Jemele Hill, Cari Champion Host ‘Stick to Sports,’ New Show on VICE TV
- Jemele Hill and Cari Champion are debuting their new VICE TV show, “Stick to Sports,” Wednesday at 10 p.m.
- The ESPN alums will put their friendship on full display each week as they discuss current events in politics, entertainment, pop culture, and — of course — sports.
- Hill and Champion spoke to Insider about the freedom that comes with creative autonomy, the importance of having the perspectives of two Black women broadcast on television, and what they hope viewers will take from the show.
- Visit Insider’s homepage for more stories.
Jemele Hill and Cari Champion want to get real.
You may recognize the duo from their many years on screen at ESPN. But despite seeing them day-in and day-out on “SportsCenter” and a variety of the network’s other shows, you still may not have a true sense of who they are — not
“What’s so funny is that anybody who knows me would watch ESPN and be like, ‘they don’t let you be you,'” Champion told Insider. “You seem so refined.”
So after a combined 18 years working for the Disney subsidiary, Champion and Hill were ready for their next TV venture — and ready for an opportunity to let their authentic personalities shine through on the small screen.
“The reality is that I often give my opinion and I am, I think, funny and boisterous and charismatic,” Champion said. “I love to have a good time and I try to go in light on all situations.”
“And so I’m excited that people can finally see that,” she added.
Hill and Champion have joined forces to produce and host “Stick to Sports,” a weekly late-night VICE TV show in which they’ll talk about — well, whatever they want to discuss. Though the show’s title alludes to Fox News host Laura Ingraham and others who believe figures in the sports world should not venture outside the realm of athletics, both women have vowed to delve into news, politics, entertainment, as pop culture as well. As longtime friends from their days at ESPN, they hope to do so through their humor and jovial report.
For Hill in particular, having the opportunity to showcase her unfiltered thoughts and opinions to the public comes as a breath of fresh air. She endured a tumultuous — and very public — departure from ESPN shortly after the network suspended her for denouncing President Donald Trump in a series of tweets back in the fall of 2017.
That incident — combined with her inclination to speak out against injustice and well-documented allyship with former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick — has led the public to misunderstand Hill, she says.
“People have this mistaken characterization of me,” Hill said. “[They] think that I’m just super serious all the time and I walk around looking to protest. I take issues of equality and social justice very seriously — don’t get me wrong — but anybody who knows me knows that I’m a very laid back, even, fun person. So I think that side of my personality will probably be displayed a lot more than it has been.”
And just from the teasers VICE has released, it’s clear that her charm shines through.
In one clip, Hill rebuffs Champion’s question about whether or not she’s ever dated a white man with a flippant “Cari, that’s not the point.” In another, she calls her co-host a “Russian bot” after Champion jokingly accused her of thinking “everything is racist.”
—VICE TV (@VICETV) August 13, 2020
But just because the show is often lighthearted in nature, that doesn’t mean Hill and Champion will shy away from deeper, more consequential topics. Nor will they avoid discussing their identities and experiences as two Black women working in a white, male-dominated industry.Jasmine Durhal/VICE
“We’re also just ready to step into our power.”
And so they will. “Stick to Sports” premieres on VICE TV Wednesday night at 10 p.m.

Stick to sports.
It’s an age-old adage that we’ve heard time and time again.
Yet oddly enough, while LeBron James and Kevin Durant were lambasted for speaking out against Donald Trump’s tyranny, Laura Ingraham, the same Fox News host that told them to “shut up and dribble,” had an entirely different response in June when NFL star Drew Brees spoke out against kneeling during the national anthem.
According to Ingraham, the future Hall of Fame quarterback should be “allowed to have his view of what kneeling and the flag mean to him.” She also wasn’t feeling the “scalding cauldron of hate” that Brees, proud owner of the complexion for protection, was subjected to after expressing his opinion outside of sports.
“This is beyond football, though,” she said on The Ingraham Angle. “This is totalitarian conduct. This is Stalinist.”
G/O Media may get a commission
No stranger to a similar degree of opportunistic scorn is Jemele Hill. In 2017, her former employer, ESPN, suspended her for calling out Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after he threatened to bench any player who took a knee during the national anthem.
The award-winning journalist sure as hell didn’t stick to sports then, or now, with her and Cari Champion’s new show, Stick to Sports, set to debut Wednesday on Vice TV nearly three years later, that modus operandi remains the same.
“What comes to mind is liars,” Hill told The Root, in discussing how she feels about the phrase “stick to sports.”
“They’re lying because they’re just being dishonest. The whole mentality behind it always came from a disingenuous place. It usually came from people who were uncomfortable with the idea of opinions being expressed that differed from their own.
“Also historically, when it comes to Black athletes and just Black people period, they’ve always wanted us to stay in grateful mode and to ‘know our place.’ ‘Stick to sports’ was always an insult, frankly, because of who it was always directed at. This is our opportunity to rub that phrase in people’s faces because we plan to do everything but stick to sports.”
