Four middle school girls left the cafeteria and were walking down the hallway, talking and laughing, when they say their principal at East Middle School in Binghamton, New York, stopped them.

The girls — all of them 12 and either black or Latina — were taken to the health office, and without any explanation, subjected to “discriminatory, dehumanizing and unlawful strip searches,” according to a lawsuit filed Monday by their families and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

The suit, which lays out claims of racial bias and a violation of the girls’ civil rights during the Jan. 15 incident, is the latest salvo after the Binghamton City School District denied any strip searches had occurred and said it was hiring an independent firm to review the allegations.

The claims also led New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to announce a state Department of Education investigation.

“Asking a child to remove her clothing — and then commenting on her body — is shaming, humiliating, traumatic sexual harassment,” Cuomo said in January.

According to the suit, which was filed in federal court in the Northern District of New York, a nurse tested the girls’ vitals, searched their physical belongings along with other school officials, and subjected each of them to “humiliating and inappropriate comments about their bodies.”

The nurse is also accused of conducting a sobriety test on one of the girls, and instructing her to remove her clothing, which she refused. Ultimately, the suit says, no contraband or evidence of wrongdoing was found.

The suit says school staff never contacted the girls’ parents prior to conducting the searches, but that the principal, Tim Simonds, later told parents that he sent the girls to the health office because he thought they had been acting “hyper” and “giddy.”

“The laughter and giddiness of adolescent children are not objective facts giving rise to a reasonable suspicion justifying an intrusive search by school officials,” the suit says.

The girls’ allegations that a strip search occurred has divided people in Binghamton, a city near the Pennsylvania border with about 45,000 residents who are 75 percent white.

Activists have led rallies outside of East Middle School, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund joined in the federal suit, which is seeking compensatory damages and for the school district to enact policies that would prevent this from happening again.

In the wake of public outrage in January, the Binghamton City School District said in a statement that “school officials did not conduct a strip search.”

Instead, officials said, “misinformation” was spread on social media concerning the incident and that medical evaluations that are conducted may require a person to remove “bulky outside clothing to expose an arm so that vitals like blood pressure and pulse can be accessed.”

The city’s school board also said that none of the girls were punished and they were permitted to return to class.

But the suit says that one of the girls was given an in-school suspension “without explanation,” and that all of them felt traumatized and missed school for several days.

The girls were temporarily placed in an alternative school after feeling “embarrassed, humiliated and targeted for unwanted attention,” the suit adds.

The suit says that all of the school officials involved in the search are white, and it claimed that the school’s assistant principal, Michelle Raleigh, said she was “afraid” to be left alone with the girls and that the nurse branded them as loud, disrespectful and having “attitudes” — which evoke “all too common stereotypes about black and Latina girls.”

The Binghamton City School District did not immediately returned a request for comment Tuesday. The state Department of Education said it does not comment on pending litigation.

As part of its investigation under Cuomo, a spokeswoman said the department is working with New York State Police, the Center for School Safety and local officials to determine next steps and to “ensure no similar situations occur in the future. “

“Clearly, this situation is extremely concerning and we share the governor’s goal of learning the facts,” spokeswoman Emily DeSantis said in a statement.

Binghamton East Middle School Students Allegedly Strip Searched by Staff

Four 12-year-old girls were allegedly strip searched at East Middle School in Binghamton, New York on January 15.
It came after the girls were accused of being in possession of drugs, and “appearing hyper and giddy during their lunch hour.”
The school has denied giving the girls strip searches, and said officials “acted in accordance with” school policy.

Four 12-year-old girls were allegedly strip searched at their upstate New York middle school after officials suspected they were in possession of drugs because they were acting hyper and giddy.

The girls were questioned then allegedly strip searched by a nurse and an assistant principal at East Middle School in Binghamton on January 15, according to the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin.

At a school board meeting on Tuesday, community members said four black female students were accused of possession of drugs and were searched for “appearing hyper and giddy during their lunch hour.”

“The children were instructed to remove their clothing, and felt shamed, humiliated and traumatized by the experience,” said a statement from the Progressive Leaders of Tomorrow, a local advocacy group.

