for the Rochester Ukraine team.A great sports enthusiast, he played for our diaspora teams in Chicago, Montreal, New York, Newark. With Kulishenko and Eli he was the bronze medalist of the Pan American Games. In 1957, he made his debut in the first US national team in a match with the Mexicans, took the team onto the field with the captain’s team, and in 1961 played his last match for the national team – against the Colombians. He was a member of the US Olympic team three times. He also played tennis and other sports. He worked as a journalist. He was one of the most active and respected figures of our diaspora in this country.
Alex Eli – 4 matches
Born on February 9, 1938; Attacking Midfield
4 matches 1960-65
Another representative of other nations who successfully performed in Ukrainian teams. Alexandre Eli (Eli) was born in Brazil to a family of German immigrants from Ukraine. In the same place, in the state of Sao Paulo, he began to play football. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he went to the United States, where he began his studies at a local university. He played football – like an ethnic German, first in the team of the German diaspora, and then in the famous club of Philadelphia Ukrainians.Already at that time, 21-year-old Alex Eli was actively called up to the US national teams – he became the bronze medalist of the Pan American Games (together with the Ukrainians Snilik and Kulishenko), and in the selection for the Olympics, together with the US team, he could not do anything with the Mexicans. On November 13, 1960, the Philadelphia Nationals representative made his debut on the first US national team. In the World Cup 62 qualifying match, he again lost to the Mexicans with his national team. Until 1965, he played 4 matches for the US national team, but in the end he made the decision to return to his homeland.
Eli taught English in Brazil and began his writing career there. He worked on English textbooks, later became the author of several books of fiction, and after his football career he released his memoirs. Eli is an interesting person. I knew Pele, played for Ukrainian teams and learned to understand our language. Was inducted into the US Football Hall of Fame.
Andy Rach – 1 match
Forward
1 match in 1964
Andrey Rach played for the Philadelphia Nationals in 1957-64, having participated in the most significant matches of this team. This did not go unnoticed in the US team, which was going through another “reset”. Its new head coach, Johann Herberger, challenged him to a friendly against the British. Alas, that fight ended in fiasco – 0:10. This was the end of the international career of not one Racha, but a whole generation of American footballers. Meanwhile, Andy won the US Championship and the US Cup three times as part of the Philadelphians, and in 1960 he also received the MVP title of the American soccer league.
John Borodiak – 1 match
Born on April 22, 1940; defender
1 match in 1964
In the same match, Ivan Borodyak began and ended his international career. He was born in Argentina, managed to play there for Almagro and Talleres (50 matches in 1958-60). And at the age of 20 he moved to the USA, where he changed from Juan to John and joined the Philadelphia Nationals team. For six years in this team, he won the championship and the cup four times. Then he spent a season in the Ukrainian Sich team in Newark. Also played for the Philadelphia Spartans, Cleveland Stokers and Baltimore Bays. He left the big arena at the age of 29. And, unfortunately, he played only one match for the US national team – an ill-fated duel against the British. And try – make excuses, even if they were future world champions with Gordon Banks, Ron Flowers, Roger Hunt and Bobby Charlton in the lineup …
Mike Noga – 1 match
1938; forward
1 match in 1964
The fate of Miguel Noga is similar. He also hails from Argentina and started performing there (Defensores de Villa Maipu), then moved to North America and became Mike here. Since 1959, when Noga ended up in the United States, he became a star of the first magnitude. In the first season, he scored 22 goals, and ended the premiere season with an epic victory. In the US Open Cup final against Los Angeles Kickers, the Philadelphia Ukrainians won 5-2 and Mike Noga scored all five goals! At a time when there was a pause in the US championships, Noga actively helped the Ukrainian teams of Canada – Toronto Ukraine. Perhaps it would have been successful at the international level, but for the national team, his debut turned into an English failure – 0:10. After completing his career, he returned to Argentina, where he lives now, not without pride recalling his North American adventures.
