What are the main differences between field hockey and ice hockey. How do the origins, equipment, and gameplay of these sports compare. Which sport is older and more widely played globally.
Origins and History: Tracing the Roots of Field Hockey and Ice Hockey
The origins of field hockey and ice hockey reveal fascinating insights into their development and cultural significance. Field hockey boasts a much longer history, with roots tracing back thousands of years.
How old is field hockey? Archaeological evidence suggests that field hockey-like games were played as far back as 4,000 years ago. Ancient civilizations including the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Aztecs all had variations of stick-and-ball games that resembled modern field hockey.
When did modern field hockey emerge? The contemporary version of field hockey took shape in mid-19th century Britain. From there, British soldiers and colonists spread the game to various parts of the world.
In contrast, ice hockey has a more recent origin story. The first official ice hockey rules were established in Montreal, Canada in 1877. This makes ice hockey a relatively young sport compared to its field-based counterpart.
Team Composition: Comparing Player Roles and Formations
The number of players and team structures differ significantly between field hockey and ice hockey, reflecting the unique demands of each sport.
Ice Hockey Team Structure
- 6 players per team on the ice
- 3 forwards
- 2 defensemen
- 1 goalie
Field Hockey Team Structure
- 11 players per team on the field
- 5 forwards
- 3 halves (midfielders)
- 2 backs (defenders)
- 1 goalie
Why does field hockey have more players? The larger field size and different tactical approaches in field hockey necessitate a greater number of players to cover the playing area effectively.
Equipment and Gear: Essential Tools of the Trade
While both sports involve using sticks to propel an object into the opponent’s goal, the specific equipment used in field hockey and ice hockey varies considerably.
Field Hockey Equipment
- Curved stick (traditionally wooden, now often composite materials)
- Small, hard ball
- Shin guards
- Mouthguard
- Cleats or turf shoes
Ice Hockey Equipment
- Curved stick (composite materials)
- Hard rubber puck
- Helmet with face mask
- Shoulder pads, elbow pads, and knee pads
- Hockey gloves
- Ice skates
Why does ice hockey require more protective gear? The higher speeds, harder playing surface, and increased physical contact in ice hockey necessitate more comprehensive protective equipment to ensure player safety.
Playing Surface and Field Dimensions: From Grass to Ice
The most obvious difference between field hockey and ice hockey lies in their playing surfaces, which significantly impact gameplay, strategy, and player movement.
Field Hockey Playing Surface
- Natural grass or artificial turf
- Field dimensions: 100 yards (91.4 meters) x 60 yards (55 meters)
- Goal size: 7 feet (2.14 meters) high x 12 feet (3.66 meters) wide
Ice Hockey Playing Surface
- Ice rink
- Rink dimensions (NHL standard): 200 feet (61 meters) x 85 feet (26 meters)
- Goal size: 4 feet (1.22 meters) high x 6 feet (1.83 meters) wide
How does the playing surface affect gameplay? The ice surface in hockey allows for faster movement and quicker changes of direction, leading to a more rapid-paced game compared to field hockey.
Game Duration and Structure: Periods vs. Halves
The timing and structure of field hockey and ice hockey games differ, affecting the flow and intensity of each sport.
Field Hockey Game Structure
- Two 35-minute halves
- Short halftime break
- Total game time: 70 minutes
Ice Hockey Game Structure
- Three 20-minute periods
- Two intermissions between periods
- Total game time: 60 minutes
Why are ice hockey games divided into three periods? The intense physical nature of ice hockey necessitates more frequent breaks, allowing players to rest and teams to strategize.
Global Popularity and Participation: Comparing Reach and Influence
While both sports have dedicated followings, their global popularity and participation rates vary significantly.
Field hockey is played in over 70 countries worldwide, with strong followings in Europe, Asia, and Oceania. It is a popular sport at both the amateur and professional levels, and is included in the Olympic Games for both men and women.
Ice hockey, while immensely popular in certain regions, has a more concentrated global presence. It has a particularly strong following in North America, Northern Europe, and Russia. The National Hockey League (NHL) in North America is widely regarded as the world’s premier ice hockey league.
Which sport has more global participation? Field hockey generally has broader global participation due to its lower equipment costs and ability to be played on various surfaces. However, ice hockey tends to have more intense fan bases and higher professional salaries in its stronghold regions.
Physical Demands and Gameplay: Analyzing Athletic Requirements
Both field hockey and ice hockey are physically demanding sports, but they challenge athletes in different ways.
Field Hockey Physical Demands
- Endurance running
- Quick sprints and direction changes
- Upper body strength for stick handling
- Lower body agility
Ice Hockey Physical Demands
- Explosive skating speed
- Balance and coordination on ice
- Upper body strength for shooting and checking
- Core strength for stability
How does the physicality of the sports compare? Ice hockey generally involves more physical contact between players, with body checking being a legal and strategic part of the game. Field hockey, while still a contact sport, has stricter rules regarding physical interactions between players.
The speed of play also differs significantly between the two sports. Ice hockey’s slick surface and the use of skates result in faster-paced gameplay compared to field hockey. This increased speed contributes to the exciting, high-energy nature of ice hockey matches.
Tactical Approaches: Strategies and Gameplay Dynamics
While both sports share the basic objective of scoring goals, the tactical approaches in field hockey and ice hockey differ due to their unique playing environments and team structures.
Field Hockey Tactics
- Emphasis on ball possession and controlled passing
- Use of the entire field width to create space
- Set plays from penalty corners
- Zonal marking in defense
Ice Hockey Tactics
- Quick transitions between offense and defense
- Forechecking to pressure opponents in their defensive zone
- Power play strategies during penalties
- Line changes to maintain fresh players on the ice
How do the different field sizes impact strategy? The larger field in field hockey allows for more deliberate build-up play and tactical positioning, while the smaller ice rink in hockey necessitates quicker decision-making and more frequent turnovers.
Skill Set and Techniques: Mastering the Fundamentals
Both field hockey and ice hockey require a unique set of skills and techniques that players must master to excel in their respective sports.
