Game Day Gear: MCLA DII — University of Dayton
This past May we caught up with all 32 teams at the 2011 MCLA Tournament held in Denver, CO at Dicks Sporting Goods Park to put all of their gear on display for the world to see.
If you were fortunate enough to make it to Denver you likely didn’t get a close look at every team as games began early in the day and ran throughout the evenings, but the Gear Zone has you covered.
After taking a little break we continue our MCLA game day gear with Division II’s No. 6 seeded team, the Dayton University Flyers who finished 12-5 on the year defeating Northern Colorado and St. Johns respectively in the first two rounds and eventually was knocked out by St. Thomas in the semi finals of the tournament by a score of 12-11. The Dayton, OH based team came out to Denver repping custom team gear by Cascade, Warrior, Brine and Nike.

Defiance College, located on a 150-acre campus in the residential area of Defiance, Ohio, is a small college affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
Originally founded in 1850 as a women’s seminary, Defiance has since grown into a four-year college with graduate programs in business and education. Franklin Field is an American sports stadium located in Philadelphia on the eastern edge of the University of Pennsylvania campus. It is home to the Penn Relays, as well as the University of Pennsylvania stadium for football, athletics, lacrosse and previously football, field hockey and baseball.It is also used by Penn students for recreational purposes, as well as intra-university and club sports including touchscreen football and cricket, and is the site of Penn’s graduation exercises, weather permitting.
According to the NCAA, Franklin Field is the oldest stadium still operated for football. It was the first stadium in the United States with scoreboards or upper deck seats. In 1922, it hosted the first radio broadcast of a 1922 soccer match on WIP, as well as the first televised broadcast of a Philco soccer match.
From 1958 to 1970, the stadium was the home field of the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League.
History
Workers lay bricks on the south wall of Franklin Field, circa 1922. Franklin Field was built and dedicated on April 20, 1895 for the first run of the Penn Relay.
The Field supplemented and eventually replaced a site called University Sites, which was located a few blocks to the west on a block bounded by Spruce Street (north), 38th Street (east), Pine Street (south), Woodland Avenue and 37th Street T-jumper (northwest).Its location is usually designated as “37th and Spruce”.
Permanent construction of the Franklin Field did not begin until the turn of the century. The Scales Hall Gymnasium, stadium and permanent stands were designed by the architect Frank Miles Day Brother and were built from 1903 to 1905. The course was long and wide. A ¼-mile track, soccer field and baseball diamond were built on the site. Under the stands there were covered paths and covered training grounds.
In 1916, the university’s leadership, led by George Neitzch, planned with the city to build a new, semi-submerged 100,000-spectator stadium for $ 750,000 at Woodland Raven, a depression on the southeast side of Woodland Cemetery.Plans included the construction of a new rail station called Union Station, which will have a stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad and a proposed (and never built) elevated subway line connected to the Market-Frankford Line. Architectural firm Koronski Cameron did the rendering, but plans quickly collapsed. Five years later, it was decided to expand the Franklin field instead.
1922 reconstruction
The current stadium was built in the 1920s by Day Klauder after the original wooden stands were demolished.The lower tier was erected in 1922. The old wooden stands were demolished immediately after the Penn Relays, and a new concrete lower tier and seating for 50,000 seats were built. The second tier was added in 1925 by Day Klauder’s design when it became the second (and largest) two-tiered stadium in the United States.
WIP. This claim is hampered by an earlier live radio broadcast from Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on October 8, 1921, a full year before Franklin Field claimed fame.Harold Arlene announced the live broadcast of the Pitt-West Virginia soccer match on October 8, 1921, on KDKA radio. The first commercial television broadcast of football in 1939 also came from Franklin Field.
Hello: 1930s and 1940s
The 1936 Democratic National Convention was concluded at Franklin Field, where President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered the Convention’s acceptance speech after being re-elected to a second term.
In the 1930s and 1940s, Penn led the nation.Each fall, the 65,000-seat stadium has been expanded with temporary stands with 78,000 seats.
For example, the annual Cornell-Penn Thanksgiving Day, broadcast on national radio, attracted 70,000 spectators to the stadium in 1931. The game earned a storyline on the front page of The Philadelphia Investigator along with a quarterly breakdown of every detail of the game.
The 1947 game attracted a crowd, estimated in current reporting at “around 80,000”.
By the beginning of the 21st century, Franklin Field, named after Penn’s founder, Benjamin Franklin, had ranked 52,958.
In 1969, Franklin Field switched from natural grass to AstroTurf and became the first artificial turf stadium in the NFL. (Houston AFL oilmen moved to Astrodome (with AstroTurf) in the previous season). The stadium’s fifth AstroTurf surface was installed in 1993 and the current Sprinturf field replaced it in 2004. The tenants since 1958 moved to the Veterans Stadium in 1971, also with artificial turf.
Franklin Field was considered a candidate to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup games.FIFA demanded that the home stadiums have natural grass. If Philadelphia were chosen and the Franklin field was used, the stadium would have to go back to turf, or perhaps use a temporary turf, as was done at two World Cup sites – Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. and the Pontiac Silver Dome in Pontiac, Michigan.
2014-2020 repair
In 2015, large-scale renovation work began in the amount of $ 44 million.in order to strengthen concrete at the Franklin deposit. The project was carried out in four phases, which allowed the continued use of the stadium during renovations. The first phase began in 2015 and was completed in 2017, and the northern stands were reinforced. The final stage envisages the closure of all the southern and eastern stands, leaving only the northern stands at the disposal of the fans; this phase is expected to last until 2020.