If Hill and Champion’s family reunion on-screen comes as a surprise, it shouldn’t. The two forged an inseparable bond during their days at ESPN and were often seen not only hanging out together around ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., campus, but unknowingly putting their chemistry to the test on the social media.
“This show is the intersection of it all,” Champion told The Root. “Sports, culture, politics, entertainment. We will meet in the middle. And they’ve always gone together. There’s always a commonality among those ideals and those topics, we just haven’t been able to explore it.”
The Stick to Sports co-hosts are also mindful of the cultural impact and irrefutable influence that Black women collectively wield, but that is far too often suppressed or misappropriated.
“I think it’s a beautiful thing right now that Black women are being able to be unapologetic about their excellence and being unapologetic about their intelligence,” Champion said. “It’s not an anomaly, it’s very common. And now the world gets to see how common it is for us to actually lead the conversation. I can’t think of any other show that has two Black women leading the conversation.
“Jemele and I are the definition of ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps.’ But like Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘It’s unfair to say that to a shoeless man.’ And while we may have been shoeless, we pulled ourselves up. And now we’re going to show the world what they have been missing and what they’re entitled to as well. There needs to be equity in every aspect.”
“We’re basically just trying to mirror the condition of Black women in this country,” Hill added. “We’ve gotten to a point where we’ve all drawn a line and said, ‘Enough.’ In many ways, we’re the conscience of America, but this is now a power that we need to see for ourselves.”

In learning from their previous experiences at ESPN, they’ve also made it a point to approach their latest endeavor as entrepreneurs as opposed to merely just talent.
“There were some valuable lessons and input we were able to learn from being at a place like ESPN,” Hill said. “The difference between when we last launched a show individually is that we weren’t necessarily business owners then, and now we’re both business owners. So we’re coming into a show approaching it as not just the talent, but entrepreneurs of the show itself. So that has added a more exciting and exhilarating wrinkle to what we’re doing. There’s a certain amount of control that we’re required to have now that probably two years ago it wouldn’t have been the same requirement.”
And in being mindful of that growth, they also had some advice for other Black journalists, especially women, looking to follow in their footsteps.
“Never, ever, ever become a possession of a company, or an entity, or an idea that is not yours,” Champion said. “Whenever you stay focused on whatever the mission is for your career, for your life, for your passion, you will always be empowered. Don’t get caught up in all the hype of what someone else is selling. Don’t forget where your power really is.”
She stressed: “My power is in telling the stories of other Brown and Black women who look like me. My power is in ensuring that these women have an opportunity to do the things I wasn’t allowed to do. And for me, to hold the door open, to usher them through the way Jemele did me when I was at ESPN. That’s where your power is.”
“I think we need to understand that helping others does not make you less powerful,” Hill concluded. “I think we get conditioned that any opportunity that another Black woman gets is less of an opportunity for us. We can all eat at the same table. And we are much stronger in engaging in collective support as opposed to undermining each other along the way. We can’t get caught up in this mindset that there can only be one of us that succeeds. We have to be invested as a group and more than just individuals.”
Stick to Sports premieres August 19 on Vice TV.
LeBron James to Appear on Pilot Episode of ‘Stick to Sports’ With Cari Champion and Jemele Hill
On Wednesday, Cari Champion and Jemele Hill will premiere their new show, Stick to Sports on Vice TV. Champion told Bomani Jones on an episode of his podcast she and Hill came up with the show after Champion chose to leave ESPN in January. Champion apparently showed up at Hill’s door with a bottle of wine and a camera crew to film the pilot. When asked what kind of topics the two planned to cover in an interview with Vice, Champion had the following to say:
“I know we’re dealing with the racial inequities in our world, but we all put our pants on the same. We all get sick, we all cry, we all love. The goal is to break down that barrier. I’m so tired of hearing what people think what Black women are, what Black people are. And same for me. I have real, valid issues—which may not be—with white women, or white people. And I want to be wrong. I want to have guests on to change my opinion.”– Cari Champion via Vice
Champion also told Jones on his podcast that they want to address topics they couldn’t touch while employees at “the four letters.” Hill said the show is a big “f–k you” to all the people who told her to stick to sports over the last few years.
It should be quite something. The pair went on Good Morning America on Monday to discuss Wednesday’s premiere and revealed they have quite a big name as their first guest for the series: one LeBron James, the target of the original “shut up and dribble” comment that started the firestorm of calls for athletes and media members to stick to sports.
We’re talking to @CariChampion and @jemelehill about their new late night show #StickToSports that will deal with how sports intersects with politics, race, gender and pop culture. pic.twitter.com/UrK6I6zvMw— Good Morning America (@GMA) August 17, 2020
“I think we’re going to have everything that says you shouldn’t ‘stick to sports,'” said Champion when asked by Robin Roberts what viewers should expect from their program. “I think our first guest, he is probably the poster child for ‘stick to sports.’ We’ll have LeBron James on. He has so many wonderful initiatives happening right now. ‘More Than a Vote,’ he’ll talk about that and what that community is trying to be doing and most importantly what they’re expected to do, which is to really talk about voter suppression and stop it. So that’s one of our guests for our premiere episode, Robin.”
