What are the different levels of women’s lacrosse sticks. How do beginner, intermediate, and advanced sticks differ in design. Which features should players look for when selecting a lacrosse stick. How can the right stick improve performance on the field.
Understanding the Basics of Women’s Lacrosse Sticks
Women’s lacrosse sticks may appear similar at first glance, but they are designed with specific features to suit different skill levels and playing styles. The head shape, pocket depth, and overall construction all play crucial roles in a player’s performance on the field.
There are three main categories of women’s lacrosse sticks:
- Beginner sticks
- Intermediate sticks
- Advanced sticks
Each type is tailored to match the skills and needs of players at different stages of their lacrosse journey. Understanding these differences is key to selecting the right stick for optimal performance and skill development.
Beginner Lacrosse Sticks: Features and Benefits
For those new to the sport, beginner lacrosse sticks offer several advantages to help ease the learning curve:
- Lightweight construction for easier handling
- Wider, flatter scoop for improved ground ball pickup
- Larger pocket for easier catching
Why are beginner sticks designed with a flatter scoop? This “pancake spatula” shape makes it much easier to get under the ball when scooping ground balls, a fundamental skill that new players often find challenging. The wider head and larger pocket also provide a bigger sweet spot for catching passes, helping beginners build confidence as they develop their skills.
Selecting the Right Beginner Stick
When choosing a beginner stick, focus on these key features:
- Lightweight materials (often composite plastics)
- Wide, flat scoop
- Larger pocket area
- Comfortable grip
Remember, the goal is to find a stick that makes learning the basic skills of lacrosse as accessible as possible. As players progress, they can transition to more specialized equipment.
Intermediate Lacrosse Sticks: Bridging the Gap
Intermediate lacrosse sticks are designed for players who have mastered the basics and are looking to refine their skills. These sticks offer a balance between the forgiving nature of beginner sticks and the precision of advanced models.
Key characteristics of intermediate lacrosse sticks include:
- Slightly narrower head shape
- More defined pocket
- Improved ball control for cradling
How does an intermediate stick improve ball control? The narrower head and more defined pocket work together to keep the ball more secure during cradling motions, allowing players to maintain possession while running and dodging defenders.
Position-Specific Considerations for Intermediate Players
At the intermediate level, players often begin to specialize in specific positions. This can influence stick selection:
- Midfielders and defenders may prefer sticks with a flatter scoop for ground ball pickup
- Attackers might opt for sticks with a narrower throat to improve shot accuracy
When transitioning to an intermediate stick, consider your primary playing position and discuss options with coaches or experienced players to find the best fit for your evolving skills.
Advanced Lacrosse Sticks: Precision and Performance
Advanced lacrosse sticks are engineered for experienced players who demand the highest level of performance from their equipment. These sticks offer:
- Specialized head shapes for different playing styles
- Customizable stringing options
- Premium materials for durability and feel
Why do advanced players often prefer customized stringing? Custom stringing allows players to fine-tune the pocket’s depth, shape, and tension to match their specific throwing and catching preferences. This level of customization can significantly impact ball control, shot power, and overall stick skills.
Selecting an Advanced Stick
When choosing an advanced lacrosse stick, consider these factors:
- Head shape (pinched or flared)
- Pocket style (traditional or mesh)
- Shaft material (composite, metal, or wood)
- Overall balance and weight distribution
Many advanced players have a clear preference based on years of experience and may even keep multiple sticks for different game situations or weather conditions.
The Importance of Proper Fit and Maintenance
Regardless of skill level, proper fit and maintenance are crucial for getting the most out of any lacrosse stick. A well-fitted stick should feel like an extension of the player’s arm, allowing for natural and fluid movements.
Key aspects of proper fit include:
- Appropriate stick length based on player height and position
- Comfortable grip diameter
- Balanced weight distribution
How often should lacrosse sticks be maintained? Regular maintenance is essential to keep your stick in top condition. This includes:
- Checking and tightening screws
- Inspecting the pocket for wear
- Cleaning the head and shaft
- Replacing worn-out parts as needed
Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your stick but also ensures consistent performance on the field.