Penn Relays
Franklin Field has hosted the annual Penn Relays, the largest athletics competition in the United States, spanning over 100 years.
The first Penn Relays took place in 1895. Frank B. Ellis, chairman of Penn’s Athletics Committee, was looking for an event to mark the opening of the then new school’s Franklin Field. Two years earlier, during their senior year in Penn, Penn and Princeton competed in a one-mile relay, in which four runners from each school ran a quarter-mile.
This race was an outgrowth of the internal relay races that took place in Penny. Ellis and others organized a series of relay races to take place on Saturday, April 20, 1895.It was attended by 64 athletes from eight colleges, six preparatory schools and two high schools. Eight two-nomination races were held with Harvard defeating Penn in a 3: 34.4 mile run.
Relay races were shown on April 29, 1961, at the premiere of the film “The Wide World of Sports”.
Other meetings
The Second USSR-USA Athletics Meeting was held at Franklin Field on July 18-19, 1959. The competition was attended by Perry O’Brien, Ray Norton, Al Cantello, Hayes Jones, Tamara Press, Vasily Kuznetsov, Dirol Burleson, Greg Bell, young Wilma Rudolph, and the future great long jumper Igor Ter-Ovanesyan.
Franklin Field hosted the NCAA Men’s Outdoor Athletics Championships in June 1961, the first time a championship was held on the East Coast. Seven records were set and the University of Southern California won the 21st Athletics Team Championship.
Following the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics and the United States Bicentennial, on August 4, 1976, Franklin Field hosted the Bicentennial Athletics Championships. The Montreal meeting was attended by Haisley Crawford, Don Quarry, Michael Shine and Edwin Moses.The meeting was also an opportunity for top runners, including Houston McTeer, who were unable to take part in the race with the winners in Montreal. 13,722 people attended the event and saw the Dwight Stones set the high jump record and John Walker win the mile.
The University of Pennsylvania hosted the 1980 Liberty Bell, a two-day track and field classic, an alternative to the 1980 Summer Olympics for the 26 countries that boycotted the American-led 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.The Liberty Bell track and field classic began on July 16, 1980. It was the largest international track meeting held in the United States since 1932 in terms of the number of foreign participants. Franklin Field hosted the athletics competition, where 20,111 spectators watched the final evening of the competition.
In some competitions the time was better than in Moscow, for example, the time of the American Renaldo Nehemiah in the 110 m hurdles ahead of the East German gold medalist Thomas Munckelt in the 13 race.39.
Track configuration
The Franklin Course track has a rarely used configuration in which a 400-meter circumference is reached in lane 5 rather than lane 1. Thus, there are two curbs on the track, one inside lane, and also inside lane 5. In order to accommodate all the fields of the Penn Relay and other meetings, special devices are made with a movable border in the background in order to stagger the runners, to reach the common breakpoint in lane 5 and not in the normal lane.Arrivals on one circle along the inner lanes, arrivals on additional sections of a straight line. Multiple laps spend most of the race in lane 5 to cover the required distance.
The current track was installed in 2015 and uses the surface of the Recortan track.
Football
Penn Quakers
Penn Football was first played on Franklin Field in 1895.
The University of Pennsylvania was one of the top football schools in the early years of college football.It is believed by many that Penn was the national college football champion in 1894, 1895, 1897, and 1904. Other sources cite Penn as the nation’s soccer champions in 1895, 1897, 1904, and 1908.
John H. Outland played at Franklin Field for Penn in 1897 and 1898. On October 26, 1907, Jim Thorpe and Carlisle Indian School played a match against the powerful University of Pennsylvania team, 26-6, in front of a crowded crowd of 20,000 at Franklin Field.
On October 26, 1918, as the Spanish flu swept through the city, the Penn Football Team played the Marines Football Club on an empty Franklin Field with a stadium closed to fans to prevent the spread of the virus.
The
Red Grange set an NCAA record at Franklin Field when he threw 331 yards for the University of Illinois’ 24-2 victory over Penn on October 31, 1925, in front of 67,877 spectators.
On Saturday, November 16, 2002, ESPN aired a College GameDay game with Franklin Field ahead of the game between Penn and Harvard.
Both teams entered the game undefeated 5-0 at the conference. It was the first College GameDay broadcast from a Division I-AA college. Penn won the match, 44-9, and was undefeated and unleashed by the season.Harvard finished 6-1 in conference, 7-3 overall.
The Penn Quakers Football Team played their 800th match against Dartmouth on 4 October 2008 at the stadium.
Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles played at Franklin Field from 1958 to 1970. They moved to the stadium for the 1958 season, leaving Connie Mac Stadium. Franklin Field held over 60,000 seats for the Eagles, while Connie Mac had 39,000 seats. According to then-Eagles president Frank L.McNamy, the Eagles did not pay rent to use the Franklin Field because Penn was a nonprofit organization. Instead, the Eagles donated between $ 75,000 and $ 100,000 a year for upkeep and other expenses. The university has collected all concessions and parking revenues.
On October 11, 1959, NFL Commissioner Bert Bell died in a nearby university hospital after suffering a heart attack on Franklin Field during the final two minutes of a game between the Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steel Mills.
The 1960 NFL Championship Games were played here on December 26, beating favorite Green Bay Packers 17-13; it was head coach Vince Lombardi’s only defeat in his playoff career. Two years earlier, the two franchises were the worst in the twelve team league, with a title match attendance of 67,325. The game started at noon, in case it went into overtime, as there was no lighting on the court at the time.
Two notorious incidents in the history of the Eagles occurred at the stadium.
Santa Claus booed
A halftime Christmas show was scheduled during the 1968 season finale against the Minnesota Vikings. The struggling Eagles entered the game at 2-11 and fans were less than happy with Eagles quarterback Norm Snead (preseason injury), owner Jerry Woolman and especially coach Joe Kuharich: many fans came to the button-down game “Joe must go ”. Unfortunately, the man who was supposed to play Santa was unable to make it to Franklin’s pitch due to bad weather.
Instead of the original break on the field, a 19-year-old fan named Frank Olivo (who came to the stadium already dressed as Santa Claus) was invited to throw sweet canes with the fans. Frustrated by the team, the ugly wet weather and the flimsy beard, fans booed Olivo and threw snowballs at him. This incident is often cited by sports casters in denigrating Philadelphia sports fans, as it means they were booing Santa Claus. The Eagles lost the game, 24-17.(Olivo continued to attend Eagles games and even returned as Santa Claus four decades later at the Eagles game on December 27, 2009 against the Denver Broncos at Lincoln Financial Field.)
Howard Cosell ill
In the first season of 1970 Monday Night Football, announcer Howard Cosell was apparently drunk while playing the Eagles-New York Giants on November 23rd. After vomiting onto the colored boots of commentator Don Meredith shortly before half-time, Cosell left the stadium and took a taxi back to New York.Meredith and announcer Keith Jackson made little mention of their retirement in the second half. Later, denying drunkenness, Cosell stated that he was dizzy from running in circles on the Franklin Field circuit before playing with circuit star Tommy Smith.

