It’s hoping that it can entice former Live PD fans. In July, the media company announced that it penned Dan Abrams to host and produce the program. Dan Abram Live will kick off on Monday, September 27 at 8 p.m. Eastern. The hour-long show will feature analysis and discussion.

Live PD stars to reunite once again
Dan Abrams wants to avoid partisanship on his show. In a promotional ad, the Live PD alum addressed the media and his mission for his new series. He watched three cable news hosts from a chair. Then, he stepped out in front of them to speak.
“So many cable news hosts are playing a part like you guys are,” Dan Abrams says. “I get it. You feel the heat to pick a side, pick a party. Too much riding on this for you to be honest about what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Well, I’m not going to cheer for a team. I’m also not going to fake objectivity. I’m gonna be honest with our viewers about what I think and let them decide.
”

Earlier this month, he took to his blog to announce that Sean “Sticks” Larkin will “become a regular contributor on the show.” As for the future of Live PD, Dan admitted that he felt “confident” about it returning earlier this year. Now, he’s “incredibly dismayed” that it hasn’t returned. Despite what fans think, Dan says he does not have “financial stake” in the show and he can’t bring it back from the dead.

Dan Abrams hopes to change cable news, chip away at CNN and Fox News — with pro-cop agitprop
ABC News legal analyst and media mogul Dan Abrams is a powerful guy, with his fingers in many pies, even once owning a stake in an upscale Greenwich Village restaurant.
But his latest launch, the primetime NewsNation cable show “Dan Abrams Live,” takes a peculiar tack: Rather than “speaking truth to power,” in the journalistic cliché, it centers around protecting some of the most powerful people in our society: police officers.
Abrams’ new show appears drenched in deep and unconditional love for those who wear the badge. One promotional ad I heard recently on the Washington, D.C., Metro goes like this: “You know, too often the media ignores the everyday heroics of police. That changes on NewsNation.”
During his debut episode on Monday night, Abrams said: “As a regular feature of the show, we will be highlighting police work and some of the incredible and dangerous situations officers deal with every day.” And over the next two broadcasts on Tuesday and Wednesday, the former host of “Live PD” on A&E — a highly-rated show that was pulled from the air after filming an incident in which a Black man was killed by police — continued to carry copious amounts of water for cops.
On Monday, Abrams was joined by former Tulsa police sergeant Sean “Sticks” Larkin, a regular talking head from the A&E show.
Strategically and in every other way, this seems odd. Why is a politically “moderate” cable news show — yes, it’s being billed that way — advertising heavily in the diverse D.C. metro area with a message that police officers are role models too often railroaded by more mainstream news outlets?
I emailed Abrams this week with these and other questions about his new program and, more specifically, his particular affection for policing.
In one email, I asked him about the perception that BIPOC (Black, indigenous and people of color) Americans are unjustly killed by police at disproportionate rates, and how he squares that with a show focused on the good-faith acts of cops. Wouldn’t a “moderate” cable news show hold those with power accountable?
Abrams ultimately requested that I run both my questions and his answers in full for “fairness and completeness,” something I hadn’t agreed to in advance.
I’ve done my best to accommodate that in good faith.
He responded to that question by writing that “uniformly demonizing police is a scourge I hope to combat” on his show:
I appreciate the transparency about your viewpoint in the question so I hope you will appreciate my response in the same vein. I believe one of the greatest sins journalists can commit is to feign objectivity, so your willingness to make your poition on the matter clear and unambiguous, is refreshing. You seem to be suggesting that “BIPOC Americans” are being “murdered” by police on a regular basis with just the “occasional good faith” police officers doing their jobs. This, in my opinion, shows a fundamental lack of understanding of what police officers do and are supposed to do, every day. In fact, part of the purpose of this show is to present far more accurate and complete portrayals of policing in America. Police reform is important and police officers who commit crimes must be held to account, but uniformly demonizing police is a scourge I hope to combat.

