What is Thunder & Lightning. How do players battle as Loki and Thor. What are the key gameplay mechanics and strategic elements. How does the card-based combat system work. Who created this Norse mythology-inspired game.
Overview of Thunder & Lightning
Thunder & Lightning is an epic two-player card game that brings Norse mythology to life. Designed by renowned game creator Richard Borg and published by Z-MAN Games, this strategic battle pits the gods Loki and Thor against each other in a fight for power and magical artifacts.
Players take on the roles of these rival brothers, building armies and unleashing mythical creatures as they vie for control of Odin’s crown and the powerful ring Draupnir. With its blend of Norse lore, tactical gameplay, and card-driven combat, Thunder & Lightning offers a thrilling head-to-head experience for strategy game fans.
The Epic Confrontation Between Loki and Thor
At the heart of Thunder & Lightning is the age-old conflict between Loki the Trickster and Thor the Thunder God. The game’s backstory sets the stage for their climactic clash:
- Loki has stolen Odin’s crown, a symbol of rulership over Asgard
- Odin tasks his son Thor with recovering the crown
- The Allfather gives Thor his magical ring Draupnir to aid in the quest
- Loki and Thor must now rally their forces for an epic battle
This mythological premise provides rich thematic flavor while driving the game’s core conflict. As players embody these powerful gods, they’ll summon creatures, wield artifacts, and employ cunning strategies in their bid for victory.
Gameplay Mechanics and Card-Based Combat
Thunder & Lightning utilizes an innovative card-driven system to simulate the clash of divine armies. Here’s an overview of the core gameplay mechanics:
Battlefield Layout
The game board consists of four rows on each player’s side. Players deploy their cards face-down in these rows, building up their forces while keeping their exact composition hidden from their opponent.
Card Types
The deck includes various types of cards representing different elements of Norse mythology:
- Creatures and beings (e.g. Fire Giants, Valkyries)
- Artifacts and weapons (like Thor’s hammer Mjölnir)
- Special abilities and effects
Combat Resolution
When players initiate attacks, cards are revealed and their strengths compared. The higher value typically wins, though special abilities can influence the outcome. This creates tense moments of revelation and tactical decision-making.
Strategic Elements and Decision-Making
Success in Thunder & Lightning requires careful planning and adaptability. Some key strategic considerations include:
- Balancing offense and defense across your four rows
- Deciding when to reveal powerful cards versus keeping them hidden
- Anticipating your opponent’s moves and potential hidden threats
- Managing your hand of cards and timing your plays effectively
- Leveraging special abilities and combinations for maximum impact
The game’s design creates numerous opportunities for bluffing, misdirection, and calculated risk-taking. Players must constantly weigh their options and adjust their strategies as the battle unfolds.
Immersive Norse Mythology Theme
Thunder & Lightning doesn’t just use Norse mythology as window dressing – it deeply integrates these legendary elements into the gameplay experience. Some ways the theme comes to life:
Iconic Characters and Creatures
Players can summon a wide array of beings from Norse lore, including:
- Valkyries
- Fire Giants
- Frost Giants
- Dragons
- Dwarves
- And more
Legendary Artifacts
Powerful items from myth play a crucial role, such as:
- Mjölnir – Thor’s mighty hammer
- Draupnir – Odin’s magical ring
- Gungnir – Odin’s spear
Godly Abilities
Loki and Thor’s unique powers are represented through special card effects and abilities, allowing players to feel like they’re wielding divine might.
This rich thematic integration helps immerse players in the world of Norse mythology, making each game feel like an epic clash of legendary proportions.
Designed by Richard Borg: A Pedigree of Excellence
Thunder & Lightning benefits from the design expertise of Richard Borg, a highly respected figure in the board gaming world. Borg’s involvement lends significant credibility to the game. But who is Richard Borg, and what makes his design philosophy special?
Richard Borg’s Gaming Legacy
Borg has created numerous acclaimed games over his long career, including:
- The Commands & Colors series (Ancients, Napoleonics, etc.)
- Memoir ’44
- BattleLore
- Liar’s Dice
These titles are known for their engaging gameplay, historical themes, and innovative mechanics.