Walter Chizhovich – 3 matches
1937-1994; forward
3 matches 1964-65
Walter (Vladimir) Chizhovich is the greatest Ukrainian football figure in the USA. A great striker who has played a big role in the best seasons of the Philadelphia Nationals, he gave this team more than ten years of his life. He also played for the Ukrainian Sich team from Newark, in the professional league he spent a season for the Philadelphia Spartans.
In 1964-65, Walt played three matches for the US national team – starting with a flop with England, he played two more games against Honduras.Alas, the US team did not qualify for World Cup 66 at that time . .. Nevertheless, Chizhovich continued his performances. While still a player, he began his coaching career. In 1975, he began working in the coaching department of the US Football Federation, for 4 years he was the coach of the national team. He worked fruitfully in the federation committees, was among those enthusiasts who actively participated in the preparation for the World Cup-94 and the organizing committees of the future MLS.
Alas, he died at the age of 57. His name was posthumously included in the US Football Hall of Fame, he was named among the most prominent figures in American sports. Now, the Walter Chizhovich Memorial Fund awards the best coaches in the United States every year. This award was received by Bruce Arena, Walter Bar, and also Walter’s brother – Eugene Chizhovich. A great coach who spent many years working with youth and, like his brother, who led the US national team.
Walt Shmotolokha – 1 match
1940; forward
1 match in 1965
Walter Shmotolokha played for the team of the Ukrainian Sports Club in New York, from there he was called up for a World Cup 66 qualification match against the Mexicans. He made his debut on March 7, 1965, scored a goal, but the United States did not beat an opponent – 2: 2. His team did not go to that world championship, but he won the US Open Cup with the New Yorkers, scoring one of the goals in the final match with the Chicago Hansa.
Nick Crat – 14 matches
Born on February 24, 1943; defender
14 matches 1968-72
Nikolai Krat started away from the big Philadelphia diaspora – at the age of 19 he got into the national team of the University of Michigan. He also played for the Ukrainian team Lions from Chicago. In 1967-1968 he played in “commercial” leagues, where at that time a galaxy of stars, led by Pele, performed. As part of the Chicago Spurs and the St. Louis Stars, he played against some of the greatest football players in the world. At that time, he rose to the first US team: on September 15, 1968, he made his debut in the Philadelphia friendly against Israel. The guests won, and the Sochi native Spiegler fired poker. Nevertheless, Krat became a strong player in the base of the national team, participated in the selection for the World Cup-70 and probably would have played more, but in the early 70s, the main US team gathered irregularly and played infrequently … At the age of 29, Nick played out in the Chicago Schwaben team, then he also played his last match under the Stars and Stripes – against the Mexicans at the legendary Azteca Stadium …
Orest Banach – 4 matches
Born on March 31, 1948; goalkeeper
4 matches 1969-72
Read more: Chicago “lion” at the gate
Orest Banakh is a successor of the famous football dynasty, his father played as a forward for Western Ukrainian teams before moving overseas.Orrie, although born in Germany, started playing in the USA. He was a young goalkeeper for the Chicago Lions, also played in Toronto, and played professionally for Boston Beacons, Baltimore Bays and St. Louis Stars. At the amateur level, he played until almost 40 years old. Banach made his debut in the US national team in April 1969, but his team lost to Haiti and did not make it to the World Cup 70. In the selection for the next world championship, the USA lost to the Canadians. The national team rarely met at that time, and during these crisis years Orest no longer played in its composition.
Andy Rymarchuk – 5 matches
1951-1997; forward
5 matches in 1973
Andrew (Andrey) Rymarchuk played football since his student days – he played for the team of the State University of Pennsylvania, in which he demonstrated a confident, effective game. At the height of his career, he moved to the Rochester team and in the same 1973 he played for the first US national team. On September 9, he came on as a substitute in the 1-0 win over Bermuda. Also played in matches with Haiti, Israel. In three seasons in Rochester, Lancers played 52 matches, scored 3 goals and gave 5 assists. After Rochester, Rymarchuk played for the Tacoma Tides team, and also tried his hand at Indore Soccer. Alas, at that time, football in the United States was going through hard times. After the collapse of the big commercial leagues, there were several more tournament projects that did not become successful (up to, perhaps, the modern MLS). Therefore, in the end, Andy’s career ended quickly, and after the stellar 1973 he was called up to the national team only once, and even then – for an unofficial match with the “national team of Italian clubs”.