LeBron is a huge name to get for the first episode, obviously, and his relevance to what the show is all about will make his presence even more impactful. It should start Stick to Sports off with quite a bang.
Fight Night Champion Blog – Controls Tutorial
Hey everyone! I hope you’re all excited about the upcoming release of Fight Night Champion coming March 1st and ready to experience the best boxing game ever made! Can’t wait for March 1st? In that case, look out for the Fight Night Champion Demo releasing in the first week of February on XBOX LIVE and on the PLAYSTATION NETWORK!
As the game will feature an all-new control scheme titled Full Spectrum Punch Control, I wanted to outline the controls for those new to the game and for those returning to highlight the changes.
Full Spectrum Punch Control
Simply put, FSPC allows you to use the Right Stick to throw punches. Flicking the Right Stick to the Left will throw punches with your left hand, while flicking the Right Stick to the Right will throw punches with your right hand.
When you flick the stick at different angles, the boxer will throw different punches. Flicking the Right Stick Upwards will throw Straight punches, flicking the Right Stick to the Side will throw Hooking punches and flicking the Right Stick Downwards will throw Uppercut punches. As you flick the Right
Stick in different directions, the boxer will throw a variety of Straights, Overhand Hooks, Hooks, Hookercut andUppercut punches.
To throw any of these punches to the body, simply hold down the Lean/Body Punch Modifier. If you are Leaning Forward your punches will go to the body. If you are Leaning Backward or to the Side, your punches will go to the head.
To add a more Power to your punches hold down the Heavy Punch Modifier. Any punch can be thrown heavy, including your Straight punches. Heavy punches do more damage, but take more energy and are a little slower to reach the target and string together in combination.
If punching with the Right Stick doesn’t suit you. The Face Buttons can be used to throw the basic Straights, Hooks andUppercut punches also. Use the Body Punch Modifier and Heavy Punch Modifier with the face buttons the same way you would with the Right Stick.
Stepping Punches can be used close the distance to your opponent with an attack. Pushing Towards the opponent with the Left Stick and Punching will automatically perform a Stepping Punch if the opponent is outside your punching range.
Stepping Punches also do a little more damage because of the increased body weight behind them, but they can be easy to see coming, defended and possibly countered.
Counter Punching is a very effective weapon in Fight Night Champion. Catching your opponent when most vulnerable means your punches do more damage. Use defensive techniques to avoid or deflect your opponent’s attack and counter them before they’ve recovered.
Blocking, leaning, weaving and stepping (below) can all be used to make your opponent miss and create opening for a counterpunch.
Everything a boxer does in the ring requires Stamina. The Stamina Meter displays the boxer’s Current andMaximum Stamina Levels. The Current Stamina Level is displayed in Yellow. The Maximum Stamina Level is displayed in Black.
Current Stamina depletes and regenerates quickly, allowing a boxer to fight with optimum efficiency in short bursts. Maximum Stamina depletes slowly and only regenerates between rounds. The amount of Maximum Stamina recovered between rounds is affected by the level of exertion in the previous round.
Reflexive Blocking is a new blocking system for Fight Night Champion. There are 2 types of reflexes involved with Reflexive Blocking: yours and your boxer’s.
Your reflexes are involved if you want to anticipate or react to your opponent’s attack and press Block. If you are quick enough, you will Block the punch and create a very brief Counter Punch opportunity.
Your boxer’s reflexes come into play if you want to Cover Up. Each boxer’s Reflexes and Block Strength ratings determine their proficiency at reacting to incoming punches. The longer you Cover Up, the more your Block Strength and Reflexes will decay, meaning that punches will more frequently penetrate your guard. Also, Movement Speed is slightly slower if you are Covering Up.
In both cases, there is no need to choose a blocking direction. If you or your boxer’s Reflexes are up to the task your boxer will move their arms to the right spot. This allows you to throw punches while holding down the Block, making the transition from Defense to Offensive a little quicker.
Head Movement allows you to Slip, Duck andAvoid incoming punches. To move your head, Hold Down the Lean Modifier and use the Left Stick. Holding Down the Lean Modifier will plant your boxer’s feet, so you can’t move around the ring and move your head simultaneously.
Making your opponent miss by moving your head out of the way of an incoming punch will create a very brief Counter Punch opportunity.
Weaving and Stepping
Moving your feet is just as important as moving your head and your hands. A variety of Weaves and Steps can be performed using the Left Stick.
To perform a Weave, Move the Left Stick in a Clockwise or Counter-Clockwise direction Towards Your Opponent. Your boxer will step forward and move their head from side-to-side. Weaves allow you to close the distance to your opponent and avoid incoming fire.
Quick Steps Forward, Backward and to either Side can be performed by Flicking the Left Stick in those directions. Side Steps can be particularly effective in avoiding punches and keeps you in striking range for a Counter Punch.