Design Philosophy
Borg’s approach to game design often emphasizes:
- Accessibility combined with strategic depth
- Strong thematic integration
- Elegant core mechanics that can be expanded upon
- Balancing luck and skill
These principles are evident in Thunder & Lightning, which offers a nuanced strategic experience while remaining approachable for a wide range of players.
Components and Production Quality
Z-MAN Games is known for high-quality productions, and Thunder & Lightning is no exception. The game includes:
- Two decks of beautifully illustrated cards (one for each player)
- A game board representing the battlefield
- Tokens for tracking various game effects
- A detailed rulebook
The card artwork brings the Norse mythological theme to life, depicting creatures, gods, and artifacts in a vivid, evocative style. The overall production quality enhances the immersive experience and adds to the game’s table presence.
Player Count and Game Length
Thunder & Lightning is specifically designed as a two-player game, making it ideal for:
- Head-to-head duels between friends
- Couples looking for a strategic game night option
- Tournament play
The focused two-player design allows for intense, balanced confrontations without the need to account for multiple opponents or shifting alliances.
Typical Game Length
A full game of Thunder & Lightning usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes to complete. This timeframe hits a sweet spot for many players:
- Long enough for strategies to develop and epic moments to unfold
- Short enough to play multiple games in a session
- Fits well into busy schedules
The relatively quick playtime combined with the depth of strategy makes Thunder & Lightning highly replayable, encouraging “best of three” matches or extended gaming sessions.
Learning Curve and Accessibility
While Thunder & Lightning offers significant strategic depth, it remains accessible to a wide range of players. Here’s a breakdown of the learning curve:
For New Players
- Basic rules can be learned in 10-15 minutes
- The core mechanics of card placement and combat are intuitive
- First few games may involve referencing card abilities
For Experienced Gamers
- Can quickly grasp the strategic nuances
- May take a few games to develop optimal tactics
- Depth allows for continual improvement and mastery
The game’s design strikes a balance between ease of entry and long-term engagement, making it suitable for both casual players and dedicated strategy enthusiasts.
Replayability and Variability
Thunder & Lightning offers strong replayability thanks to several factors:
Asymmetric Gameplay
Loki and Thor have distinct decks with unique cards and abilities. This asymmetry encourages players to try both sides and develop different strategies.
Card Draw Variability
The randomness of card draws ensures that no two games play out exactly the same way. Players must adapt their tactics based on the cards available.
Hidden Information
The face-down deployment of cards creates an ever-changing puzzle. Bluffing and deduction add layers of depth that evolve with repeated plays.
Strategic Depth
The nuanced decision-making space allows players to continually refine their approach and explore new tactics.
These elements combine to create a game that remains fresh and engaging even after numerous plays, rewarding those who dedicate time to mastering its intricacies.
Comparisons to Other Games
To better understand Thunder & Lightning’s place in the gaming landscape, it’s helpful to compare it to some other titles:
Stratego
Both games involve hidden unit deployment and tactical maneuvering. However, Thunder & Lightning adds card-based mechanics and a rich thematic layer.
Magic: The Gathering
While both use cards to represent creatures and effects, Thunder & Lightning has a more focused, board-based structure and lacks deck-building elements.
Commands & Colors Series
Richard Borg’s other designs share some DNA with Thunder & Lightning, particularly in terms of accessibility and elegant core mechanics. However, the theme and specific gameplay elements are quite distinct.
War of the Ring
Both games draw inspiration from beloved mythologies (Norse vs. Tolkien). War of the Ring is a much larger, more complex game, while Thunder & Lightning offers a more streamlined, focused experience.
These comparisons highlight Thunder & Lightning’s unique position as a medium-weight, thematically rich, two-player strategy game that blends familiar elements in novel ways.
Critical Reception and Player Feedback
Thunder & Lightning has generally been well-received by both critics and players. Here’s an overview of common praise and critiques:
Positive Aspects
- Engaging theme that resonates with mythology enthusiasts
- Tense, strategic gameplay with meaningful decisions
- High-quality components and artwork
- Good balance of luck and skill
- Excellent replayability
Potential Drawbacks
- Some players find the learning curve slightly steep initially
- Card text can be small and require frequent referencing at first
- Strictly two-player nature may limit appeal for some groups
Overall, Thunder & Lightning has carved out a respected place among strategy game fans, particularly those who enjoy two-player duels with a rich thematic backdrop.