In response to my question about accountability and police misconduct, Abrams said he won’t avoid the topic. “I will certainly be covering police misconduct and the accompanying trials when appropriate. This show is not, however Salon TV,” he wrote. “It is entirely within your discretion to solely focus on police misconduct, but that is not what I will be doing. I hope that answers your question.”
As full disclosure, I worked for the site Mediaite, which is owned by Abrams, for more than a year, from January 2020 to March 2021. I have never met him in person, and had never previously communicated personally with him before our email exchange over the past week.
Abrams’ show has yet to capture the attention of major media reporters, and may remain an oddity on the cable landscape. It’s unclear why pro-police viewers would pick “Dan Abrams Live” over the known right-wing propaganda enterprises at Newsmax and Fox News, and even less clear why liberals or “moderates” who traditionally watch CNN would do so.
Indeed, recent cable news history would seem to back such an assertion. When former Fox News host Shepard Smith moved to CNBC, his attempt to brand a “moderate” cable news show was a “high-priced flop.”
At the moment, NewsNation averages around 100,000 viewers daily, according to publicly available cable news ratings, making the channel barely visible relative to Fox News and CNN, and even behind CNBC and Newsmax TV as well.
Asked about the difficulty of pulling audiences away from the cable news behemoths, Abrams said: “Yes, it’s an uphill battle because I do think people are stuck in their echo chambers. But I certainly hope we will be able to break through, because the vast majority of Americans identify themselves as moderates.”
Sean ‘Sticks’ Larkin Launches ‘Coptales’ Podcast with Law & Crime

What happens when police get too cozy with informants?
Over a year ago, I wrote a column for my “law and pop culture” series regarding the A&E show Live PD. In that column, I spoke about the problems these types of series can cause for defendants and law enforcement.
In Oklahoma, where I practice, Live PD has tainted more than one law enforcement agency. After what can only be described as a less than positive experience overall—as I noted in the prior column—the Tulsa Police Department “declined to renew its contract with the show after the Tulsa police chief argued the agreement ‘was not in the best interest of the department.’”
Sgt. Sean “Sticks” Larkin was one of the prominent officers featured in the Tulsa PD Live PD iteration. In May 2021, Larkin announced his retirement from that agency, perhaps to focus on a television career that has included gigs as an analyst for Live PD and the spinoff PD Cam.
However, Larkin’s decision to retire may not have simply been motivated by his newfound television opportunities.
‘Coptales and Cocktails’
For one, Larkin has a relatively new podcast he is promoting. Coptales and Cocktails features Larkin and his co-host, an ICU nurse.
The podcast’s theme revolves around different aspects of law enforcement, discussed while everyone enjoys an alcoholic beverage (hence the program’s title and sponsor, a whiskey reviewing blog). After reviewing a few episodes, I felt like other attorneys I had heard from: not a fan. Granted, much like most cops probably don’t enjoy hearing criminal defense attorney bragging rights, the same holds true from the other side of the fence.
However, a more significant explanation for my response involves the specific subject matter of one of the episodes I listened to. In that installment, Larkin interviewed one of his former confidential informants, “Connor.” Larkin no longer works with “Connor” (whose actual name was withheld), but the two recounted many of their interactions together while Larkin drank and Connor smoked weed.
Now, I don’t mind him ingesting marijuana in the slightest. Oklahoma allows for medical marijuana. I took a bit of offense, though, to two things. First, it was off-putting when Larkin cast Connor as just a guy with a “good heart” looking out for his neighborhood and city.
That description was in light of admitting the two were introduced because Connor was a drug dealer flipped to Larkin by one of his associates. Additionally, Connor wasn’t just working as a CI because he is a “good guy”—he was getting paid as well. (Yes, informants can get paid by law enforcement.)
Secondly, one passage in which the two reminisced about Connor texting Larkin updates during a criminal hearing made my spider-sense tingle. Courts employ the rule of sequestration during hearings and trials for a reason. Witnesses are not supposed to be aware of other witnesses’ testimony. The fact that these two were so chummy that Larkin used this avenue of communication, or at least allowed it, made me wonder what else may have gone on behind the scene.
Protecting ‘bad cops’?