Clinching and Pushing
Clinching can be used to tie your opponent up and prevent them from throwing punches. To Clinch press the Push and Heavy Punch Modifier buttons at the same time. Timing is essential to successful clinching. If your opponent is in midst of punching a Clinch attempt will fail.
Pushing can be used to get separation between you and your opponent or to break out of a clinch if your opponent has grabbed you. To Push, press the Push Button.
One good punch can still put you on the canvas. If you’re not knocked out cold, you’ll be in the Get-Up Game.
To start Getting Up, Push to the Left or Right on the Left Stick to orient your boxer’s perspective. Once you’ve centered your vision, Push and Hold Up on the Right Stick to stand up.
The more times you’ve been knocked down, the tougher it gets to center your perspective and keep your balance once you’re there. Don’t rush it if you have been on the canvas more than once.90,000 Montreal survived thanks to a goal from Romanov. Tampa Championship Parade postponed
& laquo; Montreal & raquo; & nbsp; & mdash; Tampa Bay & nbsp; & mdash; 3: 2 (OT)
Before the fourth game the finale was foreshadowed by a great holiday from everywhere. The mayor of Tampa called the team do not rush to win the series in order to win the title in front of your fans. Lightning coach John Cooper came to the press conference wearing his favorite T-shirt. metal gang. And Dominique Ducharm, meanwhile, was preparing changes in the Montreal squad. Shook up everyone except the fourth link. Alexander Romanov made his debut in the final series in the third pair with Brett Fist.
Nothing new at first. “Montreal” I made a lot of mistakes and brought them when leaving the zone. “Tampa” has accumulated all the strength, to take the lead in the decisive match:
- 20-5 on unblocked shots
- 12-5 on shots on target
- Control of 83% of expected goals
However, they threw “lightning” far from being as effective as during the streak – even from vantage points.Point loaded into the bar, Kucherov lubricated a couple of good one-timers in the near corner. In the diagram, misses are indicated in orange.
It took Montreal two shots on target to secure their first lead in the streak.
Josh Anderson stuck after the virtuoso game of Nick Suzuki:
Before the return goal, the “hubs” played enthusiastically and more reminiscent of themselves from previous rounds. Caught skating and dictating the pace instead of waiting for something to happen bad.Shea Weber turned on the berserk mode almost knocked out Braden Point; Chiaro, Romanov and Staal gave a powerful physical presence on the set.
Veteran Ryan McDonagh heroically changed the course of the game: in nine seconds he organized an interception, distracted defender and subtly left the puck on an empty net to Barclay Goodrow.
Russian defender Alexander Romanov coped faster. Rolled out on shift, got the puck, threw. Inscribed his name in history as Montreal’s youngest defender to score in a Stanley Cup final – 21 years and 180 days. The previous time Romanov scored points on February 25.
In a fire situation, “Tampa” rescued stock. Matthew Joseph appeared in place of the injured Alex Killorn and played an episode at the level of a top-6 striker of any decent league team:
Many noted that Romanov played uncertainly, but Brett Fist was catching up with Maroon due to the fact that he lost the fight in the middle zone.
Kucherov could have finished all the controversy about the Conn Smythe Trophy two and a half minutes before the end of : cut into the post after the McDonagh diagonal.A minute before the end, “Tampa” received a luxurious a gift from Shea Weber. He swung his club in the face of Chamber and got a double fine.
Carey’s Desperate Performance Price at the gate saved Montreal in the minority for the entire game. The guests did not realize a single attempt out of five.
“Our minority was outstanding throughout the playoffs, ”said Josh Anderson after the game. We believed in each other, did not give up. It was necessary to fulfill, and I think we did phenomenal work. “
Carey Price had problems in the final series, but played excellently in the minority.
Before the final, the Lightning scored 30% of their shots when playing too much. Against Price – 11%.
Josh Anderson heroically pulled out the game in overtime. He took the puck, dragged it across the entire area and finished it off.
“We didn’t want to finish everything today, in front of our fans, ”concluded Anderson. “We expected to go to Tampa tomorrow. We packed our luggage this afternoon. There was a feeling that we will win. ”
The final series returns to Florida.
Son of Valery Kharlamov: There are still several KOHO clubs with the inscription “Kharlamov” at home
On August 27, 1981, at the 74th kilometer of the Leningradskoye Highway, Valery Kharlamov died in a car accident. Thirty years have passed, but the name of the great striker CSKA and the USSR national team is constantly heard. A lot of books and articles have been written about Kharlamov, films have been made.It seems that something new cannot be added. The son of the legendary striker of CSKA and the USSR national team Valery Kharlamov, Alexander spoke about his father.
