The All-Star Advantage: How Past Experience Shapes the Competition
Returning to Face Off as an all-star contestant brings both benefits and challenges. These artists have already proven their skills in previous seasons, but now they must push themselves even further to stand out among a field of proven talents. How does their past experience on the show influence their approach to challenges?
Many returning artists have likely honed their skills since their original appearances, working in the industry and refining their techniques. This could lead to even more impressive and polished creations than we’ve seen in previous seasons. Additionally, familiarity with the show’s format and challenges may allow contestants to work more efficiently and strategically under pressure.
Team Dynamics: The Game-Changing Element of Season 11
One of the most intriguing aspects of Face Off: All-Stars is the team format. Pairing artists who have previously competed as individuals adds a new layer of complexity to the competition. How will these duos navigate creative differences and combine their unique styles?
Effective teamwork could lead to truly extraordinary creations, as artists pool their strengths and compensate for each other’s weaknesses. Conversely, personality clashes or conflicting visions could spell disaster for some teams. Viewers can expect to see not only incredible makeup artistry but also the drama and excitement of interpersonal dynamics at play.
Potential Team Strategies
- Division of labor based on individual strengths
- Collaborative brainstorming to generate innovative concepts
- Alternating leadership roles for different challenges
- Developing a cohesive artistic style that blends both artists’ approaches
Judging the All-Stars: Raising the Bar for Excellence
With such a talented pool of contestants, the judges face the daunting task of evaluating work at an extremely high level. Returning to the judges’ panel are industry veterans Ve Neill, Glenn Hetrick, and Neville Page. Their expertise and discerning eyes will be put to the test as they critique the all-stars’ creations.
How will the judging criteria evolve to match the elevated skill level of the contestants? Viewers can expect even more nuanced and detailed feedback, focusing on the finest points of technique and artistry. The judges may also place increased emphasis on originality and innovation, challenging the all-stars to push beyond their previous accomplishments and create truly groundbreaking designs.
Green Screen Innovation: A New Dimension to Face Off Challenges
Season 11 introduces an exciting new element to the Face Off challenges: green screen technology. This addition opens up a world of possibilities for the contestants to create even more immersive and fantastical creatures and characters. How will the incorporation of green screen tech change the way artists approach their designs?
The use of green screen may encourage artists to think beyond the physical limitations of practical effects, considering how their creations will interact with digital environments. This could lead to more ambitious and imaginative concepts, as well as new techniques for blending practical and digital effects seamlessly.
Potential Applications of Green Screen Technology
- Creating otherworldly environments for alien creatures
- Enhancing character designs with digital elements
- Simulating complex action sequences or transformations
- Bringing fantasy and science fiction concepts to life in new ways
From Face Off to Hollywood: Success Stories of Past Contestants
As Face Off enters its 11th season, it’s worth noting the impact the show has had on the careers of its past contestants. Many former Face Off artists have gone on to work on major film and television productions, showcasing the real-world value of the skills honed during the competition. Here are some notable success stories:
- Jason Milani (Season 3): Won two primetime Emmys for his work on Saturday Night Live’s makeup team
- Wayne Anderson (Season 4): Worked on popular projects like Stranger Things, It, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Ghostbusters, and The Predator
- Laura Dandridge (Season 5 winner): Contributed to blockbuster films such as Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Thor: Ragnarok, and Captain America: Civil War
These success stories demonstrate the caliber of talent that Face Off attracts and nurtures. They also raise the stakes for the all-star contestants, who are likely aiming to leverage their return to the show into even greater career opportunities.
The Legacy of Face Off: Impact on the Special Effects Industry
As Face Off continues to captivate audiences and showcase incredible talent, it’s worth considering the show’s broader impact on the special effects makeup industry. Has the popularity of Face Off influenced trends in film and television makeup? Has it inspired a new generation of artists to pursue careers in special effects?
The show has undoubtedly raised public awareness of the artistry and technical skill involved in creating memorable characters and creatures for screen. This increased appreciation may have contributed to a greater emphasis on practical effects in recent years, even as CGI technology continues to advance.
Moreover, Face Off has provided a platform for emerging artists to gain exposure and make industry connections. The show’s challenges often mirror real-world production scenarios, giving contestants valuable experience that translates directly to professional work.
Face Off’s Contributions to the Industry
- Showcasing the creative process behind special effects makeup
- Providing a launching pad for new talent in the field
- Inspiring innovation and pushing the boundaries of practical effects
- Fostering a community of artists and encouraging collaboration
As Face Off: All-Stars brings together some of the most talented artists from the show’s history, it not only celebrates the legacy of the series but also points towards an exciting future for special effects makeup artistry. The combination of experienced contestants, innovative challenges, and the incorporation of new technologies promises to make Season 11 a landmark event for fans and industry professionals alike.

Battle Royale’ Will Be a Final All-Star Season — Relive the Best Transformations (PHOTOS)
The bad news first: Syfy’s beloved Face Off is coming back for its final season in June. The good news? Season 13’s Face Off: Battle Royale looks to be its best yet!
TV Insider can reveal exclusively that the series, featuring competing special effects makeup artists, will kick off on June 5 at 9/8c. And as a tribute to fans, this will be an All-Star season, focusing solely on fan-favorite artists from past seasons as they are paired against one another for the first time ever!
The teams will battle it out each week, with two contestants eliminated every other episode. Returning as host for the 13th time is McKenzie Westmore, an actress — she played Robert De Niro’s daughter in Raging Bull and starred in NBC’s Passions — who created her own cosmetic line, Westmore Beauty.
In the spirit of nostalgia, Syfy is also updating viewers on some of their past contestants’ successes. You’ve got Season 3’s Jason Milani, who won two primetime Emmys for his work on the Saturday Night Live‘s makeup team. Also, Season 4’s Wayne Anderson is all over TV and film (he’s worked on Stranger Things, It, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Ghostbusters and The Predator). Laura Dandridge, winner of Season 5, recently worked on Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Thor: Ragnarok, and Captain America: Civil War. And frequent guest judge Eryn Krueger Mekash won 6 primetime Emmys for her work on American Horror Story and Feud, among others.

Ocean, Monmouth All-Stars Face Off

WEST LONG BRANCH – Chase Stephensen, clutching an award, was surrounded by family and friends.
The recent Lacey Township High School graduate received hugs, handshakes and kisses at midfield after being named the Defensive Most Valuable Player of the game for the Ocean County All-Stars after their 17-8 loss to the Monmouth County All-Stars in the 40th annual All-Shore Gridiron Classic at Shore Regional.
“The award means I hopefully will have a lot of success when I play in college,” said Stephensen, who will play for Kutztown University. “The rest of the defense helped me a lot. My coaches put me in the right spots. The biggest things were to play in my last high school game in front of my family and friends, put on big hits and do my job.”
Stephensen played strong safety for Ocean.
“I had to cover the other team’s tight end,” he said.
With 3:14 left in the first half, Stephensen recovered a fumble at the Ocean 1-yard line.
“Nick Page (of Toms River South) knocked the ball loose and it was on the ground,” Stephensen said. “I saw it on the ground. A couple of guys dove for the ball and I pounced on it.”
Stephensen pounced on his chance to play for Kutztown.
“I talked to a couple of guys and they enjoyed it there,” he said. “They won their conference last year. When I visited the school, it felt like home to me. I went to a couple of camps there and I felt it was what college should feel like.”
Stephensen, a 6-foot, 215-pounder, played three years of varsity ball for the Lions under coach Lou Vircillo.
“It’s definitely sad to wear the Lacey helmet for the last time,” he said. “I have played football in Lacey since the age of seven, beginning in Pop Warner. I am excited for what’s ahead – college football. It was a privilege for me to play for Lacey and to play in this game.”

Ocean coach L.J. Clark, the Lakewood Piners’ mentor, said he enjoyed working with Stephensen, recruited as a hybrid linebacker-safety.
“He’s tough,” Clark said. “He brings it in every game. I saw him play in (Shore Conference) Class B South during the regular season last fall and he brings his hard hat to work. It was a pleasure to coach him this week. He’s a great kid. He’s a super competitor.”
Adi Palmer, who starred for Lakewood, was named Ocean’s Offensive Most Valuable Player after catching five passes for 55 yards. Marlboro running back Cameron Caorsi was honored as Monmouth’s Offensive Most Valuable Player after rushing for a Classic single-game record 179 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries, turning the artificial surface of Robert E. Feeney Field into a greyhound track. Caorsi will attend Brookdale Community College, which does not have a football team.
Keyport player Zach Frick was named Monmouth’s Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Monmouth, which led the game from start to finish, took a 6-0 lead with 1:49 left in the first quarter when running back Paul Reed of Asbury Park caught a 5-yard screen pass on the left sideline from St. John Vianney’s Matt DeGennaro. Freehold Township’s Tyler Schulman kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead after Monmouth drove 60 yards on 12 plays.
Schulman pushed the lead to 10-0 with a 29-yard field goal with 8:59 to go in the first half. Caorsi made it 16-0 with 10:44 left in the third quarter, scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run; Schulman’s PAT put Monmouth up 17-0.
Ocean sliced its deficit to 17-6 with 4:12 to go in the game when Anthony Costanza of Brick Township tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Frey of Point Pleasant Boro. Costanza connected on a pass to Central Regional’s Mike Bickford for the two-point conversion, producing the final score.
GRID GOSSIP: Caorsi broke the record of 161 yards set by Joe (The Jet) Henderson of Freehold in 1986.