Evolving Technology in Women’s Lacrosse Sticks
The world of lacrosse equipment is constantly evolving, with manufacturers introducing new technologies to improve performance and durability. Some recent innovations in women’s lacrosse sticks include:
- Advanced composite materials for lighter, stronger shafts
- Engineered head designs for improved ball control
- Weather-resistant coatings for consistent performance in all conditions
How do these technological advancements benefit players? By incorporating cutting-edge materials and design principles, modern lacrosse sticks offer improved feel, durability, and performance. This allows players to focus on developing their skills without being limited by their equipment.
Staying Informed About Equipment Trends
To stay up-to-date with the latest developments in lacrosse stick technology:
- Follow reputable lacrosse equipment manufacturers on social media
- Attend lacrosse clinics and demos to test new equipment
- Consult with experienced coaches and players about their equipment preferences
- Read reviews and comparisons from trusted lacrosse publications
By staying informed, players can make educated decisions when it’s time to upgrade their equipment, ensuring they have the best tools to support their growth in the sport.
The Role of Lacrosse Sticks in Skill Development
While having the right equipment is important, it’s crucial to remember that the stick is just a tool. True skill development comes from dedicated practice and proper technique. However, using a stick that matches your skill level can significantly enhance the learning process.
How does the right stick contribute to skill development?
- Beginner sticks make fundamental skills more accessible, building confidence
- Intermediate sticks challenge players to refine their technique
- Advanced sticks reward precise movements and control
By progressing through different types of sticks as skills improve, players can continually challenge themselves and push their abilities to new levels.
Integrating Stick Skills into Practice Routines
To maximize the benefits of your lacrosse stick, incorporate these elements into your practice routine:
- Wall ball drills for improved catching and throwing
- Cradling exercises to enhance ball control
- Ground ball pickups to master scoop technique
- Shooting drills to develop accuracy and power
Remember, consistent practice with proper form is key to developing strong stick skills, regardless of the level of equipment you’re using.
The Growing Popularity of Women’s Lacrosse
Women’s lacrosse has seen significant growth in recent years, with more schools and communities offering programs for girls and young women. This expansion has led to increased demand for quality lacrosse equipment, including sticks designed specifically for female players.
What factors have contributed to the sport’s growth?
- Increased visibility of collegiate and professional women’s lacrosse
- Emphasis on the sport’s benefits for physical fitness and teamwork
- Expanding youth programs and clinics
- Growing recognition of lacrosse as a pathway to college scholarships
As the sport continues to grow, we can expect to see further innovations in women’s lacrosse stick design, catering to the evolving needs of players at all levels.
Community Initiatives and Lacrosse Development
Many communities are taking steps to introduce lacrosse to new players and expand opportunities for girls to participate in the sport. For example, the East Orange Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs in New Jersey has recently launched a free girls’ lacrosse clinic for grades 5-8.
These types of initiatives often focus on:
- Teaching fundamental skills
- Providing access to proper equipment
- Fostering a love for the game
- Creating pathways to competitive play
By introducing young players to the sport with appropriate equipment and instruction, these programs lay the foundation for lifelong participation and enjoyment of lacrosse.
Making an Informed Decision When Purchasing a Lacrosse Stick
With the wide variety of women’s lacrosse sticks available, making the right choice can seem overwhelming. However, by considering your skill level, playing style, and goals, you can narrow down the options to find the perfect stick for your needs.
What steps should you take when selecting a lacrosse stick?
- Assess your current skill level honestly
- Consider your primary playing position
- Set a realistic budget
- Try out different sticks if possible
- Seek advice from coaches or experienced players
Remember, the most expensive stick isn’t always the best choice, especially for newer players. Focus on finding a stick that feels comfortable and supports your current abilities while allowing room for growth.
The Importance of Proper Sizing
One often overlooked aspect of choosing a lacrosse stick is proper sizing. A stick that’s too long or too short can hinder performance and potentially lead to bad habits or injuries.
How do you determine the right stick length?
- For most field players, the stick should reach from the ground to just under the armpit
- Goalies typically use longer sticks, often reaching from the ground to the top of the head
- Some positions, like defense, may prefer slightly longer sticks within legal limits
Always check the current rules and regulations for your league or level of play to ensure your stick meets all requirements.
Embracing the Journey of Lacrosse Skill Development
As you progress in your lacrosse journey, your equipment needs will evolve. Embrace this process as a reflection of your growing skills and deepening love for the game. Whether you’re just starting out with a beginner stick or fine-tuning an advanced setup, remember that the stick is a tool to express your abilities on the field.