The Progressive Leaders group claim the girls were searched without parental consent, and that the parents only learned about the incident when the girls got home from school.

School officials denied that the strip searches happened in a statement released to Buzzfeed News.

The school said that officials “acted in accordance with” policy and that the girls weren’t strip searched.

“When conducting medical evaluation, it may require the removal of bulky outside clothing to expose an arm so that vitals like blood pressure and pulse can be assessed,” the district said in the statement. “This is not the same as a strip search.”

INSIDER has contacted the Binghamton City School District superintendent for comment.

A district handbook says students may be searched “only when the school district official has reasonable suspicion to believe the student has engaged in or is engaging in proscribed activity. “

The handbook says that strip searches are “intrusive in nature and almost never justified.”

The four girls’ parents released a statement on Friday saying their daughters “no longer feel safe at East Middle.”

“Listening to our children recount and relive this trauma has been an experience we would not wish on any parent,” the statement said. “And we hope no other child has to experience what they have endured.”

The parents also thanked those who were “willing to listen to and believe our girls.”

Students at a Las Vegas high school are in trouble after pictures of a female student stripped down to her underwear in front of a row of lockers was passed around Twitter earlier this week.

Holding clothes to her face, the girl is seen in just her bra and panties as male students circle around her taking pictures. Uploaded to Twitter Tuesday, the shots soon became the talk of the school.

Early indications that the girl was a special education student were quickly shot down by students speaking to local media.

Aside from a prepared statement, school officials haven’t said much about the incident, and there are no indications how they are handling the students involved.

‘Everybody was talking about it. We saw it and said, ‘What’s this?’ Durango student Amber Kjan asked Fox 5.

Opinions about the photo were generally negative, at least on camera.

‘I think it’s embarrassing for the girl and her whole family, because she has a picture of her online, stripped and almost bare naked,’ Student Nate Lopez told Fox 5.

The impromptu photo shoot took place Tuesday in an upstairs hallway, students told the station. The picture takers haven’t been publicly named.

Mum: School administrators are playing their investigation into the incident close to the vest

As to the notion the girl was a special needs student, her fellow classmates put that to bed rather handily – one even blamed her for encouraging the students to take the photos.

‘She is not mentally challenged at all,’ another student said. ‘She is a perfectly normal girl who decided to make a bad decision.’

At first, everyone is making it seem like she is ‘special ed,’ but she is really not,’ Ms Kjan told Fox 5. ‘Then, they said that the guys made her do it on purpose, but I feel it’s her fault.’

Another student told the station she saw it as bullying.

‘I think it’s really wrong,’ said Brooke Behnen. ‘It’s bullying and I have a big problem with bullying because I’ve been through it myself and I know what it feels like.’

Michele Behnen, Brooke Behnen’s mother, voiced her displeasure with students, and social media as a whole, to Fox 5.

‘It breaks my heart that kids do this to other kids,’ Michele Behnen said. ‘I hate the whole social media outlet. I’m totally against it and it’s shameful.’

The only public remarks made by the school district came via a prepared statement.

‘Please be advised that the Durango administration is actively investigating a social media issue involving several of our students. Safety and protection of our students is our highest priority and this matter has our full attention. Kindly remind your child that cyber bullying and harassment are serious issues that will not be tolerated.’

Though all students involved, including the female, were seen by students in the principal’s office Wednesday, it is not clear if any disciplinary action has been taken.

A Clark County School District spokesperson told MailOnline that ‘an investigation is ongoing’ and punishments will be administered if a violation of rules has been discovered. When further pressed, the spokesperson deferred to the above statement.

Girl, 14, was told to strip before being beaten and hacked with machete in videotaped killing, police say

Worried that Funes-Diaz would go to law enforcement, police said, the gang members brutally attacked her in an assault recorded on camera and left her.

“She was targeted to be murdered,” Prince George’s County Assistant State’s Attorney Cynthia Bridgford said Friday in a bail review hearing for two of the suspects charged in the teen’s killing.

It took a month before the body of Funes-Diaz was found in a creek in Maryland near the tunnel in the woods. Three teens — including another 14-year-old girl — have been charged as adults with first-degree murder in her killing, Prince George’s County police announced this week.

