Julie Young – Head Coach – Staff Directory
Julie Young enters her ninth season at the helm of Villanova women’s lacrosse in 2020. Young started her career as head coach of the Wildcats in 2012.
In her eighth season as head coach she helped lead the Wildcats to their first 10-win season in Villanova Women’s Lacrosse program history. She concluded the year 10-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Young also captured her second berth to the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals as well as the program’s second appearance. Statistically, she had many members of the team rank nationally, in the BIG EAST and in Villanova women’s lacrosse program history. Devin Hassinger sits first in all-time career draw controls with 237 and Katie Comerford is second in all-time career points with 171. Alexa Moro, Sydney Frank, Liz Trojan and Ashley Lynch also find themselves among the all-time career and single season leaders.
At the end of the 2018 season, Young and her team had recorded an overall record of 9–7 and finished fifth in the BIG EAST with a conference record of 4-5. Her sophomore attacker, Katie Comerford earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team while senior Devin Hassinger set a single season record for draw controls with 83. Hassinger broke the previous record of 76, set by Jackie Froccaro in 2015.
In 2017, Young had coached her first BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in Comerford. The attacker became the first ever Villanova player to win BIG EAST Freshman of the Year after finishing the season as the top-scoring freshman in the conference with 40 goals, 16 assists and 56 points. She led the Wildcats in all three categories. Her 2.78 goals per game was third best in the conference, while her 3.89 points per game average ranked fifth.
The 2016 campaign saw grad student Jackie Froccaro conclude her illustrious Wildcat career as the second all-time leading scorer in program history, finishing her career with 130 goals and 24 assists for a total of 154 points. The grad student also finished her career ranked second all-time in draw controls with 138, tallying a season high 76 during her junior year.
The Wildcats defeated their first ranked team in program history in the 2016 season, taking down #19 Delaware 11-9 at Villanova Stadium. The Blue Hens were previously undefeated on the road.
The 2015 season saw many firsts for the program; the team qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament, senior Froccaro was named BIG EAST Attacker of the Year, and four players were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
It was a strong 12-10 victory over fellow BIG EAST team Vanderbilt in the regular season that gave the Wildcats their playoff spot. With two late goals, the first with 4:35 and the last with 0:04; both scored by Mucci and assisted by Froccaro that gave the Wildcats the lead and the win. This win guaranteed the Wildcat’s the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
From 2014 to 2015, Villanova posted a winning record. In 2015, the Wildcats finished 9-7 and 4-3 in the BIG EAST. Their nine-win season was the most wins since 2002.
2015 graduate Jessica Mucci, grabbed the all-time career assist record with 102. Mucci also grabbed the single-season assists record with 39 during her sophomore year in 2013.
Young has coached multiple BIG EAST first and second team members as head coach of the Wildcats. She has also mentored teams that have succeeded in the classroom, earning the IWLCA Team Academic Award and many individual IWLCA academic awards.
Prior to arriving to Villanova, Young was an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania starting in 2003, while also playing on the USA Women’s Lacrosse National Team from 2001-2004.
During her six years at Penn, Young assisted head coach Karin Brower and helped the team to five consecutive winning seasons. During the 2007 season the team made it to the semifinals and in 2008 the national championship game in the NCAA Tournament. Young coached seven All-Americans during her time at Penn and helped coach the team to back-to-back undefeated seasons in the Ivy League.
In 2008, Young took her first head coaching position at Haverford College, after her first season she was named Centennial Conference Coach of the Year (2009). The following two seasons she led the team to the program’s first conference tournament. In 2010, the team set the highest single season win total in program history with 13. During the 2011 season one of Young’s players was named to the IWLCA All-American team for the first time in 11 years.
Personal
Young went to Princeton where she earned a B.A. in psychology while being a two-sport athlete; playing both soccer and lacrosse.
A two-time Tigers soccer captain, three-time MVP, four-time All-Ivy selection and three time Mid-Atlantic Regional All America, Young was named the C. Otto von Kienbusch Award winner during her senior year. This is awarded annually to a Princeton senior woman of high scholastic rank who has demonstrated general proficiency in athletics and the qualities of a true sportswoman.
During her four years on the lacrosse team, the Tigers made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament, in 2000 playing in the national championship game and in 2001 the national semifinals game. She was a three-time IWLCA All America, four-time All-Ivy selection winner, and named Ivy League Rookie of the Year. During her senior year, she was named a top five finalist for the Tewaaraton Award, which is annually awarded to the most outstanding American college lacrosse player.