Essential Field Hockey Skills
- Dribbling with the stick on one side
- Accurate passing and receiving
- Shooting techniques (push, flick, slap shot)
- Tackling and defensive positioning
Key Ice Hockey Skills
- Skating (forward, backward, crossovers)
- Puck handling while skating
- Shooting (wrist shot, slap shot, backhand)
- Body checking and physical play
Which sport requires more specialized equipment skills? Ice hockey demands a unique combination of skating ability and stick handling, making it particularly challenging for beginners. Field hockey, while still requiring significant skill, allows players to build on more familiar movements like running and hand-eye coordination.
Officiating and Rules: Governing the Game
Both field hockey and ice hockey have comprehensive rulebooks and officiating systems to ensure fair play and maintain the flow of the game.
Field Hockey Officiating
- Two umpires on the field
- Strict rules against dangerous play and high sticks
- Complex penalty corner rules
- No offside rule in modern field hockey
Ice Hockey Officiating
- Two referees and two linesmen on the ice
- Penalties resulting in power plays
- Icing and offside rules
- Fighting penalties and misconduct rules
How do penalty systems differ between the sports? Ice hockey’s penalty system, which often results in power play situations, adds a unique strategic element to the game. Field hockey penalties typically result in free hits or penalty corners, which have their own set of complex rules and strategies.
Cultural Significance and Professional Leagues: From Grassroots to Elite Competition
Both field hockey and ice hockey have rich cultural histories and well-established professional leagues, though their global impact varies significantly.
Field Hockey’s Cultural Impact
- National sport in countries like India and Pakistan
- Strong presence in Commonwealth nations
- Major international tournaments include the Hockey World Cup and Olympics
- Growing professional leagues in Europe and Asia
Ice Hockey’s Cultural Significance
- Deeply ingrained in Canadian and Northern European cultures
- National Hockey League (NHL) is the world’s premier professional league
- Strong college and junior systems in North America
- International competitions like the IIHF World Championship and Olympic hockey tournaments
Which sport has a more lucrative professional scene? Ice hockey, particularly the NHL, offers significantly higher salaries and greater commercial success compared to professional field hockey leagues. However, field hockey enjoys broader global participation at grassroots and amateur levels.
Adaptations and Variations: Evolving the Sports
Both field hockey and ice hockey have spawned various adaptations and related sports, showcasing their flexibility and enduring appeal.
Field Hockey Variations
- Indoor hockey: Played on a smaller court with modified rules
- Beach hockey: Adapted for play on sand
- Hockey5s: A faster, five-a-side version of the game
Ice Hockey Adaptations
- Sledge hockey: Adapted for players with physical disabilities
- Pond hockey: Informal version played on frozen ponds or lakes
- Roller hockey: Played on inline or quad skates
How have these variations impacted the sports’ accessibility? These adaptations have made both sports more accessible to a wider range of participants, allowing people to enjoy hockey-like games in various environments and with different physical abilities.
Technology and Innovation: Advancing the Games
Both field hockey and ice hockey have embraced technological advancements to improve gameplay, player safety, and spectator experience.
Field Hockey Innovations
- Synthetic turf development
- Composite stick materials

How has technology impacted the viewer experience? Both sports have benefited from enhanced broadcast technologies, including high-definition slow-motion replays and advanced statistical analysis, which have deepened fan engagement and understanding of the games.
In conclusion, while field hockey and ice hockey share some fundamental similarities as stick-and-ball sports, they have evolved into distinct games with their own unique characteristics, challenges, and cultural significance. From their origins and equipment to their gameplay dynamics and global reach, these sports offer rich and varied experiences for players and spectators alike. Whether played on grass under the sun or on ice in a roaring arena, hockey in its various forms continues to captivate athletes and fans around the world.

It doesn’t take a sports expert to determine that one major difference between ice hockey and field hockey is the surface on which the games are played. The differences, however, go beyond the playing surface and may not be so obvious to the uninitiated hockey fan.
Origins. The Loudon Field Hockey Association claims that the origins of field hockey can be traced back 4,000 years, as evidenced by drawings on an ancient tomb in the Nile Valley. Evidence exists that shows ancient Aztecs, Greeks and Romans played similar forms of the game. The modern game of field hockey came to fruition in the mid-19th century in Great Britain. The British army brought the game to its colonies, and the first international competition took place in 1895. The first official ice hockey rules were established on the other side of the Atlantic in Montreal in 1877, with the first official league established just over a decade later.
Participants. Ice hockey uses six players per team at a time: three forwards, two defensemen and a goalie. Field hockey uses 11 players: five forwards, three halves, two backs and a goalie. Field hockey formations and team sizes vary depending on the level of play and coaching strategy. Field hockey is played in more than 70 nations around the world and has yet to attain the popularity of ice hockey.
Equipment. The basic objective of each game is the same: Shoot an object into the opponent’s net. The device used to shoot the object, the object itself and the nets, however, differ. A field hockey goal consists of two 7-foot high posts spaced 12 feet apart. An ice hockey goal stands 4 feet high and 6 feet wide. Field hockey uses a ball; ice hockey uses a puck. Both sports use curved sticks of differing strength to strike the object. Because of the physical element in ice hockey — body checking, for example — ice hockey players wear much more equipment. The hardness of an ice hockey puck and the increased speed involved with ice skates over shoes make ice hockey a faster-paced sport.
Time and place. An ice hockey game consists of three 20-minute periods and is played on an ice-covered surface of varying sizes. A field hockey game consists of two 35-minute halves and is played on a 60-by-100-yard grass field.
Despite the similarity in names and objectives, no one who has ever watched the two sports would ever confuse them.
What’s the Difference between Ice Hockey and Field Hockey?
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out the obvious difference between ice hockey and field hockey – it’s in the name. This is obvious even for those who haven’t been in contact with either outside the Break Away slot machine at the 7Sultans casino online. Break Away, a popular game at the 7Sultans is clearly about ice hockey. The very features that make it attractive for 7Sultans players – the generous bonuses and the attractive gameplay – have nothing to do with either of the sports, though. Break Away is played by general slot machine fans at the 7Sultans and beyond, with no regard whether they like their hockey on the rocks or not.
The differences between ice hockey and field hockey are far deeper than they appear, though. Let us make it clear, once and for all, what they are.
Field hockey is much older
Records about field hockey go back as far as 4,000 years. It was played in the ancient Egypt, with similar games being played by several other civilizations, like the Romans, the Aztecs, and the Greeks. All of them lived in a warm climate, so playing the game on ice was out of the question. The first time the game’s modern rules were written in stone (paper, actually) was in 1877, in Montreal. The first official league was established a decade later. Ice hockey was devised around the same time, although there are records showing that hockey was played on ice decades earlier.