– I was not even six years old then, I did not understand a lot. We were a big family on vacation at our dacha in Pokrovka. Dad arrived on August 26th. The weather turned bad: rain, wind, cold. Everyone wanted to return to Moscow in the morning. But my father had a training session planned for this day at CSKA, in Leningradka. How can everyone fit in his Volga? So we stayed.Mom and dad and her cousin got into the car. Father was driving. He was not in a good mood, he did not sleep most of the night. I was worried that I was not taken to the Canada Cup. However, I tried not to show it. Before entering the highway, he gave up the steering wheel to his mother. I wanted to take a nap …
And in the afternoon the police came to our dacha. She was met by her grandmother. My sister and I – she was very young – were not told anything. They took me to Moscow. I was not at the funeral. But I understood everything. They did not try to deceive me – to say that my father and mother had gone somewhere for a long time.True, then all this was perceived as a child.
Many people gathered for forty days – friends of my father. The closest to me were Vyacheslav Fetisov , Alexey Kasatonov , Vladimir Krutov , Nikolai Domoratsky , who now runs the Olympic base in Novogorsk.
– Father often put me behind the wheel. How much we drove! We even got into a small accident. I remember they gave a car in the ass …
On the road, dad, like on ice, was unstoppable, he loved speed.Once we rushed from Moscow to the dacha – which is about 80 kilometers – in 45 minutes. To settle conflicts with traffic cops, he always had several branded golf clubs in his trunk. And then there was a terrible deficit. But the militiamen recognized him. Somehow a patrol car honks us and asks us to stop. When they saw who was driving, they offered to accompany us home. We turned on the flashing light and went with an escort!
What happened to my father’s Volga with the number 00-17 after the fatal accident? It stood, rusted in the garage, and then it was sold.
Father and his teammates had no problems with clubs. Firms themselves sent our stars to advertise their goods. There are still several KOHO clubs with the inscription “Kharlamov” at home.
Once my father took the subway. I came home and said: “That’s it, no more foot in the subway.” What were they doing to him there? Did they take autographs, did they talk about life?
– Dad was considered an ardent music lover. From foreign trips he constantly brought tape recorders and other equipment. Even I had a small cassette player, a gift from Japan. And, of course, my father bought vinyl records. Dozens. They still remain. They lie somewhere, gathering dust. But we never had bobbins. I remember there was a huge music center at home. Giant stereo speakers.
Listened to what? Yes all. My father especially liked ABBA, “Boni M” and the Italians, which were popular at that time. In the late 70s, the Boney M group arrived in Moscow, and my dad took me to a concert. Four-year-old boy! Introduced to music. The excitement was crazy. Tickets are not available. The horse militia had to disperse the people. Just like a stadium. I don’t remember the concert itself, only bright multi-colored lights remained in my memory.
– In 2005, they called from Toronto and said that my father was being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and that I was being invited to the ceremony. Everything went great, it was very touching. Then we were given a tour of the Hall of Fame. I was genuinely amazed at the Canadians’ love of hockey. We stopped at the exhibition dedicated to Paul Henderson’s decisive goal in Super Series-72.We were told that at the auction, the jersey in which Henderson scored the puck went for a million dollars. The person who acquired the relic did not hide it in a private museum from prying eyes, but brought it all over Canada. So that people know and honor their history.
That would be the case with us. And then they promised to create a museum of Russian hockey glory, but a good undertaking stalled. Maybe the KHL will take up this case? I am ready to donate my father’s sweater and club to our museum.
And recently I read that Tatyana Anatolyevna Tarasova is going to pick up her father’s sports awards from the museum of army sports, which, by the way, is not bad.I think not without reason.
– I have been playing for CSKA since 1992. He made his debut as a 17-year-old boy. They gave me my father’s number 17, under which no one now plays either in CSKA or in the national team. Before that season, all the leaders left the team at once. The most experienced were Vyacheslav Butsaev and Andrey Kovalenko . They were 22 years old. Soon they left too. And before the season, Valera Karpov came to us from Chelyabinsk . I played a few matches, looked at it and also gave a fight. “I came to CSKA to study, not teach young people,” he said in parting.
The fans treated me warmly. They knew that I was Kharlamov’s son. But I didn’t want to ride on the authority of my father. After all, he scored 8 goals in a season. Not the worst result in the team.
A funny story came out with a commercial in which I starred with Viktor Vasilyevich Tikhonov . It was played on TV for a long time. We rolled cough drops. According to the script, the coach commands in a hoarse voice: “Sasha, drop it!” In response, I have to say: “Yes, Viktor Vasilyevich!”Tikhonov was not on the set, and the guys and I skated in front of the cameras for an hour.
When the video came out, I had no time for laughter. At the gate, as soon as I got the puck, the audience shouted: “Sasha, throw it!” I was angry. Once, on order, he threw the devil knows where and scored. The stands immediately fell silent …
It was a merry time – the first half of the 90s. When the Americans came to CSKA – we became related with the Penguins from Pittsburgh – there were no empty seats in the stands. Even if our young team did not occupy high places, they played with their hearts.
Once in Luzhniki we play against the champion Dynamo. We are holding on for the whole match – 0: 0. And in overtime I’m Zhenya Nabokov push the puck between the shields. We are given double bonuses, and Tikhonov praises: “Well done, Kharlamov! All in the father! “.