How can you make the most of your lacrosse experience?
- Focus on fundamental skills, regardless of your stick type
- Seek feedback from coaches and teammates
- Set personal goals for improvement
- Enjoy the process of learning and growing in the sport
By approaching your lacrosse development with patience and dedication, you’ll find that the right stick becomes an extension of your skills, enhancing your ability to play the game you love.

Do you know the differences?
When looking at a wall of women’s lacrosse sticks, it can be very difficult to see the differences between each one and just say “they all look exactly alike!” I can assure you that during preseason, I get that from almost every beginner player and/or parent on a daily basis. Once I start to break things down for them, they start to understand why different levels of players (beginner, intermediate and expert) play with different shaped heads.
Beginner
Typically, beginners want to use a light weight stick and one that is very flat on the top scoop. I think we can all agree that learning to pick up ground balls can be frustrating in general, but as a beginner, you want to have a flat, pancake spatula looking scoop, which will make it much easier to get under the ball. All sticks, no matter what level, start off not broken in and can all give off the appearance of looking very flat. However once you pick up the stick and look at the scoop, you can usually tell if it is a beginner stick or not.
Intermediate
To me, intermediate players have played lacrosse for a year or two but only during the spring season. They have either grown and their stick is too short for them or they want a head that has a bit more shape to it so it stays in better while cradling. These players I usually ask what position they are mainly playing-attack, midfield or defense. I usually try to direct the midfielders and defense players towards sticks that still have a flatter scoop because they are still constantly picking up ground balls. Attack players can get away with a more narrow throat in their stick because it helps direct the ball to come out of the stick straight; allowing more accurate shots.
Advanced
These players have a stick in their hands year round and usually know exactly which stick they want because they have borrowed their friends sticks to play with. Sometimes advanced players will actually keep their current stick (because it’s lucky or extra special) and simply get it restrung with a different runway/pocket.
Even though to the untrained eye women’s lacrosse sticks can look very similar and just look different because they are different colors, they do vary quite a bit. Even though it’s always important to have a great looking stick, making sure you have one that meets your skill set is even more important.

EAST ORANGE, NJ — The East Orange Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs is offering a free girls’ lacrosse clinic at Columbian Park on Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. during the month of July.
The clinic’s first day was held on Saturday, July 8. It is coordinated by Livingston High School students, twins Layton Lee and Hunter Lee, who also recruited teammate Aryanna Lennon. The Lees are former residents of East Orange, and all three are girls’ varsity lacrosse players.
East Orange Recreation Director Jamal Pearson said he was contacted by Jarrott Lee on behalf of his daughters, Layton and Hunter, who wanted to offer the clinic through the East Orange Recreation Department. Jarrott Lee is also a USA Lacrosse Women’s Game Level 2 Coach.
Girls in grades 5-8 are welcome to join the clinic. Pearson said he is hoping to continue the lacrosse program on the recreational level for the upcoming school year. He is also hoping it will generate enough interest to form a girls’ lacrosse program at East Orange Campus High School.
“It’s an open door,” said Pearson. “We can hopefully infuse some interest. When the young ladies return to school, we can still have the lacrosse program up and running. We want to start developing it on the recreational level, with the hopes that it will transition into high school at some point.”
There were about 12 girls who took part in the first day. Pearson said he is looking to double that turnout. The clinic’s attendees are learning the basic fundamentals of the sport: holding a lacrosse stick, throwing and catching with a lacrosse stick, and shooting into a net. Prior to taking part in the clinic, none of the girls at the July 8 session had ever picked up a lacrosse stick. However, the girls were doing a great job. “I noticed that they were actually catching and throwing and delivering the ball into the goal,” said Pearson. “The instruction is awesome. They are all very good teachers.”
Jarrott Lee said his role was to support his two daughters and Lennon as they teach the clinic. He mentioned that other surrounding towns such as Glen Ridge, Montclair, West Orange and Irvington, have girls’ lacrosse programs. In fact, Irvington started its program last year. With this in mind, Layton and Hunter wanted to help start a clinic in East Orange, ultimately bringing more diversity to a sport they have played for many years.
“We noticed that we have not played against many girls of color during our lacrosse careers,” said Layton Lee.