A judge on Friday ordered Joel Escobar, 17, of Northeast Washington, and Cynthia Hernandez-Nucamendi, 14, of Lothian, to remain jailed without bond pending trial in Funes-Diaz’s killing. A third suspect, Josue Fuentes-Ponce, 16, of Bladensburg, is expected to appear in court Monday. Authorities are still working to identify a fourth person, suspected of filming the attack on Funes-Diaz, according to police and court documents.

Funes-Diaz had run away from the youth group home where she had been living in Anne Arundel County, according to two individuals familiar with the investigation. Anne Arundel County police said she was reported missing April 11.

Events cascaded rapidly for Funes-Diaz, according to court documents.

By April 17, she was part of a group that wound up inside a dark, vacant home on Benning Road in Northeast Washington as part of a kidnapping and robbery, according to court documents and three individuals familiar with the matter.

The 14-year-old had asked a man who knew her mother to give her a ride to the Benning Road Metro station, and once there, a crowd of about 15 people eventually swarmed the man’s car and marched him to the nearby abandoned house, court documents show. At the house, according to his account in the court files, he was robbed of $500 and a bank card and interrogated about whether he belonged to a gang.

In a dark room where there were playing cards scattered on the floor, according to the man’s account in the court document, he was kicked and beaten with the handle of a machete and told to strip off his shirt to prove he had no gang tattoos.

He eventually was freed and fled. But not before the young girl — who the law enforcement officials said was Funes-Diaz — had begged for the attack to stop.

Within a day, according to court filings on Funes-Diaz’s killing, Escobar, Hernandez-Nucamendi and Fuentes-Ponce allegedly drove her to an apartment complex in Riverdale.

They walked her to a tunnel under an overpass by a creek, according to charging documents. There, Escobar attacked her with a wooden bat and Fuentes-Ponce with a machete, while another person captured the killing on a camera phone, charging documents say.

Hernandez-Nucamendi told police, according to charging documents, that she stood outside the tunnel during the attack, but heard “several distinct sounds, which she believed was [Funes-Diaz] “being struck with the machete.” Escobar and Fuentes-Ponce came out of the tunnel with blood on their faces and clothes, charging documents said.

Fuentes-Ponce washed the bloody machete in the creek before they all walked out of the woods and drove off, according to charging documents.

The machete was later found still covered in blood in a park in the District, charging documents said.

During her bail review hearing, Hernandez-Nucamendi’s public defender said she was improperly interrogated by police. A prosecutor said at the hearing that Hernandez-Nucamendi was romantically involved with an MS-13 gang member.

Escobar’s public defender said the case hangs on a questionable confession to law enforcement. An attorney for Fuentes-Ponce could not be reached.

I got tired of TV-drama strip-club scenes a long time ago. The genre-defining strip-club TV-show scenes are those from The Sopranos, during which Tony & Co. hang out in the Bada Bing and talk serious man business while naked or mostly naked ladies swing around in the background. There are similar scenes in The Wire, especially in the story line belonging to Shardene, the dancer who overhears all kinds of stuff in Orlando’s strip club and eventually agrees to wear a wire. There are strip-club scenes in True Detective and in the more recent The Outsider too, and they tend to fit into the same mold. Men talk business. Strippers dance in the background. Occasionally one dancer becomes important to the story, but rarely more than one, and never for very long.

It’s become such a tired trope that any lurid excitement we’re supposed to get from the strip-club setting barely even registers now. Even if you set aside the exhausting, obnoxious familiarity of how sexist it all is, the scenes themselves have been visually and narratively boring: [Camera pans from pole dancer to men huddled in a VIP booth] “So … you ever hear about some bad deals going on in this town?”

When I started watching Starz’s P-Valley — Katori Hall’s drama about an exotic-dance club in Mississippi, which wrapped its first season this past weekend — the thing I liked from the very beginning was how much it felt like a response to all those earlier TV-drama strip-club scenes. P-Valley’s story pulls from a world that’s not all that far from the stomping grounds of shows like The Wire or True Detective: It’s about money and crime, bureaucratic corruption, land, gentrification, and who gets to take up space in the world. There’s sex, too, of course, and love and secrets. But in P-Valley, the dancers — especially Hailey (Elarica Johnson), Mercedes (Brandee Evans), and Keyshawn (Shannon Thornton) — are the main characters along with their genderqueer boss, Uncle Clifford (Nicco Annan). It’s not a show about the cops or the gangsters.

