Bound by Flame: a song of ice and fire
The French studio Spiders has been trying to make the role-playing game of their dreams for the third year in a row, experimenting with the setting, like in Mars: War Logs, then with characters, like in Of Orcs and Men . Comes out with mixed success. With the plot, characters and dialogues in the RPG from Spiders, everything is in order, but with the gameplay, to put it mildly, not very much. In Bound by Flame, the developers went for broke, trying to borrow the best elements from other RPGs, but staying true to their own style and storytelling manner.

This world is doomed. The war, which lasted 15 years, is coming to an end. The remnants of the armies of humans and elves are hiding in the last refuges, which will soon fall under the onslaught of hordes of the living dead, led by the Ice Lords from the North. The lords have not lost a single battle, and how can they lose if after the battle every fallen one becomes a soldier of their army.
The authors of the plot say hello to George Martin and assure that all coincidences are random. The last hope of the living, a group of mages trying to perform an ancient ritual to gain some extra power in the fight against the Ice Lords. Naturally, something will go wrong and your character will gain strength. And in addition to her – a caustic dark demon, who speaks very dismissively about the shell he got.
By and large, Bound by Flame follows the same patterns as the previous two Spiders projects. Here are the same corridor levels, strong enemies that easily send your hero to the forefathers, unpretentious stealth, predictable silent partners and not the most modern graphics. But this time, the studio seems to have found funding and polished the components of the game.

Despite the shortcomings of the engine, and this is still not the most advanced Silk Engine, the graphics in Bound by Flame have been improved.
And although the environment does not shine with variety, but this time there are no complaints about character and monster models, weapons and animation, everything looks good. As a bonus, a very good soundtrack is attached, some of the compositions from which even AAA projects will envy.
Bound by Flame is not the first game in which the developers decided to put two personalities in one body. The demon is perhaps the most interesting of your interlocutors, although after a while you will probably have no one to talk to. You will either become a demon yourself, losing your human essence, and at the same time the ability to wear a helmet, or suppress your second essence, trying to remain human. The demonic form gives good bonuses if you choose the mage career. Each of your choices will affect the story of the game and the appearance of the hero, almost like in Mass Effect.
In addition to the demon inside, you also have traditional partners, and you can only take one of them into battle.
All of them are quite expected – an innocent magical girl, a stern knight who speaks of himself in the third person, an unshaven renegade elf, a suspicious witch in a too revealing dress (hello, Morrigan). Pleases, perhaps, only one of the partners – a restless dead necromancer, who, according to him, is already 6000 years old. With each of your colleagues you can discuss their personal and public affairs, everyone is ready to give you a task, almost everyone can be seduced. The combat itself this time was interesting for Spiders. In combat, your hero resembles the Witcher.
He is dexterous with a sword or dagger, but can easily use fire spells. All three branches of skill development can and should be combined. In stealth mode, shoot gaping sentries with daggers, go out with a sword against bosses and strong opponents, supplementing basic attacks with fire. In principle, we saw something similar in Of Orcs and Men, but in Bound by Flame the mechanics were tweaked and adjusted, the fight became more interesting. The warrior focuses on blocking and parrying attacks, the killer on rebounds and leaving the line of attack. Enemies change from level to level and at first it is difficult to deal with them. But as soon as you catch the rhythm, you can even attack the local “behemoths” with only daggers.
Bound by Flame has a custom crafting experience. Accessories and additional elements that give bonuses can be added to any armor and any weapon. For armor – shoulder pads, thigh pads and decoration on the belt, for gloves – elbow pads, for boots – knee pads.
For weapons, you can make a new guard and pommel. The number of options depends on the specific subject, but it is quite large. In general, it turned out to be more realistic than embedding pebbles in special slots.
Bound by Flame is perhaps the best RPG from Spiders to date. Perhaps the game has too many borrowings from other projects and against the backdrop of the recent Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, Dark Souls II and The Elder Scrolls Online, it is a little lost, but in general, Bound by Flame deserves the attention of fans of story-driven action/RPGs.