Expansions and Future Potential
As of 2024, Thunder & Lightning remains a standalone game without official expansions. However, the game’s design leaves room for potential future content:
Possible Expansion Ideas
- New Norse gods with unique decks and abilities
- Additional mythological creatures and artifacts
- Alternate game modes or scenarios
- Campaign-style linked games
Community-Created Content
Some dedicated fans have created unofficial variants and house rules to add further variety to the game. These community efforts showcase the game’s enduring appeal and potential for growth.
While no official expansions have been announced, the rich Norse mythology setting and solid core gameplay provide a strong foundation for possible future developments.
Thunder & Lightning continues to captivate players with its blend of mythological flavor and strategic depth. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Norse legends or simply seeking an engaging two-player duel, this game offers a compelling experience that stands the test of time.
Electric Man
Electric Man is a stickman fighting game where your primary aim is to win the Tournament Of Voltagen. At the beginning of the game you must choose your color and set the difficulty. I recommend you to start playing at easy mode. Your character can perform different slow motion attacks and moves to kill enemies and win the battle. There are several different types of enemies in the game. You will have to fight against strong and powerful enemies. In some battles, you will face several enemies at a time. Hope that you will enjoy the Electric Man flash game at our website.
A Brief History Of Electric Man Game Series
The first version of the game appeared more than 15 years ago, in 2007. It was created by Damien Clarke – an Australian software engineer. The game was created using Adobe Flash and by this time it was something very fresh and interesting because of the pretty nice graphics and great physics. Because of the growing popularity of the game, the developer later released the second and the third chapters of the game which had a better graphics and more difficult levels so people had to spend hours fighting with different types of enemies to complete the game.
By the end of 2020 year, the Adobe Flash was oficially disabled as well as most flash games. Those games which were extremely popular by that time, were moved by their developers to a new platform and continues their life. Others were shut down forever. The fate of the Electric Man game series would be the same but fortunately there is a solution how to run this flash game today. All you have to do is to use the latest emulator of flash games. Our website has a built-in simulator to run the game, you don’t need to install additional software to enjoy this awesome retro game. The only disadvantage is that you can’t enjoy it on your smartphones now, we are searching for the solution to fix this too.
How To Play
You are about to enter the deadly fighting tournament where your mission is to win all battles and reach the final boss to get the trophy of Voltagen. Your mission is pretty difficult – you will have to fight with different types of enemies, sometimes their number can be more than 2 and their power will increase as you progress in the game. Most people say that love this game because of the awesome fighting scenes where it is up to you how to defeat your enemies – try quick attacks or make a combo of slow motion attack for best damage. When the fight begins, you will see the health bar of the characters on the top of the screen. Keep in mind that to win the battle you have to destroy all enemies.
The game seems to be easy but when you start playing it, you realize that it is very difficult to fight against 2 or 3 enemies on the small platform. You have to generate your own strategy how to achieve success – for example you can try to make a combo of quick attacks, then make all enemies stand in line and perform a slow motion attack for best results. There is one thing that you should know about those slow motion attacks – once your power goes to zero, you won’t be able to perform them. Of cource, the power will raise again over time but that’s the clue – use slow motion attacks when you are sure they can bring the biggest damage for your enemies.
The Main Features Of The Game:
Awesome gameplay with an array of different attack strategies.
Really cute stickman graphics as well as physics.
Different difficulty levels to choose.
Game Controls:
[Arrow keys] – move your character
Quick moves: [A], [S], [D]
Slow Motion moves: [Q], [W], [E]

Battle as Loki or Thor as these brothers rekindle their rivalry to contest the throne of Asgard.
An Epic Confrontation
From acclaimed designer Richard Borg, Thunder & Lightning depicts a clash between two gods of Norse mythology. Loki the Trickster has stolen Odin’s Crown. The Allfather bestows his prized ring, Draupnir, upon his son Thor and directs the Thunder God to retrieve his crown. Now Loki and Thor rally armies in preparation for an epic battle for these prized artifacts. Step into the shoes of these mighty gods as you control a deck of cards that represents armies of fearsome creatures or mythological beings. Summon a mighty Fire Giant to fight for your cause or wield the mighty Mjölnir itself. It will take strategy and cunning to defeat your opponent!