The other potential reason behind Larkin’s retirement involves his new book, Breaking Blue: Real Life Stories of Cops Falsely Accused—and perhaps even more so—the motivations behind that book.
According to the Tulsa World, Larkin was one of the officers who became compromised and barred from testifying in federal court due to his involvement as an unindicted co-conspirator in a police corruption probe that became public in November 2009. The allegations involved officers stealing evidence while investigating drug offenses. Larkin’s law enforcement colleague, former Officer Jeff Henderson, was acquitted of multiple counts but ultimately found guilty of perjury and civil rights violations, leading to his incarceration.
Interestingly, Henderson just so happens to be one of Larkin’s most recent podcast guests.
Larkin’s involvement as an unindicted co-conspirator means he was never charged, so to be fair, he never had his “day in court” or the ability to try and clear his name by maintaining—and establishing—his lack of guilt through trial. Still, the resulting stain of the allegations, along with “incidents as far back as 2007 in which Larkin was accused of improper conduct at work,” have been difficult for Larkin to wash away.
According to Larkin, “When you are Giglio’d, there is no way to defend yourself … it’s career-ending for a lot of people.”
Giglio v. United States
Larkin was referring to Giglio v. United States, the seeds of which began with Brady v. Maryland. Pursuant to Brady, the prosecution violates a defendant’s right to due process when it withholds evidence that is material to either guilt or innocence.
In Giglio, the Supreme Court held that the prosecution’s obligation to disclose evidence that could exculpate a defendant or reduce the penalty extended to impeachment evidence (evidence that a witness has made statements or committed acts that could be offered to draw question as to the believability of the witnesses’ testimony). The obligation holds firm regardless of whether there is good or bad faith on the part of the prosecution, and suppression could be the proper remedy if such evidence is withheld.
To put it more succinctly, it did not matter whether the failure to disclose was intentional or negligent—disclosing Giglio information remains the responsibility of the prosecutor as a representative of the government.
After Giglio, and in conjunction with Brady, when a prosecutor calls a law enforcement officer as a witness, that prosecutor has an affirmative obligation to disclose impeachment evidence, even if they are not personally aware of the Giglio material.
As a result of the court extending the Giglio decision to law enforcement, when prosecutors don’t turn over potential impeachment evidence regarding their law enforcement witnesses, the proper remedy could be suppression of the witness’s testimony (if discovered prior to trial). If the issue is discovered after conviction and during appeal, the remedy can be a new trial for the accused.
Recent reform measures
Like so many other professions, law enforcement officers—and by extension the prosecutors who work hand-in-hand with them and knowingly or recklessly endorse their testimony—harm themselves when they fail to “out” the bad apples in the bunch. A new development, however, could hopefully lay the groundwork for much-needed reform.
According to CNN, “In response to the police killing of George Floyd, 15 unions that represent law enforcement officers across the U.S. have endorsed a blueprint for policing that includes an unprecedented shift in the way unions protect bad police officers.” The plan is simple: Step in when you see another union member doing something wrong.
This new framework would “empower local union members to speak up and take action if fellow members are violating their professional oath or abusing their power and ultimately helps the union weed out wrong-doers from union membership.” This, in turn, would also give the unions more discretion in looking at the merits of an officer’s actions when deciding whether or not to defend said officer’s conduct.
The move could rightfully break up decades of union solidarity. Very notably, the Fraternal Order of Police, which represents 356,000 members across the country, was not involved in developing the plan.

After a name-the-team contest, the former Highline Bears summer collegiate baseball team will be known as DubSea Fish Sticks, edging out DubSea Seal Slingers by the slimmest of margins.

December Will Be Measuring-Stick Month for Celtics

The Celtics will then return home for five games against Milwaukee (13-8), Golden State (18-3), New York (11-10), Philadelphia, and Cleveland (11-10), before heading to Milwaukee for a Christmas matchup against the Bucks.
They’ll stay on the road for one more game in Minnesota (11-10), before returning home to face the Clippers. And finally, they will close out the calendar year with a New Year’s Eve showdown against the NBA-leading Suns at TD Garden.