Young is also the founder of Philly Blast Lacrosse Club.
Julie and her husband Mike have four children, Kelsey, Sydney, Graham and Payton. The Young’s reside in Berwyn, Pa.

Big East Conference
Conference “ Big East” (stylized as “ BIG EAST” ) is an undergraduate sports conference that competes in NCAA Division I in ten men’s and twelve women’s sports.Eleven full-fledged schools headquartered in New York City are located primarily in the metropolitan areas of the Northeast and Midwest. The conference was officially recognized as a Division I multisport conference on August 1, 2013 [1], and after reconfiguration, conference attendees won the NCAA National Championships in Men’s Basketball, Women’s Cross Country, Field Hockey, Men’s Lacrosse and Men’s Football. Val Ackerman is the Commissioner. [2]
The conference was formed after the Catholic Seven members of the original Greater East conference decided to secede from football schools to start a new conference on basketball. These schools, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova, announced their decision in December 2012. [3] In March 2013, the new conference was called the Big East Conference, basketball logos and records. and the rights to the men’s basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden from the football members of the old Big East who formed the American Athletic Conference (AAC), which is the successor to the old conference. [4] Both conferences were founded in 1979, when the original conference was founded by Dave Gawitt, and the story is the same until 2013. [5] [6]
Three more schools, Butler, Creighton and Xavier University, joined the conference on July 1, 2013. [7] In June 2019, the Big East invited the University of Connecticut (UConn) to “rejoin” the conference from AAC, which they did on July 1, 2020. [8] [9] Football is not sponsored by sport and the University of California is the only member of the FBS Division I top-tier varsity football team.Georgetown, Villanova and Butler do run football programs in FCS Division I Tier 2, although only Villanova offers scholarships to its players. The conference is also attended by four associate members in field hockey and one in men’s and women’s lacrosse.
History
Original Big East
The original Big East Conference was founded in 1979 when Providence College basketball coach Dave Gawitt spearheaded an effort to organize an East Coast student sports conference focused on basketball. [10] The core of the Greater East was formed when Providence, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse invited Seton Hall, Connecticut, California, Holy Cross, Rutgers, and Boston College, British Columbia. Holy Cross declined the invitation, as did Rutgers at the beginning, while BC, Seton Hall and UConn accepted the invitation. [11] [12] [13] Gavitt became the first Commissioner of the Greater East, and Villanova and Pittsburgh joined the conference shortly thereafter. [14] [15] [16] PR firm Duffy & Shanley is credited with initial branding and title work for the conference. [17] The “high point” of the original conference is widely considered to be the 1985 NCAA, in which Georgetown, St. John’s and Villanova all advanced to the Final Four and Villanova defeated Georgetown to win the national championship.
The conference remained largely unchanged until 1991, when it began sponsoring football, adding Miami as a full member, and Rutgers, Temple, Virginia Institute of Technology, and West Virginia as football-only members. [18] Rutgers and West Virginia became full members of Big East in 1995, and Virginia Institute of Technology did the same in 2000. Notre Dame has also joined as a non-football member since 1995. Temple Football was dropped after the 2004 season due to what was considered by other footballers to be a failure to put in a serious effort to build a competitive squad, but reunited in 2012 after a major overhaul of its football program and intended to become a full member of the Big East in 2013. …
The unusual structure of the Greater East with “football” and “non-football” schools led to instability at the conference. [19] The Greater East was one of the most heavily impacted conferences during the conference overhaul in 2005 and early 2010s. Overall, 14 member schools announced their departure for other conferences, and 15 other schools announced plans to join the conference (eight as participants for all sports and four for football only).Three of the latter group later abandoned their plans to join (one for all sports and the other two for football only). These waves of apostasy and replacement exposed tensions between football-sponsoring schools and non-football schools, which ultimately led to a conference split in 2013 at [20].