Drawing Battle Lines
Each player deploys cards onto the battlefield to swell their armies’ ranks. Launch attacks against your opponent’s cards from your own four facedown rows of creatures. During a challenge, the card with lower strength is discarded. Despite having lost a card, that player gains some information as the surviving card remains face up for the remainder of the battle. Plan your attacks and strike at the perfect moment or turn the tides with a well-played mythological card. Once Loki loses Odin’s crown or Thor loses Draupnir, the player that controls that card is defeated. Only those who are worthy can take up the mantle of the Allfather.

Thunderball InFamous 2 Beta Impressions: Science and Technology Heavy Rains.
In this list, the majority of future owners of the PlayStation 3 will also have inFamous (in the Russian market, it suddenly turned into a “Bad reputation”). In 2007, a small studio, Sucker Punch Productions, with the support of Sony, released a game that unexpectedly became one of the most popular on PS3. Two years later, the continuation of this rather controversial game comes out, and the editors of Lenta.ru managed to play its beta version. So, we hasten to share our impressions about inFamous 2.
As far as it became clear to us, the only stage that made it into the beta version is not the beginning of inFamous 2 itself, as the game’s hero is thrown straight into battle without much explanation, and the storyline has moved a little further than the end of the first part. It all starts with the fact that Cole – the protagonist of inFamous – along with his friend Zeke and agent Moya, on a rather decrepit ship, sail to New Orleans. Here, Cole must find a new source of his power in order to deal with the Beast that destroyed Empire City. According to our companion, it was here, in the city of New Marais, that the Ray Sphere was created, which became the source of all the problems in the first part of the game. And so, they landed us in the swamps, near the camp of local rebels.
inFamous was released by Sony in 2009 for the PlayStation 3. The game takes place in the fictional Empire City, which is run by underground gangs. The main character – Cole – due to an accident that destroyed several quarters, becomes the owner of unusual abilities that allow him to control the energy around. During the game, he had to find out who was behind the accident that plunged the city into chaos, as well as prevent the destruction of Empire City. The game was warmly received by critics and players, which allowed it to sell about two million copies.
The second part of inFamous will be released on June 7, 2011.
In the first five minutes, the player is taught the principles of control and thrown into battle. The first difference from inFamous is that Zeke gives Cole a weapon. That is, now the brave hero will not beat everyone with electric fists, but will swing a club, called by our friend Amp (can be translated as Amplifier). Further, very quickly comes the understanding that the dynamics of the game has changed. Now Cole runs and jumps on pillars/roofs/cars/heads of opponents one and a half times faster than he did in the first part. InFamous was already a nimble Assassin’s Creed on steroids with superpowers, and now the battles and movement occur at lightning speed. Various cinematic effects have also been added. For example, in close combat, when performing a combination of techniques, the camera will move to show the most effective angle, and the time will stretch in slow motion mode. All this makes an already quite beautiful game even more attractive to the player.
So, the first task will be to get directly into the city. There is a rebel camp on Cole’s path, in which, in addition to the militants, there are also civilians. It is worth noting that the karma system has also remained in the game, so if you wave your “amp” indiscriminately and shoot lightning left and right, then there is a chance to hurt the innocent inhabitants of the village. And this will make the hero in the eyes of the oppressed settlers more a symbol of fear than a savior. Therefore, you should be careful when making your way through the ranks of hostile rebels. In the first part of the game, karma influenced not only the perception of the hero by the locals, but also the development of the plot, so this is a rather important point in the game mechanics.
As in the first part, you can climb almost anywhere, as Cole has remarkable acrobatic abilities (worse than the heroes of Assassin’s Creed). And when you climb a tower, the world around you appears in all its glory. The game looks very modern and beautiful. All the details around are worked out, the textures are of acceptable resolution, the effects are beautiful. Fans of playing graphics will obviously not be disappointed. It is immediately clear that the developers have tried, surpassing themselves, since even the first part of inFamous looked pretty good, and the second one looks even better. In addition to graphics, the guys from Sucker Punch also improved the game physics: now you can interact with almost all objects within sight. Most small things can be smashed or thrown, and some structures, such as balconies or huts, fall apart after a few hits. This gives a lot of room for maneuver in battle, when the enemy does not have to be beaten personally, but you can throw ball lightning and blow up the supports of the structure on which he stands.