Bigger teams
Ice hockey teams consist of six players per team: three forwards, two defenders, and a goalie. Field hockey, in turn, is played by far larger teams: five forwards, three halves, two backs and a goalie, for a total of eleven players per side.
Bigger field
The standard size of an ice hockey rink is 61 meters (200 ft) × 30.5 meters (100 ft) with a corner radius of 8.5 meters (28 ft). Field hockey, in turn, has a larger playfield to accommodate the larger teams: a 91.4 meters (100 yards) by 55 meters (60.1 yards) rectangular field, covered in natural grass turf or synthetic grass.
More playtime
A game of ice hockey consists of three periods of 20 minutes each. A field hockey game lasts longer – for two halved of 35 minutes each.
More equipment, more aggression, more blood
Ice hockey is a far more aggressive game than field hockey, which makes it an attraction on its own. Hard “body checks” and fights are common in the rink, which makes it necessary for the players to wear far more equipment. It’s a sport that’s often quite bloody: a goalie called Clint Malarchuk almost bled to death in 2015 when a blade cut his jugular during a match.
College field hockey rules, explained
With 2020 and the next round of Summer Olympics just around the corner, there’s no better time to get familiar with some more obscure sports than now.
(Note: NCAA field hockey follows the International Hockey Federation’s field hockey rule book.)
The Field
The dimensions of a standard field hockey field are similar to soccer, with a few variances that are very specific to the sport. The pitch is about 100 yards (91. 4 meters) long and 60 yards (55 meters) wide.
There is a halfway line, as well as two lines that sit at about the 25-yard (23 meters) mark from each end of the pitch.
Wikimedia Commons
Field hockey goals are 7 feet high and 12 feet wide. There are shooting circles that surround the goals — a semi-circle extending from the goal line, out to about 16 yards (15 meters), and then back to the goal line. These circles are the only area players are allowed to shoot the ball from. Any shot that goes in the goal outside of these semi-circles does not count. There is also a dashed circle that runs parallel to the shooting circle, which runs about 5 meters outside of the shooting circle.
Other proponents that make up the pitch include the penalty spot, a mark 7 yards (6.4 meters) from the goal, the penalty corner marks, two foot-long dashes about 5.5 yards (5 meters) and 11 yards (10 meters) from the center of the backline for offensive and defensive players and the long corner mark, a foot-long dash on the sideline about 5. 5 yards (5 meters) from the backline. It’s important to note that in NCAA field hockey the long corner mark is no longer used. It may still appear on the field, but it is not utilized in any way.
Field hockey is typically played on water-based astroturf. The sport can also be played on regular astroturf.
Gameplay
The goal of each field hockey match is to score more goals than your opponent before time runs out. The game is broken up into four quarters, each being 15 minutes long. If the game is tied after time runs out in the fourth quarter, it results in a draw. Extra time, overtime and shootout specifics, and when they would take place, differ from match to match and tournament to tournament.
When a shootout does take place, a single offensive player is put up against a goalie, similar to ice hockey. The offensive player then has eight seconds to try and score the goal. They can shoot as many times as they want as long as they have possession and as long as it is within the eight seconds.
To start a match, 11 players from each team take the pitch, as play begins when one team starts with the ball at the halfway line.
The team in possession of the ball will try to move the ball towards the opposing team’s goal via a variety of moves — passing, lifting or dribbling.
Passing is a direct transfer of the ball between two teammates, lifting is an airborne pass typically directed towards another teammate and dribbling is light touches to oneself to move the ball downfield.
NCAA Photos
One key difference between dribbling a puck in ice hockey and dribbling a ball in field hockey is that in field hockey the player is only allowed to touch the ball with one side of their stick — the flat side. The other side of the stick is known as the rounded side. If a player touches the ball with the rounded side, the other team is rewarded possession.
Defensive play is quite similar to soccer or ice hockey, with a few exceptions. Defenders are allowed to try to steal the ball with their stick from either the side or the front of an offensive player. Defenders are not allowed to try and steal the ball, also known as tackling, from behind.
Substitution
Substitution is another important aspect of field hockey any potential fan should know. Unlike soccer, field hockey is allowed an unlimited amount of substitutions. As long as the substitute comes on the field after the player being substituted comes off, the moves can happen at any time.
Penalties
Severe penalties are divided up into three categories — green cards, yellow cards and red cards. These penalties are typically given out when a player commits a dangerous play foul. Sometimes green cards are distributed for more common fouls such as substitution violations, intentionally delaying the game or being within a five-meter radius of the ball when attempting to defend a free hit.
Dangerous play fouls include excessive body contact with another player, misuse of the stick in a dangerous manner, lifting the ball within five meters of another player or playing the ball above shoulder height when perceived as dangerous.
- Green cards: Once a player receives a green card, they are suspended from playing for two minutes.
- Yellow cards: Once a player receives a yellow card, they are suspended from playing between five minutes and ten minutes depending on what the umpire decides.
- Red cards: Once a player receives a red card, they are permanently suspended from the game without substitution.
Another way field hockey distinguishes smaller penalties is through free hits. Free hits are awarded to a team when a player on the opposing team hits the ball with anything that is not the flat part of the stick, including kicking and hitting the ball with other body parts.
Free hits are also rewarded if a team commits third-party obstruction. Third-party obstruction is similar to a pick or screen in basketball and football — something that is illegal in field hockey. A player is not allowed to use their body to shield the ball from another player.
Corners & Penalty Strokes
There are two types of corners in field hockey — long corner and penalty/short corner.
Instead of taking place at the long-corner mark, long corners in the NCAA take place on the 25-yard/23-meter line in line with where the ball crossed the goal line. This happens when a defender unintentionally hits the ball behind their own goal line.
NCAA Photos
Defenders lined up ready to defend a penalty corner
Penalty corners, also known as short corners, take place on the penalty corner mark on the goal line. These take place when a defender intentionally hits the ball behind their own goal line or commits a foul that isn’t stopping a legitimate chance of a goal inside the shooting circle. All offensive players and defensive players must be out of the shooting circle until the ball is put back into play. The ball is typically hit to a player close to the top of the shooting circle, stopped and then shot onto goal.