Separation and Reconstruction
Location of member institutions of the current Big East Conference
December 15, 2012 seven non-FBS Greater East schools – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova – announced that they had voted unanimously to secede from the Greater East football schools. [21] The split schools were dubbed the “Catholic Seven” because of their shared religious affiliation and were motivated in part by a desire to return to Gawitt’s original vision of a strong, northeast-facing, basketball-focused conference. [6] and the prospect of a better TV deal than they could get by staying with football schools. [22] The move occurred during a limited period during which these non-FBS schools had a majority vote at the conference — after some FBS schools moved to ACC, but before the actual inclusion of FBS candidate schools to replace them. [23]
Negotiations with other member schools continued in early 2013, and in March it was announced that the Catholic 7 schools would leave the conference on June 30, 2013, but retain the Big East Conference name, logos, 10 million dollars. from the treasury of the old conference and the right to host the conference basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden. [24] On March 15, ESPN announced that the Big East will add Butler and Xavier from the Atlantic 10 Conference, as well as Creighton from the Missouri Valley conference, [25] , which was officially announced at a press conference in New York on March 20, 2013. [7] [26] Additional announcements confirmed their New York headquarters, [27] and a $ 500 million 12-year TV deal with Fox Sports and its networks, as well as a six-year TV deal with CBS. and its CBS sports network. [28] [29] [30] On June 26, 2013, the new conference hired Val Ackerman, the former president of the WNBA, as conference commissioner. [2]
Field Hockey and Lacrosse Associates
The rest of the old conference later announced that they would continue as the American Athletic Conference (AAC).However, several AAC and former Greater East schools continued to play lacrosse and field hockey with the new Greater East Conference in 2013, including Rutgers and Louisville, before moving their programs to the G10 and Atlantic Coast conferences, respectively, in 2014-2015. [31] AAC members California and Temple also joined the new Big East for women’s lacrosse and field hockey, while Cincinnati joined the women’s lacrosse league, Denver joined the men’s lacrosse league [32], and the Old Dominion joined the field hockey league. [33]
Launch of the Women’s Lacrosse League in the Big Ten in the 2015 season resulted in the dissolution of the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) after the 2014 season; two Southeast Conference teams that were members of the ALC, Florida and Vanderbilt, joined the Greater East as associate members in the sport. [34] The following changes in the associate membership of the Greater East took place in the 2015-16 academic year. First, on December 8, 2015, the conference announced that Liberty and Quinnipiac would become associate members in field hockey from the 2016 season. [35] Then, on May 3, 2016, the Big East announced that Denver, already a men’s lacrosse partner, would move its women’s lacrosse team to the league for the 2016-17 school year (2017 season). [36] In addition to the new associate members, Full Member Butler announced on October 21, 2015 that he will raise his women’s lacrosse club team to full university status for the 2017 season and will immediately begin Big East competition. [37]
The American Athletic Conference began sponsoring women’s lacrosse in the 2019 season (2018-19 school year), which resulted in the departure of all then-women’s lacrosse partners in the Greater East except Denver. [38] On the same day, the Big East announced that field hockey participant Old Dominion will also become a participant in the 2019 Big East women’s lacrosse season, retaining the 6-team Big East women’s lacrosse membership and retaining its automatic seat for the women’s teams NCAA. tournament. [39]
Return of UConn
In June 2019, various news outlets reported that UConn would soon leave AAC and travel to the Big East awaiting a decision on the future of the school football program. Many news reports describe the University of California as “reuniting” with the Big East [40] [41], because the University of California was one of the founders of the original Big East [42], but stayed with football attendees when the conference was reorganized into AAC in 2013. [43] By 2018, however, UConn experienced a sharp decline in sports department revenues. [44] Since 2016, several sources have reported mutual interest between the University of California, Connecticut and the new Greater East. [45] [46] [47]
On June 24, 2019, the Greater East formally approved UConn’s invitation to join the conference. [48] The California State University Board of Trustees accepted the invitation two days later, thus reuniting the University of Connecticut with several schools it had competed with for 34 years in the old Big East. [49] UConn and AAC reached a buyout agreement next month, enabling UConn to become a member of the Greater East on July 1, 2020.During the announcement of the buyout agreement, UConn announced that its soccer team would become an independent FBS upon arrival in the Big East. [50] The UConn men’s and women’s ice hockey teams remain members of the East Hockey Association. [51] In 2020, Old Dominion women’s lacrosse left the Big East and moved to AAC, essentially swapping places with UConn, so both conferences retained the six members required for automatic betting. [52]

Full Members
Nine of the eleven members of the Greater East are private and Catholic institutions. The exceptions are Butler, who does not adhere to any religion (although it was founded by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)) and the University of California, which is the only government agency in the Greater East.