Note also that several players with names that may belong to Ukrainians played in the US national team, but we cannot speak with confidence about their origin. This is, for example, William Demko, who was part of the US team at the 24 Olympics. Philadelphian Demko then took part in matches with the Poles and the Irish. Or Chris Snitko, who went to the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 with the US team. Snitko played for MLS clubs in 1996-01 – Kansas City Wizards, Chicago Fire, Dallas Burn.Worked as a goalkeeper coach at the Chicago Fire. According to the testimony of the Ukrainians who played for the Chicago team, he did not speak Ukrainian, since he was born into a family of not the first generation of immigrants. This is Henry Noga, the goalkeeper who made two appearances for the USA in 1960.
And finally, let’s say once again about the Chizhovich brothers – Eugene (Eugene) was the head coach of the US national team in 1973, Walter (Vladimir) in 1976-80. Under Evgeny Chizhovich, the US national team won 3 out of 5 matches, played 2 more in a draw, under Vladimir won 8 victories in 32 matches, drew 14 matches, lost 10.Eugene Chizhovich worked in youth football until last year. By the way, he became the prototype of the coach in the film Gracie (it tells about a girl who wanted to play soccer). Walter Chizhovich was actually the first full-time head coach of the US national team, he also reported to the youth teams and the national team committee as a whole. Both of them worked a lot on the development of football in the United States, and, not without their feasible help, soccer turned from a backward sport into a progressive sport. For example, back in the late 70s in the United States there was already a licensing of coaches, a system of “training camps” – the collection of youth and adult national teams, a system of accounting and statistical processing of football. In recent years, there are also a lot of ours in US football. For example, Nick Palodiychuk recently played for the US youth team. But the general manager of the MLS Toronto FC club is Tim Bezbatchenko (a native of the United States, who is called one of the most promising football functionaries in North America).
Of course, years and generations “wash away” Ukrainian names, add a foreign accent to Ukrainian speech and leave only “chudarnatsky” surnames for the memory of future generations. But even now, already in the new generations of emigrants, there are new players, so there is a hope that the names of our fellow countrymen and their descendants will still sound in US soccer.

The doctor of the US national gymnastics team has been raping athletes for more than 20 years. Why wasn’t he caught earlier?
Match TV captures the main feature of the HBO documentary about the loudest scandal in the history of American sports: the cover-up of coaches, the FBI’s negligence, the rapist’s last word in court.
Match TV captures the main feature of the HBO documentary about the loudest scandal in the history of American sports: the cover-up of coaches, the FBI’s negligence, the rapist’s last word in court.
In the fall of 2016, statements by gymnasts about sexual abuse by the former doctor of the US national team and the University of Michigan Larry Nassar began to appear in the American media. There were more and more statements every day. As a result, 125 people filed claims against him. Among the victims of Nassar, Olympic champions – Eli Reisman, Simone Biles, McKayla Maroni.

In January 2018, the doctor was sentenced to 40 years in prison. To prevent Nassar from being released on parole, Judge Rosemary Aqualina gave him another 175 years in prison.
In May 2019, HBO released a documentary film At the heart of gold: Inside the USA gymnastics scandal (in Russian translation it was released under the title “The Price of Gold: A Scandal in American Gymnastics”), which explains why Nassar has so many victims and no one during the whole time of this practice could stop him.Match TV sets the stage for an HBO movie.

Larry was a friend of the gymnasts
At the beginning of the film, it is told about what a difficult sport it is, constantly associated with injuries. The coaches with whom Nassar worked had a tough approach to their athletes, which created a supportive environment for Nassar.