Penalty strokes, which are much different than what happens in a penalty shootout mentioned earlier, takes place when a defender commits a foul against a player who has a legitimate chance to score in the shooting circle. The ball is placed at the penalty spot in the shooting circle and the shooter, similar to soccer and ice hockey, only has one shot to sneak it past the goalie.

Paul Guggenheimer: Men’s field hockey? Yes, it’s a thing and what a sport it is
A few days ago I was expressing my quadrennial lament to a colleague about the lack of coverage of one of my favorite Olympic sports — men’s field hockey.
His reply: “Men’s field hockey? Men play field hockey?”
“Yes!” I told him. “Men play field hockey all over the world, and it’s very popular in other countries.” There is even a U.S. men’s national field hockey team though its very existence seems to be a well kept secret.
It doesn’t help that the U.S. men didn’t qualify for this year’s Olympics, which is about the only time Americans pay attention to such obscure sports. I use that term because NBC relegates field hockey to the fringes of its coverage. There is also a U.S. women’s field hockey team, but it did not qualify for the Tokyo games either.
Ah, but what a sport.
First played in 19th-century England, field hockey features teams of 10 players each plus a goalkeeper. There is a lot of skill involved because the players, other than the goalie, are not allowed to use their feet or any other parts of their bodies to control the hard plastic ball. They can only hit the ball with the flat side of their stick — all of 46 millimeters wide.
But the players are extremely skilled at elevating those high-velocity shots that sometimes reach 100 mph.
Unlike ice hockey, field hockey is a non-contact sport. It moves fast and is played mostly on artificial turf. In short, it’s a lot of fun to watch.
But with no U.S. team involved, how does one become emotionally invested?
SI.com compiled a list of “who you should root for in the team sports that the U.S. didn’t qualify in.” Among the suggestions, the website chose the India men’s field hockey team, because it’s “a fun possible redemption story.” India has won 11 Olympic medals (eight gold), but none since 1980.
It turns out that India is well on its way to totally redeeming itself in Tokyo. It defeated Great Britain, inventor of the sport, 3-1, to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals, where it plays 2018 world champion Belgium. A victory would ensure India’s spot on the medal stand, as it would go on to face either Australia or Germany for the gold.
On the women’s side, SI.com chose Argentina as a team for Americans to root for, partly because of their “cool pink away uniforms.” Argentina defeated Germany, 3-0, Sunday to advance to the semis.
At the end of the day though, Americans want to be able to root for Americans in the Olympics. Field hockey is more widely played by women in the U.S., so it seems more likely that the U.S. women’s team would qualify in the immediate future.
But who knows? Maybe U.S. men’s coach Harendra Singh will get sick enough of hearing that some Americans don’t believe his team exists and use it to motivate them to qualify for Paris 2024 and perhaps even win a medal.
Now that could truly be called a “Miracle on … turf”?

Field Hockey Term Explanation | Field Hockey Camp
Continuing yesterday’s basic rules lesson, today we will focus more on all those weird words you might hear field hockey fanatics use. If you want to sound like you know what you are talking about, then you have to understand the lingo.
Field Hockey Gear and Field Terms
The first thing you do when you start learning about field hockey is look at the equipment. What is all that stuff and what do you call it if you want to sound like you know something about field hockey? First, you have to know what the gear is.
General Terms
- Field hockey. You might think that this is too obvious a term. And it is. It is only listed in order to point out that you might also hear it referred to as hockey. Just make sure if you hear people talking about hockey, you find out if it is ice or field before joining in.
- The ball. Ice hockey uses a puck. This is not ice hockey. Do not refer to the ball as a puck because it will point you out as a secret ice hockey fan and expose you as a field hockey newbie.
- The stick. This is what you call that giant stick you carry around. It is pretty self-explanatory. One thing that should be pointed out, though, is that goalies have a special stick called a goalie stick.
- The pitch. The field of play can be called a field, so don’t be intimidated to just call it what it is. However, you might also hear it referred to as a pitch. So keep that in mind.
- Goal cage. The goal, or goal cage, is the actual thing you are trying to keep the ball out of (on your side) or get the ball in (the other team’s side.)
Gear.
- Helmet with a full cage. You probably already know what a helmet is (that thing you put on your head.) But maybe you have never heard of a full cage. It’s that face protecting thing that is on the front of the helmet – that covers the face – and kind of looks like a cage.
- Throat protector. This looks almost like a really thick chocker or a priest’s collar. They have a lot of padding though and are worn by a goalie in order to, as the name suggests, protect the throat.
- Goalkeeper girdle and hotpants. Girdles and hotpants might not seem like sporty terms, but in this case they are. Goalies wear them in order to be better protected when they are using their body to block the goal.
- Blocker. This kind of looks like a snorkeling fin, but you wear it on your hand. You use it to block the ball from going in the glove. See? A lot of these terms are pretty straight on.
- Kickers. These are paddings worn over the shoes. That way, when you need to kick, you can do so without hurting yourself.
Remember, this is a list of definitions, not a list of necessary gear. Some things, like cleats, do not need to be defined, but do need to be worn. Do not think of this as a shopping list for field hockey gear.
General Terms
These are some basic terms that apply to field hockey.
- Bully. When there is a natural stop to play, someone from each team will take part in a bully in order to get the ball back into play. The players will tap their sticks three times, alternating between the ground and their opponents stick. Then they will go for the ball.
- Dangerous play. Play that could cause injury.
- Dribble. This is different than dribbling in basketball. It refers to running while controlling the ball with the stick.
- Flick. Move the stick to lift the ball off of the ground.
- Obstruction. Shielding the ball from another player with your body or your stick. This is an offence.
- Push. This is another self-defining term. You push the ball with your stick when you move it along the ground with a pushing motion.
- Scoop. When you place the head of the stick under the ball and shovel it forward by lifting it in the air, you are scooping.
- Time wasting. Anything that wastes time, causing play to be unable to start quickly.
Offensive Terms
When you are playing offensive, there are a lot of terms you might hear thrown around. It behooves you to know what people are talking about.
- Attacker. This is a forward player that tries to score a lot of goals.
- Assist. The play or two before a goal that helped lead to scoring the goal.
- Striker. Also called a center forward. This player covers the middle of the offensive area. They also take shots on goal.
- Hat trick. When a player scores three goals in a single game, they just got a hat trick.
