History of Swax Lax Camp
How’s it going, readers? Let’s take a walk down memory lane and explore the origins and evolution of the incredible Swax Lax Camp. This transformative summer program for South Bronx Prep students has made such a powerful impact, but it started from humble beginnings.
Identifying a Need
Our story starts back in the early 2000s with a group of educators and lacrosse enthusiasts here in NYC. They recognized that many youth in underserved urban communities didn’t have access to summer programs and activities to keep them engaged over vacation.
These visionaries decided to do something about it. They knew that lacrosse was gaining popularity, but the equipment and coaching were often prohibitively expensive for inner city kids. So they came up with the idea of a free lacrosse camp to introduce the sport to urban youth.
Launching Swax Lax
In the summer of 2004, the very first Swax Lax Camp took place with just 15 campers. It was a small operation run by volunteers offering a 1 week “pilot” day camp program. But the impact was immediate and immense.
The campers were hooked after getting to try lacrosse for the first time. The volunteers saw the campers blossoming in confidence, teamwork skills, and love for the sport. It was clear Swax Lax was filling a need in the community.
Growth and Expansion
Over the next decade, word spread about Swax Lax Camp. More campers signed up each summer and volunteers offered their time and equipment. In 2015, Swax Lax registered as an official nonprofit organization.
The camp continued to expand and evolve. 2 week sessions were offered and activities like swimming, arts and crafts were added to the camp day. Field trips to sporting events or college campuses gave campers new experiences.
Seeing the transformation in their kids, parents and families became heavily involved in volunteering. This community support helped Swax Lax grow and enriched the program.
South Bronx Prep Partnership
A major milestone came in 2018 when Swax Lax Camp partnered with South Bronx Prep charter schools. Now the camp could serve even more students right in SBP’s backyard!
With start-up grants and corporate sponsorships, Swax Lax hired more staff, enhanced facilities, and offered scholarships for families. This partnership allowed Swax Lax to reach its full potential.
Swax Lax Today
Today, Swax Lax Camp hosts over 100 South Bronx Prep students each summer! The camp runs for 6 weeks with participants attending one or multiple sessions.
Swax Lax has expanded to other NYC communities, but SBP remains its core partner. Camp alumni often return as volunteer counselors, continuing the legacy.
Though the camp has grown tremendously, the mission remains the same – providing life-changing summer experiences through the sport of lacrosse. Swax Lax proves that big things can grow from humble beginnings when driven by passion and community.
Looking Ahead
The Swax Lax Camp community is so proud of how far this program has come. But they know there are still many youth who could benefit from the camp experience.
The goal is to continue expanding to serve more students while keeping the core values and community spirit strong. Fundraising, volunteers, sponsors, and partners like South Bronx Prep make this continued growth possible.
If you’re as inspired as I am by the Swax Lax story, be sure to get involved! This camp clearly has the power to change lives one lacrosse stick at a time.

Lacrosse Skills Learned at Camp
For many young lacrosse players, attending summer camp can be a transformative experience. This is especially true for students at South Bronx Prep in New York City, many of whom have discovered a passion for lacrosse at Swax Lax Camp. Swax Lax Camp, located in picturesque Hudson Valley, offers top-notch instruction, high level competition, and lifelong memories for campers each summer.
So what makes the Swax Lax Camp experience so impactful for these inner city youths? There are several key reasons.
Developing Fundamental Skills
Attending lacrosse camp allows South Bronx Prep students to focus intensively on building their fundamental lacrosse skills. During the school year, they practice and play games as part of their school team. But at summer camp, lacrosse is the primary activity all day long. Campers participate in dozens of drills, contests, and scrimmages designed to sharpen their passing, catching, shooting, dodging, and stick protection abilities. With guidance from accomplished coaches, they gain muscle memory and mechanics that take their game to the next level.
Receiving High-Level Coaching
The coaching staff at Swax Lax Camp is comprised of top high school and college coaches from competitive programs around the country. Their experience and knowledge is invaluable for young players looking to improve. Through observation, feedback, and individual attention, these coaches are able to identify areas for growth and provide tailored instruction to help each camper maximize their potential. South Bronx Prep students may not have access to this caliber of coaching during the school year, so the opportunity to learn from the best over the summer is invaluable.
