How long have you been playing lacrosse?: I have been playing lacrosse for 8 years.

Do you have a favorite moment or memory from a lacrosse game?: I love the competitive aspect of lacrosse as well as the team aspect.

Do you have a favorite moment or memory from a lacrosse game?: My favorite moment in lacrosse is when the final horn of a championship game we just won blows and we all run onto the field and celebrate together.

Is there a coach or athlete that you look up to as a role model and why?: I admire Coach Kathleen Jaeger. She was my coach the first year I played with Triple Threat and I was amazed that she could juggle getting her college degree, playing lacrosse, and being an incredible coach and role model for us all at the same time. She showed me that being a successful student-athlete is possible.

Have you ever suffered a major sports-related injury? If so, how do you feel that improved your game?: In October 2020 I tore my ACL and meniscus and needed reconstructive surgery. Since then, I have gained a strong desire to get back on the field and I realized that I really do love playing lacrosse. Being on the sidelines, I have also been able to attain a next-level understanding of the game and more deeply understand other positions on the field as well. I will be back on the field for fall ball 2021!

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of sports?: Outside of sports, I take part in choir and Model UN at my high school, I am a camp counselor at a museum in the summertime and a volunteer coach for our local youth rec league, and I work at a local ice cream shop.

How does being an athlete inspire you to do good?: Being an athlete inspires me to set a good example for the younger girls who play lacrosse that will grow and hopefully learn to love the game as much as I do.

Lacrosse Camp (Girls) – Eagles/Edge

4-day lacrosse clinic, lead instructor TBA

Open to girls at any school, entering grades 4 to 9.

FACILITIES

The clinic is held on the Brother Linus, C.F.X. Athletic Commons, which is the practice field for the St. John’s Prep varsity team, and also the location for the underclassmen home games. The turf field is equipped with multiple lacrosse goals and game balls.

STAFF

The staff, made up of the most well-respected local high school and college coaches, incorporate drills which they use at their own practices to help prepare players for the next level. 

The staff has many year of experience to provide instruction on fundamental development in the following areas: 

• Defender
• Midfielder
• Attacker
• Goalkeeper

This 4 day camp is designed to develop lacrosse fundamentals in a competitive and fun environment. Players of all ability levels will be challenged in a variety of traditional and progressive drills that aim to develop the individual player’s skills and understanding of the game.

We have continued to develop our program and are ready to hit the pitch again for summer 2021!

Camps are for boys ages 10-18.

Xcelerate Nike Lacrosse Camp Director, Jason Rife, discusses Odd-Man Offense:

In the game of lacrosse, offense is either generated through even or odd-man situations. Odd-man situations can be 2-on-1, 3-on-2, 4-on-3, 5-on-4 or 6-on-5. These situations can take place off a ground ball, off transition from defense to offense, on the back side after an opponent’s slide or a quick re-start.

Stick Work
First important part of taking advantage of odd-man situations is having good stick work. These are rooted in ball movement, so if we cannot pass and catch effectively with both hands, we’re going to miss out on a lot of good opportunities.

Draw & Dump
Odd-man offense is a better opportunity than even because we have an extra guy. The most basic and general rule when it comes to having an extra guy is draw and dump. At some point, the defense has to respect the ball carrier and play him, leaving someone wide open. To draw the defense, the ball carrier must be looking to threaten the cage and not just look like he is passing.

Maximize Spacing
The more spacing the offense has, the more ground the defense has to cover. If we’re tight, one defender can potentially cover two offensive players. Not only do we want to have good spacing, but we also want to make sure we’re in a threatening position to score. A lot of time young players will drift into bad shooting angles. A defense is taught to slow play that player until he becomes a threat.

Catch Into Triple Threat
Getting yourself into space where you can catch stepping into triple threat with your hands free is very important piece. We define triple threat and having your hands and feet loaded with the ability to shoot, pass or dodge from the same position. As a player gets more and more reps in numbers situations, they will be able to read each scenario quicker and make faster triple threat decisions based on the position of the defense.

Here’s what your daughter can expect at one of our fall girls lacrosse clinics. (Also take a look at our girls summer camp agenda!)

A TYPICAL DAY: WHAT TO EXPECT AT FALL CLINICS FOR K–6TH GRADERS

Skills to be focused on:

Cradling

1. Players show coaches where their hands should be on the stick, then correct them and walk them through the motion of ear to ear. The goal of this motion is to focus on the arm and wrist working as one, similar to closing a door.
2. As they practice, #1 coaches will walk around and place a sticker as to where the players’ top hand should be, and emphasize the triple threat position (shoulder, shoulder, stick).
3. Players are instructed by coaches to cradle with someone back to back. If their sticks touch on each side as they bring the ball back without it falling out, they receive a point. Players are encouraged to see how many points they can get before the coach calls time. 

Ground Balls

1. Players are shown the correct way to pick up a ground ball (hand at top of stick, bottom hand as lever, getting low to the ground, foot next to ball, etc.).
2. The coaches place balls out in front of the players and have them scoop up the ball correcting them as they practice more and more. 

Station 1

Frozen ground balls 

• Players get to pick the tunes for this fun ground ball drill that’s similar to musical chairs. When the music stops players must hurry to find and possess a ground ball.

Station 2 

Sleeping Giants 

• No one wants to be the one waking the giant! In this fun lacrosse game, players practice picking up ground balls as they come close to the giant’s sleeping quarters. 

Station 3 

Tunnel Ground Balls

• One of the most important factors of ground balls is getting low. By using their sticks, players create tunnels where they must get through without touching in order to gain possession of a ground ball. 

Station 4

Cradling Relay Races 

• Coaches form the players into two lines and put them through a cradling relay race that can include, but is not limited to: crab walks, hopping on one foot, cradling right/left etc., shooting through a hula hoop, going through ladders, and switching hands at cones.

Station 5 

Squirrels and Nuts (Swax Lax Lacrosse Classic)

• In this fun drill the players will practice ground balls by pretending they are squirrels and the balls are nuts. Players must get the most nuts back to their tree to win.

Players of the Day: Coaches award the coveted Player of the Day stickers to players who demonstrate special effort or who master a specific skill.