- Give–and-go. An offensive tactic that occurs when an offensive player passes the ball to another player who passes it right back to the first player.
Defensive Terms
When you are on defense, there are different terms you might hear. Even if you play only offensive or only defensive, you need to know what all of the terms mean.
- Defender. A player whose job is to stop the other team from scoring goals.
- Channel. A tactic used on defense that forces the other team towards the sidelines and away from the goal.
- Closing down. Another defensive tactic. This one occurs when you force the opponent into a position that makes it easier to steal the ball.
- Cover. This defensive tactic occurs when a defender protects the goal by sticking to an opponent. Think of it a little as one-on-one coverage.
This is just a small sampling of the terms you might hear when you start hanging out with field hockey players or play yourself. However, now you know the rules, the positions, and you can talk some of the talk, you are practically a field hockey genius already. All you need now are a few lessons so that you can play the game as well as you can talk about it.
90,000 What is hockey and what are the rules of the game. What is it
What is hockey? Hockey is a popular sport that can become a fairly good form of fitness in the winter. In order to avoid a variety of injuries, players will need to purchase all the necessary equipment. Do not forget about the warm-up that should take place before the start of the game. So, it is worth talking in more detail about what hockey is.
What is a sports game?
Hockey is considered to be the most popular winter sport. This game will appeal not only to adults, but also to children. In any area of ice in the backyard, you can see a company playing the puck briskly. They already know exactly what ice hockey is.
Ice hockey is a sports game (a subspecies of ice hockey), which consists of a competition between two teams. Athletes must throw the puck into the opponent’s goal, passing it with the help of clubs. But at the same time, you must try to protect your goal. Whoever scores more – he won.
What do I need to purchase to play?
In order to understand what hockey is, you need to talk about equipment. What do I need to purchase to play hockey?
- The equipment of a player, who is a field player, includes: a hockey stick, bib, skates, helmet, elbow pads, a shell that protects the groin area from being hit by a puck and other various injuries. You will also need to purchase hockey shorts that have a special seal. They will be able to prevent injuries from falls and collisions, as well as from being hit by a puck.Gloves, shin guards and a sweater, which should be worn over the bib, cannot be dispensed with.
- The equipment required by the goalkeeper contains the following elements: mask, trap (gloves that are designed to catch the puck), pads.
- Wood or other material is used in the manufacture of golf clubs. For example, aluminum. Plastic can also be used.
- The diameter of the washer reaches 7.62 centimeters. In its manufacture, vulcanized rubber or other material approved by the Ice Hockey Federation is used.Basically, its color is black.
What rules need to be considered?
So, let’s move on to the next point of the question about what is ice hockey. The rules of the game are as follows:
- Before starting the game, the manager or the coach himself must provide the referee with a list, which will indicate the names and numbers of the athletes taking part in the competition. The list must include the player who is the captain and the athlete who is his substitute. Each team can provide a list of a minimum of 20 field players and two goalkeepers. Once the gameplay has started, you cannot make any changes. If the team cannot release the required number of players in uniform on the ice, then the game stops. This must be reported to certain authorities.
- Each team must have a captain and about two deputies. The captain’s mark must be marked on the form in the form of the letter “C”. The deputies can be recognized by the letter “A”. Letters must be distinct from each other.Their height should reach 8 cm. Only these players will be able to discuss certain issues with the judge that may arise during the game process. The captain or substitute cannot be a goalkeeper, player coach or manager. In the event that the captain or substitutes are not on the ice, they can go to it only at the invitation of the referee. In the event that all of the listed players are on the ice, then only the captain can discuss any issues with the referee.
These are the basic rules you need to know in order to play ice hockey.Naturally, there are still a large number of rules and nuances that you should be aware of when playing such a game. For example, the gate cannot be moved.
Should the child be sent to the hockey section?
Parents often try to find out what hockey is for children. They need this in order to understand whether it is worth giving their child to the section to engage in this sport. This business has both pros and cons. For example, hockey will help the baby’s sports development, make him stronger, etc.But among the minuses, there is a high risk of injury. However, everyone should make their own choice.
The popularity of ice games
Hockey has gained wide popularity in the modern world. Many bookmakers offer betting. Anyone can also bet on the total. And it cannot be said that there are few such people. What is hockey total? This is the total number of points or goals that will be achieved by a particular team.
What is the game played on the grass?
What is off-ice hockey? Playing on the grass is a summer sport that is listed as an Olympic sporting event.Only the Field Hockey Federation, which is an international organization, can organize competitions in this game.
This game gained the greatest popularity in Great Britain and those countries that are former British colonies – Pakistan, India, Australia. In America and Canada, only college or university girls are fond of this type of hockey.
From the history of a sporting event
What is field hockey? They began to think about this even in Ancient Egypt and Greece. The Aztecs and the Japanese were also fond of it. The rules of this game were invented in England at the beginning of the 20th century. Since that time, there have been no major changes as such.
The first championship in this sport took place back in 1971. Since then, such competitions have been held constantly. In 1908, field hockey became an Olympic sporting event. Among men, competitions began to be held again from 1908.
In Russia, a similar game became popular around 1960.The first field hockey organization appeared around 1967. She became a member of the International Federation. However, in the USSR, this game did not become as popular as ice hockey.
What rules you need to know
Field hockey is played by athletes divided into two teams. Each has 11 people. The duration of one half is 35 minutes. The break between them is 10 minutes. As in other types of hockey, athletes use hockey sticks. The gameplay involves attempts to score the ball into the opposing team’s goal with a stick. Only the goalkeeper can touch the ball with his hands or feet. Other players are not allowed to take this step.
The game takes place on an artificial surface. Victory is awarded to the group of athletes that scores more goals. If the score is equal, then a draw will be declared or extra time will be assigned. A dispute can also be resolved with a penalty kick.
Differences between the two sports
These are the basic rules that field hockey carries. As you can see, there are colossal differences between the above sports not only in coverage, but also in equipment. And the injury risk of these sports is seriously different in autumn. Hardly anyone will argue with the fact that ice hockey is many times more dangerous than field hockey.
Conclusion
But regardless of the differences, in essence the games are very similar. In addition, sport is sport – they need to be engaged in any of its manifestations. Therefore, one has only to wish good luck to those people who want to devote their lives to hockey. And it doesn’t matter if they play it on the grass or on the ice. I hope you now know what ice hockey is and how it differs from the same sport, only on the grass.