There are quite a few open spaces in inFamous 2. Moreover, everything has been worked out perfectly, to the point that you can find many unique houses, shops, cafes and other attractions. Cole needs to be periodically recharged from something, and, as in any city, there are many sources of electricity – lanterns, garlands, TVs, cars, machines, and so on. When you press the focus button, all sources of electricity are highlighted for a while and appear on the map, so that the player does not remain helpless and “de-energized”.
The protagonist is terrifying in anger
Lenta.ru
After Cole makes his way through the rebel camp into the city, an unpleasant surprise awaits him – the laboratory in which he was supposed to meet with one of the creators of the Beam Sphere was blown up. Our hero rushes through the whole city, jumping from roof to roof, accelerating on power lines and making his way through the alleys to the remains of the laboratory. There he meets the surviving Dr. Wulf, who gives him his new development – Ray Modifier. She will be able to take away superpowers from Cole’s main enemy – the Beast. To do this, the device requires special power in the form of small energy crystals called Blast Cores. Dr. Wolf has hidden them all over the city and Cole will most likely have to look for them in order to bring the Ray Modifier to full combat readiness.
It is noteworthy that in addition to the rebels, the hero will also meet with the mutants who have flooded the city. In the course of the story, it turns out that the inhabitants of the city manage to somehow get along with them. In one of the tasks of the beta version, Cole will have to save a local girl from being sacrificed to a huge monster. When the rescued lady is handed over to the happy father, it turns out that he knew about such rituals, but hoped to avoid them. As a result, the hero of this same monster will have to defeat, which is quite easy to do with his superpowers. But the very fact of the appearance of these kinds of enemies seems interesting, because in the first part of the game, the variety of opponents was a little disappointing.
Cole uses rails and wires for high-speed movement
Lenta.ru
Speaking of abilities: you can still earn experience points in the game for various tasks and feats, and then spend them on unlocking new tricks. In the beta version, unfortunately, this was not possible, but in the end inFamous 2 it will be possible to “pump” Cole to the fullest. Not only can he throw fireballs of various powers, but he is also capable of levitation, telekinesis, can suck out biological energy from those around him, and also revive half-dead townspeople – and this is not a complete list of our superhero’s capabilities.
After going through a rather short beta version of inFamous 2, the impression that, in fact, the developers wanted, remains – I want to play more. The game really interested me, and not with a plot or idea, but with its insane dynamics and beauty. The first part was compared by many with the action Prototype, but it is rather a pathetic likeness of inFamous. In the second game in the series, the developers at Sucker Punch prove that they have new ideas that they successfully implement. From inFamous 2 you should not expect any unusual plot, crazy intrigues or interesting dialogues. No, this game is about lightning-fast beautiful battles and acrobatic jumps of tens of meters.
“Lightning” tolerable: Nikita Kucherov returned the intrigue to the Stanley Cup final | Articles
“Tampa” Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevsky closed the gap on the “Colorado” Valery Nichushkin in the Stanley Cup final (2:1 in the series). In the third game, the Lightning defeated the opponent on home ice (6:2), adequately responding to the deafening defeat in the previous match (7:0). Kucherov made two passes, he was recognized as the second star of the match. True, in the third period, the striker left the ice due to injury. If the damage turns out to be serious, it will greatly affect the prospects of John Cooper’s wards to take the title. The next match of the series up to four wins will take place on June 23.
Fly in the ointment for Cooper
The seven-goal rout in Game 2 was a real shock to Tampa fans. It seemed that Colorado was a team from another league and would win the series without much tension. Pundits cited Denver’s highlands as the reason for the Lightning’s lackluster away performance. They also complained that John Cooper could not come up with effective defensive schemes against the best attacking team of the season.
The third game was supposed to answer these questions. Another defeat would look like a sentence for the reigning champions: to win back from such a “Colorado” from 0:3 is an impossible task. Therefore, the Tampa players went to the match as if it were their last fight. They rushed forward, but for them the nightmare of this final was repeated again: Nathan McKinnon made a pass to Valery Nichushkin, who sent the puck into the net with a touch. Saved the owners watching the replay: the referees saw that before the pass to McKinnon, the defender missed the puck behind the blue line. True, Colorado soon opened the scoring in accordance with all the rules: Gabriel Landeskog converted the majority. The hosts bounced back five minutes later, after a solo passage by Anthony Cirelli.