Being Immersed in Lacrosse Culture
For students coming from a non-traditional lacrosse background, the immersive lacrosse culture at summer camp can be eye-opening. At Swax Lax Camp, lacrosse is front and center 24/7. Campers eat, sleep, and breathe the sport alongside new friends who share their passion. The nonstop lacrosse talk, pickup games, highlight reels, and college recruiting discussions reinforce that lacrosse is more than just a casual school sport, but rather a competitive, skillful athletic pursuit. This cultural immersion often sparks a hunger in players to raise their lacrosse game.
Gaining Exposure to College Lacrosse
Attending an elite camp like Swax Lax also gives under-recruited players a taste of college lacrosse. The campus dorm facilities, high level of play, and interaction with college coaches provides a glimpse into the next level. Seeing former campers go on to play NCAA lacrosse, including at Ivy League and Division 1 programs, opens players’ eyes to possibilities they may not have previously considered achievable. This exposure and access motivates them to set lofty goals and pursue excellence.
Trying a New Experience
For some South Bronx Prep students, Swax Lax Camp represents their first time leaving the city for an extended period of time. Spending two weeks on a college campus, surrounded by nature, is an eye-opening experience. The physical and mental benefits of being active in the fresh air, trying new activities like kayaking or climbing, forging friendships across geographic divides, and gaining independence from parents are invaluable. Students return home with more maturity, confidence, and well-roundedness.
Making Lasting Memories and Connections
In addition to honing their skills and gaining exposure, perhaps the most significant aspect of Swax Lax Camp for South Bronx Prep students is the lifelong memories and connections they make. Competing together, pushing each other, sharing inside jokes, and bonding like only teammates can leads to relationships that extend beyond camp. Facebook groups, alumni games, and annual reunions keep the community alive. These bonds formed over lacrosse help motivate and inspire players to continue striving on and off the field.
For young student-athletes passionate about lacrosse, an immersive summer camp experience can be truly lifechanging. The combination of high level coaching, competitive play, and camaraderie with fellow lacrosse-obsessed campers accelerates skill development and ignites motivation. Swax Lax Camp provides all of this and more for South Bronx Prep students, helping talented yet under-resourced youth unlock their potential on the lacrosse field and beyond.
Leadership and Teamwork Lessons from Swax Lax Camp
Every summer, students from South Bronx Prep charter schools embark on an unforgettable experience at Swax Lax Camp. This intensive one-week lacrosse camp in upstate New York pushes students outside their comfort zones and teaches invaluable lessons about leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.
Lacrosse itself is a team sport that requires coordination, communication, and strategic thinking. But beyond the skills on the field, Swax Lax Camp focuses on developing the whole person. Students learn just as much about themselves as they do about scooping ground balls or perfecting their passing technique.
Pushing Past Perceived Limits
Many students arrive at Swax Lax Camp believing they can’t complete the demanding fitness circuits, indoor rock climbing courses, and mile-long open water swims. The physical and mental challenges seem daunting at first. However, with encouragement from coaches and teammates, they discover inner reserves of strength and stamina they didn’t know they possessed.
This experience translates powerfully to the classroom and other areas of life. Students realize they are capable of more than they imagined if they are willing to push themselves. Developing a growth mindset and tenacity helps them overcome obstacles at school, pursue ambitious goals, and tackle problems head-on rather than giving up when the going gets tough.
Communication and Teamwork
Although Swax Lax Camp participants attend different South Bronx Prep schools, they bond quickly through the challenges they face together. On the lacrosse field, they can’t succeed without communication, coordination, and trust in each other. Players learn how small mistakes can negatively impact the team as a whole, while working together boosts everyone’s performance and enjoyment.
Students carry these teamwork lessons back to their classrooms and families. They understand how their individual choices and actions have ripple effects on those around them. They learn to share credit when things go well and avoid blaming others when mistakes happen. Most importantly, they appreciate that coordinated effort allows a team to thrive in ways that no individual could manage alone.
Growth Through Discomfort
Stepping outside comfort zones is a key theme at Swax Lax Camp. Students sleep in basic cabins without electricity, go days without showering, and tackle obstacle courses meant to push them mentally and physically. Although initially uncomfortable, these experiences teach campers resilience and the ability to adapt to adversity.
Students learn to embrace discomfort instead of avoiding challenge and change. Getting through tough situations builds confidence and an understanding that growth happens outside, not inside, the comfort zone. Students discover that working through difficulty alongside teammates creates bonds far stronger than staying in easy, familiar patterns.