For example, spouses Bella and Martha Karolyi, who led the national team’s training program, required all gymnasts to attend a monthly training camp at their Texas ranch. At the ranch, communication with personal trainers and parents was prohibited so that nothing would distract from training. 2012 Olympic coach John Geddert, who worked at the Twister gym, is called “Satan” and “tyrant” by the victims in the film for his brutal treatment of gymnasts.

Nassar was the complete opposite of coaches. A classic example of a rapist from a Hollywood movie: sociable, smiling, kind, family man. The one you think of last.People came to see Nassar not only to heal the injury, but also to share the misfortune. Everyone trusted him. Larry could always listen, brought the athletes food, gave sweets. He was admired. Here’s what the gymnasts said about him in the film:
- “He was great. We loved him “
- “He was always smiling. Was the best friend “
- “He was considered the guardian angel of the gymnasts. He constantly said that athletes should be protected. And such things are not often heard in elite sports “
- “I texted him almost every day.We were friends on Facebook, he wrote on my wall. She knew by sight his children and wife. He was a friend “
The athletes did not understand that they were being subjected to violent acts
Larry was constantly alone with the gymnasts, although, according to the rules, an assistant must be present at the procedures. However, he worked without gloves. The coaches turned a blind eye to this. The film describes Nassar’s methods.
If a gymnast came to him with back pain or in any other place far from the groin area, he would still stick his fingers where they should not.He explained his actions by the fact that there is a reflex point that will relieve this pain. During the procedure, Nassar did not stop talking, constantly asking the gymnasts about their studies and family, chatting up their victims. The underage athletes trusted the doctor and considered it a standard procedure.

“He took off his belt and started moaning. It seems to everyone that everything is obvious. But imagine a little girl who has no sexual experience. She was often told that this was a doctor from the Olympic Games and that he would help her. The girls didn’t understand anything, ”explains one of the victims in the film.
“At each visit, he touched my entire body, straightened, massaged my back. Not everyone understands that in gymnastics, touch is a common thing. We are used to being held by adults and helping us with stretching. We got used to being touched. But Larry went on. He explained to my mother that he would touch me near intimate places. I didn’t ask, but presented with the fact that he would do this, ”says one of the former patients of Dr. Nassar.
Nasser could have been jailed back in 1997, but the gymnast was intimidated by the coach
In 1997, gymnast Larissa Boyes complained about Nassar to the head coach of the University of Michigan Katty Klages:
“I studied at the“ Young Spartans ”club. The procedures were in doubt, and I wanted to discuss it with an adult to sort it out. Kathy Klages invited me to her office. I told her bluntly that Larry was sticking his fingers in me. She simply said that I did not understand anything, that he would never do anything inappropriate.Like, she has known him for many years, but I’m just wrong.
I was sitting in her office, and other girls from the team came in two by two. She asked if Larry did anything that raised questions. And everyone said no, except for one girl. She stayed with us. Katie still couldn’t believe what we were saying. Then Katie brought in a couple of older gymnasts. They said that his hands came close to certain places, but all within the bounds of decency. I insisted: “It was not so with me! He sticks his fingers inside. “Then the students left, the other girl too.
I explained again what was going on. Catty said, “I can apply, but there will be serious consequences for you and Larry Nassar, so think carefully.” I seem to have raised my hands and said, “I don’t want problems. I don’t want that. ” I ran out of the office, hid in the closet and cried for most of the workout.
On his next visit to Nassar, he stopped by and said, “I spoke to Catty.” My heart sank. It was so embarrassing that I was humiliated. He continued, “Kathy told me what worries you. You know that it helps you. ” I remember how I answered: “Forgive me, I am guilty. I messed things up and I’m sorry. ” I convinced myself that the problem is in me and I must endure. And then I jumped onto the table, and he continued the same for four more years.
Kathy knew there was a certain procedure to be followed, but she herself decided not to do anything. Therefore, I blame the university. She is his employee, ”Larissa Boyes said in the film.