Monmouth, which leads the series 21-18-1, snapped Ocean’s three-game winning streak.
Former Brick Township assistant coach Bob Spada and ex-Matawan mentor Butch Britton were inducted into the Shore Coaches Football Foundation Hall of Fame during a halftime ceremony. Spada was a part of 18 Brick championships. The SCFC presented the game.
The game’s public address announcer was Tommy Farrell, a former Monsignor Donovan (now Donovan Catholic) player.
“I can’t believe it’s been four years since I played in the same game and served as a captain for Ocean County,” the former Griffin said on his Facebook page.
Farrell’s father, Tom, is the superintendent of the Shore Regional High School District. He played and coached football for the Griffins. He coached football at New Egypt where he served as principal before becoming a Shore administrator. Young Farrell played football for the Griffins.
Carol Frank Brown and her husband, Donovan Brown, hosted a fettuccine dinner at their Brick home during the several days of practice prior to the game. It was for Brick players and their Ocean County teammates.
“It was so much fun to see them together as friends and not as foes!” Frank Brown said on her Facebook page. “Lots of laughs!! Go Ocean!!!”
Ocean assistant coach Len Zdanowicz Jr., the Brick Green Dragons’ mentor, participated in his sixth Classic with six of his players.
Zdanowicz Jr. played center for Ocean, representing the Green Dragons in 1990.
“I look back on the numerous friendships that I made with my ‘sworn enemies’ from neighboring towns and feel so grateful for the opportunity given to me by my coaches,” he said. “Thank you coach Wolf (Warren Wolf, then Brick’s head coach), Jim Calabro and Kevin Campbell (Brick assistant coaches).”

90,000 Crosby and Ovechkin have graced the NHL hockey
NHL.com originally planned to address the confrontation that has become the epitome of the NHL in the last 10 years, before the start of the current regular season. Sydney Crosby from Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Alexander Ovechkin from Washington Capitals – what could be more exciting?
Before this season, however, the two superstars have met face to face in the Stanley Cup only once. It happened in the 2009 playoffs, and that streak between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals became a real treat for hockey gourmets.
Now, looking forward to the second confrontation between Sid and Ovy in the playoffs, we bring to your attention a detailed material on the stellar careers of Ovechikn and Crosby.
Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin were in the spotlight. They are used to it and have been watched over their entire careers. But this time the scene was different – they were next to each other. It was their face-to-face confrontation in the fight for the Stanley Cup.
Key point.
“It felt,” said Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom.”It felt like they were competing with each other, trying to win the match for their teams.”
This is the second game of the Eastern Conference semifinals in the 2009 playoffs. “Pittsburgh Penguins” played against “Washington” and it was not only a rivalry between teams. It was a confrontation between the stars. The first and so far the only “Ovi and Sid Show” in the cup performance.
Opposites attract. This is what the whole world was watching.
Crosby is a Canadian, center forward, a creator with amazing hands that can do things that Gretzky and Lemieux would envy.
Ovechkin – from Russia, right wing, who seems to be playing, rolling and throwing at a completely different level compared to the others. His motor never loses its rhythm and does not require repair, and makes you remember the times of Gordie Howe. True, Ovechkin’s play is distinguished by great brilliance and charisma.
Both broke into the NHL at the same time, each top pick (Ovechkin in 2004, Crosby in 2005). They debuted in the league on the same day – October 5, 2005. It was 10 years ago on Monday.
They competed even before the NHL, played against each other on the international stage, including in the 2005 World Youth Championship final, when Crosby and Canada won 6-1.
Their competition intensified in the early years in the NHL, both strived to be the best, and the achievements of the opponent (Ovechkin won the Calder Prize in 2006, Crosby – the Hart and Art Ross Prizes in 2007, Ovechkin – the Hart and Richard Rocket Prizes in 2008 and 2009) served them as motivation for further work on themselves.
And in 2009, in the semifinals of the Eastern Conference, especially in the second match, the degree of struggle rose to the maximum height and millions of fans began to demand continuation.
“At that time, the rivalry between our teams reached its climax, everyone was talking about it,” says Backstrom.
Washington won 4-3, but the score was in addition to what will then be remembered for the next 10 years.
Ovechkin and Crosby have scored three goals each – this has not happened in the playoffs for 13 years. In 1996, Trevor Linden of the Vancouver Canucks and Joe Sakik of the Colorado Avalanche succeeded. In total, in the entire history of the NHL, two hat-tricks in one playoff game happened only 4 times. Since Crosby and Ovechkin, no one has yet been able to repeat this.
“We got each other turned on in that match,” Crosby said.
Crosby scored first, converting the majority at 6:38 and opening the score. Ovechkin equalized him at 2:18 in the second period. Crosby chalked up the second goal at 10:57 and put Pittsburgh ahead again.
“When Sidney scored the second goal, Ovi didn’t want to be outdone,” Backstrom recalls. “He thought he needed to score, and we need to win the match.”
At 4:48, David Steckel scores Washington’s second goal.
Ovechkin scores twice in less than 3 minutes in the third period and the Capitals go 4-2. With 31 seconds before the final siren, Crosby converts the majority again and also scores a hat-trick. He is confident that if the match continued, he would score more.
“Two leaders have shown themselves,” Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin won the match, Crosby won the streak and then the Stanley Cup.
But the biggest winners were the fans who watched the rivalry of these hockey players that day and in the following days.
“It was good for hockey,” Backstrom said.
Two completely different superstars, who are distinguished by many things and unite even more, that day fully justified all the wildest hopes.
Below are 12 episodes, six per player in chronological order, that have had a significant impact on the careers of hockey players who have already inscribed their names in NHL history.
THE DAY WHICH WASHINGTON CHANGED
18-year-old and as always resolutely minded Ovechkin on the eve of the 2004 draft peppered Gleb Chistyakov, the Capitals’ Russian scout at the time, who will be number one – he or Evgeni Malkin … Chistyakov did not answer, which only provoked Ovechkin more, who flew to Railay on June 23, 4 days before the draft.
“I pestered him:” Well, okay, tell me, hint! “- Ovechkin recalls.” And he says he cannot tell me this. There was me and Malkin, both from Russia. When I saw the Russian scout take the stage, I thought: “What will happen now?”
Ovechkin did not know that “Washington” had already firmly decided to choose him. Ross Mahoney, director of scouting, saw no other option. Malkin went to number two in Pittsburgh.
“We had no doubts that we should take Ovechkin,” Mahoney said. “I have nothing against Malkin, but only Ovechkin existed for us.”
Ovechkin took the stage, shook hands with the Washington scouts and club leaders, put on a sweater and smiled. The owner, Ted Leonsis, felt his heart beating as he hugged the young man.
“He shook hands like a politician, it was nice,” Leonsis said. “There was nothing unusual about him. At the banquet after the draft, we were treated to cantaloupe, and he never tasted it and we never saw anyone eat it like that. He shook a thousand hands and talked to everyone. Everyone wanted to know. Who is this guy”.
PENGUIN RESCUE
In 2005, there was no controversy over who would be the 1st draft pick. The question was which team would get Sidney Crosby.
The answer became clear on July 22 during the lottery. On that day, the NHL and NHL PA ratified the collective bargaining agreement and officially ended the lockout that led to the loss of the 2004/05 season.
“I wasn’t nervous, rather looking forward and happy about what was about to happen,” Crosby said.
Pittsburgh won the lottery. Rumors spread quickly.
“I was at my grandmother’s and forgot who should pick first, I didn’t even think it would be Pittsburgh,” says Edmonton Oilers center-forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, then 13 years old.”It’s funny, but I usually forget where I was at one point or another, but I remember that I was at my grandmother’s that day. I remember that day because of Sydney.”
Pittsburgh selected Crosby as the No. 1 pick in Ottawa on July 30th. He was already considered the savior of the team, which was going through financial difficulties at the time. It was rumored that she might move.
Crosby made his debut against the New Jersey Devils. “Pittsburgh” lost 1: 5, but Crosby gave an assist to Mark Rekka. He finished that season with 39 goals and 63 assists (102 points). He finished 6th in the NHL in goals and 7th in assists, and came in second in the Calder Prize vote, beating Ovechkin ahead with 52 goals (3rd in the NHL) and 106 points (also 3rd place).
Crosby brought hope to the city, despite the fact that the season was not the best.
“In terms of maturity, he was not of this world,” Rekki said. “He only thought about how to become an NHL player. It was not his face that was written, it was read in his eyes, in his behavior. And he did it. He had a special aura. It was clear that he would become a great player. “
FROM RUSSIA TO WASHINGTON
The 2004/5 lockout dragged on until the summer and could even affect the 2005/6 season. Ovechkin signed a contact with Avangard Omsk in the Russian Super League. It had a termination clause with a deadline of July 20.
The lockout officially ended on July 22nd, but news of this came 9 days before the NHL / PA NHL agreement was signed.Capitals general manager George McPhee and Leonsis immediately contacted Ovechkin.
“The situation was such that I had to decide whether to leave for the NHL or stay in Russia,” says Ovechkin. “I promised Omsk that I would stay for one more season and this promise worried me. But when George and Ted called me and said that the lockout would end in 2-3 days, I met with the president of Avangard and said that I was dreaming play in the NHL “.
McPhee remembers how persistently Ovechkin wanted to start his NHL career, even though his parents were against it.