Field hockey | Don’t forget to water your lawn.
Russia has always been considered a hockey country. Every year, the world championships rivet millions of viewers to the screens, and the regular matches of the KHL have long found their loyal fans.People are interested in hockey, they love it. That’s just the game on ice is meant by this sport.
Another hockey, “summer”, is also available in our country, but … it seems to be not there. When, for example, was the last time you saw the broadcast of a field hockey match? Perhaps from the Rio Olympics. The correspondent of “Sport Day by Day” is investigating whether it is possible to fall in love with this Olympic sport.
Intellectuals are playing!
The reason was found right away. This summer, St. Petersburg hosted the European field hockey championship among juniors under 21 (Division II).In the final, the French beat the Poles with a score of 3: 0. Our team won only two of five matches: against Turkey and Ukraine.
Field hockey is in no way inferior to the popular football or ice hockey in terms of entertainment. Another thing is that this game now lacks elements of the show and popularization in comparison with basketball, volleyball or the same football.
Along with golf, field hockey can safely be considered a sport for intellectuals. No wonder the royal family of Great Britain plays it.”Summer” hockey has been Olympic since 1908. By the late 1970s, it had become the most popular sport among students at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. It combines hockey, football and a bit of golf. This game develops coordination, organization (played by 11 people), the ability to think quickly and make decisions.
11 thousand views
Field hockey is technically difficult. Due to the variability of the flanking game, this sport uses more width of the field than others. In modern field hockey, players participate in both defense and attack, regardless of their role and positional functions. The former division of players in a team into defenders and forwards is becoming more and more symbolic. If the opposing team has the ball, you need to defend, any loss of the ball by the opponent means an opportunity for an attack.
Modern field hockey is played on artificial turf all over the world. The lawn must be watered so that the ball glides like on a billiard table, without jumping or changing its trajectory. In addition, falling into a wet field is less dangerous.
Another curious feature of field hockey is only the left-hand grip of the stick. The right hand is designed to support her. There is no such thing as a left-handed stick.
Despite all its attractiveness, field hockey is not so widespread in Russia. But the Field Hockey Federation is developing this sport. The matches of the European Youth Championship just held in St. Petersburg, shown on the channel of the International Ice Hockey Federation, attracted a significant audience. The number of views of the broadcasts reached 11 thousand. This is a very good number for field hockey. This means that its popularity is growing.

Hockey
A sport in which two teams try to hit with a hard, round ball or puck the opponent’s goal using sticks. Each team has one goalkeeper who defends the goal of his team. See the rules of the ice hockey game.
Hockey is divided into types:
• Ice hockey – played on ice with a small (168 g) rubber disc called the puck. The most popular of all types of hockey – usually the puck is omitted. Canada is considered the homeland. Popular in Russia, Canada, USA, Scandinavian countries, Czech Republic, Latvia, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine, Belarus, Finland and Kazakhstan.
• Inline hockey is an analogue of ice hockey played on roller skates.
• Field hockey – played on grass (or other suitable) ground with a small, hard ball. Popular in Australia, India, Pakistan and Malaysia.
• Indoor hockey – an analogue of field hockey played on a handball court.
• Ball hockey (Russian hockey) – played on ice with a small, hard ball. Most popular in Russia, Sweden, Finland, and Norway.
• Mini-bandy (rink-bandy) – bandy played on an ice hockey field.
• Floorball – indoor hockey played with plastic hockey sticks and a hollow plastic ball.
• Vertical hockey and Luge hockey – types of hockey for the disabled.
The first ice hockey tournament of the Olympic Games took place at the 1920 Summer Olympics (VII Olympiad). Since 1924, ice hockey has been moved to the program of the Winter Olympic Games. Since 1930, the World Cup has been held annually. The women’s ice hockey tournament has been included in the Olympic program since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. In 1983, at the IIHF session, the 1920 competitions received the status of an independent world championship, but not a separate Olympic hockey tournament. Until 1972, the World Championships during the Olympics were held as part of the Olympic tournaments, in 1972 and 1976 – separately from them, and in 1980-1988 they were not held during the Olympics. Since 1976, the World Championships have become “open”, ie. both amateurs and professionals take part in them.

The history of ice hockey
The history of ice hockey is one of the most contested of all sports.Traditionally, the birthplace of hockey has been Montreal (although more recent research points to the primacy of Kingston, Ontario or Windsor, Nova Scotia). However, some 16th-century Dutch paintings also depict a multitude of people playing a hockey-like game on a frozen canal. But despite this, Canada is still considered the birthplace of modern ice hockey.
When Great Britain conquered Canada from France in 1763, the soldiers brought field hockey with them to this land.As Canadian winters are very harsh and long, winter sports have always been welcomed in this area. By attaching cheese cutters to their boots, Canadians played the game on frozen rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. In Nova Scotia and Virginia, there are old paintings of people playing hockey.
On March 3, 1875, the first ice hockey match was held at the Victoria rink in Montreal, the information about which was recorded in the Montreal Gazette. Each of the teams consisted of nine people. They played with a wooden puck, and the protective gear was borrowed from baseball. For the first time, a hockey goal was installed on the ice.
In 1877, several students at McGill University in Montreal invented the first seven rules of ice hockey. In 1879, a rubber washer was made. After some time, the game became so popular that in 1883 it was presented at the annual Montreal Winter Carnival. In 1885, the Amateur Hockey Association was founded in Montreal.
The rules of the game of hockey were improved, streamlined and published in 1886. According to them, the number of field players decreased from nine to seven, there were a goalkeeper, front and rear defenders, a center and two forwards on the ice, and in front of the entire width of the field there was a rover (English rover – a tramp) – the strongest hockey player who throws the washers the best. … The team played the whole match in the same composition, and by the end of the game the athletes literally crawled on the ice from fatigue, because only the player who was injured was allowed to replace (and then in the last period and only with the consent of the opponents). In the same year, the first international meeting between the Canadian and English teams was held.
In 1890, a four-team championship was held in Ontario. Indoor skating rinks with natural ice soon appeared. To prevent it from melting, narrow slots were cut in the walls and roofs for cold air to enter. The first artificial ice rink was built in Montreal in 1899.
