Twin Valley dominates Quaker Valley in PIAA Class 2A girls lacrosse first-round game
A sudden thunderstorm that caused a short weather delay was the only thing that could stop the Twin Valley girls lacrosse team as it dominated Quaker Valley 17-3 in a PIAA Class 2A first-round game Tuesday at Twin Valley.
Sophomore Kylie Duke scored a game-high five goals and junior Hadley Munn had three goals and a game-high five assists to help propel Raiders in a selfless display of offense.
“I got everybody in; that’s a good day for me,” Twin Valley coach Courtney Kaplan said. “Everyone gets the experience and the touches and in big games like this it helps our program overall, so that was important to me.”
The Berks and District 3 champ Raiders (19-6) advance to face Blackhawk (16-2), the District 7 runner-up that defeated Conneaut 17-3 Tuesday, on Saturday at Penn State’s Panzer Stadium at 10 a.m.
“I feel really proud of this team and how far we’ve gone because I feel like no one thought that we could get this far,” Duke said. “And I feel like we just have so much confidence in ourselves right now that we can make it to the ‘chip.”
Firing on all cylinders from the start, Twin Valley jumped to a 3-0 lead before the District 7 third-place Quakers (15-6) scored their first goal with 18:05 left in the first half. Kaitlyn Davis started the scoring 44 seconds in and was assisted by Anna Givens. Duke followed that goal a little over 30 seconds later with her first of the game and Munn had her first assist on the play.
Samantha Rhoads scored the third goal for the Raiders with 18:48 left and was unassisted.
Quaker Valley’s goal was not enough to start a comeback, however, as Twin Valley went on to score eight unanswered and jump to an 11-1 lead until the threat of a thunderstorm delayed the game for close to an hour with 4:25 remaining in the first half.
During the scoring run, the Raiders handled possession frequently and forced quick turnovers to win the ball back with ease. Givens scored three goals during the run, Duke two, and Munn, Davis and Jessi Robinette each had one.
“I think we were super focused; possession again, is everything,” Kaplan said. “So I was super happy about the draw and how we did there. They have some power shooters and I think we did a really nice job just getting on their hands so they couldn’t get the opportunities to get the looks.
“But I think our midfield did a really nice job controlling the game. I thought we caused turnovers again; like right when they get down to defense and we’re causing the ball to turnover, that makes me super happy. And then we can go down and attack.
“So thought they were patient on the attack, too. I wanted them to push and then when it wasn’t there, that’s when they settle and I think they did a good job to kind of spread the wealth.”
Spreading the wealth may be an understatement for the Raiders, who recorded assists on 11 of their 17 goals.
Givens finished with three goals and three assists, Davis had two goals and one assist, Robinette had two goals and two assists and Rhoads ended with two goals.
On Robinette’s second assist, Twin Valley was on a counterattack breakaway and Robinette had received a pass to the front right of the goal. Rather than take the decent chance herself, Robinette passed to a storming Givens, who was making a run directly on goal and then hammered the ball in the back of the net with 14:03 left in the first half.
“I think its just that we all trust our teammates,” Duke said, “and we know who can get it to who and we all know that. there’s always someone there to pass us the ball. We just have a really good team chemistry that keeps us going.”
The Quakers scored a goal just before halftime and then another with 14:33 left.
Munn had two goals in the second half, and Rhoads, Duke and Robinette each had one. The game was stopped with a little over four minutes to play due to lighting. At that point it was called by the officials.
Heading into the quarterfinal round, Twin Valley knows it needs to keep its confidence and continue to stay on brand in order to carry on in the state playoffs.
“I think we all come out and work as a team and know that we’re gonna win and we have that confidence in ourselves,” Duke said. “And I feel like that’s what makes us win. If we don’t have the confidence, that’s our weakness.”