“I remember talking on the phone with Don Min, his agent at the time, with his staff, Ovi’s parents and translator. There were a lot of people there,” McPhee said. “I remember assuring his parents that we would look after him. He was 19 years old, he was going to North America. It scared them a little. I felt that the majority thought that he would be better in Russia. We didn’t understand what they were talking about, but Alex was very active and in the end he told everyone: “I’m going to the NHL.”And that’s all. “
That evening, Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Bryzgalov were looking for a fax to send the signed contracts to their NHL clubs. to the owner that I am leaving. We shook hands, I took my things and left. “
He came to Washington training camp and immediately made an impression.
” I went down to the locker room. At that time, Oli Kolzig was our goalkeeper, who won the Vezina Prize, “recalls Leonsis.”He said,” This is the greatest player I’ve ever seen. He has the strongest shot. “And this was only his first training session.”
It took Ovechkin one shift in the first game of the regular season to gain attention in the NHL. He used such a strong move against the Columbus Blue Jackets defender Radoslaw Sukha that the glass flew out of the frame and fell on the ice. Ovechkin scored 2 goals in that game and the Capitals won 3: 2.
“I have not seen anyone else also use forceful techniques, or that someone who tried to meet him also bounced off,” says McPhee.”He was constantly attacking, he could beat you, he could drive over you with a skating rink. I have not seen this. A bit like Lydros, but this is the only hockey player I can think of when I remember how Ovechkin broke into the NHL and how he played there. “.
“GOAL”
Ovechkin’s popularity was no match for the attention that Crosby received in the first half of their debut season. That all changed on January 16, 2006, when Ovechkin scored a GOAL against the Phoenix Coyotes.
“It got everyone’s attention,” Leonsis said.
“People began to respect me more,” says Ovechkin.
It all started very simple – the defender, “Washington” Brendan Witt sent the puck into the side, hoping to throw it out of the zone. The match was already drawing to a close and the Capitals were winning 5-1.
Ovechkin picked her up in the center of the site, picked up speed and crossed the blue line. And then all the fun began.
“I made a move to the center and fell,” Ovechkin said.”He faltered.”
Ovechkin began to move to the center as soon as he entered the right faceoff circle. Goalkeeper “Phoenix” Brian Boucher did not know if Ovechkin would throw from defender Paul Mara, but just in case he rolled out of the gate to meet him.
“I wanted to play aggressively against him so that he could not beat me with a shot from close range,” explained Boucher. “He pulled the puck through Mara.”
Ovechkin fell, rolled on his back on the ice through the left throw-in circle almost to the goal line.Boucher went so far out of the gate that he did not have time to return.
“I jumped, stretched out my arms, because I did not have time,” said Boucher. “I didn’t even realize he was on the back.”
Ovechkin rolled over in the fall, managed to somehow keep the puck on the stick and not lose sight of the goal. And then he managed to send her into the net with one hand.
“I only had time to think that he rolled across the entire area, and then:“ This cannot be! ”- said Boucher.“ You should not miss such pucks! ”But when I saw the replay, I thought:“ An incredible goal, incredible! ”
HISTORICAL SEASON
Ovechkin loves to talk about who helped him score 65 goals in 2007/8, when he became the first NHL player to cross 60 goals, behind Mario Lemieux (69) and Jaromir Jagr ( 62) (in the 1995/96 championship).
Ovechkin pays tribute to Bruce Boudreau, who then coached the team.
“He gave us freedom,” Ovechkin said.
He also praises his partners – Backstrem and Viktor Kozlov.
“They have incredible technology,” says Ovechkin.
Defender Mike Green knows he should be praising Ovechkin, not others. It was Ovechkin who helped the Capitals win first place in their division for the first time since 2000/01 and make the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
“It is difficult to single out one goal – there were a lot of them.I remember with what calmness and confidence he went on the ice and left the ice, “said Green, for whom that season was the 3rd in the company with Ovechkin (there were 10 of them).” If he played poker, he would not would never have lost. He did it. “
Green thinks that was when he first saw Ovechkin in all his glory.
” He always had a great shot, but then he shot as soon as he got the puck, “Green said. nobody could stop. He was on fire. It was then that he felt completely at ease.He was always technical, always decisive, but it was in that third season that he stopped worrying. It was already impossible to keep him. “
That season,“ Washington ”began to take the lead in his division – the team became its champion 4 times in a row. At the same time, Ovechkin tied his future with the“ Capitals. ”
HISTORICAL CONTRACT 8th NUMBER
McPhee at the very beginning of the summer of 2007 realized that the club should start negotiations with Ovechkin, for whom the next season was the last under the then standard three-year rookie contract.
“Alex flew to Paris, I flew to Paris. We spent a couple of days there discussing different things,” McPhee said. “We talked about contact for 5 years.”
Ovechkin was interested in a longer and “louder” contract, which would have come as a surprise to everyone. Number 8 is not ready for an inconspicuous and quiet life.
“At the beginning of the season, we met and he said:” If the contract is correct, I will sign it and spend my entire career at Washington, if you are ready to operate with such concepts, “- said McPhee.”Then I realized that I needed to meet with the owners.”
Negotiations took the next few months. McPhee said that Ovechkin was offered a 12-year contract worth about $ 100 million. Negotiations continued and as a result, on January 10, 2008, the parties agreed on a 13-year agreement for $ 124 million.
“Mrs. Ovechkina took me aside, looked me in the eye, put her hands on my shoulders and asked,” George, is this a good contract? “McPhee says.” I said, “This is a great contract.”She was pleased, Alex was happy and the deal was made. “
This was the most expensive contract in the history of the NHL. Crosby signed a 12-year contract on July 1, 2012 for 104 million dollars.
” He believed in the city, in the fans. A whole generation has already grown up here, completely immersed in hockey, “Leonsis said.” It all started from that moment, from that contract. From there it went: “If Alex feels good in Washington, then I feel good here too!”
VICTORY, PARADE, A DREAM FURNISHED
On August 7, 2009, Nathan McKinnon, who was to turn 14 in a month, walked out of his house onto a street already crowded with people. Then the population of the town of Cole Harbor (Nova Scotia) almost tripled: Crosby brought home the Stanley Cup on his 22nd birthday to celebrate his victory in the 2009 playoffs.
It is estimated that 75,000 people gathered in the city to see Crosby and take part in the parade. All residents of the city – about 25,000 – gathered at the “Cole Harbor Place” arena, where Crosby, and later McKinnon (now a Colorado Avalanche player) learned to play hockey.
“The parade was great and of course I had to see it,” McKinnon said.”It was great. Of course, Crosby was really cool for me at that age. Everyone went to see him.”
People even flew in from Alberta (a province on the other coast of Canada).
“I was a boy then and waving to him,” said McKinnon, who is now friends with Crosby. “I was on the street, there were people everywhere. We were happy.”
In that Stanley Cup, Crosby scored 31 points in 24 matches. He always dreamed of winning the Stanley Cup, but did not think about how to arrange a parade in his homeland on this matter. This is why everything turned out so great.
“You are supported by neighbors, acquaintances as you grow up, and you can thank them constantly. But arranging such an event for them is the best way to express your gratitude to them,” Crosby said.
GOLDEN BOY CANADA
Crosby got the puck after a pass from Jerome Iginla. There was no time to think, it was necessary to act on instincts. Crosby was in the right place. The result is an enchanting holiday for the whole of Canada.
Crosby’s goal in overtime in the final against the United States at the 2010 Olympics is comparable to that of Paul Henderson, who became a national hero 38 years ago thanks to his 72nd Super Series winning goal.
“Everyone was thinking,” Is this really true? Did Sidney Crosby score that winning goal? “- says captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning Steven Stamkos, who at 19 years old watched that game at home.” I jumped off the couch and thought how many people are now wondering: to think of something better than this: the golden boy scores the golden goal? ” Everything worked out great. “
Crosby remembers well what preceded this puck. Zach Parise equalized with 25 seconds remaining in the third period. In the locker room before overtime, Canada coach Mike Babcock and captain Scott Niedermeier were speechless.
“We thought we might have missed the only chance in our life,” Crosby said. “But when we went out on the ice again, we tuned in again and no one was going to sit in the trenches.”
Crosby fell into the arms of his teammates after scoring. But he had no idea what was happening outside.
“I didn’t realize it until I left the palace, to be honest,” he said. “You see the city, everything that happens in it. It was great. I just happened to be in the right place and Jerome made a great pass. Nothing special, just a quick puck and it had such incredible consequences.”
CLASSIC
New Year in 2011 in Pittsburgh turned out to be cold and rainy. On this day, the “Winter Classic” match was held at the “Heinz Field” stadium with a full house.Crosby vs. Ovechkin. New scene, new twist.
At the end of the second period, the confrontation could have ended. Stekel met Crosby with a forceful reception. Crosby managed to complete the match and take to the ice in the next game. But something was wrong.
“The morning (6th January 2011) after we flew to Montreal, we first started talking about something wrong with him,” said Pittsburgh coach Dan Bilesma. “We sent him to Pittsburgh after breakfast.”
Crosby was suspected of having a concussion. He missed 11 months.
“Everything was wonderful, and suddenly – one moment and you are already looking at everything from the outside,” Crosby said. “After that, I began to accept with greater gratitude everything that I have.”
Crosby only came out on the ice on November 21 the following season.
BETTER THAN MARIO’S RETURN
On November 21, 2011, 18,571 people who came to the Consol Energy Center were given signs that read: “Welcome back, Sid!” Only memorable moments with his participation were shown on the scoreboard before the game.