The game of hockey became so popular that in 1893 the Governor-General of Canada, Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley, bought for 10 guineas a cup that looked like an inverted pyramid of silver rings to present to the champion of the country. This is how the legendary trophy appeared – the Stanley Cup. At first, amateurs fought for him, and since 1910 – and professionals. Since 1927, the Stanley Cup has been contested by the National Hockey League teams.
In 1900, a net appeared on the gate. Thanks to this new product, the debate about whether a goal is scored or not has stopped. The judge’s metal whistle, sticking to his lips from the cold, was replaced by a bell, and soon a plastic whistle. At the same time, a throw-in of the puck was introduced (earlier the referee pushed the opponents’ sticks with his hands to the puck lying on the ice and, blowing a whistle, drove off to the side so as not to get hit with the stick).
The first professional ice hockey team was formed in Canada in 1904. In the same year, hockey players switched to a new game system – “six by six”. The standard size of the site was set – 56 × 26 m, which has changed little since then. Four seasons later, there was a complete division into professionals and amateurs. For the latter, the Allan Cup was established, which has been played since 1908. Its owners subsequently represented Canada at the World Championships.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Europeans became interested in Canadian hockey.A congress in Paris in 1908 founded the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which originally united four countries – Belgium, France, Great Britain and Switzerland. In 1914, the Canadian Hockey Association (KAHA) was formed, and in 1920 it became a member of the International Federation.
To increase the entertainment and speed of the game, in 1910, the replacement of athletes was allowed. In the same year, the National Hockey Association arose, and the famous National Hockey League (NHL) appeared only in 1917.
Many innovations belong to the Patrick brothers hockey players – James, Craig and Lester (the latter became a famous hockey figure). On their initiative, the players were assigned numbers, points were awarded not only for goals, but also for assists (goal-plus-pass system), hockey players were allowed to pass the puck forward, and goalkeepers were allowed to take their skates off the ice. The game has since gone on to last three periods of 20 minutes each.
In 1911, the IIHF officially approved the Canadian rules for the game of ice hockey, and in 1920 the first world championship took place. In 1929, goalkeeper Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons donned the mask for the first time. In 1934, a free throw – a bullet was legalized. In 1945, multicolored lanterns were installed behind the gates for more accurate accounting of the goals scored (“red” means a goal, “green” – no goal has been scored). In the same year, a triple refereeing was introduced: the head referee and two assistants (linesmen). In 1946, the system of judges’ gestures was legalized for specific violations of the rules.
In 1920, the first meeting took place in an official tournament – at the Olympic Games – between the teams of the Old and New Worlds.Canadians have reaffirmed their glory as the strongest hockey power in the world. The Canadians also won the Olympic tournaments (at the same time considered world championships) in 1924 and 1928.
Hockey in the USSR and Russia. The birthday of hockey in Russia and in the USSR as a whole is December 22, 1946, when the first matches of the first USSR ice hockey championship were played in Moscow, Leningrad, Riga, Kaunas and Arkhangelsk.
In 1954, Soviet hockey players made their debut at the world championships and immediately took a leading position in world hockey.Already the first meeting with the Canadians ended with the victory of the Soviet athletes – 7: 2. This victory brought the USSR national team the first world title.
In the 1990s, a lack of stability prompted many top players to seek their fortune in wealthy foreign clubs. Domestic hockey has lost its stars, and the only consolation is the fact that most of them did not get lost in someone else’s hockey, but, on the contrary, are leaders, including in NHL clubs, and thereby support the high brand of the Russian hockey school.
During this period, the Russian national team, having won the 1993 World Cup, remained without medals for a long time. And only recently, the Russian team began to regain its former strength. And if at the 2007 World Championship in Moscow the Russians stumbled in the semifinals, then in 2008, the year of the official 100th anniversary of hockey, they regained the title of world champions, beating the Canadians in Quebec, and on May 10, 2009, the Russian national team confirmed their title by beating the Canadian team in the final of the 2009 World Cup, held in Bern (Switzerland), with a score of 2: 1.However, despite the positive trend on February 24, 2010 in the quarterfinal match of the Olympic hockey tournament, the Russian team lost to the Canadians 3: 7. In 2010, at the next world championship, the Russian national team took revenge for the defeat at the Olympic Games, beating the Canadian national team with a score of 5: 2 in the quarterfinals (it is noteworthy that during the game the Russians were leading 4: 0), but not managed to keep the world title, losing in the final to the Czech national team with a score of 2: 1. In 2011, Russia lost 4: 7 to the Czechs and was left without medals for the first time in five years.Finns took gold medals, Swedes won silver, Czechs took third place.

History of field hockey
Did you know that field hockey is one of the oldest sports games known to mankind? This is not a joke – the first mention of this game in an antique fresco dates back to 510 BC. At the moment, an image in which two players compete in possession of the ball using special horns is kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Greece in Athens. In general, according to many researchers, the ancestors of ball hockey in the modern version are French shepherds who whiled away the time for a cattle walk. Despite this, the first matches were played in England in the middle of the 19th century. Until 1924, this sport remained an amateur, until the International Field Hockey Federation was founded in Paris.
Today in many countries field hockey is the second most popular sport after football. The recognized leaders of the international rating of national teams in this type of hockey are the teams of Argentina, Australia, Germany and Belgium in the men’s standings and the teams of the Netherlands, Argentina and the United Kingdom in the womens. The field hockey tickets, which you can buy or sell on StubHub, will help you get to the matches with the participation of the strongest national teams.
Field hockey in Russia
Russian field hockey players have repeatedly made attempts to attract the attention of the state to their sport since 1912, but the efforts of the athletes have not been crowned with success. The development of this sport began in the Soviet Union only since the 70s of the last century, when the holding of regular all-Union championships was approved. This sport was included in the program of the Olympic Games back in 1908, however, one of the most powerful incentives for the development of domestic field hockey was the inclusion of women’s hockey in the program of the XXII Olympic Games in 1980 in Moscow. Then, both the men’s and women’s teams took third place in the team competition. Further achievements of our team, of course, include the third place in the women’s team at the 1981 World Championship in Buenos Aires and the second at the 1984 European Championship, as well as silver medals for the men’s team at the 1983 European Championship. In recent years, the Russian national bandy team has been consistently ranked in the ranking of the International Hockey Association in the region of 20 places. If you are not interested in bandy, pay attention to the numerous sporting events on our portal. Are you a fan of traditional ice hockey? In this case, tickets for hockey matches at the famous ice arenas of the world are already waiting for you on StubHub!