Kathy Klages is currently awaiting trial. In March 2018, the University of Michigan agreed to pay $ 500 million to those affected. The total number of victims is 332 people.
In 2014, a formal complaint was filed against Nassar, but Larry was helped by the university
In 2014, University of Michigan student Amanda Tomashow filed a formal complaint about Nassar’s lewd behavior:
“I described exactly what was happening to them.Nassar put his fingers into me, I pushed him away, got up, he rushed to the corner of the room to hide his erection, ”recalls Amanda Tomashow.
The University has begun an investigation. To assess Nassar’s actions, the university brought in four experts, selected by Larry himself. Three out of four were his former students, one was a doctor he knew. Experts did not find any traces of violence.

“Larry said it was a cure.I said, “This is sexual assault.” And then they asked his friends for an opinion. Erection was not mentioned in the report. Nothing is said about me pushing him away. I was 24. I knew what was proper for a doctor and what was not. They made me question it, ”says Tomashow.
Nassar was suspended for 90 days pending investigation. He then returned to work on condition that the recommendations were followed:
• Examine patients with gloves
• At all examinations, the presence of an assistant is mandatory
• Explain your actions to patients
No one followed the recommendations.Nassar continued to work as usual.
From 1997 to 2015, 17 complaints were received against Nassar in various forms.
In 2015, the FBI learned about Nassar’s affairs, but did not take the report seriously
In the spring of 2015, at the monthly gathering at the Karolyi ranch, a member of the national team, Maggie Nichols, asked Eli Raisman: “What is the doctor’s technique? Why is he sticking his fingers inside me. I’m not sure if I need this. ” Personal trainer Nichols heard about this and reported to the Artistic Gymnastics Federation.
Federation President Steve Penny decided to conduct an internal investigation first, which lasted five weeks. During this period, Nassar continued to work at the University of Michigan because the federation did not report anything. Penny then spoke about the problem to the head of the US NOC, who replied that he needed to immediately contact the FBI.
The FBI investigation has not even begun. The message went to the Indianapolis office, where they said they would send all the data to the Detroit office, but they never did.The bureau did not take the message from the federation seriously.

After Nassar was sentenced, the entire leadership of the US Artistic Gymnastics Federation resigned. Steve Penny is awaiting trial for not reporting Larry’s cases to the police for 41 days.
The investigation began after the gymnast was confessed to reporters
Nassar continued to work at the University of Michigan. In the summer of 2016, former gymnast Rachel Denholander contacted a journalist, who was told that Nassar had raped her since she was 15.After that, a member of the US Olympic team spoke anonymously, calling Larry a rapist. The scandal gained momentum, and many began to follow Denhollander’s example, sharing their experiences.

Some of Nassar’s victims at first refused to believe he was guilty:
“I read the headline and laughed in surprise. I thought: “No, it can’t be! He’s a saint! ” Of course, I didn’t like the procedures, but I thought it was real treatment. At first I got angry: “How dare you accuse such a kind person of such a terrible crime?”
I didn’t even read the article because I was at a dance rehearsal in college. And when, after the rehearsal, I began to read, I realized that Rachel had stated everything accurately. She described my own experience: strange comments, no gloves, manipulation inside. And he said that he did not touch anyone inside. That evening my head boiled.
It turned out that for seven years I had mistaken his actions for medical procedures and honest help.I have always praised and recommended him. It turns out that I sent them to the monster. ”
As a result, Nassar was arrested, but not because of the messages of the gymnasts, but according to the statement of the daughter of Larry’s friends, who was not his patient. That is, he could not, in that case, refer to the fact that these were necessary medical procedures.
Nassar did not last long. He was released on $ 1 million bail. After a search of Larry’s house found hard drives containing 37,000 images of child pornography, he was arrested a second time without the right to be released on bail.