It was Crosby’s day, his first game since January 5th. Everyone was talking about it. Pittsburgh played against the New York Islanders.
“I remember the hype,” said Bilesma. “I haven’t seen anything like this in a regular season game, especially in November.”
Crosby scored two goals and scored 4 points in that match. The Penguins won 5-0.
“I’ve never seen anyone play at this level,” Bilesma said. “We had two players who never played Crosby. This is James Neal and Steve Sullivan. I remember their reaction after the game. In the end, they turned into spectators. They were amazed and stunned by what they saw. ”
Islanders center John Tavares likened Crosby’s performance to that of Mario Lemieux when he returned to hockey after a six-month absence and scored three points against the Toronto Maple Leafs on December 27, 2000.
“Crosby did it all,” Tavares said. “From the first throw-in, you could see his attitude. He was charged to fight and it was noticeable. The first goal was great. He went round in a wide arc of our defender and sent the puck into the corner with an uncomfortable hand. “
Crosby played 8 matches and again suffered a concussion. This time he missed 3 and a half months and returned on March 15.
OVECHKIN IN SOCHI
Ovechkin loves and is proud of Russia and his national team, he has put off his summer vacation 9 times in 10 seasons in the NHL to play in the World Cup.
“He understands what his role is,” Leonsis said.
That is why the Sochi Olympics were so important to him. It was his tournament. The country’s most popular athlete has become the face of the most expensive and luxurious Olympic Games.
“He is perhaps the second most popular person in the country,” said Washington center forward Yevgeny Kuznetsov. “Putin is the first, Alex is the second. Everyone wants to be like him.”
Ovechkin’s popularity fueled the excitement around the Games. He became not only the ambassador of the Olympics, but the first Russian to carry the Olympic torch after it was solemnly lit on the ruins of the Temple of Hera in Greek Olympia on September 29, 2013.
“A great honor,” said Ovechkin. “I love my country, I had a unique opportunity and I was going to take advantage of it at all costs. The club gave the go-ahead. I was the first in the country to carry a torch. It’s incredible.”
Five months later, a frustrated Ovechkin returned to Washington without a medal. The Olympics, which was supposed to mark the return of Russia to the top of international hockey, ended in failure.
Russia lost to the Finns in the quarterfinals. After 4 days, Crosby won gold with the Canadian national team.
Ovechkin, like all his partners, could not cope with the tension and scored only 1 goal. The pain remains, but a new way of looking at things has appeared.
“You are growing, you are going forward,” he said. “I know the fans, the people, everyone was disappointed. But it’s over and is in the past.”
St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko was in the national team and knows how upset it was. But he left Sochi with a feeling of even deeper respect for Ovechkin.
“I went there thinking that he had already achieved a lot in the NHL, that he could be arrogant, but when he spoke to me, he was a normal guy,” Tarasenko said. “It meant a lot. It’s great when you become successful, but remain the same person as before. Everyone respects these people and Alex is one of them. He helps everyone.”
He simply could not help Russia as Crosby helped Canada.
CAPTAIN CANADA SECOND GOLD
It’s been 4 years since Crosby’s goal made Canadians Olympic champions in Vancouver. In Sochi, Crosby was already the captain.
He didn’t have to shine in overtime, he didn’t have to perform feats. Crosby was stable, reliable, professional. He was the leader of the team that dominated the Olympic tournament.
In 6 matches, the Canadians conceded 3 goals, never allowed their opponents to score more than 22 shots per game. Crosby’s three performance points meant little. He scored his only goal in the second period of the final game against Sweden, which ended with a score of 3: 0.
“He won. That’s what we went for,” said team coach Mike Babcock. “Wouldn’t it be better if he scored 12 points, but we lost? We didn’t go there for that. We went there to win. This team dominated like no other, and he played an important role in it. He won.”
Crosby wants people to remember him as a winner when he ends his career. Ovechkin also strives for this. This means that the confrontation continues, although it has slightly changed in character.
Crosby and Ovechkin are legendary hockey players who compete against each other for their teams and themselves. It doesn’t matter how this confrontation ends, no matter when it ends – there will always be a connection between them.
Ovi and Sid. Sid and Ovi. 10 years have passed and everything continues. Everything is in the black.
“I don’t know if there will ever be something like this,” Ovechkin said.
A smart gift from Dima Bilan and the most unexpected pasture: a new issue of “Boys” shock
Participants of the show “Boys”
The new week for “boys” began with a conversation with a psychologist. The specialist was supposed to help the girls to reveal their creative abilities. As it turned out, in the past, many participants dreamed of a successful career, but because of the negativity from society, they abandoned these plans. So, Anastasia Petrova wanted to become a photographer. She even went to school, but quickly gave up.
“They told me there that I had no talent, and in the end I believed it. And I always really liked taking pictures, I would like to do it. There wasn’t a day when I didn’t regret that I left the school, ”Petruha shared her feelings.
However, not all “boys” revealed themselves during a conversation with a psychologist. So, Bella and Angelica all by their appearance showed how bored they were. Because of this strange behavior, the other students of the “Lady’s School” took offense at the girls.
Anastasia turned out to be the leader this week, but Bella, on the contrary, trudged along at the end of
. As a result, the new week was devoted to the disclosure of artistic abilities and the preparation of creative numbers. The girls met with Lyubov Uspenskaya and the famous blogger Oleg Romanenko. The celebrity guests helped the “boys” to reveal their talents, and as a result, each came up with a unique idea for performing on the big stage.
do not miss Laura Lukina: “When they ask if there are any actresses in“ Boys ”, I answer: you can’t play that.”
So, Natalia Goncharova performed a musical number on the stage. Since childhood, the girl loved to sing, but at one time she had to give up performing. “I studied at the music department. One day I came to class with pink hair, and the teacher cut it off for me.After that I gave up music. I haven’t performed for five years, but now I am glad that I have returned to creativity, ”the girl admitted.
Natalia Goncharova showed good results this week
But Bella Kuznetsova was able to cope with her biggest fear – the fear of dogs. She prepared a room with a trained pet. Here are just the marks from the judges were not the highest.
Ksenia Prokofieva prepared a heartfelt monologue about relationships with parents. The girl cried, but still shared her feelings. Her work moved many members of the jury, but not Lina Arifulina. “You were too in the moment. As an actor on stage, you have to be above the situation. You must show the situation from above and wider, ”Arifulina is sure.
Most of all the jury liked the number of Anastasia Petrova. The girl worked with an equilibrist for several days and eventually presented a full-fledged circus performance. All members of the jury, including Dima Bilan, Viktor Drobysh and Lina Arifulina, gave Anastasia the highest marks.
It was Petrova who became the winner of the creative competition. The jury also noted the numbers of Natalia Goncharova and Ekaterina Vanysheva. The latter received two gifts from Dima Bilan at once: a new button accordion and participation in the filming of the video. But Goncharova Bilan presented a recording of a solo composition in the studio.
Of course, the situation on the pasture after such a difficult week was especially tense. Laura Albertovna did not hand over the black ribbon, believing that all the girls showed themselves and took a step forward. But the white ribbon first went to Goncharova. The girl had long dreamed of a reward, so she was very happy. However, the teachers immediately announced that Natalya should leave the project. “You are already a lady. You learned everything, the project changed you. We think it’s time for you to move on, ”concluded Laura Albertovna.
This decision shocked other girls, because many of them considered Natalia the main contender for victory in the season. Now there are six girls left, and no less difficult tests await them ahead.

US Rally: Battlefield – Minnesota
Donald Trump called himself “the wall that protects the American dream from chaos,” and Joe Biden again blamed the current head of the White House for the high death rate of US residents from the coronavirus.Republican and Democratic presidential candidates held campaign rallies in Minnesota.
Meeting point – Minnesota. Both presidential candidates flew there at the same time: Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden. Minnesota traditionally votes for Democrats, so Biden is calm.
From the plane, he went to the carpenters’ union – to promise generous rewards for the hard work of the workers if he won the elections in November. In his speech, Biden again hit one point – he accused Trump of the wrong, in his opinion, actions to combat the coronavirus in the States.
“Trump brought the United States to a severe crisis. How many lives have already been lost through his fault! But he knew about the seriousness of the viral threat, this is confirmed by journalist Bob Woodward in his book” Rage. “Tragedy could have been avoided if not for negligence and selfishness Trump, who thinks not about the Americans, but only about his re-election, “the Democratic candidate is sure.
Trump – in his manner: energetic and active, flirting with voters, whose votes in Minnesota are extremely important to him.In 2016, he lost in this state to Hillary Clinton. And now, according to opinion polls, Biden is overtaking him, for whom Trump does not skimp on nicknames and even arranged a vote during his speech: “Slow Joe” or “Sleepy Joe”? The audience liked the last option more.
Trump, without false modesty, called himself “the wall that protects the American dream from chaos,” which, in his opinion, is not capable of his rival Biden, who sees the enemies of the United States everywhere. He responded to all the accusations against him, including saying that he sees only advantages in a friendly dialogue with Russia, adding that he, like no one, behaves harshly towards Moscow.
“The Democrats accuse me of getting along with President Putin. So is that bad? They call me a man who discloses classified information to the whole world. Nothing of the kind! I just said that we have a powerful weapon, super duper -hypersonic missile. But I did not disclose the details! They call me a racist, because I closed the air communication with China. But it was necessary to protect us from the coronavirus “- explains the Republican candidate.