“We want to introduce the sport to a town that has yet to form a recreational program. Hopefully, we can expose girls to a sport they otherwise would not have known,” said Hunter Lee.
The Lees, who also attend New Hope Baptist Church in East Orange, think there is great potential for lacrosse to thrive in the town. “The interest is there,” Jarrott Lee said. “It just made perfect sense, since the surrounding towns all have lacrosse as a great activity…[and give] the girls another avenue to exercise in the springtime. ”
To sign up for the clinic, call the recreation department at 973-414-4141.

What consistency should the stool be? What should be the shape of the chair? How often should a healthy person empty their bowels? So, constipation: what do we know about it?
Stool OK
The frequency of stools varies from person to person and can vary considerably, from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. Normally, the stool has a relatively soft texture, is formed, defecation (the process of emptying the intestines) does not cause difficulty or pain. Doctors use the so-called Bristol scale, according to which 7 types of stool are observed 1 . The frequency, shape and consistency of stools depend on the diet and fluid intake, food composition, hormonal levels, genetic characteristics, as well as on the sex and age of the person. In men, stools are softer, larger in volume, and bowel movements are on average more frequent than in women 2 .
The most physiological is the morning bowel movement. This is due to the following reasons:
- completion of the transit of feces along the intestines during the night;
- their accumulation in the lower sections of the large intestine and rectum;
- transition to a vertical position, in which the pressure of the contents of the intestine on the receptors causes a natural urge to defecate;
- higher levels of adrenergic activity in the morning, which leads to relaxation of the rectum 3 .
Symptoms and diagnosis of constipation
Chronic constipation is widespread, affecting 3 to 27% of the population in developed countries 4 .
Constipation may be episodic due to short-term causes (traveler’s constipation, pregnancy, bed rest, drugs, stress) or chronic, lasting more than 3 months 3, 5 .
Causes of constipation
Constipation is functional, that is, in which there are no serious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In other cases, constipation accompanies various diseases, which were its root cause, that is, it is a symptom, a sign, and not an independent condition.
The reason for the development of functional constipation is a violation of intestinal motility, slowing down the transit of its contents. Such constipation is more common in women 6 , perhaps this is partly due to the influence of female sex hormones on intestinal motility. Among the reasons also called a violation of the sensitivity of the receptors of the small pelvis, the anorectal zone, which is manifested in a decrease in the urge to defecate.
It is impossible to overestimate the role of intestinal microflora in the formation of normal stool. Microorganisms that inhabit the intestines are involved in the breakdown of dietary fiber, their metabolites provide energy to the intestinal cells, and also prevent the colonization of the intestine by pathogenic flora. If the balance of microflora is disturbed, the reproduction of pathogenic bacteria and the inhibition of beneficial strains leads to disruption of the intestinal epithelium, indirectly affects the nervous regulation of intestinal tone and motility 3, 5 .
Constipation in children
The current definition of constipation in an infant is generally to mean a combination of infrequent stools (2 or less times a week) with difficulty or pain in defecation that persists for at least a month . In older children, infrequent stools are no longer a mandatory sign of functional constipation and its diagnosis can be made when stools are present 2 or more times a week in combination with other signs 7 .
Functional constipation accounts for a significant proportion in children. The development of constipation can be caused by disturbances in the autonomic nervous system, the peculiarities of the child’s nutrition, and disturbances in the composition of the intestinal microflora. Constipation in children, especially chronic ones, can lead to behavioral disorders, cause duodenogastric and gastroesophageal reflux, heartburn, lead to intoxication of the child’s body 8 .
Therapeutic approaches in the treatment of constipation
One of the key places in the treatment is the correction of nutrition with an increase in the proportion of dietary fiber in the diet. It is important to follow a diet with enough fruits and vegetables. If there are no contraindications due to other concomitant diseases, the amount of fluid consumed should be increased.
Among the drugs can be called laxatives, drugs that increase the peristaltic activity of the intestine by stimulating the nerve endings of the mucosa. In recent years, more and more doctors in the treatment of constipation have resorted to prescribing drugs that restore the balance of intestinal microflora 2-5, 8 .
Hilak forte for constipation
Hilak forte regulates the balance of intestinal microflora and normalizes its composition ococcus and two species of lactobacilli).