In court, the father of three victims tried to attack Nassar, the lawyers received threats
Nassar pleaded guilty to the sexual assault, but not immediately. As part of the plea agreement, the court refused to press charges in 125 lawsuits against Nassar, but Larry had to listen to the victims’ statements. At first, 88 injured girls wanted to speak out, but every day there were more and more people willing to tell their story. As a result, 156 people appeared in the court.
The trial began on January 16, 2018, and for a week the girls approached the podium, looked into Nassar’s eyes, read out their statements and left with tears to applause. Here are some of the events that are shown in the courtroom film:
1. The first to speak was the daughter of Larry Nassar’s friends, according to whom the doctor was arrested.
Kayla Stevens / Photo: © Scott Olson / Staff / Getty Images News / Gettyimages.ru
“Until this moment, I was called ‘victim Z-A’ or ‘family friend’. I gave my first testimony in this case, fearing attention. She asked me to hide my name. Today I am addressing you openly. This is a statement for you. I have nothing to be ashamed of.
My parents became friends with Larry and his wife Steffany when I was about six years old.The first abuse began on the part of Larry Nassar. Let me tell you what I was interested in at the age of six. Favorite TV program – “Big Red Dog Clifford”, favorite book – “Junie B Jones”. I didn’t know how to multiply. I still had baby teeth. At this level of maturity, I was forced to engage in sexual activities.
(Then the girl talks about these actions of Nassar, we skip it for ethical reasons.)
When I was 12, I told my parents. They demanded an explanation from Larry. He denied everything. Due to circumstances that I do not want to talk about now, my parents believed Larry Nassar, not me.
From 12 to 18 years old, I avoided contact with them. My father believed that only a disgusting person could slander someone so terribly. He believed that I was lying, and his beliefs destroyed our connection. We fought constantly. He said, “You have to apologize to Larry.” It was just before leaving for college that I tried again to clear my name.
Larry Nassar’s actions caused me a lot of harm. But it was even more terrifying to see my father find out what I went through. Dad and I tried to mend our relationship before he committed suicide in 2016. ”
2. The defendant’s lawyer said that she was threatened.
“They shouted at the defense lawyers. They threatened to kill my relatives and employees. Even kill my colleague’s children. As if we were all complicit. And oil was constantly added to this fire. In the end, the explosion was inevitable. “

3. The father of the three victims tried to attack Nassar in court.
– Your Honor, as part of the verdict – let me spend five minutes in a locked room with this monster.
– I already …
– Allow me?
– Our system …
– Yes or No?
– No, sir.
– Then just one minute.
– I can’t. The judicial system doesn’t work that way.
– Then you have to …
At this moment, the father rushes sharply towards Nassar, but he is intercepted by the police. They knock the assailant to the floor, handcuff him and take him out of the courtroom. Leaving the father says: “And if it was your daughter?”
A fragment of the attack can be seen in the official movie trailer.
4. Judge Aqualina read a letter from Larry Nassar, which he wrote during the hearing.
Judge Rosemary Aqualina / Photo: © Scott Olson / Staff / Getty Images News / Gettyimages.ru
“He declares, ‘I am very worried that my psyche simply will not stand listening to the witnesses for another four days.” Sir, a few phrases are causing me questions. You write: “Now Aqualina is hosting a four-day media circus for sentencing. She wants me to sit next to her all four days in order to get into the lenses of all cameras. ”
5. Nassar burst into tears as former gymnast Trinea Gonchar read her statement.
“If you may, I would like to address him directly, please. What have you done? I told my mother that the hardest thing is to see how small they are, these young girls. She replied: “You were the same, if not younger.”
I made a tough decision this week. I decided whether to support you further or support the girls. Larry, I choose them!
I’ve known you all my life – 31 out of 37 years. I remember your wedding. We thought Stephanie was the luckiest woman in the world. My heart aches for her and your children. Why lose so much good? For what?