In Minnesota, South Dakota and West Virginia, early voting ballots have already begun, so the fight between Trump and Biden is getting fiercer and more meetings with voters. The upcoming debate is heating up: Trump and Biden are due to meet face to face on September 29.
90,000 3 excellent hotels in Courchevel and Val Thorens
Breakfast at Hôtel Manali
Courchevel and Val Thorens are twin brothers. And, as in every family, these children of the French Savoy complement each other. Visitors to one of the mountain resorts prefer spas and restaurants, another – hundreds of kilometers of trails, for the third the main thing is a good environment and having friends nearby. But in any of the valleys you will find both. And most importantly, there is also Savoyard cuisine, and not only that. There will be something to eat after a ski day.
Hôtel Manali, Courchevel Moriond
If you wanted to spend your holidays in warm countries, and your half dreamed of a trip to the mountains, choose a compromise option: go to Courchevel Morion – there, at the Manali Hotel you will be greeted with southern flowers. As soon as you enter the hotel, you will realize that Asia with its warm aromas, painted wooden ceilings and Rajasthani marble is not that far away. How did it happen? It’s all about the touching story of two boys, one of whom, just like in a fairy tale, was the son of an Indian raja, and the other was an alpine peasant, his companion in games and skiing. The boys grew up and fulfilled their promise to each other in childhood: not to part and work together. This is how a five-star hotel was built on the site of the old cow pasture. The Buddha guards this quiet world of unconditional luxury, these oriental fabrics and bronze sculptures, and even if it is not the Himalayas, but the Alps at the doorstep of the hotel, you can still skis all day.
However, they still have to be removed for dinner. The restaurant here has no stars, and that’s by design. Because the holidays are not at all the time when you want to dine in a festive atmosphere. “We were going to make a separate room in the restaurant for children, so that babysitters would do them there while the parents were quietly having dinner, but we changed our minds. Our guests are busy people, they see their children only during the holidays and do not want to part with them. Therefore, during school holidays, I honestly send clients without children to another hotel and invite them to come to us after a couple of weeks, ”says the manager.Indeed, despite the elephants, bright amaryllis and oriental candles in the spa are still France.
In Manali, the challenge is choosing between lunch and dinner. Because for dinner – dishes from the chef, and lunch is good because it is served on a sunny terrace. On the menu: soups, pasta, hamburgers and other familiar and simple dishes that are sometimes not remembered in hotels. But in Manali they remember, because here it seems they never forget about you at all.
Lunch at Hôtel Manali
Le Fitz Roy, Val Thorens
If you are going to ski, then you are in Val Thorens, the highest of the French ski resorts, with hundreds of kilometers of slopes. And if in Val Thorens, then certainly in Fitz Roy, the oldest of the local high-end hotels. A spacious family chalet, a wood-burning fireplace in the room and the largest pool in the entire ski village – this evening, just like the Carita Spa. And in the afternoon – skiing, from early morning; you can stand on them right from the doorway.
There is a shop with local products in front of the hotel. There, Reblochon and the old Beaufort argue with each other like medieval princes of Savoy, and since no choice is possible, both must be paid tribute. There are also Savoy pork sausages stuffed with cabbage and spinach – they are called by the local word pormonier. You can take all this home, eat it yourself and treat all relatives and friends, but for the first time you can taste it on the spot, in the hotel restaurant. On Thursdays, in any case, do not order a table in other establishments, because Fitz Roy will also have a fish day – with oysters, clams, “knives” and all possible shells, the names of which only the French know. They will be brought from Brittany in the morning, and on Friday oysters in the mountains will no longer be found. All that remains is to console yourself with a cocktail in the neighboring Val Thorens, but they are there of such a level that even the absence of oysters will be forgotten.
Hôtel des Trois Vallées, Courchevel 1850
If you don’t really care whether you spend the day on the slope or sit on the south-facing terrace, the main thing is that everyone is happy; if the word “Courchevel” scares you with unprecedented prices, then to you – at the Hotel des Trois Vallées. That is, after all, in Courchevel, because you need to face your fears and overcome them. There will be not five, but four stars in the hotel, but as a result it will turn out that you don’t need more: the hotel is nice and looks like a mountain tavern of that era of mountaineering, when wooden skis were tied to the feet with rawhide straps. It can be seen that the owners went through the flea markets with great pleasure and with great taste chose things there that complement the design of the 1950s. At the hotel you can dine, drink tea on the terrace and dine – as easily as you intended. And if you need a restaurant of a higher class, then very well, just door to door, Le Chabichou is located – two stars descended from the Michelin sky there.

Interview of informant Sergei Savelyev, who handed the archive of torture video to human rights defenders
Belarus Sergei Savelyev is 31 years old, eight years ago he ended up in a Russian prison – first in Krasnodar and then in Saratov region.Having gained access to the filming of video recorders, which are required to be worn by FSIN officers, for three years he collected evidence of monstrous bullying and rape of prisoners in order to eventually pass it on to human rights defenders.
He is now in France and is going to ask for political asylum there.
In his first interview with reporters on camera, Sergei spoke about his life in the colony and after it, as well as how he managed to take out of the country the largest archive of video evidence of torture in Russian prisons.
The correspondent of the BBC Olga Prosvirova talked to Sergei Savelyev.
“I chose to live”
BBC: Please introduce yourself with your full name, tell me how old are you are years old and, in fact, who is are you ?
Sergey Savelyev : My name is Sergey Savelyev. I am 31 years old, I am from Belarus and, in fact, I am exactly the person who passed on to the human rights organization Gulagu.net all those terrible shots that are now being replicated in all the media. Well, it’s me.
BBC: Can you tell how you ended up in France? If possible, from September 24, if I’m not mistaken, when you ended up at Pulkovo airport. Can you tell , what happened at this airport, how did you end up there?
S.S .: I decided to fly to Novosibirsk to see my friends. [On the way] from Minsk to Novosibirsk I had a transfer to Pulkovo.I flew to Pulkovo and went to the check-in counter for the next flight to find out when check-in would start. The girl clarified my last name and asked to wait a little. Then I immediately realized that something was wrong here. Well, where to go?
A few minutes later a man in civilian clothes approached, with him two police officers, local, from the airport. Says: “Sergey Vladimirovich? – Yes. – Where are you flying? What are you taking?”
Immediately another couple of people in civilian clothes came up. There were more and more of them every five minutes, about a dozen in total.Nobody showed any IDs, nobody introduced themselves. And there was no need – I already knew who they were.
Started simple – they just thoroughly examined my things. I understood what they were looking for – probably some kind of storage media, flash drives, maybe a laptop. I did not take any of this – I went to visit.
They realized that I had none of this with me, and they took me to a separate room, where they began to conduct interrogation. They immediately laid out their cards: “They tapped your phone there, read the messenger, from what mail you sent all this there, we are aware of.And we know about all your cooperation with [Gulagu.net founder Vladimir] Osechkin for the last six months. ”
So you can imagine that Vladimir Osechkin recruited me in 2013 to go to a Russian prison, steal some kind of video material from there and give it to him? what could be said here… What to do the second series, you need to undergo plastic surgery, change documents and go to another area.
BBC: I know that they offered you some kind of choice, like e- then options.
S.S .: Yes. They immediately confronted me with the fact – you, they say, sit in any case now. For what you did, you sit down. And taking into account what you were doing – you disseminated incriminating information about the FSIN, they will kill you there.Either you will fall from the bed from the second tier, or you will hang yourself in the cell. They’ll find you hanged. Before that, you will tell us everything, and when it is no longer necessary, then … That is, this threat is quite real, this very often happens in reality.
And then the interrogation went along with all these uncomfortable questions. And after that, at the end, they say: well, look, now if you sign up for cooperation with us, then we will attract you under the article “Disclosure of state secrets.” There are up to four years in total.
If not, if you start hiding from the investigation or something else, then it will be espionage, because you are a citizen of another state and transferred information about the Russian Federation to a foreign human rights organization. There from 10 to 20 years and you, he says, will not hide with us anywhere – not in Belarus, not in Ukraine, nowhere in the CIS. We will find you everywhere.
And here it became interesting to me, but the choice – where is it, what choice? That is, you immediately told me that you would put me in prison, and they would kill me in prison. Now you propose to me to sit in prison for four years and they will kill me, or to sit in prison for 20 years and they will kill me. What is there to choose? Can it be more humane to shoot at once?
BBC: How did they let you go?
S.S .: Well, initially it was agreed – we ask you as a witness for now. That is, they have not yet had any direct evidence. That is, these are just these correspondences – how they got them there, it was hardly any legal means.
Therefore, probably, they could not put them at the basis of the accusation, but after they interrogated me and squeezed all these testimonies out of me, I needed to show that I was cooperating, that I was ready.
I signed some documents, an obligation to appear, that is, that I agree to appear when they call me, and they let me go. Besides, I didn’t leave Russia. I flew further across Russia to Novosibirsk and they were probably sure that if I tried to cross the Russian border towards Belarus or somewhere else without their knowledge or permission, then they would see it and be able to stop it.Therefore, I went to Novosibirsk from there. They were released in general.
BBC: And at that moment you realized that this is the end. We must run.
S.S .: And the choice, where is the choice? Then I had another option – to live or die. I chose to live – and started looking for ways to do it. I stayed in Novosibirsk, all this time they continued to write to me in Telegram: “What date did you get the tickets back for? you are flying to your place in Minsk “.