Ice hockey – OLYMPS.RU
Ice hockey is a sports game, a subspecies of hockey, consisting in a confrontation between two teams, which, passing the puck with their clubs, strive to throw it the most times into the opponent’s goal and not let it into their own.The team that scores the most goals into the opponent’s goal wins.

Hockey rink
Hockey rink dimensions
In the IIHF and NHL rules, the dimensions of the hockey rink are different.
According to the IIHF rules, the site should preferably be 58 × 30 meters in size; in official competitions under the auspices of the IIHF, deviations from this size are allowed up to 61 m in length and up to 27 m in width; for other competitions, the minimum size of the area is 40 × 20 meters.
The NHL rules dictate a court size of 200 feet x 85 feet.e. 60.96 x 25.90 meters. In the NHL, it is believed that smaller sizes contribute to power struggles, shots on goal, playing at the boards, where there are many hot martial arts, skirmishes and fights.
The corners of the court must be rounded with an arc of a circle with a radius of 7 m to 8.5 m according to the IIHF rules and 28 feet (8.53 m) in the NHL.
Boards
The site must be surrounded by plastic or wooden boards with a height of not less than 1 m and not more than 1.22 m above the level of the ice surface. Protective glass must be installed on the front sides of the site, and a protective net should be installed over the glass, preventing the puck from flying out of the site and, as a result, getting into the audience. In the middle part of the side board, there are two doors that open inward, intended for players to enter the court. Two more doors are located opposite: on the penalty bench.
Marking
End lines were drawn 3-4 m from the sides. At 17.23 m from the goal line – the blue lines of the zones, thanks to which the court is divided into 3 zones: the central zone and two zones of the opponents. In the center of the field there is a red line dividing the court in half, and a throw-in point located in the middle of the red line.Throw-in points with a throw-in zone with a radius of 4.5 m are drawn on both sides of the goal at a distance of 6 m.
Penalty Bench
Each hockey rink is equipped with two benches for penalized players. Each bench must be designed for a minimum of 5 players. The minimum bench length is 4 meters and the width is 1.5 meters.
Gate
Gate structure:
- Width – 1.83 m (6 ft)
- Height – 1.22 m (4 ft)
- Outside diameter of racks – 5 cm
Hockey goals are fixed on pins for which holes are drilled in the ice. This technology provides a fairly strong fixation of the goal on the surface of the court, but at the same time, the goal can be moved so that a player colliding with them does not get injured. From the center of the goal line with a radius of 1.8 m, the goal area is usually drawn:
- in Russia, the length of the front line of the goal area – 3.6 m
- in the NHL – 2.44 m
Washer
Standard Hockey Puck
Washer should be made of vulcanized rubber or other IIHF approved material and should be mostly black in color.
Washer dimensions:
Diameter: 7.62 cm
Thickness: 2.54 cm
Weight: 170 g.
Game duration
An ice hockey match consists of three periods of 20 minutes of net time. The breaks between periods are 15 minutes. In case of a tie at the end of three periods, additional time (overtime) may be assigned. In the event of a draw at the end of overtime, free throws (shootouts) are made. The need for overtime, as well as its duration, the need for and the number of free throws are discussed separately in the tournament regulations.
Lineups
Usually 20-25 players from one team come to the match. The minimum and maximum number of players is determined by the tournament regulations.
There must be six players on the field at the same time on the side of one team: five field players and one goalkeeper. It is allowed to replace the goalkeeper with the sixth field player. Changes of players are possible both during pauses during the stoppage of the game time, and directly during the game.
During the overtime, there are five players on the court (the goalkeeper and four field players).
Judges
A hockey match is served by a refereeing team consisting of three or four referees. One or two referees (depending on the rules of the tournament) are called the head judges, the other two are the head referee’s assistants, or linesmen. The duties of the chief referee include tracking violations of the rules, fixing a goal (goals). Assistants to the referee are responsible for tracking offside positions, puck throws, numerical violations, and puck throw-ins.
In addition to the referees, there is an off-court refereeing team in the field for every match. It includes:
two goal judges
one secretary
one timekeeper
one informant judge
one replay judge
two penalty box judges
two recorder judges
Fines
In ice hockey, players are allowed to use the so-called power wrestling (in women’s ice hockey, power wrestling is prohibited).Power wrestling provides for a contact game, a body-to-body game. However, not all contact play is permitted. It is forbidden to step, hold an opponent with his hands, hold a stick, play with a high stick, hit with his hands, elbows, and the like.
The player who violated the rules is removed from the court for a specified time. Removal is disciplinary (for 10 minutes or until the end of the match), when another player is sent off instead of the sent off, or as usual (for 2 minutes, 2 + 2 minutes, or – less often, in case of injury – for 5 minutes), when the number of players on the court decreases. The deletion time is calculated according to the net playing time. The sent off player spends the time of sending off on the penalty box. For some violations (for example, violation of the numerical strength) the team as a whole is punished, any of the players is serving a fine. If the team has less than three field players (+ goalkeeper), then the sent off serves a penalty, but is replaced by another player.
If the opposing team scored a goal, then one sent off player (who has less time left) returns to the court ahead of schedule. This rule does not apply if the player has been penalized with a five minute or match penalty.
If the goalkeeper is sent off, another field player must serve the penalty in his place.
In the event that a violation of the rules occurred against a player who went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, then a free throw (bullet) may be awarded by the head referee. The free throw is taken by one skater of the injured team against the goalkeeper of the offending team. If a player goes one-on-one with an empty goal (the goalkeeper is replaced by a field player) and the rules are violated against him, the referee will score a goal, even if the puck has not been in the goal.
In the event that the rules were violated against the injured team, but the puck remained under their control, a deferred penalty will be imposed. The referee raises one hand vertically upward, and the other brings the whistle to his lips and waits for the puck to touch the puck with the stick of any of the players of the offending team. During a delayed penalty, the injured team’s goalkeeper can leave the goal empty, change to an additional skater, which will give his team a numerical advantage. As soon as the offending team gains possession of the puck (sometimes even a touch is counted), the whistle sounds and the offender is sent off.In case of implementation of the deferred penalty, there is no removal, penalty minutes are not recorded in the game protocol.