– Two years ago the TV movie “Valery Kharlamov. Additional time”. The father was played by actor Alexei Chadov. It is surprising that the creators of this tape did not even consult with me. I called them myself. “Where did you get the script?” – “According to the archives.”But this is a repetition of the past. It’s a good idea, but the approach is superficial …
Now they are finishing shooting the second film. Artistic, with a reasonable budget. For four whole years, the scenario was coordinated. The project is being handled by Nikita Mikhalkov’s studio, and that speaks for itself. Filming has been going on for two months and should end on December 15th. The role of the father is played by Danila Kozlovsky, and Tarasova – Oleg Menshikov. Even I was given a cameo role – a hockey player in Chebarkul, where my father was sent to gain wisdom.
Mikhalkov immediately said: “We don’t know how to shoot hockey.” Therefore, all hockey scenes are filmed by Canadians and Americans. In Minsk, at the new 15,000-seat arena. It was allegedly built according to the project of the Montreal “Forum”.
It amazes me how Kozlovsky reacted to the work. Danila, it seems, when he goes to bed, puts the script under the pillow. The film is fictional, not biographical. So wait for the premiere in spring or summer. Maybe they will show it for the anniversary of the Super Series-72.
Special thanks to Soviet Sport for the Kharlamov Trophy campaign. This prize is awarded to the best Russian NHL player, and our guys from the NHL vote. When I can, I come to the awards with pleasure.

CUP OF EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS
EVENT OF THE DAY
Congratulations there is a champion of Russia twice “.Defeats on all fronts – Youth World Cup, European Cups, World Cup and World Cup … How tired we are of failures! Thank you, “hawks”, for this feeling: Russia is the best again!
… After the “golden” goal by Jaromir Jagr , a lot of Vanguard players started on the court. Gloves, clubs, helmets flew into the air … The audience roared with delight: “We are the champions!” To a storm of applause, Avangard captain Oleg Tverdovsky was handed over the gold Champions Cup. Tverdovsky triumphantly shakes it over his head, kisses it and hands it over to coach Valery Belousov .Goalkeeper Norma Marakla , then defender … Josef Boumedienne from Karpät are invited to award the best players of the tournament. The fans are indignant: “The best is Tverdovsky!” Who is the forward? Of course, Sushinsky ! Confused Maxim rolls out for a box with a prize. Before he has time to complete a mini-lap of honor, he is again called up for rewarding – as the most valuable player and the top scorer of the Champions Cup. The St. Petersburg audience is sobbing with happiness.
A crowd of players, coaches, journalists pours into the Avangard dressing room. The latter are asked to leave for five minutes: now the Governor of the Omsk Region Leonid Polezhaev will make a speech. What the “Omsk dad”, as Polezhaev is sometimes called in the press, is talking about is not heard. But it is clear from the governor’s gestures: something big, solemn.
“Well done, guys!” – Czech Jaroslav Bednarzh congratulates the twice champions. Then he goes to hug with his friend Jagr. Happy Andrey Kovalenko shouts to the entire dressing room: “Hello, Heikkilä !” The subtext of the slogan is clear: Finnish Lokomotiv mentor Kari Heikkila, who previously headed Karpyat, in fact, survived Kovalenko from the Yaroslavl club, with which he twice became the champion.Well, revenge is a dish served cold.
They shout from the corridor: “Does anyone need an ambulance?” Thank God, everyone’s nerves are strong, although a lot of them were battered in the final. Dmitry Zatonsky blinks at the glitter of the gold medal: “Good, infection! Expensive!”
Alexander Yudin enters the locker room – tough guy defender who lives in St. Petersburg and recently played for Avangard. “I’m for a couple of minutes,” Yudin says apologetically.- Just congratulate the guys. Well done! ”
– Imagine, I have five such medals, – Dmitry Ryabykin turns to Zatonsky. – I won with Dynamo in Europe. All are silver. And here it is, the first gold one. From the tired smile of the defender, who, due to the trauma that tormented him, went out onto the ice through pain, one cannot say that he is the happiest person on earth. But what is the most courageous and patient – for sure.
Tverdovsky appears. In a circle he congratulates the guys again.Jagr is the last to sit. “Bright! We are champions!” The two Stanley Cup winners hug tightly. They are doused with champagne, from which shoes stick to the floor throughout the locker room.
How we missed such a holiday!
Stick and Mace Masters – VTB – Kommersant
The Russian national ice hockey team became the laureate of the May rating of Kommersant and JSC VTB Bank, which determines the best team of each month in the country, despite the fact that it did not defend the champion title at the world championship in the Czech Republic, losing in the final to Canadians …In a bitter struggle, she bypassed, as usual, the excellent Russian gymnasts – “artists” who triumphantly performed at the European championship in Minsk.
May is not the poorest month for sporting events, but we are mainly talking about events that directly relate not to Russian, but to foreign teams. Such as, for example, the decisive matches of the football Champions League, which domestic clubs are not yet able to reach.