Well, I thought, yes, I was sure that they would not let me go from Russia anymore. That is, we will meet at Domodedovo – and this will be my last stop. Then they will drag me somewhere along the chain of command.
BBC: Have you bought a ticket to Domodedovo?
S.S .: I bought a ticket with a transfer to Domodedovo, but did not use it. I flew to Domodedovo. There is no customs control there, because the flight is internal, and I did not go to the landing from Domodedovo to Minsk, to check-in, since there is no customs control and there they actually had nowhere to stop me.
Therefore, I was sure that they, like last time, will do it at check-in for the next flight. Therefore, I did not go there – I left the airport and went to the nearest bus station, where I just took a minibus, private transport, which is not monitored, crossed the border with Belarus and came home.
BBC: Did you also spend a little time in Belarus?
S.S .: I spent a little time in Belarus, about a day.I was leaving, I did not want to advertise this departure to anyone at all. That is, it was such a secret operation. It’s such stress and fear. It was then, at that moment, that it was just panic.
BBC: When you landed in Istanbul, did you calm down or not?
S.S .: No, it just got more interesting. Because a completely new place, no one speaks Russian.
BBC: And these people who wrote to you, did they continue to write to you? They still tried like – then get in touch?
S.S .: No, I don’t know. One can only guess, but judging by the fact that after three days he stopped trying to get through, then they already understood.
BBC: And how long did you stay in Istanbul?
S.S .: Four days.
BBC: There was already some plan, where next?
S.S .: That is, I already had an end point, the only question was how to get there. And I tried to go all-in right away and try to fly from Istanbul to Tunisia with a transfer at [airport] Charles de Gaulle.
BBC: Why such a difficult route?
S.S .: I absolutely needed the second side, the end point, to be visa-free as well, and I definitely needed a transfer in Paris so that I could get out here and apply for political asylum. But they didn’t put me on the flight. They said it was very suspicious because we have direct flights to Tunisia. And you are flying through Charles de Gaulle, this is very suspicious, you cannot fly like that without a visa. Well, no persuasion, nothing helped.
I had to stay at the airport for another day, and I picked up a direct flight to Tunisia. That is, for more than three days at most, I was going to stay nowhere, but it just so happened that in Tunisia, people are obliged to go through quarantine without vaccinations. That is, it also takes place in fairly comfortable hotels, this is not some kind of infectious boxes or some kind of terrible hospital, no.These are comfortable hotels, there are no less than three stars, a swimming pool, the surrounding area … That is, it’s all great, but I had to spend six days there.
I went to the official website of the French embassy. It was the question of a transit visa that interested me. It turned out that under certain conditions Belarusians do not need a transit visa to France.
Began to study in more detail what these conditions are, and it turned out that the transfer must necessarily be less than 24 hours, there should not be a change of airport. And one of the most important conditions is that both flights, both there and from there, must be operated by partner airlines. I didn’t know which lines were partners to each other, so I started looking for a flight from the same airline. And there and from there. And such a flight was found.
From Tunisia to Charles de Gaulle, from there to St. Petersburg, from there to Minsk. And I was already more calm, that is, there was already a plan in which I was at least 50/50 sure. And they let me on the flight, no one even asked about the visa then, I was immediately given both boarding passes – both for the first and for the second flight. And I flew to Charles de Gaulle.
BBC: How did you even come up to someone there and what did you say, did you have some memorized phrase that I am such and such and want political asylum?
S.S .: Yes, I had this phrase, I don’t remember how it sounds, I have already dropped out of my memory. I repeated it, like a spell, at first to one policeman, he did not understand. Then the second, then the third. Well, no matter how they did not understand anything in the end, they invited me an interpreter, thank him very much, treated him very carefully, with understanding, said that this is a common thing, they come very often, do not worry, this is all a usual procedure, we will sign several papers …This procedure lasted several hours. I was held in some locked room and sent to a deportation center.
BBC: How long did you wait for a decision in the end?
S.S .: I was told – “after lunch”. They always call and announce over the speakerphone, but I went to find out myself, call the police if there is something for me. No, they say we’ll call you. Came two hours later again. There is nothing. I have already gone to get ready for dinner, and then I hear – they call my name. The employee says: luggage, bring luggage. It was clear that a positive decision had already come to my question, and now I would be released into the city.
“Don’t get involved, don’t get involved in other people’s disputes”
BBC: Let’s go back to how you ended up in prison in Russia. You are Belarusian, you grew up in Minsk. How did you end up in Russia?
S.S .: I went there to work with friends. More precisely, an acquaintance had been working there for some time.
BBC: He offered you some money.
S.S .: Well, in general, the story is simple and sad, there are a lot of such stories. I kind of knew they were questionable … substances. Doubtful occupation, but at the same time I was assured that it is not yet on the list of prohibited substances. That the list is updated infrequently. This is something that is not yet on the lists, you have to seize the moment. But, as it turned out, they sent me this package, which was filled with already prohibited substances.
Literally half an hour later, riot police rushed into my apartment – no, even they had “Anti-terror” written on them. They immediately knocked me off my feet right in the doorway, and they ran into the apartment right after me. A hefty guy in these … ankle boots. That is, this first day, of course, it was something with something. This was the initial interrogation, when they still can do anything. Well, then, of course, they allow themselves a lot, but on this first day, of course, they came off pretty well on me.
BBC: What do you mean broke away?
S.S .: That is, they were beaten directly. They beat me all day in the apartment, while the search was going on, seizures. All these big guys stood over me, there, stepped on my head, drove my face across the floor. That is, people were having fun like that. After that, they kept me there for some time in the local IVS and was already taken to the pre-trial detention center. It was SIZO No. 5 in the city of Krasnodar. A very small pre-trial detention center is for its own people. Yes, there are only a dozen or a half cameras, probably designed for two or three people.
BBC: It seems you said earlier that you acquired primary skills in the pre-trial detention center, which later helped you in the colony?
S.S. : Well, actually yes. That is, I was the third in the cell, there were already two people there. One was a Turk, and the second was a Kabardian, in my opinion, who had already been in prison several times. So he begins to more or less explain what will happen next in the remand prison, where I will go next. Because there was still nothing. Well, apart from the fact that we went through investigative actions, many of which were painful.
BBC: How painful?
S.S .: How painful the beatings can be.
BBC: And this man told you something too? What are the main lessons that you learned from communicating with him and with other prisoners?
S.S. : That is, he gave such general advice. Do not get involved, do not get involved in other people’s disputes or in other people’s fights, never sit down to play anything, no matter what your name is, think ten times before you say or answer something.

“Giant torture mechanism”: what happens after the archive of torture video is published
Try not to swear, especially when talking to someone, because there are people who can catch on to one word and turn your phrase around as if you were swearing at him, and not just said something.By the way. That is, it will be quiet – you will swim for yourself and go further into the zone, in the zone everything is different in general, there you can already breathe.
BBC: Why do they say that a pre-trial detention center is a more difficult part of a prison than a colony?
S.S .: Precisely because it is such a small closed room, where there is a very large concentration of people. The FSB pre-trial detention center is a little different, there are very few prisoners, but when I was transferred to pre-trial detention center No. 3 in the city of Novorossiysk, then I understood what they were talking about.
There were 26 in our cell for 12 people. This is despite the fact that it is too small for even 12 people in terms of footage. And these 26 people are in a cell for 12, in the same room there is a toilet and a dining room. And a bedroom for all these 26 people. And all these people are far from being the most pleasant for the most part.
BBC: How long did you spend in jail?
S.S .: In the first – nine months, while the investigation was underway. Until the accusation was finally formed for me.After that I was already transferred to SIZO No. 3 in the city of Novorossiysk, after which I was periodically taken to the city of Krymsk for court hearings.
But this is such a formalism! That is, all these trials for me lasted more than a year, probably. A year and three or four months. Some kind of pouring from empty to empty.
During these one and a half years, I saw what really prison conditions are. It was disgusting. I have already said that the camera is very small. That is, sleeping in turns is a matter of course.Naturally, no repairs. Plaster fell from the ceiling, cockroaches …
I’ve never seen such monsters before. Huge red-haired creatures. A huge number of all kinds of living creatures – that is, there were also ordinary domestic red-haired cockroaches. There were some terrible ones too – sometimes they came from the sewers to look at us, or what …
BBC: What was your sentence and what kind of article did it get?
S.S .: It was article 228.1, part 5 [illegal production, sale or transfer of narcotic drugs] – and unfinished corpus delicti. That is, they all led to the fact that I acquired a large volume of narcotic substances for the purpose of further sale, but did not bring my intention to the end, because the valiant law enforcement agencies stopped these actions. I was given only nine years.
BBC: You were immediately assigned to the Saratov colony?
S.S .: It’s hard to say here. After all, no one tells you such things – they come, knock on the door – such and such, we are going to the stage. And so I ended up in SIZO No. 1 in the city of Saratov. Still in jail. As far as I understand, I was initially assigned to the Saratov region, and upon arrival in Saratov, I was assigned to a pre-trial detention center, there was already a distribution among the colonies.
Even when I was in Krasnodar, there were a lot of rumors that it would be nice not to get to the Saratov region at all. When I was released, everything was different, but then it was one of the most terrible zones.Even in other regions, people have heard about OTB-1 and IK-13 – their most terrible zones.
