10 classic authors who were disgusting people in life

When we study history and literature in school, we are taught that talented people, geniuses, scientists, those who left their mark on history, – great figures, and we, mere mortals, should treat them with awe, reverence and respect, because where are we before them. Hence the delusion develops that geniuses are allowed to do everything, we are ready to forgive them for any mistake. At the same time, we forget that talented writers, musicians and scientists are also people, and they are by no means perfect. Today we will try to open your eyes to several classical authors who in life were not the most pleasant, law-abiding and modest intellectuals.
1. George Orwell pawned his friend to the secret services
The writer who warned the whole world about the dangers of a future where the secret police reigns and any inappropriate thoughts are forbidden, had a special book in which he wrote down everyone he suspected of sympathizing with communism. And when he collected enough, he sent it to British intelligence, attaching a note with the words: “Never trust these people.” The list includes director Orson Welles, actress Katharine Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin and many others. It turns out that Orwell was against communism, but did not disdain the services of the secret police.
2. William Golding attempted to rape a 14-year-old girl
Toward the end of his life, Golding began to write memoirs, which were perhaps even too frank. So, he admitted that when he was 18, he was obsessed with a 14-year-old girl named Dora. So obsessed that he lured her into the field and tried to take her by force. The poor thing had to beat him up to get out. As soon as the guy loosened his grip, the girl ran away, and Golding chased after her, shouting: “I won’t hurt you!” However, he did not appear to be remorseful for his actions. Even in old age, describing the incident in his memoirs, the writer said that despite the fact that Dora was still a child, she was already “sexy, like a monkey”, he called her “naturally depraved” and said that she “wanted a hard sex,” which is rather odd considering he was writing this about someone who ran away screaming from him.
3. David Foster Wallace was a brutal stalker
The author of The Infinite Jest was certainly not the best boyfriend in the world. He may have been a brilliant writer, but when he put down his pen, Wallace turned into a real monster. Most of all went to Mary Carr, who was the object of his attention in the 90s. The writer fell in love with the girl at first sight. When they met, Carr was married and had children, but Wallace tried to get her into bed anyway. And when she refused to leave her husband for him, he completely went crazy. At first, he began to spread false information that they were together. Then he tattooed her name on his chest and showed it to her husband. Finally, when all this didn’t work, he cursed her with obscene words and even smashed her car window with his fist. Definitely, only a person who is not all right with the psyche can behave this way. But Carr, apparently, also left not far from him, because instead of reporting him to the police, she started an affair with Wallace. However, even after that, the man did not calm down: he insulted her, threw things at her, but only after he almost broke the table on her head, she realized that she should look for a better boyfriend.
4. Mary Shelley lost her virginity at her mother’s grave
Mary Shelley’s life is much more creepy than her story about Frankenstein’s monster. Not many people talk about it, but Shelley was strange. For example, she carried her late husband’s heart in a jar for 30 years. It’s unusual, but what she did during his lifetime is beyond comparison. The relationship between Mary and Percy Shelley began with the fact that they made love on the grave of the girl’s mother. However, this place was of great importance for the girl. For example, her father taught Mary to read from the inscription on her mother’s grave. So it looks like it’s genetic.
5. Victor Hugo was obsessed with sex
When you think of the author of Notre Dame and Les Misérables, sex is the last thing that comes to mind. However, those who knew him personally understood perfectly well that sex was central to the life of the writer. Moreover, Victor Hugo’s sexual appetite was legendary. They say that on their wedding night, he and his new wife did this 9 times. Soon he already had intimate relationships with every woman who was ready to agree to this. He gave preference to prostitutes and married women. According to one of his mistresses, only in the period from 1848 to 1850. he had relationships with 200 women. Even advanced age did not stop him. As an 83-year-old man, 4 months before his death, in his diary, Hugo described his relationships with eight different women. It is safe to say that every prostitute in Paris knew him. Moreover, on the day of his death, all Parisian brothels closed to pay respect to their most beloved client.
6. Allen Ginsberg was a member of the North American Boy Lover Association
Of course, you wouldn’t expect anything from the author of the Howl poem. And everyone is well aware that Ginzeberg was a homosexual. But did you know that he was a member of the North American Boylover Association, which opposes coming-of-age laws and encourages boys and men of all ages to enjoy their bodies freely? Ginseborg was one of the more energetic members of the association and insisted that the group was not advocating pedophilia, but that he himself was doing so in the name of free speech. At the same time, he wanted to legalize child pornography and argued that it was impossible to know for sure that, for example, 8-year-old children did not want sex.
7. Ezra Pound was a fascist
And this is no exaggeration. He even thundered into prison for treason, because he actively supported the Axis countries. Pound was so obsessed with Mussolini that he even begged him for a personal meeting. And Mussolini really agreed. After the outbreak of World War II, Pound spoke on the radio, stating that it was better for the Americans not to interfere with the Nazis. He openly criticized the American government for opposing the Third Reich, arguing that the Jews were to blame for the war.
8. Flannery O’Connor was openly racist
In private, the writer of the US South has spoken out against the Black Civil Rights Movement in the US. She considered blacks to be ignorant people who nevertheless could not keep their mouths shut.
9. Jerome Salinger was obsessed with teenage girls
The author of The Catcher in the Rye had a craving for underage girls. At least that’s what his girlfriend Joyce Maynard said. And she really has her reasons. Take, for example, the fact that when they started dating, she was 18 and he was 53. Another woman, Jean Miller, claims to have dated Salinger when she was only 14. Their relationship lasted 5 years. In Salinger’s defense, it must be said that they did not have an intimate relationship until the girl came of age. However, after this happened, he broke up with her, and they never saw each other again.
10. Norman Mailer stabbed his wife to death with a paper cutter
In the 1960s. the writer ran for mayor of New York. He threw a nomination party, but fewer people showed up than he expected. Mailer got upset and got drunk, and then began to provoke those present into a fight. His wife was tired of all this, and she began to shout insults at her husband. In response, he took a paper knife and plunged it into his wife’s chest, only miraculously missing the heart. When one of the guests tried to help the woman, Mailer said, “Leave her. Let the bitch die.” Later, he changed his mind and still took his wife to the hospital. He managed to escape punishment.