In the last spring month, a big sporting event took place, the interest in which in Russia is undoubtedly higher than in any other international championship. This is the hockey world championship, which this time was hosted by the Czech Republic. The Russian national team went to it in the rank of the winner of the previous, Minsk championship, and if it defended the title, success in the ranking would be guaranteed to it.
And everything went well for her until the final match. The Russian national team walked the distance, not paying attention to injuries of the leading players, to misfires in the group in matches with the Americans and Finns. In the quarterfinals, she broke the highly regarded Swedes, in the semifinals, waiting for her brightest star Alexander Ovechkin to arrive from the NHL, she took revenge on the American team. There was only one match left to win.
But this barrier turned out to be too strong for the Russian national team. The Canadians in the Czech Republic were incredibly strong – about as strong as the Russians a year ago in Minsk. They took the title from its holders, defeating them with a score of 6: 1. So the Russian hockey players, who in a year will have a chance to rehabilitate themselves at the home championship (Moscow and St. Petersburg will host it), received not 15, but 12 points in the classification. All the same, of course, a solid figure, but not enough to win an unambiguous, without competition, rating victory.
For example, at the beginning of the month in the same city where the triumph of Russian ice hockey took place last year, the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship ended. Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that has been Russia’s undisputed pride for over a decade. The team of her “artists” under the guidance of the great coach Irina Viner is two buildings ahead of the rest of the world both in terms of the complexity of the programs and in terms of results.
The team confirmed in Minsk that the situation has not changed at all.She performed, one might say, on someone else’s site – on the site of her main rivals. But in the end, she presented her Belarusian rivals with only one gold award out of seven at stake. And that hostess was taken away in competitions not for adult athletes, but for juniors.
As for the elite tournament, the Russian team took all five top awards. And the undisputed heroine of the championship was yesterday’s junior – 17-year-old Yana Kudryavtseva. She helped the national team win the team all-around and added four gold in exercises with objects – ball, clubs and ribbon. The only discipline in which Kudryavtseva failed to secure the right to climb to the top step of the podium was exercises with a hoop. Her compatriot Margarita Mamun was the best in them.
All in all, an amazing performance. True, such Russian gymnasts have actually put them on stream, but for their impeccable performance, we considered it necessary to supplement their basic top ten with a bonus point.
Basketball players from CSKA Moscow could be next to the ice hockey and rhythmic gymnastics teams. In order for this to happen, they were required to interrupt an unpleasant tradition. In this decade, the flagship of Russian basketball is constantly reaching the Final Four of the main European Cup – the Euroleague, but cannot win the trophy in any way, allowing offensive misfires.
Alas, the army team made such a misfire for the fourth time in a row. In the semifinal match of the Berlin Final Four, they stumbled upon the Greek Olympiacos, which had already stopped CSKA twice on the near approaches to the title, and again lost to him.Only two points, but what’s the difference? So CSKA was content with the third place in the Euroleague and could not count on a decent bonus. The basis of his rating was the points for the excellent performance in the VTB United League playoffs (the army team, having defeated Nizhny Novgorod, reached the final). But they were still not enough to climb to the top of the classification.
The Russian football season ended in May, and, naturally, the rating could not do without footballers either. Moreover, the time has come for the distribution of bonuses. They were received by three clubs: Zenit – for winning gold in the Russian championship, CSKA – for taking second place, and therefore, got a ticket to the Champions League, a tournament desirable for everyone, and Lokomotiv – for winning in the final of the Cup of the country over “Kuban”, which brightened up, to put it mildly, a crumpled season.
“Zenith”, in principle, with its five bonus points, could not just stand next to, but maybe even ahead of the frontmen of the May rating. But he secured the gold awards in advance, and spent the remaining rounds of the championship carelessly, handing over generous gifts to the middle peasants. So he didn’t manage to climb high.90,000 Russian field hockey champions presented Rustam Minnikhanov with a winning stick
(Kazan, October 18, Tatar-inform, Arseny Mavrin). The Kazan Kremlin today honored the winners of the federal super league in field hockey: the men’s team “Dynamo-Kazan” and the women’s “Dynamo-Giproniiaviaprom”. The assets of the two Tatarstan teams are seventeen championship titles.
“It is gratifying that the women’s team“ Dynamo-Giproniiaviaprom ”has joined the already familiar victories of the men’s team this year,” Rustam Minnikhanov stressed, welcoming the champions.“I want to express my deep gratitude for your hard, creative work that led to these victories.”
The republic appreciated the achievement of athletes: the head coach of the women’s team Valentina Apelganets was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Physical Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan. The team director Elena Salova and three sportsmen-instructors: Yulia Ashurova, Tamara Ivanova and Evgenia Sorokina were awarded medals of the Republic of Tatarstan “For Valiant Labor”. The entire team of “Dynamo-Giproniiaviaprom” and its players were awarded the Commendation of the President of Tatarstan. The awards were presented by Rustam Minnikhanov.
“To achieve a result in sports, three components are needed: funds, base and personnel. Tatarstan has it all. The republic is rich in victories, and I am grateful that I work here, benefiting both Russian sports and the Republic of Tatarstan, ”stressed the head coach of Dynamo-Giproniiaviaprom Valentina Apelganets.