“They don’t want to find out, it’s just such a breakdown”
BBC: When you were identified – was it some kind of plan “I’m sitting quietly, I won’t shine”?
S.S .: Yes, exactly like that. In general, I was guided by these actions. And in the pre-trial detention center, and further, when I was sent. I was not immediately sent to the OTB, at first I went to IK-10.And I had a plan – I would quietly sit still and go about my business.
BBC: When you entered the colony, what were the – violent actions?
BBC: There you go.
S.S .: With everyone who entered. In Saratov, as it turned out, they do not like those who come from Krasnodar, because they believe that the Krasnodar zones are all “black” – everyone there is “blatant”, so we will now “repaint” you.
BBC: How does this happen?
SS: The very first thing is necessarily “through the line”. And then you are already led into an office where a bunch of employees are sitting – all services, operatives of the security department.
What a wonderful uncle was there – Plugin, Major Plugin, head of the security department. He seems to have had a conversation with me. Such a dark room is not much – only one of it is visible and the employees are standing, and I have two employees on my sides. He asks a question, and if he doesn’t like my answer, he does like this …
BBC: What answer did he not like?
S.S .: I don’t even remember. He didn’t like a lot of my answers.
BBC: What did he want, what did he want to know?
S.S .: It seems to me that they do not want to learn anything. It just happens such a breakdown, like: you understand where you came, be quieter, quieter.
After that, you go through quarantine for a while. There “activists” are already working on you, the employees practically do not pay attention to it.
BBC: How is the quarantine going?
SS: Quarantine is a small, isolated compartment. With a small exercise yard, with several hospital sections. They teach you how to properly make your bed, how to eat in 15 minutes, and so on.
As the very first one, whom I met in SIZO-5, said, when you enter the zone, you will exhale.Well, yes, when I left the quarantine already in the zone, I really exhaled.
Because this is already an open space, there is some kind of gazebo, benches, there you can smoke, walk around, just breathe in the fresh air. After a pre-trial detention center, when you are dirty in this concrete box, where there are a whole bunch of people, just going out somewhere is, of course, worth a lot.
BBC: How long has it been since you entered the colony and before you got a job?
S.S .: I received it almost immediately – as a rule, it happens even in quarantine. You are being questioned by “activists” – what you know, what you can do, what you are. There, everyone already has a kind of dossier, if there is any vacancy. They call, say, to the operative department from the dining room – we need a baker, is there any baker?
BBC: And you said that you can do well with computers.
S.S .: No, I didn’t say that then.At that time, I did not even think that a prisoner could sit at a computer. That is, I did not hide it, but why talk about it – this is a useless skill here.
They came to me from the medical unit – they needed an assistant for doctors, that is, fill out some medical cards, that is, they needed to be able to write there. Not a tricky business, but nevertheless they took me there. I worked there for six months.
BBC: That is, you lived with everyone, and were somehow taken away in the morning, taken there?
S.S .: Yes, in the morning I left my local area, went to the medical unit and stayed there until the evening. After dinner, he returned to his detachment – to watch TV, read a book.
BBC: Did you have normal relations with everyone in the squadron?
S.S .: Well, pretty good. I didn’t talk to very much, because I spent a lot of time at work, but this is no longer a pre-trial detention center, where we are all in the same box and have to somehow contact each other. There, as a rule, people do not care about each other. Somehow everyone settled down in their own groups and that’s it. Of course, I liked this very much, I am not a very sociable person.
BBC: At what point were you transferred to your second, main job?
S.S .: First it was necessary to get sick with pneumonia. Before the New Year in 2016, I caught a very bad cold – well, this is natural, I worked in the medical unit then, and it was a very difficult time, there were a lot of patients, and basically I had to run and help other patients.
I ate pills, and [worked] until I felt really bad – with a temperature of about 40 I collapsed myself at work in the ward and fell on sick leave myself. I lay there for several days with a fever – everything seems to have straightened out. That is, no special tests were done, but the drugs were given, I went on the mend. But it turned out that it was pneumonia, and due to the fact that for the most part I suffered it on my legs, it gave a complication to the lungs – scars remain on the lungs from pneumonia.
And when the planned fluorography came at the beginning of January, these scars were visible in the picture. In many areas there are fluorographic devices, but they are of low power. They are capable of revealing some pathology, but they are not powerful enough to somehow recognize this pathology. That is, it is clear that something is wrong, but what exactly is not clear.
But they have the same procedure – if you see any changes in the structure, you must definitely send to a specialized institution for additional research. Because, of course, everyone is afraid of tuberculosis, given such a population density.
BBC: You were sent to OTB-1.
S.S .: Yes. I was sent to OTB-1.
BBC: Did you understand what this place is?
S.S .: Well, they talk a lot about him there. They talk a lot.
When I was only going to the colony, I met one guy – he was returning through the SIZO from the OTB somewhere to his place – I don’t remember whether to the 17th [colony] or somewhere. That is, it so happened that we were traveling in the same paddy wagon. Well, just such a conversation of fellow travelers.”Who, where are you coming from? – From the OTB. – Well, how is it?” – Well, how to say … Yes, it is better not to get sick.
That is, people, as a rule, did not want to talk at all about what was happening there, because there were few good things happening to anyone there.
BBC: So it was just some kind of rumor that something was happening there?
S.S .: Well, that there are some really terrible things happening there, people are being broken down there – well, that’s it.That there ain’t no cure. I heard that doctors are doing experiments on people there.
BBC: When you were transferred there, how did you imagine what they were doing to people there?
S.S .: Well, first of all, I really didn’t want to go there – I just tried to involve everyone: the head of the medical unit, someone else there – well, just don’t take it, let’s wait at least, we will reshoot! (laughs)
He once tried to hold it back, and for another, probably a week – maybe ten days – I was in quarantine, in an infectious disease box in the medical unit. But no, I still had to go. He [said]: do not worry, we will call, everything is fine, everything will be fine. In general, it went relatively well.
BBC: That is, you were really treated there.
S.S .: Not necessary. As soon as I arrived, as there was a suspicion of tuberculosis, I was immediately taken for an x-ray. And on a more powerful X-ray, they already enlightened me, took pictures in different planes, and it became clear that this was not tuberculosis at all.And that’s all.
But whatever one may say, you will have to spend a week here, because the next stage from here to the “ten” [colony # 10] is only in a week.
BBC: What happened this week?
S.S .: Nothing special. Naturally, I was immediately questioned by “activists” – what you know, what you can do – this is a common procedure in any institution. Those who need it know perfectly well who they are, what they know, what they can, who they worked with before, what specialty or education they have.
Literally three days later, a young man came to me, who called himself the day of the security department, said that he now has a vacancy – he needs a person who, at least at the user level, owns a computer and types quickly and competently. [I say]: well, yes, I can, no question. He says, well, then we’ll call you tomorrow, we’ll talk to someone from the management.
I was called the next day. I was met by Major Alexander Vladimirovich Sergeev, who had a conversation with me, showed me the security department, computers. He said: there is a lot of different documentation, some kind of handwritten, a lot of it is printed on the computer. If you start working here, you will spend all your time here, from wake up to lights out. And in general, all these departments – all this practically will not concern you. There is a lot of work – you will always be busy, busy, the deadline will pass imperceptibly, and so on.
Well, it seems, depending on what to choose from – to spend time somewhere in the department from breakfast to lunch, from lunch to dinner, sleep in a bedroom in a section for 100 people – or take advantage of comfortable conditions, spend most of the time practically in an office space at computer.
BBC: List your main tasks that you had to do.
S.S .: Maintenance of service documentation – very different, from the simplest – just print something, give some blank forms to someone to fill out – to work with some complex schemes: draw them in Photoshop or in some other programs – Word, Excel, video … Well, a lot.
BBC: Couldn’t they do it themselves?
S.S .: No, someone could, but not all.
“This won’t surprise anyone, it’s just that we’ve never seen it before.”
BBC: When did you get your first DVR – and when did you see the first video?
S.S .: Filming on a video recorder occurs constantly, that is, all employees in the institution move with registrars. This is a mandatory requirement. And, of course, they constantly need to be dumped, this information needs to be systematized, somehow viewed.
That is, I almost immediately began to do this, but I was engaged in just these usual video recordings – how an employee makes rounds of departments, how he controls meals in the canteen, that is, the most ordinary, everyday things.
I have been doing this for about two years – that is, I have already worked with archives, but with ordinary, simple ones. All this time, of course, they looked closely at me, there was control over me, they constantly watched. Again, it was a process of some kind of learning – how best to do it, to do it as quickly as possible. But, of course, in many ways I had to get it myself.
BBC: Do you remember the very first video of torture and ill-treatment you saw?
S.S .: The very first … No, I don’t remember.
BBC: Did you just see this on video?
S.S .: Fortunately, yes.
BBC: When you realized what was on these cards, these DVRs, what were your first thoughts?
S.S. : When such video filming takes place, it is prepared in advance – this is not done by an employee. This is done by specially trained people from among the convicts.
This event is being prepared, the person is placed in a camera where there are no stationary video surveillance equipment. Someone from among the convicted, trusted persons comes for a DVR for this purpose. Serviceable, good, so that the sound and picture are normal. To be fully charged.
That is, this is such a special event, it does not happen that I look through the video archive and see how an employee controls the service in the church, and after that it starts … Sorry … Something abnormal.
BBC: That is, you always understood that this DVR …
S.S .: Of course, that it will be brought now – and there will be some tin.
BBC: At what point did you come up with a plan? Did you immediately start copying this to yourself?