P-Valley reminds me of the grand tradition of response fiction, books like Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea, which retells the story of Jane Eyre from the perspective of Rochester’s wife, Bertha, or Wicked’s answer to The Wizard of Oz, or my current favorite, the animated Harley Quinn series. P-Valley isn’t a response to any one work, and it’s not the first time a stripper has been the main character rather than part of the background. It’s different from Striptease, though, or Magic Mike or even Hustlers. In those movies, the strippers get to be main characters because they’re in extraordinary circumstances, and P-Valley has no space for that. It’s too interested in the everyday reality of the Pynk, too focused on the specifics of needing to find child care while you’re dancing or how to manage your regulars. P-Valley isn’t a response to any one story; it’s a rebuttal to the assumption that strippers have to do something other than stripping if they want to be the main characters.

Still, P-Valley does deal directly with the idea that stripping is valuable because eventually it helps you do something other than stripping. Mercedes spends most of the season insisting that she’s leaving the Pynk. She’s finally saved up enough money so she can start a gym, and the dangling drama of Mercedes’s Last Dance becomes a returning plot point in the first season. But she’s not leaving because she loathes it, or because she’s bad at it — Mercedes is very, very good at what she does, and she’s proud of her skills. She’s leaving because, as we learn toward the end of the season, she wants to spend more time with her daughter. For Keyshawn, being an exotic dancer is more safe and more loving than her abusive home life. Hailey, who gives herself the stage name Autumn Night, spends the entire season as a dancer and stripper because it’s the one job she can do while she sorts out her life. There’s a moment in the season finale when it seems like she’s going to run away forever, but in P-Valley, success doesn’t look like leaving your exotic-dance-club job as fast as possible. Success looks like sticking around, because the Pynk is still more stable than whatever else you’re running toward. The series knows that exotic dancing is something from which many of its characters want to escape, but that, even more, dancing often is the escape.

Thinking of P-Valley as defiant response fiction explains why it feels so valuable and so fresh — of course these women have fascinating, rich, complicated lives, of course they can be the center of a TV series, not just slick background bodies. The more I watched of its first season, though, the more I started to realize that thinking about it as a response or rebuttal, as a show that’s linked to and answering all the other TV depictions of exotic dancing, is only engaging with a small part of what makes P-Valley so compelling.

When you frame something as a response first and foremost, it’s hard to let it stand on its own. It’s hard to divorce it from the thing it’s responding to, and P-Valley deserves to have its own space. Its characters, especially Mercedes and Uncle Clifford (and Clifford’s closeted lover, Lil Murda), are memorable, charismatic, complicated people, flawed and also incredibly endearing. The carefully wrought world of the Pynk makes P-Valley as much of a workplace drama as anything else, full of camaraderie and messy workplace politics.

Most impressively, P-Valley is so great at walking the line of its tricky, exploitative, celebratory, impressive, painful, sexualized subject matter. Its dance cinematography somehow encompasses the full range of those contradictions. Sometimes the dance scenes are glorious, jaw-dropping feats of choreography and physical skill; sometimes they’re shot almost entirely from the dancer’s perspective so that the experience of the dance is a dizzying, exhausting blur of bright lights and swinging vertigo. In one of my favorite dance sequences, early in the show, the music for Mercedes’s big dance cuts out entirely. All we’re left with are the sounds of breathing, the slap and squeak of her skin as she hoists herself unbelievably high and then lets herself drop halfway down the pole without falling. Before I saw the show, I had a hard time imagining what an appreciative but nonexploitative TV series about pole dancing could even look like.