And the team captain Irina Osipova presented the President of Tatarstan with a present: a general photo of the new champions of Russia in the women’s super league and one of the clubs that brought the long-awaited victory.
Medals “For Valiant Labor” were also awarded to sportsmen-instructors of the men’s team “Dynamo-Kazan” Pavel Golubev and Dmitry Salov, and the whole team and personally athlete-instructor Alexei Mayorov – Acknowledgments from the President of Tatarstan.
“All our victories are the result of systematic and purposeful work to develop and support sports in the republic. This wise policy is being implemented under your leadership, ”head coach of the team Araik Margaryan addressed Rustam Minnikhanov.
“On behalf of the Russian Field Hockey Federation, I would like to thank you and in your person the whole republic for the conditions that have been created in Tatarstan for the development of our sport,” the President of the RF grass.
Nikolay Aleksandrov presented the leader of the republic with a set of two gold medals, thereby confirming the high contribution of the leadership of Tatarstan to the victories achieved by the teams.
“Today in Tatarstan more than a thousand boys and girls are engaged in field hockey. One of the best centers for training athletes in this sport has been successfully operating in Kazan for more than ten years. Breeding work has been established. Almost three dozen players of the champion teams are graduates of the local field hockey school, ”Rustam Minnikhanov emphasized.
The President of Tatarstan expressed confidence that these victories will not be the last, and that the achievements of the teams will be a good example for the children of the republic. And to make the path to victories even more comfortable, Rustam Minnikhanov presented both teams with certificates for substantial sums – for the purchase of the necessary sports equipment and equipment for training.
A lot has been said about SKA’s misadventures this season. The game of the army under Andrei Nazarov raised very big questions, but even after the dismissal of the mentor in mid-October, there was no instant reincarnation. The current owners of the Gagarin Cup and with Sergei Zubov at the head show hockey far from the championship, but, which is extremely important, at least they began to win more often. So, after the match with HC “Sochi”, the schedule for the team under the leadership of Zubov lined up quite decent: nine wins and four defeats. Moreover, the St. Petersburg club also won two previous meetings with Togliatti Lada and Yaroslavl Lokomotiv (3: 2 in both cases). The fact that Ilya Kovalchuk has finally “woken up” can also be considered a good sign. Until November 19, the SKA captain scored only four goals in 22 matches, but in the last five games he hit the opponents’ goal four more times, and scored ten points in the goal + pass system. In a duel against Sochi, Covey, however, did not demonstrate miracles, but it was he who, with a little over five minutes before the end of the third period, in the majority with a club, corrected the puck against the hosts’ goal and turned the match into overtime. The winning point for SKA was put by Nikita Gusev (pictured).
But overall, the guests were very lucky. They showed an indistinct game, almost the entire meeting was inferior in the score and sinned with a high percentage of rejects. “It was difficult to enter the meeting, at the end of the away series we felt tired,” Zubov summed up the tour.“Despite the bad start, we found the strength, stayed in the game and snatched the victory we needed so much.”
Well, no winners are judged – SKA with 55 points in 35 matches returned to eighth place in the Western Conference. It should be noted the 19-year-old goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin, who played confidently in his debut championship meeting. But Shesterkin’s previous club Spartak Moscow suffered its third defeat in three bullet series of the 2015/16 season. Although, in general, the red and white played a very decent match against the powerful Lokomotiv in Yaroslavl (3: 4).One of the leaders of the current “regular season” did not look too confidently goalkeeper Vitaly Kolesnik. He could not help out his partners after not the most difficult shots of Vsevolod Sorokin and Maxim Potapov, allowing the guests to get ahead in the middle of the third period. However, Vladislav Kartaev from Yaroslave equalized the score in the 52nd minute, and Yegor Averin became the only hockey player in both teams to score a bullet. Spartak is in trouble with this component.
“Our game consisted of two parts: mistakes in defense, which led to conceded goals, and quite good play in attack,” summed up the head coach of the hosts Alexei Kudashov.
The leader of the season CSKA in the match with “Forge” did not even turn on full speed – there was no such need. The result was actually made by one of the best hockey players in the country, Radulov. The striker has a scoring pass to Sergei Andronov and two goals.
Among other events of the day, it is worth highlighting the victory of Novosibirsk Siberia on a visit over Severstal Cherepovets (2: 1) thanks to the accurate shot of the Slovak Andrei Mesarosh in the 44th minute with the majority play. Thus, Siberia did not allow itself to be displaced from the first place in the Eastern Conference by Magnitka, which defeated Neftekhimik (5: 0).After 36 matches, Novosibirsk have 67 points, Magnitogorsk – 64. In addition, Nizhny Novgorod “Torpedo” has not yet signed a contract with the club Nikolai Zherdev at home lost in shootouts to Vladivostok “Admiral” (2: 3), and Minsk “Dynamo” coped with the Khabarovsk “Cupid” (3: 1).