The Army-Navy was played 18 times at Franklin Field between 1899 and 1935, and in 1936 moved to a larger municipal stadium in South Philadelphia.Penn alumnus and Olympic medalist George Orton (who worked with Frank Ellis in running the Penn Relays) deservedly helped bring the game to Philadelphia in 1899.
Temple University played its home soccer games at Temple Stadium until the late 1970s. The Temple Stadium was opened in 1928 and held up to 34,000 football matches. In the opening year of the series, games were played at Arute Field in New Britain, Connecticut. The Bowl Series will move to Delaware Stadium in 2017 but return to Franklin Field in 2018.

NFL Frankford Yellow Jackets held the Dayton Triangles on September 24, 1927 at Franklin Field.The Yellow Jackets usually played their home matches in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. Triangles won, 6-3.
On August 23, 1958, the first Canadian Football League match played on American soil between two Canadian teams took place at Franklin Field, as the Hamilton Tiger-Cotes beat the Ottawa Racers 13-7.

The inaugural Major League Championship match took place on July 13, 2013 at Franklin Field. Boston Whitechaps beat San Francisco Dogfish (20-15). The stadium again hosted the MDR championship on July 16, 2016, as the Philadelphia Spinners beat Portland Stadiums, 14-11.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech at the stadium in which he accepted the Democratic nomination for a second presidential term in 1936.It is estimated that a crowd of 100,000 sat in the intermittent rain in Franklin Field to hear Franklin speak.
Entertainment
In 1975 and 1976, the stadium hosted the annual world championship in drum and horn bodies.
In 1997, Franklin Field hosted the Irish group U2 during the first leg of their Pop Mart Tour on June 8th. It was the first stadium concert since the 1970s.
In the movie
In the film “Shyamalan Night 2000” directed by M.Night Shyamalan Unbreakable, Franklin Field takes center stage in the film. The main character of the film, played by Bruce Willis, plays a security guard at the stadium. In the 2006 film Invincible, Franklin Field served as a tribune for a ruined veteran stadium that was digitally superimposed on some of the action’s soccer plots.