There are a few small things that really sold it for me. One was that musicless sequence with Mercedes, and, in particular, a shot from a camera placed high up on the pole so that viewers can see what Mercedes would be seeing from her vantage point near the ceiling. There’s also the way the last few episodes of P-Valley find the parallels between what Mercedes does on the pole and what her mother does at the pulpit — not in a way that necessarily denigrates either of them, but as a cool, straightforward assessment. They both create frenzies, and they both make people want to empty their pockets. Neither act is inherently more worthy than the other. And finally, a shot near the end, an image of Hailey looking at her own reflection in a customer’s eyes while she gives him a lap dance, a perfect image of Hailey watching him while he watches her. It’s a beautifully clear and considered view of the world, and by the end of its first season, P-Valley’s world no longer feels like a pointed response to all the empty strip-club scenes that came before. It feels like a question mark hanging in the air. Why did it take so long for these women to be the main characters?

The drill took place on the day when an unprecedented April snowfall hit Yekaterinburg. According to the organizers, the participants and leaders were asked to cancel the competition, but they refused.And it was not possible to inspect the premises: in the District House of Officers, on the site of which the event was held, the floors were in an unsatisfactory condition. “We suggested not to hold the competition at all or to return home, record the video and send it to us. The teams and their leaders themselves decided to go out and undress, ”Olga Rogulina, one of the organizers of the competition, told .

According to her, no one forced the children to undress. Although the appearance of the children was assessed, due to the weather conditions, the students were allowed to perform in warm clothes.It turned out that the girls themselves insisted on this.

However, the opinions of the participants of the show themselves differ. Some say that they were not given the right to choose where to perform, offering to either march on the street or not participate at all. Others argue that they made the decision to show their skills on the street on their own. “The guys from our team reacted to this normally, everyone agreed to participate, no one moaned or was indignant. Our homeroom teacher and parents responded adequately. It is necessary – then it is necessary.Did we go in vain? Nobody asked the organizers to move the event to the hall, since the regulation stated that the review would take place on the street. It also said: “Have warm clothes with you.” That is, you could wear jackets. Everything depended on the participants themselves, ”schoolgirl Tatiana shared with AiF-Ural .

As a result, opinions about what happened were divided into two opposing camps. Some are sure that the dedication of schoolgirls speaks of a high level of patriotism.In addition, the pupils of military-patriotic clubs are capable of something else.

“It seems to me that we need to take into account the category of children who come to military-patriotic clubs. They think differently, are focused on the result, are ready for such things that adults do not fit into the generally accepted framework. For example, let’s take those guys who go in search of the remains of soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War. These are such shots! Funnel, it is raining, children are knee-deep in water, they will climb there themselves, live in tents.They are different and have a different attitude to all this. And the situation that happened can be classified as curious. There was no snow at the rehearsal, and then it suddenly fell sharply. The leaders of the detachments themselves are imprisoned for patriotism, together with the children they made a decision and implemented it, ”commented Igor Morokov, ombudsman for children in the Sverdlovsk region, .

There are also those who argue that adults only hide behind patriotism, and children are just puppets in their hands.“This is stupidity that the organizers have committed. Children today are very obedient, they do what their elders tell them. Under the guise of patriotism, schoolchildren are forced to humiliate themselves. It is one thing when a child is on duty at the Eternal Flame, and another thing is when he is in uniform standing in the street and greets officers like a lackey, ”says Major General Arkady Vorobkalo, chairman of the Sverdlovsk branch of DOSAAF .

But, for example, in the team of of the student of the cadet corps Tatiana there were no “victims”, taking into account the fact that the guys spent only 15 minutes in the cold. “We were on the street for 10-15 minutes while showing our skills. The rest of the teams were waiting for their exit in the building at that time.Therefore, no one had time to freeze, everyone remained alive and well, ”she shared.

Law enforcement officers did not see any grounds for conducting an inspection in the incident, and no one filed any complaints anywhere. “We talked with all the participants from the Sverdlovsk region who came to the review, meetings were held with the parents. None of them complained, said that it was bad. But just in case, we left our contacts in educational organizations so that parents could contact us, ”commented Igor Morokov.

At the same time, the children’s ombudsman added that in a curious case there is one plus – the children will remember this story for a long time. “At the age of 13-15, we went through such tests, and it was they that remained in our memory. The young boy was able to overcome himself, even if it was difficult. The main thing that remains in your memory is that you conquered yourself, your nature, the weather and did it all together. When I saw these photos, I got a feeling of pride for our children, ”concluded the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the region.