Larry Nassar / Photo: © Scott Olson / Staff / Getty Images News / Gettyimages.ru
We loved you like a dear. Thought you loved us too. I decided to look you in the eye and tell you that you hurt us. It hurts me because I raped almost my whole life. You’ve hurt me a lot, old friend. I don’t know who you are anymore. Larry, I thought you’d be glad to know that I was four months old. I got a boy. And all my life I will do everything so that people like you do not harm any of us.
Goodbye Larry. I close the door. God bless your dark soul. “
6. The last speaker was Rachel Denholander, after whose announcement in the media it all started.
When Rachel made her speech, the judge thanked her: “You have amassed an army of fighters and have become a great general. All voices have sounded thanks to you. Thanks”.
7. The last word of Larry Nassar before sentencing.

– This is a short statement. Your words these days evoked a strong emotional reaction in me and shook me deeply.I realize that my feelings are nothing compared to the pain, trauma and emotional destruction that you are experiencing, each of you. There are no words to describe how deeply I regret what happened. An acceptable apology is impossible to describe and utter. I will carry your words through all the remaining days.
“I’ll read more of your letter,” Judge Aqualina said. “I want to do this because it will be part of your apology, if you can trust them. Listen to your own words: “The press convinced them that all my actions were impermissible and vicious. It seems to them that I have betrayed their trust. There is no anger in hell comparable to that of a rejected woman. ”
The last sentence in the letter drew the ire of those in the courtroom. In an interview on the HBO camera, the victims said that at that moment they realized that Larry did not admit his guilt, and only then they stopped feeling sorry for him.

Unlike the Americans themselves, the international football authorities were still interested in promoting football in the States. When in 1988. The states received the right to host the World Cup in six years, the main condition for FIFA was to recreate its own national league. Such an organization called the Major Football League (MLS) was created in December 1993, regular championship matches began in the 1996 season.
Through the World Cup, the American and international football leadership has achieved their primary goal of bringing American attention to the sport. Until now, the 1994 World Cup holds the record for the average (69 thousand.) and total (3.6 million) attendance. Keeping interest proved to be more difficult, so MLS had to “tighten its belts” until popularity allowed the league to have a steady income from investments and advertising. For this, in the very first season, a “salary ceiling” was introduced, which later developed into a whole system of restrictions. For example, in the 2014 season, MLS clubs were allowed to have up to 30 players with a maximum allowable remuneration of $ 387.5 thousand per year.
In parallel, the league tried to keep fans interested by experimenting with the “Americanization” of football.Instead of a timer in MLS matches, they began to use a countdown, which is more typical for hockey and basketball. If the game ended in a draw, the teams carried out a series of “shootouts”, reminiscent of both traditional penalties and hockey shootouts.
But these innovations, according to Sports Illustrated, did not attract new fans and at the same time alienated fans of traditional football. Litigation of players with MLS over the “salary ceiling”, futile attempts to attract interest and funding have cast doubt on the prospects of the new league. The final blow was the failure of the US team at the World Cup in France in 1998: the Americans lost all three matches, including Iran. That game was called “the most politicized match in the history of the World Cup”.
American dream
In financial terms, the state of the football league in the early years of its existence was extremely difficult. According to the New York Times, MLS lost $ 250 million in its first five gaming seasons (until 2001), which is comparable to NASL’s losses on the eve of its disbandment. However, in 1999. the first football stadium in the United States was built in Columbus (World Cup matches were played on American football fields). The following year, the league stopped experimenting with “Americanization”.
A new impetus to “soccer” was given by the unexpectedly successful performance of the American team at the 2002 World Cup. – the team reached the quarterfinals, which was its best result in more than 70 years. Since then, the consistently confident performance of the United States in international tournaments correlates with the progressive development of MLS.Over the past 12 years, the league has added nine teams, not excluding a single club. MSL plans to sign contracts with four more young teams by 2017.