Self-Discipline and Personal Responsibility
From 6:00 AM wakeup calls to lights out at 10:00 PM sharp, Swax Lax Camp operates on a strict schedule. Students are accountable for being on time and prepared. They are responsible for keeping themselves and their bunk areas clean and tidy throughout the week.
Exercising self-discipline and personal responsibility at camp reinforces the behaviors necessary for success at school. Students return to class more organized and with an enhanced ability to manage their time. They understand the importance of being present and fully engaged rather than standards slipping.
Vulnerability as a Source of Strength
At Swax Lax Camp, students open up and share personal stories during late-night bunk chats. They discuss family situations, anxieties about school, and dreams for the future. Bonding through mutual vulnerability creates a spirit of compassion and helps campers realize they are not alone in facing challenges.
Letting down walls and being real with teammates forges strong connections. Students learn that vulnerability is not weakness but in fact a source of strength. Authenticity and putting oneself out there takes courage but results in deeper relationships and increased self-confidence.
Swax Lax Camp provides transformational learning experiences through the vehicle of a classic summer camp. Lacrosse games and personal challenges build teamwork, leadership, and life skills. South Bronx Prep students return home with memories to last a lifetime and valuable lessons that will guide them in school and beyond.

Cardiovascular and Muscular Endurance
Students run miles each day at Swax Lax Camp, both on rugged wilderness trails and at high intensity on the lacrosse field. Swimming strengthening laps across an open lake taxes the cardiovascular system. Climbing rock walls, maneuvering through mud pits, and traversing ropes courses builds muscular endurance throughout the body.
By the end of camp, students feel exhausted yet accomplished from the physical exertion. Their cardiovascular fitness reaches new levels, preparing their bodies for sports seasons when school resumes. The stimulus of high activity inspires students to continue training hard after leaving camp.
Strength Training
Campers grow significantly stronger over just one week at Swax Lax Camp. Pulling their own body weight up ropes and climbing rock walls constantly challenges strength. Endurance circuits with jumping, crawling, lifting, and climbing build full body power.
Students learn proper strength training techniques from coaches that maximize results while preventing injury. This knowledge allows them to continue gains in strength through bodyweight exercises and safe weightlifting routines back home.
Flexibility and Mobility Gains
Swax Lax Camp keeps students moving through a wide range of motions hour after hour. Yoga sessions focus on deep stretching to improve flexibility and posture. Obstacle courses require reaching, crawling, climbing, hanging, and balancing in all planes of movement.
Increased mobility unlocks performance gains across physical activities. Students find their bodies moving with ease in ways they have never experienced. Joint pain and muscular tightness diminish as the week progresses.
Calorie Burn and Weight Management
The near-constant motion at Swax Lax Camp adds up to massive calorie expenditure over the course of each 14-hour day. Intense activity combined with modest camp cuisine makes it easy to sustain an extreme calorie deficit.
Students often return home several pounds lighter after camp. The knowledge that they can manage their weight through activity and diet motivates them to avoid reverting to old patterns. Their camp experience kickstarts lasting lifestyle changes.
Injury Prevention
While camp activities are demanding, coaches ensure students build up progressively to avoid overuse injuries. Proper technique, targeted stretching, and close monitoring safeguard growing bodies. Sports medicine staff treat any minor sprains immediately.
Students learn to listen to pain signals and handle nagging injuries before they become major. They gain confidence that their bodies can handle hard challenges while staying healthy with smart training.
Healthy Habits
The regimented schedule at Swax Lax Camp helps instill healthy habits in students. Waking before sunrise, exercising all day, eating nutritious meals, staying hydrated, then getting eight hours of sleep maximizes energy and wellbeing.

South Bronx Prep Partnership Details
The South Bronx Prep charter school network recently announced an exciting new partnership with Swax Lax Camp, a non-profit organization providing free lacrosse programs for underserved youth. This collaboration aims to bring the benefits of playing lacrosse to South Bronx Prep students, potentially opening up new opportunities and expanding their horizons.
For those unfamiliar, South Bronx Prep operates seven charter schools across the South Bronx, serving over 2,000 students in grades K-12. Their mission focuses on preparing students for college through a rigorous academic program and strong school culture. South Bronx Prep has a proven track record, with 100% of graduates accepted to college for the past 11 years.