S.S .: No, not right away. For a while, I just looked, but I didn’t know how to react to it.
It is difficult to immediately grasp it.Of course, I heard – we all heard about it, everyone who lives in Russia heard about it, everyone knows about it, nobody is surprised.
They torture in prisons, beat in prisons, rape in prisons, kill in prisons – this will surprise no one. It’s just that we’ve never seen it before – well, somehow it didn’t work out. And we are such people … You can say anything you want, but until you look … It’s better to see once than hear a hundred times, right? Or maybe we are just so limited that until you put it under our nose, we do not fully realize what it is.
I had the same idea. I heard many times, I even knew, I was sure. But I’ve never seen it before.
Naturally, it took some time to somehow digest it. Naturally, with all this, continue to perform their functions, continue to work. Because, of course, after the first, and after the second, and even the third, possibly the fifth – apparently, I did not immediately understand what I wanted to do.
But after some time I thought that I would collect it, not yet knowing why. That is, there was still no clear plan of action. I didn’t think then that I would save all this now, and in three years I will take it and do something. No. While I will add.
Because it shouldn’t have been stored – there were specific instructions. Once there is a video recording, events have been held – that’s it, delete it. That is, there was no need to store it – with rare exceptions, when [they said]: copy it to a USB flash drive, and the head of the department with this flash drive then leaves somewhere – to a higher management or, perhaps, somewhere in the department.
BBC: That is, it happened that you gave this flash drive to someone from the colony employees and they took it away?
S.S .: Of course it was.
BBC: Did you understand why some had to be deleted immediately, while others belong somewhere?
S.S .: Then, probably, I realized that there were events that were ordered from above, and they needed confirmation that the events had actually taken place. And there were events that simply had to be held, and either no one asked for confirmation, or it is not required.
BBC: What is the most common reason for filming these videos? That is, why is it necessary?
SS: [The reasons] could be very different. It could be just some kind of educational activities, say, the person behaved badly, complained a lot, for example, to human rights defenders, lawyers, to the prosecutor’s office or somewhere else.Well, or really refused to comply with the requirements of the administration, did not want to comply with the daily routine. Well, such events were held to bring him to his senses, so to speak.
There were cases when it could be some kind of ordered actions. For what? I don’t know, for the purpose of withdrawing evidence, for the purpose of extortion – there could have been anything. For what purpose can you put pressure on a person? Yes, with anyone. What could be the reasons and motives of the people who order this? Here one can only guess.
BBC: When did your plan mature?
S.S. : Somewhere it finally took shape in 2019, probably. Then I already had some moments, but I thought that I would collect. It was not always possible to have time to copy, but what I did, I methodically put everything together, archived, hid.
BBC: Did you already know then that you would come to Vladimir Osechkin with this?
S.S .: No, I didn’t know about Vladimir at that time, I understood it closer to the 21st year. Over the years, complaints about the activities of OTB-1 came more and more, and they, of course, all passed through me, that is, I saw where the complaints came from, who is complaining – just, say, a private person files a complaint through a lawyer or someone’s parents wrote it to the prosecutor’s office, for example. Or complaints came from Vladimir Osechkin. Or, according to publications on his channel, the Investigative Committee and the Prosecutor’s Office began to conduct checks, and then again these complaints fell on us.
That is, you understand what an interesting moment – Vladimir Osechkin on his channel publishes a video with some kind of exposure, with testimonies, testimonies of some victims who say that they were beaten or raped in OTB-1.
The Investigative Committee may initiate a case, and the prosecutor’s office for supervision is also somehow activated. And what do they do – the investigative and supervisory authorities – they send to OTB-1 requests like: “Please explain these, these, these, these questions.”
They do not investigate anything themselves, they do not come to check the testimony on the spot, they do not come to study the veracity of the facts presented by this victim – that is, in which ward it happened, under what circumstances, who exactly did it. No.
They are sending a letter – to interview these convicts, to give explanations from this one, this one, this employee on such and such, such, such and such questions.
BBC: You should have deleted these videos – you didn’t delete them, you archived them. You decided that you would take it outside the colony. You are the only person in the entire history of the existence of the Russian colonies who managed to do this and who even came up with such a plan. You saw what was happening there, you knew what could be threatening you if you did it. And at the same time, you still found these forces somewhere, this courage. How could you?
S.S .: If this, of course, had been opened before I got free, I probably would not have gotten free. That is, he hid it well.
Where did you get the strength? I don’t know. I would not say that it took me some incredible effort to make up my mind to continue to do so. I think that it somehow just came by itself in the moment. And the main thing was to have some kind of plan of action. Let’s say, behave naturally, don’t be nervous.
Although I was already such a person, in the last years of my term, especially, very irritable, very emotional, so no one paid much attention if I was a little more irritable than usual. My work was nervous (laughs).
BBC: Are you the kind of person who came up with a plan and can you follow it further?
SS: To be honest, planning is probably what I succeed in. I feel very uncomfortable if I don’t know what will happen next. Therefore, for the last weeks I felt myself in great stress, when I had no plan and I did not know what awaited me. Not like next week, I didn’t know what would happen tomorrow.
Having a plan makes me feel comfortable. I know how to come to the next point, what sub-points need to be done for this, and I already follow the instructions I have written myself. This is my comfort zone.
BBC: When you saw these videos there, in the colony, were you afraid that the same thing would happen to you?
SS: No, there were fears that the same thing might happen to me if I was not careful enough, prudent enough, if I lost my guard. The main thing was not to break these rules.
BBC: You relied so much on the plan, but in principle anything can happen. Didn’t you have such fear?
S.S .: There is no fear, because when almost everything is provided from all sides, when you know perfectly well how it works …
No, of course, there were very unforeseen moments, there were very stressful situations. Once it happened that at night a huge group came to us from the Investigative Committee, from the prosecutor’s office for supervision and the FSIN department – not only the FSIN department in the Saratov region, but also employees from the FSIN central office – there were more than 15 people, probably. They began to question the convicts, this was also after some of Vladimir’s publications.
BBC: This post was not associated with you.
S.S .: Of course not, I was in prison. At the same time, I thought, wow, a man – is that what he let out there, that they picked up here at night, came from Moscow, from the department, from the prosecutor’s office? What could he have said or done there that they reacted so quickly? And then, probably, then I realized that this is the person who can move all this, stir up all this swamp.
BBC: But at the same time it was a dangerous moment for you? They checked everything, didn’t they?
S.S .: They checked everything completely, they checked computers. They made themselves at home. It was a very stressful moment – but, on the other hand, I also foresaw a similar situation just in case of such a check. I say: the main thing was to hide everything well. Let’s just say, not just wrap it in a bag, put it in the ground, but put a stone on top, but also grow a tree on top – so that no one would guess at all. That was about how much everything was packed in layers. Therefore, it was for this that I was not afraid.
BBC: Physically, how much space did these media take?
SS: This was a relatively large volume. Almost from the palm of your hand.
BBC: Did you have four security checks on your way out?
BBC : So your work all these years, including working with cameras, allowed you to find out how best to hide the disc?
S.S .: Everyone says that this is incredible, impossible. No, this is all possible when you know how it works, when you know these people, you know what to expect from them, how they will at least behave in a given situation. That is, I thought of all this, I “rolled” it all more than once, until I screwed it all up to automatism, until I decided that yes, this option will definitely work. And everything worked out.
BBC: Now several criminal cases have been opened, there are detainees, but this is precisely an “asset”.These are not FSIN members. In your ideal world, what would you like to achieve?
S.S .: These are several criminal cases, some kind of dismissals, personnel reshuffles – this is all, in fact, a trifle compared to what is happening there. I would like it to make people – at least the victims – talk in the first place. It would be nice if those people who are now under investigation began to say what exactly they did and why, what they know about it. So that not only the executors, but also the people who gave the orders, the organizers, would finally be in the dock. That is, then, it seems to me, I would be able to feel some kind of satisfaction.
BBC: From your point of view, this “asset” that was engaged in torture, – what kind of people are they who bully others without feeling remorse?
S.S .: Well, first of all, maybe they are testing. Secondly, how it happened is difficult to understand. Let’s be honest, there are practically no people in prison with an undistorted fate, with an unbroken psyche. This is a place that disfigures souls. Therefore, I don’t know how it happened. Much more important, it seems to me, – what should we do with this now?
BBC: What?
S.S .: Wait and see. I do not know.
BBC: You were in the same colony, but in your opinion: what you saw is widespread everywhere? Or is it one or two colonies like that?
S.S. : I’m sure it’s all over the place. We have repeatedly heard about other such institutions in completely different areas. Perhaps we will see something from there. Perhaps this somehow motivates other people. Perhaps someone already has such information. And this resonance will allow them to finally decide on something that they have not dared to do so far.
BBC: Would you like to be an example for them?
S.S .: Yes, of course. I hope they follow [my example].
BBC: Is your trust difficult now?
S.S .: Trust? No … When they tell me something or I see something, I always want to double-check, I always want to find some kind of catch. [I think]: this is a difficult question, why are they interested in this? There is something here for a reason. It’s true. There is such a term – professional deformation. For example, investigators, who over time begin to behave at home as at work, become suspicious.
And in prison you should always be on the alert, be careful. That is, any person can ask you a question for a reason and have in mind something quite different from what you heard in this question. Depending on how you answer, he may already somehow change your words. Therefore, such suspicion is a defense mechanism.