Since 2007 MLS began expanding into Canada and is currently partnering with three Canadian clubs. Expanding the geography of potential fans and viewers is one of the league’s ways to ensure its ROI. According to the Los Angeles Times, by 2011. the popularity of “European” football in the United States has become high enough for TV channels to start paying MLS for the right to broadcast matches.Autumn 2011. two landmark deals took place: MLS signed a three-year contract for $ 30 million with NBC, and the leader of the championship – California-based Galaxy – agreed with Time Warner for an exclusive screening of the club’s matches. The ten-year contract cost Time Warner $ 55 million, a record deal in MLS history.
The current league inherited another part of the strategy from its predecessors – attracting the stars of world football. In Galaxy for six seasons, David Beckham played, who in 2014.founded his own club in Miami. Since 2010 French forward Thierry Henry plays at the New York Red Bulls. In June 2014. the fledgling New York City team announced that Spaniard David Villa, 2010 World Champion, will join them next season.
Average attendance at MLS matches is approaching 19,000 (up from 14,000 in 2000), but the league still needs to learn how to monetize audiences.
According to Forbes, MLS has made the most progress in the last five years. If we compare the 2008 season with the 2012 season, the average capitalization of the league club has grown from $ 37 million to $ 103 million, only a third of the teams have an operating loss. But the league itself is still unprofitable (there are no exact figures, since the MLS does not disclose the financial statements) and so far cannot afford large expenses. The average salary for an MLS footballer is $ 160,000 per year (salary figures are disclosed annually by the players’ union) – compared, for example, with the $ 1.9 million that athletes earn on average in American football, and $ 5.15 million in the National Basketball Association ( NBA).The average salary for an English Premier League player is $ 2.7 million per year.

Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball for the seventh time

Argentine footballer Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball for the seventh time – the prize for the best footballer in the world at the end of the year according to the France Football.
Many fans and experts expected Bayern Munich and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski to receive the Ballon d’Or this year, who has been showing enchanting performance for several consecutive seasons. He has already scored 53 goals for Bayern this year.
However, Lewandowski took second place in the voting of football experts. He, however, was the first in history to receive a new prize – the prize for the best scorer of the year.
Third place went to Italian Brazilian Jorginho (Chelsea), fourth – Frenchman Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), fifth – another French footballer Ngolo Kante (Chelsea).
The Lev Yashin Prize – the prize for the best goalkeeper – was awarded to the goalkeeper of the Italian national team and PSG Gianluigi Donnarumme.
Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom Messi shared the title of the best football player in the world for an entire football era, this time took sixth place.
34-year-old Lionel Messi this year moved from Barcelona, where he spent his entire career, to the French Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Things were already going pretty badly for Barcelona, but Messi himself had another brilliant year.
He broke Pele’s record for the most goals scored per club, became the first player in history in one of the five strongest leagues in Europe to score at least 20 goals in 13 consecutive seasons and at the same time broke Gerd Müller’s record of more than 30 goals in 12 seasons contract.
In addition, in the summer, Messi finally won the big title with the national team – in the Copa America final, Argentina defeated Brazil.
Messi himself said about this victory at a ceremony on Monday in Paris.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be here again. Two years ago I thought, this is it, this is the last time. But winning the Copa America was key,” Messi said. “This is a special year for me – thanks to Copa America. This is very important – win the Maracana and I was so happy to celebrate with the Argentines. “
“I don’t know. If this is the best year of my life – I have a long career behind me, but it was a special year: we Argentina won the title after going through hard times and a lot of criticism.”
History and statistics
The Golden Ball was first awarded in 1956. The Englishman Stanley Matthews became the winner of the award then.
Now 180 sports observers are choosing the best football player in the world in absentia, ranking candidates.
In 2020, the award was not presented for the first time due to the coronavirus pandemic.A year earlier, Messi received it, and in 2018, Croatian Luka Modric. Before Modric, Messi and Ronaldo had received the award for many years.
There are five English club players in the top ten this year, but not a single Englishman (the best of the English, Raheem Sterling is in 15th place).
In addition, there are three PSG players and three Frenchmen in the top ten, but these sets intersect only on Kilian Mbappa.
