Triangle Impact Challenge Winners Announced
Some of the Research Triangle’s most innovative minds were named winners of the Triangle Impact Challenge 2021: FlyRDU on Wednesday. During the challenge, Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) worked with Duke University, North Carolina Central University, N.C. State University, UNC-Chapel Hill and RTI International to improve the air travel experience by finding more ways to keep passengers safe and healthy during the parking, ticketing, screening, waiting, shopping, dining and boarding processes.
RDU is already helping passengers fly with confidence by increasing its cleaning and disinfecting practices, requiring that masks be worn in the airport, encouraging social distancing and using touchless technology. The consortium of local universities and research institutes tapped into the talents of students, faculty and employees to identify additional ways to make air travel safe and welcoming.
The FlyRDU Challenge kicked off in September and finalists pitched their projects in January. Ninety participants submitted 16 idea that were narrowed down to five finalists. The winners are:
1st place: “Deactivate Airborne Pathogens” from Duke University, N.C. State University, Stitch Partners and Johnson Controls. The team demonstrated the rapid effectiveness of aerosolized particle removal using a plasma textile filter that was created at the N.C. State Wilson College of Textiles. The technology is under consideration for a patent and possible future product development.
2nd place: “OM Takes Flight” from Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. The team focused on the design of sanitation schedules that help prevent the transmission of the virus by developing an efficient use of existing resources and by introducing signage and other visual indications that help guide passengers through the airport. A primary objective of the project was to limit the congregation of passengers in queues and other bottlenecks in passenger flows.
3rd place: “ThermaTrack” submitted by Thexa Technologies and Duke University. The team developed an imaging technology that can assist cleaning crews in identifying touchpoints sooner and more completely than standard procedure allows for. The system was developed and tested in a clinical setting at Duke University Hospital and is currently under further testing and development for classroom and other shared spaces across the university.
A total of $120,000 will be awarded to the three winners to help fund project development.

History of the University
Year of foundation of the University of Munich (LMU) – 1472. Built under the Bavarian Duke Ludwig IX. Initially, the institution was located in Ingolstadt. Here students studied four subjects: arts, medicine, jurisprudence and theology.

Striking in its size (does not even fit into the lens!) And splendor of the facade, it really deserves attention. You can look at its facade with your head up to the sky almost endlessly, because it is decorated with several hundred skillfully made statues. Nevertheless, the Leuven Beguinage is included in the UNESCO heritage list.
People still live here in some houses. The atmosphere is incredibly peaceful. It is a pleasure to walk here after visiting the noisy center.
Monument to Fonske
Belgium is a country that is famous and proud of its unusual avant-garde monuments and various street sculptures.The Foncke monument is a vivid confirmation of this. Like the pissing boy in Brussels, Fonske is often dressed in a variety of outfits. According to the official theory, it symbolizes conscientious student students. The Alexander Solzhenitsyn House of Russian Diaspora and the editorial staff of the Yunost magazine know exactly how to preserve the friendship of peoples: books are the beginning of any dialogue.Therefore, the House donates books to universities, libraries, cultural centers around the world.
Practically only literature is able to unite people, while preserving the originality of each person’s native language. They are trying to preserve this identity on the pages of Yunost, whose editor-in-chief, poet Valery Dudarev, together with Yuri Popov, senior researcher at the House of Russian Abroad named after Alexander Solzhenitsyn, brought over 300 history books to the Russian Cultural Center in Abkhazia.Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Abkhazia Semyon Grigoriev, representative of Rossotrudnichestvo in Abkhazia Alexander Vaulin, chairman of the Association of Writers of Abkhazia Mushni Lasuria, member of the Writers’ Union of Abkhazia Juma Akhuba, director of the I.G. Papaskir Boris Cholaria, teachers and students of the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature of the Abkhaz State University discussed the acute problems of cultural interaction between the two countries. Just before departure, a small Russian delegation visited the Lviv Hill of Glory, where they honored the memory of the soldiers who died in the fight against fascism.
However, Yunost’s October travels were not limited to Abkhazia and Ukraine. The magazine was also noticed at the book fair in Frankfurt am Main, where the deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine, the prose writer of the Kazakov style, the singer of small towns of Russia Igor Mikhailov and the regular author of the magazine Arina Kaledina appeared in front of the German publishers.In Luxembourg, the penultimate ruler of this state – the Grand Duke, arm in arm with a noble lady and without any protection, walked towards the delegation of “Youth”. We found ourselves at the University of Milan at the World Exhibition of Art Installations, annually organized by the magazine “Interni”.The name of the exhibition is “Energy for creativity” – “Energy for creativity”. It took place in April-May 2015.
In the center of the main courtyard of the university is presented the work of authors from Russia “Living Line” – the name can be translated as “living line”, “life line”. Its authors are the artist-designers S. Tchoban, S. Kuznetsov and A. Sterligova.
The installation from Russia is compared to the Möbius strip – it is a series of narrow and high mirror columns with faces located at different angles to each other and therefore creating the impression of continuous movement, a multidimensional reflection of life.
Installation “Living Line” looks like a mirage. It should be watched during the day and in the evening. The impressions are completely different: in the evening, the LED lights mounted on the tops of the columns turn on, and the university courtyard fills with a fantastic glow.
The theme “Energy for Creativity” allows the authors of works to combine the art of the past and the thinking of a modern person, to show the unity of the culture created by mankind. All art objects interact with the appearance of the ancient University of Milan, help to comprehend their place in the chain of generations and historical events.
All art objects are “inscribed” in the space of an ancient architectural complex and create now a dialogue, now a magical harmony of works of art, separated in time by half a millennium, but connected by the creative impulse of human genius.
The exhibition is attended by artists from around the world. The most famous names are Kengo Kuma, Philippe Starck, Daniel Libeskind, Alessandro and Francesco Mendini and others.
In the exhibition space there are works of authors from different countries.A row can be seen in the courtyard, part of the compositions – in the buildings of the university complex.
Each work is a kind of key to the riddles of the world.
Many of the works create a very interesting echo of the works of the masters of the last century.
If you look at the exhibits from several points of view, you can see completely different images in each art object. The motives of the inimitable Dali are combined with the music of the future.