Feeling confident in their abilities, the Tampa hockey players pressed the opponent to the goal, while Steven Stamkos and Ondrej Palat wove real lace in attack. One of their combinations ended with a very beautiful goal from the Czech Lightning striker. In the second period, Nikita Kucherov came to the fore. First, he famously freed himself from the tutelage of Eric Johnson and from an uncomfortable hand gave a cool pass to Stamkos. And soon the Russian striker famously assisted Patrick Marun.
While the team was destroying the opponent in a foreign zone, Andrei Vasilevsky played very confidently at the gate. Seven missed goals in the second match did not break the goalkeeper. He didn’t make a single mistake. The game calmly went to Tampa’s victory, but no one gives up just like that in the playoff final. In the second game against the Avalanche leaders, tough power moves were made by the Tampa players. This time, their opponents did the same. Devon Toews played rough against Kucherov and received a two-minute penalty. Many experts noted that the judges felt sorry for the Canadian defender. The Russian went on the ice in the majority, but it was clear that after the throw he felt pain and, having played the shift, went to the locker room. It remains to be hoped that it was reinsurance and the striker has no serious injuries.
– Knowing the character of Nikita, there is a strong feeling that the striker will quickly recover and return in the next game, – three-time Stanley Cup winner, two-time Olympic champion Vyacheslav Fetisov told Izvestia. “He understands that it will be very difficult for Tampa to turn the tide of the series without him. Kucherov is a leader by nature, therefore, despite the pain, he will do everything possible to help his partners.
Vyacheslav Fetisov also shared his expectations from the fourth game of the final.
– The next game will be very interesting, I think – much more even than the previous two, – the expert emphasized. – Both teams are doing well with psychology. The players of “Tampa” and “Colorado” are confident in their abilities, they act at the limit of their capabilities. This is the real finale.
Application for a contract
If in the Tampa offense the bet is placed on Kucherov, Stamkos and Palat, then in the Colorado squad one of the best in this playoff is Valery Nichushkin. In the first two matches of the final, the 27-year-old Russian scored two points each. In total, the forward has 13 (8 + 5) points in 17 matches of the current playoffs.
Valery had a hard way to the top. Usually, the main talents of a generation (and not only Russians) start strong and receive big advances already at the age of 17-18. But in the next three or four years, a lot of people, instead of progress, fall down and no longer rise, at least to the level of players of the first links of the NHL. Nikita Filatov, Nail Yakupov, Mikhail Grigorenko are the brightest examples.
Almost immediately after the stunning performance in the Gagarin Cup-2013, Nichushkin’s career went awry, and he was not the only one to blame. Instead of spending the first full season with Traktor, he agreed to buy out his contract with Dynamo Moscow. But he did not play a single match as part of the Moscow club and immediately after the NHL draft he left for Dallas. He held a full-fledged championship at the Stars and went to the Olympics, but at that time he was not ready for either one or the other.
Further injury knocked out Nichushkin for the season, weak season in Dallas, return to the KHL, unmotivated refusal of the IOC to issue him an invitation to participate in the Pyeongchang Olympics Games 2014 in Sochi), a return to the NHL and a terrible streak when he could not hit the opponents’ goal for 91 games. It is unlikely that at least one person could then predict a different career development, except for a second return to Russia with vague prospects and to the KHL. But Valery withstood all these tests and this month he can win the Stanley Cup.
– We see that Nichushkin caught the courage this season, – Vladimir Plushev, the former coach of the Russian national team, told Izvestia. – He looks very convincing, does not hesitate to take the initiative. I would like to wish him victory in the Stanley Cup.
Nichushkin’s contract with Colorado expires this summer. And, it seems, with his game this season, he ensured its extension on very favorable terms.
The final series of the Stanley Cup will continue with the fourth match, which will be held on June 23 at the Tampa site. “Both teams have nowhere to retreat. Each will get their way. These games are expensive, and it is very difficult to say what the result will be. The chances are still 50/50,” Vladimir Plushev stated.