Swax Lax Camp was founded in 2014 by lacrosse enthusiasts looking to share their passion for the sport. Lacrosse has historically been associated with elite prep schools and wealthy suburbs. The founders wanted to make lacrosse accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status. The camp offers a weeklong intensive clinic covering skills, drills, scrimmages and fun team building activities. Expert coaches volunteer their time to work with the campers.
Here’s an inside look at how the partnership will work and what it means for South Bronx Prep students:
Free Lacrosse Camp for Middle Schoolers
Swax Lax Camp will host a free weeklong day camp for South Bronx Prep middle school students this summer. Approximately 100 rising 6th-8th graders will participate. For many, this will be their first exposure to the fast-paced, fluid game of lacrosse. Learning a new sport provides a fun challenge outside their comfort zone. The camp will take place right on the South Bronx Prep campus, eliminating transportation barriers. Students will gain technical skills like cradling, scooping, passing and shooting.
Beyond lacrosse skills, the camp emphasizes team collaboration, communication and sportsmanship. Players learn to encourage one another as a cohesive unit. The week culminates in a friendly scrimmage putting new talents into action. South Bronx Prep students will walk away with new friendships and self-confidence.
Equipment Donations
Lacrosse gear can be expensive, especially for low-income families. Swax Lax Camp is generously donating all necessary equipment like helmets, pads, gloves, sticks and balls for the camp. Students can keep using the gear if they pursue lacrosse afterward. The donation eliminates financial barriers to participating. South Bronx Prep coaches will store and maintain the equipment between uses.
Some students may discover a passion for lacrosse and want to continue playing. The equipment donation makes this possible by providing the essentials to practice. Being properly outfitted boosts a sense of belonging for fledgling players.
Introduction to New Possibilities
South Bronx Prep continually seeks to expand students’ horizons beyond the classroom. Playing an unfamiliar sport like lacrosse pushes campers outside their comfort zone. Signing up for the unknown takes bravery. Pushing through growing pains together forges bonds. Lacrosse translates to life skills like communication, hustle, strategy and quick decision making.
The camp shows students from an underserved community what is possible. Historically, lacrosse was reserved for elite prep schools and expensive athletic clubs. Swax Lax Camp’s mission is making the sport accessible to all. South Bronx Prep students can now claim their place within this expanding lacrosse community.
Trying something new opens eyes to future possibilities. A student may discover untapped athletic talents or set their sights on playing lacrosse in college. They return to school with a broader mindset of what they can achieve. Confidence from succeeding at lacrosse boosts performance across all areas of life.
Volunteer Coaching Pipeline
The partnership provides a pipeline for Swax Lax Camp volunteers to continue coaching at South Bronx Prep. The weeklong clinic serves as audition and training grounds. Standout volunteer coaches with rapport with students can be tapped for ongoing JV and Varsity coaching roles. This ensures continuity for fledgling players.
Passionate and knowledgeable coaches make all the difference in youth sports. South Bronx Prep benefits by welcoming Swax Lax Camp volunteers into their program long-term. Once camp concludes, students have familiar faces to continue honing skills under during the school year. Volunteer coaches gain meaningful experience and relationships inspiring the next generation.
This coaching pipeline supports establishing lacrosse as an ongoing program at South Bronx Prep. What began as a novel weeklong camp can now blossom into a competitive team. With capable trained coaches in place, South Bronx Prep is equipped to offer lacrosse opportunities for years to come.
Conclusion
The South Bronx Prep partnership with Swax Lax Camp kicks off an exciting new chapter. South Bronx students will discover the fast-paced sport of lacrosse, while gaining valuable skills and confidence. Generous donations eliminate financial barriers to participating. Volunteers foster a lifelong passion for the sport by continuing to coach teams. This collaboration provides an engaging new extracurricular activity that unlocks hidden talents and broadens horizons.

It’s the immersive activities, supportive mentors, and close bonds formed with fellow campers that create lifechanging moments for these students.
Upon arriving at camp, South Bronx Prep students are grouped into “families” of 8-10 campers who bunk together, eat together, and participate in activities together. Each day at camp follows a packed schedule focused on personal growth. In the evenings, there are campfires, talent shows, and deep discussions where students open up about their lives back home.
